Lucid Logic (Illogic & Lucid Optics) Lucid Logic Blue Vinyl Edition

“Lucid Logic” is the latest project by duo Lucid Logic consisting of Illogic & Lucid Optics from Columbus, Ohio. The pairing of Columbus emcee Illogic with San Jose produce/emcee/vocalist Lucid Optics shows a lot of promise, and now they fulfill that promise with their self-titled debut album.

Illogic has been releasing music for over fifteen years, and he’s worked with several different producers and collaborators before, such as Blueprint and Blockhead, to name a couple. While each different project has had its own different sound to it, none have clicked in the way that Lucid Logic does. One explanation for that is that Lucid Optics provides just enough difference to play off of Illogic.

What this means in practical terms is that on the production side of things, Lucid Optics provides plenty of moments of mid-tempo, synth-driven beats that allow Illogic to sit in the pocket and deliver his trademark deliberate flow, but then he balances that out with a playful side that brings in touches of R&B and indie rock.

This all comes together to create a style of hip hop that is a little bit weird, but still has a great pop sensibility to it. Lyrically, it’s the type of album that’s really easy to form a personal bond with, as both artists have crafted songs that have room for introspection and discussion of the struggles of life, but are ultimately optimistic and encouraging. Lucid Logic find just the right balance, though, and the music just sounds fun and empowering.

Lucid Logic is a study in balance, giving you hip hop from two artists with different styles coming together to give you an album that sounds great with the volume turned up as you drive around in your car this summer. It will get you in your feels, and then will make you want to pound your fist and shout “I can do it!”
