LP | 1967 | EU | Reissue (Karl)

Release:1967 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Electronic / Dance
180g vinyl.

Morton Subotnick helped bring the modular voltage-controlled synthesizer to a state of readiness for performance and recording and was the first composer to take advantage of the new instrument's potential. Composed in 1967 specifically for release on Nonesuch, Silver Apples of the Moon was Subotnick's first full-length LP of electronic music, and the album became an international sensation. Its title is taken from Yeats' "The Song of Wandering Aengus," in which Subotnick found inspiration. Structured as a series of sonic plateaus and troughs, Part A has a fascinating vocabulary of points, glissandi, spatters, hisses, whistles, and sirens, and the variety of tones and gestures sustain interest. Yet, in contrast to the first part's capricious shapes and irregular sections, Part B develops rather predictable sequences over a steady ostinato, which seems automated and uninspired when compared to the fresh ideas heard earlier. In 1968, Subotnick released The Wild Bull, a dark work that relies on deep, lowing tones, harsh attacks, and metallic sonorities to convey its tragic mood. Inspired by an ancient Sumerian poem of mourning, Subotnick gave this piece a human quality by simulating cries and mixing in the sound of breathing. The original tapes were restored and digitally mastered in 1993 for Wergo's reissue on disc.

(sumac, Split CRANIUM).Wildfires plagued Washington state during the summer of 2017, their smoke drifting westward toward the Seattle area and toxifying the air. Shortly before that trauma, Monika Khot, William Fowler Collins, Daniel Menche, Faith Coloccia, and Aaron Turner had gathered at the latter two musicians' House Of Low Culture studio on idyllic Vashon Island with revered producer Randall Dunn. There they cut eight songs that capture the makeshift band's feelings of what Coloccia calls “a kind of doomsday lurking in the background.” It's as if these highly attuned players had a premonition.

Release:1993 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Rock / Indie, Electronic / Dance
A download code is included. Re-release of the album which Marc Weiser (rechenzentrum, zeitkratzer) and Jürgen Hendlmeier (producer for The Flaming Sideburns, Thee Ultra Bimboos) created as Arurmukha. With the use of soundbites, field recordings, and stylistically diverse tracks, they reprocess the clearing of 13 squats on Mainzer Straße in Berlin-Friedrichshain in November 1990, forming it into an acoustic scenography in the style of the “Maifestspiele” by Einstürzende Neubauten. 14.11.2020 marks the 30th anniversary of the clearing of 13 squats on Mainzer Straße in Berlin-Friedrichshain. The violent confrontation between the police and about 500 squatters, involving armored vehicles, helicopters, and 10 water cannons, was the biggest police operation in Berlin’s post-war history, with 4000 officers deployed, and is deemed to be the last big “battle” of left-wing squatters in Germany. The insert for the LP provides a detailed chronicle of the events (taken from the book “Berlin Mainzer Straße: Wohnen ist wichtiger als das Gesetz [Berlin Mainzer Straße: Housing is more important than the law]”, published in 1992 by Basis-Druck).

Genre:Electronic / Dance
The release comes on 180g vinyl and a download code is included. Frank Bretschneider, Bérangère Maximin, Jasmine Guffond, Phonosphere and Kammerflimmer Kollektief celebrate Ernstalbrecht Stiebler’s 85th birthday with exclusive reworks of compositions by the German miminalist composer. Ernstalbrecht Stiebler (born march 29th 1934) is one of the first German composers involved with minimalism and ranks among the pioneers of reductive, repetitive, soundoriented music. Although honored with several prizes (e.g. the “Bach-Preis der Freien und Hansestadt Hamburg”), up to the current day only true connoisseurs of contemporary music are familiar with his oeuvre. On the occasion of his 85th anniversary this year, KARLRECORDS launches a series of albums with original pieces by Stiebler who besides his compositional work served as director for new music at Hessischer Rundfunk for over 25 years (where he supervised recordings of Morton Feldman, John Cage, Alvin Lucier, Giacinto Scelsi a.o.) and published numerous essays in Musik-Konzepte, MusikTexte and other music journals. The new Stiebler series, however, kicks off with “Reworks” – five artists from different musical backgrounds present their approach to and understanding of Stiebler’s minimalist aesthetics for which he cites “sonority, rhythm, and duration" as his three principal compositional concerns.

Be it solo, as member of the drone duo NADJA or B/B/S (his trio with ANDREA BELFI and ERIK SKODVIN / SVARTE GREINER) or in various collaborations with artists like TIM HECKER or THISQUIETARMY: the Berlin-based Canadian is one of the most productive and versatile artists when it's about postrock, drone or ambient and without doubt a true master on his instrument, the guitar. In recent years BAKER also starting exploring new grounds as a composer of contemporary / ensemble music – e.g. his composition "An Instance Of Rising" was commissioned by SPÓŁDZIELNIA MUZYCZNA CONTEMPORARY ENSEMBLE and SACRUM PROFANUM FESTIVAL for their 2017 edition. "Invisible Cities" marks BAKER's first collaboration with GARETH DAVIS whose eclectic oeuvrespans contemporary classical, free improvisation and orchestral music through to rock, noise and electronica. The bass clarinetist is a steady member of the critically acclaimed post-rock formationOISEAUX-TEMPÊTE and A-SUN AMISSA, interpreted compositions by ALVIN LUCIER with MACHINEFABRIEK, worked with BERNHARD LANG and PETER ABLINGER, performed with musicians likeNY Downtown veteran Elliott Sharp, MERZBOW or ROBIN RIMBAUD (aka SCANNER) and realized multimedia work with artists including CHRISTIAN MARCLAY and PETER GREENAWAY.
Recorded in November 2016 at MUZIEKHUIS, Utrecht, the four tracks create a calm, even meditative atmosphere in their reduced manner that gives much room to the individual instruments / sounds, occasionally spiced up by field recordings that intensify the overall chamber jazz / ambient moods.

An engaging and intriguing radio drama by the German poet Ulf Stolterfoht (directed by Iris Drögekamp and Thomas Weber) with music by the Kammerflimmer Kollektief. Based on secret messages excha nged by imprisoned Red Army Faction (RAF) members like Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and the rest of the gang, through this radio drama by Ulf Stolterfoht (winner of several literary prizes), the authors explore the power of names and denominations. Guests making surprise appearances are among others, Ludwig Wittgenstein,Herman Melville, and maybe even Rumpelstiltskin. The play unfolds in a highly unusual setting, weaving a tapestry of references. The music for this radio play was created by Kammerflimmer Kollektief, in their unique and uncategorizable blend of sound drawing inspiration from jazz, folk and electronic.

While the duo’s last album was a collection of 23 mostly short tracks, each an acribic examination of sounds that treated by techniques like modular synthesis, granular synthesis, spectral processing, granular synthesis, resynthesis and resonator / modal synthesis, ““C.H.R.O.N.O.S.” consists of five longer compositions that focus on creating a contemplative, zen-like atmosphere of subtle beauty. Rich in details, carefully sound-designed, Arovane and Porya Hatami prove once more their top notch skills when it’s about creating state of the art contemporary ambient.

After excessive years in rock bands like The Golden Showers or his solo project Boy From Brazil, time had come for the German-Palestinian artist Ghazi Barakat to develop a new aesthetic – the birth of his alias Pharoah Chromium where Barakat creates “meta-music for meta-people in a meta-world”, or in other words: a mutoid blend of post-krautrock, psychedelism, free jazz, ancient rituals, science fiction and electronics. So far the Berlin based sonic performer released a couple of solo albums on labels like Grautag or Tapeworm and a triple LP with krautrock legend Günter Schickert. For his latest output he decided to simply use his civilian name Barakat, as does Paul LaBrecque (Sunburnes Hand Of The Man) who contributes guitar and synthesizer to the two side-long tracks. “Jajouka Pipe Dream” is a clear reference to the Master Musicians Of Jajouka, with lots of flutes and percussion, a very rhythmical, ritualistic track, while “Planet R-101” turns out a spacey trip with elements of krautrock and Kosmische Musik / Berliner Schule.

Karl is excited to welcome a new artist on board: R.A.N. is the dark electronic / rhythmic ambient music project by Hüma Utku. “Seb-i Yelda” is available as 12” and download. Hailing from İstanbul and based in Berlin for a couple of years now, Hüma Utku has been a prolific artist lately: as R.A.N. (Roads At Night) she released her debut album ''Her Trembling Ceased'', followed by the remix album 'Remixed: Stories Retold' (both 2015, Partapart Records), and contributed several tracks and remixes to various compilations. Besides studio production, she travels the planet to perform live or as DJ, and in November / December 2017 Utku was Artist in Residency at Yara Mekawei’s Submarine Studio, Cairo. The title of her debut on Karl, “Seb-i Yelda” (pronounced Shab-e Yalda in English), is a Persian term that signifies ‘the longest night’. Inspired by the Ottoman poet Bosnian Sabit Efendi’s verses, R.A.N. created four new, very personal tracks, developing further her musical language by fusing traditional instruments with deep electronic sounds, distortion and dark ambience, in order to create intense atmospheres of anger, anxiety, grief – but also empowerment and hope. These compositions are Utku's personal reflections on the long lasting devastation and turmoil in the Middle East as well as witnessing the individual experiences related to these happenings. The titles translate as:'“Seb-i Yelda” (The Longest Night), “Ay” (The Moon), “Sabah” (The Morning) and “Kul” (The Servant of God).

THE OCEAN IS CLOSED is a collaboration of music ensemble zeitkratzer with performance group She She Pop.

Play – according to the cultural historian Johan Huizinga – is a free activity carried out within certain fixed boundaries in time and space according to voluntary, but necessarily binding rules. It has no goal outside itself and is accompanied by a feeling of excitement and joy. It creates social alliances that for their part often surround themselves in a secret or set themselves off from the everyday world by means of disguise.
In THE OCEAN IS CLOSED the "modern composition super group" (THE WIRE) zeitkratzer and the performance collective She She Pop observe each other across the limits of their own categories. They look in fascination at their "exotic" colleagues. Outside eyes and ears are interested in different things, ask the right wrong questions, misunderstand the agreements and breach basic laws.

She She Pop and zeitkratzer play a concert: secret, order and ocean. They celebrate music and play per se.

MICK HARRIS (SCORN, QUOIT, PAINKILLER) returns after several years of hiatus with ten tracks of blasting landmine bass and interlocking shrapnel rhythms.

I've been asked to write a press piece for the dark lord MICK HARRIS.

Where does one even start? Especially for someone with decades of releases over various solo projects, collaborations and pseudonyms, whether it's doing blast beats in the original NAPALM DEATH to crushing techno brutality as MONRELLA, or savage drum & bass as QUOIT. Then of course there's the mighty SCORN and his numerous collaborations with fellow luminaries such as JOHN ZORN and BILL LASWELL (in PAINKILLER).

Rather than being tied to genres or scenes, MICK HARRIS is one of those producers who creates a whole sonic world uniquely of his own, in which varying tracks, styles and tempos take form, but yet in which everything sounds unmistakably characteristic of the creator. Needless to say his work has influenced legions of producers like SURGEON, REGIS, ONTAL, VATICAN SHADOW / PRURIENT, FAUSTEN, SHAPEDNOISE et al, and pretty much anyone in the world of powerfully dark, abrasive music you could name-drop. And yet after all this time, it is impressive that HARRIS still stands way above his successors and has never been surpassed in his own production/performance game.

After a hiatus of several years, he is back with a new album under the guise of FRET.

Working at a faster tempo than his SCORN material, the FRET project first surfaced years ago on the DOWNWARDS label, rooting it firmly in the dark, industrial and technoid world, and appeared more recently on Tresor (Kern mix by OBJEKT), maintaining the characteristic colossal bass-heaviness and textural depth.

And now a full album on KARLRECORDS, Berlin.

HARRIS fans will be delighted to know that despite the 130 bpm tempo, the newest FRET still resolutely avoids any straight four-on-the-floor kickdrums; every track lurches, stumbles, staggers and charges forth with beats in beautifully broken asymmetry.
