Lightnin' (The Blues Of Lightnin' Hopkins) was originally released in 1960. Featuring, as usual, his brilliant acoustic guitar work, Hopkins is accompanied here by a low key rhythm section of acoustic bass and mostly brushed drumming. The results of this minimal sound is some of the purest and most engaging blues music of the early 1960s. Though Hopkins had been recording blues and R&B for labels like Modern and Aladdin for over a decade, it was not until the folk revival firmly implanted itself into America's psyche that he crossed over to a larger audience. This is one of Hopkins earliest albums following his breakout onto the national stage and it's one of his finest performances of all-time.

Recorded in 1968, this stands out in his discography due to unusual line-up on the sessions, with the veteran bluesman fuelled by homemademoonshine supported by a young hippy rhythm section, comprising Danny Thomas & Duke Davis oF 13th Floor Elevators, both high on acid at the time. This however is no failed hippy/ blues amalgam, just a straightforward honest blues album.

Recorded in Houston in 1954 and released on the New York Herald label, these classic recordings of Hopkins feature him on amplified guitar with bass and drums. These are not the folk-blues many associate with Hopkins, these are raw and glorious R&B tinged blues recordings way more for the juke joints than the folk festivals. Lightnin' Hopkins is one of the most crucial blues musicians in history, and these are his most rocking and raucous sides ever!

Lightnin’ Hopkins had already recorded dozens, if not hundreds, of sides for various labels by the time he hooked up with Chris Strachwitz in the late ‘50s, but his recordings for Strachwitz’s Arhoolie label are some of the rawest and strongest of his career. Originally released in 1968, this classic slab of Texas blues is reissued here on high quality vinyl with an exact reproduction of the paste-on sleeve. On red 180 gram vinyl.
