Before there was War there was Señor Soul, which saxophonist/flutist Charles Miller formed in Long Beach, California; he played on Brenton Wood sessions for Double Shot, who released their loose interpretation of Miriam Makeba’s ‘Pata Pata,’ the hit that led to this blinding debut LP. Blending funk, Latin jazz and psychedelic soul, the group makes a range of material their own, led by Miller and vibraphonist Edwin Stevenson; everything from Heard It Through The Grapevine to Psychotic Reaction gets the Señor Soul treatment, rendered with equal doses of sensitivity, humour and funky flavour. Long before Miller recruited members of Nightshift to morph Señor Soul into War, this top-notch debut is a stone-cold winner from first note to last, a must-have for all funk and Latin jazz afficionados.

Amazing solo piano from the master himself, Horace Tapscott… Recorded 1982-1985 during 2am sessions in an empty Lobero Theatre in Santa Barbara, Ca. … haunting, beautiful, essential. 7LP SET Only 500 of these sets were pressed

Please be aware, this is not in a box

Sealed original copies of the Horace Tapscott's 'The Tapscott Sessions' solo piano series, released on Nimbus West Records from 1982 to 1984. Horace Tapscott has been one of the top "unknown" jazz pianists in the Los Angeles area since the 1960s, recording far too few sessions which has led to him being continually overlooked by jazz fans from outside L.A. During 1982-84 he recorded seven solo piano albums for the tiny Nimbus label, playing unaccompanied solos, his improvisations consist of deeply emotional exploration of his music. Tapscott has always had a strikingly original sound that, despite occasional hints at other pianists, is quite distinctive, falling between advanced hard bop and the avant-garde. Totally Essential.

Jazz, with its many iterations and forms, has always been a music on the move - its own changes and evolutions mirroring a flux in the perception of what is and was. This is all too evident when addressing its avant-garde realisations, particularly those rising across the 1960s and 70s - free and spiritual - musics which were both of their moment and beyond them - of a specific people, culture, social reality, philosophy, and political position, while transcending each. These radical sounds have rarely received the wide understanding, recognition, and appreciation in their own time. Thankfully, we have have hindsight. Historical Avant-garde jazz, springing from African American communities and taking seed in every corner of the globe, is increasingly celebrated for the seminal music is was and remains, but there’s still plenty of work to be done, especially when addressing the long standing rift in the United States which favours the east coast over the west.

Holly Cole's Temptation 45 RPM 200-gram 4LP reissue!

· Mastered by Bernie Grundman from the original analogue master tape

· Pressed at Quality Record Pressings

· Old-style tip-on jackets by Stoughton Printing

· Housed in a custom slipcase box

Over the past decades, new talents such as Cassandra Wilson, Patricia Barber, and Holly Cole have redefined the world of female jazz vocals. Cole's Temptation, a 1995 Blue Note release, is her musical tribute to the writings of Tom Waits. Besides being a superb audiophile recording (perfect in every production detail, from the rendering of Cole's amazing voice to the incredibly natural sound captured by producer Craig Street's team), this album has garnered kudos for her interpretation of Waits' unique compositions.

How does it get any better? Well, this edition is cut at 45 RPM! The dead-quiet 4LP set, with the music spread over eight sides of vinyl, reduces distortion and high frequency loss as the wider-spaced grooves let your stereo cartridge track more accurately.

Standouts include a catchy version of "Jersey Girl," which made it onto a number of radio playlists, and a rendition of "The Briar and the Rose," brilliantly augmented by the Canadian Brass. Also included are "Take Me Home," "Train Song," "Temptation," "Falling Down," "Invitation to the Blues," "Frank's Theme," "Little Boy Blue," "I Don't Wanna Grow Up," "Tango 'til They're Sore," "The Heart of Saturday Night," "Soldiers Things," "I Want You" and "Good Old World."

Analogue Productions has gone all out for this revealing new reissue. Exquisite sonic detail is captured on this 200-gram Quality Record Pressings LP, bringing out the exemplary mastering job for this 45 RPM edition by Bernie Grundman in Los Angeles. Top it off with old-style tip-on jackets by Stoughton Printing, all in a custom slipcase box, and you'll be proud to add this one to your collection.

BBE Music present the latest in the acclaimed J Jazz Masterclass Series: Kohsuke Mine ‘First’, the debut album by one of the leading artists in the new wave of modern jazz that swept Japan in the late 60s and early 70s. ‘First’ epitomises the shifting sound of the Japanese modern jazz scene of the time, characterised by rich textures and tones, kinetic rhythms, punctuated by urgent, angular melody lines.

Reissued for the first time since original 1970 release, Mine is joined by master keyboard player Masabumi Kikuchi on electric piano, and two American players – bassist Larry Ridley and drummer Lenny McBrowne – to deliver one of the strongest debuts in the J Jazz canon. ‘First’ announced the arrival of a serious talent, one who was to be a hugely influential figure in the Japanese jazz scene across the decade that followed and beyond. ‘First’ established an artist who built a reputation for standout albums spanning spiritual jazz, post-bop, modal and funk-fusion. All of that started here, on this exemplary album.

‘First’ is issued on CD, digital and vinyl. The vinyl edition is presented as a double album, cut at 45rpm by the Grammy-nominated Carvery, with full original reproduction artwork, including obi strip. Both CD and vinyl comes with a 4500 word sleeve note and interview with Kohsuke Mine by Tony Higgins, plus artist portraits by Shigeru Uchiyama.

After NEF's album in 2019, Ici Bientôt is happy to present today the reissue of Comme Au Moulin by Nyssa Musique. Paris 1985... ‘Extra-European’ Traditions meet Jazz and Minimal Music. An unusual array of instruments turn music into a dialogue. For a unique record ... vivid, full of texture, somewhere between Midori Takada, Don Cherry and Jon Hassell. Beginning of the eighties, 5 musicians rehearse in a contemporary dance class hall, upstairs from the ‘’New Morning", renowned Music venue in Paris. Nyssa Musique is born. Passionate for a long time about traditional music, like those of the Middle East, India and East Asia, but also about African traditions, they throw a bridge between Jazz and ‘Extra-European’ traditions, resulting in what would be called "Spiritual Jazz" today, a little bit in the style of Don Cherry's Organic Music or Pharoah Sanders. With the notable difference, however, that their creations are strongly infused by contemporary classical and repetitive music, notably Steve Reich's work with whom they share a great interest for the traditional cultures of Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia and its gamelans. In the original group we have Armand Amar, Ballet Music composer and John Boswell. Both specialists of traditional hand percussion which they had been studying for a long time in India and the Middle East, they are also very fond of synthesizers. Three other talented musicians quickly join them: Jean-François Roger, percussionist, marimba and vibraphone specialist, Henri Tournier, multi-flutist and Renaud Garcia-Fons, double bass player, who has a passion for the Middle East and has developed a virtuosic play of the bow, reminding that of Cecil Mc Bee. Each of them enriches the ensemble with their personality, originality and musical generosity. The rehearsal hall is rapidly invaded by the phenomenal instrumentarium put together by Armand Amar. A great opportunity for the musicians, for the dancers, to have access to an endless choice of instruments, offering infinite possibilities for mixing different colors and timbres. Their sense for being a group and their great capacity for improvising culminates, in 1985, in the composition of their first and only album Comme au Moulin (« As by the windmill"), testimony of years of creating without hidden agenda. Authentic, free and vibrant, still today, this album has no real equivalent. Even though it recalls the Fourth World current by its combination of traditional instruments with a subtle use of synthesizers, Comme au moulin gives more space to improvisation. It may also recall those of Midori Takada, less the New Age esthetics. An album that should delight as well lovers of "Love Supreme" by John Coltrane, of "Vernal Equinox" by Jon Hassell, as those of Moondog, an artist who, like them, invented a music based on the use of untypical percussions, at the confluence of 'Extra-European' traditions, Jazz and Classical, all together complex and hypnotic.

Legendo Is A Work Of Sonic Weird Fiction. A Pulp Fantasy. A Descent Through The Cracks In Reality, Punctuated By Bizarre Encounters And Freaky Transformations. It Oozes An Odd Mixture Of Wonder And Fear, A Fascination With Whatever Might Be Lurking Around The Next Unlit Corner, Met With Relentless Excitement And Leading Towards Ghastly Discoveries. Like A Vision Of A New Mythological Age, One That Aims More At Subverting And Making Fun Of Itself Than Educating Towards Any Kind Of Morality. Or A Self-Conscious Fantasy Rpg Turning Into A Full-On Immersive Experience. The Author, Lubomir Grzelak Aka Lutto Lento, Arranged This Eccentric Narrative As A Follow Up To His Previous Lp, The Ominous Dark Secret World, While Also Settling Out To Subvert The Atmosphere Of That Record. In His Haunter Debut He Embraces His Own Quirkier Side, Delving Further Into Eerie Derision And Surreal Trickery. He Achieves That By Remodeling His Penchant For Heavy Bass And Gloomy Dub Into A Kind Of Otherworldly Folk Music, Drawing In Deterritorialized String Instruments, Cheeky Digital Sound Design, Coil-Ian Horror Synths, And Drums That Remind As Much Of Heavy Metal As Of Hollywood Neo-Classicism. It Is By Pushing The Envelope On The Most Contradictory Elements That Legendo Ascends To A Form Of Mocking Poetry. Many Weird Characters Are Encountered Through The Narrative: From The Various Musicians That Contributed To The Music (Such As Vocalist John Glacier, Guitarist Adam Repucha And Koto Player Katarzyna Karpi?Ska), But Also Many Fringe Fascinations That Hail From Grzelak's Native Poland: From The 1897 Painting 'Skarby Sezamu' By Stanislaw Wyspia?Ski That Inspired The Track Of The Same Name, To The Delirious Paganism Of Outsider Artist Stanislaw Skukalski, To The Lullaby Referenced In 'Iskiereczka'. These Entities All Dwell Inside Legendo And Conduct Its Chapters, Rendering The Liminal Dimension Of Its Sound As Real As It Is In Its Creator's Mind.

Fresh off of their 2020 offering Adult Themes, El Michels Affair is back with a new full-length release. Titled Yeti Season, this newest album has everything we've come to expect from EMA's patented cinematic style of instrumental soul music. Where Adult Themes inspired a soundtrack to an imaginary film, Yeti Season brings us to a different place in time_with new inspirations. Taken with Turkish-styled funk and an almost Mumbai-esque take on soul, El Michels Affair offers us a different kind of drama and imagination with Yeti Season. If you've been following along, this shouldn't be viewed as too far a departure for El Michels Affair. The first single off of Yeti Season showed their hand back in 2018. A double-sided banger, that release brought the musical textures to the fore that dominate this record. The first song, titled "Unathi," is fully realized with the beautifully haunting-yet-hopeful vocals of Piya Malik, formally of 79.5_another Big Crown artist. Singing in Hindi, Piya's ethereal voice is telling us to work and strive together toward progress. Even if you don't understand her language, you can still hear the urgency of purpose, creating a lasting vibe that sits on top of it all. Leon Michels explains that Piya had a vital influence on this record: "When Piya started singing in Hindi, she had a different voice, a different tone. I knew we had to do something together." And so Piya appears on three other songs on Yeti Season: "Zaharila," "Murkit Gem," and "Dhuaan." Each providing particular signatures to the album. "Zaharila" is a building and changing love song punctuated by blaring trumpets, driving drums, and Piya's pleading lyrics. While the more upbeat "Murkit Gem" opens with a fuzzed out, Wu-Tang-esque baseline that buoys Piya's stylings. The psychedelic guitar and Piya's changing tones and textures singing about an all-consuming love are what pushed "Dhuaan" on to the second single from Yeti Season. There is also a vocal appearance from Shannon Wise of The Shacks, yet another Big Crown artist. Her song called "Sha Na Na," lies more in the familiar EMA vein: melodic, hypnotic, soulfully visual. But between Shannon's airy singing, the jumpy baseline, moody vibes, the active drum lines, it sounds like a pensive walk home after a strangely dramatic night. So what is Yeti Season? It could be more of a feeling than an actual place or time of year. It's a heavy album_as evidenced by the signature musicianship and dramatic vocal expressions. But it's also a hopeful record, with phrasings, textures, and chord changes that hint at something better_or fuller_coming our way. You hear it in songs like "Ala Vida," with its stabby, pulsing chords laying a bedrock for EMA's bright, atmospheric horn lines. Or even in "Fazed Out," which leaves you with a feeling of determination, a striving for resolution even though the driving, march-like song structure should accompany some conquering army. This persistence has to come from the fact that Leon Michels and company finished this record during the lockdown. It was a tough and troublesome time. But look at what has come of it: Yeti Season_a record of high and heavy drama, but also one of hope and promise. It may take a year like 2020 behind us to find hope in a winter big footed creature like a Yeti, but that's where we are.

It all started when Herman “Butch” Slaughter whose technical training in music came from being First Chair/First Chair Baritone in a few school choirs. He had several attempts at putting a group together eventually leading to the creation of The Words of Wisdom with Karen Slaughter, Robert “Buck” Vaughn, Rosa Lunderman and Mabel Heart. They started earning some good popularity at the crossing of the seventies and eighties although experienced some quick lineup changes until they disbanded in 1982 short after cutting these two belters. Stable artists at the legendary Lamp - the so called “Naptown’s Motown” - these guys were part of the sparkling funk soul scene of Indianapolis alongside the likes of The Vanguards and The Fabulous Souls. Writer, producers, studio owners involved in these recordings all passed away except Herman Slaughter, founder member of the band and a blasting dj still active on his scene. The recordings presented on this release went lost until 2 years ago. It’s been necessary a massive audio repair/restoration, hope you will appreciate the job we’ve done with them.

Ah…why the Sex Pistols fashioned writing? Just because Funk WAS THE Black Punk! Viva Naptown!

Sought-after disco / funk / boogie album from the US, 1978!! Pro-sounding recording with top level musicianship and perfect sound quality, comparable to any other major album of the time (think Love Unlimited Orchestra!). Mixed by Disco legend Joaquin J. Lopes and featuring brothers John & Rocco Giamundo. Mostly instrumental with superb arrangements (string, keys and even the Vako Ochestron on one track) and surprising occasional fuzz/effects electric guitar. Originally released as a promo album in blank sleeve (now impossible to find) on the band’s own Artemis label, it was subsequently issued in Belgium (under the Reverie – Get Up And Dance title) and Japan, both housed in picture sleeves. Including club / rare-groove classics like “It’s True” (compiled on “Under The Influence Vol. 2 by Paul Phillips), “Get It On And Dance”, “The Way We Were” (a disco-symphonic version of the Barbra Streisand movie hit) and more… Here’s the first ever reissue featuring new artwork (based on the band’s original idea for the intended but never finished US cover) and master tape sound.

Sonor Music Editions is happy to announce the reissue of another holy grail by maestro Alessandro Alessandroni. The first legendary Farfalla release, "Alessandro Alessandroni E Il Suo Complesso" originally released in a few hundred copies on the cult Sermi imprint in February 1968. The seminal debut album realized by the legendary Italian maestro, featuring bewitching scat vocals by his wife Giulia De Mutiis (aka Kema), that truly started the Italian Library production golden era that would culminate in mid ‘1980s. A true landmark of the genre and an Italian discography jewel that spaces among the best Jazz, Bossa Nova and Lounge music; undoubtedly a desirable item of world’s record collecting field. Obsessive Jazz suites, enchanting scats over mind-blowing Bossa tunes, bouncy break-beats drums, groovy Pop and refined loungy atmospheres over some soft Psichedelia arrangements. An essential Italian Library masterpiece.

They were fated to meet. No doubt about that. But planet jazz is sometimes so vast it is hard to cross paths at the right time - all you can do is take your time and the blue notes will do the rest - those on the Komos label, for example. Randy Kerber was born in 1958 in Encino, California, and began the piano at a very young age. At 19, he embarked on a tour alongside Bette Midler. Then came tours with Lionel Hampton and Don Ellis, two major figures in jazz, rapidly introducing him to this music on the most sumptuous of stages (North Sea Jazz, Montreux, Juan Les Pins …). He then accompanied artists such as Quincy Jones, Barbara Streisand, B.B. King, Michael Jackson, Leonard Cohen, Whitney Houston, Annie Lennox and Frank Sinatra. Yet it is in the world of cinema that Randy Kerber made a name for himself and his fingers by participating in over one thousand (1000 !) full length features. He played the solo in Forrest Gump, was featured in Titanic, in La la Land, and notably, orchestrated Solo: A Star Wars Story, The Dark Knight, The Legend of Zorro and The Color Purple. In total, he spent forty years at the service of others until taking part in The Eddy, a series on jazz by Damien Chazelle, in which he plays Randy, the pianist. This made perfect sense - he lives in Paris. Jowee Omicil, was born in 1977, in Montréal and is of Haitian descent. His mother passed away when he was five years old. His father, a pastor, encouraged him to attend music school when he turned 15. He began by studying the piano but quickly turned his attention to reed-based instruments - soprano and alto saxophone, clarinet…He has played with musicians such as Branford Marsalis, Richard Bona, Marcus Miller and Wyclef Jean. In total, he has released five albums as a band leader or in his own name, right up to The Eddy, Damien Chazelle’s series on jazz, in which he plays Jowee, the saxophonist. This made perfect sense - he lives in Paris. So Paris is where the two crossed paths. Crossed paths? It would be better to say that their worlds collided. “It was immediate”, remembers Jowee, “I had never experienced this before. It’s very hard to explain.” Randy adds: “With other musicians, we held back, things stayed on the surface. With Jowee, we listen, get on and understand each other, it’s mutual.” Antoine Rajon, from the Komos label suggested Jowee record a duet album with a pianist. Jowee jumped on the occasion: “There were two pianists I wanted to play with, Keith Jarret and Randy Kerber.” Randy accepted straight away: “I had been working for others for so long, that it was high time for me to play for myself. One collaboration led to another so quickly throughout all these years, that I never really had time to settle down. It’s different now that I live in Paris.” The two men joined forces at the Studio Pigalle in early July. They had composed but a few notes for three of the thirteen tracks which make up the Y Pati album. The rest is pure improvisation - fleeting moments, the desire to play, long dialogues, rambling duos, jazz antics, blues fantasies - a quick nod to Miles, a tribute to Jowee’s father and a tip of the hat to Randy’s daughter. Randy is sometimes sitting at the piano but more often on the Chamberlin, Osmose or the Continuum Fingerboard. As for Jowee, he has harnessed the sax - tenor, alto or soprano – the clarinet, cornet, piccolo flute and also sings, on occasion. The pieces have been recorded as they were improvised and imagined, without overdubs or retakes. Each track has a story which unfolded when it was created, stories recalled upon meeting again in September just before the release of the album. The Long way Home for example, revisits a piece imagined for The Eddy. It is the first track on the album. “Randy played it on the piano for the series, it appeared in my mind, so we worked from that memory.” On Grenadié, Randy opens fire on the Chamberlin before Jowee bounces in. “When we begin, we never really know where we’re headed”, insists Jowee. “But ‘Grenadié à l’assaut’ (get ready for action, grenade thrower!) was one of my dad’s expressions. A way of fighting for freedom. His approach inspired the track”. Lumière au bout du tunnel (Light at the End of the Tunnel) was constructed in the manner of a film scene. “In the end, the album was conceived as cinematic jazz, explains Randy. Soundtrack music without a film. Every time, we wanted there to be an incarnation, an evocation, images. On this piece, we have conjured up a progression leading from the shadows into the light.” J.C.O. is a tribute to Jowee’s father, Joseph, C. Omicil. “Randy deciphered the notes I had scribbled down and extended the piece. What Randy has played is marvelous. This is the first ever piece I have dedicated to my father. Up until then, I hadn’t reached his level. He would have approved of this one. Thankyou Randy.” Then, the two men go on their way, talking, smiling, as if they have always known each other. Randy kerber : piano and keys (Fender Rhodes, Chamberlin, Continuum Fingerboard and Expressive E Osmose). Jowee Omicil : vocals, tenor, alto and soprano saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet, cornet, piccolo flute and Fender Rhodes.

Little is known about Norman Feels…but we do know that he was an underground soul sensation in the 1970s. He released two classic albums on Just Sunshine Records (the label that was also responsible for putting out milestone recordings by artists like Betty Davis, Karen Dalton and Arica). Over the years, Norman’s songs have been sampled by renowned acts from the likes of Ghostface Killah, Nas and Kanye West.

The sound his songs emit reminds of the classic soul coming out of New Jersey at the time, but it just has that extra thing going for it…something alternative and exceptional. This made for an excellent match with the ‘Just Sunshine’ label that released both of his albums. Just like his labelmate Betty Davis, Norman Feels was an artist that was hard to typecast and compare with his contemporaries/peers…this makes Norman’s work very interesting and worth every soul/funk connoisseur’s time.

Following up on his classic 1973 self-titled debut, Norman Feels treated his fans with another exceptional album (Where Or When from 1974). The songs on this one are a tad less dark & heavy, which makes it a bit more accessible to the listener…but certainly not less worthy! Norman’s sophomore album also features two carefully selected cover songs: Where or When written by Rodgers and Hart and the magnificent Till You Come Back to Me which was written by Stevie Wonder and made famous by Aretha Franklin. Just like on his debut album all the compositions have been beautifully arranged by David Van De Pitte (who is world-famous for the arrangements heard on Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’) and topped off by Sal Scaltro’s slick production work.

Next to Norman Feels’ fascinating writing skills and trademark voice you’ll find intriguing (and at times scary) themes about love, obsession, sadness…all wrapped in a looming, jazzy atmosphere complete with sharp lyrics (touching on subjects that were pretty controversial at the time). Fans of Norman’s debut will also hear the rich instrumentation and that dark psychedelic feeling they came to love…all of this makes Where Or When a total ‘must-have’ album that begs for a special place in your record collection!

Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the First ever vinyl reissue of this fantastic album (originally released in 1974 on Just Sunshine Records). This rare record (original copies tend to go for large amounts on the secondary market).

Anonymous British funk studio outfit Ultrafunk was spearheaded by Blues & Soul magazine proprietor John Abbey, who ran a fashionable record shop and label called Contempo in London’s West End during the 1970s; he conceived of the group as the UK counterpart to US studio bands like Mfsb. Arranger Gerry Shury, who had worked with Barry White and Maurice Gibb of the Bee Gees, drafted guitarist Chris Rae and bassist Frank McDonald (who often composed library music together) and future Rubettes drummer John Richardson to form the group, in situ. A lack of band photos, suggestive song titles and a predilection for American cover tunes led many to believe the band was US-based. Their self-titled debut LP is where the myth all begins, with a number of truly atmospheric and cinematic hard funk instrumentals, given added textural depth through full orchestration, including covers of Bill Withers’ “Use Me” and Stevie Wonder’s “Living In The City.” Though not quite as compelling as the better-known follow-up set, Meat Heat, there is still plenty to savour on Ultrafunk, making this debut companion disc a must-have for all true funk aficionados.

Contento like to label their music “salsapunk” – smart, witty stuff with a deceptively simple home-made aesthetic. It’s salsa of a kind, but not necessarily as we know it. It could be salsa played by AI robots, but conceived by a duo with the playful sparkle of those Swiss master producer-musicians, Yello. “The sound comes from what we have to hand in order to make the music...”, says the group. Contento are two expatriate Colombians who like to make people happy. Geneva-based Paulo Olarte is a member of Acid Coco, El Dragón Criollo and La Jungla, as well as recording under his own name. Former native of Medellín and current resident of Barcelona, Sebastian Hoyos, aka Sano, is a DJ and producer who has released his own brand of minimalist Latin house for the Cómeme label in Berlin, ultra-hip devotees of “the dark side of the mirror ball”. It was in Berlin, at an Eddie Palmieri concert, that the pair met in 2011 and discovered a mutual passion for la salsa. They kept in touch, though it was five years before they took enough time off from their respective projects to explore why and how they wanted to make music together. Between 2016 and 2019, they met on and off in Barcelona and Geneva to lay down some of their ideas. The eight best numbers became Lo Bueno Está Aquí, their debut album. They wanted to give their audience “a new salsa sound, that will make you want to discover some of the older sounds, too.” The result is something that you might describe as “retro-smart”: it does indeed remind you of older sounds like Nuyorican boogaloo from the ‘60s and cumbia from the golden age of Discos Fuentes, yet it’s also modern and refreshingly different. The two musicians create a sonic palette from what Paulo suggests as “what we have to hand”: bass, piano, organ, guitar, a range of keyboards, assorted percussion instruments and the vintage drum machines that, along with a liberal use of distortion, contribute to the album’s signature sound. It’s “lo-fi with a super-clean production”, and guaranteed to make you dance. “It starts with laying down a piano riff,” Paulo goes on, “or we start with a rhythmic tumbao and we build it up from there.” Take, for example, the recent single, “Dale Melón”, which opens the album and establishes a template for much of what follows. Starting with the beat, beat, beat of the drum machine, bass, guitar, keyboards and percussion are all drip-fed into the mix and supplemented by a simple, insistent vocal refrain and the raw alto sax of the Venezuelan saxophonist they met in the Barcelona studio where the recording was finished off. It’s a recipe for some seriously smart, witty dance music to drive your funky soul. The alto sax helps to colour the delicious “Paso Palante”, which kicks off the second side with ringing guitar and keyboards to create a feel somewhere between Colombia’s Pacific coast and Central Africa. The slightly demented vocal refrain is repeated ad nauseam and the overall effect recalls the off-kilter sound of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Staff Benda Bilili. Much of the album, in fact, is slightly skewed and disarming,as if the spirit of Thelonious Monk presided over its recording. “Loco Por Tu Amor”, for example, could be taken from a soundtrack to a cheap Latin horror film, simultaneously unsettling and thrilling. The glorious “De Todas Maneras” could be a rough-cut for Ray Barretto’s suave and slinky “Cocinado”. “Pelo Negro” is an insistent trademark mix of cumbia and boogaloo, with tongue-in-cheek vocals that are positively expansive. “The way you shake that thing/Gonna make me burn, gonna make me sing...” Listen to the catchy, repetitive closer, “Enlulao”, just before you go to bed and you’ll still be chanting the refrain the following morning. All eight numbers last just long enough to work an infectious magic; nothing out stays its welcome. Contento didn’t choose their name by accident. They want to make people feel happy, contented. You’d be hard pressed to keep your feet still or listen to this seriously hip, deliciously wonky album without a grin on your face from start to finish.

The mysterious afro-soul of The Shaolin Afronauts rst echoed across the dance oors of Australia in late 2008. Heavily inspired by the sounds of 1970's West Africa, Ethiopia and the pioneering avant-garde jazz artists of the same period, The Shaolin Afronauts draw on the this highly innovative and sometimes volatile era in music, using it as inspiration to create music with the same re and intensity. Though there is something refreshing and original about the Afronauts, their music could be described as somewhere in between the heavy Afrobeat of Fela Kuti and the Ethio-Jazz of Mulatu Astatke. The key to the Shaolin Afronauts unique sound is the line-up, which comprises of a three piece horn section, 5 piece rhythm section and three percussionists, and this polyrhythmic approach layers the groups sound with a mesmerizing and hypnotic texture. Kicking off with Journey Through Time (also released as the A side of the limited edition 12 inch vinyl single: Fsr091) the multiple layers of percussion and rhythms indeed unleash an unstoppable groove, which is nicely balanced against the albums slower, more introspective moments, such as Rise With The Blind which along with haunting, mellow Scarab prove that contemporary afrobeat rooted music doesn't always have to be an unrelenting, uptempo assault on the senses and can provide moments of sheer beauty and reection. This added element of subtlety sets The Shaolin Afronauts music apart from much of the recent crop of other bands with similar inuences, That said, these guys are still a collective capable of burning some stone cold classic and killer grooves, The Shaolin Afronauts are the band to watch out for in 2011! .

Bill Brown and Al Hall jr met around 1971, they were both in south central L.A and shared the same apartment building, also in the same building was Doug Carn and brownstone singer billy Wilson. These studio sessions were don't at Paramount studios Hollywood where Al Hall jr was working for producer Art Smith a&c music. The main distributor for A&C was Accent records. So the Soul Injections very first single "Stay off the moon" was released via Accent, as was Bill Brown's "Bip Bam" The group wasn't that pleased with how Accent handle the releases so Bill took it upon himself to set up his own label called Brownstone records. Many musicians were called in for studio sessions these included Doug Carn, organ; Kirk Lightsey, keyboards; Mel Bolton, guitars; Mel Lee, drums; Al Hall jr (trombones), Willaim 'Bill Henderson strings. The label was met with some confrontation from other Hollywood labels and many of the Brownstone releases were told not to hit the shops by Mafia run labels. Later around 1975 Brownstone released a track by Everyday people feat Alexis "world full of people"....A now cult soul 45 ....We are pleased to give you our last outing for Bill and the Crew. "Dreamworld Fantasies" is a wonderful unissued 1977 modern soul disco tune dreaming of how our lives should be, flip it over and we have given you the rare previously released 1971 single of "Stay off the moon" a political message that still seems relevant today

His father is just as much a percussionist as his uncle Carlos Nene Quintero and his cousin Roberto Quintero . He became a member of the Orquesta Simfonica de Venezuela , but soon appeared with ensembles such as Grupo Guaco and El Trabuco Venezolano and toured with Oscar D'León.

Picture Sélène, a young schoolgirl, walking through the aisles of the Django Reinhardt festival at Samois sur Seine, near Fontainebleau in the Parisian suburbs - just a stone’s throw from the village she lives in. She is just fourteen, or fifteen, and is working as a volunteer among all these musicians who compose a world she is not yet fully aware of. Of course, she seems intensely drawn to this music she has become acquainted with over the passing years. Her spirit and fingertips have been set in motion, her interest in the guitar has peaked (which seems obvious, seen the place!) but she is lacking genuine conviction. “And then, at 15, at a concert, I fell for the double bass. Why at this exact moment? I really don’t know. But it was love at first sight. In hindsight, it’s easier for me to explain – you can play the double bass, even as a complete beginner, and this is impossible with a violin; you always need a base with jazz; and ultimately, it’s a magnificent instrument. I like the wood, the shape, the size, the sound - everything.” After leaving school, Sélène Saint-Aimé registered at the Paris College of Music and the Conservatoire de Boulogne where she studied jazz, classical music and bowing technique – the repertoire of the double bass opened its doors wide. In July 2016, she met Steve Coleman, then in residence at Montreuil. This was a revelation. She felt attracted to his demanding brand of jazz music, made of improvisation, music thanks to which she felt she could readily express her creativity. Now picture Sélène, aged around twenty, conquering yet discrete, upon her arrival in New York following the advice of Steve Coleman. She has been to the most prestigious jazz clubs under the benevolence of highly esteemed elders. She is watching, listening, observing and learning. She has attended classes taught by Ron Carter. And followed Steve Coleman during his residencies and master classes. You could do worse when it comes to mentoring and honing your art. This period of her life was very rich - she shared her time between France and the US, between work and play, between an intense present and an emerging future. Finally, picture Sélène, back in Paris, determined to play, to play once more, above all to play. She is looking for the right formation, the right music, the right colours and vibrations. She did end up finding them. “I took part in a lot of concerts back in Paris: I played with several musicians. I saw what worked, what didn’t. I’d change as I moved forward. My work is highly intuitive. I taught myself composition. I hope that soon, I’ll manage to work with the formation that suits me best: a basic string trio, double bass, cello, viola or violin.” In June 2019, Antoine Rajon, head of jazz label Komos at Astérios Spectacles, suggested Sélène Saint-André record an album of her own compositions. Her first. She was given free reign and her inspiration was limitless. Mare Undarum was born between the walls of the Studio Pigalle during galvanizing recording sessions where composition and improvisation made such great bedfellows – a combined effort.

Discs of Fun and Love are back and proud to present their fourth release - Rubeinstein - Joy b/w Somehow (Make A Way) Fully licensed and remastered by our friends at Grammy nominated mastering house The Carvery, this is the label’s first gospel record. The songs are taken off Rubeinstein McClure’s only solo record “Rubeinstein” written by her brother Fletcher Washington, Jr and originally released on Locus Records in 1979. A relatively obscure and hard to get by recording, this has been a DFL favourite for a long time. Side A, sung by “Ruby” McClure is a funky soulful gospel heat full of joy whose vocal can give goosebumps to everyone who hears it while side B sung by Fletcher Washington himself is a slower, deeply soulful piece of gospel music. Evangelist Mother “Ruby” McClure started her singing career as part of the Washington Sisters where she sang with her brothers and sisters under the direction of Fletcher Washington and opened up for the Staple Singers, Sam Cooke, The Dixie Hummingbirds and the Swan Silvertones to name a few. Later she was a member and lead soloist with the Radio Choir of Brooklyn’s Institutional Church of God in Christ under the direction of Bishop JC White as well as being a member of the JC White Singers. As part of the JC White Singers she appeared on Max Roach’s “Lift Every Voice and Sing” album and is the lead vocal in “Motherless Child” from the same record. In Bishop JC White’s words, “In our choir days, “Ruby” reigned in the Key of F. Anything that I wrote in that key I was almost certain was going to her voice, to be complimented with her signature melismas, trills and squall. Under the unction of God, Ruby was unexplainable. She could prick even the most stony heart with her impassioned delivery yet meek demeanour. When I needed the emotion of the song to really be delivered, I knew to call Ruby.” Sadly, Mother McClure passed away on the 18th of July last month, just weeks before our announcement. We’d like to thank Bishop JC White for putting us in touch with the wife of the late Fletcher Washington, Jr and Carolyn Washington herself for giving us her blessing to reissue these beautiful songs.

It takes one to know one. Which is why jazz drummers have always been ready to join the queue when assessing Art Blakey's influence, not only in the field of percussion but in the shaping of his chosen genre. Max Roach described him as "An original - the only drummer whose time I recognise immediately. When I first met him on 52nd Street in 1944, he already had the polyrhythmic thing down. He was doing it before anybody else." Thelonious Monk Jr concurred: "When I became a drummer, I learned how to swing from Art Blakey. What he did with the hi-hat and his roll got pressed into my soul. He had a primal approach to drums." All of which warmed the ears of Blakey, who admitted that his aim was to be one of the greatest drummers in the world- an ambition which he undoubtedly achieved.

Released in 1971 while Gil was living in London, this is the third self-titled release from the bossa nova and tropicalia legend. Gil recorded this album while in political exile from his native Brazil and its somber, straightforward tone is a welcome change from the experimental, psychedelic assault of his 1969 long player. Featuring 8 originals and a brilliant cover Steve Winwood's 'Can't Find My Way Home,' this Water release also contains 3 bonus tracks including covers of Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles. A tropicalia classic.
