Release:1971 / US – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
It’s been nearly five decades since Joe McPhee assembled a group of musicians to perform the weekend concerts that would become Nation Time, his debut LP. It was December 1970, thirty-one-year-old McPhee was inspired by Amiri Baraka’s poem ‘It’s Nation Time,’ and the students at Vassar College didn’t know what hit them. ‘What time is it?’ shouted the bandleader. ‘C’mon, you can do better than that. What time is it?!’ The music on Nation Time came out of the fertile, but little-known creative jazz scene in Poughkeepsie, New York, McPhee’s home base. Two bands were deployed, one with a funky free foundation featuring guitar and organ, the other consisting of a more standard jazz formation with two drummers and the brilliant Mike Kull at the piano. Across the concert and the next afternoon’s audience-less recording session, the band was ignited by McPhee’s passion and his gorgeous post-Coltrane / post-Pharoah tenor. On ‘Shakey Jake,’ they hit a James Brown groove filtered through Archie Shepp, while the sidelong title track is as searching and poignant today as it was during its heyday. Originally released in 1971 on CjR, an imprint started expressly to document McPhee’s music, Nation Time has a sense of urgency and inspiration. Additional material from those December days would later appear on Black Magic Man, Hat Hut’s first release. In fact, the first four records on this seminal Swiss label all featured McPhee.

Huddie William Ledbetter, better known to the world as Leadbelly, was one of the most celebrated guitarists and vocalists of 20th century American music. He introduced the world to many traditional folk and gospel songs and his versions remain some of the most well known and beautiful ever cut to tape. Born on a plantation in Louisiana in 1888, Leadbelly got his start as a teenager performing in the red-light district of Shreveport. "Discovered" by the legendary folklorists John and Alan Lomax while Leadbelly was serving time in Angola state prison for attempted murder. They recorded him while in prison and in 1934, at the age of 46, made these recordings, the first commercial recordings of his career. Featuring a wide repertoire of folk and blues songs along with his powerful voice and unique guitar style, these tracks are absolute cornerstones of American folk and blues music and some of the greatest tracks he ever cut.

Mance Lipscomb - born Beau De Glen Lipscomb near Navasota, Texas in 1895, and nicknamed Mance (short for emancipation) by a childhood friend - was an incredible guitarist and blues singers who didn't make a recording until the age of 65. Discovered during the folk and blues revival of the late '50s and early '60s Lipscomb would record regularly until his death in 1976 at the age of 80. A tenant farmer for most of his life, Lipscomb was the son of a former slave father and half-Choctaw Indian mother. He began playing guitar early in his life and spent most of his life performing at "Saturday night suppers" hosted by local friends or, often, by himself and his wife. After his discovery, Lipscomb would go on to perform at the first ever Monterey Folk Festival in 1963 as well as at numerous clubs of the folk-revival, most notable The Ash Grove in Los Angeles. Collected here are his earliest recordings, from 1960, and they are some of the most beautiful and transcendent of Texas folk-blues. Crucial recordings from one of the greatest individual voices of the folk and blues revival.

The long overlooked ballads from the flipsides of the funk 45s in the Now-Again and Truth & Soul vaults. 80 page booklet with full annotation, extensive liner notes and never-before-published photos. 21 RARE AND UNRELEASED TRACKS. LONG OVERLOOKED BALLADS FROM THE FLIP SIDES OF THE FUNK 45S IN THE NOW-AGAIN VAULTS. Now-Again unearthed so much information about the bandsthat recorded the definitive disco and modern soul contained in our recently launched Soul Cal anthology that we decided we had no choice but to release an album and a book at the same time. Well, following that line, the music contained on Loving On The Flip Side music is too damn good to be anonymously relaunched, decades after musical visionaries blended the best of heavy funk and sweet soul into a unified whole. And simply telling the stories of thesevocalists and bands without allowing their lovelorn pleas to be heard again wasn’t an option. Thus, Loving On The Flip Side again offers the enthused a chance to listen to, read about and reflect on another great burst of black American creativity: the creation of the sublime genre we like to call “sweet funk.” It seems laughable to skip past Thomas East’s “Slipping Around” 7” for the cheesy funk of ‘Just A Trip,” or to listen obsessively to Lou Ragland’s instrumental funk on the Hot Chocolate LP and ignore his indolent-yet-stirring “We Had True Love.” Yet we did just that, untilwe first heard the Darling Dears and Funky Heavy’s beautiful two-sider nearly ten years back. This was the record that set Loving On The Flip Side in motion, as the Darling Dears and Funky Heavy’s two songs precipitated the sweet funk genre: the dichotomy of Funky Heavy’s skull snapping rhythm section and the teenage Dears’ angelic harmonies didn’t sound like anything we’d heard before. That discovery set off a decade long search for the band and culminated intheir discovery, the documenting of their stories, the emergence of their master tapes and the inclusion of their songs on Loving On The Flip Side. The excitement we felt while listening to the Darling Dears and Funky Heavy’s masterworks forced us back into the field, in search of other sweet funk swooners and beat-heavy ballads to round out this anthology. The opportunity to present anew such wondrous soulmusic made the exhaustive process that produced Loving On The Flip Side worthwhile, and allowed us to collect one-offs that escaped prior investigations into the deep funk and sweet soul genres.

When you see some dude having listed an album for sale somewhere for the utterly crazy price of 7500 US$ saying in the item description that he actually does not even want to sell it due to being his favorite piece of music ever, it really must be something special. When you check for other auctions and sales and find this goodie being sold regularily for 650 to 1200 US$, you get your first impression confirmed. This is indeed a really special album. THE GHETTO BROTHERS were not initially a rock band when they formed in the Bronx / NYC back in the late 60s. They were a street gang with mainly Puerto Rican members with a rather political attitude. For example they tried to uplift young black and hispanic people or even stood in between rival gangs to make a truce work. They were certainly not only good guys concerning their actions as they used to plunder a local music store, Mary Lou Records, from time to time where then young Bobby Marin, a leading figure in the field of 1960s Boogaloo music and later on famous record producer up to the present day, used to work in. As the store owner thought about using a shotgun to solve that problem, Bobby Marin convinced him not to do so to avoid that anybody gets hurt and took the chance to speak personally with the gang leader Benji Mendelez who turned out to be the lead singer of a band formed by members of the GHETTO BROTHERS. Meanwhile Benji Mendelez found out about Bobby’s engagement in the music industry and both made an agreement. Bobby would produce an album by THE GHETTO BROTHERS and this is what we now will talk about. In what way is this an outstanding gem of Latin American funky rock music from the steamy, loud and dirty streets of the South Bronx / NYC? Well, it is of course rare as golddust in its original pressing. This is an aspect that makes it interesting for collectors of 70s Music and the seed from which the legendary reputation grows. But does the music really match with the status the album enjoys among music lovers? It does. My first impression was that THE GHETTO BROTHERS were a very talented band mixing earthy garage rock with the one or another occasional fuzz guitar and Latin American sounds and atmospheres to create an exciting, simmering version of current rock music. The garage rock stamp still fits perfectly with this album as the sound is quite basic and vivid, just as if you were standing with the band in a dusty basement room where they either rehearse or play a show to a crowd of frantic youngsters. The music itself is quite relaxed in most parts, with the one or another exception. „Got this happy feeling“ sticks out with flashing rhythms and a cheerful lead vocal line upon a bed of likewise flashing guitars with a funky touch. So these funky elements also make you realize that there is more behind than meets the ear. And when the band goes into sheer groove passages with the percussions and drums taking over the lead role, I am certain nobody will be left on his seat. This song reminds me of a more primitive version, if I can say this, of what SANTANA did a couple of years prior during the time they released their debut album and played Woodstock. And indeed these Puerto Ricans have the talent even to be on par with good old Carlos and his mates, who already were super heroes by the time THE GHETTO BROTHERS released their sole album. No idea who even might be the greater in terms of musicianship and composition values but with a major production this album would probably have given SANTANA a run for their money. But gang life is tough and casualties appeared leading the band to the land of myths and fables. But with many folks who love this music the band stayed for nearly 50 years and this reissue on EVERLAND RECORDS happens as always at the right time to keep the flame burning brightly and maybe even brighter than ever. A few old members, including leader Benji Mendelez, are no longer with us to enjoy the late success of this masterpiece but those who remain will. If you like Latin garage rock such as LAGHONIA from Peru, this is the real deal for you. Grab your copy and celebrate life as this is what THE GHETTO BROTHERS always had in mind.

Recorded in 1963 at the peak of the folk revival, Muddy Waters entered the studio to record an all-acoustic set. Known for his distinctive electric blues style this recording was definitely a departure for Waters, but the results are historically great. A beautiful album from start to finish, featuring the great Buddy Guy on guitar, and Willie Dixon on bass (he also produced the album), this has come to be known as one of Waters' best albums. A great piece of acoustic blues from one of the legends of the genre.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe is often referred to as "the godmother of rock and roll" for her pioneering guitar technique, use of distortion/reverb, and a 1963 UK tour with Muddy Waters that has been cited as a huge influence by Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, and Jeff Beck. Though she reached more widespread notoriety across the world in the '50s and '60s thanks to the folk/blues revival and her beloved status among UK blues and rock musicians, it's her early recordings from the late '30s and early-mid '40s that are the most brilliant, visceral, and emotional of her career. This excellent collection compiles 18 of those amazing gospel and R&B sides into one place. Essential.

Wolf Escher turned to Modern Jazz while studying music in Dortmund. He played in the Peter Heidemann Quintet, and performed with Ingfried Hoffmann's big band at the Kölner Jazz Festival in 1967. In 1969 he recorded his first single with the Wolf Escher Quintet for the legendary JG label. This single is a much coveted collector's item today. He subsequently toured with the Big Bands of Johannes Fehring and Dusko Goykovich. In 1972 he formed the fusion band Time In Space, which was successful in clubs at home and abroad. In 1975 he formed the JugendJazzOrchester Nordhein-Westfalen, with which he toured across the former Soviet Union, Africa, North America, India, Australia and South America. He recorded several albums and worked as a composer and arranger for the orchestra. A true collectors item!

Beinahe erotisch. „Fuck Penetration“ will was!! Das wird, vom titelgebenden fröhlichen Aufschrei gegen Phallokratie und Phantasielosigkeit abgesehen, wohl am deutlichsten beim Song „Charity/Therapy“, in dem eine so naive wie tiefe Frage gestellt wird: Was wäre, wenn „das seltsame Wesen“, das der Mensch ist, sein Wissen für sein Glück einsetzen würde, statt zur Vernichtung der Konkurrenz und der Welt?Die Antwort ist der Refrain: „We wouldn’t need Charity / And we wouldn’t need therapy“. Take me out, Argonaut!“ Ja, bitte! Unbedingt: Nimm uns mit!Und wenn Chris Imler im Song „Herr der Ringe“ das Mikrophon übernimmt, nachdem Friebe vorher das ganze Werk Tolkiens auseinandergenommen hat - und den Titel als arabeskes Mantra vorträgt, wird auch dem letzten Zweifler klar: „Fuck Penetration“ ist das Album, auf das wir alle gewartet haben: Straight oder queer!Zum Schluss bleiben eigentlich nur zwei Fragen offen: „Is it enough, love?“ und „Is love enough?“.Maurice Summen

If Cannibale's members brought their breakfast back up when talking about 'Not Easy To Cook', their listeners would be surprised. There's a world of difference between the beginning of Cannibale's success story and this second album. The most surprising thing about 'Not Easy To Cook' is the sultriness that emerges. It's hard to sum it up other than by comparing these 10 songs with some pressure cooker in which bits of dancehall, London ska and Hawaiian dub would have cooked together. Here's the small miracle achieved by this LP recorded by the band in its remote French village: sounding French, but Polynesian French. A very psychedelic mixture of cumbia, African rhythms and garage music. Or, if you will, a kind of missing link between Fela Kuti, The Doors and The Seeds!

Here we find a pure disco classic from the US scene of the late 70s. The original copies retail at plus $300, that’s only if you can find one at all! So those who love to spin good music, but are unwilling or unable to lay down too much money can now lend an ear to this fine vinyl! The opening track is 6.5 minutes long and consists of ongoing grooves with a hint of rock thanks to the melodic lead guitar. The driving rhythms are irresistible with soulful and strong female lead vocals that capture you right away. This reminds me strongly of the lengthy Donna summer dance classic, released during the same period ‘Better than walking out’ which became a dance floor sweeper. There is nothing complicated here, just sheer groove interwoven with catchy melodies. “Lovin‘ you is so easy“ follows and is a mid-paced soul anthem that comes as clean, slick and close to pop music a tune can come, but the melody of the chorus will stick to your mind. The arrangements are tight revealing several layers of instrumentation on second take. The lead singer’s expressive voice matches with the best of its genre. A grand dame of soul familiar to a wide audience. While we ruminate about the different stylistic ingredients of this album we reach ‘’Woman“, an entire instrumental with a straight groovy beat paired by cool funky rhythm guitar that lies beneath a soundscape made by the electric piano. Both seem to interact tightly and communicate with another. This tune just moves you physically with ease. Lushly orchestrated ‘’Our love is special“ turns out to be a wonderful soul pop anthem of the kind that stays with you when you have only enjoyed it once. I’m almost certain that most fans of the late 70’s soulful dance and pop will spin this record over and over again. This is what the DISCO LADIES are made for. Their music has this certain disco feeling but the classic 60s Motown Soul roots are so obvious and keep the whole collection of songs so grounded, that the music will go straight to the heart, nestling there for a long time. ‘’I second that emotion“ is again a mid-paced groover that has this fluttering beat with great instrumental figures build upon this footing. One might hear elements of reggae, gospel and funk melting into an utterly joyful soul pop tune that eventually would become an evergreen in the clubs. Last but not least we are treated to ‘’Woman“, again the arrangements of lead and backing vocals are amazing! These are footed by equally amazing strings and horns. These melodies, soulful, expressive, intense and full of joy! The last tune is a vocal version of “Woman“. Definitely being the highlight of the entire album and a worthy finale for a record that sticks out of the masses of disco music productions of it’s era! All this makes a wonderful and delightful reissue ! worthy of joining every black music aficionado of the 1970s.

Bettye Lavette may not be a household name like Aretha or Otis, but her talent as a soul singer is just as mercurial. She has cultivated a 55+ year career that led to three Grammy nominations, a W.C. Handy Award for Comeback of the Year, 2008's Best Contemporary Female Blues Singer, all of which tell the story of perseverance personified. The music on this ais from her 1972 sessions at Muscle Shoals Sound, backed by the famous house band of Barry Beckett, Jimmy Johnson, David Hood and Roger Hawkins. These tracks were never released at the time of recording and this brand new collection includes all of her Muscle Shoals recordings plus 2 bonus tracks recorded the same year in Detroit, all making their debut on vinyl after 46 years. With new artwork, liner notes by Billy Vera and our typical deluxe packaging, this limited ROG release should not be missed.

First time reissued on vinyl! This is in fact more than just a rare record and definitely more than just a vinyl share for insatiable collectors who only judge a record by it's monetary value. This is a prime example of overflowing talent coupled with a simmering passion for music and the hunger for life right at the moment. The story begins on Jue 7th 1957 in a small Ghanaian village where Kofi Kwarko Gyan, nicknamed Kiki, was born into a middle class family. Soon his talent as a musician began to show when he started taking piano lessions by the age of 5 and went professional by the age of 12. He dropped out of school shortly after and began living a life on the road with regional Ghanaian bands. One trip abroad took him to London in the early 70s where his career received a giant push at the age of 15. He joined afro rock legends OSIBISA in 1972 as their new keyboardist after his predecessor had left the band. By the mid 70s Kiki Gyan had played with OSIBISA to giant audiences allover the world and met personalities from the international music scene such as Elton John and Mick Jagger. He was not only a steady keyboardist for OSIBISA but also a very popular session man for fellow African bands and musicians, among them OFEGE from Nigeria. He released a couple of solo albums and we take a closer look now at his second effort from 1979, “Feeling so good”. The music keeps what the title promises as this is a delightful example of joy manifesting in music. Everything is bright here, the grooves are complex and powerful, yet always accessible. The harmonies enchant you with their friendly approach. The African sun shines from each note played on this record. Gyan mixes Western disco sounds, funk, African traditional chants and reggae sounds into an ever flowing groove music that has lot's of melody and mesmerizes by the swirling percussion patterns. “Feeling so good” is an equally physical and spiritual affair and contains six lengthy tunes. Tunes that live from the tight interplay of all instruments, the crisp, clear and powerful production and a wild and steaming atmosphere. Kiki Gyan was on the step of entering the 'Hall of Legends' like Stevie Wonder did, to whom he often got compared to. His legacy remains huge, not only for African music but for all black music that ruled the early disco scene in the 70s and whose popularity is still at full blossom. Next to Fela Kuti and Geraldo Pino, Kiki Gyan can be called a true force in African pop music of the 70s!

Son House is one of the most legendary Southern blues men in history. Just before the Great Depression he recorded some sessions for Paramount that sold very little and when the Depression hit, his recording career was halted. It wasn't until the Library of Congress and Fisk University recorded him at Klack's Store, Lake Cormorant, Mississippi, in August 1941. and again in July of 1942 at Robbinsonville, Mississippi. Those recordings have come to define his career and are a hallmark of the blues genre. Wax Love presents a glorious retrospective compilation of those recordings, with some of his most well known tunes like "Shetland Pony Blues", "Low Down Dirty Dog Blues", and "Walking Blues." Saxophonist Eddie Harris – a favorite sample staple of jazz-leaning hip-hop producers of the ‘90s – was a very busy man in the 1960s, releasing albums at a brisk pace since his first as a leader in 1961. By the late ‘60s he had fully hit his stride, as both a performer and an innovator.A case in point is heard very clearly on this gem from Harris’ expansive catalog – 1968’s Plug Me In, which features his pioneering use of the Varitone saxophone effects processor unit (first heard on his 1967 album, The Tender Storm). The effect, used on “It’s Crazy” and “Ballad (For My Love),” never gets in the way, but gives the proceedings a feeling of “the next.” 1968 saw jazz entering a new era, influenced by electronic advances as well as the soul music dominating the pop charts of the day. Plug Me In slid perfectly into the vanguard of the day. There is a soulful warmth to the proceedings on this classic LP, starting with album opener “Live Right Now,” which builds and swirls to a beautiful crescendo, with notes ricocheting back and forth amongst a top level crew of players including Jodie Christian, Chuck Rainey and Richard Smith. “Lovely Is Today” and “It’s Crazy” also feature waves of sunshiney brass and group interplay, alongside album ballads like “Winter Meeting” and “Ballad (For My Love).”Eddie Harris’ catalog can be daunting, considering his impressive input throughout the 60s and 70s, but there’s a reason fans old and new come back to Plug Me In again and again. Innovation and soul is a combination that never fails, and this reissue is destined to bring more fans into the fold.

Starting in the late 60s, jazz music started to take an interesting, and very soulful turn. Influenced by the funk of the day – from James Brown to Sly & The Family Stone – the artform, generally not considered a funky musical genre, started to stretch out and fit into the times. It was a fertile era, and to reciprocate, funk, soul and groovy rock fans started to discover accomplished, open-minded jazz artists like Les McCann, whose tunes made sense to their ears, even if bebop hadn’t grabbed them. This incredible album – long a favorite of forward-thinking hip-hop producers and DJs – washes over listeners from the first chords of the incredible album opener, “Sometimes I Cry,” led by McCann’s array of analog synthesizers and backed by an excellent rhythm section (Donald Dean on drums; Ralph McDonald on percussion and Jimmy Rowser on bass). Truth be told, highlights are hard to pick out, but fans never go long without returning to the fuzzed-out funk of “The Harlem Buck Strut Dance,” “Let’s Play (Til Mom Calls)” and “It Never Stopped In My Hometown.” These keyboard-drenched grooves sat alongside record stacks brimming with Stevie Wonder, Funkadelic, Marvin Gaye’s 70s soul and, of course, Miles Davis’ space funk experiments of the era (like Bitches Brew). Whether you’re new to Layers or just updating a well-loved and heavily worn-out copy, throw this one on, light one up and lose yourself for an hour…or even a couple days, if you have the option.

Twenty-eight years ago, pissed-off twelve-year-olds around the universe discovered a new planet, a Black Planet. Public Enemy’s aggressive, Benihana beats and incendiary lyrics instilled fear among parents and teachers everywhere, even in the border town of Laredo, Texas, home of the future founders of the Latin-Funk-Soul-Breaks super group, Brownout. The band’s sixth full-length album (out May 25th) Fear of a Brown Planet is a musical manifesto inspired by Public Enemy’s music and revolutionary spirit.Chuck D., the Bomb Squad, Flava Flav and the rest of the P.E. posse couldn’t possibly have expected that their golden-era hip hop albums would sow the seeds for countless Public Enemy sleeper cells, one that would emerge nearly three decades later in Austin, Texas. Greg Gonzalez (bass) remembers a kid back in junior high hipped him to the fact that Public Enemy’s “Bring the Noise” is built on James Brown samples, while a teenaged Beto Martinez (guitar) alternated between metal and hip-hop in his walk-man, and Adrian Quesada (guitar/keys) remembers falling in love with Public Enemy’s sound at an early age. “When I got into Hip hop, I was looking for this aggressive outlet . . . and I didn’t even understand what they were pissed off about, because I was twelve and lived in Laredo . . . but I loved it and I felt angry along with them.”Joseph Abajian (Fat Beats’ owner) must have sensed the deep hip-hop well lying beneath the versatile band’s Latin-Funk veneer. “I thought their sound would work covering Public Enemy songs,” Abajian says, and, “it was good to know they were P.E. fans . . . We came up with a track listing and they went to work.” Despite the band’s eagerness to work on new original material (an album of original songs is slated for next year), they couldn’t pass up the opportunity to pay homage to this iconic and influential posse.Translating sample-based music to a live band turned out to be more of a challenge than they anticipated. Adrian tried to get inside the Bomb Squad’s [Public Enemy’s producers/beat-making team] head in order to find the inspiration to reinterpret P.E.’s songs: “imagine the Bomb Squad going back in time and getting the J.B.s [James Brown’s funky backing band] in the studio and setting up a couple analog synths and then playing those songs.” While some songs closely follow the original musical blueprint, others use the source breakbeats as jumping-off points later sweetened by Trombonist Mark “Speedy” Gonzales’ horn arrangements, synth wizardry courtesy of friend-of-the-band Peter Stopschinski, and DJ Trackstar’s turntable scratches. But don’t listen expecting to hear paint-by-numbers recreations of classic Public Enemy jams. “Our approach is never in the tribute sense,” Adrian explains. “We’ve always taken it and made it our own, whether it’s the Brown Sabbath thing or this Public Enemy thing.”Coming off numerous tours as Brown Sabbath and even a stint backing the late legend Prince, Brownout is arguably the tightest and funkiest band on the road today and they’re psyched to bring this revolutionary music to the people. For a band without an overt political agenda, they collectively couldn’t resist the opportunity to play this music live, especially now. “If there’s any way that we can use the already political and protest nature [of P.E.’s music], we would like to try,” Beto says. “The album’s title, Fear of Brown Planet is definitely a relevant idea today and we’re not afraid to put it out there, because we want to speak out.” By reinterpreting these hip hop classics in their unique style and channeling the spirit of Public Enemy that first echoed around the world and captured their imaginations all those years ago, Brownout is doing exactly that.

It’s the return of the sexual vigilante Sex Judas and his trusted sidekick Ricky. This time in full album mode. Norwegian producer Tore Gjedrem of Ost & Kjex fame, channels his love of comix, bohemia and fascination with human vice, the unspoken, the Red Light districts, the alleys of the mind into his alter ego. Sex Judas is no bad character but certainly says what it’s author cannot. “I wanted to create a world where any musical idea is possible, wound together by the world and word of Judas, the ultimate sinner, reborn as a child of Venus.” Inspiration ranges from Africa to 80’s NYC, from Bohannon to Quasimoto, from Norwegian New Wave to Acid House. With contributions by friends in the Oslo scene as hometown legend Dj Pål Strangefruit Nyhus, composer Ole-Henrik Moe, jazzpianist Bugge Wesseltoft, Sidiki Camara from Mali playing that beautiful Ngoni, and multi instrumentalist Ivar Snuten Winther, the album touches anything from blues, funk, disco and post-punk to IDM, acid house and electronic explorer music.

Recorded in 1959 at the legendary Van Gelder Studios in Hackensack, New Jersey, this is considered one of Donald Byrd’s finest LPs. The then 27 year old trumpeter had many LPs under his belt already, but this was his second on Blue Note, where he would stay for decades and release the best music of his career. Byrd had a fruitful run in the late ‘50s with the great baritone saxophonist Pepper Adams and here they are joined by long-time Thelonious Monk Quartet tenor-man Charlie Rouse, and a great rhythm section. After a rousing take on Sinatra’s “Witchcraft” the record features 3 strong Byrd originals and 2 compositions from the group’s pianist, Walter Davis, Jr. A hard bop classic from one of the strongest players of the era.

After last year's reissues of the Miami based label, Dancefloor, Emotional Rescue returns to the City's music with a look at the affiliated Konduko Records, with a collection of reissues from the acclaimed King Sporty. A Caribbean musician who found his way to Florida, Noel Williams enjoyed a three-decade career that took in dub, funk, soul and disco that included a number of club hits along the way. To start the series is some of his better-known 80's output, primarily around his in-house project The Ex Tras and three 1982 releases - beginning with the first official reissue of one of his greatest "hits" in Haven't Been Funked Enough. Initially known as a Jamaican born reggae artist, Williams gained his early tutelage at the legendary Clement Dodd's Studio One, first as studio assistant before making his recording debut as a Deejay in the late 60s. Making the short move north to Miami by the early 70s, he set up first Konduko and later Tashamba Records to release his own music and productions, as well as those of artists he signed and developed. As the decade progressed King Sporty and his roster's releases developed from soulful reggae singles to the disco tinged sound found on his own, now sought after, Deep Reggae Roots album. The move to a more club based sound continued as disco took hold, with subsequent albums Keep On Burning and Meet Me At The Disco tapping in to the nascent sound with some success and recognition. Working closely with Henry Stone's TK Disco, Konduko moved in to the 80s with electro and hip-hop increasingly employed as part of Williams' expanding fusion. With vocalists Connie Case and Johnny Griffin on board, a band - The Ex Tras - was formed around Williams dub tinged production. From the warped electro-dub intro, heavy bass, chopped guitar, a watertight rhythm and driving percussion, Haven't Been Funked Enough mixes many of Williams' traits with an incessant vocals repeated infinitum. Backed with the original - here remastered for heavy rotation - is the never before released Rapstrumental. A merging of the Instrumental found on the flip of the US pressed Konduko 12", with the Rap vocal version found on the UK import TMT release, this 'remix' offers an updated take on what has been the more discerning DJ's play. This is followed on the B-side by a very special version from the Idjut Boys' Dan Tyler, here in "Nad" moniker mode. After his much heralded remix, alongside Nick The Record, of Carl & Carol Jacob's Robot Jam for the label (ERC022), who to reinterpret such a classic quickly fell on this perfect fit and his long form 'Discomix' offered here is the ultimate rerub. Taking all the versions deep to his mixing well, Tyler's dub heavy reversion twists, turns, fuses, dissembles and reassembles in a reverb(erating) 10 minutes of electro-funk manner of heaven. As Mr Griffin says, "Lets unite, come on, let's live!

The late Nathaniel ‘Snoopy’ Dean is one of those many underrated southern soul and blues men who never reached great fame outside their home ground. His legacy is deeply treasured though by hardcore black music followers. In the late sixties he instigated the now very sought after group Third Guitar who recorded some great sides for the Rojac label out of NYC. He subsequently became a member of the Deep City Band and started recording under his own name. In the early to mid seventies Dean made five singles and an album Wiggle That Thing on Henry Stone's Blue Candle imprint which is being reissued here. The album - originally released in 1977 - contains a rare combination of deep, southern soul, funk and blues in such a way that the LP really does not fall straight in neither category. In the 80’s Snoopy Dean became a much in demand session musician as a guitarist in Miami and recorded at least two more albums that belong more in the blues and indie soul field. Unfortunately Snoopy Dean died in 1998 due to complications arising from diabetes. Still, it is this great LP Wiggle That Thing he will be always and best remembered for.

An original drum break record by Simon Allen (The New Mastersounds). This record has been created as a resource for sample-based music producers and provides a selection of 4/4 grooves and breaks: from minimalist to intricate, straight to swung, and also includes single hits of vintage kicks, snares, hi-hats, toms and cymbals, all recorded at ATA Records Studio A with 1960s analog recording gear onto 2” tape before being mixed and mastered for vinyl.Simon Allen is the drummer and co-founder of British funk quartet, The New Mastersounds. Since the band formed in Leeds, UK in 1999 he has played drums on all twelve of their studio albums and toured extensively across North America, Europe and Japan. On his adventures with NMS, Simon has jammed with funk and soul-jazz legends such as Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker, Art Neville, Lou Donaldson and Melvin Sparks, as well as fellow drummers Bernard Purdie and Zigaboo Modeliste, all of whose music has profoundly influenced his “deep pocket” approach to the drum kit.

Originally released on 2xCD in in 2008, the Supremes ''Supreme Rarities'' from the Motown Lost & Found Series collects from the depths of the label archives to showcase the rarities, the outtakes and the incomparable live recordings from this inimitable group of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. Listen to the story unfold from the innocent teenaged doo-wop of ''You Can Depend On Me'' from 1960 all the way through the slick, socially-conscious refinement of ''I'm Livin' in Shame'' from 1969. Aside a handful of forgotten vinyl releases decades ago, the majority of this material has not been released on vinyl. Until now!

The mid-1980s were a pivotal period for Don Cherry. Much of his energies had been devoted to co-op projects like Codona and Old and New Dreams and he also helped jumpstart the Leaders. The time being ripe to form his own ensemble, Cherry created Nu, a quintet with saxophonist/flutist Carlos Ward, bassist Mark Helias, percussionist Nana Vasconcelos and drummer Ed Blackwell. Live at the Bracknell Jazz Festival, 1986 confirms Nu to be an ensemble that vigorously and cogently articulated the various aspects of the multi-instrumentalist’s multicultural aesthetic. This exceptional concert recording fills a significant gap in Cherry’s discography. (from liner notes by Bill Shoemaker, taken from JAZZ TIMES)

West Coast Get Down's Ryan Porter will launch the 2CD / 3LP set The Optimist on World Galaxy, ushering in an instrumental body of work that encompasses the respite of Los Angeles jazz music. The Optimist pulls together veterans of the LA music scene, including West Coast Get Down alumni Kamasi Washington (tenor saxophone), Miles Mosley (upright bass), Cameron Graves (piano, fender rhodes), Tony Austin (drums), Jumaane Smith (trumpet), Edward Livingston (upright bass), Aaron Haggerty (drums), Brandon Coleman (fender rhodes), Dominic Therioux (electric bass), Robert Miller (drums), and Lyndon Rochelle (drums). The Optimist was recorded at Kamasi's parents house between 2008 and 2009, captured inside a small tiny basement area their crew called "The Shack." This was before The Epic catapulted the group into the highest stratospheres of jazz music and feature associations started to populate through the world of Kendrick Lamar. Ryan Porter and The West Coast Get were just as active through this era, carving out weekly shows through local jazz clubs and touring with some of the biggest names on the circuit.Every person featured on The Optimist were fully committed to the execution of decade defining jazz music, charging through the 21st century with the hopes of finding the platform that would elevate their music to the masses. This would unfold in ways nobody could have predicted, ushering in a transition of optimism and hope, to that of success and proven longevity. This is a mirror of the inspiration and energetic reprise President Obama provided Ryan and millions of others at the time, adding a sonic memory point to one of the most important transitions the United States has taken politically.Ryan Porter has spread his craft to the masses for decades, included on critically acclaimed albums such as the Original Netflix Series soundtrack The Get Down, Push The Sky Away from Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Epic LP and Truth EP from Kamasi Washington, To Pimp A Butterfly from Kendrick Lamar, and many more. The Optimist represents these albums and the incubation period that's continually reverberated through his career, seasoned with the brilliance these individuals build on as a unified musical cell. The Optimist was executed with the same fire, passion, and technicality the group carries with them on stage and through every album since, serving as an important foundation piece to the legacy and story of LA's most revered jazz collective, the West Coast Get Down.

Soundway Records presents the debut EP from The Mauskovic Dance Band – a heady, tropical blend of cumbia, Afro-Caribbean rhythms and space disco, resulting in a vibrant hypnotic groove destined for bustling dancefloors. The Mauskovic Dance Band is the brainchild of the Amsterdam-based producer and musician, Nicola Mauskovic. A seasoned drummer, he finds himself constantly in demand – as part of Turkish psychedelic outfit Altin Gün, a recent tour with the revival of Zambian legends W.I.T.C.H., and a worldwide tour with psych-pop artist Jacco Gardner, with whom he then went on to form the dance-oriented duo Bruxas (released on Dekmantel). Throughout this hectic schedule Nic still found time to begin studio experiments that would eventually lead to several 7” singles, released on Swiss label Bongo Joe Records in 2017 under the name “The Mauskovic Dance Band”.Following this, he tapped long-time collaborators Donnie Mauskovic (vocals, keys, effects), Em Nix Mauskovic (guitar, synth, percussion), and Mano Mauskovic (bass) to make the jump from record to stage. Soon they caught the ear of fabled underground Cumbia producer Juan Hundred, who left his home on a Caribbean island to join the band on drums. With each band member of varying heritage, the group draws inspiration from diverse genres: primarily Afro-Colombian styles such as champeta, palenque, cumbia and the picó soundsystem culture, as well as the Afro-Disco and No-Wave scenes in their current base of Amsterdam. The city’s hotbed of underground producers has also brought an electronic edge to the band, with vintage drum machines and synthesisers effortlessly melding with Afro-Latin rhythms and slick guitar riffs to create a contemporary sound rich with cultural influence.Having toured extensively through Europe in 2017 as a staple of festival stages and clubs, The Mauskovic Dance Band continues to build exciting momentum – with appearances at Eurosonic Noorderslag 2018 and an extensive tour of the Netherlands coinciding with the launch of the EP.

The 20th volume of our flagship Eccentric Soul series has all the boxes checked: Guntoting, skip-tracing record producers, child stars, rip-offs, the “World’s Greatest Bail Bondsman,” swindles, soaring falsettos, and a dwindling rust-belt cityscape offering mere glimpses of hope before the record industry escaped for the coasts. Helmed by the O’Jays Bobby Massey, Saru was a creative vortex that pulled Cuyahoga County’s greatest talent in, making a strong case for Cleveland to contend with Detroit, Philly, and Memphis as America’s soul music’s capital. Includes obscure and unknown sides from the Out of Sights, the Elements, Pandella Kelly, David Peoples, Sir Stanley, the Ponderosa Twins + 1, Ba-Roz, Bobby Dukes, and of course, the O’Jays.

Obscure Dutch private pressing from 1977. Laid-back instrumental psychedelic / progressive sounds with jazz-funk-groove and abstract / experimental / Latin-indigenous touches. Stoned homemade atmosphere with treated / distorted electric & acoustic guitars, flute, electric piano, primitive drum machines / homemade electronics...Much in the vein of the experimental-underground scene of France & Germany during the early 70s but actually recorded and released in Holland.Wild Havana was the project of guitar player Johan Smith, helped by his brother Cor on flute. Influenced by artists like Zappa and Herbie Hancock, Johan recorded the “Wild Havana” album at his home studio on a 4-track, using effect devices developed by himself, like a modified proto-drum machine taken from a Hammond organ. He also used effects like phase shifter, chorus, etc and experimented with putting wool on the guitar strings and electric effects on the mandolin. The result sounded like nothing else at the time.Buried for many years, we’re excited to bring to life this unique album.
