Midori Takada & Lafawndah - Le Renard Bleu Etched Single Sided Edition

Le Renard Bleu Etched Single Sided Edition
LP | 2018 | EU | Original (!K7)

Release:2018 / EU – Original
Genre:Organic Grooves
It is said that every generation casts its mind back to a previous era in times of crisis; the resources that will allow us to decode the questions of our moment may lie in the myths of another era. Le Renard Bleu, the new musical and cinematic collaboration between Lafawndah and composer Midori Takada, and filmmakers Partel Oliva, takes a cross- generational echo as ground zero for recovering a crucial myth for uncertain times: the blue fox. As transmitted by Takada, the fox appears in both ancient Senegalese and Japanese folktales as the trickster archetype; belonging both to the heavens and to the earth, the fox is the agent of chaotic good, shaking the world up when its energy has become stagnant. Above all else, the fox is famous for its cunning nature. Renard Bleu marks the first new music released by Takada in nearly twenty years; it would be difficult to overstate the importance of her return to the public eye. Her first solo record, 1983's Through the Looking Glass, has been rediscovered and heralded as a lost classic; the influence of her percussion trio, the Mkwaju Ensemble, continues to permeate and inspire a new generation entranced by its lucid beauty, playfulness, and sensual patience. Takada has performed in numerous film score orchestras, including the ensemble for Akira Kurasawa’s Dreams, coincidentally a key influence on Renard Bleu.

In March of 2017, the Israeli duo touched down in Africa for the first time, and set up camp in both Ethiopia and Ivory Coast, yielding In Africa, a triple header EP which features three slices of contemporary body music, with both East and West African musical motifs. The project will always present a musical release, on vinyl and digital, that was created on the trip, accompanied with a documentary, showing the whole journey.

The slo-beat pioneers Kruder & Dorfmeister of Vienna are among the hottest producers in the dance universe. Even though they only produced two unreleased maxis, big names like Count Basie, Bomb The Bass, Alex Reece or United Future Organization had some of their tracks remixed by these exceptional producers. Their productions on compilations of Ninja Tune, SSR and Wall Of Sound are considered mile stones regarding the trip-hop genre and many major companies are trying to release their debut album.Since 1993 the two smart Austrians Peter Kruder & Richard Dorfmeister have been working together as a team and when being asked about their musical roots they name musicians like Miles Davis, Sly Stone, Brian Eno, Serge Gainsbourg or Bill Laswell. Besides this they are great admirers of the Gilles Peterson and Coldcut Radioshow of London’s cult-station Kiss FM, which had a lot of influence on their musical openmindness. Their label G-Stone was able to gain outstanding reputation with its four releases and earned fantastic media reaction in international publications.Besides their outstanding fame as producers both were able to blast even the hippest clubs on this planet with their extravagant DJ-sets. Their breathtaking mixture of trip-hop, dub, ambient and drum’n’bass is supposed to be way-leading thus supporting their cult-status. Smokin’ tracks of Herbalizer, Statik Sound System, Hardfloor, Aquasky, Shantel and others are combined on their DJ-Kicks set, gathering the hottest labels from Ninja to Cheap, from Moving Shadow to Creative Wax. A dub producer helped to remix the entire material making it a thrilling clubsoundtrack for the 90s. By the way, during the work for DJ-Kicks and their debut album they refused doing remixes for U2, Grace Jones, Elvis Costello and the Fantastic Four!

Kerri Chandler is house music royalty, and he is next to take the reins of the ever essential DJ-kicks mix series. His sumptuous selection is out on October 20th and arrives with a substantial release tour that includes a launch party at this year's ADE. Without New Jersey native Kerri 'Kaoz' Chandler, house—specifically deep house—would sound very different. Ever since his teens he has been making and playing music with a unique sense of soul, jazz and deepness. From majors like Atlantic, King Street Sounds and Nervous via his own Madhouse, his releases are never short of genre-defining classics that have spawned a thousand copycats. Affectionately referred to as the Stevie Wonder of house, Kerri's DJ sets take him all over the world and often find him playing live keys next to his informed selections. He's meticulous about sound, too, which means that no-ones kicks hit quite like Kerri's.His instantly classic and timeless DJ-kicks mix, though, takes him out of the club and through a world of influences and inspirations. It's like me taking you for a walk in New York,' he says. Like a music tour guide, we go through Brooklyn, Soho, midtown, the Bronx and Uptown, and parts of New Jersey.'The resulting selection is an unhurried and very personal mixtape with blends, fades and cuts all allowing the music to do the talking. At various points throughout, we hear Kerri speaking into the mic, and that only adds to the feeling that you are sat in his living room as he pulls out all his favourite cuts. He also lays down some of his magical keys at various points, lending yet more personality to the mix.

Mount Kimbie take the reigns of the DJ-kicks series with a 23 track mix thatincludes one of their own new exclusives. Due for release on 28th September,it’s a snapshot of exactly what the UK duo sound like in the club rightnow and is accompanied by a DJ-kicks tour that takes the pair to DJ andlive dates all round the world.2018 marks a decade since Kai Campos and Dominic Maker first hookedup and started making music. In the early years they refashioned dubstepinto innovative new forms that drew on ambient, garage and electronica. After a critically acclaimed debut album on Hotflush, they signed to WarpRecords and have consolidated their position at the forefront of the internationalelectronic scene with two critically acclaimed albums and countlessworld live tours. This is a mix inspired by a mini-run of DJ gigs that Mount Kimbie played withActress. “It was an interesting and challenging experience, and I learnt a loton the six dates we did,” says Kai, who explains that plenty of the tracks hewas playing during those gigs make it into the mix. They make it a forwardlooking affair that calls on music the band have discovered recently; musicthey have found inspiring. Their own ‘DJ-kicks’ track was made specially forthe mix and was initially influenced by Stanislav Tolkachev and AlexisPerala, who are both also included. Rather than a painstaking plan ormeticulous studio approach, this session captures the improvised energy ofa real DJ mix, but one where each track is given time to breath and make animpact rather than one where DJ trickery is at the fore. The result is a succinct 50 minutes that often goes deep, with roughhewndrums and grainy atmospheres from the likes of Terrence Dixon, SeveredHeads, Marco Bernardi and Object Blue. It perfectly knits together strippedback rhythms, percussive tracks and more harmonic techno whileseamlessly joining the dots between the old and the new. It’s a wellbalanced mix that stays low and heady, and that sense of focussed tensionis what makes it so utterly compelling throughout.

The first chapter of Armand Jakobsson’s musical career has been nothing short of remarkable. After establishing himself with rough but emotive house as Rimbaudian and jungle as Birds of Sweden, he unveiled his DJ Seinfeld alias to the world, first with underground hit single ‘U’, then with his Time Spent Away From U album on Lobster Fury in November 2017. It was a post break-up love letter to the dance floor with heart-on-sleeve emotions colouring the dusty and analogue house grooves. Acclaim came in from far and wide, with everyone from Rolling Stone to Pitchfork fawning over its heart swelling nostalgia and melancholic immediacy. Jakobsson approached his DJ-Kicks with the intention of representing all the things that made him fall in love with dance music more than a decade ago, as well as showing some of the progression that has occurred in that time and “reflecting the simultaneous fear of leaving something safe behind as well as the excitement of venturing into unknown territories, musically and emotionally.” In order to make it as personal as possible, he called upon the many talented people around him making music. They returned with an enthusiasm that reminded Jakobsson of his own early passion, and in turn invigorated him and the whole process of assembling the mix. It was finally recorded at Inkonst club in Malmo because, recently back from years in Barcelona, he has not yet set up a studio in his hometown. DJ Seinfeld’s DJ-Kicks is not only a testament of his characterful DJ skills, but also a complete artistic statement that showcases his unique vision of dance music.

The DJ-Kicks series was born in Berlin in 1995, the first officially licensed DJ mix series available commercially. Over the past 20 years, the series has maintained a steady finger on the pulse of electronic music, earning a reputation as an essential barometer for what’s happening right now in the world of dance music. To celebrate the 50th entry in the series, we’ve brought the series back to Germany with a very special mix from the iconoclastic DJ Koze.Characteristically refusing to hew to any particular genre or style, Koze’s mix nonetheless creates a uniform color, incorporating underground hip-hop, melodic techno, indie pop, and vintage songwriting for a selection of tracks that is at once nostalgic and futuristic, melancholy and joyful. In order to incorporate a variety of styles, Koze created a number of custom edits and blends for the set. He also takes a novel approach to the concept of a “mix,” often eschewing long overlays in favor of serendipitous juxtapositions. “During the day I don’t have the requirement of hearing anything mixed in strict time,” he says. “Instead I focus on harmoniousness. The idea is more to create the appearance of a radio show, in the vein of John Peel for example. There is a giant cosmos of music running through my filter.”DJ-Kicks also includes a new DJ Koze original, in the form of the dilla-esque “I Have Not Been Everywhere But It’s On My List.” With its fragile soul samples, pinched, anxious-expressive vocal snippets, and sweet guitar riffs, the track sets a luxurious tone for the mix. The mood is gentle, laid back, extremely open and willingly to take risks.Special white vinyl

The release will be Danilo Plessow's first official mix CD. Known for his bass-heavy, soul-inspired sound, the Stuttgart-based artist put out a string of records between 2007 and 2009 that made him a favorite among DJs and house music fans, most notably the Raw Cuts 12-inch series. The mix looks to be a particularly diverse affair, with plenty of nods to Plessow's influences, starting off with experimental jazz gods Sun Ra and moving through selections from Aphex Twin, Rhythm & Sound, Tony Allen and Loose Joints. Classic house fare comes in the form of Mr. Fingers and Recloose, While Fred P (AKA Black Jazz Consortium) brings the ethereal touch with "On This Vibe." An exclusive Motor City Drum Ensemble track is included as well, entitled "L.O.V.E."

Following on from his intimate entry into the DJ-kicks mix series, Lone is putting out a vinyl only EP of all the unreleased tracks from it. The horizontal mix tapped into all of Lone's influences, from hip-hop to house, IDM to techno. It also showcased some producers signed to his own Magic Wire label, and of course the back bone was built from some of the Nottingham man's freshest new productions. They come after celebrated releases on Werk Discs, R&S and Dekmantel, and include dance floor aligned EPs and more rounded full lengths designed for close listening. Here he sits in between the two across three thrilling cuts. Opener ‘Saturday Night' is a breezy bit of deep house with crisp boom-baps and swirling pads that lend it a dreamy, ethereal feel. Spoken word snippets are stitched into the groove and the whole thing is as frictionless and feel good as house comes. Next up, ‘Arc' is a little more direct, with scattered snares flapping over dry wooden kicks. It's a punchy bit of house latest DJ-kicks mix star Kerri Chandler would be proud, and comes overlaid with spring time flutes and luscious pads as a classically inclined bassline powers things along. Last but not least is ‘Alpha Wheel 4′ (Ambient Mix), a kaleidoscopic passage of suspensory sound scuffed up glassy surfaces trapping you in rays of refracted light from start to finish. All three tracks exhibit Lone's authentic, lived in and lo-fi aesthetic, and as a result slip perfectly into his ever more essential discography.

Marcel Dettmann has mixed the latest edition of the highly respected DJ-Kicks compilation series. Whilst Dettmann is well-known for his incendiary sets at his residency at Berghain, his DJ-Kicks mix is crafted for listening, and displays a more reflective side of the DJ and producer. The mix explores a wide array of selections from various subgenres; ranging from the a new vocal-led Strictly Rhythm release, to rapping on Clarence G’s 1991 release ‘Cause I Said It Right’, recently reissued by Clone Records.Over the course of its 1hr 14 duration, Dettmann reveals multiple new original productions; most notably a collaboration with Levon Vincent, ‘Can You See It’. The pair have collaborated once in the past, releasing ‘Vengeance’ on Levon’s own Novel Sound label towards the end of 2015 to critical acclaim. ‘Can You See It’ sees the duo venture into darker territory; a stripped back, sub-bass laden affair, the quality of this production immediately stands out in the early stages of the mix. Dettmann also collaborates with MDR affiliate Wincent Kunth on ’Possible Step’. In addition to five brand new original Dettmann remixes and edits, there’s an unreleased remix of Marcel’s ‘Let’s Do It’ from Ostgut Ton labelmate Rolando. Designed to be enjoyed by both the critics and more casual listeners, this mix is the latest in a long series of lifetime achievements over the course of Dettmann’s career – and with so many new unreleased original Marcel Dettmann productions included, this is a landmark release for the producer.

Sometimes magic happens. Sometimes, emotions enwrapyou in a way you’ve rarely experienced before. Sometimes,it’s just a matter of freedom: the freedom to create, improvise, process, and re-process, without specific references, deadlines,or obligations to please whatever markets or audienceswith clear-cut styles and sound signatures.Actually, this Tomat Petrella affair is quite unexpected. It’s agame of two: Turin-based Davide Tomat, who has over twentyyears experience as a multi-instrumentalist, band leader, andsound designer in several Italian projects (Niagara,N.A.M.B., and founder of the Superbudda collective); andmusician Gianluca Petrella, hailing from southern Italy but infact a citizen of the world and - more importantly - one of themost revered and inventive jazz trombone players in theworld from the last decade or so (as stated on several DownBeat Critics’ Polls and proven on his Blue Note and ECMreleases).“Kepler”, their collaborative effort, is a beast of a differentnature. It has so many textures, intuitions, and complexitiesthat you can hardly list this simply as a “jazz-meetselectronica”project.So much cheesy, well-educated, nicely predictable musichas been produced under that moniker, but so far none ofthem have had “it”.

!K7 are pleased to announce Forest Swords as the next curator of the everessential DJ-Kicks series. Following acclaimed albums on Ninja Tune andTri Angle, soundtrack and installation work, and remixes of the likes ofBjork, Matthew Barnes aka Forest Swords has curated a 25-track compilationthat draws a line between past inspirations and his current peers."During all of the nights that shaped me as a music fan there wasn't reallya focus on DJing etiquette; sticking to genres, perfect transitions – it wasall pretty DIY and purely like having someone cook up their personalmixtape in front of you, to surprise you and to explore different sounds"says Barnes. "That kind of rough-around-the-edges approach is so muchmore exciting to me than something sterile and seamless and I wanted tocarry that spirit into this compilation."Chosen over the course of a few weeks in winter 2018, the mixed versionwas cut on Barnes' laptop during a wintery cross-country train journey.Like much of his own output, his DJ-Kicks skirts around pristine electronicsand embraces more organic textures: 80s post punk (Anna Domino,Dead Can Dance), classic 90s British electronica (Orbital, Mira Calix), andsmokey digi-dub (Rhythm & Sound), all rub up alongside some of themost forward-facing producers working today (Demdike Stare, LaurelHalo, Fis). The compilation sifts through rhythms, shifting speeds and emotions: frompop icon Neneh Cherry's primal thudding to the zombified throb ofexclusive Forest Swords track 'Crow' via Deena Abdelwaheed's clatteringdeconstructions to the euphoric two-step of Djrum. It's a collection oftracks that feels as restlessly curious and weighty as Barnes' own work.

Credited by many as one of the leading tastemakers in dance music, his DJ sets have influenced a generation (or two) of musicians and fans out there today. An artist that has never allowed time or age to slow him down – Michael Mayer remains tirelessly motivated behind the DJ decks, in the studio or behind his desk at Kompakt, the company he co-owns. Last year’s full-length LP, ‘&’, was Michael’s fourth, a departure that saw him extensively collaborate with an impressive host of contemporaries and friends, including Joe Goddard, Prins Thomas and Agoria. Complimenting these excursions perfectly, Michael’s long overdue contribution to the legendary DJ Kicks series finds the Cologne artist in just as generous of a mood, only rooted in his ever-expanding record collection, and above all, his defining instinct to share the beauty of music with others. “On an abstract level, the approach was basically the same for both projects”, observes Mayer. “For & I put together a group of people that are close to my heart. For Kicks it was a group of records that are like friends to me. All of the tracks I used went through heaven and hell with me. They've become true companions. Circling in on and bringing together these friends was the only criterion for the making of this mix. I wanted itto be as personal as possible.”Perhaps unnervingly to some, fifteen years have passed since the debut edition to Mayer’s breathtaking, scene defining mix trilogy, Immer. Not that it’s legacy - Resident Advisor’s #1 Mix of the 00s, one of Rolling Stone’s 30 Greatest EDM Albums Of All Time - has disturbed Mayer’s formidable workload. A catalogue of no less than 23 EPs, 4 albums and 170 remixes informs a near constant level of international touring. Exhausting as this can be, even after all these years, it’s a ritual that informs the delicateconstruction of Mayer’s contribution to the DJ Kicks series.

Genre:Electronic / Dance
Matthew Dear is a man of many musical hats. A co-founder of the revered Ghostly International and Spectral Sound labels, Dear has a wide reaching discography under a number of aliases, including face melting techno as Jabberjaw, dark avant-pop under his own name and intricate minimal as Audion (whose Alpha LP was released on !K7 earlier this year). Now more than 15 years, five albums and 20 EPs into his esteemed career, Dear is exactly the sort of fascinating character that makes the very personal DJ-Kicks series so special. DJ-Kicks is Dear's first work under his own name in some time. The mix proves that he is a master of subversion; someone who can head down a brain frying techno warren then effortlessly onto raw machine grooves via left-of-centre synth ditties and kaleidoscopic house music. DJ-Kicks also includes three exclusive new tracks; two as Audion, and one Matthew Dear original.

It's been a big year for the acclaimed !K7 series, following entries from Marcel Dettmann, Dâm-Funk, Jackmaster and Moodymann. Avery's instalment is meant to capture the moment "your watch stops ticking" in the club and you get lost in the music. Avery includes tracks from Svreca, Rrose, Iori, Post Scriptum and Planetary Assault Systems. The mix also features three new originals—an ambient cut called "Space Echo," a DJ-Kicks exclusive called "A Mechanical Sky" and a new tune from Rote, his collaboration with Volte-Face.

Alan Abrahams was written over the last two years, during the emotional break up of a relationship and the formation of a new one, and that is very much conveyed throughout. Says the man himself, “this album is also a natural progression from dance music into something akin to a mutated musical style that incorporates stuff I listen to all the time such as classical, African and new jazz.” This album is also noteworthy from the off in that it places Portable’s own vocals front and centre, as well as showcasing some very real song writing skills that makes for music that stands up to listening in many different contexts, not just the club. The album also comes with some of Abrahams’ own piano playing, as well as a number of music videos he has made himself.

Matthew Dear’s Audion project stands proudly at the intersection between art and hedonism, realised over a decade long dedication to powerful and relevant dance music. Growing out of the vibrant DIY Detroit underground, Audion and his contemporaries were free to feed off the energy reverberating from UK and European dancefloors, but singular in their desire to create their own sound and spirit. An Audion release is techno in it’s purest sense - whether it’s pushing the bombastic limits, spinning the dancefloor out of control or elegantly toying with just a few sonic elements. ‘Alpha’ is Audion’s first artist album in 10 years and comes at the end of a period of fevered activity. The collective body of work standing as a marker in time and a defining moment in the life of the artist. Drowning out the noise of the outside world, ‘Alpha’ was a puzzle pieced together sonically in the shadows and wildly brought to life in a matter of weeks. The artwork for ‘Alpha’ has again been realised by Will Calcutt, Dear’s long time collaborator, who has a visual plan for the music that matches the sonic vision, completing the final critical piece of the puzzle. Taken from the album, Gut Man Cometh and Destroyer get the remix treatment from UK producers Matthew Herbert and FOLD

Over the past decade, Seth Troxler has become a visionary and authentic voice in dance music, his jovial personality cutting through the noise and continually playing by his own rules. Growing up between Detroit and Chicago, his musical education carries enviable credentials, with his stepdad a local radio personality who championed the early sounds of house music.True to Troxler’s character, the mix has a whimsical nature and a thoughtful and timeless narrative, bearing a tenacious episode for the DJ-Kicks series that gives a true insight into the man behind the well-preened moustache and cowboy antics. “It might seem obvious but to be a successful DJ, you have to be really into music,” Troxler points out. “Collecting music is my life. This is a proper DJ mix – a house mix. It’s good music that works to listen to at any time.”“For my DJ Kicks mix I wanted to do something that was honest,” he goes on. “I went out in the morning, micro-dosed myself and did all these errands around town. Then I came home at night and did the mix one take. I wanted to curate something for people to easily listen to, that was nice, and funny and got you in the mood to do your homework, or drive that hour long trip when you need to go somewhere. I see this mix as a gay man named Rodney. Or a big black woman named Birtha.”

Scoring a top 10 hit (as Breach has this summer with “Jack”) is a dream come true for most musicians. It also must be a little bit strange though, especially for an artist with the history and depth that Breach (a/k/a Ben Westbeech) has. In fact, the Breech project was originally conceived as an underground counterpart to the Westbeech’s work under his given name. “The thing is not to lose sight of why you started making music in the first place,” he says. “I wasn’t trying to get in the Top Ten. I just care about making deep records that I get off on.”It’s those same “deep records” that are showcased on Breach’s new DJ-Kicks mix; which deftly incorporates everything from €2 basement finds (in the form of Winx – “How’s The Music”) to spanking new tracks from some of Westbeech’s contemporaries, and of course, a new original Breach track made specifically for the mix. “I’ve grown up with DJ Kicks,” Westbeech says. “For me it’s a very important series and I didn’t want to throw it together at a time when I’ve never been as busy. It came at a pretty crazy point in my life, but I feel I’ve done myself justice with it.”

To say Maya Jane Coles had a big year in 2011 would be an incredible understatement. In the space of twelve months, the 24 year old East Londoner went from a hotly tipped favorite of house music connoisseurs to, well, pretty much taking over the world. It is our extreme pleasure to announce that her first commercially available DJ mix is coming this year, in the form of a DJ-Kicks mix in April.“I wanted this mix to showcase my diversity,” she says. “I don’t just do one thing and I wanted it to reflect that. Most of the mixes I’ve put out there so far have been house-based, but I also produce stuff under the Nocturnal Sunshine moniker, which is more two-step/bass influenced stuff. This mix evolved into something that wasn’t just four-to-the-floor.”

Not for nothing was DJ Kicks once named "the most important DJ mix series ever" by dance music bible Mixmag. In the 17 years since it started in 1995 with CJ Bolland's scene-defining techno set, via landmark releases by Kruder & Dorfmeister, Smith & Mighty and Kemistry & Storm, it's established a reputation for quality, forward-thinking mixes by dance music's big names. That's a statement that holds just as true for the last five years, which has seen UK synth poppers Hot Chip, New York retro-futurists The Juan MacLean and London dubstep icon Kode 9, amongst many others, add their weight to the franchise.A big part of DJ Kicks idea is the exclusive track on each album: every artist doing DJ Kicks has to write and include a piece of music that's not available anywhere else. The second Exclusives album, follow-up to the first collection released in 2006, collates all 14 of those DJ Kicks-only moments from the last five years. The result is as wide ranging and eclectic as the series itself. Kieren 'Four Tet' Hebden turns in a stunning performance on Pockets, fusing clattering live percussion to sweeps of analogue synth and swirling electronics. My Piano sees Hot Chip on fine form, weaving the piano of the song title into one of their trademark synth pop grooves. Meanwhile The Juan MacLean conjure up a mammoth ten-minute slow-burn dancefloor bomb that starts with a bubbling Giorgio Moroder-style arpeggio and builds to a crescendo as glassy keys are piled on in multiple layers and Nancy Wang sings "You like it when it's too much". One of the strongest DJ Kicks mixes of recent times is that by London expatriate Scuba, who now lives in Berlin. His track M.A.R.S. bridges the two cities, taking the techno aesthetic of his adopted home and grafting it onto a breakbeat steeped in his dubstep roots. Then there's Triangle Folds by techno wünderkind James Holden, a mind-bending digital flight of fancy beamed in from the outer rim of human consciousness. Oh, and Photek's new exclusive track taken from his forthcoming mix, the 39th incidentally, which is due out next year. Surprisingly, perhaps, for an album compiled from sources with no connection other than DJ Kicks, which by its nature is a broad church, it hangs together satisfyingly. well. The common element? This is the sound of electronic music's great and good at their very best. It's what DJ Kicks is all about. Long may it continue.

The Apparat contribution is as stylized as the preceding mixes in the series from Kode 9 and James Holden; with Ring embracing the opportunity to create a mix that represents both his personality and his brave take on 'club' music. With an incredibly prevalent talent for manipulation of both tempos and melodies, Ring includes tracks from a handful of dubstep producers like Dutch producer Martyn - whose 'Miniluv' provides a glorious rhythmic propulsion when under-layed beneath Patrice Baumel's 'Sub' - and Ramadanman's 'Tempest' - whose melody all but dissipates at the optimum moment - layering and blending them perfectly with tracks from across an array of genres from Autechre's percussive white noise to Oval's erratically colourful sound slices or the echoed clicks of Phon.o's 'Intervall'.

Kode 9’s grasp on the throat of bass music in 2010 is almost unparalleled. His trend setting record label, Hyperdub, is in its sixth year of viral contagion; he’s become a published author on the theory of sound abuse and sonic frequencies being used as weaponry in his book ‘Sonic Warfare’ and his production work has mutated from an almost simplistic marriage of beats and sine waves into a fusion of dancefloor Ebonics and discordant synths. Becoming a figurehead of UK dance music hasn’t been a quick process, and Kode9’s single-mindedness has contributed in some way to his notoriety, but it’s simply his tireless work as a record label boss and A&R that has marked him out as one of the most powerful ears within the scene. Probably best known to the wider global audience as the label that gave birth to two genre defining albums from Burial, Hyperdub has become one of the most reliably testing labels out there. Just as likely to release a glut of two and a half minute beat sketches from American beat maker Samiyam or Zomby as sprawling house opuses from Brixton bass bin temptress Cooly G, the label is at the forefront of innovation and it’s something that he has infused into his volume of the DJ-KiCKS series. “Very simply, [the mix is] just a snapshot of my DJ sets at the first half of 2010,” he says calmly. “It’s definitely not an exploration of my musical heritage, but it’s not all new stuff. It probably signifies something about my relationship to dubstep that the mix only has a few dubstep tunes in it, and is instead a mix of UK funky, broken beat, dubstep, grime and some R&B. Unfortunately, I fear some listeners, because of my background, will think that all the tracks are just mutations of dubstep.” Starting off in serene fashion with Nottingham producer Lone’s upbeat exploration of steel drum snatches on ‘Once In A While’, Kode9 dives into the percussive textures of Dutch producer Aardvarck before steering the mix into a duo of his own productions.
