Release:2018 / US – Original

Just in time for the summer, Moniquea is back with a future glass house staple entitled "All The Time." Riding thick, squiggly production from XL Middleton, modern funk's first lady delivers declarations of dominance that might make you want to stand up, pop and lock, or have a seat and slam dominoes on the table top. His Lady: Moniquea delivers a solid slab of modern g-funk on "His Lady," a future roller skate staple featuring an instrumental culled from the mid 2000's vaults of XL Middleton. The track still sounds fresh nearly a decade and a half later thanks to Moniquea's timeless songwriting and silky delivery.

Bodyrock Shotgun
CD | 2018 | US | Original (Mofunk)

Release:2018 / US – Original
Genre:Organic Grooves
Tales of sordid street escapades, drugs and fast women have been long running themes for Tucson, AZ’s Zackey Force Funk. Though these are themes that have been explored to excess in music over the years, his psychedelic, acid-trip style has been what places him in another realm. Three quarters singing and one quarter rapping, the Force Funk sound has been well-established in the world of underground electronic music over the last decade. With the arrival of his MoFunk debut album, Bodyrock Shotgun, ZFF is set to advance yet another level with melodic modern funk production that challenges him to expand his one-of-a-kind vocal style to new territory.

Highlights include the XL Middleton-produced title cut, a slow-rolling, vocoder-laced tune that haunts as much as it thumps. Brian Ellis brings his signature brand of moody electro funk on “Glass Dick Lovin’,” a dark tale of love lost to drug addiction. “Money Weighs A Ton,” imported from the recent Boy Dude LP on Hobo Camp, slides seamlessly into the playlist with pulsating synths framing an unapologetic hustler’s manifesto. “El Mero Mero” (prod. by XL Middleton) stands as another declaration of street corner superiority, while “Get The Gun” serves as a self-explanatory footnote on how to keep said position, over Moog-y production from Adam Chini that is equal parts Blaxploitation and retro science fiction. Further productions from Throwback Zack, Proh Mic, Trailer Limon, DJ Spy-D, and Elegant Borzoi form a veritable who’s who in the land of modern funk, and show Zackey’s superb ear for beat curation.

The intriguing character known as Zackey Force Funk is bringing his psychedelic brand of future funk to MoFunk Records, one of the prime players in the ever-expanding world of modern funk. Designed as an appetizer for his full-length MoFunk project, Zackey brings you "Slow Attack," a track that delivers on the promise of its title, with brooding, ominous, synth-heavy production from Liquid Pegasus. It’s the kind of track that demands play in a lowrider driving straight from the darkest corners of hell.

The flip, XL Middleton’s “You’re So Different,” is a bonus track from his “Things Are Happening” LP, previously only available on the CD release. It’s a perfect counterpoint to Zackey’s A-side, a frenetic slice of modern electro-funk, drenched in loose synth lines and staccato bass notes, as Middleton delivers sly commentary on those who falsely declare themselves intellectually superior. It’s a dance floor filler with a cynical, yet humorous message intertwined.
