DJ Tom Select ZIPDRIVEDISCO

After about 20 years of work as a DJ for different bands, artists, various music projects and the production of countless songs, mixtapes, beat tapes and other stuff, DJ Tom Select presents his first solo album called ZIPDRIVEDISCO. The grey colored 12” Vinyl features 16 songs with exclusive guest appearances from Inspectah Deck (Wu-Tang Clan), Daz Dillinger (Dogg Pound), Chino XL, C-Rayz Walz, Bronze Nazareth, Nino Graye, Jaecyn Bayne, Doktor Dogma, Kurupt, Snoop Dogg and many more. While the Vinyl LP can be seen as a classic Hip Hop album, the included 29 track CD offers a different experience since the majority of the songs are actually instrumental tracks, enriched with sounds, effects, voices other details one only comes across when listening to the album several times. Hence, ZIPDRIVEDISCO might also be attractive to people who are not too much into Hip Hop music.

Jahre als DJ und Produzent gearbeitet, meist im Hip Hop Bereich - aber der musikalische Fokus hat sich über die Jahre verlagert und verändert und
wir waren dabei ein neues, live eingespieltes Band Projekt in Angriff zu nehmen. Drums, Gitarren, Bass und Piano/Orgel. Keine Samples mehr,
keine Beats oder Raps – ich war einfach gerade etwas gelangweilt von Hip Hop und daher daran interessiert etwas anderes zu machen. Irgendwie
etwas, das so klingt wie die Bands oder Künstler die ich zuvor in Samples verwendet habe. Deswegen musste sich auch das Studio Setup
entsprechend ändern und angepasst werden.
Dabei stieß ich auf meine ganzen alten ZIP Disks auf denen ich meine Arbeit in der Vergangenheit meist gespeichert habe, einfach weil es schnell
und bequem war – und aufgrund der Tatsache, dass ich nicht meinen Studio PC oder andere Geräte anschalten und hochfahren musste wenn ich
an der MPC einen Beat produzieren wollte. Ich habe die Sachen zum Teil seit Jahren nicht mehr gehört und fing dann einfach während des Umbaus
im Studio an die ganzen Dateien durchzugehen. Es war wirklich überraschend festzustellen, wie viele Konzepte, Beats, Fragmente, Loops und nicht
fertig gestellte Songs ich eigentlich auf Lager hatte, manche vor über zehn Jahren produziert; mal ganz abgesehen von den ganzen hochkarätigen
Gästen deren dope Vocals bisher niemand gehört hat. Es wurde also klar, dass es irgendwann an der Zeit war, die ganzen angefangenen Tracks
endlich mal fertig zu machen, halbwegs sinnvoll zusammenzustellen und zu veröffentlichen. Also habe ich mich im Winter 2016 ein paar Wochen im
Studio eingeschlossen und fertig gemacht was ging. Manche Dateien wollten sich nicht mehr öffnen lassen, bei anderen konnte man nicht mehr
wirklich was am alten Arrangement, dem Sound oder der Sample Qualität machen. Aber am Ende hatte ich recht schnell knapp 30 Songs fertig und
fing an fehlende Vocals oder Updates einzusammeln, einfach um die wichtigsten und besten Tracks komplett fertig zu kriegen – die, die ich
unbedingt auf der Platte haben wollte – and here we go!
Die Vinyl LP kommt mit 16 Songs und ist eigentlich ein ziemlich klassisches Hip Hop oder Rap Album – während die CD ein anderes Gefühl
aufkommen lässt wenn man sie von Anfang bis Ende hört. Die CD beinhaltet 29 Songs und besteht aus viel Instrumental Hip Hop, Effekten, Sounds
und zahllosen Details – und ich persönlich finde sie noch immer sehr unterhaltsam anzuhören, obwohl das nicht oft der Fall ist nach der
Fertigstellung eines Albums. Bis dahin hat man manche Stellen mehrere hunderte Mal angehört und hat eigentlich erst Mal genug davon nach dem
Mastering. Ich denke daher, dass aufgrund des Mix von Vocal- und Instrumental Tracks sogar Leute die mit Hip Hop sonst nicht so viel zu tun haben
an dem Album gefallen finden könnten. Die 12“ legt man primär auf wenn man laut, guten, fett produzierten Hip Hop hören will – und einen
Plattenspieler hat - die CD kann man genauso laut, dagegen aber auch einfach entspannt und leiser im Auto nebenher hören. Zudem ist auch das
eigentliche Produkt einfach cool geworden. Die 12“ kommt auf grauem Vinyl das wirklich dope aussieht mit den bunten Labels, die Innenhülle ist
beidseitig bedruckt und beinhaltet Liner Notes für jeden Song – und die CD kann, weil sie ebenfalls in einem extra bedrucktem Karton Sleeve
konfektioniert ist, auch außerhalb der Plattenhülle bequem als Stand-alone Release verwendet werden. CDs die Platten beiliegen laufen nämlich oft
Gefahr, irgendwo zu verschwinden weil sie nicht entsprechend wertig verpackt und gekennzeichnet sind.“

Harry and more …over 20 years now, mostly in the Hip Hop space – but the musical focus switched over the years and we were planning for a live band project at the
time. Drums, Bass, Guitar and Keys. No more samples, beats, raps – I was just bored with Hip Hop and was interested in doing someting else,
something that would sound like the bands or artists I loved to sample. That’s why the studio setup had to change.
During this time I came across all my old ZIP disks on which I used to save my samples and MPC work in the past, just because it was fast and
convenient – and due to the fact that I didn’t have to switch on my studio computer or any other device when producing a beat. I haven’t listened to
the stuff on these disks for years but started to go through all the material again while working on the new studio setup. It was a real surprise to me
how many concepts, beats, fragments, loops and finished songs I actually had on stock that were never released, some of them produced over ten
years ago - not to mention all the high ranking guests who delivered great vocals nobody ever heard. Hence, it was just a matter of time that all this
material had to be finalized, compiled and released. I took action, locked me up in the studio for some weeks in Winter 2016 and started finalizing
the stuff, at least the songs I could. Some files were corrupted or destroyed and I wasn’t really able to change the old arrangement, sound or quality.
However, I quickly had about 30 songs ready and started to collect missing vocals or updates to existing ones, just so I was able to finalize all songs
I wanted to have on the album – and here we go!
The Vinyl LP which features 16 songs is pretty much a straight forward Hip Hop or Rap album - whileas the CD creates a different type of feeling if
one listens to it from start to the end, it features 29 songs. It contains a lot of instrumental music, sounds, effects and countless details - and I
personally still find it very entertaining to listen to, even though that is rarely the case after finishing an album because I may have heard it some
hundred times over the past 3 months. However, I think that even people who are not into Hip Hop music too much will enjoy the album to some
extend. Also, the product is just nice. The 12“ grey colored Vinyl looks awesome with the contrasting labels, the LP sleeve is nicely printed as well
and features some liner notes for each song - and even the CD can easily be treated as a stand-alone release at home and outside the Vinyl box
since it comes in an extra thick, fully printed CD paper tray.
