Release:2019 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
After years of releasing other artists on the label, Martyn returns to 3024 himself with two brand new tracks. Properly reflecting the music he has been DJ'ing out recently, these are two high energy drum workouts that can go straight in the bag. One Eye is an electro based melodic builder, while Nerve Centers is heavily inspired by a more international Drum sound, forwarded by producers such as Noire, NKC, Ahadadream, Principe crew etc.

Martyn releases new album Voids, his first for Ostgut Ton Over the past year, Dutch-born, Washington D.C.-based producer Martyn has undergone a metamorphosis – one that began with a medical emergency and has dovetailed into personal musical transformation. Having narrowly avoided death after suffering a heart attack, Martyn reentered his studio and began a process of reassessing the elements that drive him to make music: sampling, unpredictability, melancholy, sci-fi, polyrhythms, texture, ecstatic moments, Detroit, interlocking percussion and bass. However, the initial spark to start producing again came through his experience listening to Max Roach’s 1979 ensemble percussion album M’Boom. In his own words: “That was the first record I listened to in my studio after coming out of the hospital. It's a project where he works with a slew of top-notch percussionists and drummers and rotates them for every composition. Playing this record was such a surreal experience, the first music I consciously listened to after my recovery. I could hear so much space in the music, something I had never noticed before; almost like a 3D experience, with the most striking aspect being the emptiness between the players.” Over the next 8 months Martyn would go on to write Voids, his first LP for Ostgut Ton and in a few other ways markedly different than previous records; it features no guest appearances or collaborations and at 9 tracks, is musically stripped down to the essentials. It’s also a highly personal take on forging new paths forward in genres where the Berghain/Panorama Bar resident has long been known for his production wizardry and innovation: post-dubstep and UK garage.

Odds Against Us
12" | 2019 | EU | Original (Ostgut Ton)

Release:2019 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
On 2018’s Voids, long-time Berghain / Panorama Bar resident Martyn returned to his deep, percussive roots, nimbly constructing webs of rhythm, space and inventive basslines centered around his near-death experience following a heart attack in his Washington D.C. studio (documented in RA’s 2018 mini-documentary). Since then, these parameters have continued to shape Martyn’s unified approach to drum 'n' bass, gqom, post-dubstep and rhythmic offshoots. On Odds Against Us, the producer projects the common denominator as a spirit of sampling innovated by drum 'n' bass, but which operates independent of BPM, as shown by the title track’s floating, Havoc-like piano riff over minimal, mutant UKG and a snarling, amorphous bassline. From there, “B.C. 2” drives full-on at 170 – Detroit deepness through a London lens; emotion meets sci-fi. EP closer “Rhythm Ritual” delivers on the title’s promise, with layers of interlocking drums, melody and chopped vocals that is at once whole and broken down into component parts. While Odds Against Us sees Martyn revisiting his musical beginnings, the sound and emotion once again emerge from a holistic perspective to rhythm and dance music.
