2LP | 2020 | EU | Original (Musica Per Immagini / Sonor Music)

Release:2020 / EU – Original
Genre:Soundtracks
One of the best Piero Piccioni's contribute for the 7th art. Recorded for the homonymous documentary (1974) by Folco Quilici and Carlo Alberto Pinelli, looking for some people who reject civilization to withdraw in nature and peace, “Il Dio Sotto La Pelle” was released for the first time long time ago (2000), quickly becoming one of the most sought after records by many collectors and fans. Musica Per Immagini e Sonor Music Editions are proud to release a renewed edition of “Il Dio Sotto La Pelle”, where jazz, exotic and lounge music and psychedelia are mixed in an admirable way: introduced by the dreamy voice of Catherine Howe for It's Possible, Piero Piccioni's organ gives us fragments of a dazzling splendor such as Night To Come or Give Love A Chance, while Inventions and Katmandu handed down to the posterity the guitarist vein of the opera, demonstration of the period of great creativity crossed by the Italian composers, capable of filtering their traditional and classical action with some rock elements. “Il Dio Sotto La Pelle” is available again as double-LP album with tracks remastered by Claudio Fuiano from first generation master tapes and sequenced by Lorenzo Fabrizi, also including twelve unreleased gems, new graphics inspired by the original posters and designed by Luca Barcellona and Marco Ferretti's liner notes.

A masterpiece of suspense and no-holds barred action, Puppet on a Chain was
adapted from Alistair Maclean's 1969 novel and released in 1971. Directed by
Geoffrey Reeve and starring a granite-jawed Sven-Bertil Taube, the film's signature
boat chase (lasting eight minutes!) along the canals of Amsterdam was rumoured to
be the inspiration for the similar sequence in Bond's Live and Let Die. The action is
underpinned by Italian soundtrack maestro Piero Piccioni's blistering Hammondheavy
score. Piccioni composed around 300 soundtracks over four decades, but was
most prolific during the 60's and 70's, when he was sought out by directors including
Francesco Rosi, Mario Monicelli, Alberto Lattuada, Luchino Visconti, Bernardo
Bertolucci, Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica and Lina Wertmuller. A talented
self-taught jazz musician, Piccioni's soundtrack to Puppet on a Chain retains
effortless style, portraying a decadent 1970's Amsterdam overrun with drugs and
organised crime.

Easily comparable to the vaste number of movies from the erotic-dramatic genre popular between sixties and seventies, Alessandro Fallay’s Le Altre - a pretty much unknown director of Iranian origins - boasts an amazing soundtrack from the unforgettable Piero Piccioni, one of the acclaimed masters of the genre. The album moves between easy listening atmospheres to jazz and lounge, among Roma and Cinecittà’s summers parfumes. Everything topped off with woods, Hammond and guitars.

Soundtrack for the 1972 Spanish-Italian crime film directed by José Luis Madrid (a sort of baroque revisiting of Jack The Ripper). The Maestro Piero Piccioni is in a rare groove mode here, lost between acid jazz breaks and deep funk rhythms in what is the first ever vinyl reprint of a minor classic. An impressive variety of themes, with the Hammond organ often doing the lion's share of the work, the climate reminds us of the compositions of the late 60's of the master; memorable sessions that would lead to the publication of the classic posthumous 'Camille 2000'. The glamorous arrangements are fascinating, incorporating Mediterranean warmth through the US's R&B demarcation lines.

Four Flies launches its new jazz series dedicated to top Italian soundtracks from the 1960’s with this extraordinary work by Piero Piccioni: 3 Notti D’Amore (3 Nights of Love). Originally released in 1964 on CAM – CMS series, this record had a very limited pressing, and is considered one of the grooviest and jazziest scores composed by the legendary Italian maestro. Thanks to the support of an exceptional big band, Piccioni shapes a unique cool style, supported by a truly exotic and percussive rhythm section (“Come on Rome”, “Just For Fun”), full of charming flute phrases (“The Easy Way”) and baritone sax passages (“Pop’s Lolly”), and beautifully played by the two great soloists, Gino Marinacci and Gato Barbieri. Piccioni himself plays the piano on all the tracks, and created a magnificent, dynamic and sophisticated soundtrack. Pressed for the first time in its integrity, this soundtrack includes some missing numbers from the original record, and presents others in their extended full versions, such as “Sally’s Surf” (compiled in the essential Easy Tempo series). A superb album featuring marvelous tracks – from bossa to pop-jazz – this original soundtrack also features a couple of tracks by Carlo Rustichelli; two dreamy, sensually vocalized melodies. One of Piccioni’s lesser known masterpieces that truly embodies that golden time period, and a real beauty for every 60s jazz lover.

Anouk Aimée, Tino Carraro, Philippe Leroy, the great Piero Piccioni has created “easy listening” music such as foxtrots, band music, waltzes as opposed to serious music for large orchestra that dramatically describes all the historical and political aspect of the story.

The film, which was released on 22 February 1967, is divided into five episodes starring the fascinating Diva Silvana Mangano. “La strega bruciata viva” (“The Witch Scorched Alive”) directed by Luchino Visconti (1st episode): One winter evening Gloria (Mangano), a famous actress, arrives in an Austrian town to spend the evening together with some friends, who turn out to be not the good friends they were supposed to be : By taking advantage of her sudden illness they remove her make-up and look pleased at the small imperfections of the diva. After she has discovered to be pregnant and has a fight over the phone with her husband, the woman leaves again more disturbed than the day before, but hidden and splendid as a true diva for photographers. “Senso civico” (“Citizenship”) directed by Mauro Bolognini (2nd episode): A rich lady (Mangano) takes in her car a wounded driver (Alberto Sordi), but is only concerned not to be late with an appointment. “La terra vista dalla luna” (“The Earth Viewed from the Moon”) directed by Pier Paolo Pasolini (3rd episode): Ciancicato Miao (Totò), accompanied by his son Basciù (Ninetto Davoli), is looking for a nice woman to marry her. The man meets a beautiful deaf-mute girl with green hair who gets into their cabin and transforms it into a lovely home. A miracle! One day Assurdina (Silvana Mangano) dies in an accident, but she comes back under the guise of a ghost to meet the two poor ones and continues to help them in this way. The moral: to be alive or to be dead is just the same thing. “La siciliana” (“The female Sicilian”) directed by Franco Rossi (4th episode): The proud Nunzia (Mangano) causes a feud. “Una sera come le altre” (“A night like any other”) directed by Vittorio De Sica (5th episode): Giovanna (Mangano), a wife neglected by her husband (Clint Eastwood), dreams to make love in a stadium whilst being applauded by a crowd of men only. Five characters of women all embodied by the ethereal beauty of Silvana Mangano, the absolute diva of this film who is in a constant balance between the sacred and the profane, between hell and heaven. The Bolognini and Rossi episodes have virtually no music - except very brief fragments of atonal strings (possibly library music) in the Rossi episode and just a reprise of the “main theme” written by Piero Piccioni for the Visconti episode at the end of the Bolognini episode (an excerpt from the movie’s opening titles). The Pasolini episode was scored by Ennio Morricone (“Mandolinata” appeared on side A of the original Italian 45 rpm single on the United Artists label UA 3113) and subsequently on some compilation, whereas the Visconti and De Sica episodes were entirely scored by Piero Piccioni (the “Cha-cha beat” theme from the De Sica episode was issued on side B of the original Italian 45 rpm single on the United Artists label UA 3113) and a suite from the Visconti episode was later re-recorded by the author for a Japanese anthology devoted to the music for the cinema of Luchino Visconti. This CD (with a total duration close to 63 minutes) focuses only on the music of Piero Piccioni for this film. The tapes were kept in the private archives of M ° Piccioni and they have been found with the big help of Jason Piccioni, the son of the composer.

MUSICA AMORE is an extraordinary album (1972) by Maestro Piccioni which includes songs from various soundtracks showing his many facets. He utilizes the gorgeous voice of Shawn Robinson in "Right Or Wrong" and "Once and Again" (from giallo thriller “...Dopo di che, uccide il maschio e lo divora” aka "Marta” e "La Volpe Dalla Coda Di Velluto” aka "Eye Of The Hurricane”), the choir I Cantori Moderni di Alessandro Alessandroni, the band of I Marc 4 (M. Majorana, A. Vannucchi, R. Podium, C. Pes) and soloists of the caliber of Gianni Basso and Dino Piana.

An absolutely killer LP with superb arrangements, funky beats, exotic sounds ("Ebony Ride" from 077 Dall'Oriente Con Furore”), breaks, erotic lounge, beat, shake ("Abigaille" from “I Giovani Tigri"), psychedelia (“Fiore Nero" from “Inghilterra nuda"), and jazz, that stands as a key album in the world of Italian library music and soundtracks.

"Bora Bora" is a 1968 film directed by Ugo Liberatore who, under the pretext
of telling about a marriage relationship crisis, depicts the eponymous
Polynesian island as a place of perdition and absolute freedom, in contrast
to the strict rules imposed by Western society. This movie is also referred as
the 'debut' of the exotic/erotic film genre, which culminated a few years later
with the famous adventures of Emanuelle Nera interpreted by Laura
Gemser.
As it often happens in such cases, we're facing a mediocre film - also due to
the paltry budget with which such works were funded - accompanied by a
great, if not exceptional soundtrack. "Bora Bora" is no exception: Piero
Piccioni was, like Morricone and Umiliani, a real professional, able to
transpose feelings and moods in music; while listening to the ten tracks of
this LP, the listener has the vivid feeling of being transported in the
uncontaminated and fascinating Polynesians landscapes, with the addition
of hints of mystery and, inevitably, of eroticism.
This AMS Records reissue is the first one on vinyl after more than 30 years,
and faithfully reproduces the original 1969 Cinevox version. 180g black vinyl
edition, including a 30x30cm poster containing reproductions of vintage
flyers and lobby cards.
