Burro Banton / Rider Shafique / Shanti D / DJ Madd Dub-Stuy’s riddim series returns with a fresh take on a Jah Shaka classicDub-Stuy returns with the second installment of their riddim series in which the Brooklyn-based collective pays homage to the tradition of Jamaican dancehall riddims with a fresh modern twist and versions from an international line-up of vocalists.Following an update of King Jammy’s Punanny riddim on the first release of the series, Dub-Stuy is taking on yet another classic. This time, DJ Madd brings the classic Kunta Kinte riddim into the 21st century with rolling drums, floating percussion, and weighty bass anchoring the timeless and irresistible melody that has come to define the riddim for generations of fans. First brought to the attention of UK dub fans by the mighty Jah Shaka , and originally recorded by a little known band from Battersea, Kunta Kinte has become a staple of dub music’s evolution, with its eponymous flute melody making numerous appearances over the decades in both underground and mainstream hits. For their 2017 edition, Dub-Stuy has brought three different vocalists from Jamaica and Europe to voice the riddim in a positive stance: Kingston legend Burro Banton preaches to the youth on ‘Nah Sell Out’; Rider Shafique, whose unique voice and delivery has been a hallmark of the Bristol scene for the past few years, travels Over The Oceans to celebrate the links between worldwide sound system fans; and finally France’s Shanti D takes a break from his work with OBF to bring it all together Inna Different Style. With Kunta Kinte Riddim 2017, Dub-Stuy takes us on a journey through the history of a famed riddim, connecting both style and sound from past dub sessions to current dancefloors.

Limited edition for Record Store Day 2017!U-Roy was a true reggae pioneer, dubbed The Originator for good reason. Bursting onto the Jamaican scene in the earliest 1970s, he pioneered the vocal approach called “toasting,” which in addition to branching out Jamaican music into a new era, was also heavily influential on an American genre in its infancy: rapping. On “Dread In A Babylon”, his third full-length, he stretches out over traditional roots grooves provided by the Soul Syndicate and Skin, Flesh & Bones bands, riffing on topics including love (“Runaway Girl,” a 1975 single released in the UK on Virgin Records); the Bible (“The Great Psalms”); walking the straight and narrow (“Listen To The Teacher”); and even his take on governmental policy goals (“Chalice In The Palace”). The album finishes with an instrumental version of Bob Marley & The Wailers’ “Trench Town Rock,” for good measure. U-Roy’s style and charisma are always on display, and – as with all of his classic records – the groove rules all. Presented on black vinyl with a poster of the glorious, ganja-drenched cover art, it’s the perfect chance to revisit one of the more underrated voices in Jamaican musical history.

Captain Ganja and the Space Patrolis one of the most singular dub albums that barely saw the light of day. A conscious effort to create a new breed of dub centred that around the cosmic synths and keys of Paul Thompson. Making use of an early Roland sampler, Tradition broke away from the standard drum / bass workouts that ruled the day. With the Captain, dub becomes an atmosphere, a feeling, not a formula - littered with babies cries, tribal chants, radiophonic noodlings and library soundtracks for space-age bachelor pads.

Brand New 2017 Recut - finally available on Vinyl for the First time. 2LP+Mp3 in full Original Coverart. The legendary movie soundstrack based out of Kingston, Jamaica in April 2008, telling the story of the original vocalists and musicians involved. The sixteenth release on the Moll-Selekta label shares its title with a wonderful film, a heartwarming homage to the golden age of rocksteady. It documents the recordings being made for this very album at the Tuff Gong studios, Kingston, Jamaica in April 2008, telling the story of the original vocalists and musicians involved. Excerpts from an all star reunion concert staged in Kingston and older archive material complete the picture. Never before in the history of Jamaica, which already occupies a unique place on the world map of song, its sound embraced by western popular music, has such an illustrious collection of singers and players been assembled. The album showcases 15 rocksteady classics in sparkling, deeply inspired new versions, recorded in the studio which also played host to album sessions of a certain Bob Marley. Under the musical direction of Ernest Ranglin, a guitarist of considerable renown not only on the reggae circuit, but also on the jazz scene, mixed by legendary engineer Errol Brown - in Duke Reid’s employ at the Treasure Isle studio in the sixties - and freshly arranged by Lynn Taitt.

Cementing his reputation as the star toaster with the small but popular El Paso sound system, based in the Waltham Park area, Dennis Alcapone was one of the first deejays to rise to prominence following U Roy’s breakthrough in the late 1960s. Born Dennis Smith in the rural district of Culloden, he became immersed in sound system culture after settling in western Kingston. Once El Paso became big on the sound system circuit, dental technician-turned-producer Keith Hudson brought him into the studio for his debut recordings, which led to a debut album for Studio One and hit material for Duke Reid, some cut in concert with his deejay sparring partner, Lizzy. Alcapone’s longstanding links with Bunny Lee yielded the excellent Guns Don’t Argue album, first issued in 1972, on which the toaster raps with style over some of Lee’s all-time greatest rhythms, including Delroy Wilson’s ‘Better Must Come,’ John Holt’s ‘Left With A Broken Heart’ and Slim Smith’s rendition of the Temptations’ soul classic ‘Ain’t Too Proud To Beg.’

The house band of Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee was formed in the mid-1970s by some of Jamaica’s most prominent and musically expressive session players. The shifting core line-up spun off from the Soul Syndicate and thus typically featured Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith and Tony Chin on guitar and Bernard ‘Touter’ Harvey on organ. Carlton ‘Santa’ was the main drummer, but Carlton Barrett of the Wailers band and ‘Benbow’ Creary were sometimes featured. Most crucially, on bass, Aston ‘Family Man’ Barrett shifted to Fully Fullwood (and occasionally, Earl ‘Bagga’ Walker), until Robbie Shakespeare took over, becoming the bandleader. The band was responsible for the popular ‘flying cymbal’ style that took Jamaica by storm, and you can hear it in abundance on this killer dub set from 1975, its excellent cuts of Cornell Campbell and Johnnie Clarke material mixed at King Tubby’s studio—a must for all serious fans of dub.

During the mid-1970s, the Aggrovators could do no wrong. This ace team of session musicians that was forged as an off-shoot of the Soul Syndicate were responsible for some of the biggest hits of the decade, recorded with Bunny Lee’s rising stars, such as Johnnie Clarke and his rival, Cornell Campbell. Following on from the great Shalom Dub set of 1975, Rasta Dub ’76 is another truly magnificent dub set culled from Aggrovators hits (by Johnny Clarke, Cornell Campbell and others); this time, the entire album was given a scintillating mix-down at King Tubby’s studio by the great Prince Jammy, and the sonic excellence has stood the test of time. Another must-have for all connoisseurs of dub.

Born Roy Samuel Reid in Saint Thomas in 1944, I Roy was one of Jamaica’s all-time greatest deejays. A natural-born toaster, his rhyming raps always sounded effortless, whether describing the harsh realities of the inner city, or making light of nonsense nursery rhymes. A former employee at Customs and Excise, he was first active on a sound system called Soul Bunnies in the rock steady era, moving to Son’s Junior in 1968, and later, to the legendary Supreme Ruler of Sound, defecting to the rival Stereo sound system after that. Hits for Harry Mudie and other producers soon followed, and after the killer debut album Presenting I Roy impacted overseas, the toaster began spending frequent periods in London. His longstanding working relationship with hit-making producer Bunny Lee led to some of his most noteworthy albums during the mid-1970s; the 1977 set Can’t Conquer Rasta is a superb ‘showcase’-style album, on which the toaster blows hard lyrics over five of Lee’s killer ‘rockers’ rhythms (recorded with the likes of Johnny Clarke), each complete with a corresponding Aggrovators dub on the flip, all mixed by Prince Jammy at King Tubby’s studio.

The foundation of this dub album was created by some of the finest sessions musicians ever to grace the studios of 1960’s & 70’s Jamaica. Their instruments were the cornerstone to countless Dub LP’s that began to surface in the early 70’s and continued on into the 80’s creating a whole new genre of music. As they did back in the early days of dub, the Kingston All Stars gathered together in Kingston, Jamaica at Mixing Lab Studios and laid down a series of riddims that would lay the groundwork for what comes next: the singers. Both Greenwich Farm rasta, Prince Alla, and falsetto, Cedric Myton of the The Congos, contribute vocals to the album but half of the riddims on this LP are, to date, unreleased, and have yet to be voiced.

UK legends Brother Culture and Vibronics meet new blood Bukkha and Madplate Sound for a 12” of deep steppers vibrations.Dub-Stuy Records kicks off 2017 in fine style with another heavyweight 12” release that brings together four artists from America, Italy, and England for a transcontinental dub collaboration inspired by Jah Shaka sessions. ‘Obliterate’ sees American producer Bukkha return to the label in collaboration with the Italian duo of Madplate Sound and longstanding UK dub legend Vibronics on remix duty. Brixton-based vocalist and regular Dub-Stuy collaborator B rother Culture provides the vocals. After hearing Dub-Stuy’s first 12”, ‘Back To Africa’, Bukkha was inspired to create something with a similar traditional steppers style. He sent the project to Madplate Sound (a young duo who have released on Moonshine and worked with Italian vocalist Marina P) and together they crafted the ‘Obliterate’ riddim, a deep and meditative track featuring earth-shattering bass and militant snares. Brother Culture then added lyrics that reflect on history and call on listeners to obliterate evil, chase away doubt, and take a proud and strengthening stance. The song is delivered in a classic three-part format with original vocal, vocal dub, and instrumental dub. On the flip side, UK producer Vibronics - who connected with Dub-Stuy after they shared a bill in France - delivers ‘Obliterated Version’, his own three-part reinterpretation of the original, expanding the track further with additional instrumental layers and rousing melodies while keeping the bass pressure high.‘Obliterate’ is a spiritual yet dancefloor-minded 12” that sets the tone for 2017.

Crucial heavyweights Poldoore and Emapea each take on a side of this Cold Busted 7-inch single, the latest in a bi-monthly series of Dub / Reggae cuts exhumed from the label’s golden vault. Belgium’s Poldoore commandeers the A-side with an instrumental version of ”This Road“, a track originally found on his acclaimed 2016 album “The Day After”. Stirringly dubwise, the cut is wet with atmosphere and the ping of spring reverb, as a tuneful horn section carries the main melody. Flip the wax for accomplished Polish beat-maker Emapea and his delightfully skankin’ ”Rudeboy“. Previously appearing on the In Dub 3 compilation, “Rudeboy" showcases Emapea’s knack for combining samples from multiple genres into one cohesive, steamy gumbo. With either track, B-boys and natty dreads alike will give the dance floor a serious workout as the needle meets the vinyl.

On the A side a superb version of "Man Next Door". The song has been originally recorded by John Holt with his group The Paragons in 1968 on Duke Reid's Duke label and since then it has been covered by numerous other reggae artists including Dennis Brown, UB40 and Horace Andy, becoming a massive hit thanks to Andy's more recent version with trip-hop superstars Massive Attack in their album “Mezzazine”. On the flip side you'll find the rock steady scorcher “Austerity Skank” that has already gained support on the airwaves by reagge ambassadords David Rodigan and Don Letts. In their first 10 years Pama Int'l recorded 9 albums, 3 BBCRadio 1 Maida Vale sessions, won the Rebel playlist on BBC6, and became the first new act to sign to Trojan Records in 30 years. Their collective nature saw them work with members of The Specials, Madness, Steel Pulse, Style Council, Galliano, Kasabian, Mad Professor, Toots & The Maytals, Jimmy Cliff to name a few.

Keith Rowe and Phillip Tex Dixon, both originally from Kingston, were introduced by a common friend and soon formed a singing group which contained three other friends singing everywhere possible, trying to get the chance to record fresh material. They auditioned for the most important producers at the time in Jamaica like Duke Reid, Prince Buster and Coxsone Dodd, but were not successful as a five-man group, so the group disbanded leaving the duo Keith and Tex.Keith served in the US Army, while Tex worked for the Canadian Government. Keith continued playing the New York scene and also recorded a classic song with Lee “Scratch” Perry titled Groovy Situation. In 1994 they re-joined to play some gigs and to complete an album titled Together Again. Here is what Peter Austin wrote about Sir Harry: "Sir Harry was a likely guy. He did a little gardening for a living. But he loved reggae music and especially the Clarendonians and Hugh Roy the toaster/dj very much, so he tried dj-ing as he was always in and around the studios. He would beg to do certain dj music for producers whom i believe never paid in very much if any at all, he was as I remember him, a very friendly person. He would come to my home and ask to do the gardening which he did and i would pay him. We later became good friends. I even did about two songs with him, the first one was "Hiccup" for Bunny Lee. He later got hard of hearing so it was difficult to record with him as the engineers would have to turn up the hear phone very high for him to hear the rhythm and this distorted the songs. I did one song with him during this period, it was so badly distorted, he could not put it out, it was his own production. In the end he met a horrible death. He was murdered, to this day I haven heard if or where he was buried. May his soul rest in peace (TEARS).and may god perpetual light shine on him, amen."

Toots & The Maytals' long and storied musical career spans all the way back to the dawn of ska. The group are not only key figures in the development reggae, they were among the first to utilize the word in a song title which lead to the popularization of the very term reggae. In The Dark is the group’s second internationally released full length, the follow up to Funky Kingston. Like Funky Kingston, this release is in the pantheon of the greatest reggae albums of all time. Sure, that’s not an official list, but you know it when you hear it. In addition to stand out cuts like the James Brown influenced “54-46 Was My Number” that had previously been issued as singles the group recorded all new material at Dynamic Sounds Studios in Kingston. One of those cuts is perhaps the most unique reggae covers of an American hit record. Reggae already had a storied history of Jamaican artist covering American R&B hits. But Toots & The Maytals went where others hadn’t with a cover of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” If you’re only familiar with the original, well let’s just say Toots Hibbert’s beyond soulful vocals may make you forget you ever heard that other version of the song. Reissued in a lovingly re-printed version of the original LP sleeve, Get On Down now presents a superb reissue of a legendary piece of music history.

LP | 1979 | EU | Reissue (Radiation Roots)

Release:1979 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Reggae / Dancehall
Tenor singer Johnny Clarke had many false starts in his youthful days. Hanging around Studio One as a schoolboy with Jacob Miller, Clarke was supposed to record material written for him by Bob Andy, but somehow never made the grade. His 1973 debut recording for lesser-known producer Glen Stair was not released, and early work for Clancy Eccles failed to hit, though ‘Everyday Wondering’ for Rupie Edwards made an underground impact in Britain and New York. Subsequent singles for Keith Hudson and Glen Brown also did not get very far, but the breakthrough finally came when Bunny Lee asked him to sing ‘None Shall Escape The Judgement,’ which was written by the singer Earl Zero; it became a massive hit that launched the ‘flying cymbal’ craze (based on an open-and-closed high-hat cymbal pattern, adapted from the Soul Train theme), and Clarke became one of Lee’s most reliable hit-makers, partly because Lee stoked a rivalry between him and Cornell Campbell, whom Lee had previously asked to voice ‘None Shall Escape.’ Clarke’s Satisfaction LP was recorded at Harry J for Lee, voiced at King Tubby’s studio, and issued by Third World in 1979. It is a set largely comprised of cover tunes, such as the strong opening update of the Paragons’ ‘Riding For A Fall,’ the title track adapting their rock steady hit ‘My Satisfaction’ in a post-rockers style. Better still is the hard-hitting ‘reality’ tune, ‘Play Fool, Get Wise,’ which uses a proverb to relate a means of avoiding trouble on the dog-eat-dog mean streets of Kingston.
Derrick Morgan - People Decision

LP | 1977 | EU | Reissue (Radiation Roots)

Release:1977 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Reggae / Dancehall
One of the very first artists to begin recording in Jamaica, Derrick Morgan is beloved as a ska icon and a pioneer of the ‘skinhead reggae’ style. Blessed with a rich, deep tenor, which with he belts out his clever and often humorous lyrics, Morgan became known on the Kingston music scene through Vere Johns’ regular talent contests, and enjoyed a lengthy run of hits during the 1960s for producers such as Simeon Smith, Duke Reid and Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd (among others), cultivating a popular vinyl feud with Prince Buster after being brought into Leslie Kong’s camp by the young Jimmy Cliff. Morgan moved to England during the late 1960s to capitalise on the skinhead reggae craze, but was back in Jamaica from the early 1970s, and since Bunny Lee was his brother-in-law, the two have always maintained a close working relationship. People Decision, voiced at King Tubby’s studio for Lee and released by Third World in 1977, sees Morgan in politicised roots reggae mode on songs like ‘Let’s Build A Better Jamaica,’ the symbolic racetrack drama ‘Racing At Ballistic Park,’ and the title track, which all boosted the socialist policies of the ruling People’s National Party; ‘Natty Dread Forward Out Of Babylon’ updates the ‘Tougher Than Tough’ saga, and there’s a slew of rude tunes when you flip the disc, including ‘My Dickie,’ ‘Rough Grinder’ and ‘Ride Manny Fanny.’

Mystica Tribe is the musical alias of Tokyo-based producer, Taka Noda. Drawing on a wide range of influences from dub, soul, bass music, rhythm and blues Mystica Tribe has quickly been developing a very distinctive sound that exists in a weird, freaked out zone between dub and techno. Noda is especially interested in deep, psychedelic music, and this is reflected in his productions, which are equally suited for late night listening sessions or bent, broken in dancefloors. His first track, Meditation Stick, was released in 2011 on Dutch label SD Records, backed by two remixes from label owners Syncom Data. This was followed by two more EPs on SD Records in 2013: Stars are Mine and Flowers. Artists like Gilles Peterson and 2562 have supported these well-received releases, and his track. His Temple recently appeared on Pangaea's Fabric Live 73 mix CD. In 2014, Noda is launching his own label, Mystica Tribe Records, through which he plans to continue developing his uniquely psychedelic take on dub and techno. His recent EP, "Lizard", was released on his label in 2014. "Jade Eye EP" was released on his label in 2016.

The album classic was originally issued in 1977 in Jamaica only and 20 years later in 1997 released by the Blood & Fire label as the outstanding but now deleted "Heart Of The Congos". VP Records' sub-label 17 North Parade release now the definitive 2017 re-mastered 3CD / 3LP deluxe edition put together with both respect and gratitude to that illustrious antecedent. This new 3 disc-set and 3LP-Vinyl-set is the first to feature the now almost impossible to find, original mix of the album, unavailable since producer Lee Perry withdrew the set in 1977 following the refusal of Chris Blackwell's Island Records team to licence the album (Disc 3), together with the more well-known mix, dubs, disco mixes, seven and twelve inch versions and "Don’t Blame It On I" an overlooked previously unreleased track unearthed (Disc 2) and the 'Blood & Fire' Kevin Metcalfe master (Disc 1).

Distinctive tenor singer Linval Thompson honed his singing craft in his formative years, growing in the west Kingston ghetto of Three Mile, where he was associated with Dennis Brown, Johnnie Clarke and Al Campbell. A subsequent move to New York brought him into expatriate act Hugh Hendricks and the Buccaneers, with his debut recording, ‘No Other Woman,’ being made circa early 1974 at Patrick Alley’s Art Craft studio. A series of other singles followed from his New York sojourn, but the return to Jamaica in 1974 led to more noteworthy singles for Stamma Hobson, Phil Pratt and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, with ‘Jah Jah Redder Than Red’ and ‘Girl You’ve Got to Run,’ both cut at the Black Ark for Pratt, being the most successful. Yet, it was all but a prelude to the breakthrough success he would finally achieve upon teaming up with Bunny Lee for ‘Don’t Cut Off Your Dreadlocks,’ one of the most popular releases of 1975; a debut album of the same name, issued by Third World in 1976, contained some of his most outstanding material, including the devotional ‘Jah Jah The Conqueror’ and ‘Long Long Dreadlocks,’ the romance thriller ‘Black Princess Lady’ and the anti-rude boy opus, ‘Cool Down Your Temper.’
