Klaus Layer uses his sampler as an instrument to construct the many layers of music all wrapped up in his songs. Klaus' fascination with antique bizarreness and the surreal grants his work a unique and instantly recognizable personality that transcends his inspirations. It's a sound that demands and rewards repeat listens.
On Restless Adventures, the beloved East Coast aesthetic of his influences are inverted somewhat with what seems to be a preoccupation with the sublimity of the organic green world. The effects are minute, subtle, and highly effectual. The ambient sounds of nature that Klaus organically weaves between layers of snappy drums and warped samples could be described as both psychedelic and organic ... unfamiliar, yet strangely comforting.
Kudos to Klaus for delivering a brave and experimental album to be enjoyed on numerous levels; it swings right for Hip-Hop heads, has layers of exotic instrumentation on top, and potentially something else in-between for listeners who like to look for narratives in their music. Perhaps most impressively, it does all of this a lot more cohesively than the title would have you think. The (Restless) Adventures of Captain Crook continue.
Completely produced with the MPC 2000 XL and a Tascam 8-Track machine. Mastered by K-Def!

Repress! 7" Very rare and sought after remix single from MF Doom & Damu The Fudgemunk / In a world where we all have our respective tastes in music, one artist has managed to remain at the top our lists and top of the food chain. MF DOOM is a name you can't go wrong with. Pop aficionados and underground hip hop purists alike have been far from shy when giving the man his due praise during his 30 year career. If you're collecting vinyl, then it's safe to assume you own at least one of his cult classics like Operation Doomsday, Victor Vaughan, DangerDoom or MM Food all of which continue to be top performers years after their original release dates. His most popular is 2004's collaboration with Madlib entitled Madvallainy. Madvillainy has cemented DOOM as a legend in the minds of many. In 2011, Paris based production duo the Union collaborated with Doom for their album, Analogtronics on the single, "Coco Mango". This track would be remixed by DC's, Damu the Fudgemunk for a limited 7" that sold out in two weeks and became an underground smash in it's own right. Being a DOOM and Madvillain fan, Damu took to the opportunity to lay 2 remixes both inspired specifically by Madvillain's track "Rhinestone Cowboy". The results are commonly dubbed "CoCo Mango Sliced" (power outage mix) and "Coco Mango Diced" (boyscout mix). Coco Mango Sliced enlisted a sharp guest verse from Boston's Insight the Truncator. Fun fact: While producing the remixes, Damu lost power in his studio literally after recording a demo of the the first mix and lost the unsaved be in his MPC. That 2 track demo would become what was published, hence the (power outage mix). Instead of recreating the exact same beat he lost, Damu took the same sample and put a different swing on it, giving us remix number 2 (boyscout mix). Since it's original release, these remixes have become known as "the DOOM record you've never heard" due to it's short shelf life. Though a repress would've made perfect sense in 2011, it's now 2019 and these tracks are finally getting a proper reissue. The cover art was handled by well known artist Joe Buck of De La Soul fame and pays homage to DOOM using his signature hand drawn technique accenting a classic masked photo of Damu the Fudgemunk. Everything about this record screams high quality hip hop. Brought to you by one of the genre's most respected producers, Damu the Fudgemunk and Redefinition Records, fans now have an opportunity to own this gem documenting and celebrating one of our largest icons, MF DOOM.

Limited to 500. Surprise follow-up to "Homework". A side is blue & black, B side is colored vinyl, packaged in glossy jacket. "Kev Brown has done his Homework and he's back to teach us a new lesson with his Delve Into Classical Moog.

Artists are often measured by not just talent, but their portfolios. Pursuing one idea after the next and absorbing inspiration from an array of sources, some of the most memorable and storied artists are also great storytellers. With over 15 years in the business, Kev Brown has consistently been at the forefront of hip hop production. His instantly recognizable yet often imitated sound is a fabled treasure that makes his legacy not only a work in progress, but a work of art.

With such history, one might ask, what's left? If you ask Kev Brown, he'll assure you that there's unfinished business and still untapped territory to explore. 50 plus years ago it was a similar mentality that propelled visionary Robert Moog to the peak of what we classify as electronic music. Moog's adventurous engineering in synthesis was not just a creation to house his discoveries, but an open source universe that musicians of all ages, backgrounds and genres would develop into the infinite artistic space of today. From pop to rock to jazz to even country & western, there's no style of music that hasn't been graced by the Moog synthesizer. Hip hop is no stranger to this beast. Beginning in the early days of the 80's all the way to the sounds of Dr. Dre's G Funk to Dilla's Detroit takeover, the Moog is well traveled. Along it's journey, Kev Brown got acquainted with the sounds of this instrument through his own rite of passage. Who knows where the last chapter will conclude, but since Kev is far from done, he's proud to unveil his latest experiment.

Complete on colored vinyl and original artwork partially sourced from Moog waveform documents including Bob Moog's original hand drawn schematics, experience ""Kev Brown's Delve into Classical Moog"". Intended for explorers of sound and beyond..."

Berlin's boom bap specialist returns with an all-new album designed to shake up global soundwaves. Following up his experimental instrumental concept-album, "Society Collapse" and his "Abstractions" EP with rapper K.A.A.N. (Aftermath Entertainment), Klaus Layer's latest effort is his sixth album on Redef, but his first solo project to feature all vocals over his acclaimed productions.

Entitled Lost Track, Klaus assembled an international team of top notch MCs to grace his legendary sounds. Amazingly, the album features the Artifacts, Hex One, Simple One and most prominently Blu (Blu & Exile) on no less than four of the albums nine tracks. Musically it wouldn't be complete without scratches so long time collaborators Educut & Mr Nylson showed up to lace the producer previously known as Captain Crook with razor sharp cuts. Since his 2013 debut, he's built a strong reputation and loyal fanbase by doing one thing over and over: releasing great records. Lost Track is a pure rap album, and while it may be slightly less experimental than Klaus' recent output, it has a sound unlike anyone else in the genre and is deserving of any accolades headed its way. Rumor has it that KL has already completed another album ready to drop later his year. There's no doubt that Klaus is a true original with a passion for his craft that ensures that his supporters will always have something unique to explore. Conceptually, his latest record is a bit of a hybrid as it contains a mix of previously released loosies alongside new joints that are just now being unveiled to the delight his core following.

The album title refers to the rarity of this particular material and a nod to the bespoke graff burner ("Crook") which graces the album cover. Mastered by Klaus's good friend Figub Brazlevič, a successful German producer in his own right, Lost Track will sonically appeal to beat fiends yearning for the raw samples and smacking drums as well as pure rap fans who wanna hear more than mumbles. It's safe to say that the album doesn't fall short of any of his previous work so make it a point to add this to your collection before the end of the line.

Joe Buck said "Ten years is a long time for anything to hold one's attention." Things change. People lose interest. New things come along. Time flies. If something lasts 10 years, it has to be good, right?

It's almost 2020 and the output of hip-hop artists has increased dramatically in comparison to the genre's Golden Era(s). The abundance of emerging artists and new music doesn't often translate into timeless or memorable material. Sure, there is still a lot of great talent and new music to enjoy, but technology and the music industry have morphed so much in so little time, it has undeniably changed how we all create and consume.

Artists have picked up the pace, often releasing songs and new projects year round, while audiences have adapted, too, with higher expectations and even shorter attention spans. There's an endless stream of new and on-demand content, of all quality levels, all available right now. With that said, the shelf life of the average release is not what it used to be although some acts have found exception. In 2006 Insight the Truncator (Boston) and Damu the Fudgemunk (Washington DC), started recording their debut album under the moniker Y Society. Entitled, “Travel at Your Own Pace” (TAYOP) the album was first released in October 2007. In hindsight, the year would be one of the last years where albums were designed for long term digestion, and a handful of releases from the era survived as undisputed classics to the masses. Today, conceptual albums are almost archaic in a genre built upon storytelling and themes.

With TAYOP, Insight and Damu put the message in the music. The album title served the two as a roadmap to completion of its 13 songs and in return, the finished product serves as a navigation aid to the listener maneuvering through life within themselves and absorbing the outside world. From adventures of fiscal responsibility and imaginative tales of time travel to deconstructing one's obstructions and beyond, Insight's rhymes confidently steer the listener on whatever path they have chosen for themselves. The goal of the album is to empower. From start to finish, the array of uplifting lyrics is somewhat like modern day proverbs, but not proverbial.

Musically, Damu the Fudgemunk pulls from a deep body of influences, that give it it's unique identity and charm while paying homage to the foundations of their predecessors. The Legendary Marley Marl cosigned the album as a "refreshing" effort of the times. For a project of such character, the general reception does not reflect the magnitude of acclaim by its cult following. Receiving mixed reviews in a foggy time in the industry, “Travel at Your Own Pace” still managed to sell out of its original production. However, it has been long out of print for a decade. In response, original vinyl pressings have fetched several hundreds of dollars per copy in the used online markets of Discogs and eBay. The progressing careers of both Insight and Damu in addition to their label, Redefinition Records (also celebrating 10 years) prove that in a murky 2007, they all knew where they were traveling and how to arrive. Even with their growth, a “Travel at Your Own Pace” repress has remained an inevitable inquiry and reoccurring expectation to loyal supporters. The answer is here and the wait is finally over.

Packaged in a deluxe 2LP 10-year anniversary edition, “Travel at your Own Pace” is back on store shelves featuring brand new cover art, 5 rare & unreleased exclusive tracks, a special insert poster complete with lyrics and limited edition colored vinyl.

In conjunction with the 2LP, the album's lead single, "Never Off (On & On) B/W "Pyramids to the Ghetto" is available on 7". Considered a classic in 2017 for it's artistic quality and rarity, this is an album that won't go unnoticed by collectors. “Travel At Your Own Pace”.

"Society Collapse" is Klaus Layer's fourth full length album since 2013 and possibly his greatest musical achievement to date. Two years in the making, Klaus reveals an instrumental concept album full of genre-defying arrangements and hidden layers that will reward the listener over repeated plays. In just three years since his vinyl debut, Klaus has earned himself a reputation as Germany's most prolific and unique hip-hop conductor yet and this record will only further solidify that.

"In a society where unsettling truths about responsibility are given little thought, and short-sighted impulses have become commonplace, it’s easy to become disillusioned, but it gets a little harder when what we’re looking at are the bricks with which to build the future. There is never a time without consequence; history provides a resource of successes, failures and reflection. Eras of change ebb and flow and ours is once again uniquely positioned to cultivate an understanding of this interaction between the past and present to act upon what comes next.

This record is a musical manifesto for reclaiming that awareness, personal choice and inspiration for progression.” - Klaus Layer

Subtle Meditation Black Vinyl Edition
LP | 2019 | US | Original (Redefinition)

Release:2019 / US – Original
Genre:Hip Hop
Following 2016's Uncommon Knowledge and 2017's Abstractions, K.A.A.N. strikes again with his third release on vinyl. Entitled Subtle Meditation, this marks collaboration number three and counting for label partners Redefinition Records, but project number 20 something in K.A.A.N.'s overall catalog. The full length boasts 13 thought provoking tracks. The seasoned rapper explores subjects far and wide, including America's social climate, striving for success, colonialism, dealing with failure, depression, anxiety, creative passion and self destruction to name a few. Topics so relevant are guaranteed that in any moment or place in the world, people in bars, cafes, dinner tables and social media feeds are engaging in identical discussions. No matter what side of the spectrum you fall on, starting dialogue is most important when looking for solutions.

K.A.A.N. presents questions and offers a few jewels of advice throughout the album's 41 minutes, but leaves enough room for listeners to discover their own opinions. To date, the MC has been acclaimed for his once in a lifetime talent and his artistic bravery in creating an extremely diverse catalog. However, Subtle Meditation is K.A.A.N.'s comfort zone. Everything from the lyrical concepts, to song structure and the style of production were very therapeutic in helping him access his personal favorite sensibilities. He wasn't concerned with writing the next top 10 hit or meeting commercial guidelines, but preferably tapped into what moves him most as an artist. Born in the 90's and being a fan of the decade's artists, he went directly to the source. The album art was designed by visual artist Joe Buck who rose to prominence as De La Soul's in house artist and went to design for Nike, Jeff Staple and Lil' Wayne.

Production is handled by the likes of The 45 King who was behind Queen Latifah's beginnings and producer of Jay-Z's anthem Hard Knock Life and Eminem's classic Stan. Also in the mix is K-Def who produced Chief Rocka for the Lords of the Underground and worked with Marley Marl, Diddy, UGK and Ghostface. Don't get it wrong, this is not a "90's revivalist attempt". K.A.A.N employed the fresh talents of up and coming, uncharted Ukrainian producer Smuff tha Quiz who laid 70% of the album's beats. Results of this teamwork provide a very strong listening experience from start to finish.

One, could attribute the album's strength to executive producer, Damu the Fudgemunk. Known as an artist in his own right, Damu co-produced, mixed and mastered the whole album in addition to laying an array of top notch scratching on every track. Channeling old to new and popular to obscure sources, his input enhanced the storytelling element from song to song. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to K.A.A.N.'s music, this project will capture your attention and standout for years to come. The artist confessed that Subtle Meditation is one of his favorite releases ever.

To celebrate such an accomplishment it is being released on limited neon vinyl with full color florescent jackets and few surprises in the rollout. In an age of short attention spans and where disposable music is the norm, K.A.A.N.'s latest challenges those standards. With an album titled Subtle Meditation, the vocalist may be downplaying his process, but nothing short of higher level thinking went into making this 2018 masterpiece.

Breaking News!
The DMV's own, Kev Brown has announced his first solo rap album since 2005. Hailing from Palmer Park in Landover, Maryland specifically, after a 13 year hiatus, the producer/MC has finally prepared the sophomore sequel to 2005's influential cult classic, "I Do What I Do.” Entitled, "Homework", KB and Redefinition Recs have partnered to release an LP the game has been missing for too long. Now 13 years is a long wait, but don't think Kev has been idle in obscurity. He has been involved with several collaborative projects, garnered tons of production credits and released over a half dozen beat tapes during that time frame. It is also important to note, that he was in no rush to drop another rap album and preferred to compose "Homework" organically and at his own pace, in the comforts of his own home; hence the title.
Though Brown is known as one of Hip Hop's elite producers from heavyweights like Diamond D, Pete Rock, Busta Rhymes, Peter Rosenberg, 9th Wonder and Jazzy Jeff, he is a man of many hats. If you happen to meet him in person, he may be seen rocking a low pulled bucket hat, but he has been known toggle between titles of producer, MC, recording/mixing engineer, A&R and executive producer to boast a few. You might even catch him harmonizing on the occasional background vocal when he's inspired. To Kev's fans from all over world, they don't see a man of multiple hats, but a king wearing a crown. Even the likes of BJ Armstrong from Chicago Bulls first 3-Peat fame has been spotted publicly showing Kev's music appreciation. Kev has inspired thousands of aspiring fans as well as his peers. His trademark sound has been emulated over the last decade by so many artists and his sonic impact is very evident even among his contemporaries.
It all started on the Akai MPC2000xl and the rest is history (It should be noted that Kev appeared in one of or possibly even the very first “beat making” videos ever posted on youtube way back in 05/06). Kev Brown's debut album was groundbreaking in so many areas that the recording itself and Kev is cemented as legendary. It would be no surprise that Hip Hop would ask for the next installment and he's nowhere near done leaving his mark. "Homework" is a seamless nonstop exhibition of KB's range.
Kev raps confidently and wisely throughout the album's 27 tracks. yrically it's personal, introspective, comedic, observatory and witty delivered in Kev's smooth baritone style. Vocals are equally complimented by instrumentals all produced by the man himself and fluidly morph into instrumental compositions too good to be considered interludes.
These days Kev produces on whatever he feels like. The album was composed using several different samplers and recording technologies, but the vibe is never compromised. Returning to his roots, this a very "Hip Hop" album. The drums are are hard, the recordings are unpolished, samples are obscure, manipulated and unrefined.
"Homework" is the perfect game plan for today's climate. And for those who haven't, do your homework on this man. You won't be disappointed.

Following up his now sold out Redef debut (1996 Beat Tape, Vol 1), veteran producer DJ Spinna returns with another wave of hard hitting instrumentals. Entitled, Unpicked Treats Volume 1, the “Jigmasta” Spinna has prepared the first of an ongoing series of beats that all have a similar story. Making tracks for well over 2 decades, this latest project features a small collection of beats that were created with the intention of backing MC’s and vocalists, but were never officially used. Rather than archiving the material, DJ Spinna realized his fan base would appreciate these compositions in instrumental form. After all, he is the same producer who has garnered respect from the likes of J Dilla, Pete Rock, Jazzy Jeff and yes, the one & only Stevie Wonder himself. Without giving too much of his process away, Spinna challenged himself using a mix a the latest cutting edge software in tandem with some of his favorite gear from over the years. The end result is a glimpse into the spontaneous execution of top notch creativity. Listeners will have an unobstructed view into the ears and mind of the artist. Employing several different approaches, Unpicked Treats Volume 1 maintains a consistent vibe throughout it’s 12 songs. Whether, you love beat tapes, instrumental music or are entertained by the art of sampling, this record is a commodity. Plans for volume 2 are already in progress, but in the meantime, be sure to get acquainted with Unpicked Treats Volume 1 and the genius of DJ Spinna.

Fresh off the heels of his groundbreaking album “The Reflecting Sea” with MC, Raw Poetic, Damu the Fudgemunk’s latest collaboration is with longtime friend and fan favorite, Flex Mathews. Preparing to drop their album in the coming months, the 2 have assembled a hearty EP consisting of 2 cuts and specially arranged instrumentals from the upcoming full length entitled, “Vibrations & Dreams”. Featuring the lead singles "Burners" and "The Answer is Yes", the EP is sure to reel in hip hop fans and music aficionados alike. Some may remember Flex Mathews from the Damu produced cult classics, The Handsome Grandson EP (self released) and Live from Wonka Beats (Redef). Others may have encountered him on the road during his busy tour schedule or his recent debut solo album, “Hi, I’m Flex Mathews” with Unown (Oddisee’s Good Company). Both Flex and Damu have found ways to individually and collectively garner interests in their talents. With a running time of over
35 minutes, it was only fitting to call this release an EP. Launching the A-side is, “Burners” featuring California rap pillar, Blu of Blu & Exile fame and Boston’s finest himself, Insight (Y Society). The three MC’s spark the mic in a charismatic lyrical exhibition showcasing distinct styles from each personality. Providing the track, Damu the Fudgemunk locks a tight groove fusing ambient atmospheric noises and worldly textures for 10 mins and counting with extended DJ solos. All 4 parties reach the top of their games on Burners and create a one of a kind sound for hip hop in 2018. The posse cut is complimented, by the crowd pleasing call & response anthem, “The Answer is Yes”. This time, Flex is joined on the mic by his DJ, Damu. The duo presents a confident and fun perspective into staying positive and living the good life. If the lyrics aren’t enough to captivate the audience, the chorus is sure to catch the listener by storm to prevail that “Yes” is the answer. Musically this selection covers all bases of a hit record. The beat combines flavors from the West coast G-Funk, jazz, East coast hip hop and Go-Go which has the power to appeal to many audiences. The two hope that the songs message will inspire the masses to do their best and have a great lifetime. Side B of the EP continues with full instrumental versions. Fans of Damu’s last solo album, Vignettes will recognize how the lengthy production and arrangements of these 2 tracks pick up where the style of Vignettes left off. Whether you want good good hip hop songs or craving an extended program of instrumentals, Flex Mathews and Damu the Fudgemunk’s EP is built to satisfy.

As music continuously evolves, times change and new ideas and movements come & go. All of this functions in tandem with scientific, technological, social and political advancements in our society. The biggest component to that evolution is the people. There are creators and consumers. One cannot exist without the other. Throughout art, the audience defines quality, but artist has the power to introduce change and shift perception. Execution is key. The masses are always hungry for something fresh. Sometimes we're at the forefront of new trends and sometimes we find comfort innovating the past. No matter what, musicians have a responsibility to bridge the gap. Raw Poetic and Damu the Fudgemunk meet all of the above. Produced entirely by the artists, the new album "The Reflecting Sea" revisits sonic textures of yesteryear and combined with their own distinct ears for music, have created something uniquely foreign for the music world in our time. Speaking of the times, Raw Poetic's lyrical subject matter is nothing short of relevancy. Speaking from an observatory perspective in addition to his own personal experiences, the album's content is infinitely relatable.

Although known primarily as hip hop acts, both Damu and Raw P stretched out to expand what the genre is known for. The combination of elements from the mix of live instrumentation, improvisation and sampling to the range of styles including jazz, fusion, rock, electronic and soul make The Reflecting Sea unlike anything else. Captured and recorded in it's rawest form, the album is honest expression. Masterminding the festival sounds is Damu the Fudgemunk. His voice is absent from the recordings, but his presence is immediately noticed throughout the 40 minute exhibition. Packed with tons of beats, tons of scratching, original compositions, upbeat and signature atmosphere, there's no question who's behind the boards. With the average tempo of over 100bpm, this is one of the most energetic releases in Redefinition's catalog. Raw P and the Fudgemunk aim to revitalize listeners of all types with their original sound. They call it "The Reflecting Sea: Welcome to a New Philosophy."

Raw Poetic (MC), hails from the DMV area by way of Philadelphia. In addition to several collaborations with Damu the Fudgemunk, he's recorded 6 albums as a member of Panacea, 1 album with K-def, 1 album with Kev Brown and recent features with Brous One in which all have been met with critical acclaim.

Damu the Fudgemunk (producer/DJ) is a DC native who co-owns and operates Redefinition Records. With several successful releases as a solo artist, his music has garnered a reputation in the last decade for it's consistent quality and conceptual structure.

You asked and K-Def delivered. Gimme a break is a must-have 45 for DJs and Producers, whether used for sampling or scratching, this 7” is loaded with quality drums and sounds you’ll be glad to have within arms reach. The veteran producer / crate-digger dug in his bag of tricks and curated a solid stack of rare and previously unattainable breakbeats for you. Veteran? Yes! The NJ native earned his stripes in the 90s working with the legendary Marley Marl at the infamous House of Hits. He continued to evolve his techniques over the years and developed a style of scratching and production that was critically acclaimed and influential on his peers. Notably K produced for a wide range of artists from Ghostface Killah and LOTUG, to LL Cool J, P Diddy, UGK and Damu The Fudgemunk. Needless to say when this man shares the tools of his trade, it’s worth a listen. As a BONUS for all of the portable turntablists using Raiden Faders, Numark PT01s and the like, K even threw in 2 bonus scratch kits (collection of tried and true one shot phrases) for good measure.

The lead single from the highly sought-after “Travel At Your Own Pace” features the exclusive, previously unreleased B-side, “Pyramids”. This song includes a rare vocal appearance from Damu The Fudgemunk.

This the song's first official reissue and its first appearance pressed on a 45. Both songs packaged in full color double sided cover art.

Known to many as the group Y Society, Insight the Truncator and Damu the Fudgemunk celebrate 10 plus years of friendship and a creative partnership that hold the two in high esteem of their fans. The MC & producer's new 7" is a compelling display of why the duo have always been at the top of their game despite their reserved output since debuting as a team in 2007.

Surprising the world at the top of the year with their full length, "Ears Hear Spears" was a great way to sound the alarm for the excitement of new activity. Selective by nature, Insight and Damu's calculations have served advantageous in making moves and presenting listeners with the right music at the right time. The latest incarnation of this truth can be heard in the previously unreleased b-side track entitled "Pyramids to the Ghetto." Although it was recorded in 2008, it was archived and remained unreleased until now. Now in 2017 this particular song couldn't be any more relevant in how the artists analyze the effects racism of the past & present and its correlation to black plight throughout the Americas (both Insight & Damu drop verses on this track).

Continuing narratives of such legends as Public Enemy and Jeru the Damaja in which the track title quotes, the group individually presents short essays in rhyme form that give a candid account of what they've witnessed as black U.S. citizens living in the 20th and 21st Century. Not only are the social effects on the table for examination, but the positive and negative impacts a racist society has had on black contributions to art and culture are discussed. For the songwriters, "Pyramids to the Ghetto" is therapeutic in which harsh realities are confronted in an unapologetic manner contrasting the previous socially charged material in Insight and Damu's back catalog.

For the listeners, it's a history lesson and a call to motivate us all that history doesn't always have to repeat itself even when it's been the norm for centuries. Adversity and oppression historically have hold some back and made some stronger, but acknowledgement is the first step of progression.

The A-Side, "Never Off (On & On)" speaks on just that. It's a roadmap to dealing with everyday adversity, maintaining faith in self and striving to reach your full potential. Insight presents sermons of encouragement to the everyday person over the Fudgemunk's uplifting beat. The producer chimes in on the chorus with a few words of his own that insists to keep on your path and never fall off. The old saying goes, "Life ain't easy", but the group knows success is not unrealistic. "Never Off (On & On)" was the debut single from the debut album, "Travel at Your Own Pace" which has remained a staple in Insight the Truncator's and Damu the Fudgemunk's legacy.

It’s ironic that The Du-Rites (J-Zone and Pablo Martin) are already on their fourth album in three years when you consider the group began as a back burner endeavor. More ironic is the fact that the duo has become a live outfit over the past year, considering two multi-instrumentalists can’t play 2-3 instruments at the same exact time. With Jay playing drums and keys and Pablo playing guitar and also holding down keys (both of them contribute on bass guitar), it was impossible to execute The Du-Rites live on stage. So accepting the label of studio band early made it easy to crank out albums with 1960s frequency. With 2016’s eponymous debut, 2017’s Greasy Listening - ironically a tongue-in-cheek jab at their situation, dubbed a s a fake “live” album - and last year’s TV cop show score, Gamma Ray Jones, the Du-Rites had quickly and neatly carved a lane. But the time to grow beyond a studio outfit had come. And opportunity knocked. An offer to play NYC’s prestigious Symphony Space (at The Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theater) on Valentine’s Day 2019 was too sweet a gig to pass up on logistics, so The Du-Rites went back in the woodshed, adding Bill Harvey to handle bass guitar duties and Martin’s fellow Tom Tom Club member, Bruce Martin (no relation), to not only take over on keyboards, but add a whole new layer of groove by doubling up on percussion. The quartet rehearsed tirelessly through the winter of 2018-19 in preparation for Symphony Space and put together a greasy gig on Cupid Day that had folks ages 8 to 80 putting their dancing shoes on instead of spending $250 in some jive ass restaurant. Symphony Space was a giant professional leap and a whole lot of fun for the band, but to stop the roll there would put all that work and love for the stage in vain. So when Pablo and Bill dug up a filthy old mixing board with a unique sonic sheen that could capture the live show in all its greasy glory, the Du-Rites decided to hit it again for their fourth album (and first official live album), Soundcheck at 6.

In a world where we all have our respective tastes in music, one artist has managed to remain at the top our lists and top of the food chain. MF DOOM is a name you can't go wrong with. Pop aficionados and underground hip hop purists alike have been far from shy when giving the man his due praise during his 30 year career. If you're collecting vinyl, then it's safe to assume you own at least one of his cult classics like Operation Doomsday, Viktor Vaughn, Danger Doom or MM Food all of which continue to be top performers years after their original release dates.

Since its original release, these remixes have become known as "the DOOM record you've never heard" due to it's short shelf life.

Brooklyn's DJ Spinna continues to show the world, there's no shortage of beats from his arsenal. The legendary DJ/Producer returns with another installment of his beat tape series on Redefinition Records. Following 2018's Unpicked Treats Volume 1 & 2 series, his latest tape entitled, "1997 Beat Tape" ascends where 2017's "1996 Beat Tape" left off. This collection boasts production all composed and recorded during the year 1997. Spinna was able to locate the original DAT (digital audio tapes) from over 2 decades ago and provide an authentic look into his production from that era.

Known for being one the greatest producers of sample based music, like his other works to date, the "1997 Beat Tape" only solidifies his legacy as being so advanced without the aid of current software and technology. To many hip hop fans, there's something special about production from the 90's. Some of the characteristics from then still remain a mystery to artists of today, but continue to inspire in 2019. Terms like "boom bap", "raw" "real" and "gritty" get thrown around when describing production trends of that time, but we prefer just call it art or simply music. True artisanship and musicianship is on full display throughout this record. 15 well constructed beats are the perfect vehicle to transport vibes from jazzy to synthy to melodic and funky. When asked about the beat tape, Spinna was quoted saying, "I'm letting go of some more classic boom bap instrumentals. This time a batch of beats made in 1997, straight off the original DAT tape. A few of these are first drafts of beats that were released later on for several artists." There you have it. It doesn't get more genuine than that and straight from the artist. So now go get it!

Third album by The Du-Rites. Concept follow up album to their now sold out LPs The DuRites & Greasy Listening. Inspired by the musical scores of the iconic cop shows of the 1960s and 70s, Gamma Ray Jones is the musical backdrop for a lost 1972 TV series that never made it past the cutting room floor at NBC.
The Du-Rites have only been in existence for a few years, but the musical life of the NYC funk duo has been anything but quiet. Comprised of multi-instrumentalists Jay Mumford (aka J-Zone) on drums and keys and Pablo Martin on guitar, bass and synthesizer, the pair has already cranked out two albums, a handful of 7” singles and worked with a wide range of musical greats - ranging from Eddie Palmieri, to Ghostface Killah, to Robert Glasper, to Bobbito Garcia - proving they can groove with anyone. Through it all, Jay and Pablo have honed their composing and playing chops to go into uncharted territory for their third LP, Gamma Ray Jones.

Inspired by the musical scores of the iconic cop shows of the 1960s and ‘70s, Gamma Ray Jones is the musical backdrop for a lost 1972 TV series that never made it past the cutting room floor at NBC. With the rival crime-fighting shows of the day brawling for airtime (Mannix, McCloud, Banacek, Cannon, Barnaby Jones, The Mod Squad, The Rockford Files, etc.), Gamma Ray Jones proved too real, too violent and too expensive to produce, prompting the network to cease production on the series after the pilot episode, Get This Turkey Outta Here!, was filmed. The fact that the star of the show was none other than NYC’s own street justice warrior, Pedro “Gamma Ray” Jones, Hollywood execs didn’t want the smoke. The pilot sat in a film reel vault for 46 years with one glaring omission - the music. Enter: The Du-Rites.

Scoring the lost pilot with the utmost attention to detail, Jay and Pablo go from synth-driven big city overtures (“Gamma Ray Jones Theme”), to cold-blooded funk (“The Mean Machine”), to jazz and Latin-tinged soul (“Big Shirley’s Place,” “Amsterdam Ave.”), to cinematic, orchestral movements (“Go Down Swinging”). There’s even a chase scene (“Showdown!”), proving The Du-Rites not only studied the songbook for cop show funk (written by legendary composers Lalo Schifrin, Quincy Jones, Dave Grusin, Mike Post, etc.) - they spent many a night watching the shows in syndication.

Where 2016’s debut album brought funky grooves and vamps by the pound and 2017’s Greasy Listening brought a raggedy live nightclub band into your living room, Gamma Ray Jones is The Du-Rites musical backdrop for 20” long cars, Mateus wine, sport jackets, 10 minute fist-fight scenes and all that was gritty about New York City in the 1970s.

Another friday dedicated to the black gold!

Redefinition Records is honored to release Boston legend Edo. G's latest project. This isn't the first rodeo for either party as both entities have been involved in the making of hundreds of records respectively, but it is nonetheless a very special occasion. What's so important? The artist is humble, yet boastfully sums the answer with the music, "Edo. G Presents DJ Premier Vs Pete Rock". Having collaborated with both iconic producers on numerous songs over the years, this EP celebrates some of Edo's personal favorites from their legendary sessions, packaging key tracks as a commemorative 4 x 7” set. At four tracks deep plus the instrumentals (8 tracks total), it was difficult to pick the main single as any one of these cuts can stand tall on it’s own. Edo. G chose to leave it up to the masses and nothing's more hip hop than friendly competition hence the title "Edo. G Presents DJ Premier Vs Pete Rock".

Designed by celebrated illustrator artist Joseph Buckingham (widely celebrated for creating the iconic “De La Soul Is Dead” cover), the vintage boxing poster art direction brings the theme home and makes a statement. There are no less than 4 7” singles packaged in an 8 panel gatefold jacket, rich in colors, detail and with a proper tribute to each of the three featured artists. Need we say more? To paraphrase it, this is some of Edo.G's best work produced entirely by DJ Premier and Pete Rock. Dare to say it's not some of the finest Hip Hop of it's time. For those around the world blessed to catch the two producers go head to head on their string of international tours, this project is monumental as it was inspired by their sportsmanlike rivalry during their DJ performances. It is also is appealing to Edo. G fans as all tracks featured on this EP are long out of print and available for the first time ever on 45 with their exclusive instrumentals. This will be a classic hiphop collectors item. Beginning in the late 80's, Edo. G, DJ Premier and Pete Rock each are each in their fourth decade as recording artists. Now that deserves every bit of your respect.

Following up his now sold out Redef debut (1996 Beat Tape, Vol 1), veteran producer DJ Spinna returns with another wave of hard hitting instrumentals. Entitled, Unpicked Treats Volume 2, the “Jigmasta” Spinna has prepared the second of an ongoing series of beats that all have a similar story. Without giving too much of his process away, Spinna challenged himself using a mix at the latest cutting edge software in tandem with some of his favorite gear from over the years. The end result is a glimpse into the spontaneous execution of top notch creativity. Listeners will have an unobstructed view into the ears and mind of the artist. Employing several different approaches, Unpicked Treats Volume 2 maintains a consistent vibe throughout its songs. Whether, you love beat tapes, instrumental music or are entertained by the art of sampling, this record is a commodity.

According to Merriam-Webster, "Vignettes" means, a short descriptive literary sketch/brief incident or scene (as in a play or movie). The album is aptly titled where 15 musical scenes, each with their own unique settings, are stitched harmoniously together to provide a universal message to the audience in which they use the gift of their own interpretation. At just over 2 hours long, the listener is given an unfiltered front row performance into the heart, mind and soul of the artist.
This latest effort from Damu the Fudgemunk is of typical and unorthodox proportions. Musically, it's what you should expect from the man who brought you the How it Should Sound franchise, Supply for Demand and The Spur Momento Trailer. Intellectually, it's his most vulnerable piece of work to date. Hoping to challenge and inspire the listener through a musical narrative, it's content is open ended. Any resulting opinion that provokes thinking is encouraged given the message in this "Vignettes" album.
Even the art direction is intentionally abstract and undefined to welcome the attention of all people. The album is completely instrumental except for “Openings,” the lone vocal track which features Raw Poetic. Though the word vignettes may refer to something brief, Damu the Fudgemunk's album "Vignettes" has a long future ahead for years to come.

Long out of print, K-def's Redefinition debut album is back as a special edition reissue. "Night Shift", first released in the fall of 2011, boasts it's original track line-up with added bonus cuts of alternate mixes and some rare or previously unreleased tracks on LP. A brand new cover is only fitting for the occasion. Notable for K's diverse beat selection and immaculately presented soundscapes, "Night Shift" is an all around great value. In addition to the entertaining instrumentals, guest appearances from Rob O of I.N.I. fame (Pete Rock & Grap Luva) and an early collaboration with Raw Poetic make this album unbeatable. K-Def is known to many as the hardest working producer in hip-hop. He wouldn't hold such confined to normal business hours. With no curfew in sight, work shifts from days to nights.

Abstractions

Genre:Hip Hop
"Abstractions" is an international collaboration featuring Maryland’s lyricist extraordinaire, K.A.A.N. going in with his signature machine-gun-flow over some of German producer Klaus Layer’s most unique soundscapes to date.

Hip-Hop as a genre is big on labels and while many might consider the musical styles demonstrated on here to be “boom-bap” inspired with a side of “lyrical miracle,” there’s more than meets the ear happening here. The project is brief but thanks to the dense layers of both music and introspective wordplay crafted by the artists, listening to "Abstractions" is a very rewarding experience.

The two first collaborated on the deep cut, Sleepy Hollow People, from Layer’s Society Collapse LP in 2016. Out of mutual interests and positive fanfare, a whole EP was recorded shortly afterward. Hearing K.A.A.N. rap is a treat for rap connoisseurs as he dynamically delivers complex rhymes with a rare energy, rivaling even the best veteran MCs of yesterday and today. Klaus Layer is no slouch either when it comes to sound design. Evident by the fact that he has become a fixture amongst some of Hip hop's best European imports; his records fly off shelves and he can be found frequently performing in smoky Jazz clubs from France to Moscow and beyond. Known for his viral youtube MPC performances and releasing critically acclaimed instrumental albums year after year since his Redef debut in 2013, "Abstractions" is the first Klaus project to exclusively feature a rapper over his sought after sound. Instrumentals are included on the b-side. To date, both artists have found incredible success respectively that continues to grow (K.A.A.N. notably has recently relocated to Los Angeles but we are not at liberty to disclose any of the prescriptions he’s been writing… *Cough*). On "Abstractions", K.A.A.N. effortlessly proves why he's one of the premiere up and coming MC's adding to his growing back catalog that boasts millions of streams throughout every major online platform.

At a time when the world seems to be showing prominent signs of division, it's a record like this that is an example of how music brings people from all races and all corners of the world together. Despite being separated by the Atlantic across two continents, speaking separate languages and living under different government systems, K.A.A.N. and Klaus Layer's Abstractions shows no boundaries exist when great minds unit. It's bigger than hip hop.

“Developing the brain, always measure the aim, feeling pleasant in the present things could never be the same.” - Insight

With great excitement, Redefinition Records is proud to release the latest project from one of hip hop's most multi-talented artists. Making his Redefinition Records feature album debut, Insight the Truncator aka Andre Todman returns to the spotlight with a new album after a departure from the industry in recent years. Where was he and what was he up to? Well after a decade and a half in the business, dozens of respected records, countless national and international tours, Insight took a well-deserved hiatus to try other endeavors such as app development, electronics and social media strategizing in which he found major success. This shouldn't surprise longtime fans who may remember in as early as 1997, Insight created his own website, Insight.fm which even featured an interactive SP1200 and forums. (pre-social media and long before having a web presence was was on most artist’s agendas). Building a strong reputation for his live performance, his on-stage capabilities included not only rapping, but also producing, DJing and simultaneous live drawing. The triple threat from Boston (MC, DJ and producer) has dedicated his life to his creativity and name, catalog and content are a true testament to the kind person Insight is on and off of his recordings. Credited for mentoring and being instrumental in the career beginnings of many of today's staples in Boston Hip Hop and beyond, he also assisted a young D.C. native Damu the Fudgemunk, who later matured into an esteemed solo artist in his own right (and co-owner of Redefinition records). The 2 would first collaborate on one of the greatest hip hop albums of the 2000's as Y Society on 2007's full length, Travel at Your Own Pace. As a result, they formed a brotherhood that today is well into its second decade, bookmarked by this latest release. On Ears Hear Spears, “The Truncator” passionately speaks his mind through rhyme as The Fudgemunk handles all production.

Insight offered the following thoughts about the album: "Ears Hear Spears is a milestone in my life that reflects an intersection of so many paths. I had been living in Berlin and was frequently touring at the time for a 4-year stretch. I was just preparing to move back to the US. It was ’07 and the first generation iPhone was released so I started getting into app development, as the music industry was very rapidly changing. As an American under the Bush presidency, I had a lot on my mind. I had only met Damu once at a show in 2004, but we kept in contact for several years prior to our first collaboration. He called me with an album concept and a potential deal with Tres Records. I was on board and felt a responsibility to honestly express myself. We turned in Ears, however, we were shut down at the time by the label (Tres Records, now defunct). They simply said that this album was not what they wanted and expected from us. Damu and I only took about 10 days to do it, but instead of revising it, we shelved it. We quickly recorded a whole new album for label approval (Travel At Your Own Pace). Travel was released and time went on. Over the years, Ears became foreign to me. It got to a point where it seemed like my past speaking to my present. The album discusses the importance of togetherness, using your mind, not being manipulated by the music industry to represent ignorance and yet maintain rawness. Opportunities were limited due to the content in which some suggested was irrelevant and unmarketable. As time progressed, inequality, racism and ignorance moved to the forefront; dominating news and the rising usage of social media. This album became more relevant as time went by. It feels as if it is a duty to release it, before I release the new projects I have planned for the near future. Rather than just point out the negative, hopefully it can help us to find ways to cope and move our mind to a better place." Insight

Ears Hear Spears is the full-length counterpart to Insight & Damu’s 45 single "Know the Meaning” Remix. Considering the state of the world as we know it today, Insight’s lyrics couldn't possibly be any more relevant and timely than they are right now. This is especially notable being that the album was initially recorded in ’07 (it was unreleased until now). Throughout 10 outstanding tracks Insight delivers a diverse lyrical exhibition over a then 20-21 year old Damu the Fudgemunk's beats. There's an undeniable level of directness and sincerity in his lyrics which are artfully assembled in a manner that will astonish literary buffs, yet permeate the lives of everyday listeners alike.

In a genre where the most pivotal and defining moments occurred
over 2 decades ago according to popular to consensus, few artists
have managed to consistently achieve excellence and visibly
contribute from the early 90’s to present day 2000’s. With regime
changes, trend cycles, and technological advancements, producer
K-Def is in a class of “rare breed” artists that pridefully embody the
title veteran. So much can be said about what he has accomplished
throughout his 20 plus year career, but specifically in 2015, K’s output
and quality have stayed atop the conversation. Building a foundation
at Redefinition Records, who adopted the catchphrase “Quality Over
Quantity”, is not a question of how much, but rather how good.
For the label, K-Def is an exception. His latest offering entitled “The
Unpredictable Gemini” (1 of 2 new albums released simultaneously),
is a fully instrumental opus into the mind and soul of one of hip
hop’s greatest producers. The Unpredictable Gemini showcases
his evolving style and genre pioneering tricks and techniques he
continues to refine through the use of his unique production tools.
Keeping this project very close to heart and classified from the
public over the last 3 years, K meticulously produced, composed,
arranged, mixed and mastered well over 100 tracks before making
executive decisions on this album he wants the world to hear.
Speaking on the album, K-Def made the following statement: “I want
you to know that the sounds on this album display some of my true
inner feelings about music & life. With the advancement of technology
and my knowledge of using all kinds of recording equipment dating
back to the late 80’s, I present to you the unpredictable Gemini.

By popular demand, K-Def and The 45 King team up once again for another full length of continuous, golden era style instrumentals. Fans of the first won't be disappointed as volume 2 grabs the baton without missing a step. If you've followed the legendary 45 King since the 80's, his contributions on Back to the Beat Volume 2 are very assuring that after almost 3 decades and pioneering in rap production his signature sound is well intact. Complimenting 45 King’s selections, K-Def, a legend in his own right with massive discography dating back to the early 90s, used this album as an opportunity to have fun and venture away from the darker complex arrangements he is known for on his own, hence the album title. 15 tracks of bright and upbeat seamless grooves, perfect for listening anywhere, any day, at anytime. Volume 1 sold out quickly this release will likely move even faster. Collectors, don't sleep. Volume 2 of Back to the Beat may not be back for too long.

The title says it all: here are the leftovers from Damu's HISS sessions for volumes 3, 4 & 5. This nugget shouldn't be missed by any collector of classic boombap beats!

"With all the material considered for How It Should Sound (HISS) Volumes 3-5, it became difficult to determine which tracks would make the final album. While working on the album (3, 4 & 5), I lost track of the complete running time and how many beats were recorded. Selecting and sequencing songs for the definitive album was a task in itself for Redef, but once we decided to make 3 volumes instead of 2 as originally intended, things started lining up. This record features bonus material including outtakes and interludes that otherwise would have gone unheard. Being the 5th anniversary of the HISS franchise (2010-2015), we wanted to acknowledge the milestone by making more music available to our unsuspecting fans. HISS Abyss. Whether you consider yourself a hardcore vinyl enthusiast or general fan of music, the intent of this record is to extend the listening experience as presented in the How It Should Sound Series. Thank you all for the support." - Damu The Fudgemunk
Def Dee - D-1000
Def Dee
D-1000

Release:2015 / US – Original
Genre:Hip Hop
One year since releasing his Redefinition Records debut (Deja Vu), Seattle’s young beatsmith is back with his latest effort entitled D-1000, his first full instrumental album in over 4 years. Much of his work has come via collaborations with artists such as Roc Marciano, One Be Lo, Blu, Oddisee, yU, Damu the Fudgemunk, The Artifacts and Black Milk.

On this particular project, Def Dee is (mostly) letting the music do the talking. With praises from Oh No and cosigns from El Da Sensei, peers and listeners alike agree that Def Dee is one of the most talented and refreshing beat makers to emerge in the last five years. Is he a man or a machine? Maybe both. Dee produces, mixes, performs all scratching and even MCs on occasion. On D-1000, he assembled a potent collection of instrumental pieces that let the unique identity of his sound expand without vocal obstructions.

If you appreciate the vibes coming from Los Angeles, Detroit, the DMV and Germany, this album hosts the flag for Seattle, Washington. Fusing samples, live instrumentation, boom bap to off-beat and un-quantized sequencing, experimental, atonal and melodic textures, D-1000 defines growth that many artists strive for.

Conceptually, fans of the the Terminator franchise will notice homage through title and cover art. According to Def Dee, “Terminator 1 and 2 are some of my favorite movies, Terminator 2 specifically. I know... It’s a weird concept, but in this album you will hear references to both Terminators. When coming up with the album title I felt that this album had a very “metal” sound to it. Not in the sense of rock, but moreso just metal-ish. Combine the metal tones with the smooth swing of the beats it felt more like liquid metal. The title D-1000 is based on the T-1000 which was a machine made of mimetic poly alloy (liquid metal) sent back in time to kill the leader of the human resistance. The D-1000 is a man turned machine to create beats to potentially kill the machines (software ran music industry) to save the human resistance (vinyl sampling, drum machine hardware) straight off the MPC 2000xl. D-1000 has the ability to have swing, therefore being liquid metal. It was exciting to me and I hope you can hear that through the beats. This is an idea I’d like to build on and it could potentially be the first tape in an installment.”

This album offers the complete listening experience as an instrumental project, but includes bonus tracks featuring Dee’s hometown counterparts and an appearance from Los Angeles’ Blu on an exclusive remix of “Illest in Charge."
