Ulysses Crockett studied classical piano from 6 to 14 years old, adding alto saxophone and flute at 16 years old while attending Oakland California's McClymonds High graduating in 1956 as student body president and Valedictorian entering Stanford University in the fall of 1956.During the Lawrence Ferlinghetti Bay area beatnik era (circa 1957-1960), Ulysses' group was known as The Latin Jazz Quintet which included an early female bongo drummer named Joyce Zavaleta. Joyce had an extensive vinyl LP collection of afro-cuban records including compositions and performances of legendary bassist Israel 'Cachao' López and international known singer Celia Cruz. Joyce met U.C. Berkeley Student John Miller and taught him the Cuban piano styles. The regular members of the Afro-Blue Persuasion band consisted of John Miller - piano, Harald Haynes - congas, Robert Belinksy - drums, Ulysses Crockett - vibraphone, and Robert Bing Nathan - upright contrabass. At nineteen years old each, bassist Paul Jackson (who appears with genius composer, performer and pianist Herbie Hancock) and tenor flautist Robert Harvey were both serving in the U.S. Army station located in the San Francisco base known as the Presidio. On weekends, both Paul and Robert would sit in with the Afro-Blue Persuasion band."Live at Haight Levels" is the one and only recorded live performance by the Afro-Blue Persuasion. Finally, the songs are going to see the light of the day after 52 years! This is afro-cuban jazz at its very best! A stunning treasure rarely to be found - unless it's on Mo-Jazz!

Nobody could have suspected the path that Clarence Henry Reidwould take during the 1960s. During this time he worked as asinger/songwriter and producer for the likes of KC & TheSunshine Band, Bobby Byrd, Gwen McCrae, and various others. He would also release his own compositions, including the deepsoul classic "Nobody But You Babe", which would become a samplingfavorite of KRS-One, Erykah Badu, DMX, and more. ThoughReid maintained a reputation as a consummate professionalamong the romantic soul crowd, outside of his day-job he turneda complete 180, writing and performing humorous, deliberatelyraunchy and sexually-explicit parodies of songs. These parodieswould be relegated strictly to friends at parties, and wouldn't seea wide audience until the 1970s hit.In 1971 Reid would gather a collection of studio musicians, including famed R&B sidemen Timmy Thomas & Benny Latimoreon keys, and Little Beaver on guitar, to finally commit theseparodies to wax. In order to protect his identity as a songwriterReid took on the stage name Blowfly, and dressed as a comicbook super villain for live performances and photos. From therehe would release numerous studio albums of similarly crudeparodies throughout the 70s and 80s, which were enormouslypopular as party records. These records would also go on tobecome a wealth of sampling fodder for artists like Jurassic 5, ThePharcyde, DJ Shadow, Eazy-E, and many more, as well as leadReid to collaborate with artists as varied as soul contemporaryKing Coleman, to former Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra, toganja-centric rapper Afroman.1978 saw the release of Blowfly's Zodiac Party, a loosely definedconcept album which framed Reid's explicit renditions around thetheme of the Greek Zodiac symbols. Reid had already coveredthis topic earlier on the similarly titled Blowfly Zodiac, but ZodiacParty differentiates itself from its lack of parodies, instead placingReid in the center of a raucous shindig with his backing band, schmoozing effortlessly with excited partygoers, curious to knowtheir signs. It's a singularly surreal entry in the parodist's catalog, but a no less entertaining 70s party record.

The Brazilian born master guitarist Bola Sete (literally translated to “Seven Ball” and a snooker reference) originally studied music at the Conservatory of Rio while playing in his own jazz sextet and small samba combos. Sete spent time in Italy and also absorbed jazz influences as he was a avid fan of Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt. It was these influences, along with the local samba and bossa nova flavor he was absorbing on a daily basis in Brazil that form the foundation of his sound. This record, his debut album from 1957, combines those influences beautifully in a perfect jazz samba setting, a fully formed artist who had been a professional musician for years before releasing this album. Sete counted among his admirers and fans such disparate legends as Dizzy Gillespie and John Fahey, and one listen to this masterful debut will tell you why. An absolute essential on 180 gram vinyl.

Revolutionary, spiritual jazz bandleader, drummer, and activist from Houston. This is the definitive box set of his four classic albums with his Lightmen band, each mastered from the original tapes, expanded with bonus tracks and alternate mixes.Bubbha Thomas had toured America with R&B revues, served as a session musician for Peacock and Back Beat Records, and played straight ahead jazz with legends before the political and social upheaval of the late 1960s led him to a path first charted by Coltrane. His first set of self-issued albums predated the deep-set, maverick jazz issued by the likes of Tribe and Strata East and were a harbinger of best of the 1970s jazz underground. Over the course of the decade, he contributed to a collective voice of resistance to the musical and cultural status quo that is just beginning to be understood. Each album contains 2LPs and comes with a download card for WAV files, and footage of live performances included. Booklet detailing Thomas and his band’s remarkable trajectory also included in the set. Album details below.FREE AS YOU WANNA BE (NA5150)Free As You Wanna Be predates the deep-set, maverick jazz issued by the likes of Tribe and Strata East and is a harbinger of best of the 1970s jazz underground, a collective voice of resistance to the musical and cultural status quo. Presented in both stereo and previously unissued mono mixesFANCY PANTS (NA5156)Fancy Pants is Thomas’s second LP with his Lightmen band and is a more introspective, meditative affair; it stands alongside the best of the early 1970s jazz underground, from Phil Cohran to Phil Ranelin toSun Ra. Presented in both stereo and previously unissued, extended mono mixes.ENERGY CONTROL CENTER (NA5157)Energy Control Center, Thomas’s third LP with his Lightmen band is his masterpiece: deep-set, maverick jazz that smolders in the embers of a cultural revolution. This is a highpoint amongst the best of the 1970s, and this version of the album contains second disc with bonus tracks: unreleased alternate takes, including two versions of the Spiritual Jazz classic “All Praises To Allah,” and the two singles Thomas produced for poet and activist Thomas Meloncon.COUNTRY FRIED CHICKEN (NA5158) Country Fried Chicken, Thomas’s fourth LP with his Lightmen band and the last of his classic period, is his most accessible, a mixture of funk and spiritual jazz. a sexy und HHV präsentieren das sagenhafte Erfolgsalbum "Tatortreiniger Soundtracks" von Carsten Erobique Meyer in einer zweiten - bei uns exklusiv erhältlichen - Farbversion. Carsten Meyer verkörpert in diesem Fall jede Band.

With the fifth release and the first 7inch, we turn our attention to Brazil. Finally, one might think, since it’s an open secret that we have a soft spot for music from the leading coffee exporter in the world. So, when Brazilian DJ, record collector and digger extraordinaire Junior Santos brought this Celso Rubinstein 7-inch EP (called «Compacto» in Brazil) to the our attention he hadn’t to do a lot of persuading to have NOAJ reintroduce this beautiful piece of music to fans around the world some 36 years after its first appearance. Born in Brazil to a family of Holocaust survivors, Celso Rubinstein’s career as a singer allowed him to take residency in several countries including Spain, Portugal, Israel and Britain. He performed as an artist in numerous clubs and supported other artists as backing vocalist. In 1982 he booked studio time at Chico Batera’s studio in Rio De Janeiro to record two songs for an intentional debut album.

Transparent Orange Vinyl! Durand Jones & the Indications aren't looking backwards. Helmed by foil vocalists in Durand Jones and drummer Aaron Frazer, the Indications conjure the dynamism of Jackie Wilson, Curtis Mayfield, AND the Impressions. Even with an aesthetic steeped in the golden, strings-infused dreaminess of early `70s soul, the Indications' sophomore LP, American Love Call, is planted firmly in the present, with the urgency of this moment in time. The Indications' 2016 self-titled debut was the product of friends who met as students at Indiana University in Bloomington, In., recorded for $452.11, including a case of beer. American Love Call, the band's sophomore LP is instead the record the Indications dreamed of making, fleshed out with strings, backing vocals, and a newfound confidence in songwriting. Blending a slew of influences from years spent crate-digging, guitarist Blake Rhein says the Indications approach songs in the same way hip-hop producers do, as likely to pull inspiration from `70s folk-rock or classic R&B as they are Nas' Illmatic. "Did I expect to do this shit once I got out of college? Hell no," Jones relays, laughing. "Totally not. But this is what God is telling me to do - move and groove. So I'm gonna stay in my lane."

Eddie Palmieri, at 83 years of age, is performing and producing his best work. Mi Luz Mayor is his second salsa release of 2018, and is a tribute to his late wife, Iraida. (The selections are all songs that she enjoyed). In addition to the usual all star cast of players, Mi Luz Mayor features the great Gilberto Santa Rosa, Herman Olivera, and none other than Carlos Santana. The CD include a 12 page booklet with liner notes and credits in English and Spanish. This work is dedicated to Iraida, my late wife, the love of my life. Here I present to you the music that Iraida and I enjoyed in our youth. I would play this music in our home often, during the Holidays and on special occasions. We would dance to this music, but there were also times where the music spoke for us. Music was the constant force that touched our hearts and would heal any wounds that life sent our way. Ultimately, these songs represent our love story. Selecting each composition and writing new music helped me work through my grief after she passed away in 2014. Because this music is in her honor, everything from start to finish had to be of the highest caliber and I am proud to say that it is just that. If Iraida were here today, I know she would want you to know that life wasn’t always easy. She worked tirelessly and selflessly for the needs of our family - there truly wasn’t anything she didn’t do or wouldn’t have done for us. The career trajectory of a musician is difficult at best and like anyone in this business, there were many ups and downs. And when I was down, she always had an unrelenting drive to see me through my darkest days. I, in turn, did the best I could to be there during hers. She was my anchor, my one foot in reality. She kept me grounded and helped keep me on the right path in hopes that I would reach my highest potential. She was my life. And I was hers. Reliving this music allows me to sit again in her presence, to visit memories of our time together. I share this with you now and hope you will feel a connection to her, to another era and to me. I would also like to acknowledge of the profound respect, admiration and impact both Rene Hernández and Ray Santos have had on my musical life. Their arranging skills show careful study and the diligence I endeavor to carry over into my own arrangements. It is the platform from which I rarely move, where the historical integrity of the Cuban structures are preserved and expounded upon – that is the excitement that drives my creative process. I am also grateful for the contributions and arranging talent of Jose Madera – I truly believe he is an inspiration to the next generation of arrangers. As for the musicians…I am surrounded by Chiefs, each a master of their own instrument. I am incredibly grateful to all the musicians that are on this recording and of course, the special guests, Mr. Carlos Santana, Mr. Gilberto Santa Rosa and “La Voz del Caribe,” Herman Olivera. And a heartfelt thank you to Brian Lynch for the coda input on the new arrangement of Mi Congo. These gentlemen know they all live in my heart and pay no rent. My motto for this CD is “Cuidado!” Eddie Palmieri Written in collaboration with Ileana Palmieri-Campos

Johnny’s Disk Record is an independent jazz label run by the owner of jazz cafe Kaiunbashi No Johnny located in Rikuzentakata city in Iwate prefecture, Japan. The legendary label released a string of albums of high quality but down-to-earth music, spanning from modern jazz, avant-garde jazz to left-field pop. Albums such as “farewell my johnny / left alone” and “aya’s samba” has reached cult status among fans as some of the best works to come out of the japanese jazz scene. Another japanese jazz classic, Aya’s Samba was a debut effort by bassist Eiji Nakayama, who played as part of elvin jones’ jazz machine and toured with Don Friedman. This album is an important release in the johnny’s disk catalogue, not only because it is the first ever release, but also because the owner hearing the band play was the reason why the label came to be. “Aya’s Samba” is a mellow jazz samba in minor key that’s considered a japanese jazz classic. Slow ballad “yellow living” is drenched in melancholy with emotive keys and sax notes, while the dreamy “sea sea town” impresses with a captivating, expressive sax solo. The 4 tracker ends with “far-away road,” an uptempo tune with rhythmic keys.

Elvin Jones' connection to the John ColtraneQuartet is inescapable, but it shouldn't be the onlydefining feature of his career. After all, Jonesexpanded the role of the jazz percussionist in thepost-bop era, and helped bridge the gap to moreavant-garde styles of drumming through hisvirtuostic style. This style continued to developand grow after departing the Coltrane Quartet(Due to displeasure over Coltrane's addition of asecond drummer) and going solo. Before his departure however, Jones was alreadya prolific figure in his own rite, having alreadyperformed with the likes of Miles Davis andCharles Mingus long before even connecting withJohn Coltrane. He also regularly collaborated withbassist and fellow Coltrane Quintet compatriotJimmy Garrison, forming the recording collectivethe Elvin Jones/Jimmy Garrison Sextet, recordingseveral albums together. 1964's Illumination! wasone such album, which featured the rhythmsection pair joined by McCoy Tyner, also from theColtrane Quintet, on piano, as well as strongsession turns from Sonny Simmons(Alto Sax/English Horn), Charles Davis(Bari Sax), and William Lasha (Clarinet/Flute).A highly sought after set of advanced hardbop, featuring some of Jones' most powerfulpercussion chops.

Nigerian composer Hama presents a groundbreaking album of traditional electronic desert folk songs, hovering somewhere between early 90s techno and synthwave. Nomadic herding ballads, ancient caravan songs, and ceremonial wedding chants are all re-imagined intopieces seemingly lifted from a Saharan 1980s sci-fi soundtrack or score to a Tuareg video game. With a deep love and respect, Hama effortlessly takes back and re-appropriates fourth-world ethnoambient music.

Sultry r&b solo artist Harriet Brown is back with a new batch of fully-realized future funk, a slow-burning dispatch from a dayglo dance floor. The Los Angeles by-way-of-the Bay artist honed his musical chops in church, the birthplace of so many soulful sirens. His first project, New Era EP came out in 2014, setting off a firestorm of critical and fan adulation. Who was this bowl cut rocking, falsetto dropping, shiny suit man?He followed up with a bombastic debut album, Contact, an expertly crafted, extraterrestrial soul rumination on the ways we fail to connect, restart, and try again. It was also a transitional album. Made between the Bay and LA, it’s about the electricity of new connections, the distance of old friends.Mall of Fortune is his second full-length album, an airtight meditation on anxiety, paranoia and indecisiveness – decision paralysis and the free-flowing guilt that follows. The bowl cut is gone, but the shine is intact.

However, with our new remaster and with added liner notes from Chicago music archivist Steven Emmerman, their message of love and spiritual unity can now be revealed and appreciated worldwide.NOTE: The original LP was released with both sides approaching 30 mins in length. This is extraordinarily long for an LP and as such the quality of sound will suffer during playback. We have therefore taken the opportunity to release the album as 2 x 12" sides, each cut at 45rpm, and the sound quality has greatly improved as a result.

La Candela del Río is the debut album by Paris-based Venezuelan quartet Insólito UniVerso. In the space of 8 tracks, the band fuses traditional Venezuelan styles, such as joropo, merengue caraqueño, or tambores de San Millán with psych, chanson, and contemporary electronics. Co-produced by The Heliocentrics' Malcolm Catto, the record shows two distinct sides; on the one hand there's euphoric music that begs to be danced to, while on the other there's melancholy, mystery and devotion.

Hot-on-the-heels of their performance on BBC 6 Music, for Gilles Peterson's ‘UK Jazz Special’, at the hallowed Maida Vale studios (alongside Nubya Garcia, Joe Armon-Jones and Fatima), Ishmael Ensemble bring their Bristol-inspired ‘Severn Songs’ project to a triumphant finale. ‘Severn Songs 3’ pays homage the mighty river itself, in both title and mood. Field recordings from the banks of another iconic river - the Ganges - made by keyboardist and co-writer Jake Spurgeon meander in and out of focus, whilst celestial percussion ushers in the full-bodied tone of celebrated jazz trumpeter Yazz Ahmed's horn. The track climaxes in true Ishmaelian fashion with a whirlwind of pulsating synthesizers, crashing drums and hypnotic brass flurries, before easing back into the dulcet rhythm of oars lapping through water. On the flip, a reprise takes the listener on a much gentler ride. However, the tension and dynamics of this twin version are still very much apparent. Throughout the release, an array of new instruments open up in Cunningham's armoury; most notably bass clarinet, alto-flute and the sarod – leaving the listener just a few strings shy of a full orchestral experience. As a whole, the ‘Severn Songs’ project has seen Cunningham develop an already diverse palette into something more focused. Tiptoeing between the current British jazz boom and Bristol's rich musical ancestry, the group have found a truly unique and refreshing voice. ‘Severn Songs 3’ follows media praise, radio airplay and DJ support for the first two 7”s in the series, from the likes of Dan Snaith (Caribou), Gilles Peterson, Tom Ravenscroft, DJ Mag, Complex, Self-Titled, The Vinyl Factory and XLR8R. Prior to that, 2017 saw Ishmael Ensemble’s first EP ‘Songs for Knotty’ released on Banoffee Pies, followed by an official remix of Carl Craig’s ‘The Melody’ for Infiné. With rumours of an album ‘round the corner, a busy touring schedule and continued support from international tastemakers, 2019 is shaping up to be an ascendant year for this talented producer and his Bristolian troupe.

Along with the likes of Charles Earland, Dan Fogel, and Larry Young, Jimmy McGriff represented anew wave of eclectic, and highly prolific soul-jazzorganists to emerge during the 1960s and 1970s.Unlike his contemporaries however, McGriffas often been unfairly forgotten in the annals ofjazz history, despite being highly acclaimed amongcritics for his creative vitality, his deftness inadapting to the fusion of genres, and his distinctlysmooth and polished play-style. Nonetheless,he maintained a strong cult following throughouthis career, and became venerated for his workwith the Hammond B-3 organ in his hometownof Philadelphia.1971's Groove Grease is a prime example not justof Jimmy McGriff's skills on the jazz organ, but ofhis versatility as an artist. A largely improvisedsession that serves as a seamless transition fromhis classic hard bop sounds into the jazz-funksounds of the 1970s, which were growing inpopularity. Alongside a collective of sessionmusicians, which included heavy-hitters likeHorace Ott on electric piano, Everett Barksdale andWayne Bennett on guitar, and Richard Davis onbass, McGriff applies a funky sheen to a selectionof jazzy covers and originals on Groove Grease.Features his take on compositions byHenry Mancini, Eddie Haywood, Sammy Fain, andmany more.

It’s been nearly five decades since Joe McPhee assembled a group of musicians to perform the weekend concerts that would become Nation Time, his debut LP. It was December 1970, thirty-one-year-old McPhee was inspired by Amiri Baraka’s poem ‘It’s Nation Time,’ and the students at Vassar College didn’t know what hit them. ‘What time is it?’ shouted the bandleader. ‘C’mon, you can do better than that. What time is it?!’ The music on Nation Time came out of the fertile, but little-known creative jazz scene in Poughkeepsie, New York, McPhee’s home base. Two bands were deployed, one with a funky free foundation featuring guitar and organ, the other consisting of a more standard jazz formation with two drummers and the brilliant Mike Kull at the piano. Across the concert and the next afternoon’s audience-less recording session, the band was ignited by McPhee’s passion and his gorgeous post-Coltrane / post-Pharoah tenor. On ‘Shakey Jake,’ they hit a James Brown groove filtered through Archie Shepp, while the sidelong title track is as searching and poignant today as it was during its heyday. Originally released in 1971 on CjR, an imprint started expressly to document McPhee’s music, Nation Time has a sense of urgency and inspiration. Additional material from those December days would later appear on Black Magic Man, Hat Hut’s first release. In fact, the first four records on this seminal Swiss label all featured McPhee.

Drum-machine soul, funk, disco and boogie from Buffalo, NYC. Rare 7” singlesand previously unreleased tracks presented as an album for the first time.In the early ’70s, Jessie Key and Sylvester Cleary – two passionate idealists living in Buffalo, New York – formeda close friendship based on a mutual mission to better their city. The Attica State Prison Riot of 1971 was aburning memory, and the Arthur vs. Nyquist lawsuit – brought against the City of Buffalo for creating andmaintaining a racially segregated school system – was on the docket. Key was once a cotton-laborer inMississippi, who journeyed north for school where he met his kindred spirit, Cleary. The two struck up an intensefriendship, bought a drum machine and recorded their first 45, “A Man,” a paean to self-actualization and BlackAmerican empowerment, which they custom pressed and issued privately.Dozens of recordings followed over a decade long span, issued on local labels and warehoused on cassettetapes. Perennial optimists, Key & Cleary tried any – perhaps every! – path they could demarcate in hopes offorwarding their agenda of self-effected, positive change. They formed Buffalo’s first minority-owned constructioncompany, opened a health food restaurant in a building previously occupied by a fast food chain, and evenconcocted a candy bar called “The Buffalo Treat,” which they manufactured and sold locally. Eventually theystarted their own label, Buffalo’s Reflection. On it they released their masterpiece, “What It Takes To Live,” asought-after disco and Northern Soul classic, which previously appeared on Now-Again’s Soul Cal anthology. This album collates the breadth of Key & Cleary’s recordings from 1970 until the mid 1980s, both the songsissued on rare 7” singles and previously unreleased. It presents a conjoined musical vision and tells the story ofa duo years ahead of their time, both musically and culturally. Love Is The Way was their ethos – their goal wasto enlighten humanity and to bend history in a more loving direction through communion.

Huddie William Ledbetter, better known to the world as Leadbelly, was one of the most celebrated guitarists and vocalists of 20th century American music. He introduced the world to many traditional folk and gospel songs and his versions remain some of the most well known and beautiful ever cut to tape. Born on a plantation in Louisiana in 1888, Leadbelly got his start as a teenager performing in the red-light district of Shreveport. "Discovered" by the legendary folklorists John and Alan Lomax while Leadbelly was serving time in Angola state prison for attempted murder. They recorded him while in prison and in 1934, at the age of 46, made these recordings, the first commercial recordings of his career. Featuring a wide repertoire of folk and blues songs along with his powerful voice and unique guitar style, these tracks are absolute cornerstones of American folk and blues music and some of the greatest tracks he ever cut.

Recorded in Houston in 1954 and released on the New York Herald label, these classic recordings of Hopkins feature him on amplified guitar with bass and drums. These are not the folk-blues many associate with Hopkins, these are raw and glorious R&B tinged blues recordings way more for the juke joints than the folk festivals. Lightnin' Hopkins is one of the most crucial blues musicians in history, and these are his most rocking and raucous sides ever!

1979 Linda Williams gold from the Arista archives gets a much welcomed official, remastered reissue. With an intro that does exactly as its title suggests, ‘Elevate Our Minds’ became a huge rare groove record in the mid to late ‘80s. Produced by the late, great Richard Evans who worked with the very best in the business, from Gene Chandler and Marlena Shaw, to Ramsey Lewis and Ahmad Jamal, it’s supremely arranged, blending a Bossa Nova beat and trumpet trills with Linda’s distinctly New York authenticity that comes through in the vocals. Like a trip to the blissful beaches of Rio whilst bringing a touch of the New York disco glam along for the ride. Exotic yet familiar, all in the same breath. On the flip, ‘City Living’, a straight up New York disco killer - oozing with funk, dripping in brass blasts, off beat hats and spruced up synths, it’s a primetime ode to the hustle and bustle of the city. Williams’ glorious tones, assisted by a majestic troupe of backing singers, glisten alongside the classy drumming and polished bass badness that lays behind it.

Mance Lipscomb - born Beau De Glen Lipscomb near Navasota, Texas in 1895, and nicknamed Mance (short for emancipation) by a childhood friend - was an incredible guitarist and blues singers who didn't make a recording until the age of 65. Discovered during the folk and blues revival of the late '50s and early '60s Lipscomb would record regularly until his death in 1976 at the age of 80. A tenant farmer for most of his life, Lipscomb was the son of a former slave father and half-Choctaw Indian mother. He began playing guitar early in his life and spent most of his life performing at "Saturday night suppers" hosted by local friends or, often, by himself and his wife. After his discovery, Lipscomb would go on to perform at the first ever Monterey Folk Festival in 1963 as well as at numerous clubs of the folk-revival, most notable The Ash Grove in Los Angeles. Collected here are his earliest recordings, from 1960, and they are some of the most beautiful and transcendent of Texas folk-blues. Crucial recordings from one of the greatest individual voices of the folk and blues revival.

The live performance which would be the focus of Miles Davis' 1965 album, My Funny Valentine, was the second of two live sets recorded at the recently built Philharmonic Hall in New York. The concert, consisting primarily of slow and mid-tempo numbers, presented a tense and awkward atmosphere to Davis and the latest iteration of his quintet; they were embarking on their highest prestige gig at the time, right on the cusp of the assassination of president John F. Kennedy. Tensions were so high that by the end of the concert they believed that they had botched their performance, and bombed the entire show.Fortunately Davis and his quintet were wrong. Far from bombing, the recordings on My Funny Valentine were critically applauded, with Davis biographer Ian Carr going on to call the album "...one of the very greatest recordings of a live concert."My Funny Valentine features inspired performances by Davis and his crew, who brought solemn depth to compositions by Cole Porter, Richard Rodgers, Victor Young, Jimmy Van Heusen, and a live take on "All Blues", the lone Davis piece on the record. My Funny Valentine would not only rank as one of his finest live recordings, but it would be his last collaboration with saxophonist George Coleman, ushering in the arrival of his "Second Great Quintet" period.

Miles Davis and his electric group of the early 70s is some of the most innovative and important jazz music ever set to tape. While the studio recordings are amazing, they often pale in comparison to the loose, improvisational and fiery heights that the group could reach in front of a live audience (as was captured on Live-Evil, In Concert, and Miles Davis At Fillmore, among others). This set from September of 1972 is no exception. Recorded just prior to the release of On The Corner, this stellar performance features tracks from that classic as well as Jack Johnson, and Bitches Brew. Featuring the great guitar work of his live band staple, Reggie Lucas, and the phenomenal saxophonist Carlos Garnett, this is early 70s electric Miles at its finest, a brilliant radio broadcast.

Nick Waterhouse grew up in a coastal town near Long Beach, CA. It was a serene setting: the ocean stretching out for miles to the North and South, manicured lawns, two-story homes, long swathes of concrete highway, fast food chains and mega malls. He was there for two decades. Then, he left. He found a home in his early 20s in San Francisco, working at record stores alongside a collective of likeminded young crate-diggers and 45 collectors. And then he started making his own records: “Time’s All Gone” in 2012, “Holly” in 2014, and “Never Twice” in 2016. These were evocative albums, steeped in a perfectionism and clarity of vision that informed every choice, from the studios to the players, the arrangements to the album art. Everything, deliberately designed and purposeful, bubbling over with power and feeling. And as those records rolled out into the world, Waterhouse found a dedicated audience of his own as well as a bevy of influential champions and collaborators, including garage-rock mystic Ty Segall, retro-futurist R&B bandleader Leon Bridges and the LA-based quartet Allah-Las, whose first two albums he meticulously produced and played on. There is a “Waterhouse Sound” and it comes from both the man and the method — recording everything on magnetic tape, through analog equipment, and playing live (!), eyeball to eyeball, whenever possible. Now, he’s finished his fourth album. He’s calling it “Nick Waterhouse.” And whether intentional or not, it is perhaps his most reflective — and reflexive — album, employing all of the mature production techniques learned throughout his professional career while retaining a viscous edge that allows it to land with colossal impact — more raw, heavy and overtly confrontational than anything he’s made before. “Nick Waterhouse” was recorded at the finest working studio in Los Angeles, Electro Vox Recorders, and co-produced by Paul Butler (The Bees, Michael Kiwanuka, Devendra Banhart), the master of all things warm, rich and wooly. Nick’s songs here are personal, but personal in the way that “Please Mr. Postman,” “What’s Going On” and “Cathy’s Clown” are — intimate, direct, yet still malleable enough for listeners to suffuse their own life stories into the mix. The album is thick with talented players, including Andres Rentaria, Paula Henderson and the staggering, howling saxophone of Mando Dorame. All of the new Waterhouse songs sound big. Brawny and muscular. The lyrics are suspicious, outraged and, at times, very vulnerable (muscle is just flesh, after all). Waterhouse uses an economy of words to deliver complex, coded messages. He offers up equal parts criticism of the time we live in and innate human flaws. He paints relationships under the cover of darkness, slashing through neo-noir fantasies that are romantic, blood-spattered and bracingly aware of the powerlessness felt among people, amid the rapid onslaught of commercialism and technological progress. And, as has become his signature, he throws in a tune written by a close friend. On this record, he covers “I Feel an Urge Coming On” in tribute to the song’s author, Nick’s own mentor and collaborator Joshie Jo Armstead, who wrote music with Ray Charles and sang as both an Ikette and Raelette in the ’60s and ’70s. He’s four albums in, but it makes sense that this specific record is the one that takes his name. You can really here Nick on this one. Not just the band. Not just the songs. Not just the sound. HIM. You can hear his mind at work. His passion. His focus. More importantly, you can feel it.

Orgone is one of the most exciting bands in the new generation of funk bands; led by the powerhouse vocals of Adryon de León, Orgone recalls such legendary groups as Rufus and Sly & The Family Stone at their best. Their new album Reasons illuminates a band hitting its stride, capturing the raw power and refined sensibilities that defines Orgone. From the a cappella opening of “All Good Things” to the dance floor filler “Easy Love,” Reasons packs a punch. Vocal harmonies channeling late 70s Fleetwood Mac to synth lines evoking Bernie Worrell's involvement in the Talking Heads, 'Reasons' brings in a new set of influences on ORGONE's 10th studio album while maintaining their classic analog sound.De León is front and center on Reasons, and she does not disappoint evoking the deep soulfulness of Chaka Khan and the bedroom sweetness of Minnie Ripperton. Her versatile vocal performance firmly places her in the top echelon of soul singers today.Reasons is another solid step in a long and storied career. Orgone’s accolades are too long to list in entirety. The well-traveled band has released albums on Ubiquity, Shanachie, and Colemine Records and served as the studio band on hits like Alicia Key’s “Teenage Love Affair” and Cee Lo Green’s Grammy-winning “Fool For You.”

You might know Peter Matson as the founder, frontman, and guitarist of NYC-based breakout band Underground System, who recently released a debut album of otherworldly global-dance anthems (on Soul Clap's self titled imprint) and have been touring their live show at venues around the US. Matson's roots, while nestled in worldly live sounds, also firmly grip deeper dance music styles, though they manage to still pack a refreshingly eclectic energy. His debut EP 'Short Trips' for Brooklyn's Bastard Jazz connects the dots between his time moving bodies in the club as a DJ, as well as in his group as a guitarist and producer, though this record is better suited for a woozy club floor. "Roma Norte" kicks off the wax with its soulful cocktail of latin-house styles and hypnotic basslines that would elevate the opening hours of any club night. Deep house legend and Freerange Records boss Jimpster provides an ethereal, creative remix that delves into afro-house territory. "3AM to Sete" is a warm and bubbly deep house tune that sounds like something you might hear late-night in a South London nightclub—it's all warm bass vibrations and subtle synth explorations. Matson's seasoned instrumental skills shine on "126," another breezy synth jam with just enough punch to make you move, eyes closed, of course. 'Short Trips' sounds like the work of someone not interested in where one scene ends and the other begins, but instead, where they connect.

* Back on vinyl OFFICIALLY for the first time since 1970* Reissue of this RARE Psychedelic Funk-Rock album* Comes with insert containing exclusive liner notes. In the midst of the musical revolution of 1968, a 24-year old kid named Warren Adams put together an eight-piece band by the name of Purple Image. When most African-American bands in the Cleveland, Ohio area turned to R&B and soul music, Purple Image played mind-bending psychedelic funk rock. The band blasted out a thumping psychedelic sound much like the post-Hendrix black rock of their Detroit counterparts ‘Death’ and ‘Black Merda’.As the band grew in popularity, a first single was recorded and “Marching to a Different Drummer” was released on Map City records. With the help of a popular Cleveland DJ the song became a number one hit and paved the way for public performances at the Cleveland auditorium, where they opened for acts from the likes of Steppenwolf and Aretha Franklin.Wasting no time, the band started the recording of their first (and only) album, the self-titled LP ‘Purple Image’. This obscure album recorded on Map Records in 1970 has since then risen to the status of cult because of its scarcity and the musical orientation. An energetic, powerful blend of acid rock and fusion, frantic Coltrane-ish sax, a blistering amalgam of rock, soul and funk … it sounds best when the volume is cranked! The album at its heaviest moments is as heavy as The Stooges on Fun House…it's hard, mean and direct, and still ultimately groove-based. The band’s unique psychedelic sound is an attestation to the times in which they were immersed, and a reflection of their own reality. This album is an outstanding example of psychedelic rock and funk fusion that shouldn't be missed. Together with their (few) contemporaries the band lay the foundations for future African-American crossover acts such as Fishbone, Bad Brains & Living Colour.Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the official vinyl reissue of this RARE (original copies tend to go for large amounts on the secondary market) super-heavy 1970 psych-funk album. Now finally back available as a limited vinyl edition (500 copies) complete with the original artwork and exclusive liner notes/pictures provided by Purple Image’s founding member Warren Adams and family.

„You Could Be Home Now“. Seit längerem lebt Milo in Los Angeles.

Born in 1941, Rob Franken played in more than just Dutch jazz-circles. People who worked with him describe him as a slightly introvert, but purely musical sorcerer. He had great influence on the people he worked with, not only the younger, but also the elder, like Toots Thielemans for instance, with whom he toured Europe for several years. Rob Franken liked to experiment with new instruments, and was the first person in Holland who made good use of the electric Fender Rhodes piano. Sadly, he died too young, at the age of 42.
