For his next move, he's swerved left, collaborating with a crew of Chicago pals led by Nico Segal (a.k.a. Donnie Trumpet) on a warm, evocative pop-soul-jazz album that comes straight from the heart. Segal's horn parts and orchestration often provide the most charm — see the sublime paired tracks "Nothing Came to Me" and "Something Came to Me." Elsewhere, Chance stands out on the goofy "Wanna Be Cool," and guest appearances from veterans like Erykah Badu and newcomers such as Migos' Quavo add extra spice to this sweet treat.

Following Tropical Dandy (1975) and Bon Voyage Co. (1976), Paraiso is the concluding saga in his “Tropical Trilogy.” The album can be seen as a turning point in Haruomi Hosono’s career, having been newly signed to Alfa Records by label head Kunihiko Murai. Hosono expands on the Van Dyke Parks-inspired tropical funk styles explored in the previous albums, and arrives at a captivating fusion sound that’s at times equally earthy and exotic. Hinting at the breakthrough sounds he would perfect with Yellow Magic Orchestra, Hosono uses synthesizers to provide otherworldly textures and a spiritual undertone to songs like “Femme Fatale” and the title track. On his Caribbean-style take on the Okinawan folk song “Asatoya Yunta” and the synth/gamelan workout of “Shambhala Signal,” Hosono takes traditional melodies and mixes them into his own inimitable stew. Featuring a host of well-known musicians like Taeko Ohnuki, Hiroshi Sato and his future bandmates Yukihiro Takahashi and Ryuichi Sakamoto, Paraiso perfectly encapsulates Hosono’s eccentric worldview that has shaped his solo career, right before his techno-pop project would blast him into the stratosphere.

Founded in Rome in 1964, ‘Il Gruppo D’Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza’ was a collective of noted and noteworthy composers who challenged the very structure and performance of music itself. Today the most celebrated of its members is the renowned film composer Ennio Morricone but each contributor has an intriguing history in Italian music. Drawing on Jazz, Serialism, Musique Concrete and other extended techniques, the group performed on many of Morricone’s experimental soundtracks of the 1970s including, A Quiet Place In The Country and Gli Occhi Freddi Della Paura). The collective improvised live (according to strict exercises) and in the studio (recording for RCA, Deutsche Grammaphon, General Music and others). In 1970 ‘Il Gruppo’ (as ‘The Group’) recorded The Feed-back (for RCA Italy), an insane amalgam of avant-improvisation and motorik Krautrock-influenced beats that understandably has become one of the most collectable ‘Library Music’ related LPs ever issued. In 1971 ‘Il Gruppo’ returned to the studio to record a sequel. This is that record. For reasons unknown Niente was never originally issued but one listen will convince that not only is it the sequel to one of the most sought after LPs of all time, but it is also by far its superior. Brain melting jams collide with unhinged intensity in a hothouse of Italian avant-improv. You have been warned.

· Previously unreleased Psych-Funk masterpiece.

From its humble beginnings as an art gallery in the 1950s,
Preservation Hall has become an indelible landmark
of New Orleans thanks to a choice meeting in 1961.
Philadelphia business school graduate and tuba-player
Allan Jaffe had been honeymooning in New Orleans with
his wife when he discovered the French Quarter, where
Preservation Hall resided. The couple grew to love the
French Quarter and the concerts that the hall had been
hosting to drum up interest in the art gallery.
Allan Jaffe ended up staying in New Orleans, and even
took on the job of managing Preservation Hall, and
hosting a cavalcade of local Louisiana musicians, whose
ages ranged from 60 to 90, and had been dealing with
poverty and local racism. These musicians, along
with Jaffe himself, would become the rotating lineup
of Preservation Hall's house jazz band, and attract
audiences for miles to come to the French Quarter to hear
their traditional take on jazz music, eventually branching
out to tour the United States, and put out records.
One of their most celebrated is their first album with
Columbia Records, the 1977 album New Orleans (Vol. 1),
which with a title like that it's no surprise that it wears its
love for the Louisiana city on its sleeve. The 7-piece band
joyously shares its take on a vareity of Dixieland
standards, spirituals, and a few blues numbers. The
music is simplistic and light on technical or virtuostic flair,
but none of that matters to the album's players, whose
infectious and revelrous spirit, and genuine love of
traditional jazz can be felt through the speakers.

Fully licensed re-issue on 678 Records /// Produced in analogue form directly from the original master. /// Comes in a beautiful 1969 REPLICA sleeve and includes 4 PAGE insert with photos and extensive liner notes, extra insert with English liner notes, replica postcard and full length CD with + 5 bonus tracks /// This is the first edition of 500 copies.

It is a minor miracle how this reissue came into being.
In 2010 I got in touch with Milou, Rita Hovink’s daughter, with a plan to try and create a little more interest in her mother’s music.
From Milou's attic came a removal box full with various tapes from Rita. It was a literally a mixed bag, the legacy of a very diverse music career that ended far too soon.
Among the tapes I found the original master tape from the studio recordings that Rita made in Hilversum in the summer of 1969 for her debut album Love me or leave me.

On this specific tape we found the original first mix down of the recordings, a fully fledged sound source of the first generation at the highest playback speed (15 ips) in vibrant stereo. At the time it was customary to make a high-quality production copy of the master which, with the pieces assembled in the right order, served as source tape for the pressing plant. In the unlikely event that something happened to the production copy, one could always revert to the master.
It remains to be unclear how and why exactly this master tape came into Rita’s possession, but a fact is that we now had a source to do something very special.
There then followed a lengthy negotiation process to get the recordings licensed from the official master owner Universal Music, owner of the catalogue of the former record company Phonogram. That process finally came to a favourable end at the end of 2018. So 678 records is pleased and honoured to present this exclusive audiophile reissue of Rita Hovink, a highlight from the years when her repertoire was consisted mostly jazz

Added to this completely analogously produced reissue of the album is a CD with the album in its entirety. As an extra we offer five exclusive bonus tracks: the song Johnny Guitar recorded together with guitarist Wim Overgaauw. The song also appears on her second album, but the exclusive version offered here is from an earlier date and hails from her archives; it is sung much more intensely than the album version.
You will also find here the four pieces that 678 records already issued in 2013 on an EP that has been sold out for some time. They are recordings from 1972 and Rita is accompanied by Casey & the Pressure Group, the band of Cees Schrama. She performs Carole Kings I feel the earth move and also a full version of Jerry Jeff Walkers. Mr. Bojangles made popular by Sammy Davis Jr. and Nina Simone's interpretation. There are also two reworking’s of songs previously released on her debut album: For every man there's a woman and the Beatles cover The fool on the hill.

With this reissue, the debut album of Rita Hovink, more than fifty years after it was first recorded, the disc gets another chance to shine. A totally forgotten masterpiece in a record industry that is hit driven. How unjust that is, will become obvious to anyone who now puts the needle in the groove

‘Earthly Delights’ is a forgotten 1978 free-jazz masterpiece by bass player, composer and improviser David Wertman, alongside his Sun Ensemble.

Born in 1952 and raised in Queens NY, Wertman’s distinctive upright playing style was entirely self-taught. He cut his teeth in the notorious New York Jazz lofts, jamming for hours and hours with the likes of Billy Bang, Arthur Blythe, Marion Brown, Steve Reid, Dave Pike, William Parker, Brandon Ross and Charles Tyler to name but a few.

‘Earthly Delights’ is the first recording by the Sun Ensemble band and features the original line-up of Greg Wall (Baritone Saxophone), Jay Conway (Drums), John Sprague Jr. (Flute and Percussion), David Swerdlove (Soprano/Alto Saxophone), and John Zieman (Synthesizer). John Sprague Jr. financed and produced the album, releasing it on his own label Sweet Earth Records, a short-lived but bountiful imprint, perhaps best known for issuing Sun Ra And His Arkestra’s 1979 album “The Other Side Of The Sun”.

‘Earthly Delights’ is perhaps best described as loosely composed, or highly improvised, depending on where you stand on such subjective matters. Containing just 4 compositions, ‘Earthly Delights’ explores man’s relationship with nature; at times subtle and delicate, at times wide and sweeping in its gestures. The record’s spiritual message is conveyed by heartfelt, virtuoso performances from all six players, drifting together seamlessly from one sonic wave to the next.

Saxophonist Rudy van Dijk graduated from the conservatory in Zwolle. He was also one of the co-founders of “Blues Dimension”, a Dutch super group in the sixties. ‘Buntús Rince’ translates from Irish as ‘basic rhythms’, and this new compilation explores how Irish musicians were influenced by strands of different genres of music from around the world, merging them to create their own unique sounds. The compilation features some of the most innovative and talented figures in the history of Irish music and includes rare Irish jazz, fusion and folk outliers from the 1970s and early 1980s from musicians relatively unknown outside of Ireland.
Often regarded as a musical backwater, the 1970s finally saw Ireland begin to make its mark on international music. The nature of this feat is all the more commendable, considering how isolated and conservative the country still was in the middle of the last century. The emergence of acts like Skid Row, Thin Lizzy and Van Morrison instilled in budding young Irish musicians the belief to dream big.
Unlike many other European countries, Ireland had not benefited from the cultural impact of immigration. Pioneering Irish musicians did not have access to the type of vibrant music scenes ubiquitous to most European cities at that time. With no talented players or even in some cases recordings of the music, they had to cultivate and invent their own small scenes.
A jazz scene had begun to blossom in Dublin in the late 1950s. Self-taught players like Noel Kelehan and Louis Stewart emerged as the Irish standard-bearers. Their level of musicianship saw them play with some of the world’s most renowned artists. The 1960s would see the emergence of the ‘beat’ scene in Ireland, with groups like Granny’s Intentions, Taste and Eire Apparent finally challenging the hegemony of Irish Showbands. Change was in the air.
The late 1960s also saw many Irish emigrants returning home, bringing with them inspiration from the new styles and sounds of London and further afield. The arrival in the late 1960s of pirate radio stations like Radio Caroline, new music magazines and the availability of music on vinyl meant that different genres were now becoming more accessible. The musical landscape of the country began to transform and evolve, influencing a new generation of musicians in the process.
The 1970s saw advancements in studio technology. 8-track studios began appearing in Dublin, offering more opportunities for groups to record singles and albums. Synthesizers and other instruments were also becoming easier to acquire as the younger generation turned to electric jazz and fusion music.
While the level of musicianship was high, the levels of opportunities in Ireland were still very limited. Many groups and solo musicians had to emigrate to try and succeed.
Thankfully for those who remained, this new emerging scene didn’t go totally unnoticed and local labels began to take a chance on more obscure Irish groups. Labels like Mulligan and also producers like John D’Ardis and Terri Hooley championed and documented music from the Irish underground of the 1970s.
Their valuable work is a common thread which connects many of the tracks on this compilation. From the soaring flute playing of Brian Dunning, to the swinging piano of Noel Kelehan and the sonic force of Jolyon Jackson’s synthesizers; ‘Buntús Rince’ lifts the lid on a vastly underappreciated period of Irish music history.
One for the collectors.

Being introduced to the work of Ludovico Einaudi at a young age, Joram started composing and home recording his own neoclassical piano pieces. The works are electroacoustic spaces of sound with a felt, warm, melancholic undertone - translating indefinable moods into music.

The Blue Note Record label needs little introduction. Musically, graphically and sonically iconic, the label created and defined the golden age of modern jazz on record. Founded in 1939 by German émigré Alfred Lion, the label's roster of artists is a litany of giants – Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver, Lee Morgan, Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, Herbie Hancock and many more. With peerless musicians in the grooves, the legendary Rudy Van Gelder behind the boards, and graphic design genius Reid Miles creating emblematic artwork for every release, Blue Note – 'the Cadillac of the jazz lines' – was outstanding in every way.

Volume 9 of Jazzman's Spiritual Jazz series takes a close look at the deeper side of Blue Note – from the experimental avant-garde explored by younger musicians such as Bobby Hutcherson, Joe Henderson and Pete La Roca, to the exciting new developments in modal sounds put forward by stalwarts Hank Mobley, Jackie McLean and Duke Pearson. The music we have selected shows how musicians working with the label responded to a period of dramatic social and sonic change, charting the route toward the esoteric and spiritualised sounds that would dominate the deepest jazz of the 1970s.

As ever, Blue Note had lit the path, and this new Spiritual Jazz collection shows that the progressive and underground jazz sound of the 1960s was not only the preserve of obscure artists and private pressings. Blue spirits and heavy sounds on Blue Note – the finest in jazz since 1939, brought to you by Jazzman.

In 2016, Cultures of Soul Records released Boston
Creative Jazz Scene 1970-1983, a groundbreaking
compilation spotlighting the often-overlooked
progressive jazz environment that thrived in Beantown
through the seventies into the eighties. Now, following
up on this groundbreaking work, Cultures of Soul is
proud to present a crisp reissue of the eponymous (and
sole) album by the Boston jazz-fusion outfit THING.
Formed by confederates who met at the Berklee School
of Music and led by the creatively restless saxophonist
and jazz educator Arni Cheatham, Thing were a regular
fixture in Boston clubs in the seventies, as comfortable
plying the rock and funk idioms as they were in
jazz. Their 1972 LP documents two of their live sets,
showcasing their simmering, funky and spiritual
freeform jazz, very much in the vein of early seventies
jazz-rock experiments by Miles Davis, Weather Report
and the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
The two suites featured on the album are fully
improvised, featuring the musicians spontaneously
generating and developing musical motifs in real time,
bouncing ideas off each other in a communion that
is equally suitable for meditating...or dancing like
tomorrow will never arrive.
THING is a worthy glimpse into the experimentation and
adventurousness that made the seemingly uptight city
of Boston a magnet for musical mavericks.

Genre:Organic Grooves
Renowned for his high energy live performances, a
technical virtuosity which allowed him to play multiple
instruments simultaneously, and deeply held
convictions for political and social justice, Rahsaan
Roland Kirk was a highly eccentric figure in the jazz
genre, but also an incredibly influential one. Maintaining
an illustrious career stretching from 1955 to his passing
in 1977, Kirk had performed and collaborated with the
likes of Quincy Jones & Charles Mingus, and brought
new and exciting techniques and styles to jazz,
pioneering the usage of circular breathing, and utilizing
unorthodox musique concrete instrumentation in his
pieces, including broadcast footage, sirens, alarm
clocks, and other non-musical devices.
1973's Prepare Thyself To Deal With A Miracle is a
prime example of Rahsaan Roland Kirk's genius. His
9th album with Atlantic Records featured a powerhouse
group of session musicians, including Dick Griffin
on Trombone, Ron Burton on Piano, and Ralph
MacDonald on percussion, while Kirk himself works
overtime, providing alto and tenor saxophone, clarinet,
flute, nose flute, and what he referred to as
"black mystery pipes." (A length of garden hose.)
Prepare Thyself featured multiple jazz concertos
running a gamut of genres, ranging from free jazz to
avant-garde to hard bop, while creating layers upon
layers of aural architecture, and droning, sonic pillars of
sound. An unheralded masterpiece of jazz exploration
and frantic, chromatic expression.

Joanne Forman’s Cave Vaults of the Moon created in 1987 for an exhibit of sculptures in Taos, New Mexico is a mesmerizing score for voice, Ensoniq Mirage, Juno 106, flute, guitar and effects. The playful extra-terrestrial recording wafted through the exhibit every day for its duration and then lay dormant for nearly 30 years. Unearthed now, Cave Vaults of the Moon sounds prescient and timeless, as if Pep Llopis and Iasos scored a Wicker Man remake set on Mars. Restored, remastered and cut using DMM.
We humans, the nascent beings that we are, still haven’t quite figured out the full potential of music. Dancing, meditating, emoting, protesting; these are all pretty basic. But what if we communicated more complex ideas with music? What if we codified all of our activities with music? This idea came to composer Joanne Forman.
when commissioned in 1987 to create the soundscape for an environmental exhibition of sculpture called Artifacts from an Alien Civilization in Taos, New Mexico. The sculptures, elaborate ruins that had been found on the moon, begged the question: who created them and for what purpose?
Joanne Forman imagined that Earth’s moon was a vacation spot for advanced beings from another galaxy. In her mind, the sculptures in the exhibit were the remnants of a deserted playground. Cave Vaults of the Moon became a collection of sonic texts describing the recreational activities that went on there; earth-viewing,
collecting information, building and playing.

Back in the day, French pianist, composer and all-round jazz superstar Jean-François Quiévreux, a.k.a. Jef Gilson, was up there alongside the likes of peers John Coltrane, Oscar Peterson, and Sun Ra. In a fitting homage to the decades worth of sublime music, and his sad passing away in 2012, French quarter Palm Unit have released a lively, honest tribute, upbeat and contemporary re-interpretative vision of his legacy.
Gilson has been noted for changing the face of bebop with free-jazz and afro. Along the way his big band featured the likes of Lloyd Miler, Bill Coleman, Michel Portal, and others. With his own recording studio and label Palm Records, Gilson released music from greats including Byard Lancaster, David S. Ware, François Jeanneau, and more. He also helped embed a more entho style to the world of jazz, inspired by his visits to Madagascar, which resulted in the famous Malagasy jazz albums.
Palm Unit are a wildly eclectic super-group of jazz greats includes uKanDanZ's saxophonist Lionel Martin, keyboardist Fred Escoffier from Le Sacre du Tympan, drummer Philippe 'Pipon' Garcia whose mostly known from his worth with the Erik Truffaz Quartet, and special guest Del Rabenja -- who played alongside Gilson in Malagasy -- on the Magascan valiha harp. Palm Unit plays Gilson’s repertoire without any a priori, in a totally complex-free manner, reinventing it whilst preserving its original essence. The keyboards sound almost psychedelic (and often not that far from the style of Eddy Louiss on Jef Gilson’s 60’s albums), the sax scratches, mews and wails, whilst the drums make the whole thing swing. Even Del Rabenja was surprised to rediscover the songs still sounding so modern, decades after they were created.

It’s been a hot minute since the tropical sounds of Mo Kolours have graced the airwaves, so it’s with great pleasure that we see him return to 22a via a choice selection of cuts presented on a limited 7” vinyl, with original artwork designed by the man himself!

Side A opens with ‘Cerasee Doctor,’ a classic Mo Kolours production. Hip Hop meets Dub Reggae, with a catchy vocal loop throughout, equipped with a healthy dollop of dub sirens – this one is sure to grace many a soundsystem worldwide! ‘Margoze’ follows and takes the listener on a journey to West Africa where cowbells and syncopated rhythms take lead whilst the distant sound of local dialogue blends seamlessly in and out of the mix, rooting it deep in its African foundation.

Side B begins with ‘Goya,’ which brings about a fusion of traditional Vietnamese folk mixed with snippets of slap bass to create a collage of worldly sounds – a technique synonymous with the acclaimed producer. The EP finishes with the title track ‘Meroe,’ where Mo Kolours once again effortlessly fuses ancient and modern sounds to create a dancefloor winner. Its up-tempo rhythm keeps heads nodding with it’s low pulsing bass line rumbling beneath, whilst tribal chants bring euphoric moments to the mix leaving the listener feeling positively uplifted.

In conclusion it’s a mini EP that packs a big punch! And most importantly it sees the return of a heralded music maker.

This release is limited to 300 copies so don’t sleep!

Locatelli catches the essence of Lacy's music through a series of creative renditions of historical compositions such as Morning Joy, Blues for Aida and Trickles. A very important statement furtherly enhanced by Jason Weiss's liner notes, author of "Conversations with Steve Lacy".

Like some musical virus, jazz spread across the world in the 1920s. It was, in a very real sense, the first global 'world' music. Due in part to the improvisatory and open form of jazz, it lent itself very easily to merging with, and adopting to, local musical styles, structures and instrumentation; its protean nature meant that it was coopted and embraced by musicians across the world, from Japan in the far east, the northern expanses of Scandinavia, down to the myriad of cultures across African continent and further on to the deepest and farthest reaches of South America. And one of those South American countries that took jazz to its heart was Chile.
From its first arrival in the 1920s until the 1940s, jazz was an immensely popular music in Chile, often seen as a sign of sophisticated modernity. The latest dances such as the charleston, shimmy and one-step were popular among the middle classes who saw themselves as the vanguard of the new emerging cultural force who were taking Chile into the club of modern, industrial economies. The first established jazz group in Chile was the Royal Orchaestra led by Pablo Garrido, founded in 1924. Other key figures in this crucial foundation period were band leaders and directors like Isidro Benitez and Bernado Lacasia and musicians such as trumpeter Luis Aranguiz, drummer Victor Tapia and tenor saxophonist Mario Escobar.
Building upon the pioneering work of these key early figures, the period of the late 30s and mid 40s saw the jazz movement in Chile become less of a popular style with mass appeal and more of an aesthetic 'lifestyle' that saw conscious and deliberate establishing of fan clubs, networks of record collectors and aspirant musicians building a homegrown, hungry culture focused around jazz clubs, most notably the Jazz Club of Santiago, founded in 1943. Major figures during this period include Domingo Santa Cruz, José Hosiasson and Jose Luis Cordova as well as groups such as Santiago Stompers, Chicago Blue Star and Retaguardia Jazz Band.
But it was from the mid-50s and into the early 60s that saw the emergence of a newly sophisticated and talented set of musicians who were to show the way ahead. This was the era of the rise of the modernist school of jazz: bebop, 'cool jazz' and modal jazz, exemplified by the stylistic leaps being made in the USA by the likes of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, and John Coltrane. Foremost among the Chilean musicians who took direction from this were key figures such as Mariano Casanova, Roberto Lecaros and, most notably, a pianist and composer who was to have a critical influence on the development of modern jazz in Chile, Omar Naheul.
Nahuel was to prove a pioneering and guiding figure in the consolidation of modern jazz in Chile and, more broadly, South America. As a composer and musician, he showed that Chilean artists could perform and record high quality, convincing jazz. Indeed, Nahuel would go on to record the very first album by a jazz group in Chile, the eponymous Nahuel Jazz Quartet, in 1963.
To be strictly accurate, the Nahuel Jazz Quartet was a somewhat flexible ensemble; it could be a quintet or a trio depending upon what was being asked of it. In fact, Nahuel's frst group in 1959 was a trio, something of a prototype for his later groups. However, it would be the classic quartet line up that was to prove the most influential and significant jazz group in Chile during the whole of the 1960s. Made up of leader and pianist Nahuel, bass player Alfonso Barrios, drummer Orlando Avendano (replacing original drummer Sergio Meli) and saxophonist Patricio Ramirez, the quartet would make an indelible mark on Chilean music, one that still casts a long shadow over their jazz scene to this day.
From the moment they were formed in 1960, the Nahuel Jazz Quartet looked and sounded the part of a modern jazz group suited to the times. They were organised and professional and their arrival set a new standard: fresh, dynamic, clean and cool. They immediately made an impact and were soon a regular and popular act making appearances at the Concepción Jazz Festival and International Jazz Festival of Mar del Plata.
Nahuel even went as far as managing his own jazz club in an effort to foster a secure, creative space within which modern jazz could flourish in Chile. The Nahuel Jazz Club in Agustinas Street would be a crucible to modern and avant-garde players.
The group's debut album, recorded in May 1963, was to prove a great incentive to many other Chliean jazz acts, not least the Chilean Jazz Messengers and the Village Trio. However, the album proved more that just a motivator and inspiration to others, it stands by itself as a solid, tight jazz album. Recored for the independent label Ediciones LR Ortiz and engineered by Rafael Hidalgo, it was a genuine milestone by being the first full jazz album recorded in Chile by a professional Chilean group. The personnel on the session is the 'classic' Naheul Quartet line-up: Omar Nahuel (piano), Patricio Ramírez (alto sax), Alfonso Barrios (double bass) and Orlando Avendaño (drums). The core quartet is augmented with Patricio Lara (clarinet) on the original composition 'Tranquilo', as well as two bebop covers: Charlie Parker's 'Donna Lee' and Dizzy Gillespie's 'Here it is'.

After the release of the album, there were a few line up changes as Avendaño left the group in 1963 and Ramírez followed in 1964, and there were further band changes in the following years as Nahuel began to modify the line-ups of his ensembles, incorporating drummers like Waldo Caceres and Jaime Farfan, bassists Boris Castilla and Nelson Gamboa and tenor player Mario Escobar Jr.
Sadly, the important strides made by the group would be tragically cut short when Naheul was killed in a car accident in February 1969 while travelling to the branch of his jazz club in Viña del Mar. He was only 33. However, in the short years of his active music career, Naheul made a lasting impression on Chilean jazz and, as musicologist Álvaro Menanteau says in his book The History of Jazz in Chile, “the '60s were born and died with Omar Nahuel”.

More famous for his great film music works than for his Jazz piano playing, composer and orchestra conductor, Armando Trovajoli was in fact one of the very first musicians to carry the standard of Jazz in Italy. Originally released on Italian RCA in 1959, "Trovajoli Jazz piano" was his first official Jazz album and today after 60 years from its release it still stands as an important proof of an early Italian approach to Jazz. This is a fine session based on a perfect mixture of all-time favorite Jazz standards, among them: "These foolish things" and "Round Midnight", and some highly sophisticated renditions of Broadway Musical themes such as "Have You Met Miss Jones?"

Collocutor to release new single ‘The Angry One’, announce gigs at Jazz Cafe and We Out Here Festival
Tamar Collocutor is back with her Collocutor ensemble for On the Corner’s first 7”
’T.A.O’ is a rage, a visceral expression of what gathers within, and the counter-reaction to our times. Verve, distorted psych guitar in combat with a flaming, rolling, discordant, flowing barrage of horns. This single is the anomaly from Collocutor’s forthcoming third album. Rooted in personal loss, it is a scream of bewilderment that builds to encompass the social, political and environmental crisis of our times.
The flip sees Tamar and Magnus P.I. (ex-Collocutor) sparring in an in-the-moment sonic Rumble in the Jungle. Lunging off of T.A.O’s bass line, Tamar tares hard up-river to follow the calling of ancestral drums into a cacophonous parade. Trance inducing rhythm and screams. Across winds of wood and brass Tamar’s voice weaves a rich vein of quality throughout the resurgent UK jazz/instrumental music scene.
The forthcoming LP (autumn 2019) is Tamar’s most personal yet, a reflection about grief. Artistic vision stewed in an emotive concoction. Loss, life changes and ‘Continuation’ paralleled at the macro level with unimaginable political malaise.
The record is an attempt to give voice to the (sometimes surprising) emotional states of being experienced, coloured further by the discordant machinations of our times.
From the inner microcosm of self to the (macro) overarching societal crisis Tamar has fulfilled her vision ‘of writing music that wants to be written’ with her ensembles third LP.

‘Joyrobix’ is Brummy-abroad Joe Snape’s flooring return to Slip: a songbook of nimble, aching pop that wrings raggedy solace from dejection and displacement. Begun as a danceable refix of pieces for chamber ensemble toured the last three years, production on ‘Joyrobix’ stalled sharply in 2016. Instead of a self-confident exercise in documentation, the record twisted into a darker, more lyrical original: a period portrait of dislocation and burnout following Snape’s move to the US in 2015.

Erwin Somer himself studied art and music in Groningen and had his own bands in Canada and the Netherlands. Furthermore, the band consisted of the former rhythm section of the famous Dutch blues group “Cuby and the Blizzards”: Hans La Faille, Helmig van de Vegt and Jaap van Eik. Saxophonist Rudy van Dijk graduated from the conservatory in Zwolle. He was also one of the co-founders of “Blues Dimension”, a Dutch super group in the sixties. Wanubalé – nine guys from Berlin, inspired by the city's fresh Jazz scene and distinct club culture. This band sets out to define their own, highly danceable version of Jazz, Neo Soul and Funk.
The Wanubalés are first rate musicians. They tend to take their time writing arrangements, yet they are careful not to overly emphasize their jazz skills. Songwriting is a collaborative affair, everything is developed organically. Just like the band name, which dates back to the days of fooling around in the schoolyard, playing with syllables ("nuba" came first). Sound was crucial. Some say "Wanubalé" means "brother" in Swahili.
Wanubalé's instrumental debut album was recorded by Axel Reinemer in Berlin's Jazzanova Studio in 2018. The musicians don't hide their influences: Snarky Puppy, Fat Freddy's Drop, plus younger acts like Hiatus Kaiyote and Nubiyan Twist. But Wanubalé do their own thing, having produced and arranged the album. Wanubalé: four horns, two drummers, guitar, bass, keyboards. Nine musicians with a knack for funky breaks, might brass sounds and great melodies.

"A new compilation with music from the Upper East of Ghana where Frafra is the regional language. All artists are from in and around Bongo, the town where Ghanaian star King Ayisoba was born and raised. This is a collection of styles, all recorded in Francis Ayamga's Top Link studio. Ayamga is also drummer in King Ayisoba's band and creates beats and bass for the new Bongo stars.

Bongo is a small town and is the capital of Bongo District, a district in the Upper East Region of Ghana. It’s a twenty minute drive to the border of Burkina Faso; “we share water” one of King Ayisoba’s band members once said. King Ayisoba, one of Ghana’s most famous musicians, was born and raised in Soe, a small village just outside Bongo; a fifteen minute drive on a sand road. Each time I visit the Bongo District, I have to visit King Ayisoba’s family too and pay my respects. Ayisoba’s father and mother are old but vital, they still work the land. I heard that during the harvest time everyone is a farmer. Young people come back home from the big cities like Accra and Kumasi to help with the harvesting and most of them have herded cows and goats when they were young.

Sitting on the back of Francis Ayamga’s motorbike we make many stops. Francis plays the traditiona drum in King Ayisoba’s band and he runs a studio in Bongo. He knows most of the people in Bongo, and there is always something new going on. Of course he has to explain why he has a white man on the back of his bike. The people in Bongo are proud of all the musicians and especially of King Ayisoba and his band who play the whole world and bring the Frafra tradition to all the continents. Actually he is teaching the world some Frafra along the way since King Ayisoba is well known for his powerful shouts and interaction with the audience.

During one of the King Ayisoba tours Francis gave me a pendrive full of music he recorded in his studio. I listened through all and heard a lot of great music. I made a selection, sat down with Francis and King Ayisoba and then came the idea to make a compilation that represents the music from the Upper East, focused on Bongo, all in Frafra and full of variation: rap, gospel, kologo and traditional chanting, it’s all there. I spent a week at Francis’ Top Link studio and met many great musicians. One of them was Zenabu, a traditional singer who brought her whole women group. They did not fit in the studio so we recorded them outside and it sounds beautiful.”

Ulysses Crockett studied classical piano from 6 to 14 years old, adding alto saxophone and flute at 16 years old while attending Oakland California's McClymonds High graduating in 1956 as student body president and Valedictorian entering Stanford University in the fall of 1956.
During the Lawrence Ferlinghetti Bay area beatnik era (circa 1957-1960), Ulysses' group was known as The Latin Jazz Quintet which included an early female bongo drummer named Joyce Zavaleta. Joyce had an extensive vinyl LP collection of afro-cuban records including compositions and performances of legendary bassist Israel 'Cachao' López and international known singer Celia Cruz. Joyce met U.C. Berkeley Student John Miller and taught him the Cuban piano styles. The regular members of the Afro-Blue Persuasion band consisted of John Miller - piano, Harald Haynes - congas, Robert Belinksy - drums, Ulysses Crockett - vibraphone, and Robert Bing Nathan - upright contrabass.
At nineteen years old each, bassist Paul Jackson (who appears with genius composer, performer and pianist Herbie Hancock) and tenor flautist Robert Harvey were both serving in the U.S. Army station located in the San Francisco base known as the Presidio. On weekends, both Paul and Robert would sit in with the Afro-Blue Persuasion band.
"Live at Haight Levels" is the one and only recorded live performance by the Afro-Blue Persuasion. Finally, the songs are going to see the light of the day after 52 years! This is afro-cuban jazz at its very best! A stunning treasure rarely to be found - unless it's on Mo-Jazz!

Anu Sun aka Anu The Giant works closely with Robert Glasper: first on the acclaimed Black Radio Project, and further on the Miles Ahead soundtrack and the recent Johnny Cash release Forver Words, where he and Robert wrote the music to a Cash poem Going Going Gone. After three years of work he is ready to release Sanguine Regum, self described as a genre merging album that is 'progressive adult contemporary - the maturation of Hip-Hop and jazz ‘ The album has a distinct solo-political slant with a positive outcome, celebrating the accomplishments of Black artists in today’s world. The title means ‘Blood Of Kings’, and the album features guests Robert Glasper, Casey Benjamin, Alex Han, Maurice Brown, Tone Whitfield, and many more.

Elvin Jones' connection to the John Coltrane
Quartet is inescapable, but it shouldn't be the only
defining feature of his career. After all, Jones
expanded the role of the jazz percussionist in the
post-bop era, and helped bridge the gap to more
avant-garde styles of drumming through his
virtuostic style. This style continued to develop
and grow after departing the Coltrane Quartet
(Due to displeasure over Coltrane's addition of a
second drummer) and going solo.
Before his departure however, Jones was already
a prolific figure in his own rite, having already
performed with the likes of Miles Davis and
Charles Mingus long before even connecting with
John Coltrane. He also regularly collaborated with
bassist and fellow Coltrane Quintet compatriot
Jimmy Garrison, forming the recording collective
the Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison Sextet, recording
several albums together. 1964's Illumination! was
one such album, which featured the rhythm
section pair joined by McCoy Tyner, also from the
Coltrane Quintet, on piano, as well as strong
session turns from Sonny Simmons
(Alto Sax/English Horn), Charles Davis
(Bari Sax), and William Lasha (Clarinet/Flute).
A highly sought after set of advanced hard
bop, featuring some of Jones' most powerful
percussion chops.

Delights is thrilled and honoured to release the new 7'' by Beta Hector (a.k.a. Simon Hill of Baby Charles, Derriere and MNP)! After a 7-year hiatus, Hill returns with two sides of raw cinematic psych-funk, recorded with an ensemble of his long-time musical allies. Infectious, tense and Noir-ish "King Lunp Theme" is backed with the warm, intimate and melancholic "Into The Light" on the flipside.
