Tresor: True Stories - The Early Years English Edition
Tresor: True Stories
The Early Years English Edition
49,00 €*
Tresor: True Stories is the first printed excavation of Tresor’s legendary history. Digging deeply into its rich archives, the venerable institution has unearthed countless treasures from its over three-decade old history. Over 400 never before seen photographs, flyers, faxes and other artefacts illustrate a story that intersects with the most important social and musical trend in the modern history of Berlin.

The story is told with the voices of those that were there - over 40 protagonists share their first-hand reminiscences of the ‘big bang’ that launched techno into the world. Through the story of Tresor, the book charts the heady days of 80s West Berlin through to the explosion of new energy that midwifed in the new social reality of reunified Germany. This is a unique and essential printed monument to the institution that changed electronic music forever, and the city that allowed it to exist.

Dilla Time: The Life And Afterlife Of J Dilla, The Hip-Hop Producer Who Reinvented Rhythm by Dan Charnas
29,99 €*
"This book is a must for everyone interested in illuminating the idea of unexplainable genius.” —questlove

Equal parts biography, musicology, and cultural history, Dilla Time chronicles the life and legacy of J Dilla, a musical genius who transformed the sound of popular music for the twenty-first century.

He wasn’t known to mainstream audiences, even though he worked with renowned acts like D’Angelo and Erykah Badu and influenced the music of superstars like Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson. He died at the age of thirty-two, and in his lifetime he never had a pop hit. Yet since his death, J Dilla has become a demigod: revered by jazz musicians and rap icons from Robert Glasper to Kendrick Lamar; memorialized in symphonies and taught at universities. And at the core of this adulation is innovation: a new kind of musical time-feel that he created on a drum machine, but one that changed the way “traditional” musicians play.

In Dilla Time, Dan Charnas chronicles the life of James DeWitt Yancey, from his gifted childhood in Detroit, to his rise as a Grammy-nominated hip-hop producer, to the rare blood disease that caused his premature death; and follows the people who kept him and his ideas alive. He also rewinds the histories of American rhythms: from the birth of soul in Dilla’s own “Motown,” to funk, techno, and disco. Here, music is a story of Black culture in America and of what happens when human and machine times are synthesized into something new. Dilla Time is a different kind of book about music, a visual experience with graphics that build those concepts step by step for fans and novices alike, teaching us to “see” and feel rhythm in a unique and enjoyable way.

Dilla’s beats, startling some people with their seeming “sloppiness,” were actually the work of a perfectionist almost spiritually devoted to his music. This is the story of the man and his machines, his family, friends, partners, and celebrity collaborators. Culled from more than 150 interviews about one of the most important and influential musical figures of the past hundred years, Dilla Time is a book as delightfully detail-oriented and unique as J Dilla’s music itself.

Serval - A Life In Letters
35,99 €* 59,99 € -40%
“A Life In Letters” is an analytical monography of the graffiti artist SERVAL’s work. 300 pages to address two major questions :
The first is to decipher what makes the work of Serval - an emblematic artist of the Geneva art scene - so powerful and singular that it has earned him worldwide fame.
The second sketches, through the filter of the analysis of his work, the contours of what graffiti is: a pictorial discipline in its own right, with its history, its currents and its rules. An art form whose reality is often very far from its public image.
It is not a question here of just showing, it is a question of explaining, of bringing to light a know-how, an artistic evolution.

Questlove
Music Is History
26,59 €* 27,99 € -5%
Bestselling author and Sundance award-winning director Questlove offers a thrilling, music-driven ride through the last fifty years of American history.

In Music Is History, bestselling author and Sundance award-winning director Questlove harnesses his encyclopedic knowledge of popular music and his deep curiosity about history to examine America over the past fifty years. Choosing one essential track from each year, Questlove unpacks each song’s significance, revealing the pivotal role that American music plays around issues of race, gender, politics, and identity.

Music Is History focuses on the years 1971 to the present, not only the country’s most complex and rewarding half-century when it comes to the ways that pop culture and culturally diverse history intersect and interact, but also the years that overlap with Questlove’s own life. Music Is History moves fluidly from the personal to the political, examining events closely and critically, to unpeel and uncover previously unseen dimensions, and encouraging readers to do the same. Whether he is exploring how Black identity reshaped itself during the blaxploitation era, analyzing the assembly-line nature of disco and its hostility to Black genius, or remembering his own youth as a pop fan and what it taught him about America, Questlove finds the hidden connections in the American tapestry.

Complete with playlists organized around personal, playful themes that touch on everything from the relationship of hip-hop to music’s past to the secret ingredient in all funk songs, Music Is History is filled with and informed by Questlove’s preferences, perspectives, and particularities. It feels like both a popular history of contemporary America and a conversation with one of music's most influential and unique voices.

Sun Ra: Art On Saturn: The Album Cover Art Of Sun Ra's Saturn Label
79,99 €*
Preorder shipping from 28.10.2022
Drawn from private collections around the world, this is the first comprehensive collection of the Saturn label’s printed record covers, along with hundreds of the best hand-designed, one-of-a-kind sleeves and disc labels decorated by Sun Ra and members of his Arkestra. Considered the foremost exponent of Afrofuturism, Sun Ra mastered a wide array of styles that spanned jazz, R&B, exotica, Afro-hybrids, electronic, big band, solo piano, orchestral, experimental, and chamber works. In his 45-year recording career, he issued an epic number of albums and he was one of the first Black musicians to own an independent label, which he named Saturn, after the planet on which he claimed to have been born. The covers of Saturn LPs, issued from 1957 to 1988, are iconic—some rolled off commercial printing presses but many were hand-crafted. These records were sold at concerts, club dates, and by mail order. As collectibles, original handmade Saturn covers sell for hundreds, sometimes thousands, of dollars. More than just packaging for a slab of vinyl, they are works of art in their own right.

Sun Ra: Art on Saturn is the first comprehensive collection of all Saturn printed covers, along with hundreds of the best hand-designed, one-of-a-kind sleeves and disc labels, decorated by Ra himself and members of his Arkestra. Essays by Sun Ra catalog preservationist Irwin Chusid, noted Ra scholar John Corbett, and Glenn Jones, who in the 1970s signed Ra to a distribution deal that put countless homemade covers into circulation, add unique insights into the interplanetary life and work of Sun Ra and his Saturn partner Alton Abraham.

Historians have written extensively about Sun Ra and his music. This book is a tribute to the covers and to the uncredited visual artists and their rich imaginations. From the simple to the baroque to the absurd, the covers that sheathed Ra's discs reflect the tenaciousness of a genius who refused to compromise or relinquish control of his destiny.

IN DETAIL:

FRONT COVER: GANG STARR

Released as one of the last shots of true NYC underground before the oncoming wave of hip-hop commercialism, Hard to Earn was an artistic rebirth that came as Gang Starr was cresting, an intense batch of fresh material that felt like a deliberate growth spurt. "Moment of Truth is probably our most important album," says DJ Premier, "but Hard to Earn is my favorite Gang Starr album."

BACK COVER: LABELLE

As the 1960s faded away and the '70s shattered the veneer of innocence, three talented singers—Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash—shed their BlueBelles name, swapped their floor-length dresses in favor of denim, and reinvented themselves as a gritty soul trio. Over the course of six albums in six years, Labelle continued to grow, transforming into fierce and funky pop stars in wild costumes, and ultimately ascended to ubiquity with their Allen Toussaint–produced megahit "Lady Marmalade."

Most Dope - The Extraordinary Life Of Mac Miller
24,99 €*
The first biography of rapper Mac Miller, the Pittsburgh cult favorite–turned–rap superstar who touched the lives of millions before tragically passing away at the age of twenty-six

Malcolm James McCormick was born on January 19, 1992. He began making music at a young age and by fifteen was already releasing mixtapes. One of the first true viral superstars, his early records earned him a rabid legion of die-hard fans—as well as a few noteworthy detractors. But despite his undeniable success, Miller was plagued by struggles with substance abuse and depression, both of which fueled his raw and genre-defying music yet ultimately led to his demise.

Through detailed reporting and interviews with dozens of Miller’s confidants, Paul Cantor brings you to leafy Pittsburgh, seductive Los Angeles, and frenzied New York, where you will meet Miller’s collaborators, producers, business partners, best friends, and even his roommates. Traveling deep into Miller’s inner circle, behind the curtain, the velvet ropes, and studio doors, Most Dope tells the story of a passionate, gifted young man who achieved his life’s ambition, only to be undone by his personal demons.

Most Dope is part love letter, part cautionary tale, never shying away from the raw, visceral way Mac Miller lived his life.

Aaron Lupton & Jeff Szpirglas - Blood On Black Wax: Horror Soundtracks On Vinyl (Expanded Edition)

Blood On Black Wax: Horror Soundtracks On Vinyl (Expanded Edition)
22,93 €* 36,99 € -38%
Brand NEW & Expanded Edition! Packed with dozens of additional horror titles and containing limited edition enhanced packaging (foil cover elements + guilded foil page edges).

The expanded second printing of Blood on Black Wax: Horror Soundtracks on Vinyl profiles several additional soundtrack titles, reflecting the consistently strong trend of horror soundtracks being committed to vinyl. The full-color, 272-page book spotlights the intricate (and often rare) artwork on the LP sleeves, as well as album reviews, release details, and backstories. New titles include mainstream entries such as Child's Play, The Silence of the Lambs, Children of the Corn, Silver Bullet, and Cujo, alongside cult hits such as Troll / Troll 2, Bad Taste, Spookies, Ghoulies, and Children Shouldn't Play with Dead Things.

Co-author Aaron Lupton: ''I'll never stop being proud of Blood on Black Wax, a passion project conceived by Jeff and I and brought to life by 1984 Publishing about my life's obsession: horror soundtracks on vinyl. I'm so proud to see the book get this deluxe second printing with even more cool records to add to your shelf.''

Co-author Jeff Szpirglas: ''It was a thrill to go back and revisit Blood on Black Wax with Aaron, and not just as an excuse to re-listen to the Maniac Cop soundtrack. With the new edition, we redoubled our efforts to speak directly to a bunch of composers such as Jay Chattaway, Joe Renzetti, and Jonathan Elias about their work on classic horror film scores. Plus, I love it when I have to watch films like The Kindred for 'work-related purposes.'''

Are you obsessed with John Carpenter's iconic music for the Halloween series? Do you thrill to the unforgettable stabs of the Psycho score, or the pounding synth of Goblin's soundtrack to Suspiria? Do you find yourself being pulled into the hair-raising modern scores for the likes of Get Out, Hereditary, and The Witch?

You're not alone.

Blood on Black Wax is a defining horror soundtrack volume that spotlights iconic franchises such as A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Jaws, The Exorcist , and George A. Romero's Dead films, highlighting both the music and the amazing - often rare - artwork that graces the record sleeves. It also tells the stories behind the soundtrack, from the mouths of the musicians who made them, including John Carpenter, Fabio Frizzi, Christopher Young, Harry Manfredini, Charles Bernstein, Pino Donaggio, John Harrison, and more.

Aaron Lupton and Jeff Szpirglas, both of Rue Morgue magazine, have curated Blood on Black Wax to reflect their own passion for the darkest slabs of soundtrack music. Their journey into the fascinating history of horror movie scores contains reviews, release details, and wild stories about both renown and unusual releases - everything from the orchestral sounds of Hammer and Universal horror, to the truly experimental albums for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Eraserhead, to the outlandish punk and metal songs of '80s soundtrack albums like The Return of the Living Dead and Shocker.

Go back to your favorite horror films one more time, through the jaw-dropping, spine-tingling music that helped solidify their place in cinematic history!

''Blood On Black Wax takes a deep dive into the history of horror movie soundtracks and the cool AF artwork that cloaks them.'' - Alternative Press

Mick Garris (director / The Stand, Sleepwalkers; writer / Hocus Pocus) wrote a foreword for Blood on Black Wax, while composer Christopher Young (Hellraiser, Pet Sematary) penned the afterword.

Blood on Black Wax will contain limited edition enhanced packaging (foil cover elements + guilded foil page edges).

Peter Stelzig - Decades Volume 1: 1990-2000
Peter Stelzig
Decades Volume 1: 1990-2000
54,00 €*
This first volume is the beginning of a trilogy of books (Vol. 2 2000-2010 / Vol. 3 2010-2020) presenting 30 years of graffiti in Berlin. With a selection from thousands of photos, a picture of the development of the graffiti subculture in Berlin emerges in an authentic way. In addition, a variety of personal texts by the authors give an intimate insight into their experiences and perspectives. On the one hand, these texts convey a very vivid picture of the life of the Berlin graffiti scene, on the other hand, they allow the reader to experience the Berlin of days gone by.

The first issue portrays writers and crews between 1990 and 2000, with the fall of the Wall kicking off the graffiti boom in Berlin. In the aftermath, a huge adventure playground opened up for Berlin writers, with unresolved police courts and a sometimes disoriented adult world creating the ideal breeding ground for what is now probably the largest and most active graffiti scene in the world. The focus is on the application of graffiti on trains, which is also the subject of most of the pictures and texts in the book, but uncensored private pictures and graffiti on walls are also presented.

This first volume contains portraits with many photos and personal texts or comments of the following graffiti authors and crews:

Bas2, BOY, Cats, Chill, Chio, Deon, Disne, DMB, Drum, FOK, Inka, KEL, Kmer, Kamel, Lyte, Odem, Poet62, REW, Ruzd, Dsyer, Sekd, Shek, Some, Steak, TFB, TOK, Torch, Town, VDS, WEX and many more.

Also included in the book are mixed chapters with hundreds of photos of many other graffiti writers and crews from the 90s.

Brain Food: A Daily Dose Of Creativity
15,00 €*
For something many of us love and admire, creativity is a wildly misunderstood thing. One big mistake is seeing creativity as something only a few of us are born with, while the rest of us just have to sit back and watch the special people have all the fun.
But that’s not true at all. Creativity is in all of us. And just like with anything else we’re all capable of, like speaking with animals or levitating or controlling the weather, it comes more naturally to some of us than others. Some of us just need a little more practice. The more we practice, the better we get. And the better we get, the more energizing and encouraging it all becomes.
We can learn to let our minds stumble down new paths, discover the unexpected, and express what we find in words or imagery or emotions, abstract or concrete, big or small. Along the way, we realize everything can be a creative act. Planning meals for the week or walking to work can be as expressive and fulfilling as writing a novel or painting a portrait.
The 365 challenges in this book are designed to help you find the many creative sides of yourself, whether you incorrectly think you aren’t creative or you’re already a creativity world champion (not a real thing) who could use a challenge. Take on one brief a day. Or binge them all. Or roll the dice and let fate decide. There is no right or wrong. The worst thing that can happen? You’ll discover new ways of being creative at work, at home, and everywhere else in your life.

This issue’s collectors go way back. In Berlin, Julia Schoierer has assembled an impressive vault of vintage Nikes and adidas hoops classics from the 80s. Her analytical deconstruction of the real-life Tetris game in her apartment is an honest counterpoint to the image of ‘perfection’ often portrayed online.

On the other side of the world, Malcolm Hargrove is a man on a mission, snatching up every unconsummated catalogue gem he fiended over as a youngster in Mississippi. With a predilection for hitherto unloved DC, éS, iPath and Circa sneaks, his 400-strong fleet of millennium-era relics is suddenly back in vogue!

The trip down memory lane continues with the definitive history of the New Balance 550, a once-forgotten relic now blazing a new path for their bball throwback. Aside from that, we’ve got Hajime Sorayama’s Mizuno colab, Lizzie Armanto, Edison Chen, Studio Hagel, EQL, SoleSavy, Mschf, Goods and Services, BespokeIND, Color Me Fresh, Zhuijun Wang and a sneak peek of some exceptional upcoming releases.

And yes, there’s an intriguing SF x atmos x Asics ‘Alley Cats’ colab on the cover – all will be revealed in due time!

Kid A Mnesia: A Book Of Radiohead Artwork
29,99 €*
Whilst these records were being conceived, rehearsed, recorded and produced, Thom Yorke and Stanley Donwood made hundreds of images. These ranged from obsessive, insomniac scrawls in biro to six-foot-square painted canvases, from scissors-and-glue collages to immense digital landscapes. They utilised every medium they could find, from sticks and knives to the emerging digital technologies. The work chronicles their obsessions at the time: minotaurs, genocide, maps, globalisation, monsters, pylons, dams, volcanoes, locusts, lightning, helicopters, Hiroshima, show homes and ring roads. What emerges is a deeply strange portrait of the years at the commencement of this century. A time that seems an age ago – but so much remains the same.

Regardless if you’re doing it for the purpose of relaxation or for releasing a lot of stress, having a night out could have an almost purifying effect. Things then will certainly look even more peachy when your name is on the guest list. It’s just perfect in case you want to have a life but it shouldn’t be too real.
People who aren’t on the guest list are officially uninvited. At least that’s how you should feel when your name made it on one. You put so much energy, smalltalk, omnipresence and social media action into it, you deserve to be treated like royalty. If there’s one constant you can count on, then it certainly is that being on the guest list still is the ultimate status check.

For our GUEST LIST issue, Lodown was hanging out backstage, enjoyed private views, got drunk at uncountable vernissages, took a closer look at flyer culture, high-fived a few bouncers - and even let a few guest art directors take over a couple of pages.
All for the simple reason that you don’t have to queue. You’re welcome. Now let’s dance.

- WHY Ebay... Every once in a while you get introduced to the work of an emerging artist that immediately makes you reflect on why you fell in love with graffiti, graphic design, fashion and getting inked in the first place. It is as if you suddenly got invited to observe things from an edge, wondering when and why you suddenly stopped to rethink - or think ahead - the many possibilities these mediums offer while admiring the audacity, presumed playful easiness and variety of ideas on display. And one of these artists goes by the capricious name of Why Ebay.

- Richard Kern... There are quite a few protagonists that portrayed the seedy underground of NYC in the 80s, and East Village-based Richard Kern certainly is one of the most prominent ones. As a filmmaker he was one of the driving forces behind the Cinema of Transgression, for which he explored hysteria, sex, drugs and violence through the punk rock lens - topics he committed to for a large part of his professional career as a photographer as well.

- Cali Thornhill Dewitt... Creating subversions of the American flag. Being a roadie for grunge royalty. Running a publishing house. Doing radio. Preparing for solo-exhibitions worldwide. Running a record label. Actually, the creative endeavors of celebrated artist Cali Thornhill DeWitt are too numerous to list, but it’s safe to state that the collaboration with Abloh and Kanye a few years back might have been the moment that catapulted his name into the mainstream consciousness once and for all.

- plus more elaborate features and visual awesomeness from the likes of: Marta Blue, Mark Mulroney, Clamm, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Icy & Sot, Dry Cleaning, Matt Hansel, Mike Osborne, Djinn and many others.

Highlights of our GUEST LIST issue include…

DAVE SWINDELLS… In the UK, some people refer to the London of 1988 as “Year Zero“, because it seemed to have kickstarted a club scene in a way that hadn’t existed before. It was the year Acid House was hitting England’s capital (and beyond) big time. It was the time of clubs like Future, Shoom and Spectrum. And luckily East London-based photographer Dave Swindells was there to capture it all.

CIVILIST… Everybody’s favorite Skate Shop in Berlin opened its diary for us. In the end, it basically felt like chronicling the last years of skateboarding of Germany’s capital. It’s a Lodown exclusive, by the way.

NIKITA TERYOSHIN… Berlin-based photographer Nikita Teryoshin invites us to visit the back office of war with him, as his awarded, ongoing project “Nothing Personal“ takes a look at global defence business. Shot (so far) at fourteen different defence exhibitions worldwide between 2016 and 2020 the images capture a parallel world unknown to the vast majority of us ordinary mortals.

DAN WITZ… Embracing the possibility of a collective high through clubbing or a proper show can have an almost cleansing effect - because letting loose within the community of kindred spirits is something very comforting. And there hardly is any other artist capturing these moments of crowds going blissfully berserk than Brooklyn-based genius artist Dan Witz.

- plus more elaborate features and visual awesomeness from the likes of: EIKE KÖNIG, KUEDO, MARCELOA CANEVARI, PVA, LISA WASSMANN, LYZZA, DAVID HENRY BROWN JR. and many others.

Amazing unseen image of Bikini Kill live at Cbgb in 1990, by Mike Galinsky -- the accompanying feature is a lengthy photo essay exploring indie-rock in the early 1990s, with tremendous behind-the-scenes, unpublished black-and-white film images of Sonic Youth, Unwound, Mary Timony, Sleepyhead, Half Japanese, and more. In addition to Luc Sante’s ridiculously good ‘Pinakothek’ column where he goes off on one image, we have: John Colpits AKA Kid Millions on Miles Cooper Seaton (rip); the forgotten brilliance of bluesy hip-hop pioneers New Kingdom; the tape column on new tape releases; Susan Bernofsky on her Robert Walser bio; The Clean's singer and guitarist David Kilgour on the long-awaited Stephen reissue plus a lot more; the enduring goofy excellence of ELO’s ‘Out of the Blue’; Legendary Japanese hardcore guitarist Zigyaku from Gudon talks with Takeshi from Boris for the ‘One on One’ column; a look at Peter Williams (rip)’s installation at Mocad; and strange and delightful vernacular dome-shaped roadside architecture, just because.

Also Featuring:

Michael Klausman on the great new age synth Christian hippie slowpop duo Planetary Peace; Sarah Cozort on the works and lasting influence of artworld heroes THE Guerilla Girls; RJ Smith investigates Endless Boogie on the eve of the release of what’s probably the year’s best record; Andy Beta on percussionist Valentina Magaletti; infamous Japanese hardcore punk guitarist Zigyaku interviewed by Takeshi of Boris; guitarist Sarah Louise gets down and spiritual with saxophonist Archie Shepp; Adam Woodhead chats with the storied (sorry) bookseller and publisher Aaron Cometbus; Australian writer Peter Doyle really lets loose on classic Country Drinkin’ Songs; Kelley Stoltz and David Buick in conversation with Echo and the Bunnymen’s Will Sergeant and Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie on the eve of Third Man Books’ publication of their debut memoirs; “New Narrative” alum Camille ROY interviewed by Sara Jaffe; and a solid selection of Christine SHIELDS’s genius fantasy face paintings. Whew.

The Sneaker Freaker community rose to the occasion once again to produce some killer content from all over the globe. 2019 - Issue 42
5,00 €*
With over 200 pages chockablock with monster features and white-hot sneaker heat, Issue 42 of Sneaker Freaker will keep sneakerheads busy for days!

In our standout feature, Christian Tresser – la don of Dons! – reviews the Nike Air Zoom Spiridon he designed in 1997. The Spiridon collector feature with Morgan Weekes in the UK adds form to the sleek Zoom Air function.

Staying in the 1990s, the adidas Ozweego and New Balance 850 are both graduates of 1996. In the former’s case, we pieced together every iteration since day one, while an interview with 850 designer Stephanie Howard reveals the true story behind that missing ‘N’ logo.

We also take a trip to toytown for back-to-back features. In Perth, Josh De Vaney’s insane $100k collection of Jordan memorabilia inspired a true life detective story that saw him travel tens of thousands of miles to Ohio to prove his point. On the flipside is Duane Perera. A native of Toronto, his ingenious IG project known as ‘Duane Shoots Toys’ is a kooky carnivale that stars Obama, MJ (both of them), Super Mario, Buzz Lightyear and the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

Chi Modu also talks us through his favourite photos of rap’s golden years. From Snoop to Tupac, he shot ‘em all! Check our limited edition cover with Eazy-E rocking adidas Campus on the hood of his Impala!

In other news, Dan Natola takes us on a guided tour of Bodega’s witty sneaker posters. We also catch up with Rustyler, whose IG feed looks more like a cookbook than a sneaker store, and Richie Culver, who coats counterfeit sneaks in concrete, all in the name of art.

COVERS
There are four covers to choose from including Eazy E, adidas Nite Jogger, Nike Spiridon and Ronnie Fieg’s GEL project. Grab one or grab em all!

Unfortunately we have no chance to select any copy since these are chosen randomly.

Lodown Magazine
Issue 106 - Vandals
9,00 €*
“Vandals“ by Lodown Magazine is an artistic exploration of how to do things differently and civil disobedience.

Highlights include…

• JOHN DIVOLA... As he nears 70, the legendary LA-based artist might have quit spraying symbols inside abandoned buildings, but his artistic acts of vandalism still feel irritatingly fresh after forty years.

• DAVE RIMMER... The former British music journalist and Smash Hits! editor talked with us about his forgotten masterpiece “Once Upon A Time In The East“, in which he tells true tales about mischief in West/East-Berlin before the Wall came down - his classic “Eastie Boys“ prank included.

• HARIS NUKEM... The celebrated photographer just had a solo show titled “Humans“ at the NR Project art space London in late summer, proving once again that “good vibes“ is a very flexible expression, as the very majority of his stunning portraits capture individuals consciously on a collision course with society and its established norms.

Nas - Illmatic by Matthew Gasteier
Nas
Illmatic by Matthew Gasteier
15,99 €*
Contradiction, the yin and the yang, the simultaneous existence of two competing realities, and the larger than life persona that depicts populist realism are at the core of Nas's debut album, Illmatic. Yet Nas's identity -as an inner-city youth, a child of hip-hop, and a Black American - predicts those philosophical quandaries as much as it does its brazen ambition. Partly because of that recklessly broad scope, the artistic impact of Illmatic was massive. The record finds its place in the greatest transition in hip hop up to that point, the spot where the streets and the charts collided.
