Spokes Green Eyes EP

After a couple of limited white label drops, Coyote Records are back in action handing yet another full vinyl debut to a producer swiftly on the rise – something the label is making a very welcome habit of. Loose Synths blog and club night cohort, Spokes, makes finely crafted beats at 140, loosely centred around grime with heavy dashes of melody and subby low-end. He has already provided vital inclusions to both previous Coyote Kings compilations, has featured in sets from the likes of Dusk & Blackdown, Slackk and Mumdance; long standing out as one-to-watch for those listening closely. With the “Green Eyes” EP, Spokes has elevated his productions to next level territory. “Lo Pan Strikes” is already something of an underground anthem that has been doing the rounds for a minute; soaring pentatonic melodies evoke vivid images of the ancient Orient, offset by futuristic blasts of percussion and precision engineered bass. The playful, eastern motifs re-appear on “Ritalin”, as bright synths swirl and fragment in every direction over even sparser drums and bleeps. Sinogrime was always one of the more niche sub-genre terms but whatever you want to call it, Spokes has nailed it here with his lean, anti-gravitational take on the sound. On “Mutations”, Spokes raises the sub-pressure as the mood darkens a notch; tautly-driven 808 bass and faintly sinister melodic flourishes slope and roll with intent. Rounding off the EP, E.M.M.A turns-in a remix of “Ritalin” that is nothing short of stunning, completely switching up the vibe with a blurry haze of shimmering synths and reconfigured basslines.
