Pioneer DJ, Guy Cuevas made his name by being one of the first resident in the famous Parisian club “Le Palace”, shortly after it opened in 1978. Attracting some of the biggest names in the entertainment business like Prince, Madonna, Kenzo, Serge Gainsbourg, the location was a must-go for anyone wanting to party over the Paris adopted Cuban expat's amazing selection.Released in 1983, Guy Cuevas’ 12” Single "Obsession" is probably one of the best French Disco-Boogie records, enriched by Jean-Paul Goude's artwork for the cover. The A-side's Nassau mix by François K is a sensual and airy journey, while the B-side's London mix offers a more realistic approach that will please the more classic-listening disco enthusiasts.

An original copy of the Brasileira LP by Brazilian singer Maria Rita Stumpf has been on top of collectors' and music lovers' wishlist for the past couple of years, since "Cântico Brasileiro No 3 (Kamaiurá)" broke out and cast a spell worldwide – from Japan to Brazil, from Norway to South Africa, everybody was flabbergasted after they first heard the song, and each and every time they heard it again. For the lucky ones that could listen to her whole album – and get to know other gems such as "Lamento Africano/Rictus" and "A Cidade"– it is clear that it is an ouvre that more people should have access to, not only an elite of listeners and connaisseurs.

Over the last five years and as many volumes of their “Beach Diggin’” compilations, Guts and Mambo have explored the reefs of five continents, dredged the sea beds of countless seas and oceans, examined every single seashell with the aim of making sure that no vinyl pearl should escape their notice.Tunisian reggae, Japanese disco, West Indian jazz-funk, the duo’s aesthetic dribbling skills would stop the savviest Brazilian football player dead in his tracks, and it was with this in mind, that they proceeded to select their discoveries. With a marked preference for meditative free-diving rather than tour package scuba diving, and isolated spots rather than massively overdeveloped beach fronts. For this latest installment of their adventures, Guts and Mambo have organized another expedition around the world, to salute the spots where for the last five years they have uncovered rare specimens, saving some of them from total extinction, while shining a light on others that amply deserved it.Though each “Beach Diggin’” compilation can be listened to independently of the others, the five together now form a kind of navigational chart signaling with its green flags the places where, in Africa, Europe, Asia, America, and the South Pacific, they gamboled on sandy beaches, avoiding the well-trodden path, becoming more and more demanding with each passing year. Beach diggin’ is a state of mind...The fifth and last volume of this well and successful series comes with a deluxe packaging as usual.

Curiously enough the story of this record begins with a song, which isn't even featured on it. A song named 'Guayabas'. One of Guillermo Reuter's very first free-spirited compositions is one of his two contributions to the fourth album 'Ese Dia Va A Llegar' by friend and musician Agustin Pereyra Lucena, in 1975. 'Guayabas' was the unintended starting signal for Reuter'scareer and was coincidentally the initial spark for this reissue that you, dear reader and listener, are holding in your hands right now.

A few years ago, Melodies family members Floating Points and DJ Red Greg got their hands on a couple of original 70s obscurities. While these standout records shone brightly in their own right, the two DJs saw the potential to create their own edits behind the scenes, finely attuning the original versions to modern-day dancefloor standards. Of these new recordings, they cut only five copies for themselves and a few DJ friends of theirs. Today, Melodies International is very proud to bring you MEL006 and MEL007. Fully licensed, lovingly mastered to the highest possible standards and carefully edited to dial up that dancefloor enjoyment, these two ‘You’re A Melody’ classics weren’t originally meant to get official releases. But due to popular request, they are now available to play and share in very special moments at parties around the world.MEL6 arrives as a 7-inch, with the original version and the edit on the flip. First released in 1979 as a three-minute up-tempo library recording, “Disco Baby”, one of 10 tracks off a record available to license for film, radio, television and other media, held some hidden magic that would only get uncovered almost four decades later. Informed by years of combined dancefloor experience, Floating Points and Red Greg have slightly tweaked the original material, realising that played in the right context, it can become a true disco anthem.

The Heliocentrics are a group for which genres are meaningless and boundaries invisible. Since first appearing on DJ Shadow’s 2006 album The Outsider the group have gone on to release a string of records that float through jazz, hip-hop, psych, krautrock, and musique concrete whilst collaborating with numerous genre heavyweights from Mulatu Astake to Gaslamp Killer and picking up prestigious fans along the way, such as Madlib and the recently departed David Axelrod. The primarily instrumental group, who operate out of their vintage analogue studio in East London called the Quatermass Sound Lab, bring in a new singer on album number four - a young Slovakian singer called Barbora Patkova. The result is an album that takes the band, already solidified in ever-expanding grooves and rhythms into new previously unexplored dimensions. The group’s deep-set ability to craft music intuitively and impulsively stems from a desire to avoid typical processes or generic structures. Since its conception, the band’s music has mainly been created from live improvisation. This musical approach gives the band its own sound and identity -”for anything to happen it must be at that time from the people in the room, and on the spot”. A decade of such sonic adventures has resulted in a tightly knit bond that the group refer to as “almost a form of telepathy” with “musical changes that otherwise would be near impossible to write.”

Far Out Recordings are honoured to be working with master composer, arranger and pianist, Antonio Adolfo for the first time since releasing his Destiny album in 2007. This time we present the first ever vinyl reissue of his era-defining Viralata LP: An essential album from Brazil's majorly progressive heyday of late seventies jazz-funk. Viralata is a sacred artefact of Brazilian music, which Antonio himself describes as ‘a product of my hybrid musical influences that joins together flavours of marchinhas de carnaval, frevo, toada, classical, baião, mpb and jazz, etc’.The album’s first track ‘Cascavel’ is the emotionally charged, celebratory dance anthem, which became a London jazz-dance classic in the early ‘90s after Far Out label boss Joe Davis discovered a handful of copies in a second hand shop in Sao Paulo and brought them back to London to sell to DJs like Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge. In recent years the track has been played out by the likes of Floating Points, Mr Scruff and Andrew Ashong, it was also the last song ever to play on the hallowed soundsystem of London’s beloved club Plastic People…

Only one copy per customer!Wicked reissue of this jazz rarity on Superfly, tip!The music on “A Spirit Speaks” is a treasure trove of classical African-American music -- It is a unique blend of heart moving, soul stirring Spirituals, Blues, and Jazz with layers of beautiful operatic vocals. One of the most unique albums on the Strata East label – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the creative energies flowing through that legendary jazz outlet! Descendents Of Mike & Phoebe is a righteous little project put together by Spike Lee's father, Bill Lee, and his brothers and sisters (Cliff Lee, Grace Lee Mims, and Consuela Lee Moorhead) – working here in a group named after their slave ancestors, who are paid tribute in a beautifully flowing batch of tunes! Lee's round, warm bass tones are firmly at the head of the group on most numbers – recorded at a similar level to his excellent work with Clifford Jordan on Strata East during the same time – and other instrumentation includes piano from Consuela, flugelhorn from Cliff, and percussion from Sonny Brown and Billy Higgins – all used in a wonderfully evocative style that's even better than some of Lee's later soundtrack work. A few numbers feature vocals from Grace – singing wordlessly and with a really heavenly sort of quality – and together, the whole group have a undeniable sense of power and majesty, yet also one that's touched by a really personal sense of poetry too. Titles include a great version of Lee's "Coltrane", which was more famously recorded with Clifford Jordan – plus "Chick Chick", "Attica", "Too Little, Too Late", "Boll Weevil", "Don't Be A Stranger", and "Well Done, Weldon".

Unearthed by groove archeologist Betino Errera, this black gem was cut in Paris in 1980 by American vocalist Robert Helms. His French career being rather confidential with releases under his own name as well as Bobby Helms or simply Bobby, the Lay Down Girl album remained a well-kept secret for decades despite the fact that it contained two very strong disco-funk tunes.Helms was backed by a seasoned studio band including Donny Donable (of Lafayette Afro Rock Band) on drums, Christophe Zadire (of Zulu Gang fame) on bass and Beckie Bell on backing vocals. The session was led by master musician Jacob Desvarieux on guitar, piano and synths, who was already at that time one of the founders of Kassav. These recordings were made under the supervision of Pierre Jaubert, who was a major player on the independent French production scene from the late 60s onward, operating his own studio, famous for also being a much appreciated meeting point for musicians. He is responsible for bringing forth works from legendary bluesmen like John Lee Hooker, Memphis Slim, Roosevelt Sykes and jazz greats including Mal Waldron, Archie Shepp and Charlie Mingus. But to funk lovers, Pierre Jaubert is mostly known for his involvement with the mythical Lafayette Afro Rock Band whose prominent breaks and riffs have been sampled by the most illustrious rappers including Public Enemy, De La Soul, Naughty by Nature, Digital Underground, Wu Tang Clan and Ice Cube to name just a few.Today, Betino's Records reissues two very sought after tracks from the original album: "Feet On The Ground", cowritten by Desvarieux and Helms and "Sekele I Like It", written by Desvarieux and Pasteur Lappe, the latter hailing from Cameroon was the first one to record the song in 1979. In addition, both tunes get the contemporary rework treatment. Baptman and Betino editing the vocals out of "Sekele I Like It" then turning it into a very danceable Philly inspired dub. For his part, DJ Vas digs the Afrobeat seam on "Feet On The Ground", thickens the sauce with thumping bass lines and adds an "Earth Wind & Fire" feel by putting the emphasis on the horn section. And last but not least, this 12inch pressing is limited to 700 copies worldwide.

But it was this album, originally self-released on cassette in 1986 that really caught our attention. The album, entirely recorded on DX-7 and TR-707, lies somewhere between digital new-age and (accidentally) early Detroit techno experiments. The inimitable style of BGC here is both peaceful and meditative while simultaneously rhythmic and bass heavy. The album was recorded in the northern Canadian town of Huntsville where BGC was living at the time and is a beautiful fusion of personal vision, technology and place.

The band recorded at Honolulu’s Broad Recording Studio, not long after Mike Lundy and Aura finished the final touches on their albums (both recently got the reissue treatment on Aloha Got Soul).Phase 7 was among the most successful disco bands in Hawaii during the mid-1970s. Originally founded by Van de Guzman and Hemingway Jasmin, the group consisted of the island’s top brass players and toured throughout the West Coast, Canada, and Hawaiian Islands.Their main gig was at the Infinity nightclub in the Sheraton Waikiki. Prior to Phase 7’s residency, the hotel had only ever hired mainland acts such as the Burgundy Express and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. This 7-inch was initially released in May 2017 on black vinyl as a collaborative release between Japan’s DJ Muro and Aloha Got Soul. The Japanese edition — released on DJ Muro & DJ Nori’s Captain Vinyl label — sold out in about a week. It was limited to 500 copies. This US-pressed version is available as a limited run of 500 copies on green vinyl. “So Good To Be In Love” is an uplifting Brazilian style disco-funk tune composed by Phase 7’s Les Fernandez. “Could It Be Love” mellows things out with an original soul groover written by bandmate Sandy Pascual. Full album reissue of Phase 7’s Playtime coming soon.

Soul Jazz Records’ new release ‘Soul of a Nation: Afro-Centric Visions in the Age of Black Power’ is released in conjunction with a major worldwide art exhibition, Soul of A Nation: Art in the The Age of Black Power which takes place at the Tate Modern, London, UK (July-Oct 2017) and The Brooklyn Museum, New York, USA.The album shows how the ideals of the civil rights movement, black power and black nationalism influenced the evolvement of radical African-American music in the United States of America in the intensely political and revolutionary period at the end of the 1960s following the assassinations of Malcolm X, Martin Luther King and the rise of the Black Panther party.Featuring groundbreaking artists such as Gil Scott-Heron, Roy Ayers, Don Cherry, Oneness of Juju, Sarah Webster Fabio, Horace Tapscott, Phil Ranelin and many others, Soul of A Nation shows how political themes led to the rise of ‘conscious’ black music as new afro-centric styles combined the musical radicalism and spirituality of John Coltrane and radical avant-garde jazz music alongside the intense funk and soul of James Brown and Aretha Franklin and the urban poetry and proto-rap of the streets. The Soul of a Nation exhibition draws on the links between Black art forms – art, music, poetry - and how they came together during the civil rights and black power era as part of the wider black arts movement across the United States.Iconic African-Amercian revolutionary figures such as Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Angela Davis, John Coltrane, Muhammad Ali all appear in the radical artworks of Barkley L. Hendricks, Romare Bearden, Norman Lewis, Lorraine O’Grady and Betye Saar.A selection of original radical jazz record sleeves artworks which appear in Soul Jazz Records’ earlier groundbreaking Freedom, Rhythm and Sound – Revolutionary Jazz Original Cover Art book will also be on show at the Tate, London throughout the exhibition. The Freedom, Rhythm and Sound book is also newly back-in-print in conjunction with this major exhibition and the release of the Soul of a Nation album.Stuart Baker (founder of Soul Jazz Records) will appear on the panel of Jazz for Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power discussion at the gallery as part of the show.Soul of a Nation comes with extensive sleeve-notes and exclusive photography in a large 36-page outsize booklet and slipcase. Double gatefold vinyl album edition comes with full colour inners + bonus download code and includes full sleeve-notes/photography.

The sole LP by Brazilian quartet Assim Assado, originally released in 1974 by the CID-label, gets reissued on vinyl. Both the artwork and the contents make clear that the band was massively influenced by the psychedelic/progressive art-rock of the popular act Secos & Molhados. Even the androgynous element is present! Assim Assado was led by Miguel de Deus, formerly of Os Brazoes. This wonderful album is recommended to fans of Brazil's late '60s/early '70s rock scene in general, and of Secos & Molhados in particular.

Ten years ago we were excited to release an archival collection of the sweetest soul from upstate New York in the 1960s, BOB & GENE’S IF THIS WORLD WERE MINE.... The beautifully packaged LP sold out quickly and has remained out-of-print ever since. It’s stature has grown over the years and is, these days, a desirable but hard-to-find record for fans of sweet soul.So to respond to the demand of soul fans worldwide we’re releasing a remastered pressing of IF THIS WORLD WAS MINE... for all of those who missed out on this sensational album the first time around, this time with TWO bonus cuts.In 1967, two teenage friends, Bobby Nunn and Eugene Copland, were the stars of Mo Do Records, a Buffalo, NY label run by Bobby’s dad, William Nunn. As BOB & GENE they recorded several sides for the label along with other local gospel and soul artists and the dozen or so 45s on Mo Do play back with unconventional humanity and anomalous presence.William’s dream of a Bob & Gene album would never be realised in his lifetime, but in February 2007 we jumped at the chance to pull together these sweet and soulful recordings into an album that’s remained a Daptone favorite ever since.A decade later and we’re thrilled that it’s back in the racks at your favorite purveyor of soulful platters.Remastered with two new songs not previously available on the original version, “I Really Love You” and “It’s Not What You Know (It’s Who You Know).”

Austin’s Brownout unleashed the “Brown Sabbath Vol. I” project garnering acclaim from outlets such as NPR (50 Best Albums of 2014), Pitchfork, hardcore Black Sabbath fans and most important of all Ozzy Osbourne himself, while staying true to their Latin Funk roots. Brown Sabbath Vol. II cranks up the level, rocking harder than the original with a brew of ballistic horns, pummeling guitar-riffs underscored by a funky, driving rhyhm section. Ghostland Observatory‘s Aaron Behrens makes a guest appearance sharing vocal duties with Brown Sabbath lead vocalist Alex Marrero. Hitting harder than its predecessor and keeping closely in line with the original Sabbath material, “Brown Sabbath Vol. II” crosses over more to hard rock territory. Brownout’s powerful, signature full horn section, dual-guitar attack, funked-up drums and latin percussion return with a vengeance, adding even more weight and texture to create a dark hybrid sound that resonates with groove-laden intensity unique to their interpretation of Black Sabbath’s tome. An 8-piece outfit formed ten years ago by members of Grammy Award-winning Latin revival orchestra Grupo Fantasma, Brownout has evolved into a musical force all its own. With a succesful tour of “Brown Sabbath” under their belt including Bonnaroo and Austin Psych Fest while earning their third Austin Music Award, the band has continued to produce music that is unflinchingly progressive, while evoking the classic influences of artists such as WAR, Cymande and Funkadelic. Brownout now has four albums under their belt including “Brown Sabbath Vol. I” (Ubiquity 2014), “Homenaje” (Freestyle Records 2008), “Aguilas & Cobras” (Six Degrees 2009) and “Oozy” (Nat Geo 2012).

Strangelove Music is delighted to present its first project, two songs from Lena d'Água, one of Portugal’s great musical acts of the early 1980’s.From the ashes of art pop band Salada de Frutas, Lena rose as the first prominent female bandleader in Portugal. Combining a siren presence and soaring vocals alongside songwriter Luis Fonseca and backing band Atlântida, they released a series of records that wove through the avante-pop sensibilities of the time.Collected here are two of their more leftfield moments; ‘Jardim Zoológico’ compresses a beguiling mix of new wave, post punk and dub into a short sharp pop format, impossible to properly categorize, the dynamic composition sounding as fresh now as it did 35 years ago.On the flipside, the calmer ‘Tao’ takes Fonseca’s keyboards towards more eastern territory, conjuring up a dreamy synthesized new age vibe. Lena’s beautiful fado hued notes hang poignantly across both songs.Beautifully re-mastered by reissue specialist Peter Beckmann!

The stories of great high school funk bands are, thanks to an abundance of reissues, commonplace. The tales of great high school soul-bands are still rare. Aballad or two on the random Douglass High School Stage Band album or Timeless Legend’s mesmerizing entry on Columbus’s 1972 1st Annual Inner City Talent Expo notwithstanding, high school bands rarely struck into the realm of “grown folks”music. Enter The Equatics and their brooding masterpiece "Doin’ It!!!!"If this is categorized as a “funk” album – and it was for the last ten years, by those few lucky enough to own an original copy – it holds its own. But it was as a soulband, one as inspired by the melancholic musings of Bill Withers as the psychedelic-pop of the self-proclaimed “Black Moses,” Issac Hayes – that theEquatics shone. These young souls offered world-weary, beat-heavy ballads that stand on par with any of the great independent organizations of the early 1970s.That a group of teenagers could offer such an angst-ridden plea as that of Leo Davis’s “Merry Go Round” not only transcends the limitations that came from theband’s average age (seventeen, at the time of the album’s recording), but also the barriers the stood in front of this group of small-city hopefuls. This official reissue was licensed by the Equatics' bandleader, bass player Benjamin Crawford.

Only one copy per customer!Martinique is an island in the Lesser Antilles, a group of islands in the Caribbean Sea found between the Greater Antilles (Jamaica, Cuba, and Puerto Rica) to the north-west and the continent of South America to the south. Martinique is one of the eighteen regions of France (there are five overseas regions) and an integral part of the French Republic. As part of France, Martinique is also part of the European Union, and its currency is the Euro. The official language is French, and virtually the entire population speaks Antillean Creole. It was first claimed by France in 1635 under the reign of King Louis XIII.Located geographically closer to the United States than to Europe, the Antilles absorbed jazz and mixed it with the traditional rhythms of their islands: the Biguine, Gwo Ka, Tumbélé. Many artists over the years have explored this uniquely affecting mix: D’Alexandre Stellio, Jean-Claude Montredon, Al Lirvat, Acques Coursil and Mario Caning. But one of the best exemplars of this fusing of American jazz and the Antillean musical tradition was pianist and composer Marius Cultier. Marius Cultier was born in 1942 in Fort-de-France, Martinique. A precocious talent for an early age, at nine he conducted with the L'Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision Fançaise, the French national public broadcasting organisation. As a young man, Cultier hosted a radio show, ‘Punch en Musique,’ which proved a hit with the public and his name and reputation slowly built. Tragedy struck him at 14 when he was orphaned and he was looked after by this elder sister. As tragic as 1956 proved for Cultier, it was to be a watershed year for another reason - it was the year he discovered jazz. It wasn’t long before he was fusing the musical styles and language of the West Indies with jazz and he began live performances at the Hôtel l’Impératrice.Very quickly Cultier became an in-demand concert attraction in Martinique and venue owners soon began to book him across the island. His reputation grew and before long he was also performing across the Caribbean. As his stature grew, he began to receive accolades and prizes, including the International Piano Conquest prize in Puerto Rico for his performance of "Round Midnight”.He went to Canada in 1966 - initially for a few weeks - where he stayed for several years. Whilst there he met and played with established jazz artists before continuing his journey in the United States, and then Europe, where he played in Paris at the Palais des Congrès at the invitation of the then President, Valérie Giscard D’Estaing, before returning to Martinique in 1973.This release is pressed on heavyweight vinyl. The cover is presented on original glued prints on thick cardboard in a PVC outer sleeve.

Bene’s World is Benedek’s second Leaving Records release, following last year’s Coolin’ EP as well as a full-length debut on the influential Peoples Potential Unlimited label. His catalogue also includes collaborations with Dam-Funk, Delroy Edwards and Tom Noble. Recorded between his Koreatown studio and the West LA home he grew up in, Bene’s World captures the characteristically-LA mingling of urban action and canyon seclusion.Born and bred in Los Angeles, Benedek began pulling inspiration from the city’s structural and visual dichotomies at a young age. He picked up a guitar at 9 years-old, taking note of any and all sonic surroundings, from prevalent West Coast G-funk to the synthesized sound effects in video games to a Herbie Hancock record pulled from his dad’s collection. Amongst a complex set of influences, funk took a hold on his heart by high school. Brazil has always had its own brand of musical virtuosity, one that combined a distinctive and innate rhythmic swing with an effortless ability to turn seemingly abstract riffs into ridiculously catchy hooks. In the late '60s and '70s when these talented players in Rio and Sao Paolo turned their focus towards the North American funk scene and bands like Kool & the Gang, the Meters and the JBs, a new element was added to the mix. As the more polished sound exemplified by Quincy Jones and CTI Records took hold, Brazilian musicians red right back with their own distinct twist on the sound, one that inevitably revolved around a rhythm section laying down grooves that were both the tightest and the most supple imaginable. If that combination seems paradoxical, this collection will make the notion clear. Culled from the times no vocalist was claiming the spotlight, these instrumentals focus firmly on the rhythm section and its funky accompaniment, a journey through the '70s heyday of instrumental funk from Brazil from its rawest roots to refined boogie gems.

Late Night Tales introduces a tangent to the timeline of the esteemed artist curated compilation series with ‘After Dark’: a DJ led, club focused mix which – as expert compiler Bill Brewster describes – “is dance music for people who know how to make love”. After Dark. It’s New York at 4am with the lights off and the strobes flaring. It’s a Dalston basement with slow chugging basslines propelling a dancefloor. It’s a starlit night on the coast of Croatia with glittery girls and burnished boys grooving to 110bpm anthems. It’s great dance music with the Bosh-O-Meter turned to 0. If you want pounding trance, Lance, you’ve come to the wrong place. If you want a drop, break or explosion every 16 bars, then Swedish House Mafia is that way. This is music for dancers who know to move. It’s slow release carbs, with a startlingly high pleasure count. We’re starting slow and staying that way. Groove is in the art. Unearthed gems include a brilliant Padded Cell mix of the Doves that’s thus far remained in the CD wallets of the lucky few, a previously unreleased remix of the magnificent Twin Sister, TBS ft. Jamalski, a brilliantly off the wall Joakim production, plus the rare-as-hen’s-teeth mega disco tune ‘Love The Way You Love Me’ by Yorkshire’s finest diva-comic Marti Caine.

It's time for another 7" foot-stomping bonanza from Rocafort Records, digging deep into the rich New Orleans repertoire of the Carbo family. All brothers were heavily involved in the 60s Crescent City funk scene, so tight and 'on the one' that it's easy to understand why Hank suspects a bit of plagiarism from the Godfather himself."Fox in a mini skirt" is slice of soulful cheek and attitude, based on foxy beauty who once slunk across the dance floor at one of his gigs. Popular on the Northern Soul scene, it matches vocal urgency with a driving beat fuelled along by manic drums, guitars and horns. The irresistible background hey hey hey's and funky funky broadway's make it instantly memorable and immediately danceable."Bad Luck" (not to be confused with the Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes classic) is a slower paced funk stinker, screaming out JB horns and wah wah guitars à la 'Ain't it funky now'. In keeping with the depth of New Orleans songwriting, the lyrics are worth a listen and reveal a heartfelt plea "If it weren't for bad luck, I wouldn't have no luck at all". In fact, the whole song is based on a spell of unfortunate circumstances involving Hank's sideswiped new car and an erroneous warrant for his arrest. However, the only real crime committed here is that at 2'22", this track is shockingly over too soon!

In 1988, on the eve of a two decade civil war, Somalia's authoritarian ruler Siad Barre launched punishing air strikes on the north of the country, known today as Somaliland, in response to agitations for independence. The bombing leveled the entire city. Barre targeted Radio Hargeisa to prevent any kind of central communication system that could organize a resistance. With the attack imminent, a few brave radio operators and dedicated vanguards of Somali culture knew the archives, containing over half a century of Somali music had to be preserved. Thousands upon thousands of cassette tapes and master reels were quickly removed from the soon-to-be targeted buildings. They were dispersed to neighboring countries like Djibouti and Ethiopia, and buried deep under the ground to withstand even the most powerful airstrikes."We buried them in the ground so the bomb's won't hit," one former leading journalist with Radio Hargeisa told us.These audio artifacts were excavated and recalled from their foreign shelters only very recently. Some of those recordings are now kept safe in the 10,000-strong cassette tape archive of the Red Sea Foundation, the largest collection of Somali cassettes in the world, in Somaliland's capital, Hargeisa. The Ostinato Records team digitized a large portion of the archive, distilling 15 songs that reveal the panoramic diversity of styles and sophistication of Somali musicianship.Over a millennia of trade in the Indian Ocean invited the cultures of the Arabian Peninsula, Persia, India, Southeast Asia, and even China to slowly work their melodies, scales, and sounds into Somalia's rich musical repertoire. Each track is a keen illustration of a carefully refined, rarely revealed cultural crossroads of the world. The archive offered a living window to the Mogadishu of the 1970s and 1980s, when the coastal capital glistened as the "Pearl of the Indian Ocean," when wine flowed freely. With its iconic ivory-colored architecture and crescent beaches overlooking the Indian Ocean, Mogadishu was home to the lavish Al Uruba and Jazira sea side hotels, where youthful bands like Iftiin, Sharero, and Dur Dur serenaded cosmopolitan crowds at some of the most elegant nightclubs in East Africa. These damaged cassettes evoked memories of the revered national theater, where Waaberi Band provided unforgettable soundtracks. Mogadishu's nightlife culture was rich and booming. Raucous rhythms, rugged horns, celestial synthesizers, and stalking baselines came alive alongside majestic voices like Mahmud "Jerry" Hussen and powerful and adored female singers like Faadumo Qaasim, Hibo Nuura, and Sahra Dawo. Somali music of this era is set apart by its empowerment of women. Female singers, often more prolific than their male counterparts, are inseparable from its evolution. Half the compilation is sung by women, their voices often compared in Somali poetry to the sweetness of broken dates. Poetry, intrinsic to the cultural fabric, forms the foundation of Somali songwriting.Somali music's golden age, curiously, occurred under a socialist military dictatorship, which effectively nationalized the music industry. A thriving scene was owned entirely by the state. Music was recorded for and by national radio stations and only disseminated through public broadcasts or live performances. Private labels were virtually non-existent. This music was never made available for mass release. Almost all recorded material came from original masters or homemade recordings of radio broadcasts. As a result, most of it has never been heard outside Somalia and the immediate region.During the Cold War, Somalia drifted between Soviet and American support — and a decade of U.S. backing allowed soul and funk to capture the imagination of Somali youth, adding the final touch on this masterpiece era. This project took our team to Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Djibouti, and across the Somali diaspora in Europe, the United States, and the Middle East. For the last year, from Minnesota to Mogadishu to Malaysia, we have tracked down the musicians, songwriters, composers, former government officials, and quirky personalities that colored Somali music life. Their words and stories are revealed in a 15,000-word liner note booklet — the only document of its kind to cover this era of Somali music in depth.Alongside the story of Somalia's music before the civil war, the selection is also focused on the pan-Somali sound. Spread over much of the Horn of Africa, Somali language and culture transcend arbitrary borders. Somali singers from Djibouti were at home in Mogadishu. This compilation seeks to revive the rightful image, history, and identity of the Somali people, detached from war, violence, piracy, and the specter of a persistent threat. These 15 tracks should serve as a necessary starting point.

In the early 1970s, the collective known as The California Playboys was the backing band for R&B singer Lester Young (not to be confused with the jazz saxophonist of same name) on a series of singles, before recording their sole album under their own name, „Trying To Become A Millionaire“.The instrumental precision of „Trying To Become A Millionaire“ is immediately evident; clearly the product of a group of seasoned session musicians. Incorporating Latin music elements, pre-disco rhythms, bouncy funk bass lines and seamlessly clean guitar, the album calls to mind the music of Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers and Bobbi Humphrey. Depending on the track, the vocal delivery is at times reminiscent of Bobby Womack, Donny Hathaway or even Marvin Gaye, but all provide a complimentary gravity and substance to the flawless instrumentals. The album was never repressed or reissued since its initial run on the San Francisco-based label Loadstone in 1976. As a result, it has become incredibly sought-after in the ensuing years. Original vinyl copies, when they even appear, have been known to sell for $1,000 or more among collectors. For the first time in nearly 40 years, Manufactured Recordings presents this highly coveted soul treasure on LP to a new audience of fans.

Les Sourdes Oreilles (Deaf Ears), is the next generation analog cinematic music from the 21st century. Following the sound of 70's cinematic jazz funk, this first 300 copies from Cosmic Analog Ensemble is the new My Bags emergency hammer glass breaker.Designed like a 70's movie soundtrack Graal, with the perfect hijacking artwork of Jerk 45, the album is a future now crate digging target. Built like a narrative scenario, scene after scene, each composition deploys his uniqueness, from the explosives intense actions of "Camille 3000", moments of suspense with "Sol Sur Sol", to running chase on "En Faction" and flying panoramic views of "Point De Bascule"... the compositions are depicting a rich range of situations, moods and intrigue.Brilliantly composed, produced and interpreted by Charif Megarbane, playing himself all instruments, track after track, each song is a one man piece of art. Chiseled drum breaks, evocative bass and stirring melodies are a part of a bigger plan, sprinkled with subtle sound effects.Les Sourdes Oreilles is a long artisanal goldsmith work, cooking occidental classic jazz-funk tradition into an afro oriental kitchen. It's what makes this release so awesome, unique and necessary to our deaf ears.

One of the most pivotal figures in the history of Malian music is Sorry Bamba. His work spans five decades and his music bridges the gap between Mali's cultural traditions and new the music which arose from the musical cross overs which occurred in Mali's post-Colonial period. Bamba was born in 1938 in Mopti. This is dissected by both the Niger and Bani rivers and known for its rich cultural diversity. Bamba's father was a distinguished veteran of Emperor Samory Toure's military and a nobleman in Malian society; however, this meant young Sorry was forbidden to make music, as under the nation's caste system, music was an art form reserved for the Griots. At the age of 10, Sorry's parents died and in traumatic times that followed the young teen found solace in music. He first taught himself to play am African six-holed flute. As he progressed he began to absorbed the rich tapestry of music of his surroundings; traditional Malian music, highlife from Ghana, local accordion master Toumani Toure, European singers and musicians. In 1957 Sorry formed his first band, Group Goumbe, named after a popular Ivory Coast dance style. In 1960 Mali gained independence from France, Bamba and his group benefited from a new openness toward local music on the state-run radio network Radio Mali. Sorry then went on to form two award-winning, further collectives Bani Jazz and later the Kanaga Orchestra. They fused Latin jazz, Western R&B, Psychedelic and funk, and traditional Malian styles made them a favourite in Mali and beyond. In 1977 Sorry produced his second LP for the Paris based Sonafric group. Long out of print Africa Seven is pleased to be re-issuing the LP. The re-issue benefits from extensive restoration and re-mastering to a spectral analysis level, bringing and polishing long lost and distorted sounds.

Bosq’s new 45 rpm single sees him diving deeper into funky disco, creating songs that are more musical but maintain the rawness that translates to a feeling on the dancefloor. The A-side features a collaboration between Bosq and vocalist Megan Doherty from Social Lovers which has already garnered a “tune of the month” feature and a 10/10 rating from Mixmag. Mark Usher’s funk-laden rhythm guitar attack punctuates the song while Megan’s silky smooth vocal delivery glide on top of the Bosq-crafted groove with an understated cool and sexiness that permeate the entire track. The featured vocalist on the flip of this double A-side disco burner is none other than soul-highness herself Nicole Willis, who was featured on Bosq’s previous single “Bad For Me”. Her powerful vocal style reminiscent of disco divas past along with Mark channeling his inner “Nile Rodgers” delivers yet another future dancefloor classic. Calling Medellin, Colombia home for the time being, these 2 tracks were the last songs Bosq made in his US studio. Seeking inspiration and surrounded by a new landscape literally and musically while finding new partners to collaborate with on projects such as Body Music with The Rapture’s drummer Vito Roccoforte he continues to hone his craft. Along with dropping the Tumbala EP on Soul Clap, the full-length album San Jose 51 recorded in Puerto Rico with the Candela All-Stars and his various remix work for Fania, and Cultures Of Soul to name a few, Bosq’s relentless work ethic, output and openness to further develop his sound can only mean good things for Latin, Afro, Disco, Funk, and Soul aficionados alike.

Erstmals erschien die LP "Vamonos/Let’s Go" 1970 beim kleinen, in Chicago ansässigen Label Futuro.

The Numero Group’s dive into the deep end of America’s private press continues. Having battled the witches and wizards of Darkscorch, the outlaws of Cosmic Americana, and traveled alongside Ladies From the Canyon and their Lonesome Heroes, it’s time to take it easy. With pop music’s volume knob adjusted for deflation in the early ‘70s, softness begat smoothness. Crewmen arrived from the worlds of jazz, folk, rock, and soul, all peddling a product that was sincere, leisurely, and lofty. A sound that was buoyant, crisp, defined. Sometimes classified as West Coast—and, later, Yacht Rock—the compass points of our Private Yacht expedition are the blue-eyed harmonies of Hall and Oates, the cocaine-dusted Fender Rhodes of Michael McDonald, and the combover strums of James Taylor. Here, at the glassy apex of rock’s softer side, 20 strong swimmers are gathered together. An album for both relaxation and reflection, where listeners can enjoy the present, a cool breeze, and a taste of the good life.

Even half a Mal is more greatness than many people out there could take. Mel Waldron was another 1950s master of hard bop jazz and finds himself in illustrious company on his 1957 debut album. John Coltrane and Sahib Shihab are masters of tenor and alto saxophone and jazz freaks break into a sweat of joy when they hear these names. Coltrane alone could be a reason to fall in love with this record. You can always hear his very original kind of playing the tenor. No wonder that first pressings of this gem of an album go for 250 USD and even more in fine conditions. It might be a lesser known participation of the great John Coltrane with another bandleader but as he glows permanently on this album the rest of the musicians do the same. The band goes full throttle when needed but there are also thought provoking slow tunes generating an atmosphere of melancholy when Waldron makes his piano sing a dark ballad while the drummer barely stands out and just backs up the whole composition with a low key beat linked to the equally reluctant bass line. Trumpet and tenor come in play after a while to moan wearily on top of that reduced rhythmical pattern. Dark and smoke filled bars in a nameless American metropolis are exactly, what associate with these haunting melodies. And out of a sudden the band gains pace and the whole atmosphere becomes more and more cheerful. The grooves are swinging and good for a dance or two. The leading instruments alto sax, tenor sax and trumpet chatter frolicsome like a bunch of youngsters on a night out in town. These changes of atmosphere are one of the strong points of this record. Another is the overall tight interplay of all instruments. These cats were hard-nosed veterans of the jazz genre taking the 1940s dance club sounds to another level. Bebop turns into hard bop and this album shows the dignity in such a crystal clear way.

Limited to 500 copies.A big band adventure from half a century ago. The outstanding quartet with Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski and Wojciech Karolak in unknown radio sessions.A legendary quartet active in the 60s, made up of the leading Polish jazz musicians: Andrzej Dąbrowski, Roman Dyląg (or Juliusz Sandecki), Wojciech Karolak and Jan Ptaszyn-Wróblewski, left behind it only one album in the Polish Jazz series. It recorded more, however, and the sessions recorded in the years 1964-66, with an extended, big band line-up, appear on this album after a half-century wait. This is superb, swinging jazz of the highest calibre! The varied, brilliant compositions of Ptaszyn-Wróblewski and Karolak, as well as a few surprising interpretations of pre-war hits in a jazzy entourage. The quartet is accompanied by musicians of the radio’s Studio M-2 under the direction of Bogusław Klimczuk. The material has been re-mastered from the original radio tapes. The booklet includes colourful recollections by Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski.

After years of gigging around the east Nigerian music scene, Foundars 15 finally hit the jackpot when they recruited legendary bass player, Marshall Udo. Charismatic and confident, Udo immediately energised the band, bringing a new funky and psychedelic vibe as well as a bunch of songs he’d workshopped with the Funkees. The tone of the album is set early. Nek Adirika’s searing guitar lick announces ‘We Are On The Move’, a track that is both funky and determined. ‘Co-operation’ is a horn-driven slab of ghetto funk. ‘Cool and Good (For Love)’ is a psychedelic wig-out. ‘Work To Success’ could well be the new-look Foundars 15 manifesto set to music. While Marshall Udo was undoubtedly the catalyst, Co-operation is very much a group effort. Udo, Sony Enang, Nek Adirika and Ike Peters each provide songs and the musicianship of each player is impeccable. Every track is super-tight and sophisticated. This is the sound of a band that means business. It’s also why Co-operation is widely regarded as one of the great Afro-Funk rock albums of all time. - Peter Moore

Danny Offia’s Funk With Me is a prime slab of Nigerian Boogie. Sinewy and urbane, it’s the soundtrack of Lagos in the early eighties. The city was awash with oil money, clubs were booming and every night was a party night – the perfect place for a man with a great voice, a white suit and seductively-clutched packet of B&H Golds. Funk With Me was recorded in London with a crack team of session musicians. Drummer Blair Cunningham was from Memphis and had played with Robert Johnson. Sax player Ray Carless was regarded as the London jazz scene’s best-kept secret. Engineer Duncan Bridgeman would go on to work with Duran Duran. Danny Offia brought the songs and the Lagos attitude. ‘Funk With Me’ is a certified party starter. ’10 Years In Love’ and ‘Weak For You’ are sophisticated groovers. ‘Sat Nite (Is A Party Nite)’ is guaranteed to get any girl on the dancefloor, while ‘Don’t Make Me Cry’ is smooth enough take her home. Funk With Me is Lagos in an album – cosmopolitan, sexy and witty with an energy and spirit, all of its own. - Peter Moore

William Onyeabor wasn’t the only Nigerian experimenting with synthesizers in the 70s and 80s. Goldfinger Doe was twiddling knobs too, no more so than on Let’s Dance Together – a prime slab of cosmic Afro boogie funk, recorded with legendary percussionist, Mike Umoh (a.k.a B.M.S.) Goldfinger met Umoh playing with Bongos Ikwue & The Groovies. Bass player Bashiru Musa, was a fellow Groovie too, and when the three hit the studio to record Let’s Dance Together, the groove was already tight and hot. The title track, ‘Let’s Dance Together’, is an urgent boogie monster, peppered with cosmic synths. ‘Funky Africa’ is an irresistible floor-filler, driven by the ‘funk in the black soil and the soul in the air.’ ‘Jah Help Us’ is a reggae-tinged reworking of the Lord’s Prayer, with added squelchy synth. ‘B.M.S. Bowl’? It’s just an excuse for Umoh to show off his preposterous percussive skills. Goldfinger’s extraordinary synth skills are always front and centre. They transform ‘Jane’, providing a humorous commentary in an otherwise straightforward romantic lament, and propel the funkier tracks to become the heartbeat of the album. Let’s Dance Together is an Afro Funk space ship, fuelled up and ready to take off. - Peter Moore

The 1970s in Nigeria were an age when mighty bands walked the earth. In Lagos, afro-rock stalwarts such as BLO and Monomono ruled the roost, eastwards, it was deeply funky groups like The Funkees, The Apostles and The Friimen. Up north you had soulful ensembles such as The Elcados and The Moonrakers. And in the southeast, you had Foundars 15.Foundars 15 were not the only rock band operating in the southern city of Port Harcourt, but they were without question the tightest and most eclectic not just in Port Harcourt but perhaps in Nigeria as a whole. Formed initially as an army band in the wake of the Nigerian civil war of 1967-1970, Foundars 15 released a string of singles in the early seventies, followed by four albums of heavy, jittery funk-rock between 1976 and 1978 before splitting up to pursue solo careers.1977’s Fire Woman is perhaps the finest (and rarest) of Foundars 15’s albums, offering a spicy buffet of groovy pop, reggae, native rock and dense, off-kilter funk. Long sought after by aficionados, Fire Woman has been an LP that is more often heard about than actually heard. That is about to change.Comb & Razor Sound is proud to present a new, fully-authorized reissue of Fire Woman, featuring eight crucial cuts representing the gold standard of the golden age of Nigerian pop music. Here’s your chance to catch the fire!

Awareness is Buddy Terry’s first album for Mainstream Records out of the three he recorded for Bob Shad’s label. This is pure undiluted spiritual jazz both deep and funky. Prior to that Terry had recorded a couple of soul jazz albums for Prestige Record, “Electric Soul” in 1967 and “Natural Soul” in 1968. He then went under the radar until the recording of this album, an undisputed buried treasure Wewantsounds is delighted to reissue. 1971 saw him picked up by the ever active Bob Shad who had just decided to produce a new crop of young jazzmen in tune with the sonic revolution of the time with John coltrane’s Eastern influences and Miles Davis’ experiments drawned from the music Jimi Hendrix and Sly Stone. Awareness is a pure result of this incredible blend which saw labels like Black Jazz or Strata East transform jazz into a hip and cool genre adorned by the Woodstock generation. Featuring a glittering line up composed of Strata East co-founder Stanley Cowell on piano and Rhodes, Cecil Bridgewater on Trumpet, Buster Williams and Victor Gaskin on bass, Roland Prince on guitar, Mickey Roker on drums and a young Mtume on percussion. Together they play a superb mix of deep and funky jazz in the best tradition of the genre. Both hypnotic (Kamili) and funky (check Cowell signature tune Abscretions), the album is a pure delight graced by Shad’s tight production values. It will ravish all lovers of early 70s spiritual jazz. Buddy Terry recorded another two great albums for Mainstream and played on Art Blakey superb Child’s Dance from 1972 gracing the record with his wonderful soprano sax playing. A great player worth (re)discovering. This release will be augmented by never-seen session photos by Raymond Ross as two CD bonuses in the form of two single versions of “Babylon” and “Stealin’ Gold” well as new liner notes by French journalist Jacques Denis (Liberation/Superfly).This releases is housed in a beautiful gatefold cover.

Recorded in 1971, this beautiful Harold Land record produced by Bob Shad, is nothing but a Harold Land – Bobby Hutcherson Quintet album in disguise. The quintet recorded a handful of marvelous albums between 1967 and 1971 mainly under the Bobby Hutcherson name on Blue Note but they recorded one album on Chess and two for Mainstream. A New Shade of Blue recorded in Los Angeles where the quintet was based is one of their best albums and has never been reissued before except in Japan. Featuring a superb line up comprising Buster Williams on Bass and Billy Hart on Drums - the rhythm section of Herbie Hancock’s Mwandishi Sextet – the session is augmented by Bill Henderson on Piano and Fender Rhodes and Mtume on percussion. Together they create a superb soundscape featuring the quintet’s trademark sound, both spiritual and serene, with Land’s unmistakable sax playing and Bobby Hutcherson modal touch. The highlight of the album is the long hypnotic track “Mtume”, a deep, slow burner displaying the group’s fantastic interplay. For the first time ever the album will be reunited with the beautiful 8 min outtake “Dark Mood” which was briefly issued in 1974 on a Mainstream compilation. The release will also be crammed with unissued session photo taken by LA photographer Dick Sanders and will feature new liner notes by radio DJ and renowned digger Sam Barbatano (Sunday Jazz, KTRU Houston). This releases is housed in a beautiful gatefold cover.
