Magic Sword
Endless Empress Blue Vinyl Edition
LP | 2020 | US | Original (Joyful Noise)
24,99 €*
Release:2020 / US – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Recommended If You Like: Nightfist, DragonForce, S U R V I V E, Tangerine Dream, John Carpenter, Daft Punk & The vast world of Marvel. Magic Sword is an ageless tale of good and evil, told through an ever-expanding graphic novel story and accompanying synth-heavy soundtrack albums. With the two mediums intertwined from it's conception, together they are an epic experience for those bold enough to bear witness and come away with a deeper understanding of the ultimate hero's journey. Armed with a musical and visual aesthetic that has it's roots unabashedly buried deep in the golden era of 70s and 80s fantasy and sci-fi, its followers are called to another plane of existence where the struggle between light and shadow become all too real. Endless is the third and final chapter in the tale of the search for the Chosen One. This prophesied being contains the ability to wield the power of the Magic Sword and seal the prison that holds the Dark One for all eternity. Only then will The Keeper, The Seer, and The Weaver be able to rest. Until the Chosen One reveals themself, the search continues in this realm and in many others. In what form will the Magic Sword manifest? A tale of high adventure as old as time itself. The Immortals give a direct account of their vision: "Ages ago, the immortal Dark One was freed from his cell. Since that time, the forces of good have been searching for the Light, the Chosen One, to force him back into his eternal prison. The key to unlock this cell is the Magic Sword. When wielded by the Chosen One, it has the power to return balance to the Universe." The Keeper of the Magic Sword is an ancient soul who searches endlessly for the Chosen One. With the help of other immortals, The Seer and The Weaver, they are ever trying to stem the tide of the Great Shadow from engulfing all life. When the need is great, they appear with the Magic Sword and a high stakes proposition for those who are pure of heart, perpetually hoping that their search is finally over.

Tropical Fuck Storm were formed around 2017 in the city of Melbourne, Victoria along Australia's south-eastern coast. The band released their debut long-player A Laughing Death in Meatspace on Joyful Noise Recordings in 2018. Each of the band's four members bring considerable experience to the group. Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin were part of the long-running and critically-acclaimed act The Drones, while Erica Dunn and Lauren Hammel have performed in a variety of well-received projects. "Everything we do, we try to do it in a weird way. The whole album is full of weird beats, and just weird shit everywhere," Liddiard explains. He cites Doc at the Radar Station-era Captain Beefheart as a key sonic touchstone, and Braindrops certainly shares the Captain's penchant for pounding abstract grooves. Tropical Fuck Storm have achieved a uniquely off-kilter sound on Braindrops. Liddiard partly credits this to the group's use of unconventional equipment, "We use lots of techno gear to make rock and roll because rock and roll gear is boring, and all sounds like Led Zeppelin."

The phantasmagorical debut album by Tropical Fuck Storm, A Laughing Death in Meatspace , delivers a fraught vision of algorhythmic apocalypse. Featuring Gareth
Liddiard and Fiona Kitchin from Australian heroes The Drones, Tropical Fuck Storm is an endofdays consciousnessstream across nine seething tracks. The debut divebombs into the realms of mortality and immortality, moralizing and amorality? the passing of time, and how little we have left. These are lurid songs, urgently told through Gareth Liddiard's barbed and byzantine lyricism, abrasive guitar slashes, drum adrenalin, raunchy bass and electronic undercurrents. They're raging,
rapscallion, and funny, lyrically delving into everything from internet shaming to the kuru "laughing death" disease of the PNG highlands to Russian chess great Gary Kasparov's portentous loss to an IBM computer. Live, Tropical Fuck Storm are a force of nature, conjuring chaos at every blistering performance, with zero shits to give for corp orate music hegemony. "Kneel down by the advertising, don't you
make a single false move" calls out the female chorus of Fiona Kitschin and Erica Dunn echoing the dismay of our time as we bear witness to the sinister seductions which social media surveillance has entangled us. A Laughing Death in Meatspace doesn't show us the way out of this situation, but it howls along with us as we peer into the maelstrom ahead.

"I'll go unknown by torpedo or Crohn's / Only those evil live to see their own likeness in stone." It's the kind of couplet you'd carve into a wall whilst savoring the irony at hand, but when Yoni Wolf spit the line ten years ago he was blissfully, broodily unaware that he and his band WHY? were creating a career-defining album—one so fan-adored that it would go out of print, and so influential that the art-pop heroine Lorde herself would lovingly steal the very lyric quoted above. When it dropped in 2008, Alopecia not only marked WHY?'s evolution from a sonically collaged mostly solo project to a live-recorded powerhouse band of badass multi-instrumentalists. It also minted a genre of one: wryly written, poignantly posed, simultaneously swaggering and heart-rending song-rap that jangles like folk, bursts like psych-rock, and sways like chamber pop. To this day, there is no other group in the known universe that sounds or feels like WHY? does on Alopecia. The album's 2018 reissue cheekily etches that aural likeness into our musical history.

Over their 20-odd year discography, Joan of Arc's astute, endlessly probing musical
experimentation has been chorused by a barrage of voices, mostly from the singular
larynx of mainstay Tim Kinsella. Richard Brautigan, Mark Twain, Elizabeth Taylor, and
Assata Shakur might visit his lyrics, but it's the band itself that contains multitudes.
Ever since Joan of Arc's most recent lineup_ Kinsella, Theo Katsaounis, Melina
Ausikaitis, Bobby Burg, and Jeremy Boyle_began playing shows together in 2015, fans
have witnessed an even more radical democracy at work. Live, old jams and new
tracks have often melted and mutated, members jumping from instrument to
instrument in between or in the middle of songs, all stasis discarded. And now, a
series of nearly a cappella performances from Kinsella's fellow vocalist Melina
Ausikaitis, debuted live by Joan of Arc over the last several years, has become the
backbone of their new LP, 1984. Thoroughly of the band's lineage, Ausikaitis' lyrics
are equally measured with wit, despair and stubborn perseverance. Like the album's
striking hand drawn cover art, the music inside is often spare; anthemic highs ring
from elegiac lows and back again. At times, Ausikaitis sings in an earnestly tangy and
lovely flat twang redolent of the midwest, before screwing her voice up into a
fearsome roar. Sometimes her voice is electronically distorted, like bells in the sky,
into ringing eternity. Remarkably, so much of the cluttered sound of earlier Joan of
Arc LPs has largely fallen away on 1984, as has Kinsella's voice. At first it's genuinely
shocking. But the songs here are a revelation, as profound and plainspoken as
parables.

“Lighght” takes its title from the one-word poem by minimalist poet Aram Saroyan. As Kishi Bashi explains, “The poem’s blatant assault on literary convention and classical form was attractive to me.” It is apparent that such an approach informed the new album, which has both broadened and redefined his classical foundations. “Though I have studied classical composition, I prefer to take an unconventional path when it comes to creating and thinking about music,” says Kishi Bashi. Though violin remains his primary instrument and songwriting muse, Kishi Bashi has expanded his palette to include more diverse and nuanced instrumentation. Bright and soaring avant-pop songs are prevalent, as are Eastern-tinged arrangements, gentle ballads, Philip Glass inspired improvisations, and more than a few moments that flirt with 70s prog (in the tradition of ELO or Yes). If this sounds jarringly kaleidoscopic, that’s because it is. But it works. Listen and see.

Yoni Wolf has spent the last two decades traveling the remote sonic terrain where underground hip hop, avant-pop, and psych-rock meet. Some of Yoni’s most compelling and critically-praised musical experiments have been issued under the moniker WHY? and his latest entry is no exception. On AOKOHIO Yoni condenses the essential elements of WHY? into a stunningly potent musical vision.

AOKOHIO finds Yoni rethinking fundamental aspects of his approach to creating and delivering his music. The album is presented as six movements comprised of two to four songs each, with some segments appearing as brief fragments that dissolve within seconds. The concept of sharing AOKOHIO in segments over time has been preserved with the release of an accompanying visual album. “I think it's a very artful way of putting the music out there,” Yoni explains. "In terms of what it is, it's a piece of art. I put blood, sweat, and tears into this album, and struggled through the creative process as I always do. As far as where this sits with the rest of my albums? I can't answer that. I just know that my career is a lifelong career, and I’m working it. Every time it feels right, it makes me feel good.”

Imagine all this happened simply because of the language you speak, the shade of your skin, or the roots of your family tree. For over 120,000 Japanese Americans this was a reality during World War II. It's a reality that Kishi Bashi seeks to reckon with on his latest release Omoiyari. Omoiyari is Kishi Bashi's fourth album - following the acclaimed 151a (2012), Lighght (2014), and Sonderlust (2016), which have garnered serious acclaim from outlets including NPR Music, The Wall Street Journal, and The Guardian - and his most important yet. Many of the songs were initially inspired by history and oppression, and he deftly weaves tales of love, loss, and wanting to connect listeners to the past. Anal Trump come from a rich tradition of politically-motivated extreme music. Grindcore's origins date back to Margaret Thatcher's Britain, when a collective of
teenage anarcho-punks decided to call themselves Napalm Death and throw thrash metal and hardcore punk in a blender set to "loudest" and "fastest." The First 100 Songs pays tribute to classic AxCx album titles like The 110 Song CD and 5643 Song EP. Rob feels their appeal lies in that gray area. "They took hate so far beyond everything that all
meaning seemed to invert at some point and back again so often that it became impossible to take seriously." Whatever the intent, they succeeded in horrifying parents everywhere. Anal Trump have one distinct advantage over Seth Putnam's trailblazing act: whereas Putnam and his collaborators had to come up with their own sleazy subject
matter, Rob and Travis have a ready-made supply of parent-offending quotes straight from the Oval Office. Produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by Rob Trump, The First 100 Songs boasts a hundred songs in eleven minutes -- their entire recorded output to date. With songs based on actual quotes by the man ("I Like The Soldiers Who DON'T Get Captured") to creative interpretations ("My Cabinet Is Nuanced As Shit") to Putnam-esque bon mots ("Renewable Resources Are Gay"), there's a smorgasbord of Trumpiliciousness!

Occasional Din is a sunny shoebox diorama for the eternal pessimist. Over the past decade,
songs by Chicago artist J Fernandez have appeared like unexpected gifts, each time invoking a holiday we didn't realize existed. Like all good holidays, his songs are imbued with a mythical energy, full of curious moods, charmed settings and the timelessness of a familiar moment. J Fernandez started as the eponymous home recording project of Arkansas born Justin
Fernandez, who came to Chicago in 2008. After three EPs, his 2015 debut LP, Many Levels of
Laughter, attracted high praise from the music press - including 8/10s from Uncut and
NME, plus end of year nods from Under The Radar and Brooklyn Vegan, who called it "one of
2015's most underrated albums". That year also saw him share the stage with the likes of
Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Alvvays, Mitski, and Ezra Furman.

Yellow vinyl! The most apt description of Daniel Smith's sojourn as a musician would
be written in iambic pentameter, because this sojourn is as immemorial as The
Pilgrim's Progress, or Paradise Regained, the son raised in a proper spiritual and
musical household, who casts it all off, goes out and listens to a bunch of Syd Barrett
and Don Van Vliet and similarly admirable material, is recast in the image of this highly
original music, and who then returns to the fold, like in the parables. Nearer to the
home fires, he is repurposed and begins to hear the profundity in the familial gospel
sound, whereupon he conceives of this band, to be made up of his siblings and friends,
which will reproduce this very sound of family, and his band records several albums of
truly unique contemporary music, more punk than punk, more psychedelic than
psychedelia, and more ecstatic and divinely inspired than a lot of the slick gospel
music; he thus falls somewhere between the cracks, like a lot of truly revolutionary
American composers, like Charles Ives, like Moondog, like Harry Partch, like Meredith
Monk, like Sun Ra. From this singular perch, Smith composes some of the most
original music of the nineties and oughts, with his siblings by his side, often wearing
inventive homemade costumes spun from the metaphors of the Daniel Smith
cosmogony.

lo-fi sound loops on flexible LP sized discs, each disc containing optically encoded
rhythm section grooves in a particular style of music (i.e. country, bossanova),
along with drum loops and keyboard tones. Think of it as the 1970's version of
GarageBand, where amateur artists could put together their own songs using loops
of recordings by professional musicians. Optiganally Yours started in the mid
1990's when Pea Hix became obsessed with the magnificent Optigan. When Pea
had the idea to start a band around these haunting sounds, his roommate Rob
Crow chimed in and said "I'll be the singer, and the band will be called Optiganally
Yours." After releasing two albums 1997's Spotlight On Optiganally Yours followed
by Exclusively Talentmaker in 2000 Pea rescued the Optigan's original studio
master tapes from a SoCal garage, and set out to assemble basic tracks from the
thousands of loops and sam ples the tapes contained. Thus work began on a third
album, O.Y. in HiFi. "Several of these sessions never became discs, so Pea chopped
them up, as you would with a real Optigan," says Crow. "And we wrote all these
new songs using these materials, in addition to my guitar and voice of course. I
think it's the best record I've ever done."

Don't be afraid of the rhythm. Lose yourself to the power of Perfecto. Just feel the
groove, close your eyes, and shake your hips. It's a dance revolution. The path to selfdiscovery
lies on the dance floor. Setting it off are your party-starters, Kenny Dennis
(The KDz) and Ders. Chromatic funk comes courtesy of producer, DJ Rafal (AKA
Larold Stevens). This is the hip-house crew that took the mid-western mall circuit by
storm. You learned about their rise on the Kenny Dennis LP III record; now you can
hear them shining like a Mercedes. If none of this makes any sense, let's take a step
back. Perfecto is the latest and final odyssey in the life of Kenny Dennis, the absurd and
oddly poignant fictional alter ego, blue collar hero of modernity, rib tips connoisseur,
mustached rapper and softball titan. It all fits into the bleak funhouse saga of Serengeti.
Sometimes, the critically revered Chicagoan collaborated with Yoni Wolf (WHY?) or
Sufjan Stevens. Sometimes, he works with Open Mike Eagle or Odd Nosdam. Over the
final chapters of the Kenny Dennis chronicles, his co-pilot isAnders Holm ("Ders") of
Workaholics. For most of Kenny Dennis' career, the KDz gravitated to raw boom-bap
reminiscent of his early days in the Grimm Teachaz_the 90s rap group once signed to
Jive, who beefed with Shaq and never got their fair share of fame. In his latest scheme
to blow up, Kenny embraces early 90s neon, glossy beats, house vocals, and bass to the
face. Ders goes along because Perfecto is a formidable team. These are synth dance
anthems, house vamps, wavy rhythms, raps that would make Chill Rob G have to chill.
But there's also a powerful message. Perfecto is about equality for human kind, because
when we dance we're color blind. This is about having faith for the dance floor. Tonight
could be the night. They're here to sing the body electric and make you sweat. Have a
ball like a masquerade

Mind the Drift is the third studio album by American heavy metal band Big
Business. At the time of the 2009 Mind the Drift release, producer/engineer
extraordinaire Toshi Kasai (Willie Nelson, Foo Fighters) had been playing guitar
with Big Business for a while. And in the months before the record was made,
Jared and Coady had been touring pretty heavily with the Melvins. "I think we
wanted to elevate the songs and make it really grand, like a Queen record," says
Coady. "It's definitely the hardest record we've made to this day."

2003 in Seattle, Washington. Their first full length album
(Head For The Shallow ) was released in 2005, followed by Here Come the
Waterworks in 2007, once again recorded with Phil Ek at AVAST! Studios in
Seattle. David Scott Stone was along to play guitar. Of the LP, Coady says, "I think
we made a good record, the songs were starting to get a little more ambitious."

Equal parts producer and composer, Son Lux (aka Ryan Lott) bridges an unusual gap between old-world music discipline and next-level experimentation. Meditative but heaving with energy, Lanterns finds a peculiar congruency between futuristic soul and ancient sentiment. Driving orchestral pop (Lost It To Trying, No Crimes) is placed alongside haunting minimalism (Pyre, Enough Of Our Machines), often starkly juxtaposing densely layered arrangements with Lott's intimate voice.
