Release:2015 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
The fourth release from Palms & Charms sees the return of label co-owner Barnaby Bruce; ruminating on the perils of fine fabric care. We've all been there, a lengthy session on the dancefloor playing havoc with the pile of your velvet coat. Faced with this dilemma, Barnaby reaches for the battered volume, passed down through untold generations of his family, detailing archaic yet uncannily effective methods for extending the life of even the most exquisite textiles. As he does so, the percussive jazz-tinged boogie of Sweat on Velvet takes over his mind, unleashing a wave of dancefloor euphoria. Not to be outdone, Pete Herbert (Reverso 68), unveils his own masterful fabric care techniques, providing a remix that will starch your collar and shake out the creases. Not the same clothes, but something brand new. Freshly attired, Barnaby begins to notice curious and somewhat unsettling noises coming from the next room. He gingerly opens the door, and is confronted with a seance in full swing. Strangers sitting around his dining table wait with baited breath for word from the other side. But the unearthly howling of tortured spirits is quickly silenced by the devilish groove of Seance Fiction. As the ARP makes its entrance, every soul is up and dancing. Finally, Barnaby Bruce also provides the eminently useful Go Go Percussion Dub of Sweat on Velvet – rounding out a sartorially elegant EP with something for everyone, from sceptics to lost souls.

The sixth release from Hong Kong / Tokyo label Palms & Charms sees the return of Barnaby Bruce, and starts with a tale of daring escape. Hearing the approach of a loping synth, the protagonist checks the window: mysterious people are gathering outside his house! As a somewhat Gallic groove emerges, he and his girlfriend are in his car and heading south, driven on by the swing of the percussion. Will he find his deliverance On The Continent?Next up, Ruf Dug steps in with a spacious electronic reggae-esque remix, leading up to a killer piano line which pushes the groove straight onto the Autoroute. Ces't magnifique. On the B-side, our erstwhile fugitive and partner awake by the side of a country road in southern France. A baguette, a bottle of wine and the sound of chattering insects. Oh, For The Cicadas! As they head ever further south, they begin to reflect on what Other Worlds await them at journey's end. On the car radio a band plays a curious but driving blend of disco and percussion, with a distinctly house-influenced melody. Cette musique les deplace. Was it all just a crazy dream? Grab your suitcase, head to the coast and pick up a copy of this limited edition record to find out...

The third release on Palms & Charms comes from Tokyo club stalwart Masanori Ikeda (Mansfield, Ikeda X), who has had previous releases on the legendary Flower Records and Cos/Mes imprint Snaker. A resident DJ at London club Wag in the early 90's, Masanori returned to Japan later in the decade and has since provided the soundtrack to many a Tokyo night-time adventure, most recently with his continuing residency at Shibuya institution Oath. With Afro Tipsy, Masanori offers up a monster of rolling percussion and pulsating synths. Feel the stress of the day fall away, your veins flowing as if with the very energy of a thousand suns. Moving confidently to the dance floor, your head and limbs begin to move in new and unexpected rhythms. Don't be alarmed - you feel good. On the flipside, the remix from Almunia (Claremont 56) takes you deeper than deep. The sound envelops you as you enter the club. The continental winds and low pressure lift you aloft and you circulate around the dance floor, carried far as if on a warm jet stream. The rhythm drives, dubbed-out guitar echoing through the night. Leonardo Ceccanti and Gianluca Salvadori taking you to new places.

The second release on Tokyo and Hong Kong based label Palms & Charms takes you back to a moment in your life when perhaps things weren't going right. It was late, you'd had a couple of large rum and sodas and were nursing a cold beer against the sub-tropical humidity. You took to the streets, and as you paced through the 2am gloom a fine rain began to fall, illuminated by the light of the waxing gibbous moon till it shone like 'Slow Hot Confetti'. You slowly smiled and realised everything was going to be alright. Side A closes with a remix from Max Essa (Jansen Jardin, Is It Balearic?), giving an assertive step to your stride as you walk on to brighter days. On side B, 'The Planet I Left Behind' is a space-disco odyssey, telling a tale of the interplanetary longing of pan-cosmic travel. Missing home, you steer your rocket-ship through the infinity of space, heading firmly in the direction of the dance-floor, where other-worldly beings wave multiple limbs. The journey continues as Coyote (Is It Balearic? Recordings), offer a pulsating remix of galactic proportions. Enjoy your voyage to the stars.

The first release on new Tokyo and Hong Kong-based label Palms & Charms delivers a Balearic reflection on the paths of our lives through space and time. The title track sets a tropical scene, with a Riviera feel. Consider questions such as"'why are we here?" and "what are the reasons for human behaviour?" whilst drinking your favourite cocktail, preferably with a carefully selected combination of just a few ingredients. On side B "Feel the Wheel" is an instrumental rumination on the experience of work. The staccato sounds of Afro-Cuban bata punctuate a slice of understated synth-funk with an essence of boogie, as you contemplate the position of mankind on Earth, the only creatures on the planet capable of real self-determination and active endeavour. Max Essa (Jansen Jardin, Is It Balearic?) offers up two complimentary mixes of "This Time Around".
