Wan Chai Records is a Hong-Kong based label, specialized in rare Asian records and quality reissues.
For their first release, they wanted to highlight a promotional record released at 500 copies only in Hong-Kong for a famous Soda brand. It was offered with a pack of bottles in 1977 and never been released.
Produced and arranged by Noel Quinlan, this Album is a mix of Funk and Soul covers. The result is an awesome LP including groovy covers, from the classic “Lowdown” by Bob Scaggs, to a Funky “I Shot The Sheriff” by Bob Marley with a deep Fender Rhodes, and 12 other outstanding tracks.

Flaunt Edwards aka J.Rocc teams up with Kon for the "Planets Of Life (Flip)". The tracks has been a staple in many DJ's sets from Benji B, Kaytranada, Flammable DJs from Russia and many more DJs worldwide. The track is from one of R&B's finest group with an extra Drum track to attract the dancers.

The First track on Side B is a classic Disco track from an artist who said "Let's Start The Dance" extended in all the right parts for the dancers. This one has been played by the likes of Kenny Dope & Madlib. The second track is a major boogie stomper that has been a big request since J.Rocc released it "Make You Groove" on his Bandcamp page.

Flaunt Edwards is an alias of J.Rocc, when he want to explore the Disco / House side of things. When you see the name Flaunt on a release you know it's to make the people dance.

Led by Saxophonist Rob Mitchell, Abstract Orchestra have been a consistent presence on the u.k. music scene, touring constantly in promotion of their debut LP "Dilla" and follow up 45 "New Day feat. Illa J", steadily building a loyal and supportive fanbase.Inspired by the legendary live performances of The Roots with Jay-Z and the 40 piece orchestral arrangements by Miguel-Atwood Ferguson of the work of J Dilla, classic arranging techniques underpin modern loop-based structures, breathing new life into familiar material.

The band itself is based on the classic jazz big band instrumentation of saxes, trumpets and trombones and features the cream of the north of England's jazz scene who collectively have played with Jamiroquai, Corinne Bailey Rae, Mark Ronson, Martha Reeves, John Legend & the Roots, Roots Manuva and Amy Winehouse.

"Madvillain Vol. 1" takes the template of their debut LP "Dilla" and applies the same approach to the collaboration of MF Doom and Madlib, aka MADVILLAIN and their albums MADVILLAINY and MADVILLAIN 2. Sampling the likes of Sun Ra, Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard, George Duke, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Quincy Jones and Stevie Wonder gave the albums a jazz oriented feel and ethos which in turn lend themselves perfectly to the deconstruction and re-imagining of Abstract Orchestra. As with their debut, all the tracks were recorded live in the studio with very few overdubs.

Abstract Orchestra's MADVILLAIN Volume 1 explores the jazz, TV soundtrack and film score aspect of the original work, combining it with classic big band writing and a focus on improvisation. There is a strong influence ofQuincy Jones, Lalo SchifrinandDavid Shire(Composer of the soundtrack toThe Taking of Pelham 123) on the album, and the arranger Rob Mitchell crafts his own sound that inhabits the space between Madlib's production and Quincy Jones' writing. Bandleader and arranger Rob Mitchell says of the record: "'MADVILLAINY' is a jazz album as much as it is a hip-hop album and I wanted to explore this reciprocal territory there has always been between jazz and hip-hop. 70's cop show soundtracks have always captured my interest and imagination, and I discovered so much amazing music through TV themes, Quincy Jones and Lalo Schifrin in particular. They explored sounds that were menacing, angular, dissonant, frantic and yet captivating. They were also able to write music that was the flip side of all that dark chaos, and write lush and beautiful music. Arranging and scoring up MADVILLAIN Volume 1. Has allowed me to explore these sounds that I've always loved, yet keeping a strong hip-hop identity as the core of its sound."

On December 12th 2013, as part of the celebrations for Manu Dibango’s 80th birthday, RFI invited Akalé Wubé to play live for the African master. For the ethio-jazz ambassadors, it was the perfect occasion to unearth two nearly unknown tracks – “Ekedi” and “African Pop Session” - both written and recorded by Manu in the early seventies. The moment was magical. During soundcheck, Manu fell for the charm of the Parisian quintet and quickly set up his saxophone. A few minutes later, Manu invited himself to play together with the band live during the show being aired internationally. This meeting could have ended there, but soon enough, it was Manu Dibango’s turn to invite Akalé Wubé on stage. He also contributed some studio work on Akalé Wubé’s album “Sost”, and joined the band on stage for a few concerts after that. The adventure continues! In order to inaugurate its catalog, Prado Records has chosen to release these two tracks on a vinyl 7inch. This newborn label, created by Benjamin Verdier (DJ) and David Georgelet (musician) is based in Paris and is associated with the musicians woking at Studio Prado, also Akalé Wubé’s HQ.

In The Groove
LP | 1977 | EU | Reissue (Oom Dooby Dochas)

Release:1977 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
First official reissue ever! Nigeria had an utterly strong popular music scene in the 1970s, “Afro Beat” and “Afro Funk” were the hottest musical creations of the day and garage rock oriented bands like OFEGE or funky monsters AKWASSA were at the forefront of the movement. I deliberately call it their second album despite three albums that were released under the monicker HEADS FUNK BAND with exactly the same line up as AKWASSA from 1975 to 1978. However, the main difference between “In the groove” and the earlier records is a more slick and polished feeling and a strong reggae element. Next to this, there are definitely a few more up to date disco funk influences that outweigh the classic raw streetfunk we could find on the predecessors of “In the groove”. So the development in sound and style is obvious. 'In the Groove' has a more easy, more relaxed feeling. The atmosphere is bright and certainly reaches out for a wider audience. AKWASSA were stars in their palce. “In the groove” was a perfect album that would appeal to each and every fan of funky music. All the members of AKWASSA stayed with music after the band dissolved in the late 70s, some of them until recent years, others straight up into the 80s or 90s. Even though this important Nigerian band called out it's quit somewhen, they left a rich legacy of music! Colorful and inspiring this album is made to last forever due to the memorable hooks and harmonies. While collectors spend 1.000 EUR for original copies, an official reissue of this monster rarity was overdue and Afro Funk lovers around the world will leap for joy as nearly all tunes could be played in a row to set the dancefloor ablaze!

Two years after an acclaimed first album, Al Sunny and Favorite Recordings proudly present Planets, carrying on their collaboration and bringing it to another level.
Al Sunny is a young and talented singer/musician/composer emerging from the French soul music scene. During his conservatory studies, he refined his knowledge and confirmed his desire to write and compose. He quickly matured the music that he truly loves, inspired by artists such as Tim Maia, America, Al Green, and Al Jarreau. Giving birth to the majority of his compositions through his guitar, he always seeks to bring his songs’ melody to the forefront. During his studies he kept experiencing live performing on different scenes and confirmed his choice for a musical career, while also meeting many brilliant musicians, including Florian Pellissier, who later introduced him to Pascal Rioux and Favorite Recordings.
It resulted in 2017 in Time to Decide release, a dazzling first album establishing Al Sunny’s music and writing style, looking towards the 70s and 80s Westcoast movement, infused with Blue-Eyed-Soul, Pop and Folk flavors. Built on the same influences, Planets is made of 8 new compositions (including a CD and digital bonus), and is clearly a continuation of its cadet, asserting Al Sunny’s talent and singing skills.
Fully recorded live and analogic in Paris, this new album also stands out by an impressive level of production, faithful to some classics of the genre. Mixing catchy melodies, soulful vocals, warm and heavy bass, strong beat and beautiful guitars and keyboards harmonies, Planets just perfectly meets the AOR and Modern-Soul golden era standards.

This release comes on 180g vinyl and was remastered from the original tapes. Be With have raided the KPM archives to re-issue another of our favourites from the KPM 1000 series. They say: A comprehensive collection of descriptive contemporary scores. We say: Just look at the track titles of The Road Forward and swoon: Strangelands, A Man Alone, Sheer Elegance, Mystique Voyage, Cruising. Don’t you just want to hear those? The maestro Alan Hawkshaw really spoils us on this, one of the most sought after KPM greensleeves. This collection from 1977 is a brilliantly varied blend of silky smooth synths, funk-fuelled clavichord grooves and soft focus space beats. Essential. As with all of our KPM re-issues, the audio for The Road Forward comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. We’ve taken the same care with the sleeves, handing the reproduction duties over to Richard Robinson, the current custodian of KPM’s brand identity. And don’t worry! Those KPM stickers aren’t stuck directly on the sleeves!

The Voice Of Soul
LP | 1976 | UK | Reissue (Be With)

Release:1976 / UK – Reissue
Genre:Organic Grooves
Veteran library musician Alan Parker recorded with session vocalist Madeline Bell for his Themes International Music label and the result was 1976’s The Voice of Soul.

The sensational uptempo dancer “That’s What Friends Are For” is probably the most well known track on the record, and is a big hit on the rare groove scene, but it is by no means an anomaly. The Voice of Soul is essentially a perfect, sophisticated soul album with heaps of swagger and sass from beginning to end. Its once generic-sounding title is now deservedly definitive.

And the whole LP oozes sex. It oozes sex so much that it could have soundtracked a period porn film. Indeed, parts of it did. “Love Is All” and “You’ve Got What It Takes” both featured on the infamously banned Pretty Peaches from the same year.

As is usual with library records, The Voice of Soul was hard to get even when it was first released. It’s next to impossible now. So here’s your opportunity to own what is in our opinion one of the finest rare soul LPs of the late 70s, and a superb example of Madeline Bell’s superlative vocal talents.

But that’s not the whole story. As well as pitching the record as “a varied selection of modern female vocal features which are equally suitable for background or radio programme usage”, the original release notes go on to explain that “the corresponding backing tracks are issued on TIM 1022 The Sound of Soul. Therefore it is possible to edit from vocal to instrumental version and vica versa where commentary or scene changes occur.”

So yes, all of the backing tracks from The Voice of Soul were released as The Sound of Soul, and we couldn’t re-issue one without re-issuing the other.

As with all ten re-issues, the audio for The Voice of Soul comes from the original analogue tapes and has been remastered for vinyl by Be With regular Simon Francis. We’ve taken the same care with the sleeves, handing the reproduction duties over to Richard Robinson, the current custodian of KPM’s brand identity.

LP | 2019 | US | Original (Incidental Music)
23,99 €*
Release:2019 / US – Original
Genre:Organic Grooves
First ever compilation of solo works from founding member of Ruins and Wind Project - including several unreleased and previously CD-only pieces
Features printed insert with comprehensive track-by-track notes and images. Alessandro Pizzin’s production work resonates far and wide throughout the prolific music scene of 1980s Venice, Italy. His work as one half of the influential experimental combo RUINS gave way to his later productions as a founding member of the acclaimed ambient electronic group Wind Project, whose whose complete works were recently reissued on CD. Though Pizzin’s sonic fingerprint is present throughout many landmark recordings of the minimalist and experimental Venetian music scene, his groundbreaking works as a solo producer were only quietly released on his own EXPLORA label in the early 1990s - until now.

Received: Selected Works 1981-1993, compiled by Incidental Music in collaboration with the artist, provides a valuable retrospective overview of Pizzin's solo material - from some of his earliest Fluxus-inspired work of the 1980s to the rich sonic palette of his early '90s CD material. The pieces featured on 'Received' touch upon the atmospheric and polychromatic sounds of Pizzin's electronic work, often developed in conjunction with various occasions of art shows, grandiose chapel productions, and even a natural birth method training video - such as the ethereal Hiroshi Yoshimura-esque 'Sunset on a hill' - a previously unreleased piece commissioned by a natural birth center in Venice. Other compositions, such as 'In loving memory' and the previously unreleased 'Francesco (live in studio)' exhibit the profound emotive range of Pizzin's compositions, at times evoking the eclectic environmental works of Brian Eno as well as Italian musical contemporaries Piero Milesi, Riccardo Sinigaglia, and Pepe Maina.

Compiled by Incidental Music in collaboration with the artist, Received: Selected Works 1981-1993 includes extensive track-by-track liner notes, giving a comprehensive and critical overview of Alessandro Pizzin’s solo career. Out on vinyl and digital formats December 13, 2019.

Release:2019 / US – Original

First collaboration between french trumpet player Antoine Berjeaut and Chicago-based drummer MVP Makaya McCraven, along with a cast including bassist Junius Paul and saxophonist Julien Lourau. A mix of writing and improvisation based on material previously composed by Antoine Berjeaut and Makaya McCraven, those sessions were then used in his studio by McCraven, who did what he does best: he re-mixed, sampled and re-composed a new and vivid score, blending contemporary jazz, electronic music and post-rock.

Bridging the spaces between the Paris and Chicago scenes, Moving Cities brings together the best of both worlds and is emblematic of a new, utterly modern jazz going through a true aesthetic revolution. Moving Cities started as a live laboratory set up by Berjeaut and McCraven; it echoes the recent evolution of international metropolises constantly torn between individualism and collective endeavors, in a disrupted geography.

The Apostles were a renowned Nigerian funk/soul group from the city of Aba (an epicenter for music during the 70s & 80s) and disciples of the heavy psychedelic soul/rock fusion style...for over forty years, they have stood as the jewel in the crown of the Afrobeat genre in Eastern Nigeria and champions of its flourish ing post-war music scene. Since their formation in 1973, the band has turned out memorable perf ormances in a variety of styles including rock, soul, funk, pop and reggae. The Apostles amassed a large following, enjoyed an immense success throughout Nigeria and went on to release multiple albums. Although most of their songs are sung in English, a few of their songs are also sung in Igbo. The Apostles became superstars on the strength of several hit singles and have been preaching a particular blend of funky psychedelic soul/rock fusion for over 40 years. The LP we are presenting you here
Black Is Beautiful (1977) is one of the most enjoyable albums of the Afrobeat era: proud, assured, relaxed and extremely powerful. Black Is Beautiful contains a heavy mix of wailing guitars, swirling funky organ sounds and James Brown-style vocals. It is one of their best albums (also one that became a fixture in many East Nigerian homes) and an essential Afro-Funk record to add to your collection. Today we are proud to present to you the first ever vinyl reissue of this rare Nigerian album originally released on EMI Nigeria in 1977. This reissue is now available as a deluxe 180g vinyl edition featuring the original artwork

Selam means 'peace' in Amharic, the language commonly spoken in Ethiopia. Peace on you, peace for this world that knows it so little and needs it so much. It is an aspiration for everything, but also, as in North Africa where its equivalent is ‘salam’, a greeting to the
interlocutor, an invitation to fraternity. With this third album, Arat Kilo addresses us its greeting as well as a wish for universal peace. It's not a sign of a new beginning after two already exhilarating recording adventures. On the contrary, it is that of a blossoming in the form of an opening.
An openness that is not accompanied by any renunciation or compromise. The group, which brings together six French musicians passionate about ethiojazz, has made sure not to get away from its favourite field, these sweaty funks and fivelegged jazz strangely twisted in the witchcraft of Swingin' Addis, a brief parenthesis today considered as a golden age where some Ethiopian producers and musicians took advantage of a loophole in the censorship system established by Haïlé Selassié to unite traditional turns - the only
ones authorized by the Negusse Negest regime - with Western jazz, soul and pop. In this album, Arat Kilo never leaves Addis Ababa in the early 70s where charming singers and electric orchestras developed, in an almost clandestine way, heady melodies and melodies full of mystery. The four characteristic ethiojazz scales are found there, which blend the ornamental chiselings and harmonic cement of each title, on a par with the associations of timbres and rhythms inherited from this composite aesthetic. But the band managed to bring to fruition the evolution that was taking shape in its previous album: on the one hand by accentuating the dancing character of its compositions - following an almost natural vocation, so much so that the prodigious drums of Florent Berteau, the bass of Samuel Hirsh, the percussion of Gérald Bonnegrace, the guitar of Fabien Girard, Aristide Gonçalves' trumpet and keyboards and Michael Havard's saxophones and flutes seemed predisposed to fit together to form a fabulous groover machine in every tone, every meter -, on the other hand, by incorporating with amazing ease two singers used to walking across very different horizons, Mamani Keita and Mike Ladd.

Genre:Organic Grooves
It is interesting how the Jazz sounds of the 1950s and early 1960s influenced later psychedelic bands and if you dig yourself through to the most influentual records of that mind expanding extraordinary wing of jazz music you will hit Art Blakey and this album directly with your nose. The title says it all and what you get to listen to here will surely take you away from the cold and grey reality and drag you onto a trip to the center of your galaxy. It starts with a haunting passage that shows roots in African and latin folk music, then explodes into a cacophony of poly rhythmical patterns. There are voices allover the place but it is not singing in the actual way. This voice howls in the more gentle parts and spits commands over the wild rhythm burst outs. Art Blakey smokes and despite his completely unleashed playing he makes his drums sound melodic if that makes sense to you. Sometimes he gets accompanied by a piano or flute but their lines will hardly show up and seem like doomed greetings from forlorn dimensions while the sheer power of the drumming becomes the true reality and tears up your mind to let it float out. And this is only the first piece called „Buhaina chant“. „Ya ya“ as second piece is a bit more melodic and has an irresistible groovy flow, still with this melodic drumming that builds the spine of this outstanding record. German 70s project NIAGARA has recorded similar drum based music 15 years ahead of this 1957 release. The few bass lines and piano sounds and the occasional flute are nothing but tinges of colour to make this an even more exciting affair. And it really sounds like a ritual as the album title implies, a ritual as quite often indicated by H.P. Lovecraft in his haunting novels and short stories about unspeakable cults. The album gets more song oriented with the beginning of the next piece „Toffi“. Traditional African chants on a bass, piano and drum background flow into a passage where the piano takes off for a longer solo that is rooted in blues, boogie and ragtime jazz, the flute gets a solo passage as well on a base of latin tinged drum and bass patterns and a repetitive piano chords. But again the piece gets stripped down to it's bare rhythmical spine and then Art Blakey comes to freak out on his drumkit. You can still hear the piano and bass doing the same line over and over again but your attention lies with the furious antics of Mr. Blakey while the percussive backing hypnotizes you. Again we have this cultish and ritualistic appeal. An orgy in rhythm. „Split skins“ as song title will prepare you for what comes over you. Another nine minutes of drumming power. It comes as a sheer endless drum solo and still keeps your attention going from the first to the last beat. Blakey is to the drums what Coltrane is to the tenor saxophone and what John McLaughlin is to guitar, a visionary, a traveler and searcher who pushes himself and his boundaries forward. Aged 38 by the time he recorded this album he reached his first peak. As a member of groups with Thelonius Monk and Miles Davis he certainly was a common name among jazz aficionadoes and this album showed that he actually was much more than just the drummer of some bigger leaders. A top classic and still as relevant as it was in 1957 when it got released.

While EPA is being negotiated mainly outside of the limelight of international attention, this album of musical oral histories is an approach to shed a critical light onto the complex circumstances and inhumane side effects of global trade.
The spoken words are the vocals of the tracks. The artists have left the rhythm and tonality of the voices untouched, and the statements have simply been collaged into subthemes. Subsequently, Kacirek and Muhuni have dubbed the voices with their instruments: mallets, piano, percussion, synthesizer, and many more. The result is nothing less than a mesmerizing stream of consciousness. It sometimes reminds of sound collages by The Books, of Steve Reich’s “Different Trains” or of Jan Jelinek’s repetitive soundscapes. “Economic Partnership Agreement” can be listened to as an audio play or musical documentary as a whole while individual tracks such as “The Weather Has Changed So Much” stand out as single hits. Sven Kacirek has played and collaborated with Shabaka Hutchings, John McEntire, Nils Frahm, Sofia Jernberg and Stefan Schneider among others. He has travelled to Kenya many times, always on the quest for musical inspiration and collaborations. The most famous result are his “Kenya Sessions” (Pingipung 2011) as well as “Mukunguni” and “Rang’ala” (Honest Jons 2013/14). Daniel Mburu Muhuni is a percussionist from Nairobi who took part in the BLNRB project conducted by the Teichmann Brothers in 2012.
With this new album, the two artists focus on an intercultural exchange which aims at more than beautiful music: Unveiling voices about global trade from a Kenyan perspective. Five music videos will be published ahead of the release date
in which the interviewed guests are featured. This album shall be available for free on Bandcamp. Additionally, a limited vinyl LP edition of 200 hand numbered copies will be released. It comes in a luxurious gatefold cover with a 30 page booklet with all lyrics and more information on the EPA process and the people involved in this record.

Most of the musicians who gathered to record this fantastic spiritual jazz record for the Strata-East label on May 24th, 1974 had crossed each other's paths in various musical pairings over the preceding few years. Husband and wife team Dee Dee Bridgewater (vocals) and Cecil Bridgewater (trumpet) had been working together on albums like Frank Foster's "Loud Minority", and Roy Ayers' "Coffy" and "Virgo Red". Ten weeks before the "Freedom Of Speech" session, the couple had been joined in Tokyo by Cecil's brother Ronald Bridgewater (tenor saxaphone) to record Dee Dee's debut album, the beautiful "Afro Blue". Also in the studio on May 24th, 1974 was Donald Smith, (piano, vocals), fresh from recording on his older brother Lonnie Liston Smith's "Cosmic Funk" - on which Ronald Bridgewater had also played percussion. Cecil McBee (bass) was also there - just two weeks before, he'd completed his own Strata East date "Mutima", and in February he'd played on Mtume's "Rebirth Cycle" - with both albums also featuring Dee Dee Bridgewater on vocals. He'd also played on Lonnie Liston Smith's "Astral Travelling".
So 1974 was a huge year for all five of these people. Donald Smith and Cecil McBee were six months away from recording on Lonnie Liston Smith's massive "Expansions", with McBee fitting in a few Pharoah Sanders albums in between.
AND THEN, THE MYSTERY ... So with all this fervent activity, the question has to be asked ...Who was Billy Earl Parker Jr (drums), the leader of this session?
Billy Parker remains unlisted as a musician on all major jazz sites. His only other recording appears to be as a percussionist on Charles Tolliver's "Impact" in 1975.

Bobby ’Blue’ Bland
Bobby ’Blue’ Bland (1930 – 2013) was one of the leading US-American Blues, R&B and Soul entertainers. He knew how to combine the intensity of Gospel music with the expression of the Blues. His voice sounded as he wanted to bear witness to one's resolve but he was able to let his voice sound soft, sometimes cool but always culitvated so he could also reach the fans of Frank Sinatra and Nat ’King’ Cole with tremendous success. He formed his remarkable style of singing out of many different influences, characteristic and remained solely reserved for Bobby ’Blue’ Bland.
Duke-Label & ABC Dunhill
Blands voice was always the center of attention. After his huge successes during the 1950s and 1960s for the Duke label, he moved to ABC Dunhill when Duke was sold. He could reach a wider white audience in the early 1970s with his two LPs, ’His California Album’ and ’Dreamer’, plus productions together with B.B. King. ’

Dreamer’ was the record company's trial to produce an album in California with the cool Soul appeal of the city of Los Angeles. As a timeless Soul and Blues classic the album 'Dreamer' contains the in recent years often sampled track Ain’t No Love in the Heart of the City, one of the musical back bones to one of the favorites by Jay Z. The whole album is a wonderful soundtrack for those lonely nights alone and blue in a sleazy joint trying to forget a lost love in a bottle of bourbon.
Dreamer
’Dreamer’ is the warm velvet cover against cold loneliness with so many great songs like I Wouldn’t Treat A Dog (The Way You Treated Me) and Whose Foolin’ Who?, the bluesy Cold Day In Hell, Lovin’ On Borrowed Time and When You Come To The End Of Your Road. I Ain’t Gonna Be The First To Cry has indeed the lyrical quality of The Thrill Is Gone. The production by Steve Barri and Michael Omartian sounds full and ponderous.

The accompanying musicians, guitarists Dean Parks and Larry Carlton, bassist Wilton Felder and drummer Ed Green, ranked as being part in the cream of L.A.'s studio musicians. When ’Dreamer’ was first issued in 1974 a controversial discussion started regarding the production and the arrangements containing a brass section and strings. But now, forty years later, the LP album counts as one of the great masterpieces of its genre and the songs became standards in the repertoires of many Soul and Blues performers. Newly remastered with its original gatefold cover jacket the first real reissue on vinyl after 43 years comes from Bear Family Records!
Grammy® as a lifetime achievement award in 1997
Bobby ’Blue’ Bland was inducted into the ’Blues Hall of Fame’ in 1981 and 11 years later the induction into the ’Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame’ followed. He received a Grammy® as a lifetime achievement award in 1997.

Brownout’s legendary status as a “Funk Powerhouse” (Stereogum) is a reputation well deserved. The band of musicians have an impressive resume performing with Prince (RIP), GZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, Bernie Worrell (RIP), and accolades from Ozzy Osbourne for their Brownout Presents: Brown Sabbath project. The latter helped grab the attention of Fat Beats Records, who worked with the band to release the critically acclaimed Public Enemy instrumentals project Fear of A Brown Planet in 2018. The Austin 9-piece is back with their first full length album of original music in over 8 years. The album, aptly titled, Berlin Sessions (out March 6, 2020 on Fat Beats) was produced by Steve Berlin of Los Lobos and is the first with lead singer Alex Marrero, whom they originally collaborated with on their wildly successful Brown Sabbath records. Berlin Sessions finds the group merging a multitude of styles, from rock to psych and of course the Latin Funk and Breakbeat on which they have built their sixteen-year career and reputation as Austin's premier party-starters. NPR recently featured the band on their heralded “Tiny Desk Concert” series, performing songs off the new album. NPR described the diversity of the band, stating, “One of the things you need to know about this band is that they can change traditions or genres almost on a dime. The core members dip into soul, Latin funk, a form of Peruvian cumbia called chicha, and funk covers of both Black Sabbath and Public Enemy. What each configuration has in common is the almost telepathic bond the band has developed after 15 years of working stages across the country. As you can see on the video, it's so infectious that Prince once used them for a while as a back-up band.”

The rarest of all exotic LPs, like Eden Ahbez but with extra added death. This bizarre, rarely heard masterpiece brings together jazz, ancient manuscripts and a convicted murderer. Issued originally in 1959 it originates from Pheonix, Arizona. The concept behind the recording was unusual - to brings together two unconnected worlds: the jazz genius of Buddy Collette with the academic oriental studies and translations of A.I Groeg. Little can be found of A.I. Groeg, But before the LP was recorded A.I Groeg had translated several Polynesian and Japanese manuscripts. These form the basis of the dark narrations and lyrics across the album. Sublime vocalist Marni Nixon (the voice of Maria in West Side Story) was brought in for two songs and fledgling actor Robert Sorrels (now a convicted murderer) supplied the strangely unsettling and almost otherworldly narration.

Feted as the “Gateway to the South” and situated just above the Mississippi Delta’s cotton-growing zone, Memphis has a long, rich history of blues music, its strategic location rendering it a longstanding centre for the mingling of rural and urban blues styles. The city was thus a very fitting home for the Memphis Blues Festival of 1969 that gave rise to this incredible double live album. Most of the tracks are provided by bluesmen based in Memphis and its environs, such as country blues giant Bukka White, crying blues legend Sleepy John Estes, barrelhouse pianist Memphis Piano Red, electric banjo specialist Nathan Beauregard, country blues great Mississippi Fred McDowell (here collaborating with harmonica player Johnny Woods), singer and fife player Napoleon Strickland with the Como Drum Band and Delta blues man Furry Lewis; credited under the unlikely pseudonyms of RL Watson and Josiah Jones are none other than experimental folk pioneer John Fahey and steel guitarist Bill Barth, the latter a co-founder of the Memphis Country Blues Society.

This is a gem of an album and one of my favorites by McRae. It was recorded live for Atlantic Records at Donte's Club in Los Angeles on November 6, 1971 and released the following year.
What I love is not only the choice of songs, but the sound quality and the performance itself. The set not only contains established standards by Ellington, Cole Porter and the other greats, but some new (at the time) material. Including Burt Bacharach's "They Long To Be Close To You" in the set was a wise decision in my opinion. It deserves to be a standard. Of course there is the obligatory Billie Holiday song that McRae would include in all of her performances. On this album it's "I Cried For You", which was one of Billie's first recordings in 1936.
The sound quality is superb. The engineer managed to capture not only the energy from the live performance, but the richness of the ensemble backing McRae. Indeed, the musicians backing her are perfect for the material: Jimmy Rowles on piano (who wrote the "Ballad" of Thelonious Monk), Joe Pass on guitar, Chuck Domanico on bass and Chuck Flores on drums.
If you love hearing some of the best songs from the Great American Songbook performed by a master this album will delight you. There is a cohesiveness to the album that earns kudos from the production team as well as the performers. Interestingly McRae and her ensemble performed 32 songs the night that this was recorded. One can only speculate as to why a volume 2 wasn't released. Regardless, this is - in my opinion - some of McRae's best live material.

Funky soul-jazz organist Caesar Frazier crafted superior Hammond funk. 75, his second LP, is a rare gem. It’s comfortably his greatest artistic statement. The follow-up to Hail Ceasar!, it’s a taut, grooving set that expands his sound and, put simply, it’s got better songs. The key elements of his debut album are all there – production from maestro Bob Porter, accompaniment from hip players (Bernard “Pretty” Purdie, Cornell Dupree, John Tropea) and arrangement from Horace Ott - but the overall sound is elevated. The tightly jamming, expressive jazz-funk makes for a richer, fuller, more satisfying experience. 75 is a mixture of hard-driving originals, deeply beautiful slower numbers to vary the tempo and a couple of classy covers.

The first studio date of the Charles Lloyd Quartet, with Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee, and Jack DeJohnette, was recorded and released just a few days before the band took both the European and American festival circuits by storm. First came Europe, which was just getting the disc as the band was tearing up its stages. While the live dates are now the stuff of legend, it's easy to overlook the recordings, but to do so would be a mistake. "Dream Weaver" is a fully realized project by a band -- a real band -- in which each member has a unique part of the whole to contribute. Jarrett's unusual piano style fits musically with Lloyd's lyricism in a way that it shouldn't. Jarrett was even then an iconoclast, playing harmonic figures from the inside out and relying on counterpoint to create new spaces, not fill them in. (Just listen to "Autumn Sequence", where his solos and his backing harmonics are equally strident and inventive as Lloyd's Eastern explorations of mood and mode.) And then there's the rhythm section of McBee and DeJohnette, whose modal inventions on the intervals make the "Dream Weaver" suite an exercise in open time, allowing all players to wander around inside it and take what they want out. The set closes with a group party jam on "Sombrero Sam", with Lloyd and Jarrett trading eights on a Cuban variation on a fantasia. There were no records like this one by new groups in 1966.

For the first time on vinyl, his album from 1999.

Charles Lloyd's sixth ECM album is both a departure and a homecoming for the Memphis-born and California-based tenorist, introducing new music and revisiting archive favourites (including the epic "Forest Flower"), and featuring an all-star line-up. With his "Scandinavian" band currently on hold, this is Lloyd's first all-American album in a long while - Dave Holland qualifies as an honorary American by now - with all the differences of cultural emphasis that this implies. ECM veteran John Abercrombie and legendary drummer Billy Higgins are in great form throughout as they lock in with Lloyd to tackle material ranging from Billy Strayhorn's "A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing" to the Elvis Costello / Burt Bacharach-penned "God Give Me Strength" or dig deep into the roots music of the "Island Blues Suite".

Four-and-a-half decades after the event, saxophonist Charles Lloyd's "Love-In", recorded live at San Francisco's Fillmore Auditorium in 1967, the counterculture's West Coast music hub, endures as much as an archaeological artifact as a musical document. From sleeve designer Stanislaw Zagorski's treatment of Rolling Stone photographer Jim Marshall's cover shot, through the album title and some of the track titles ("Tribal Dance", "Temple Bells"), and the inclusion of John Lennon and Paul McCartney's "Here There And Everywhere", "Love-In's" semiology reeks of the acid-drenched zeitgeist of the mid 1960s, a time when creative music flourished, and rock fans were prepared to embrace jazz, provided the musicians did not come on like their parents: juicers dressed in sharp suits exuding cynicism.
It is likely that more joints were rolled on "Love-In's" cover than that of any other jazz LP of the era, with the possible exception of saxophonists John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" (Impulse!, 1965) and Pharoah Sanders's "Tauhid" (Impulse!, 1967). Chet Helms, a key mover and shaker in the West Coast counterculture, spoke for many when he hailed the Lloyd quartet as »the first psychedelic jazz group«.
It is to Lloyd's credit that, at least in the early stages of his adoption by the counterculture, he resisted dumbing down his music. The adoption stemmed from Lloyd's espoused attitude to society, his media savvy, his sartorial style and his sheer nerve in playing jazz in the temples of rock culture. He took the quartet into the Fillmore West three years before trumpeter Miles Davis took his into the Fillmore East.
So "Love-In" comes with a load of baggage, some of it less than fragrant. But as 45 minutes of music, it still has legs. Lloyd's vocalized tenor (and flute on two tracks) has Coltrane-derived muscle; the young Jarrett's lyrical and funky solos, particularly on his 07:55 showcase, the gospel-ish "Sunday Morning", his two featured originals ("Sunday Morning" and the soul jazz-ish "Is It Really the Same?"), and his playing the strings of the piano directly with his hands, all remain compelling; McClure and DeJohnette are solid and inventive.

Charles Mingus is usually known for his wild, soulful and avant-garde compositions. "East Coasting" is mellow by comparison, but it still cooks on a musical level. The Mingus touches are there; the trombone, drummer Danny Richmond and of course the dark emotional undercurrent looms large, too. The personnel are all Mingus regulars, except for pianist Bill Evans, who would not be described as 'soulful' in the traditional sense, but his introverted and sensitive style works well with Mingus's music. His playing on "West Coast Ghost" (the album's stand-out track) and "Celia" are two examples of Evans' ability to understand an artist's musical vision and play accordingly in his own beautifully original style.?"East Coasting" sounds like the prototypical 1950s jazz recording. It's something one would hear in an attic converted to a bedroom where an artist or lonely soul might live. It's what a lot of people might believe Jazz would or should sound like. Highly recommended to Jazz lovers and perhaps more importantly to young people who have just been blown away by Kerouac's novel "On The Road" and have become interested in exploring Jazz. "East Coasting" will allow them to get a taste of lost creative America.

You can be sure that jazz fans in the year 1960 were unfamiliar with Charles Mingus’s LPs "Blues And Roots" or "Mingus Ah-Um" when they poured into the Pinède Gould Arena at the Antibes Jazz Festival held in Juan-les-Pins, France on 13 July. At any rate, as can be seen in a short video clip, all the seats were occupied. In addition, a really good trumpeter was there, whose name would later resound throughout Europe: Ted Curson. What is more, the legendary Bud Powell, who lived in France, was invited as a special guest for one number that required a pianist.
The Jazz Workshop – which was how Mingus called his working ensemble – presented repertoire that was familiar to all the musicians: "Better Git It In Your Soul", "Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting" and Dolphy’s wonderful solo on the bass clarinet in "What Love?". Besides this there was "Cry For Freedom" as "Prayer For Passive Resistance" was also named, and "Folk Forms", also known as "Ummh". As a mark of respect towards the guest musician, it was decided to perform the evergreen "I’ll Remember April", with Powell’s improvisation being applauded enthusiastically by the audience.
Charles Mingus was to play in numerous concerts in the 60s and 70s; he recorded more than two-dozen official LPs, accused several concert organizers and tour managers of extortionate robbery, and trampled on illegal recording tapes. But the present live recording was made by the ORTF and released officially later by Atlantic Records. It is now re-released after many years and is a rare document in the annals of music history.

This Speakers Corner LP was remastered using pure analogue components only, from the master tapes through to the cutting head. More information under www.pure-analogue.com.

* Re-mastering by: Ray Staff at Air Mastering, Lyndhurst Hall, London / Fifth part of the Strata-East Dolphy Series, Glass Bead Games is arguably the crown jewel of the Strata East movement, an amorphous genre that treads an unusual path between post-bop, 70’s avant-garde and spiritual jazz, with a groove.

Glass Bead Games is full of revelations at many levels. First, the decade of the 1970s did produce genuinely creative, "human" new music flowing from the jazz mainstream; second, Bill Lee was more than Spike's dad: he was a superlative bassist, a team player of the first order, a powerful catalyst who, if anything, deserves to be better known than his son; third, Billy Higgins was, as so many musicians insist, a once-in-a-lifetime drummer—the bellows inspiriting the collective flame.

Most importantly, Clifford Jordan was an artist of the first order, his playing so effortless and unforced, unselfconscious and focused, mature and wise that, at a time when altissimo fury was all the rage, it's small wonder his authentic voice frequently went unheard. His musical rhetoric is so personally expressive, its substance so compelling, the listener couldn't care less about the extraordinary technique required to convey its captivating message. Compared to some of his more acclaimed peers he's a less aggressive yet paradoxically more directive and shaping influence. The climaxes, rather than spelled out, are merely suggested, registering with deep and lasting impact on the listener. It all comes down to learning the language, those precious little beads. Not every player, including Jordan or the listener, can use it like Shakespeare, but all can learn to read Shakespeare and understand its principles of arbitrariness and serendipity, of invariance and transformation.

Jordan, no less than Shakespeare, requires a like-minded cast of players—in this case four musicians of such redoubtable proficiency that each remains committed to keeping the beads in play. He's not a man content with a mere musical "dialogue" with his fellow musicians nor is he about to take the initiative in pulling his troops up to his level. Instead he begins to tell a musical story that's so compelling his three comrades are inspired equally to contribute to a collaborative narrative. This is brilliant music-making by a Coltrane- influenced successor who feels no obligation to mime the predecessor. It may be the most significant saxophone performance on record since Coltrane and, providing the listener stays with it for any length of time, the most deeply satisfying. Jordan's game—so effortless, unforced, and "level"—erases distinctions between composed and improvised, soloist and ensemble, narrator and narrative, the dancer and the dance. It seems incapable of wearing out its welcome.

Only one copy per customer!

Cree Records is set to re-release jazz pianists Clive Zanda’s classic calypso jazz 'Clive Zanda Is Here! With "dat kinda ting"- Calypsojazz Innovations', originally released in 1975. Only 350 copies of the record were pressed in 1975 which makes it one of the most sought-after records from the Caribbean from that period today. With new distribution and manufacture being handled by German reissue speciality label Cree Records, this album — remastered and released as a vinyl LP — has the possibility of reaching a new global audience.
Clive Zanda, an elder statesman in the local jazz fraternity in the Caribbean, began his improvisations and fusion exercises with jazz and calypso back in the early 1960s when he was a student of architecture in England. On his return to Trinidad in 1971, he collaborated with Barbados-born QRC (Queen’s Royal College in Port of Spain) teacher and indigenous jazz music advocate, Scofield Pilgrim to codify the new music that was beginning to shape a new generation of young jazz musicians.
Their "proof of concept" was this album recorded at KH Studios with Michael 'Toby' Tobas (drums) and Michael Georges (bass) as a trio. With a new liner note essay by local music writer Nigel A. Campbell, the project overseen during the last year by Cree Records continues the renaissance of Trinidad and Tobago music of the dynamic 1970s.
This limited reissue of the rare and much sought-after Caribbean record is pressed on 180gram virgin vinyl. The release comes with a reproduction of the original artwork including an inlay leaflet with extensive liner notes by Nigel A. Campbell, song-by-song notes and biographies of the accompanying musicians.

This brilliant 1972 album from UK 70s funk outfit Cymande (pronounced Sah-mahn-day) has been heralded as the best Brit Funk album of all time.

Taking influences from their Guyanese and Jamaican roots they fused reggae influenced basslines, Afro-tinted Nyabinghi percussion, psychedelic touches and American style funk instrumentation creating a unique sound which the band referred to as nyah-rock.

Their tracks later became a mainstay of block parties and hip hop break samples.

This, their debut, boasted perhaps their best-known funk anthem The Message and the much-sampled Bra, adopted by pioneering DJs like DJ Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash before being plundered by De La Soul, The Wu-Tang Clan, The Coup and The Fugees to name but a few.

They stand today as one of the most sampled black British bands ever cropping up on Hip Hop, House and Dance 12”s all over the World.

Morrison of the Ohio Players, who opens and closes the album with
dire warnings of what could happen in a world without funk. Rest
assured, D_m is here to make sure that never comes to pass. As he
puts it, "funk is the underdog, the black sheep of black music," and if
that's true, D_m-Funk is its shepherd.

This 1979 release was the fourth solo effort from Venezuelan composer and musician Daniel Grau. The music can be described as discofunk with a Latin melody and rhythm approach. This definitely was the hottest sound among the dancing folks back in the day and the rather futuristic synthesizer arrangements still turn these memorable tunes into a spacey and spicy affair.

The rediscovery of the music of David Axelrod in the 1990s was a revelation to the scores of hip-hop and breakbeat DJs that sampled him, but his composition genius was on display as early as the 1960s. After producing and arranging major critical and commercial hits for Lou Rawls, The Electric Prunes, David McCallum, and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, he was encouraged by Capitol Records to record and produce solo material. Coming right on the heels of The Beatles' revolutionary 1967 album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band, Axelrod would produce a slew of instrumental baroque pop records, which were intricately orchestrated, fused elements of jazz, psychedelic rock, chamber music, and neo-classical, and tackled issues of mental enlightenment, environmental impact, and would be hailed by critics as highly ambitious pieces of conceptual art. The albums Song Of Innocence (1968), Songs Of Experience (1969), and Earth Rot (1970) are most often hailed as David Axelrod's finest moments, but little is mentioned of the producer's 1970s material. Among these records is Seriously Deep, his lone album recorded for Polydor, and an unheralded gem of jazz-rock fusion. On Seriously Deep, Axelrod dispenses with the heavily orchestrated measures of previous works to conduct a powerhouse crew of session musicians, including Leon Ndugu Chancler of Santana on drums, Mailto Correa on percussion, Jim Hughart on bass, Joe Sample on electric keys, and many others, with production from frequent Axelrod collaborators Cannonball Adderley and Jimmy Bowen. Seriously Deep is an obscure release, but also one of David Axlerod's tightest, and most exploratory ones. Across six tracks, Axelrod and his collective of players dip in and out of bounding jazz-funk, Afro-Latin grooves, cinematic flourishes, psychedelic synth washes, and blaring big band horns. It's a singularly insular curiosity of musical impressionism that's equal parts brooding and joyous, a definitive part of Axelrod's discography, and a well of sample material for tracks by Mobb Deep, Large Professor, The Black Eyed Peas, and Beanie Siegel, among others.

One of the most unique albums on the Strata East label – and that's saying a heck of a lot, given the creative energies flowing through that legendary jazz outlet! "Descendents Of Mike & Phoebe" is a righteous little project put together by Spike Lee's father, Bill Lee, and his brothers and sisters (Cliff Lee, Grace Lee Mims, and Consuela Lee Moorhead) – working here in a group named after their slave ancestors, who are paid tribute in a beautifully flowing batch of tunes! Lee's round, warm bass tones are firmly at the head of the group on most numbers – recorded at a similar level to his excellent work with Clifford Jordan on Strata East during the same time – and other instrumentation includes piano from Consuela, flugelhorn from Cliff, and percussion from Sonny Brown and Billy Higgins – all used in a wonderfully evocative style that's even better than some of Lee's later soundtrack work. A few numbers feature vocals from Grace – singing wordlessly and with a really heavenly sort of quality – and together, the whole group have an undeniable sense of power and majesty, yet also one that's touched by a really personal sense of poetry too. Titles include a great version of Lee's "Coltrane", which was more famously recorded with Clifford Jordan.
