Don't be mislead from the name, the enigmatic M. Zalla, is one of the numerous alter ego of the italian maestro Piero Umiliani. Umiliani, during his period of fascination for psychedelic and electronic atmospheres, starts to compose a good number of musical portraits dedicated, as the title reveals, to the problems of his time. We are at the beginning of '70 and italians are worried by mafia, terrorism and social conflicts: so it has sense that the music choosen to represent this anxious problems has a sperimental nature; dark and disturbing a sort of unicum in the long and extremly productive Umiliani career. And if, in 2015, titles as “Mondo in Crisi”, “Problemi Sociali”, “Azione Sindacale” and “Mafia Oggi” sounds still sadly actual, it's even more surprising find that the music of “Problemi d'Oggi” (Today Problems) is projected on the future, sounding still alien and uniques. The record presents various styles: from Pink Floyd atmospheres (or Braen's Machine if you prefer...) to compositions characterized by a great use of drum machines and synthetizer (MOOG and Sinthy). We just have to listen the begginning of the opening track “Produzione” to give sense to the words of Sean Canty (Demdike Stare) that defines the music the first techno/trance track of the history; but between the grooves of this vinyl it's easy to find intuitions that many other artist and musicians – from Residents to Aphex Twin and Four Tet – will be able to catch during their carrers.

“Produzione”, originally released in 1973 on Piero Umiliani’s LP “Problemi d’oggi”, is an amazing mix of acoustic percussion and electronic experimentation, considered by some as the first example of techno / trance music ever recorded. This song, along with “Attività”, another excerpt from “Problemi d’oggi”, has been ‘reworked’ by Gerardo Frisina, who cleverly extends the original content by mixing it with contemporary electronic sensations. The result, packaged in an artwork inspired by the original 1973 release, are two tracks in which the ’70s avant-garde and today’s music blend with surprising ease.

Among all the aliases used by the great Piero Umiliani, M. Zalla is perhaps his richest and surprisingly multifarious. “Suspense” perfectly anticipates what you will hear in its seventeen songs: tension, gloomy atmospheres, mystery and, needless to say, suspense elements that convey anxiety and distress. Thanks to the clever use of Moog and keyboards, c ombined with magnificent orchestral arrangements, the tracks rapidly flow one after another in a cre scendo that leaves you breathless.Among all the aliases used by the great Piero Umiliani, M. Zalla is perhaps his most rich and surprisingly multifarious: mainly used to produce experimental records that had little commercial appeal, this ‘nom de plume’ (along with Moggi) is tied to memorable episodes of his career, releases such as “Problemi d’oggi” (literally “Today’s Problems”), “Mondo inquieto” (i.e. “An Unsettling World”), and also “Suspense”, now reissued by Schema Records. And if titles such as those mentioned above may somehow disguise the musical content (electronic music, by the way), “Suspense” perfectly anticipates what you will hear in its seventeen songs. A full-black front cover, the title written with yellow coloured typeface (it couldn’t be any different) for an album that promises tension, gloomy atmospheres, mystery and, needless to say, suspense elements that convey anxiety and distress. Thanks to the clever use of Moog and keyboards, combined with magnificent orchestral arrangements, the tracks rapidly flow one after another in a crescendo that leaves you breathless, to cite the title of one of the best tracks. And, speaking about the titles of the tracks, what better way to introduce this reissue to the public other than quoting “Suspense notturna”, “Paura sul fondo”, “Killer”, “Inquieto”, “Suspense angosciosa”, “Evasione notturna” and my favourite one, “Suspense atomica”. A treat for your ears, and another fundamental piece to reconstruct the story of a Master of Italian music. Lean back in your chair and turn off the light...

“The Folk Group” represents a peculiar work within Piero Umiliani’s seemingly endless career.Recorded for the Background Music series, it uncovers the Maestro’s passion for folk and ’60s/’70smusic. It’s especially characterized by the bizarre “Guitar Improvisation” and the incredible and funky“Underworld”, a gem that we recommend to any hip-hop producer!

Maestro Piero Umiliani returns in the alter ego guise of M. Zalla for the 1974 compositional library piece Mondo Inquieto (‘Restless World’) via his far reaching, experimentalist imprint Sound Work Shop. Ambient tensions are represented via a dramatic cross fertilisation of orchestral strings, layered synths and primeval percussion with the Maestro on moody, reflective compositional duties. Stand out cut Strategia (‘Strategy’) harnesses the dopest Wu Tang Beats alongside swathes of high end electro blankets and is a sample classic aching to be reworked into further outer cosmos soundscapes. Black Sweat has again transferred the elements of this little known Umiliani microcosm into a respectful reissue via an integration of the stark, haunting sleeve design, Laquer cutting from the original master tapes and Umiliani’s autograph notes on the project.
