Bobby Blackbird
The Master Blenda
10" | 2019 | EU | Original (Equiknoxx Music)

Release:2019 / EU – Original
Genre:Reggae / Dancehall
Preorder 14.05.2019
This first instrumental project from Equiknoxx Music’s Nick “Bobby Blackbird” Deane, was conceptualized in 2015, after choreographer Liane Williams needed theme music for her dance documentary: “5, 6,7,8 Diaries”. Starting life as a voice note sent to musical partner Gavin “Gavsborg” Blair, the ska tune was fully conceived in Deane’s mind from keys to horns. That sound was almost still born when he met in a near-fatal motor vehicle accident in July, 2015 leaving him hospitalized and bed-ridden for near 3 months.
With time to contemplate the importance of creativity in his life Bobby emerged from recovery determined to bring the song, and watercolour self-portrait to life. While metal pins held the bones in his hand together, Bobby enlisted the talents of friends to record “The Master Blenda” at Anchor Studios in one night. The ensemble featured none other than Grammy nominated Raging Fyah band members: Anthony “ToniDrumz” Watson (drums), Delroy “Pele” Hamilton (bass), Demar “Demz” Gayle (piano), and Courtland “Gizmo” White (guitar). For added authenticity, the Equiknoxx founders called upon keyboard legend Franklyn “Bubbler” Wahl of “The Professionals” fame and Grammy winning horn maestro “Stingwray” who delivered a blazing trumpet solo on top of all horn accompaniments.
Not content with revisiting one classic genre of Jamaican music, the Equiknoxx crew went genuine dub of the track on Side B, dicing the vocals of Exile Di Brave with the reverb-laced punches led by Jordan “Time Cow” Chung, Gavsborg and Bobby Blackbird himself. The track was tied together with a mix from Olo Mothashipp in Warsaw, Poland and mastered by Nick Sinna in Manchester, UK.
The result is a global labour of love and a monument to passion in creative endeavour. Inspired by a dancer, made sound by musicians and painted by the artist: The Master Blenda is true to its name. An artisan’s take on marrying spirits to become more than the sum of their arts. Hopefully Bobby has made the famed Appleton Master Blender (and his former mentor), Dr. Joy Spence proud.

Ska was the name given to the music that came out of Jamaica between 1961-1966. Based on the American R&B and Doo-wop records that the Sound Systems in Kingston Town used to play. However, the American records style started to mellow out, while the Jamaicans preferred a more upbeat sound. So the Sound System bosses became record producers to cater for this demand. Sir “Coxonne” Dodd and Duke Reid led the way putting the top musicians on the Island in the studio to make music unmistakably Jamaican. A lot of their early recordings were cut at Federal Records before they built their own studios.

After pressing the original song and K+Lab Remix, now this is the turn for Dj Maars’ remix. “Chaos” is a track where the Italian producer Woxow managed to persuade not just rocksteady legend Ken Boothe to appear on it but also Akil from Jurassic 5 and Blurum13 as well. The Australian producer Dj Maars, co-founder of Easy Now Recordings and master of the reggae-hiphop vibes, “plumps for a warm reggae riddim which is a natural fit with Boothe’s voice” (Monkeyboxing). On the b-side secret producer “Smile Davis” make his debut throwing a reggae flip on Woxow’s jazzy vibes “Look Around", featuring conscious lyrics from New York MC “Stimulus".

Taking the tradition of Jamaican music to utilise the same rhythm tracks for infinitum, here, as an accompanying release to the boogie version of I've Been Waiting For You (ERC081), is a twist on that ideal, not using the riddim but an actual remake of the song, with a digital reggae cover of Glen Ricks' classic. Released some 8 years after the Seraff Records single in 1991, the re-titled I Have Been Waiting saw Ricks team up with dancehall legend Philip "Fatis" Burrell and his Xterminator label. Starting with the Kings & Lions label to release the likes of Sugar Minot and Tenor Saw, Burrell soon launched the Vena (1985) and then Exterminator (1988) - later Xterminator - labels as vehicles to the rising dancehalls stars, to much acclaim. This limited 10" release showcases perfect digital re-versions, using Ricks' soulful vocals across a simple bells and horns topped "casio" riddim. The transference comes in traditional vocal and version, so who better to craft a special extended "digimix" than returning to the 'cut'n'paste' skills of DJ Duckcomb. Again he steps up, mixing seamlessly between originals, adding desk dubbing when required and bringing a new flavour to Emotional Rescue.

Number 12 in the cassette series for the Altered Soul Experiment collective. This time the Australian selector Lauren Hanson mixes up their new episode. TIP!!
Some words from the label:
Next to grace the ever soul and funk-oozing reels of Altered Soul Experiment, Australian-born Amsterdam-based DJ Lauren Hansom clocks in on Amila's imprint following a noteworthy appearance on his NTS show last year, plus a stream of top-shelf contributions to the waves of Red Light Radio. Taking good care of ASE's twelfth number, Lauren delivers an hour and a half-long sonic odyssey that spans across graceful downtempo reliefs and languid art-rock curves, meditative exotica and enticing synth-pop terrains. True to her sense of subtle liaison and non-formulaic offbeat dynamism that have become trademarks of her sets, Hansom confirms her unique status as one of the most respected and steadily impressive voices in our world’s new wave of vinyl-slinging selectors.
Flowing through the multiple aesthetic veins she keeps delving in with equal poise and panache, life itself speaks out - and the many changes that accompanied her change of landscape, from Sydney to Amsterdam - "moving home, people leaving, new people, adventures, uncertainty, surprise", et al. Imagine staring at the slo-scudding clouds and the abstract drawings of long-haul planes' vapour trails listening to this, trying to map the distance that cuts trajectories apart and joins seemingly splitting lanes together again. "It is the journey of life and my life as it seems; it is through music and through this tape that I can share with you some of those moments that have gone by. I hope with this, you can step into my mind, my world and take the journey with me."

Running Back welcomes Blood Shanti! The Falasha Recordings main man and brother of UK’s living sound system legend Aba-Shanti delivers four breathtaking versions of Feater’s “Time Millionaire” (taken from the album ‚Socialo Blanco") in proper style. It might sound like an odd pairing, but it’s a match made in heaven. Blood Shanti makes it sound as if the song was written for him. Pressed on one 10″ in appropriate design and sleeve (watch out for the lion) it sounds as good as any slice of British reggae ever made (horns and piano included). While the “Main Mix” is everything that lovers rock should be, the three dub versions deconstruct and dismantle the composition more and more as they go along. A modern take with an old-fashioned style of loving.

Soul Jazz Records are proud to present this new collection of music from the great Fashion Records, one of the
most important and iconic independent reggae labels to come out of the UK, and which ran from 1980 for nearly
20 years.
In that time Fashion released hundreds of records that successfully reflected, and indeed set, the changing styles
and perspectives of reggae music in the UK – from UK dancehall and lovers rock in the 1980s through to the
mighty rise of jungle in the second half of the 1990s.
While nearly all other UK reggae labels focused on releasing Jamaican music – from the early days of Island
and Trojan in the 1960s, through Island and Virgin in the 1970s, and Greensleeves that came up in the 1980s
– Fashion’s focus was firmly on music produced in the UK. This unique British perspective shaped both lyrical
content and musical fashion. And like all the great music labels – from Studio One to Blue Note – Fashion was
able to create a significant roster of its own artists.
Amazingly for a small independent label, a number of Fashion artists achieved mainstream UK chart and
crossover success – including Laurel & Hardy, Smiley Culture and General Levy. But although this success was
welcomed, crossing over into the mainstream was never the main focus for the label owners Chris Lane and
John McGillivray (who also runs the successful Dub Vendor record shop) whose starting point was always
primarily focused on producing quality music first.
In the early 1980s, Fashion Records captured the rise of the emerging British dancehall scene in its ascendency.
The large roster of first generation British-born artists and MCs on the label – including General Levy, Papa Face,
Smiley Culture, Bionic Rhona, Asher Senator, Laurel & Hardy, Top Cat and many more – often gave a unique
and sometimes humorous British lyrical perspective to Fashion releases, discussing everyday subjects, from
police harassment to road safety!
Throughout much of the 1980s and into the 1990s Fashion continued to release an almost relentless array of
UK dancehall releases as well as continuing with lovers rock, and the occasional dub releases. Then, in the mid-
90s, with the dancehall and reggae releases still coming on strong, Fashion released a superb series of early
jungle tracks linking Jamaican and British MCs and dancehall artists with young jungle mixers, re-mixers and
producers. By this time dancehall artists General Levy and Cutty Ranks had become the staple vocal samples of
literally hundreds of white label jungle records and Fashion took advantage of this, often getting young
producers to work in exchange for sample clearances – don’t get mad, get even!
This album is a subjective and scatter-gun ride through some of the many unique and heavyweight tracks to
come out of the Fashion stable that we love – some classics, some lesser-known, all 100% killer!

Pressure Sounds has thankfully made such a move away from the tired Record Store Day formula, to release a funk-alicious reggae box - for sale in Record Shops, at sometime near the end of April: Five stonking 7" from the house of Herman Chin-Loy.

Starting play with a Jamaican Funk banger, the wah-wah led, Temptations infused Medusa by H2O; the wild fuzz guitar of James Eastwood - a sublime cut of the Soul Vendors' Darker Shade Of Black; Chin-Loy himself as The Teacher, with a DJ cut of Augustus Pablo's East Of The River Nile; and Pablo in person performing two gracious gestures with his pipes, making this a box of sevens to cherish.

Pressure Sounds' screen-printer has gone into overdrive on this package, embellishing the box itself, also an enclosed poster, and a towel (tea towel to you). All this handiwork, and killer-no-filler sounds justifies the eye-watering price, there won't be many available, so get them while you can.

Washing the dishes will never be the same.

Taking his stage name from a classic Prince Buster song, Judge Dread (born Alexander Minto Hughes) was one of the most popular UK reggae artists of all-time. Known for his salacious humor and over the top live shows Dread was a favorite among UK rude boys. The year 1975 was a big one for Judge Dread, he released several highly charting singles, including his over-the-top rendition of Serge Gainsbourg's sultry classic "Je T'Aime" and the naughty holiday classic "Christmas in Dreadland." The album Bedtime Stories, originally released late in 1975 reached the Top 30 of the UK charts. Featuring those singles and a host of other Dread classics, the album showcases Judge Dread's unique brand of braggadocio mixed with self-deprecating humor. Another UK reggae classic from Judge Dread reissued by Radiation.

Madly rare album of Disco funk and reggae oddities from Rob (Ghanaian , Funky Rob, of 'Make It Fast, make It Slow' fame). " After many years the long lost Apocalyptic Disco Funk offering has been unearthed and re-released for the world to hear. Rob’s prophetic pre-apocalypse disco message, Hellfire, was originally released as a promotional LP by Nigerian label Taretone. Though a seminal work by Rob, disco stylings had fallen from vogue on the Nigerian dance floors. With the local airwaves dominated by artists like Félix Lebarty, Rob’s promotional release was shelved, and never got to see a full-scale commercial issue. Ultimately the master tapes were lost by Taretone and the album was doomed to obscurity for decades until its recent rediscovery by Tambourine Party Records.Hellfire is both a disco burner and a frantic warning about the impending end of the world. From the downtempo title track Hellfire to the floor-filling Glory be to Jesus, Rob will be sure to get his message across. Once the needle is dropped it is hard to deny that even if the world is coming to and end you can die happy listening to this album."

Bunny Lee as producer. Prince Jammy as engineer. The Aggrovators making the tracks. A Holy Trinity of Jamaican Music. Throughout the years, recorded music has been shaped by some enduring partnerships between producer and engineer, such as Teo Macero and Fred Plautt for Miles Davis, Jerry Wexler and Tom Dowd for Atlantic Records, and George Martin and Geoff Emerick for the Beatles. But possibly none were as prolific as the collaboration between Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee and Prince Jammy at King Tubby’s Studio between 1976 and 1982.

In 1977 and 1982 respectively, Conflict Dub and Dubbing In The Front Yard were released in London as white labels in extremely limited quantities. The two LPs found the triumvirate of Lee, Jammy and The Aggrovators on perfect form, with driving instrumentals, flashes of vocal beauty, and mixes that ripped apart and rebuilt traditional notions of sonic structure. Due to the nature of their limited release (not to mention the lack of artwork and even titles) the two dub LPs quickly disappeared into that mythic realm of records whispered about by only the most hard-core reggae collectors. This release is the first-ever reissue of these sought after LPs, and contains all the original songs in both vinyl form (double LP set with both albums on the original labels) and a lush double pack cd with 3 extra bonus tracks. The sleeve notes are by Diggory Kenrick with amazing photos by Howard Johnson, director of the influential Channel 4 documentary ‘Deep Roots Music’.
In 2018, Pressure Sounds celebrated its 100th album release since it’s founding in 1995. In that time, the label has been responsible for unearthing and celebrating some of the rarest, most influential and unique Jamaican records ever cut.

7FO: pronounced “nana f o” in English, “nana” being seven. Ryu no Nukegara: “dragon’s husk”. These are the only difficulties you’ll encounter here. This is warm, friendly, relaxed music, very “understandable” and yet intriguing, sure to appeal to fans of electronic ambient, dub and chill-out music, as well as artists like Haruomi Hosono, Captain Ganja, La Monte Young, Equiknoxx and Tapes. The Osaka-based 7FO combines groovily sparse electronic percussion with similarly sparse dub-feel synth bass, as well as pentatonic synth and steel pan melodies, the latter with an intriguing Okinawa/Sunda/Malay feel. Sparkling dub-influenced processing and thoughtful mixing gives us a music which is trans-oceanic, warm, and enveloping. Following releases on RVNG, Bokeh Versions and Metron, 7FO's new album Ryu no Nukegara is available on LP and CD, featuring a suite of four tracks and the 20-minute title track, whose titular dragon is Asian: a potent symbol of water, strength and good luck. “Subtle, playful. Softly spoken yet speaks volumes. This is powerful stuff! The absence of music like this is what made me start producing...” —Jackson Bailey/Tapes “Fairy-tale of dub new-age heaven. Rainbow scenery is spread out in my brain. It’ s hard for me to get out this world for while” —H. Takahashi

Cultures of Soul is very excited to announce this killer tropical reggae cover of Sade's Smooth Operator. Recorded at Circle Sound Studios in Miami the backing track was recorded by members of the famous reggae outfit Inner Circle with vocals by local area rising star at the time, Sabrina Rich. Sabrina (her real name is actually Sabrena) had been making records in her and her ex-husband's studio in their garage for years. The result of which was the disco 12" Exit/Whispering. Around this time Sabrina was performing in the Palm Beach / Boca Raton area of Florida and performed with Jimmy Bo Horne. Some time after Sabrina worked with a man named Kenneth Corey who mastered her recordings. Kenneth referred her to Roger and Ian Lewis of Inner Circle to help press up their vinyl. They became friends and around 1985 recorded Smooth Operator. During this time they were working and partying hard and experimenting with different ideas and sounds. The track was originally released in small numbers as sort of a demo and never really took off. Shortly after Inner Circle went on tour in Europe and the single went into obscurity until many years later when copies of the record turned up in New York and Toronto. This 12" includes a special discomix edit by Duckcomb a.k.a. Patrick Billard, DJ and record collector extraordinaire.

A superb single by vocalist Busty Brown who is somewhat of a mystery. Busty recorded for the usual roll call of Jamaican producers such as Lee Perry, Derrick Harriott and Clancy Eccles. Busty also sang in the ‘Crepe Souls’ for Herman Chin Loy and did his first recordings at Studio One. Busty also seems to have been a noted dancer on the Kingston club scene, and recorded this song for Bunny Lee in the early 70s. He has a rich voice and this 45 finds him superbly backed by the vocal harmonies of the Clowns. Comes with the version on the flipside in a hand stamped bag.

On the La Tempesta Dub label, a collection of dub versions from the Italian reggae band Mellow Mood’s latest album, Large, released last Spring. Paolo Baldini produces 12 authentic-sounding dub versions. The word “authentic” does not lack context here, since just like the original production, which was characterised by a “live & direct” approach both in the writing and recording, Large Dub was made following the spirit of the founding fathers of this musical technique when they recorded their dub versions: tracks run separately through the desk’s channels and are orchestrated in one take only, from start to finish, with no overdubs or additional computer programming.

Mastered in Austin, Texas by Chris Athens (Damian Marley, Erykah Badu, Ghostface Killa) and coming with a luxurious cover by California-based collage artist Dewey Saunders (Chronixx, Anderson .Paak), who also created the cover art for Mellow Mood’s Large and who now “dubbed” the graphics of that previous work.
