Chuck Jackson
The Best Of The Wand Years
LP | 2018 | EU | Original (Kent)
19,99 €*
Release:2018 / EU – Original
Genre:Organic Grooves
"Although Chuck Jackson had eight solo LPs on Wand, there has never been a greatest hits compilation derived from all of that fine label’s recordings, until now.First known to the original mods as a singer of superb ballads such as ‘Any Day Now’ and ‘Tell Him I’m Not Home’, he attracted a loyal following and further releases such as ‘I Keep Forgetting’, ‘Beg Me’ and ‘Hand It Over’ demonstrated the depth of his and Wand’s talents on uptempo tracks. Somewhere in between rhythmically were highlights such as ‘Two Stupid Feet’, an album-only track, and Jackson’s Wand debut that first made his name in the USA, ‘I Don’t Want To Cry’.By the mid-60s it was back to ballads as a stunning reading of the Skyliners’ ‘Since I Don’t Have You’ charted, followed closely by Goffin and King’s ‘I Need You’. These two sold well so it is surprising that the superb version of the Van McCoy song ‘I Don’t Want To See You Cry’ was never released. Vee-Jay released Jerry Butler’s version on 45 in 1965, but Jackson’s rendition tops even that. Moving with the times, in 1965 Wand took Chuck to Detroit for ‘Good Things Come To Those Who Wait’ which, like ‘Chains Of Love’, became firm favourites on the early Northern Soul scene, while being largely ignored in the States. Those rare soul fans rekindled their appreciation of all things Chuck in the late 80s when UK Kent Records unearthed unissued Wand recordings. They included ‘What’s With This Loneliness’ and ‘(I’d Be A) Millionaire’ which filled dancefloors with new recruits and older originals who appreciated the easier pace and more soulful delivery of these gems. The compilation is crowned with a brilliant studio publicity shot of Chuck on the cover which captures both the majesty of his singing and the era. "

Here are two big Northern tracks on the funkier edge that are already hugely popular with forward-thinking DJs and dancers. Gruff-voiced Eddie Parker’s ‘Body Chains’ is a very different take on the Prodigal release with an added girl chorus and some appropriate and effective metal chains added by Jack Ashford for percussion. The Pace-Setters’ politically motivated ‘Push On Jesse Jackson’ has crossed over to the main Northern Soul dancefloors and this extended version from a five minutes plus master tape will cause a major stir for dancers and DJs alike.

Jeanette Jones is one of the great unsung belters of 60s soul. Though she had just one solo release in 1969, Jeanette’s powerful pipes have come to be admired by many in recent years, thanks to the appearance of originally unissued tracks such as ‘Cut Loose’ and ‘You’d Be Good For Me’ on Kent and BGP releases.Jeanette first came to prominence as the lead singer of the Voices Of Victory gospel choir. Singled out by studio owner Leo Kulka, she was signed in 1968 and began work on an album, with arrangements by such notables as Rene Hall and Wally Cox.Just one single slipped out from the sessions in 1969, the stirring ballad ‘Darling, I’m Standing By You’. Despite the quality of uptempo tracks such as ‘Break Someone Else’s Heart’ and ‘Jealous Moon’, Kulka was unable to shop the album and Jeanette eventually disappeared from the music scene.Kent’s vinyl album “Dreams All Come True” captures Jeanette at her ebullient best with her complete solo recordings in one neat package with beautiful photographs from the late 60s. A true treat for anyone touched by the gospel power of this little-heralded, eminently soulful diva.

One of the finest voices in Southern Soul, George Jackson’s success as a writer meant he wasn’t pushed as an artist and so his vinyl output is disappointingly small. Kent Records is rectifying that with this 12-track LP.

The fifth in our series of “The Stars Of....” EPs is drawn from the catalogue of Modern Records, UK Kent’s starting point. Of the earlier editions in the series, only “The Stars Of Mirwood” is still available – these limited editions sell out quickly, so don’t delay. Jackie Day’s ‘Before It’s Too Late’ and Vernon Garrett’s ‘If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time’ earned UK releases in the 60s and became early soul scene classics for British fans. Mary Love was known and appreciated back then but her Frank Wilson-penned pounder ‘I’ve Gotta Get You Back’ was an import-only job. It was not until the 80s that Johnny Gilliam’s melancholy was appreciated on the big ballad ‘You Make Me Feel Like Someone’. These four great tracks really work together and the cute 60s-style package makes them a must for Kent collectors.

When the New Orleans soul guys meet a sexy French girl, it ain’t nothin’ but fun. This 1963 recording has been picked up around the world as the epitome of the swinging 60s soul sound. Betty Bibbs is in a similarly light-hearted mood. By 1968 the sound had moved on but good-time music still brings a smile to the party.

With Maxine’s eagerly anticipated Cleethorpes gig this summer we reviewed her Wand output and discovered the magnificent Ashford & Simpson dancer ‘I Want A Guarantee’ had never been out on a 45: say no more. The flip is a beautiful crossover ballad from the Platters’ lead singer Sonny Turner whose ‘Now That You’re Gone’ recorded in 1972, really gets under the skin. Captivating, pure soul.

There has been a constant demand for Mel Williams’ Modern 45 ‘Can It Be Me’ since it was first spun at the Torch all-nighters in the early 70s. Its classic 60s stomping sound has made it a Northern perennial. The flip is the original instrumental of Mary Love’s ‘Lay This Burden Down’ that was pressed by Modern in 1974 for shady UK dealer Simon Soussain. Instrumentals are back in vogue and this is one of the very best.

The previously unknown Timmy Wilson recorded a terrific mid 60s R&B groove in Columbus, Ohio in late 1965. This is its first vinyl release after appearing on our new “Modernists” CD and is assured club plays from eager mod and R&B DJs around the world. The flip was an ‘unknown song by unknown artist’ until some astute detective work revealed that much-admired soul singer J R Bailey was the vocalist on this NYC-recorded Arock track. This is its first commercial release.

We have been releasing Dave Hamilton tracks on CD since 1998; several Kent and BGP singles have followed, but this is our first vinyl album. Finnish company Timmion have released individual LPs by Little Ann and O.C. Tolbert but this is the first various artists collection.‘What Can I Do’ by Little Ann starts the LP. It was the “unknown artist” acetate, played as Rose Valentine in the latter days of Wigan Casino, that turned it into a legendary disc. It is followed by two Topper singles which found great favour on the Northern Soul scene in the 2000s: Tobi Lark’s ‘Sweep It Out In The Shed’ and Dottie & Millie’s ‘Taking About My Baby’. Big voiced O.C. Tolbert contributes with ‘I’m Shooting High’, mid-tempo 60s soul perfection, and ‘You Got Me Turned Around’, the definitive take on that ‘Sweep It Out In The Shed’ backing track. Dave Hamilton’s acts were often obscure and records by James Lately and the Ravins are now so scarce they must have sold in tens rather than hundreds. They now reach four-figure prices, which is reflected in the quality. Like Little Ann, Danny Cobus is only known through unreleased tracks found in the vaults. His ‘The Two Of Us’ is a fabulous piece of music, now revered. Tobi Lark was the class act of the small set-up; her ‘Challenge My Love’ is a highlight of Dave Hamilton’s writing and production. Chico & Buddy were originally members of the Tokays but threw their lot in with the highly respected Dave Hamilton. ‘You Don’t Miss Your Water’ is a catchy late 60s dancer with just a hint of funk that has made it very popular. J.T. Rhythm’s ‘My Sweet Baby’ is the epitome of mid 60s effortless midtempo soul infused with a memorable melody. Dave’s vocals were at best charismatic and rightly confined to the call and response of tracks such as the catchy ‘Shoop Doop’: fortunately he excelled elsewhere.
