Mal Waldron - The Quest
Mal Waldron
The Quest
LP | 1961 | EU | Reissue (Jazz Workshop)
23,99 €*
Release:1961 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
"Although often reissued under Eric Dolphy's name, this reissue gives the leadership back to pianist Mal Waldron. The seven originals not only feature altoist Dolphy (who makes a rare appearance on clarinet during "Warm Canto") but tenor-saxophonist Booker Ervin, Ron Carter (on cello) and Waldron. With bassist Joe Benjamin and drummer Charlie Persip giving alert support, the complex music (which falls between hard bop and the avant-garde) is successfully interpreted. Worth checking out." Art Pepper - The Return Of Art Pepper

The Return Of Art Pepper
LP | 1956 | EU | Reissue (Jazz Workshop)
23,99 €*
Release:1956 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
Originally recorded for Herb Kimmel's Jazz West label in August 1956. These were titled The Return of Art Pepper, since they were recorded shortly after he completed a jail sentence in 1956. As a result, Pepper's chops are a little rusty, but you can hear that he still has a passion for playing, and he does improve over the course of these tracks. For serious Pepper fans, it's worth a listen." Scott Yanow -All Music Guide
Roy Brooks - Beat

LP | 1963 | EU | Reissue (Jazz Workshop)
23,99 €*
Release:1963 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
"Recorded for Berry Gordy's short-lived Workshop Jazz imprint, Roy Brooks' simply but authoritatively titled Beat fuses the intellectual rigors of the modern idiom with the physical prowess of soul-jazz to create a record of uncommon scope and reach. Working with Horace Silver Quintet colleagues Blue Mitchell, Junior Cook, and Gene Taylor alongside Detroit contemporaries George Bohanon and Hugh Lawson, Brooks channels influences spanning the breadth of the Motor City scene, resulting in a clutch of challenging but engaging performances with the unmistakable patina of the embryonic Motown sound. While their technical proficiency is stunning, Brooks' rhythms never lose sight of the almighty groove, and for its hard bop stridency, the record has the proverbial good beat and you can dance to it."

The Remarkable Carmell Jones
LP | 1961 | EU | Reissue (Jazz Workshop)
23,99 €*
Release:1961 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
"Of the few records that trumpeter Carmell Jones led throughout his career, his first date was by far his best known and was generally his most satisfying. Teamed in Los Angeles with tenor saxophonist Harold Land, pianist Frank Strazzeri, bassist Gary Peacock, and drummer Leon Pettis, Jones is featured on music that is essentially cool-toned hard bop. In addition to a couple of Jones' originals, there is an obscurity by bassist Jimmy Bond and three other tunes, including an 11-minute investigation of Duke Ellington's "I'm Gonna Go Fishing." Jones' Clifford Brown-influenced style blends well with Land, and the music swings throughout in fine fashion." Scott Yanow -All Music Guide

LP | 1960 | EU | Reissue (Jazz Workshop)
23,99 €*
Release:1960 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
"Due to his decision to settle in Los Angeles, tenor saxophonist Harold Land has long been underrated. A strong bop stylist who later on would be influenced a great deal by John Coltrane, Land in 1959 had a sound closer to Sonny Rollins. For this excellent straight-ahead quintet set with trumpeter Dupree Bolton and pianist Elmo Hope, Land performs four of Hope's superior but little-known compositions along with two of his own. This is high-quality hard bop, easily recommended to fans of straight-ahead jazz." Scott Yanow -All Music Guide

LP | 1960 | EU | Reissue (Jazz Workshop)
23,99 €*
Release:1960 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
"Tenor saxophonist Harold Land and trumpeter Kenny Dorham make for a potent front line on this session, a superior hard bop set. With an obscure and quietly boppish rhythm section (pianist Amos Trice, bassist Clarence Jones, and drummer Joe Peters) giving suitable backup, Land and Dorham stretch out on five selections, most notably Cole Porter's "So in Love," "On a Little Street in Singapore," and Land's "O.K. Blues," which was dedicated to producer Orrin Keepnews. A fine effort that serves as a strong example of Harold Land's early work." Scott Yanow -All Music Guide

LP | 1961 | EU | Reissue (Jazz Workshop)
23,99 €*
Release:1961 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
"This fine set matches together the already distinctive tenor of Clifford Jordan with veteran trumpeter Kenny Dorham, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Wilbur Ware and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath. Other than Duke Ellington's "Don't You Know I Care," the group sticks to originals by Jordan, Dorham and Walton. The music is straight-ahead, and although the tunes are pretty obscure, the solos and high musicianship uplift the music. Recommended to straight-ahead jazz collectors." Scott Yanow -All Music Guide
