One of the hidden treasures from Venezuela, Grupo Geyser were pioneers in fusing psychedelic rock with Latin & Afro Cuban rhythms.
Here's their first ever vinyl retrospective, including their four singles originally released between 1970-73.
Los Geyser aka Grupo Geyser formed in Caracas, Venezuela, in the mid-60s by brothers Publio and Ebenezer García. Initially influenced by the British and American bands of the time, the band experienced different line-ups and they gradually incorporated Latin / Afro-Cuban influences to their music, along with instruments like bongos, tumbadoras or sax, thanks to musicians like Roberto Monasterios.
Led by Publio García, who was the main songwriter, Grupo Geyser always played their own songs, refusing to do covers. They got to release a few self-produced 45s during 1970-1973 and they were pioneers in not only fusing psychedelic rock with Latin and Afro-Cuban rhythms but also in home-recording and multi-tracking with their song “La Súper Lombriz Atómica”, recorded by brothers Publio and Ebenezer at their home studio playing all the instruments themselves. The band even caught the attention of famous singer Alfredo Sadel, who took them under his wing and received interest from the US market.
This comp includes all their 45 sides: from heavy Latin-psych-fuzz-groove (“Óyeme Guajira”, “Piénsalo Bien”) to freakbeatish psych with Farfisa (“Tú Me Caes Mal”), bluesy acid psych (“Sodoma y Gomorra”) and more.
*Color insert with detailed liner notes by band member Publio Garcia and photos

Picture Disc Edition. Sophisticated & passionate, with flamboyant taste in sunglasses, Cem Karaca led Istanbul's music fans through a period of violent political turmoil. Karaca reworked traditional folk lyrics with molten electric bass lines that played up both a poet's broiling righteousness and also his listeners' common ground with their elders in Turkey's history.
1975's 'Nem Kaldi' gathers more 60s-70s singles that lead the listener through Karaca's own musical history, skipping across various collaborations. Sink deeper into the intrigue both musical & otherwise as fractious personnel changes & real-life assassins multiply, yet the double-time drums & badass synthesizer schwings pound on.

Master of the fuzz saz, Turkey’s answer to E. Clapton brings burly axe attacks to the snakey folk melodies of Anatolia. Long proven to cause just the brain-rot you’re looking for, here’s a Koray collection of tracks taken from singles and LPs for your acid-drenched pleasure. The guitar slinger who was once stabbed for wearing his hair too long around the streets of Istanbul interweaves melodies as old as the ruins of Ephesus with the riffs of Black Sabbath & his own souped-up baglama. Find out why they call him Erkin Baba. Double CD set, with insert / booklet including extensive linernotes.

More demented, brain-damaging Turkish electro-saz & synth drums galore by the mighty Derdiyoklar duo, originally released in 1984! Anadolu Pop doesn’t get weirder than this! These two Turkish guys armed with electro-saz, guitar, drums and synthetizers were hitting the Turkish market in Germany where they lived, playing their sets of traditional flavoured electro-folk in weddings and circumcision feasts for Turkish emigrants in Germany. That crazy is the story, that crazy is their sound!!!

Turkish band Bunalim (Turkish for "Depression") is a true legend: they were the absolute wildest and crudest band from the Anatolian Rock scene. Under the wing of Cem Karaça, who was their manager and producer, they released a few singles which are all collected here.
"Even more brain-blasted than Erkin Koray's deliberately underground band that lived in a house together (Yeralti Dörtlüsü), these dirty nude guys were in all ways hairy, and they stacked their Selmer amplifiers just as high as any rock band you could name. Drink up the John Bonham drum fills, evil Sabbath guitar, and sickly brooding organ." (Angela Sawyer, Weirdo Records, USA)

Raw & wild soul-funk-r&b-garage from 1970, recorded and released only in Algeria! Imagine JAMES BROWN fronting THE SONICS!!
Born in Puerto Rico, Bob Destiny grew up in Harlem (USA) and has a fascinating story: from starting playing piano as a child (self-taught) and tap dancing with the Five Chocolate Drops when he was 6 years old, to meeting Billie Holliday and playing with her; from appearing in a film with Shirley Temple to musicals in Broadway, dancing at Mankiewicz’s movie “Cleopatra”, singing at the San Remo Festival…
In 1969, Bob went to Algeria to teach music at the Algerian National Theater. He also continued with his singing career while living there. In 1970, he released a couple of 45s featuring “Wang Dang” and “Mahna (Troubles)” on the Freedom Musique label. He was also involved with the creation of the first Pan African Festival with Mahboud Bati and Frank Pourcel.
These 45s are very rare and were first discovered by the great Habibi Funk label a few years ago, who included “Wang Dang” on one of their compilations.
For our Pharaway Sounds 45, we’ve selected one track from his first 45 and another from his second one.
After playing in Morocco with Hahmed Maraki and forming bands like The Fingers, Bob arrived to Spain in the 80s. He created a jazz school in Zaragoza and was involved with the famous “Jazz en la Margen” festival. In the 90s, Bob move to France, focusing in composition, gospel, musicals and soundtracks. Sadly, he passed away on March 31, 2016.

Ultimate space-age exotica trip from Venezuela.
In the early 70s, well-known composer and arranger Chelique Sarabia (who penned the famous “Ansiedad” when he was just a kid) decided to register an album of traditional & folkloric songs from Venezuela but giving them a modern touch, using especially developed equipment (M.R.A.A.), based off of the principles of the Moog.
Chelique, helped by a team of gifted musicians, employed traditional instruments like the cuatro and the bandola llanera, filtering them through oscillators, playing with feedback, tape delay, synthesized frequencies, echoing sounds… The result was “Revolución Electrónica en Música Venezolana”, an album with a truly exotic, psychedelic, and ahead of its time sound.
Originally, the album was sponsored by the Shell Company in Venezuela, given away to customers, employees and friends of the company as a Christmas gift in 1973. It was titled “4 Fases del Cuatro - Música Venezolana desarrollada Electrónicamente por Chelique Sarabia” (“4 Phases of Four – Venezuelan Music Electronically Developed by Chelique Sarabia”). Once the exclusivity period with the petrol company was over, Chelique did a commercial release, this time under the name of “Revolución Electrónica en Música Venezolana” (“Electronic Revolution in Venezuelan Music”). Thanks to this, Chelique and his team were considered electronic music pioneers in Latin America.
“In the past five decades, there have been many attempts at modernizing the vast folkloric tradition of Venezuela, but nobody has reached the level of depth that CHELIQUE SARABIA did when he put his impeccable reputation as a composer and arranger at risk with this out-of-the-blue revolutionary musical manifesto in 1971. 47 years later, an album that remains ahead of its time.” - Alex Figueira (Fumaça Preta)

Second proper studio album – originally released in 1976 – by the king of Turkish psych/Anatolian rock.
Recorded in Belgium with help from session musicians related to Placebo, Janko Nilovic and Mad Unity among others, Nick The Chopper features lyrics in English, huge orchestral sections, and re-arrangements of many of the melodies from his masterpiece 2023.
Barış spent his whole life trying to communicate to the wider world outside Turkey. This was his last attempt at doing so with an album before turning to a travel television show to visit faraway places and talk to the young and old, one on one. Every production trick of the glorious 1970s was deployed to push Barış up the European charts, and now they can push him right into your brain instead.

Famous for their matching, colourful suits and always-happy smiles, Beyaz Kelebekler (White Butterflies) were a mixed-gender Turkish band very popular during the ‘70s. They released one album plus numerous 45s in Turkey and other countries like Holland and Italy. In 1976 during the last day of their European Tour, just after one gig in Cologne, Beyaz Kelebekler visited a studio of a friend which was still in construction. They decided to record a few songs, just for fun and for testing the new studio equipment. It was a very basic, one take recording, using an 8-channel mixer, a few mics and a reel-to reel tape machine.
The result was an amazing example of Anatolian psych-funk, featuring wah-fuzz guitar, flute, heavy drums, joyous male / female vocals…
Unreleased until now, we present the first ever release of these surprising recordings, rescued from the only surviving cassette tape.

The Disco Music, Philadelphia Sound and Salsoul fever were also present in the Rumba-Pop and Flamenco-Funk scene of Spain in the late ‘70s / early ‘80s. Producers, sound engineers and studio musicians collaborated closely with flamenco / rumba singers and bands. Among others, we got to highlight the production / studio work that genius Josep Llobell did for the Belter label in Barcelona.
Here you got 12 disco-rumba-flamenco-boogie bombs, a time machine to the boites and discotheques of the late 70s and the perfect soundtrack to an imaginary “Kinki” cinema soundtrack.

“Dolores Vargas was our wildest performer, our Spanish Tina Turner, Ikettes-era. In my opinion, she was a better dancer and singer than Lola Flores but she never received the same media attention than the famous Lola. Maybe it’s better this way. Dolores Vargas is wine for sommeliers and since now, music for connoisseurs.”– Txarly Brown
Here’s an anthology dedicated to the ‘70s period of Dolores Vargas, known as “The Earthquake” due to her wild and frenzied dancing style. In these songs, released 1970-1975 for the Belter label from Barcelona, you’ll hear a killer sound and production mixing Funk, Rock and Pop with the powerful vocal style of “The Earthquake”.
Including real gipsy-funk bombs like “A la pelota” “Anana Hip” or “La Hawaiana” along with her bizarre cover version of “Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep” and much more.

The apparition of Spanish female duo Las Grecas with their Gipsy-Rock sound in the 70s created quite a boom in the Spanish market at the time and paved the way for other similar gipsy-rock duos.
Morena y Clara were one of them. Launched by bizarre flamenco producer Lauren Postigo, they released a string of 45s and three LPs (highly sought after now) for the Discophon label. They mixed Rumba, Flamenco, Psychedelic Rock, Funk and Disco Music featuring an amazing production (heavy drums, fuzz-wah-phaser electric guitars, Moog, Hammond) over the wild flamenco female vocals of the duo.

His very last name, Dinleten, means 'listen'. So back to Anatolia once more and hear the unhinged guitar and electric baglama behind Turkish psychedelia's charismatic singer Ersen. He was discovered by Cem, was connected to Mogollar and 3 Hür-El, and even switched backing bands with Cem before finally hitting the charts with his own group Dadaslar. There's loads of B-sides and burly moves on these 70s singles which make his second LP, released in 1978. Wicked funk drums, fuzzy guitars, organs and the poweful voice of Ersen. Includes "Zalim", the killer psych-funk track made famous by the Gaslamp Killer's edit.

Years before Baris and even before the fame of Erkin Koray, Erol's flamboyant outfits and spontaneous behaviour brought a youthful, pop-oriented world to Turkish audiences.
Here's his first proper album from 1976.
While not exactly psychedelic, Erol's album shows how far the mix of Anatolian melodies and Western production could reach and you can find here some great examples of Turkish pop spiced with psych, disco and funk.
Includes insert with photos and liner notes by Angela Sawyer.

Los Dandy’s were a Peruvian cumbia band formed in the 70s by the great Héctor Farfán (Los Beta 5, Los Destellos) featuring the superb vocals of the legendary Oswaldo “Guajiro” Ortega (Los Guajiros, Los Destellos) on most of their songs.
This is their rare album from 1985, originally released on the tiny Bambú label.
A great mix of cumbias, guarachas and tropical rhythms with cool Atari-styled electronic effects, reverb drenched electric guitars, infectious vocals and incredible lyrics.
New cover design, remastered sound, insert with photos and liner notes.

Turkish ancient melodies get an '80s electro-funk treatment on this obscure album, originally released on the Diskotür label in 1985. Probably the work of an "ad-hoc" studio band (nothing is known about the musicians), this is a delirious mix of exotic melodies and lots of analogue synths, cheap Atari-styled electronic effects, distorted guitar and '80s beatboxes. File under: Anatolian funk, '80s boogie/electro, cosmic disco, Balearic and oriental grooves. First ever reissue!

The third album by Turkish psychedelic singer Edip Akbayram, originally released in 1982. This later album really ramps up the silly synthesizers. You'll hear whooshy '80s Rolands, vocals run through a harmonizer and tons of totally tubular bass popping, and it all makes it darned easy to hear just where the western intros and breaks stop. Ever wish Knight Rider's Kitt could drive to Istanbul? Take a ride on cheesy synthesizers with Edip at the wheel! This reissue comes with remastered sound and an insert.

The first ever vinyl reissue of this 1982 Arabian prog/psych masterpiece by cult band Osiris, hailing from Bahrein. A killer blend of '70s sounding hard progressive/psychedelic sounds with long ripping Mini-Moog and analogue synth attacks and hard lead guitar, but also mellow vibes, Arabian folky touches, exotic percussion and a floating -at times funky- rhythm section. The vocals are in English. The core of this six-piece existed of brothers Mohamed and Nabil Alsadeqi, who had already been making western orientated music since 1969. The LP coms with sound from the master tapes and includes an insert with photos and liners.

First ever reissue of this private Dutch album from 1979: a latin-funk-psych-prog trip featuring groovy jazzy flute, superb acoustic/electric guitars, funky rhythm section, exotic percussion and some cool Oriental/Thai/Brazilian vibes. Angelo Noce Santoro is a guitar player with over forty-five years of musical career. A founding member of legendary psych-prog band Cosmic Dealer, Angelo has recorded and released albums under his own name and hes also behind projects like Palmeira (the first Dutch band playing Brazilian music), Santoro Brothers and Oriental Guitars among many others. His unique guitar playing, which incorporates surf, psychedelic, jazz and Oriental influences, has received praising from connoisseurs of obscure instrumental sounds such as Jello Biafra, who got in touch with Angelo after discovering one of his solo albums in a second-hand shop in the 80s. 'For You' was Angelo's first solo effort, released as a private pressing in 1979 on ANS, his own label. Angelo played bass, acoustic and electric guitars, flute and percussion. He was joined by ace flute player Steven Bishop, drummer Herman Muller and Lodewijk Hulsman on acoustic guitar. Most of the tracks were written by Angelo prior to 1979, with some of them dating back to the early 70s when he was with Cosmic Dealer.

As Turkey's political factions turned more and more violent in the late 1970s, Buscemi- eyed Edip Akbayram was nearly beaten up by rioting audiences for daring to sing about rural points of view that were naturally critical of Istanbul's political leaders. This second album of Anatolian psychedelia, originally released in 1977, showed defiance even in its gatefold art, with a drawing of the band members seeming to grow straight out the ground, covered in plant tendrils. Akbayram poached members of Mo?ollar and Bari? Manço's Kurtalan Ekspres to get the best fuzz breaks and hammond slams & put 'em straight in your ears. The band also tried out some mixes that pushed the vocals or a particular instrument way up front, and of course long, low, reverberant welcomes from Edip's echo- covered voice. Remastered sound, insert / booklet with photos and liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records). Vinyl comes with exact reproduction of the original gatefold pop- up sleeve.

Edip Akbayram’s a frail guy who spent his childhood unable to walk, but once he grew up he was on Istanbul TV in a whitey-fro and knee length colored robes. Akbayram’s voice is big & open, and it took him all across Turkey at the height of Anatolian psychedelia. This 1st album collects precious singles from 1972-74, with dark melodies that descend in loose spirals, seemingly forever. Tunes taken from mystic Sufi poets who played the ba?lama, but retrofitted with hard plowing electric bass lines, funky drums, fuzz-wah guitars and keyboards. Remastered sound, insert / booklet with photos and liner notes by Angela Sawyer (Weirdo Records).

You know how record nerds are. They’ll gladly tell you that a dawdling Moldovian choir of 70 year old grandmothers is the next brick in your psychfunksplosion journey. But Shahram Shabpareh is the real thing. Colorful arrangements of blurting horns, evil bass grooves, cheesy organs & thick strata of overlapping percussion instruments going off like microwave popcorn.
As the leader of an Iranian 60s garage band, the Rebels, and later a 70s solo singer, Shabpareh was never happy just tossing a few moves from Abba in front of whatever was on the local charts already. He wrote & recorded hard rock & funky piano riffs that were built bulldozer tough & would’ve stuck out in an American trailer park or a London pub just as easily as they did in Tehran. Not that he wasn’t afraid to put someone else’s idea to good use, as he certainly makes superb use of the Kinks’ chords from ‘You Really Got Me’. It’s more that Shahram’s rock cojones have caused him to make blistering music again & again over the years, with little regard for where it comes from.
Here’s a well-deserved compilation of his best tracks, with insert/booklet with liner notes, and 180gr vinyl.
