Release:1973 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Rock / Indie
Third LP in three years and substantially third center in a row, this was “Felona and Sorona”, the definitive consecration record for Le Orme, who became dominators of the Italian progressive rock scene, a status that still resists the inexorable passing of the years. The long opener “Sospesi nell’incredibile” shows how rules have definitely been broken: “Felona and Sorona” can therefore be seen as a statement of freedom and artistic independence, waved in front of an even wider audience. In 1973 in fact the so-called ‘new avant-garde pop’ was so popular as to influence the famous artists (such as De André with “E tutti morimmo a stento” or Battisti with “Amore e non amore”) and many musicians were not afraid to break barriers, album after album.“Felona and Sorona” is, in short, a masterpiece, of those who are made only once in a lifetime, impossible to replicate and therefore even more unique and special. The album was released in two versions, one sung in Italian and the other in English on lyrics written by Peter Hammill from Van Der Graaf Generator. This is the Italian edition, a faithful replica of the original edition on transparent green vinyl.

“Collage” is today a classic, both in its iconic cover photo and its music: never before had anyone in the Italian peninsula heard anything like that, if not of foreign origin. A cornerstone of what was then still called ‘Italian pop’, fundamental not only within the prog scene!

“Uomo di Pezza” (1972) renews the collaboration between Le Orme, producer Gian Piero Reverberi and Philips record label, on which the group debuted the previous year with “Collage”. As with the previous work, rock and pop are mixed with symphonic elements, creating another cornerstone of Italian progressive rock. This is the album of the popular “Gioco di bimba”, one of the most famous Le Orme’s songs, also released on 45rpm at the time. On a ‘progressive’ point of view, “Uomo di Pezza” can be seen as a transition LP, suspended between the beautiful “Collage” and the masterpiece “Felona and Sorona”, but still important to understand the rapid evolution of an essential band.

Often considered the 'black sheep' of Le Orme's discography,"Smogmagica" is actually a great LP, that needs to be contextualized to befully appreciated: we are in 1976, the masterpieces that have made thehistory of Italian progressive rock had already been written, and the same LeOrme had been important protagonists of this little musical revolution. In "Smogmagica", thanks to the presence of an additional blues-rockguitarist, Tolo Martin, and the 'American context' in which the recordingswere made, rock often leave space to more modern and mainstreamsounds; Purists hated this change as soon as the album was released, but ifyou listen with an open mind you'll soon reconsider this album as animportant part of a career in constant evolution."Smogmagica" stands out also for the wonderful cover painting by PaulWhitehead (Genesis, Van Der Graaf Generator...), full of tiny details that justbeg to be discovered, in the perfect prog tradition!

In the first half of the 70s the landscape of pop / rock music world wasrevolutionized by a current defined as 'progressive'. For those groups whodared to deviate from the 'commercial' stream and propose somethingdifferent, a double destiny was reserved: they could become a meteor-band,releasing only one LP or so before disappearing completely, or emerge fromanonymity and capture the attention of major record labels. This was the case of Le Orme who, after a debut on Car Juke-Box, wereengaged by Philips, releasing several albums who made history. And in anattempt to ride the wave of success led by "Collage", "Uomo di Pezza" and"Felona e Sorona", the record label didn't take long to propose the release ofa live record, which turned out to be "In concert ", one of the first if not THEactual first live album ever printed in Italy. The haste in wanting to market a new product with "Le Orme" brand on itprevailed on the quality of the recordings, consisting of one side fullyimprovised (the two parts of "Truck of Fire") and the other with songs fromthe "Collage" LP; but the charm of this work, also due to the beautifulphotographic cover, comes out unharmed, and the grooves of "In Concert"deliver us the 'real' Le Orme, without any tricks or deception, but sincere asonly a live performance can be!
