The Darkest Wave
7" | 2017 | UK | Reissue (Polytechnic Youth)

Release:2017 / UK – Reissue
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Now repressed!Arguably the label’s highest profile release thus far; the mighty Pye Corner Audio joining forces with PY label mate Faten Kanaan for an ace split 45.In PCA's Martin Jenkins' own words: “Faten Kanaan first came to my attention with her wonderful cassette release 'EP'. We started corresponding shortly after that and I always had it in mind that we should collaborate on something. So when PY asked if I would contribute to the label, and then released Faten's 'The Botanist & The Archaeologist' LP things seemed perfectly aligned”.A side “The Darkest Wave” features pulsing icy synth drones over which Faten’s cool NY narrative owes nods to some 70’s Carpenter-eque VHS chillwave soundtrack, (not unlike some of Umberto’s work of the last decade or so.) A beautifully evolving, slow burner piece which over continuous plays reveals one of the year’s great A sides so far. The B side is a stripped down piece more in keeping with the seminal minimal synth singles of the late 70s beloved by both artist and label here. Indeed, Martin Jenkins’ sleeve art also doffs it’s cap to the artwork feel of some of those legendary post punk 45s.A magical 45 released as a one time pressing of 500 45s on vinyl only with Polytechnic Youth discography card. Incidentally.

LP | 2017 | UK | Original (Polytechnic Youth)

Release:2017 / UK – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
A magnificent full length, building handsomely on it’s esteemed predecessor’s huge acclaim; more utterly wonderful, occasionally playful analogue synth soundtracks, soundbites and tips of the hat especially, to the revered BBC Radiophonic Workshop output from 1968 onwards. The record also offers nods to the revered work of Conrad Schnitzler, Klaus Schulze and Edgar Froese yet sounds utterly new and contemporary; and you feel that a love of 1970s Childrens’ TV themes looms large during it’s creation also. Initially from Hereford, VIC MARS’ early releases were at first predominantly net based download affairs, however Japanese imprint “Symbolic Interaction” stepped in to release the magnificent “Kanransha” set, which in turn led to the Clay Pipe full length. He freely admits to there not being any particular concept to the album as such, here- but does point to the final track “Astrogator” being a “nod to when my Dad took the family all over Germany in 1980 in a clapped out Hillman Avenger. Even going into East Germany, which even as a kid kid I could feel how weird/oppressive it was there, plus I had never seen guards etc with guns before!”An absolute gem this one, in tasty reverse board sleeve and sure to go quick. A one time pressing of 500.

Release:2017 / UK – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Finally released on vinyl following a slew of acclaimed, instant sell out releases for both Polytechnic Youth and Ghost Box, comes the magnificent debut full length “Example One” from Brooklyn based Listening Center. Initially released on cassette only via the “This is care of” imprint in 2012, the call for a vinyl release grew pretty intense for both artist and label so -here you go. Enjoy, it’s a beauty! The set provided an introduction to the -then new- artist, and explored aspects of library music, kosmische musik, and lost soundtracks. Dusty analogue synths and drum machines, along with fragments of speech and field recordings provide a soundtrack as we clear a path through the undergrowth of memory. The material was recorded in Brooklyn and mixed at This Is Care Of studio in 2011, and originally included “Titoli”, (released by Ghost Box as part of their 7” study series, paired with an epic remix “Town of Tomorrow Today” by Pye Corner Audio.)This nigh on essential reissue -a first time on vinyl- via Polytechnic Youth, now affords us a another look through Listening Center’s retro-futuristic window, and is dressed as beautifully as it sounds; reverse board sleeves printed inside and out and released as a one time pressing of 500 only.

Release:2016 / UK – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Following a batch of incredible, exclusive online / digital releases, Polytechnic Youth releases the projects’ first physical release, and it is a beauty.Polypores (aka Stephen James Buckley) is based in a tiny home studio in Preston. He conjures up imaginary soundtracks from science fiction films of a bygone age that never existed. Think John Carpenter and Italo-disco filtered through Scarfolk Council’s tannoy system, and heard through a haze of long-banned sedatives and you’re in the right ballpark. “The Fialka Transmissions” was created with 3 analog synthesizers and a sampler. It was inspired by voices picked up on a shortwave radio, a winter spent immersed in dystopian fiction, and the increasing possibility of that fiction becoming a reality. Coldwave synth tones and decrepit dancefloor beats occasionally giving way to moments of decayed melancholy. The LP is a one time pressing of 300 only, on splatter vinyl and destined to sell it’s run out super quick….

Kehrschleife’ was Wolfgang Tilner-Barlow (1949 - 1984).The Kehrschleife recordings originated from the Mauer park fleamarket in Berlin about 3 years ago, (bought by Allan Murphy of Midwich Youth Club, and cleaned up from the original cassettes by him), they appear to be back-ups of the original Kehrschleife studio master tapes. The tapes are labelled (in German) NDR TV/SFB TV/Radio Bremen themes and Idents and in each cassette case is an A4 sheet detailing the track title/recording date/intended broadcast recipient, with a Kehrschleife/Wolfgang Tilner-Barlow Logo letterhead.According to the stall holder, the tapes were bought as part of a job lot of 1970's studio equipment from in the Uhlenhorst area, in the 1980's and passed on to him by a relative of the original job lot buyer. Little is known about Tilner-Barlow although the stall owner remembered the name 'Kehrschleife' as being a band from the late 70's Hamburg Neu Deutsche Welle scene. Murphy's research has turned up scant information such as Tilner-Barlow's name on the end credits of a few different 1970's German TV shows and a Rest in Peace notice at the end of an 'Arbeit Heute' show from 1984 on YouTube as well as the music appearing on a home video recording of Berlin in the 1970's (with apparently numbers stations recordings embedded)"A fabulous 8 track EP, playing at 45rpm in Polytechnic Youth house bags and sure to fly out super quick. The label may revisit these tapes for a further EP later in the year.

This one featuring the enigmatic, underground genius of MIDDEX. Cold as fuck, brutally icey synth blasts from the depths of South East London. In the man himself’s own words:“This is the second installation of suburban deliberation and galactic musings for Polytechnic Youth from MIDDEX. This is outer space hidden in the outer boroughs plastered over the flat thump of frosted perspex hearts”.A hand numbered edition of 250 7” singles with additional, various coloured, fold out poster inserts.

The next release on everyones’ favourite new minimal synth label / co-operative, sees a second release for the label from the enigmatically titled “The Assistant”. We know not of their whereabouts, or how many people record under this moniker; in fact we are only aware of an email address and the following cryptically offered, hastily handwritten lines for press release. Either way, this record is killer. It reaches you in a top loading sleeve designed by label head, Dom and is a numbered edition of 300 on white vinyl in ‘super sound single’ stickered sleeves.
