Limited edition of 500 copies worldwide, exclusively available at hhv.de!Joe Buck said "Ten years is a long time for anything to hold one's attention." Things change. People lose interest. New things come along. Time flies. If something lasts 10 years, it has to be good, right? It's almost 2020 and the output of hip-hop artists has increased dramatically in comparison to the genre's Golden Era(s). The abundance of emerging artists and new music doesn't often translate into timeless or memorable material. Sure, there is still a lot of great talent and new music to enjoy, but technology and the music industry have morphed so much in so little time, it has undeniably changed how we all create and consume. Artists have picked up the pace, often releasing songs and new projects year round, while audiences have adapted, too, with higher expectations and even shorter attention spans. There's an endless stream of new and on-demand content, of all quality levels, all available right now. With that said, the shelf life of the average release is not what it used to be although some acts have found exception. In 2006 Insight the Truncator (Boston) and Damu the Fudgemunk (Washington DC), started recording their debut album under the moniker Y Society. Entitled, “Travel at Your Own Pace” (TAYOP) the album was first released in October 2007. In hindsight, the year would be one of the last years where albums were designed for long term digestion, and a handful of releases from the era survived as undisputed classics to the masses. Today, conceptual albums are almost archaic in a genre built upon storytelling and themes. With TAYOP, Insight and Damu put the message in the music. The album title served the two as a roadmap to completion of its 13 songs and in return, the finished product serves as a navigation aid to the listener maneuvering through life within themselves and absorbing the outside world. From adventures of fiscal responsibility and imaginative tales of time travel to deconstructing one's obstructions and beyond, Insight's rhymes confidently steer the listener on whatever path they have chosen for themselves. The goal of the album is to empower. From start to finish, the array of uplifting lyrics is somewhat like modern day proverbs, but not proverbial. Musically, Damu the Fudgemunk pulls from a deep body of influences, that give it it's unique identity and charm while paying homage to the foundations of their predecessors. The Legendary Marley Marl cosigned the album as a "refreshing" effort of the times. For a project of such character, the general reception does not reflect the magnitude of acclaim by its cult following. Receiving mixed reviews in a foggy time in the industry, “Travel at Your Own Pace” still managed to sell out of its original production. However, it has been long out of print for a decade. In response, original vinyl pressings have fetched several hundreds of dollars per copy in the used online markets of Discogs and eBay. The progressing careers of both Insight and Damu in addition to their label, Redefinition Records (also celebrating 10 years) prove that in a murky 2007, they all knew where they were traveling and how to arrive. Even with their growth, a “Travel at Your Own Pace” repress has remained an inevitable inquiry and reoccurring expectation to loyal supporters. The answer is here and the wait is finally over. Packaged in a deluxe 2LP 10-year anniversary edition, “Travel at your Own Pace” is back on store shelves featuring brand new cover art, 5 rare & unreleased exclusive tracks, a special insert poster complete with lyrics and limited edition colored vinyl. In conjunction with the 2LP, the album's lead single, "Never Off (On & On) B/W "Pyramids to the Ghetto" is available on 7". Considered a classic in 2017 for it's artistic quality and rarity, this is an album that won't go unnoticed by collectors. “Travel At Your Own Pace”.

Genre:Hip Hop
Limited edition of 600 copies on white vinyl worldwide - exclusive to Redefinition Records and hhv.de!According to Merriam-Webster, "Vignettes" means, a short descriptive literary sketch/brief incident or scene (as in a play or movie). The album is aptly titled where 15 musical scenes, each with their own unique settings, are stitched harmoniously together to provide a universal message to the audience in which they use the gift of their own interpretation. At just over 2 hours long, the listener is given an unfiltered front row performance into the heart, mind and soul of the the artist. This latest effort from Damu the Fudgemunk is of typical and unorthodox proportions. Musically, it's what you should expect from the man who brought you the How it Should Sound franchise, Supply for Demand and The Spur Momento Trailer. Intellectually, it's his most vulnerable piece of work to date. Hoping to challenge and inspire the listener through a musical narrative, it's content is open ended. Any resulting opinion that provokes thinking is encouraged given the message in this ""Vignettes"" album. Even the art direction is intentionally abstract and undefined to welcome the attention of all people. The album is completely instrumental except for “Openings,” the lone vocal track which features Raw Poetic. Though the word vignettes may refer to something brief, Damu the Fudgemunk's new album ""Vignettes"" has a long future ahead for years to come.

Genre:Hip Hop
Aptly titled, “1996 Beat Tape Vol. 1”, DJ Spinna’s latest instrumental album features 18 original beats all produced on the EMU-SP1200 & Akai S950 circa 1996. With over 25 years in business, the Brooklyn native is tied to nothing short of greatness and a legacy of diverse extensions since his beginnings as a house DJ in the late 80s. Many know Spinna for being in the elite group of seasoned party rockers where his resume includes collaborations with Stevie Wonder, Spike Lee, Michael Jackson & Prince (Soul Slam) tribute parties and several US/international bookings a month. Others regard him as one of house music’s best for his well-orchestrated dance tracks that blend jazz, soul & funk, Caribbean and Latin themes into his trademark, “Intergalactic Soul”.Producing in the mid 90’s with his underground duo, the Jigmastas, Spinna acquired national recognition for remixing Das EFX’s, “Microphone Master” single. He would gain larger recognition for his classic remix of De La Soul’s, “Stakes Iz High” single originally produced by the legendary Jay Dee aka J Dilla who became a friend in addition to being a contemporary. After a deal with Rawkus Records and producing some of Eminem’s early official appearances, Spinna achieved placements as a go to beat maker for legends, veterans and new MC’s. Though DJ Spinna has found continued success away from his roots, he has always satisfied his core audience whether producing for Homeboy Sandman, Phonte, The Jigmastas or his own solo projects.”1996 Beat Tape Vol. 1” is a rare peek into his deep archive. Much of the material was sourced directly from aged DAT tapes and floppy disks from the year 1996.Don’t let the 20-year lapse mislead that these compositions are primitive to today’s standards. The 18-track fully instrumental LP proves the advanced production techniques and sampling ideas Spinna employed are still ahead of its time long before much of the resurgence of 90s revivalist themes from today’s artists. The “1996 beat Tape” is the “Real McCoy”. All music was produced before computers, before accessible home studios and before instrumental hip-hop was a category. Many of the beats were made with vocalists in mind. Constructed on turntables, the EMU-SP1200 and the Akai S950, historians will appreciate the album cover designed by Joe Buck which depicts intimate photos of Spinna in his studio with the actual gear used to create the album’s contents. This is only the first volume and the debut venture between Redefinition Records and Spinna’s own Correct Technique Records. With 2 plus decades of unreleased material, who knows what the future holds, but history shows that when DJ Spinna releases an instrumental album, they sell fast.

He continued to evolve his techniques over the years and developed a style of scratching and production that was critically acclaimed and influential on his peers. Notably K produced for a wide range of artists from Ghostface Killah and LOTUG, to LL Cool J, P Diddy, UGK and Damu The Fudgemunk. Needless to say when this man shares the tools of his trade, it’s worth a listen. As a BONUS for all of the portable turntablists using Raiden Faders, Numark PT01s and the like, K even threw in 2 bonus scratch kits (collection of tried and true one shot phrases) for good measure.

Its been 2 decades since INI debuted under the guidance of producer Pete Rock. During the mid to late 90’s INI member Rob O and several other Mount Vernon, NY affiliates recorded a string of PR produced tracks that were released in various incarnations (including many promo only, white label & bootleg 12”s) until the early 2000’s when underground hip hop vinyl sales were starting to decline. Today, with the resurgence of vinyl and it’s high demand, Redefinition Records and ST. Nick Ent. have collaborated to reissue for the first time officially Rob O’s “So many Rappers” (produced & recorded during PR’s Soul Survivor era), and Meccalicious’ Meccalicious (recorded during the Center of Attention era). Both Rob O and Meccalicious would gain a lifelong fanbase from their performances on wax. If you’re fan a of Pete Rock and the whole MT. Vernon movement, these 2 selections are essential. Previous versions of these recordings have been long out of print and sought after, so whether you’re a long time fan or if this is your first time hearing these gems, this 45 is a must have. Limited edition of 500 copies on white vinyl, exclusively available at the Redef Shop and hhv.de!“Developing the brain, always measure the aim, feeling pleasant in the present things could never be the same.” - InsightWith great excitement, Redefinition Records is proud to release the latest project from one of hip hop's most multi-talented artists. Making his Redefinition Records feature album debut, Insight the Truncator aka Andre Todman returns to the spotlight with a new album after a departure from the industry in recent years. Where was he and what was he up to? Well after a decade and a half in the business, dozens of respected records, countless national and international tours, Insight took a well deserved hiatus to try other endeavors such as app development, electronics and social media strategizing in which he found major success. This shouldn't surprise longtime fans who may remember in as early as 1997, Insight created his own website, Insight.fm which even featured an interactive SP1200 and forums. (pre-social media and long before having a web presence was was on most artist’s agendas). Building a strong reputation for his live performance, his on-stage capabilities included not only rapping, but also producing, DJing and simultaneous live drawing. The triple threat from Boston (MC, DJ and producer) has dedicated his life to his creativity and name, catalog and content are a true testament to the kind person Insight is on and off of his recordings. Credited for mentoring and being instrumental in the career beginnings of many of today's staples in Boston Hip Hop and beyond, he also assisted a young D.C. native Damu the Fudgemunk, who later matured into an esteemed solo artist in his own right (and co-owner of Redefinition records). The 2 would first collaborate on one of the greatest hip hop albums of the 2000's as Y Society on 2007's full length, Travel at Your Own Pace. As a result, they formed a brotherhood that today is well into its second decade, bookmarked by this latest release. On Ears Hear Spears, “The Truncator” passionately speaks his mind through rhyme as The Fudgemunk handles all production. Insight offered the following thoughts about the album: "Ears Hear Spears is a milestone in my life that reflects an intersection of so many paths. I had been living in Berlin and was frequently touring at the time for a 4 year stretch. I was just preparing to move back to the US. It was ’07 and the first generation iPhone was released so I started getting into app development, as the music industry was very rapidly changing. As an American under the Bush presidency, I had a lot on my mind. I had only met Damu once at a show in 2004, but we kept in contact for several years prior to our first collaboration. He called me with an album concept and a potential deal with Tres Records. I was on board and felt a responsibility to honestly express myself. We turned in Ears, however, we were shut down at the time by the label (Tres Records, now defunct). They simply said that this album was not what they wanted and expected from us. Damu and I only took about 10 days to do it, but instead of revising it, we shelved it. We quickly recorded a whole new album for label approval (Travel At Your Own Pace). Travel was released and time went on. Over the years, Ears became foreign to me. It got to a point where it seemed like my past speaking to my present. The album discusses the importance of togetherness, using your mind, not being manipulated by the music industry to represent ignorance and yet maintain rawness. Opportunities were limited due to the content in which some suggested was irrelevant and unmarketable. As time progressed, inequality, racism and ignorance moved to the forefront; dominating news and the rising usage of social media. This album became more relevant as time went by. It feels as if it is a duty to release it, before I release the new projects I have planned for the near future. Rather than just point out the negative, hopefully it can help us to find ways to cope and move our mind to a better place." InsightEars Hear Spears is the full length counterpart to Insight & Damu’s 45 single "Know the Meaning” Remix. Considering the state of the world as we know it today, Insight’s lyrics couldn't possibly be any more relevant and timely than they are right now. This is especially notable being that the album was initially recorded in ’07 (it was unreleased until now). Throughout 10 outstanding tracks Insight delivers a diverse lyrical exhibition over a then 20-21 year old Damu the Fudgemunk's beats. There's an undeniable level of directness and sincerity in his lyrics which are artfully assembled in a manner that will astonish literary buffs, yet permeate the lives of everyday listeners alike.

The lead single from the highly sought-after “Travel At Your Own Pace” features the exclusive, previously unreleased B-side, “Pyramids”. This song includes a rare vocal appearance from Damu The Fudgemunk. This the song's first official reissue and its first appearance pressed on a 45. Both songs packaged in full color double sided cover art. Known to many as the group Y Society, Insight the Truncator and Damu the Fudgemunk celebrate 10 plus years of friendship and a creative partnership that hold the two in high esteem of their fans. The MC & producer's new 7" is a compelling display of why the duo have always been at the top of their game despite their reserved output since debuting as a team in 2007.Surprising the world at the top of the year with their full length, "Ears Hear Spears" was a great way to sound the alarm for the excitement of new activity. Selective by nature, Insight and Damu's calculations have served advantageous in making moves and presenting listeners with the right music at the right time. The latest incarnation of this truth can be heard in the previously unreleased b-side track entitled "Pyramids to the Ghetto." Although it was recorded in 2008, it was archived and remained unreleased until now. Now in 2017 this particular song couldn't be any more relevant in how the artists analyze the effects racism of the past & present and its correlation to black plight throughout the Americas (both Insight & Damu drop verses on this track).Continuing narratives of such legends as Public Enemy and Jeru the Damaja in which the track title quotes, the group individually presents short essays in rhyme form that give a candid account of what they've witnessed as black U.S. citizens living in the 20th and 21st Century. Not only are the social effects on the table for examination, but the positive and negative impacts a racist society has had on black contributions to art and culture are discussed. For the songwriters, "Pyramids to the Ghetto" is therapeutic in which harsh realities are confronted in an unapologetic manner contrasting the previous socially charged material in Insight and Damu's back catalog. For the listeners, it's a history lesson and a call to motivate us all that history doesn't always have to repeat itself even when it's been the norm for centuries. Adversity and oppression historically have hold some back and made some stronger, but acknowledgement is the first step of progression. The A-Side, "Never Off (On & On)" speaks on just that. It's a roadmap to dealing with everyday adversity, maintaining faith in self and striving to reach your full potential. Insight presents sermons of encouragement to the everyday person over the Fudgemunk's uplifting beat. The producer chimes in on the chorus with a few words of his own that insists to keep on your path and never fall off. The old saying goes, "Life ain't easy", but the group knows success is not unrealistic. "Never Off (On & On)" was the debut single from the debut album, "Travel at Your Own Pace" which has remained a staple in Insight the Truncator's and Damu the Fudgemunk's legacy.

Less than a year after their out-of-nowhere debut LP, J-Zone and Pablo Martin (aka The Du-Rites) return with their sophomore effort, “Greasy Listening”. The positive response to their 2016 self-titled offering inspired the NYC funk duo to become winter-spring studio rats and churn out 13 new tracks that both pick up where the initial offering left off and explore previously uncharted territory. J-Zone (drums, organ, percussion, turntables) continues to deliver funky rhythms and chunky drum sounds, while Pablo (guitar, bass, synthesizer, electric piano) returns with plenty greasy guitar moves and addictive melodies. But where Greasy Listening differs from its predecessor is in its composition and theme. Where their almost entirely instrumental debut often built upon jams and vamps, the tunes on “Greasy Listening” are composed and arranged with more attention to detail, feature some vocal narrations and rely less on soloing. Undermanned as a duo, the J-Zone and Pablo realize they would they need to tighten up the areas beyond their main instruments (drums and guitar, respectively) to prevent rehashing their debut. These limitations birthed raw (but charming) organ solos, electric piano riffs, greasy bass solos and commentary, all of which were almost absent on the first LP. This go round is also an opportunity to be tongue-in-cheek about being forced to multi-track everything as a two-man band. “Greasy Listening” is a “live” concert staged at a fictitious hole-in-the-wall chitlin circuit venue fittingly dubbed: The Collard Green Lounge. The aforementioned limitations have aided The Du-Rites in creating their own sound, which nods to both Pablo’s tenure as guitarist in new wave band, Tom Tom Club, and J-Zone’s former path as a hip-hop producer/ artist, but somehow remains its own entity. Welcome to the Collard Green Lounge for some nasty, dripping bacon fat Greasy Listening with The Du-Rites. Don’t tell your doctor you were here

In true New Jersey fashion, the dynamite MC duo of Tame One and El Da Sensei have joined forces with fellow Jersey vet, K-Def handling production. With a collective back catalog of hip hop gems dating back to the early 90's, the trio comfortably rejuvenates the spirit of the past in this 7" single. Thanks to the vintage 90s era production by K-Def, this is certain to delight fans of Artifacts' earlier work. The title itself, "Left In My Dust" samples one of the group's staples, "C'mon the Git Down" and this is as authentic as it gets for 2017. Instrumental on the B-side. Limited pressing.

"Society Collapse" is Klaus Layer's fourth full length album since 2013 and possibly his greatest musical achievement to date. Two years in the making, Klaus reveals an instrumental concept album full of genre-defying arrangements and hidden layers that will reward the listener over repeated plays. In just three years since his vinyl debut, Klaus has earned himself a reputation as Germany's most prolific and unique hip-hop conductor yet and this record will only further solidify that."In a society where unsettling truths about responsibility are given little thought, and short-sighted impulses have become commonplace, it’s easy to become disillusioned, but it gets a little harder when what we’re looking at are the bricks with which to build the future. There is never a time without consequence; history provides a resource of successes, failures and reflection. Eras of change ebb and flow and ours is once again uniquely positioned to cultivate an understanding of this interaction between the past and present to act upon what comes next. This record is a musical manifesto for reclaiming that awareness, personal choice and inspiration for progression.” - Klaus Layer

Europe has long been home to disciples of the East Coast sound, and Germany’s Klaus Layer is one of the most emergent of recent times. His late-summer debut, The Adventures of Captain Crook (Redefinition), cemented his trans-national appeal and saw the start of new collaborative efforts with underground favorite Blu. With his latest record, Ist Wie Ein Kreis (Its Like A Circle), Klaus continues his body of work with six instrumentals embodying his inspirations of dense boom-bap constructs and psychedelic sensibilities. Highly recommended.

Long out of print, K-def's Redefinition debut album is back as a special edition reissue. "Night Shift", first released in the fall of 2011, boasts it's original track line-up with added bonus cuts of alternate mixes and some rare or previously unreleased tracks on LP. A brand new cover is only fitting for the occasion. Notable for K's diverse beat selection and immaculately presented soundscapes, "Night Shift" is an all around great value. In addition to the entertaining instrumentals, guest appearances from Rob O of I.N.I. fame (Pete Rock & Grap Luva) and an early collaboration with Raw Poetic make this album unbeatable. K-Def is known to many as the hardest working producer in hip-hop. He wouldn't hold such confined to normal business hours. With no curfew in sight, work shifts from days to nights.

1996 Beat Tape Volume 1

Release:2017 / US – Original

Instrumental versions included!"Abstractions" is an international collaboration featuring Maryland’s lyricist extraordinaire, K.A.A.N. going in with his signature machine-gun-flow over some of German producer Klaus Layer’s most unique soundscapes to date. Hip-Hop as a genre is big on labels and while many might consider the musical styles demonstrated on here to be “boom-bap” inspired with a side of “lyrical miracle,” there’s more than meets the ear happening here. The project is brief but thanks to the dense layers of both music and introspective wordplay crafted by the artists, listening to "Abstractions" is a very rewarding experience. The two first collaborated on the deep cut, Sleepy Hollow People, from Layer’s Society Collapse LP in 2016. Out of mutual interests and positive fanfare, a whole EP was recorded shortly afterward. Hearing K.A.A.N. rap is a treat for rap connoisseurs as he dynamically delivers complex rhymes with a rare energy, rivaling even the best veteran MCs of yesterday and today. Klaus Layer is no slouch either when it comes to sound design. Evident by the fact that he has become a fixture amongst some of Hip hop's best European imports; his records fly off shelves and he can be found frequently performing in smoky Jazz clubs from France to Moscow and beyond. Known for his viral youtube MPC performances and releasing critically acclaimed instrumental albums year after year since his Redef debut in 2013, "Abstractions" is the first Klaus project to exclusively feature a rapper over his sought after sound. Instrumentals are included on the b-side. To date, both artists have found incredible success respectively that continues to grow (K.A.A.N. notably has recently relocated to Los Angeles but we are not at liberty to disclose any of the prescriptions he’s been writing… *Cough*). On "Abstractions", K.A.A.N. effortlessly proves why he's one of the premiere up and coming MC's adding to his growing back catalog that boasts millions of streams throughout every major online platform. At a time when the world seems to be showing prominent signs of division, it's a record like this that is an example of how music brings people from all races and all corners of the world together. Despite being separated by the Atlantic across two continents, speaking separate languages and living under different government systems, K.A.A.N. and Klaus Layer's Abstractions shows no boundaries exist when great minds unit. It's bigger than hip hop.

“Developing the brain, always measure the aim, feeling pleasant in the present things could never be the same.” - InsightWith great excitement, Redefinition Records is proud to release the latest project from one of hip hop's most multi-talented artists. Making his Redefinition Records feature album debut, Insight the Truncator aka Andre Todman returns to the spotlight with a new album after a departure from the industry in recent years. Where was he and what was he up to? Well after a decade and a half in the business, dozens of respected records, countless national and international tours, Insight took a well-deserved hiatus to try other endeavors such as app development, electronics and social media strategizing in which he found major success. I had been living in Berlin and was frequently touring at the time for a 4-year stretch. Rather than just point out the negative, hopefully it can help us to find ways to cope and move our mind to a better place." InsightEars Hear Spears is the full-length counterpart to Insight & Damu’s 45 single "Know the Meaning” Remix.

When you’ve been in an industry for over 20 years, adaptation andevolution are key functions in any field. If you’re Kevin Hansfordaka K-Def, you’ve seen good, you’ve seen bad, you’ve seen changeand on occasion, you’ve seen history repeat itself. For some artists, staying true and being innovative can be a fine line and a struggle. On one hand, a reputation is built from birth creating a connectionthat should always be maintained. On the other hand, growth orlack of growth will occur whether change is embraced. A producerlike K-Def would not still exist today in 2016 without being aware ofthose survival tactics. In a society dictated by technology, it’s hardto imagine the world as we know it without the devices and digitalplatforms we entertain unconsciously. As he continues to push himself, more recently K was inspired totrack down all of his original 90’s gear and works dating prior to hissoftware transition after a recent resurgence of old machines fromthe younger generation. That meant pulling out 2 full trash bags offloppy disks, revitalizing his old MPC 3000 to new condition, dustingoff rack sampler modules and hunting down his MPC 60ii whichwas the first machine he used debuting in 1993 under Marley Marl.Going through that process brings us K-def’s new album, The WayIt Was. The title sums it up. Instead talking about dues he paid andthe roots of his skill set, The Way it Was is a living demonstration foryounger listeners who grew up after the 90’s and his core fans whoremember the days of his Lords of the Underground, Real Live, MicGeronimo and World Renown productions like yesterday. Thoughmostly instrumental, frequent collaborator Blu appears on 3 tracks.Blu was inspired to record the socially aware, “The Boys” and thelively “Strawberry Lemonade” (featuring Damu the Fudgemunk andnewcomer Kunal) after hearing K-Def’s original demo cassettes. At11 tracks, “The Way It Was” is a must have for 90’s fans. It IS exactly“what it was”.

This is the limited double cassette edition of Damu's release "Vignettes".According to Merriam-Webster, "Vignettes" means, a short descriptive literary sketch/brief incident or scene (as in a play or movie).

Two years in the making, Klaus reveals an instrumental concept album full of genre-defying arrangements and hidden layers that will reward the listener over repeated plays. In just three years since his vinyl debut, Klaus has earned himself a reputation as Germany's most prolific and unique hip-hop conductor yet and this record will only further solidify that.

This project is truly one of those records produced solely for the diehard fans of Damu's How it Should Sound (HISS) Volumes 1 & 2, but might also be a great introduction for newcomers. This 2XLP collection contains more than beats, but seeds of ambition long before the (original) harvest. Straight from the archives, literally salvaged from the original recordings and unedited, never before have these demos been publicly available. One may think they're well familiar with the sounds, but this is an intimate look into a rather private artist's sketchbook. In no way should this replace HISS 1 & 2, but instead consider this as a collector's item.

According to Merriam-Webster, "Vignettes" means, a short descriptive literary sketch/brief incident or scene (as in a play or movie).

Ever order a kale salad and discover a neckbone in it? That's funk. Ever written a love letter on a chicken grease-stained napkin? That's funk. The Du-Rites are without a doubt the soundtrack to both of those situations, but by definition, The Du-Rites are a duo of New Yorkbased multi-instrumentalists comprised of Pablo Martin (guitar, bass, synthesizer) and J-Zone (drums, organ, bass, turntables, percussion instruments that require little skill). With influences ranging from the obvious (Booker T. & The MGs, Lalo Schifrin, Cameo, Kool and the Gang, The Meters, Jimi Hendrix, P-Funk, Motown, Herbie Hancock, and James Brown) to the obscure (overlooked late '60s funk bands Warm Excursion, TSU Toronadoes, and Willie & The Mighty Magnificents), The Du-Rites manage to bounce from improvisational, raggedy and psychedelic to tight and snappy with the skip of a track. Pablo's proficiency in punk, disco, pop and Latin and J-Zone's deep roots in hip-hop and jazz-funk combine to make one of the more off-kilter, but undeniably funky instrumental long players you'll dig into.

On his seventh solo album (and twelfth overall), “Fish-n-Grits”, J-Zone visits all the stops of an artistic and musical journey that spans well over two decades. Comprised of both limited edition 7” vinyl-only releases (dating back to 2014) and all new material, “Fish-n-Grits” is equal parts vocal and instrumental. The New York native uses his rap time to pick fights with the delusional state of the music industry, gentrification, the good and bad of nostalgia, police brutality, political correctness and hip hop’s generational conflicts, but never without his signature brands of humor and sarcasm intact.

Whenyour moniker is an acronym for “Knowledge Above All Nonsense”(K.A.A.N.), hip hop is going to hold you accountable. Accountabilityand credibility are not only evident in K.A.A.N.’s music, but equallyobvious in his work ethic and output. In a short time span, as hehas been honing and developing his craft in real time, the rapperhas organically amassed tens of thousands of followers acrossnumerous social media platforms and consistently generatedhundreds of thousands of plays via soundcloud and youtube fromhis multiple projects. Some of the biggest names in the industry haveextended admiration and support of K.A.A.N.’s movement. Cosignsfrom Chuck D, features on NPR, and regular performances on bothUS coasts are among the many stripes the newcomer has earned. His vinyl debut entitled Uncommon Knowledge on RedefinitionRecords adds another notch to his belt, in that K.A.A.N.had the honorof working exclusively with legendary music producer K-Def (RealLive, LL Cool J, Ghostface, Diddy) for an entire EP. Listening to himrhyme may remind an experienced hip hop head of rap’s greats andwhile K.A.A.N. respectfully gives credit where due when speakingof his influential mc’s, he attributes just as much of his inspiration tohis fandom and study of artists from other genres including Nirvanaand Johnny Cash. The old saying goes, “Knowledge is Power”, yetfor such a popular catchphrase, common sense is still arguablyuncommon. Leave it up to K.A.A.N. to take intelligence from rarity toreadily available for the masses.

Fans of the first won't be disappointed as volume 2 grabs the baton without missing a step. If you've followed the legendary 45 King since the 80's, his contributions on Back to the Beat Volume 2 are very assuring that after almost 3 decades and pioneering in rap production his signature sound is well intact. Complimenting 45 King’s selections, K-Def, a legend in his own right with massive discography dating back to the early 90s, used this album as an opportunity to have fun and venture away from the darker complex arrangements he is known for on his own, hence the album title. 15 tracks of bright and upbeat seamless grooves, perfect for listening anywhere, any day, at anytime. Volume 1 sold out quickly this release will likely move even faster. Collectors, don't sleep. Volume 2 of Back to the Beat may not be back for too long.

The title says it all: here are the leftovers from Damu's HISS sessions for volumes 3, 4 & 5. This nugget shouldn't be missed by any collector of classic boombap beats!"With all the material considered for How It Should Sound (HISS) Volumes 3-5, it became difficult to determine which tracks would make the final album. While working on the album (3, 4 & 5), I lost track of the complete running time and how many beats were recorded. Selecting and sequencing songs for the definitive album was a task in itself for Redef, but once we decided to make 3 volumes instead of 2 as originally intended, things started lining up. This record features bonus material including outtakes and interludes that otherwise would have gone unheard. Being the 5th anniversary of the HISS franchise (2010-2015), we wanted to acknowledge the milestone by making more music available to our unsuspecting fans. HISS Abyss. Whether you consider yourself a hardcore vinyl enthusiast or general fan of music, the intent of this record is to extend the listening experience as presented in the How It Should Sound Series. Thank you all for the support." - Damu The Fudgemunk

One year since releasing his Redefinition Records debut (Deja Vu), Seattle’s young beatsmith is back with his latest effort entitled D-1000, his first full instrumental album in over 4 years. Much of his work has come via collaborations with artists such as Roc Marciano, One Be Lo, Blu, Oddisee, yU, Damu the Fudgemunk, The Artifacts and Black Milk. On this particular project, Def Dee is (mostly) letting the music do the talking. With praises from Oh No and cosigns from El Da Sensei, peers and listeners alike agree that Def Dee is one of the most talented and refreshing beat makers to emerge in the last five years. Is he a man or a machine? Maybe both. Dee produces, mixes, performs all scratching and even MCs on occasion. On D-1000, he assembled a potent collection of instrumental pieces that let the unique identity of his sound expand without vocal obstructions. If you appreciate the vibes coming from Los Angeles, Detroit, the DMV and Germany, this album hosts the flag for Seattle, Washington. Fusing samples, live instrumentation, boom bap to off-beat and un-quantized sequencing, experimental, atonal and melodic textures, D-1000 defines growth that many artists strive for. Conceptually, fans of the the Terminator franchise will notice homage through title and cover art. According to Def Dee, “Terminator 1 and 2 are some of my favorite movies, Terminator 2 specifically. I know... It’s a weird concept, but in this album you will hear references to both Terminators. When coming up with the album title I felt that this album had a very “metal” sound to it. Not in the sense of rock, but moreso just metal-ish. Combine the metal tones with the smooth swing of the beats it felt more like liquid metal. The title D-1000 is based on the T-1000 which was a machine made of mimetic poly alloy (liquid metal) sent back in time to kill the leader of the human resistance. The D-1000 is a man turned machine to create beats to potentially kill the machines (software ran music industry) to save the human resistance (vinyl sampling, drum machine hardware) straight off the MPC 2000xl. D-1000 has the ability to have swing, therefore being liquid metal. It was exciting to me and I hope you can hear that through the beats. This is an idea I’d like to build on and it could potentially be the first tape in an installment.” This album offers the complete listening experience as an instrumental project, but includes bonus tracks featuring Dee’s hometown counterparts and an appearance from Los Angeles’ Blu on an exclusive remix of “Illest in Charge."

One of hip-hop's most consistent MCs, and notably one of a select few who has successfully constructing a solid discography since making his debut in '94 as one half of The Artifacts, El Da Sensei is more than familiar with the idea of what it means to Try Again. Opting for quality over quantity, the EP features a trio of songs alongside instrumental versions of each track. One of the reasons for El's longevity is that he never compromises his vision of what hip-hop is supposed to sound like and this EP is a true testament to his ethics. Lyrically El covers a lot of ground from introspective / mature verses over a mesmerizing piano-driven track provided by Joc Max (DJ Spinna), through braggadocio / motivational raps on"Last Round," a collab with the outspoken Detroit DJ/Producer/OG HouseShoes, however, the standout just might be the D-Smooth produced, Redman-approved, "Smoke To Me," El's highly descriptive ode to his favorite plant. If this brief but potent 10" leaves you wanting more, rest assured El is gonna keep delivering, just as he has been doing for nearly 20 years. Stay tuned for upcoming projects by El Da Sensei on Redefinition Records, including the return of the The Artifacts as well as collaborations with K-Def, Def Dee, Damu The Fudgemunk, Klaus Layer and more.

“It’s not what you know, but who you know.” This oft-used adage to describe success in nearly any facet of life is incessantly repeated for a reason: IT’S TRUE. Candidly, this is the common fiber that creates new relationships and provides an opportunity for the “knowns” while frequently relegating the “unknowns” to the back of the bin. Another vital component is talent – a necessary ingredient in any burgeoning career and a perquisite for sustainability. Enter “The World Famous” Tony Williams, a performer that not only features Kanye West on his latest 7” single “Another You” but can call him family as well. Sure, the familial bond is important, but let’s be real: Mr. West is not co-signing ANYONE on his solo albums (Tony has been on EVERY one) unless you can stand on your own merit, your own talent. Tony Williams performed at not one, but two different Inaugural Balls in 2008. Having a famous cousin can get you in the door, but performing in front of the President (twice) takes more than fame, game or name. Keep in mind: this is Tony Williams’ project and Kanye West is a guest rapping on it, a la College Dropout-era with soulful production provided by BINK!. The singing meshes seamlessly with the soundscape and you can feel the honesty in the creation of this song. It feels as if Tony and Kanye were at a family function and they took a break to hit the studio and this gem was the result. Redefinition Records (REDEF) saw the sincerity in this project, too, and is not only offering this song in a 7” format, but a CD of Tony Williams full-length King Or The Fool: An Opera, Volume 1 will be included for fans looking for physical product. Joe Buck provided the stellar artwork to go along with features from John Legend, Raheem DeVaughn and production by BINK!, No I.D., Hit-Boy and others. This teaming up of REDEF and The High Society highlights the desire to give fans something more than another free download of disposable music to be lost in the iTunes abyss. Attention is given to the music, the lyrics, the artwork and the packaging. “Another You” is representative of an album oozing with effort and a passion for this artform, which connects Tony Williams and the listener. Plus, enjoy a slice of history as this is the first 7” for either Tony Williams or Kanye West in their distinguished careers. It’s a family affair! ENJOY.
