In 1955, Miles Davis played a beautifully received set at the Newport Jazz Festival and was offered a contract with Columbia Records if he could get a steady group together. In order to record for Columbia, Davis would first have to settle an obligation to Prestige and so he put together the now legendary quintet with John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. It was under these conditions, in a desire to churn out as many records as possible to change labels, that Davis recorded some of the most celebrated music of his entire career. This group, in the span of several months released a half-dozen LPs including this one and the great Cookin’, Workin’, etc. titles. This title, originally recorded in 1955 features a great Ellington piece, the brilliant Miles original “The Theme”, and several other great tunes, but most importantly it is the introduction to a group that features two towering giants of jazz together on some of the fieriest playing of either’s career. Brilliant.

"As the 1960s came to a close, Miles Davis had
begun to drift away from traditional jazz music, as his
second ""quintet"" period reached an end. He had
been toying with jazz fusion in live settings, and on
his two 1968 releases Miles In The Sky and Filles de
Kilimanjaro. Then came 1969's In A Silent Way, an
experimental work of jazz music, clocking in at nearly
40 minutes, stretched across four tracks. An album
which featured revolutionary production and editing
techniques, (Courtesy of frequent Davis producer
and collaborator Teo Macero) and contributions from
many of the greatest jazz musicians of all time,
among them were Herbie Hancock on keys, Wayne
Shorter on saxophone, Tony Williams on drums, and
then newcomer John McLaughlin, who would go on
to form the acclaimed Mahavishnu Orchestra.
With such an eclectic sound, and a stunning array of
talent, contemporary reviewers didn't know at first
what to think of In A Silent Way. Many jazz critics
considered Davis' merging of genres to be a betrayal
of tradition, while rock critics reacted ecstatically.
(Rolling Stone's own Lester Bangs once referred to
In A Silent Way as ""the kind of album that gives you
faith in the future of music."") Over time critical
reception to the album improved dramatically, and
the album is largely considered one of Davis' finest
achievements, and a significant piece of jazz history.
An album that foresaw where the genre was headed
and gleefully embraced the future, setting the stage
for greater things to come, as Miles Davis entered
the 1970s."

The music conceived by Miles Davis and Gil Evans between 1949 and 1950, and released in 1957 on Capitol records marks an important new step in Jazz. Featuring an unusual line up and innovative classical oriented arrangements, this historical album represents the birth of a new form of Jazz. For the occasion Davis and Evans display a stellar nonet including, among others, Lee Konitz (alto sax), Gerry Mulligan (baritone sax), John Lewis (piano) and Max Roach (drums). The result was an unprecedented and highly sophisticated form of music which would be subsequently called "Cool Jazz"

It's 1964 and the first Berlin Jazz Festival is about to reach its absolute peak: the final concert on the night of Friday, 25th September by Miles Davis. And the European subsidiary of Columbia Records, CBS, couldn’t wait to release this legendary event on LP.
The new quintet, for the first time with Wayne Shorter on the tenor sax (and not yet as composer), thrilled and roused the audience in the Philharmonie from the first minute to the very end. The classics "Miles(tones)", "So What" and "Walkin’" were performed at an astonishingly fast pace, the ballads were tender and dreamy. Such a magical atmosphere was rarely evoked at later concerts, which was probably due to the excellent acoustics of the large concert hall. The audience were also seated behind the stage, so Miles couldn't turn his back provokingly on people; sometimes he just squatted on the stage. However, this didn’t prevent him from performing his solos lyrically and tenderly, most of them finely nuanced, soft and gentle, yet audible right into the furthest corner. The rhythmic structure created by the young drummer Anthony Williams provided the necessary excitement.
Miles at the top of his form, an enthusiastic audience, impressive acoustics and, to top it all, excellent recording technology and a fantastic pressing on virgin vinyl - what more does a jazz fan want? Now’s the time to dig out your credit card!

This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. All royalties and mechanical rights have been paid.

In 1957, Miles Davis is in Paris for an engagement at the Club Saint-Germain and a wonderful concert at the Olympia Theatre. Once in Paris, Miles came into contact with many members of the modern existentialist cultural environment in the neighborhood of Saint-Germain-des-Près. These include the director Louis Malle who had just finished his first movie : "Ascenseur Pour L'échafaud". Jean-Paul Rappeneau, a Jazz fan and Louis Malle's assistant at the time, suggested asking Miles Davis to create the film's soundtrack. A private sceening has been organized.
On December 4 1957, Miles Davis brought three French Jazzmen - Barney Wilen on tenor saxophone, René Urtreger on piano, Pierre Michelot on bass and his american compatriot Kenny Clarke on drums - to the recording studio Le Poste Parisien without having them prepare anything. Miles Davis only gave the musicians a few rudimentary harmonic sequences he had assembled in his hotel room. This recording was made at night in a most informal atmosphere.
The soundtrack was not released on it's own in the USA but ten songs from this soundtrack were released as one side of the album "Jazz Track" which received a 1960 Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Performance, Solo or Small Group.
"Ascenseur Pour L'échafaud" has become a great achievement of artistic excellence.

· Davis’ First Great Quintet Delivers Soul, Sweetness, Spirituality, and Intensity: Unsurpassed Jazz Dance Includes the Eternal “Summertime” and Harmonic
“Prayer”

If a more significant, influential, and lasting result of a creative musical partnership exists than that of Miles Davis and Gil Evans’ Porgy and Bess, society hasn’t seen it. It’s impossible to overstate
the importance of the pair’s collaboration on the landmark 1959 update of George Gershwin’s opera. Transcending genre, time, and place, the profound statement finds Evans and Davis implementing
modal approaches in a mainstream context and advancing jazz idioms that would become the foundation of the form’s still-classic era. Davis and Evans’ adaptation of Porgy and Bess remains of
a piece, an American touchstone that immediately separated itself from the multiple other versions released during the same period. And that’s saying nothing of the soulful playing—legendary
performances by Davis’ first great quintet that can now be heard in pristine detail courtesy of these definitive editions.

Mastered from the original tapes and strictly limited to 4,000 numbered copies on 180g 45RPM 2LP and 3,000 numbered copies on hybrid SACD, Porgy and Bess attains previously unheard
degrees of clarity, openness, immediacy, and depth on Mobile Fidelity’s meticulous reissues. Here, the arrangements unfold amidst practically limitless soundstages and burst with multi-dimensional
images. Davis’ iconic solo passages take on borderline-surreal qualities of realism and shape. The magisterial scope of the Evans conducted orchestra emerges with room-filling bloom, colour, and
dynamics. At once sweet and spiritual, sure and steady, graceful and exuberant, happy and sad, Porgy and Bess is a phenomenal jazz dance that has never been equalled. You can’t afford not to hear
it in the finest-possible fidelity.

Sketches of Spain is regarded as an exemplary recording of Third Stream, a musical fusion of jazz, European classical, and styles from world music

Lift to the Scaffold or, in the original French title, Ascenseur pour l'échafaud, is a brilliant film noir from 1958 that helped to establish the Nouvelle Vague and the New Modern Cinema scenes. No less brilliant is the score, composed by Miles Davis and featuring mostly French musicians, including the great Barney Wilen on tenor saxophone, as well as Kenny Clarke on drums, this is some of the most lonesome and morose music Davis recorded in his career. Perfectly matching the stark, dangerous, and grim moods of the film, this is a truly amazing score by one of the biggest names in jazz music history.

Scorned by critics at the time of its release, Miles Davis' 1972 album 'On The Corner' is now seen as a forerunner of Post Punk, Hip Hop, Drum and Bass and Electronic music, thanks to its revolutionary recording techniques. Miles wanted to reconnect with a younger audience, who had forsaken him for Rock and funk, and the experimental On The Corner was his answer. Leaning more heavily on a drum and bass groundwork, the overdubs consisted of free improvisations held in the studio. On The Corner' isn't one of Miles easiest records to listen to, but it can yield the most fruits. Now released with completely re-mastered audio.

Following the 1949 and 1950 recordings compiled on Birth Of The Cool, which created the sub-genre of cool jazz, Miles Davis had already moved onto the next thing, because that's what an innovator does. By 1951 he was recording hard bop of the highest order on a variety of formats, including 10" and 7". This LP compiles a number of those recordings, and the fact that the entire record was recorded on one day, October 5, 1951, would be surprising if it weren't the one and only Miles Davis. Featuring Art Blakey; Sonny Rollins; Walter Bishop, Jr.; Tommy Potter; and Jackie McLean in his very first recording session, this is classic '50s Miles Davis.

The live performance which would be the focus of Miles Davis' 1965 album, My Funny Valentine, was the second of two live sets recorded at the recently built Philharmonic Hall in New York. The concert, consisting primarily of slow and mid-tempo numbers, presented a tense and awkward atmosphere to Davis and the latest iteration of his quintet; they were embarking on their highest prestige gig at the time, right on the cusp of the assassination of president John F. Kennedy. Tensions were so high that by the end of the concert they believed that they had botched their performance, and bombed the entire show.
Fortunately Davis and his quintet were wrong. Far from bombing, the recordings on My Funny Valentine were critically applauded, with Davis biographer Ian Carr going on to call the album "...one of the very greatest recordings of a live concert."
My Funny Valentine features inspired performances by Davis and his crew, who brought solemn depth to compositions by Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Victor Young, Jimmy Van Heusen, and a live take on "All Blues", the lone Davis piece on the record. My Funny Valentine would not only rank as one of his finest live recordings, but it would be his last collaboration with saxophonist George Coleman, ushering in the arrival of his "Second Great Quintet" period.

Originally released in 1974, Big Fun presents music from three different phases of Miles Davis's early-seventies "electric" period. Sides one and four ("Great Expectations" and "Lonely Fire") were recorded three months after the Bitches Brew sessions and incorporate sitar, tambura, tabla, and other Indian instruments. "Ife" was recorded after the 1972 On the Corner sessions, and the framework is similar to tracks from that record. Recorded in March 1970, "Go Ahead John" is an outtake from Davis's Jack Johnson sessions.
