The Make-Up flood Dub Narcotic studio with their tightened-up sound. Joined sporadically by members of the Dub Narcotic Sound System, they are doing a soul rockin' that has no territorial boundaries. Turn on to the idea of Sound Verite and understand that the struggle of culture vs. Make-Up is the struggle vs. Destiny, the struggle to stop history itself. The album's cover appears to be an homage to the cover of Love's Forever Changes, a band which The Make-Up were often compared to.

Like a hall of mirrors, but instead of seeing yourself everywhere you look, it's Roy Orbison, then it's Les Paul & Mary Ford in the fogged glass-ghosts in the mixing board, all old & full of hiss, rattled loose & flying around.

LP | 1993 | UK | Reissue (K Records)

Release:1993 / UK – Reissue
Genre:Rock / Indie
Besides their albums, Mecca Normal released a variety of singles in its first few years, not to mention contributing to a wide variety of contributions. Jarred Up brings together twenty-two otherwise unavailable songs recorded between 1987 and 1993, making for a great collection and a handy starting point for any newcomer to the band. Many of Mecca Normal's highlights didn't appear on the album, so in lieu of a ‘greatest hits' compilation, this readily does the business. What's especially neat is hearing the occasional experiments and different approaches that also crop up. One of the first songs is "Man Thinks Woman," which besides being one of Smith's sharper analyses regarding gender relations and roles (the midsong spoken word break is both funny and pointed) is notable for featuring Lester on acoustic guitars rather than his standard electric. After that initial surprise, further examples appear: the folk/country hybrid "He Didn't Say" (with Smith on slightly ghostly, reverb-heavy vocals), backwards cymbals and other quasi-psychedelic turns at various points.

Recorded at K's own Dub Narcotic Studios, The Shivas' fourth LP will have you on your feet. With all of the fierce energy and body shakin' that The Shivas are known for, You Know What To Do (KLP252) encapsulates that, and much more.Recorded and mixed on tape by Calvin Johnson, it is an apt follow-up to Whiteout (KLP242), and features the title track of The Shivas "You Make Me Wanna Die" 7" EP (IPU143) released last April.Amongst the 13 tracks of the album, you can glance the many faces of the The Shivas' musical style. From the blistering heat of tracks like "Old Lightning Rod" to the cool groove of "Ride On", the record also touches down into the slower tempos on tracks such as the deeply psychedelic "Let It Happen To You".This is The Shivas record we have all been waiting for, so don't hesitate, you know what to do.
