Returning to Not An Animal for the first time in 3 years, Ian Blevins crashes in with a massive EP that results in some dreamy electronica primed for the dance. Lobster Who Is Criminally Insane loads up the A1 with a track that veers towards the progressive house formula, whilst building on the more natural electronic blueprints. It’s rigorous and deadly, as synths build the pressure and detonate with devastating effects. Discodromo make their debut with a destructive remix of Lobster Who Is Criminally Insane. Stripping the track down and driving it down a more percussive avenue, the leads melodies are used to create an immense breakdown with epic results. Air Penguin carries on the same vibe as a refined mid-set floor filler, with an illustrious canopy of dreamy synths and counter melodies that rattle subs across the globe. Chida finishes off the 12" with his welcome return to the label with another remix that does the damage. Bringing the more offensive elements of the track, it takes the atmosphere and runs with it, adding some immense tension but remaining focused on the floor.

Things I see. Things I hear. Things I say. Things I wish I'd said. Things I do. Things I'm meant to do. Things I wish I'd done. Things I love. Things that make me love. Things that make me smile. Returning to Not An Animal for the 4th time, Ess O Ess create the 'Voice Inside' on NAAR 16.
Instantly tom rolling into a neo-electro commodity, 'Voice Inside' undulates with lustrous vocals that stand as the tracks core. Pads cling to bleeps and guitar chunks that evaporate with alternating delays. 'Voice Inside (French)' adds a sensual linguistic twist, although the elements remain the same, they feel so different. 'Voice Inside (Dub)' completes the A, stripping tones back and chopping the duration to find yet another gorgeous avenue.
On the flip, Backwoods Remix adds to the original atmosphere with a face scrunching bass-line and pulsating 4/4 kicks that embraces the not so distant future. Last but by no means least, the mighty Craig Richards' signature 808s pound on the remix to close the B. Pulling darker tones to pitch shifted vocals, this minimalist beat composition is perfectly suited for vigorous floors.

Disseminating impeccable groove through his first input on NAA, Japan's Que Sakamoto tears things up in a sumptuous fashion on NAA14. 'Uchuu Hikoushi' floats along the darker side of the Adriatic coastline with a bouncy plucked bass, shuffling drums and a mystical pad that becomes reminiscent of a wave softly hitting the shore. Apiento's remix brings the A to close with a minimalistic bare bones approach that takes us to another island. Broken-beat drums slither towards dusk, but the atmosphere remains with delicate bleeps and low-end sub vibrations. 'Kamakura' jets straight off into the horizon with some precise Miami Vice speedboat swagger. Polished Jazzy tones bend alongside tender Rhodes and guitar chords, adding the extra hydro-force to keep this track as chic as possible. Quickly picked up after some serious attention, Vyvyan's remix closes the EP with a venomous bass that is the clear driving force. Additional 303s cling to stems for that extra bit of squelch.

Transmitting treacherous local energy into his new creative undertakings, Bogdan now joins the Not An Animal force keeping the flame well and truly ignited. A'Parovoznikov' fires across all cylinders with a vigorous Italo-arp bass motor, driving it further down the cosmic highway, engine doused in fully-lubricated synth-pad oil. Justin Van Der Volgen's remix swiftly rips the wing mirror clean off with a zealous two-to-the-floor-hitting blowout. On the B, 'Listopad' cruises top down with a more Balearic approach. A dreamy square bass glissades alongside percussive hats and succulent pads that shuffle within the horizon, whilst computer bleeps chomp and add an intensifying clarity. Kito Jempere's remix closes the release with his first contribution to the label. It lifts up the original and drives towards sundown into moonlight. Warping bass tones squelch against fetching stabs and brash breaks keeping this track fully pulsating.

Ess O Ess (aka Chris Stoker and Jamie Blanco) return to Not An Animal to further indulge in the organic house territories previously mined for the previous releases. The duo have an uncanny nack for deftly balancing the rockier end of Disco with the authenticity of early house, and never more so than on "Secret Place. The original bounces and struts in a pleasingly groove laden hypnotic fashion, while the dub version turns down the guitars and turns up the synthesisers for a more heads-down dance floor excursion. On remix detail Kuniyuki Takahashi makes his 1st appearance on the label. On the vinyl you'll find an interpretation which can be best be described as pitched-down balearic-techno, which clicks, clacks and folds upon itself, drowning in waves of reverbed drama-drums at a deceptively low tempo. Kuniyuki also provides a second remix as a digital exclusive, mildly pulling back on the pomp of the vinyl version, but replacing it with a spacious pathos, complete with backwards guitars that reminiscent of an electronic within without you era Beatles. Angaphora make their NAAR debut with their own wildly stirring remix of the lead track, which evokes the golden era of 80s melodic pop music to bewildering success, laden with digitised emotion, singing ebow guitar, and not a kick drum in site.

New to the NAAR stable, In:State & Giuli make their debut in stunning style.Visitoz is a straight forward techno affair, as bumping as it is surprising. Using a deceptively simple gated arp and horn to dazzlingly complex effect. The track is potentially the most peak time NAAR has gone yet, and it's an incredibly welcome addition to their canon. On remix duty Lauer takes a hold of the main arpeggio and turns it monstrous in the style of Liasions Dangeruese, yet balances this with his trademark lightness of touch and his ear for a heart wrenching synth line, creating an instant classic that feels like it was beamed straight in from 1986. "Plus 1" has been sent from a parallel dimension where the evolution of music took a turn so different that Proto Garage stands where Proto House should be. The track has the step and swagger of the most compelling end of the 2 step movement, but balances that with the surprising naivete and earnestness found in Italo, EBM and early forays from Chicago. Finishing things off, Lizards return to the label for a welcome encore following last years success with their 1st release, Tanni.

NAAR continues to show its pedigree for hybrid music with James Hadfield's (1 half of Lizards) freshman release on the label straddling the lines between Techno Drive & Cinematic Pathos on the track "Buried Answers" then coming at it from all angles into the frankly unhinged cut "Literate". Tiago Manages to change the vibe yet keep the spirit of the original as he pours some acid onto his freeform remix of Literate, while Jamie Blanco's remix of Buried Answers sees him channeling 80s New Wave Proto House sounds to amazing effect with an opus that sounds equal parts New Order and Severed Heads.

Lizards are Lee Forster (1/3 Last Waltz) and James Hadfield (the mainstay of the Elizabeth Collective). Taking over a full side, and clocking in at over 9 minutes, Anthemic understatement is a very difficult trick to pull of, but the deepness of feel here, coupled with the restraint shown in rhythm and melody, allows the track space to ebb, flow and truly get under the skin of the listener. It's one of those rare tracks that are as equally beautiful as they are danceable International Track lives up to it's name, seeing the North Eastern English producers channel the Japanese take on the Balearic sound as heard in productions by artists such as CosMes. Ironically, with his remix, Japanese based Max Essa lends a Euro Pop lilt to the track, softening the beats and adding delicate 80s digital melodies.
