We thought that all of Eddie & Ernie’s unreleased work had been issued when we made the “Lost Friends” Kent CD but this great number – ‘Nice To Be Near’ – has since been found and now graces a re-released pressing of ‘Indication’, a track which is so hard to find on its only previous release, the UK-only Jay Boy; issued in 1972.

George Jackson’s beautiful ‘Talking About The Love I Have For You’ has become increasingly in-demand in recent years and the original pressing is now fetching hundreds of pounds. To make this release even more tempting we have added his late 60s recording ‘It’s Not Safe To Mess Over Me’, a real southern soul stomper that was a star track on our “Fame Northern Soul” CD and debuts here on vinyl.

‘Baby Cakes’ was an Otis Redding song written for his singer Loretta Williams’ Jotis label release in 1965 and has become a much in-demand Northern Soul record in recent years. About 18 months later Otis reused the song on Maxine Brown when Wand records sent her to Muscle Shoals where she recorded two songs under his tutelage. This super version has never been on 45 before so expect sales to both Maxine and ‘Baby Cakes’ fans.

‘This Is My Chance’ lay dormant until the late 90s when it was included on an Ace CD of Excello southern soul material. That series was aimed mainly at ballad fans but Gentry’s mid-tempo charms made it ideal for the modern soul dance scene. The Kent promo 12” issued at the time is now an in-demand piece of vinyl. Mystery surrounds who wrote Shirley Brown’s ‘Even If The Signs Are Wrong’ but this splendid, lilting soul song deserves a vinyl release.

You have to really search through the Doré catalogue to find the soul 45s, but when you do it is hugely rewarding. Its jewels have only been revealed to Northern Soul collectors over time and several are ridiculously scarce; Little Johnny Hamilton’s ‘Keep On Movin’’ and the Swans’ ‘Nitty Gritty City’ remain one-off disc discoveries. Guaranteed dancefloor classics abound, including Rita & the Tiaras’ ‘Gone With The Wind Is My Love’, Little Johnny Hamilton’s ‘Oh How I Love You’ and the Puffs’ ‘I Only Cry Once A Day Now’.

The Superbs’ ‘Wind In My Sails’ and Milton James’ mesmeric ‘My Lonely Feeling’ represent the funkier end of the Northern Soul sound, while tracks by Ray Marchand and the Shades Of Jade are subtle mid-tempo soul of the highest quality. Nearly all are rare, expensive and beautiful, while Kenard’s ‘What Did You Gain By That’ is highly imaginative, and the Fidels’ ‘I’m Givin’ You Notice Baby’ is just a classic 60s soul stomper.

All together on beautiful 12-inch vinyl, they are irresistible.

Modern soul fans have been singing the praises of the 1975 master tape to Kent CD track ‘Daddy Please Stay Home’ by veteran soul singer Obrey Wilson. Wilson’s sad and regretful vocal is perfect for this mid-tempo groove.

Lee Brackett’s bouncy, more jazz-influenced ‘You Get To Me’ is from a couple of years earlier and was also ignored for a release at the time. It is just waiting for an enterprising DJ to programme it into their set for future fame all round.

Both sides of this vinyl nugget were discovered in the Wand vaults in the 80s. ‘What’s With This Loneliness’ went on to become a crossover champion and its original, very limited pressing now fetches £300 from collectors desperate to possess such soul perfection. This is a debut 7” press for ‘I Can’t Stand To See You Cry’; the definitive reading of the Van McCoy song that even tops Jerry Butler’s original release.

Two more recent 70s, modern soul-style discoveries which were issued last year on the “Hotlanta Soul 4” Kent CD. Lorraine Johnson verified the sumptuous vocals on ‘A Love Like Yours’ were indeed hers, although again the author of the song is unknown. Deep Velvet give a much more harmonious take on Ripple’s ‘Complain To The Clouds’, transforming it from a funk growl into a true soul song.
