Precious, timely, moody reflections on migrating from Côte d’Ivoire to Moss, in Norway, over ruff breakbeat funk supplied by the nimble bass-playing of Maimouna’s old man (from Kambo Super Sound), and the expert conga and kit-drumming of Stliletti-Ana (from Jesse, in Helsinki). Even in their delirium, b-boys and girls will savour traces of the Incredible Bongo Band, in the chorus. Over the eight minutes, and going deeper on the flip, the mix lifts off into a cosmic steppers dub, featuring Gilb-r alongside Sotofett on keyboards, with no let up for the dancefloor in energy and vibes. In beautifully letter-pressed, poly-lined sleeves.“It was in 2001 / I got the letter / A letter that said / I would travel to a cold world / Not knowing what would happen / I was full of loneliness / No country / Everyone was different / Not only skin colour / The way people spoke / The way people behaved / That’s the adventure / Obey / This is the story we’re told / The key to success / So we can do everything for our parents / Who need us / Desperate for a better life / That’s the adventure

Three murderous steppers dubs on a propulsive, rat-tat-tat rhythm, combining mystical spaciousness with detail and ferocity. Angry-lion bass and smears of brass, fusillades and explosions, scares and shocks, oriental pentatonics, clattering percussion and synthy transcendence… the business. The second mix is nastiest; the third is the wildest and most discombobulated (and our favourite).Letter-pressed, poly-lined sleeves.

ZamZam 67 sees the eagerly-awaited return of the man called Versa (AKA Michael Nickless AKA Michael Versa). Over 10 years deep in the dub game, Versa came to prominence through a string of mesmerizing releases, notably a pair of singles on VIVEK’s System label. His first outing on ZamZam (alongside partner Rowl on the B side) went down a treat worldwide - hard to believe it was fully two dozen ZamZams ago! It’s always a special kind of pleasure to have an artist back for a second chapter, and this one is a must. “Seed” opens with the sound of distant thunder, minimal pads, and a time-honored bass & kick combination, elemental steppers for the ages making no concessions to fashion or trend. Melodica drives through the storm, with delicately plucked guitar and FX bubbling to the surface in a reverb-soaked landscape. Much more than the sum of its parts, “Seed"’s power is in its restraint, its knowledge of its roots, and its confidence in the timeless quality of well-tuned instruments and careful dub mixing. “Planting” inches the tempo up yet feels much slower, lulling us into a hazy world of lurching half-time magic, with all the same instrumentation in dynamic play, yet creating wildly contrasting results. With chasms of reverb, smeared snares and guitar taking a much greater role in the shimmering dubwise play of absence and presence, dappled light and twilight dark, “Planting” will pitch up nicely for an unforgettable appearance in a next 140 set. Versa’s deep knowledge of dub and reggae, along with his masterful approaches to techno and deep bass music more generally, makes every release a powerful yet understated event for sound system addicts. Mastered by Sam at Precise.

One per customer only!Born Marian Himburg, Causa has been on the rise for several years now, with a tight and impressive discography on labels including Crucial Recordings, Infernal Sounds, and J:Kenzo’s Artikal Music UK. Known for carefully focused cuts that marry dub sensibilities with dubstep weight, his debut for ZamZam is exactly what you’d hope: heavy 140 wares for deep dances. “Space Dub” is an orbiting station of decaying delays and insistent bleeps that resolve into an absolutely massive riddim that causes pure murderation on the floor. Machine sounds and lasers spar over dread, lurching bass, while thick snares cut through the reverb haze to reveal the cold, starry cosmos beyond. “Concrete Dub” works with a similarly industrial sound palette in the service of a minimalist, skanking steppers that drives hard into the heart of sound system. Disembodied voices, growling-deep horn stabs, a single piercing flute note, and a myriad of other sonic signifiers emerge and retreat, as if being pulled under by the unrelenting force of the primordial sub & kick attack. You’ve been warned!

One per customer only!J:Kenzo is a certified don of contemporary sound system music, whether dubwise or otherwise, 140 to 160 and beyond. Kenzo is a highly respected label head (Artikal Music UK & Lion Charge Records), heavyweight producer, master disc jockey and host of one of the most passionately-followed radio shows in all of dubstep on Rinse.fm. Needless to say we are thrilled to build with him once again. Absolute control over sound design, timing, tension and dynamics mark all of Kenzo’s productions, and the pair he delivered for his second ZamZam are no exception. Where his first release was a more meditative affair, “Kingston Hot” and “Concrete Jungle” both revel in a harder, darker vibe. "Kingston Hot” enters rocking a sleigh bell riddim and builds quickly into a stormer that has been pummeling crowds worldwide on dubplate with support from the likes of J.Sparrow, Mala, and Headland to name just a few. At once spacey, sultry, heady, and menacing it’s both eyes-down and hands-in-the-air material, all bass weight and reverb space, with every flick of the wrist in the mix another reason to recognize that the man’s stature in the world of bass music is well-earned. Concrete Jungle’s thinned intro kick, spare hand drums, and paranoid minimalist melody set the stage for a hard 140 stepper composed of a sidewinding, distorted bassline, smeared snares and panned percussion that drives deep into primal sound system territory. Frequent sparring partner in the live arena Sun of Selah makes a guest appearance on the mic with a single dread declamation that perfectly captures the tone of the tune, a gritty vibe that feels like swaggering through a near-future urban wasteland on the way to a dance that may not be much safer than the streets.

Cultures of Soul is very excited to announce this killer tropical reggae cover of Sade's Smooth Operator. Recorded at Circle Sound Studios in Miami the backing track was recorded by members of the famous reggae outfit Inner Circle with vocals by local area rising star at the time, Sabrina Rich. Sabrina (her real name is actually Sabrena) had been making records in her and her ex-husband's studio in their garage for years. The result of which was the disco 12" Exit/Whispering. Around this time Sabrina was performing in the Palm Beach / Boca Raton area of Florida and performed with Jimmy Bo Horne. Some time after Sabrina worked with a man named Kenneth Corey who mastered her recordings. Kenneth referred her to Roger and Ian Lewis of Inner Circle to help press up their vinyl. They became friends and around 1985 recorded Smooth Operator. During this time they were working and partying hard and experimenting with different ideas and sounds. The track was originally released in small numbers as sort of a demo and never really took off. Shortly after Inner Circle went on tour in Europe and the single went into obscurity until many years later when copies of the record turned up in New York and Toronto. This 12" includes a special discomix edit by Duckcomb a.k.a. Patrick Billard, DJ and record collector extraordinaire.

Genre:Reggae / Dancehall
Soul Jazz Records are releasing this first ever collection of the pioneering British reggae Lovers Rock group Brown Sugar including rare singles, dubs and extended mixes. The album comes with extensive sleevenotes and interviews with Dennis Bovell, Pauline Catlin, John Kpiaye and Winston Edwards (Studio 16).Brown Sugar were formed by three young teenage girls – Pauline Catlin, Caron Wheeler and Carol Simms in South London in 1976. In the short period of time 1976-1980, the group – working with Dennis Bovell on the mixing desk and John Kpiaye (‘Brownie T) in the studio – recorded barely a handful of singles on the new Lovers Rock label, a number of which went to the top of the UK reggae charts. But success stopped there, and with no album release and no industry support the group broke up in the early 1980s.Following their split Caron Wheeler became the lead vocalist for the hugely successful group Soul II Soul, Carol Simms launched a solo career as Kofi (re-making a number of Brown Sugar songs with producer Mad Professor) and Pauline Catlin returned to education.Despite their relatively low-key mainstream public exposure Brown Sugar (and the label on which their first records appeared) announced to the world a new genre of reggae music, Lovers Rock, which spoke for the first time with the sensibility of a new segment of British society; that of first generation-born Black British female youth. And while Lovers Rock became synonymous with sweet love songs, Brown Sugar’s music in fact expressed far more; a righteous pride and consciousness in being Black and British, a political stance more often associated with UK roots groups like Black Slate, Aswad, Misty in Roots and other British reggae acts in the late 1970s. Brown Sugar were in fact their own genre of ‘conscious lovers rock’ – an expression of ideological black cultural pride. Brown Sugar’s handful of three-minute love songs (often plus extended dubs) somehow manage to encapsulate all the complexities of identity, sexual politics and youthful righteousness of Afro-Caribbean youth living in Britain in the 1970s. Songs such as ‘I’m in Love with A Dreadlocks’, ‘Our Reggae Music’, ‘Black Pride’ and ‘Dreaming of Zion’ spoke with a straightforward righteousness and consciousness that few roots groups could hope to match. The fact that they were all teenagers is even more striking. In the mid-70s British reggae came into being as first generation Black Britain was able to find a voice able to express the issues of growing up British with Caribbean roots. This came about in two different ways – the British roots music of (essentially male) groups such as Aswad, Steel Pulse and Black Slate – and Lovers Rock, the expression of a black essentially (but not totally) female consciousness – Brown Sugar, Louisa Mark, 15-16-17, Marie Pierre, Janet Kay, Carroll Thompson, Jean Adebambo and others. And significantly, while British roots music was a variant on a Jamaican style, Lovers Rock was uniquely British – the first authentic British reggae sound. Dennis Bovell comments, “For Lovers Rock we needed a pulpit, a way of saying ‘this is the style’. Sound systems were already saying ‘this is lovers,’ brandishing it in the dance. Our intention was to create a style of music that my generation could identify with – one that had a beat, and you could dance to with your partner in a sound system setting.” Dennis Bovell’s mixes for the group gave a further dimension to Brown Sugar records – a sound system mentality, adding sound effects and dub elements. ‘I’m in Love with A Dreadlocks’ was the debut release for both Brown Sugar and the Lovers Rock label, a fitting calling card for both. The record was a hit on many sound systems across the UK, reaching the top of the reggae charts. John Kpiaye: “They never put out an album. And all these records were seven-inch singles; when 12-inches turned up it just killed the seven-inch.”Although the career of Brown Sugar was short-lived, their legacy and influence remains significant and now, 40 years on from these first records, all of the members are still involved in music. Pauline Catlin has recently re-launched her career under a new moniker, Shezekiel; Carol Simms, aka Kofi, remains a successful solo artist, one of the queens of Lovers Rock; Caron Wheeler, after leaving Soul II Soul at the end of the 1980s, embarked on a solo career, before re-joining the soul super-group which she continues to front to this day. This new collection brings together all the groups essential recordings for the first ever time.

Release:1970 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Reggae / Dancehall
Easily one of the greatest roots reggae albums of all time, Soul Rebels resulted from the intensive partnership brokered by the group and maverick producer, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. It was the first Wailers ‘concept’ album, conceived as a long-player based on a rebellious theme, rather than a collection of isolated singles, and the presence of the Barrett Brothers in the rhythm section pointed the way for greater glories to come. The Wailers first formed as an unruly 5-piece in 1963, with Junior Braithwaite as lead singer and Beverley Kelso an early member, sometimes replaced by Cherry Green. During their long tenure at Studio One, Bob Marley gradually shifted to the lead vocal role and the robust core of Marley, Peter Tosh and Neville Livingston, aka Bunny Wailer, soon emerged as the mainstays of the group. Perry was involved with the Wailers at Studio One, using their talents for backing vocals on some of his solo work, but the partnership that yielded Soul Rebels was in an entirely different league. The title track, Tosh’s anguished “400 Years and “Corner Stone” are legendary for their intense power; “It’s Alright” set the template for the later “Night Shift,” “My Cup” was an individual barebones reading of James Brown’s “I Guess I’ll Have To Cry Cry Cry,” while the playful “Try Me” and “No Water” are suggestive odes. Tosh’s dejected “No Sympathy” and the spirited “Soul Almighty” are other winners and the “Cloud 9” revamp “Rebel’s Hop” is another joy. All killer, no filler!

Long-out-of-print re-release of this classic Sugar Minott album on Soul Jazz Records, bringing together the best of his classic material recorded at Studio One in the 1970s.Lincoln Sugar Minott was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1956. He grew up in a poor area ofWest Kingston and from an early age developed a love of Reggae music and the music ofStudio One in particular. As a teenager, he became selector for Sound of Silence Keystoneand Gathering of Youth local sound-systems. By the late 1970s Minott had risen tobecome one of the biggest stars in Jamaican music.Sugar Minott began his career at Studio One. After auditioning in front of Clement ‘SirCoxsone’ Dodd in the early 1970s, he became the first artist to record new songs overclassic rhythms, singing over original Studio One tapes – the significance of which leddirectly to the birth of dancehall, as Channel One, Joe Gibbs and hundreds of otherJamaican producers quickly began releasing their own material based on these sameclassic Studio One rhythms replayed by Sly and Robbie, The Aggrovators, Soul Syndicate,Roots Radics and many others.“I knew Studio One spiritually before I knew Studio One physically. You know I grew upbeside a dancehall and Sir Coxsone’s sound used to play there from when I was a boy. Sofrom that influence you know I used to love Studio One sound so much, I became a soundselector. So that was my first involvement with getting to know Studio One music like TheHeptones, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, the whole works and that was my life from a youth.”After Sugar Minott’s debut many other artists followed suit at the label such as FreddieMcGregor, Johnny Osbourne, Lone Ranger and Michigan & Smiley leading to one of themost creative periods for the label. This is the first retrospective of Sugar Minott at thelabel and most of these recordings have never been widely available outside Jamaica.Sugar Minott went on to a huge career in Reggae and is today one of the biggest stars inJamaican music. He set up his own Black Roots/Youth Promotions label releasing music byBarry Brown, Michael Palmer, Tenor Saw, Barrington Levy, Horace Andy, Garnett Silk,Junior Delgado, Yami Bolo, Junior Reid and many more.Sugar Minott went on to work for numerous Jamaican producers. His ‘Good Thing Going’produced by Donovan Germain became a number one hit in the UK and led to the rise ofLovers Rock. This album includes classic cuts as well as super-rare singles only recordings, all of which have been digitally re-mastered for this release.

This is the second installment of deep roots Rastafarian reggae at Studio One and features classic music from some of the most important figures in reggae music – Alton Ellis, The Heptones, Jackie Mittoo, The Gladiators – alongside a host of rarities and little-known recordings, such as a truly rare Mystic Revelation of Rastafari seven-inch single, Willie William’s first ever recording ‘Calling’ and Horace Andy’s righteous (and equally rare) masterpiece ‘Illiteracy.’Black Man’s Pride 2 extends the legacy of Studio One’s ground-breaking path in roots reggae which began at the end of the 1960s and continued throughout the 1970s. The album tells the story of how the rise of Studio One Records and the Rastafari movement were interconnected, through the adoption of the Rastafari faith by key reggae artists – everyone from the Skatalites and Wailers in the 1960s, major singers such as Alton Ellis and Horace Andy at the end of the decade, through to major roots artists such as The Gladiators in the 1970s – and how Clement Dodd consistently recorded this heavyweight roots music throughout Studio One’s history. The sleeve-notes to this album also discuss the links between Rastafari and Studio One in time and place, noting how both the religion and Clement Dodd’s musical empire had their roots in the intense period of pre-independence Jamaica in Kingston, expanded in the 1960s following the visit of Haile Selassie in 1966, and how roots music then came to dominate reggae music in the early 1970s. Also discussed is how the outsider stance of both reggae music and the Rastafari movement relate back many hundreds of years to the original rebel stance of the Maroons, escaped slaves who set up self-sufficient enclaves in the hills of the Jamaican countryside.

This is the latest new installment of Soul Jazz Records’ on-going collection of Rastafarian music at Studio One, featuring classic material from legendary roots and culture artists The Gladiators, Horace Andy, Freddie McGregor, Sugar Minott and the Wailing Souls, alongside a superb selection of rarities from Sir Coxsone’s musical empire made up of one-off and practically unknown Rastafarian artists who recorded on a myriad of Studio One off-shoot labels in the 1970s – The Manchesters, Mellodies, The Nightingales and others. In this new collection, we see that once again the prescient Clement Dodd was a man who saw the wider picture. In the 1960s it was Sir Coxsone who identified the creative potential of The Wailers, Toots and the Maytals, Heptones, Burning Spear and many, many others. In the 1970s Studio One released an untouchable selection of the finest as styles moved from reggae to deejay to dub and, in the latter half, the emergence of dancehall. But what is also clear is that throughout this era Studio One released an incredible amount of roots music, and not just the most commercially obvious. For alongside the career-building catalogues of Burning Spear, The Wailing Souls, The Gladiators and so on, one needs to be an ardent Studio One collector to know some of the truly raw Rastafarian music featured here. Groups such as The Manchesters or The Nightingales feel as if they were recorded straight out of the churchical chants of the mansions.Black Man’s Pride explains the links between the ideology of Clement Dodd at Studio One and the Rastafarian faith, which was the creation of Afro-Jamaicans and concerned above all else with a black consciousness and empowerment, a rediscovering of the personal and racial identity of black people. The movement began in the 1930s and, in tandem with this black consciousness, called for a rejection of the British imperial culture that dominated Jamaica, while creating an identity based on a re-appropriation of an African heritage. The Rastafari movement was like a pivot, bringing together and balancing many vectors of ideologies. Marcus Garvey’s Back to Africa movement, trades union discourse, anti-colonialism and nation independence, maroon self-definition and independence, the spirit of African rebellion in the Caribbean. For Clement Dodd, a black man and producer growing up in Kingston in this era, Rastafari was simply a part of his everyday world – from witnessing Count Ossie’s grounations to the faith of many Jamaican artists at Studio One – from the Skatalites onwards.Featured here alongside these classic and rare tracks from Studio One are new and extensive sleeve notes with track-by-track notes by Rob Chapman, author of the acclaimed Downbeat Special and Never Grow Old Studio One books.

Hopeton Brown, better known as Scientist, has been a pioneering figure in the world of dub for 40 years. His early love of electronics proved fruitful when (still a teenager) he was hired at King Tubby’s studio in Kingston. Brown quickly ascended the ranks and became heir to Tubby’s throne, producing imaginative and technically impressive mixes that solidified his forward-looking nickname. Originally released in 1981, In The Kingdom Of Dub remains one of the best early LPs in Scientist’s long career. Produced by Roy Cousins at Channel One and featuring Sly & Robbie along with members of The Revolutionaries, The Aggrovators and The Soul Syndicate, the album offers a wide range of arresting rhythms, bold effect drops and exquisitely melodic bass. From “18 Drumalie Avenue Dub” (a reference to King Tubby’s address) to “Burning Sun Dub,” Scientist lays down a veritable roadmap of dub —filled with disintegrating echoes of satiny organ and textural guitar—firmly cementing his place as one of the true innovators in Jamaican popular music.

Jr. Thomas & The Volcanos’ sophomore effort Rockstone is more than just a love letter to the roots of Jamaican music. It’s an actual love letter. Tom McDowall aka Jr. Thomas explains, “I could write a musical love letter to all things I loved: my wife, my family, my friends, my band mates. I could write a song to tell me to Chin Up when times got tough. I could give gratitude to the Jamaican artists that paved the way for the beautiful music we now call reggae. I could write a song about what it’s like to lose someone important to you. Or write a song to invigorate me spiritually. Music is healing and that’s the best therapy there is for me.”Rockstone isn’t just another throwback record to an era gone by. It’s a record that takes risks within the genre, but more importantly it’s a genuinely honest record.“I called the album Rockstone because true love cannot be defeated. It lives forever. We write tributes on our tombstones because they live on beyond our lives as a remembrance of something special and important to us.” Recommend for fans of: The Frightnrs, Toots & The Maytals, Jimmy Cliff

7 inch singles were instrumental to the development of the Jamaican music industry, more affordable than full lengths for the consumer, they also allowed the labels to turnaround what was being recorded into music played from their booming sound systems as quickly as possible. In that spirit, Get On Down will be reissuing some of the most crucial reggae and ska sides on 45.This issue marks a slight departure in the series as Symarip were not a Jamaican group but had their origins in the UK. By the time Skinhead Moonstomp was released as a single in 1969, reggae had spread its influence into the UK to such an extent that it changed British music for good. Symarip were the first group to work to directly appeal to UK skinhead culture, creating the climate that allowed for the explosion of the two tone movement in the late1970s. Yet it was only on the singles’ reissue in 1980 that the cut hit the UK charts, landing at #54. So, to paraphrase the song’s intro, get up on your feet, put your braces together and your boots on your feet, it’s time again for some of that old moonstompin’.”

Black Uhuru first formed in 1972, initially as Uhuru (Swahili for 'freedom'). Over the years the group has undergone several line-up changes with Derrick "Duckie" Simpson as the mainstay. As a unique singer in his own right, Delroy "Junior" Reid had the opportunity to reach a wider international audience when he was offered the chance to be the lead singer in Black Uhuru in 1986. Jr. Reid was from the same area of Kingston, shared a similar vocal style and already had a reputation for writing strong reality lyrics. After joining the group, Jr. Reid elevated the group to another level delivering militant songs such as Let Us Pray and Dread In The Mountain. Songs as these taken from the "Brutal" sessions, sung over typically robust rhythms from Sly & Robbie, tailored to fit in with developments on the international scene whilst upholding Black Uhuru’s penchant for uncompromising roots music with the emphasis on tight, forward-thinking arrangements.

Hey-O-Hansen is a dub duo from Berlin. Helmut Erler and Michael Wolf are originally from Austria; their blend of folkloristic melodies from their home country with the bass-loaded echo chambers of Jamaican roots has been called Austrodub. In 2010, Pingipung put together a compilation called “Rare and Unreleased Austrodub Tracks” to express our love for the oeuvre of the duo. They have been pushing buttons in the Berlin underground scene since the year 2000, Helmut Erler being a mastering engineer at internationally renowned Dubplates & Mastering. “Die Sonn und Der Mond” was the exclusive unreleased track composed for the occasion of this digital compilation. It is now available on vinyl for the first time, reworked, mastered and cut by Helmut Erler into this 2018 version. Kazumi sings the vocals for the track, and her Japanese accent in the lullaby adds to the psychedelic vibe of this wonderful hit. On the B side edit, Helmut does the singing, in his Austrian tongue with a vocoder and his acoustic guitar. This single is a part of Pingipung’s ongoing Concentrical Series of 7’’ records. Previous contributions include Umeko Ando, Andi Otto, Ya Tosiba and Ion Din Dorobanti.

Fresh from releases on Artikal Music, Navy Cut, Modern Hypnosis, and Green King Cuts, Melbourne-based badman Alex Dickson AKA Pugilist delivers a study in contrast for ZamZam 66, with two choice cuts, “Roll Off” and “Hemisphere.” A-Side “Roll Off” calls all dancers to the floor with a massive dubwise take on dark garage, often imagined in fever dreams of bass madness but seldom heard in real life. 808 bass propels distorted kicks and slapping snares through rifts of reverb & space torn open by the relentless percussion. Call it bruk-techno, 130-jungle, ruffneck-raggabreaks or whatever you like, “Roll Off” will have the floor shocking out and demanding a pull-up. A depth charge of dubness, B-side “Hemisphere” goes two miles straight down, as a minimalist cycling bass figure pulls us deeper and deeper, martial drum fills and ricocheting high hats like gaseous bubbles rising from deep-sea vents where no light can penetrate. Lonely stabs and lasers pierce the darkness intermittently, only to be swallowed again by the void. This is subtly swaggering dub techno mapping a desolate but beautiful landscape. Sounds from the Well indeed. Mastered by Sam at Precise.

Maxie Livingston Smith became Max Romeo through his concerted courtship of a local beauty. After a difficult childhood that saw him run away from home following the breakdown of his parents’ relationship, Max became lead singer of The Emotions harmony group, with Lloyd Shakespeare, brother of future bass wizard Robbie, during the rock steady era. Following the demise of the group, in 1968, at the request of Bunny Lee, Max wrote the suggestive “Wet Dream”, inspired by the rude ditties of the lewd American r&b singer, Blowfly, but then found himself forced to sing it in the studio after rejections from better-established peers such as Slim Smith, Derrick Morgan, Roy Shirley and John Holt. Despite a BBC ban, the song topped the British charts, spawning the debut album, A Dream. Tracks like “Wood Under Cellar,” “Wine Her Goosie” and “The Horn” continued the rude theme, though songs such as “Far Far Away” and “Love” were more traditional ballads, the latter made more outstanding through vibrant Rastafari-influenced percussion; “Club Raid” speaks of Max’s survival of a punitive police bust.

One of the greatest reggae vocal harmony trios of all time, The Mighty Diamonds formed in 1969 in Trench Town, the infamous west Kingston ghetto that gave rise to Bob Marley and the Wailers and countless other vocal groups. They began recording for Rupie Edwards in the early 1970s and cut soul covers for Stranger Cole and lesser-known producer, Roy Ross, before singing noteworthy material for Lee “Scratch” Perry, such as “Talk About It,” as well as backing hit singles such as Susan Cadogan’s “Hurt So Good.” Subsequent material for Bunny Lee was also popular, but the real breakthrough came when the deejay and producer Jah Lloyd introduced the group to the Hookim Brothers of Channel One, leading to a series of incredible hits and internationally acclaimed albums issued overseas by Virgin. Then, in the 1980s, after Virgin turned away from reggae, The Diamonds had another career boost through recordings for perceptive producer Gussie Clarke, who issued popular albums such as Changes and The Root Is There. The album Backstage was another fine set for Gussie, recorded at Dynamic Sounds studio in Kingston and issued in extended-play style, with each of the album’s six conscious late-roots tracks mixed to include dubs.

Side A features the 6:28 minutes extended version of "Jah Love Is With I" and side B has the 5:52 minutes version of "Bad Days Are Going"!Among the ranks of singers, only Johnny Clarke comes close to challenging Bob Marley & Dennis Brown for reggae's crown, through his unequaled run of hit songs. His output of mid-70s classics powered by producer Bunny "Striker" Lee give Clarke status among the top artists of the period, and he mainstains contemporary relevance on the live show and reggae festival circuit.

Mastered by Sam at Precise. Deadbeat graced ZamZam with a release in our very first year of operation. Lending his name & gravitas to our young effort with ZamZam06 meant a lot to us at the time, and is something we never forgot, so we couldn’t be happier to have him back for a second outing. Canadian by birth, now residing in Berlin, Scott Monteith is known the world over as one of the most adventurous and reliable producers in the areas of techno and dub-inflected electronic music. Extremely tight quality control over multiple full length albums and countless singles on seminal labels including ~scape, Echochord, and his own flawless BLKRTZ have made him a household name in dub techno and beyond. Deadbeat’s second ZamZam sets aside obvious techno constraints for a mid-tempo reggae scorcher that sounds like it was beamed straight from the humid & heady glory days of the Black Ark studio. Anchored by a tar-thick bassline recalling Lee Perry’s “Dub Organizer,” “Wail Ball and Cry” leans hard into its rockstone drum kit, with whip-sharp turnarounds, clattering Binghi drums, melodica stabs and restrained yet ever-present flange and reverb keeping the atmosphere swampy and sparkling. A sweet falsetto intones on the loneliness and alienation we all navigate in these times of political debasement and (social) media spectacle.

We at ZamZam have long been fans of Schlachthofbronx’s genre-smashing club tracks that harness and hybridize bass music styles from Germany, UK, Jamaica, Mexico, Brazil, and beyond. But when we heard the dark dub of last year’s “Blurred Vision” we knew we had to reach out. Little did we know the duo was already into ZamZam, paving the way to an eagerly anticipated release championed on dubplate by selectors from The Bug to O.B.F. to Toddla T. The Munich pair's ZamZam pushes a sound that's intutive and familiar, yet unlike anything else out there. Schlachthofbronx have carved out an absolutely unique and steely-eyed take on punishing dubwise informed not only by post-punk, house, electro, industrial, and traditional dub reggae principles, but by the legendary 60,000 watt Elemental Wave rig they host their Blurred Vision night on. Some time around 20 years ago, the artist known as Dub Surgeon made an absorbing album of beautiful dub infused with ambiance, found sounds and horizontal rhythms. The Lost Future was recorded at the former Amsterdam Film Academy where Dub Surgeon. The recording engineer for the project was Ricardo Villalobos.Dub surgeon and Ricardo Villalobos then mastered it together, putting it through several vintage mixers and recording it to 2 inch tape. Then, tragedy struck: a storm surged and ignited a fire that ravaged the studio. The master copy was thought to have been lost forever.Dub Surgeon stopped making music and disappeared into the shadows after just two EPs on Future Dub in 2002/3. But one day 15 years later, totally out of the blue, he received a demo of The Lost Future. "Pay attention to this," it said.Attached was a demo version of the long lost album and now, finally, it has a perfect and impossibly poetic home on Dubai's Ark to Ashes, which is named in homage to the story of Lee "Scratch" Perry burning down his Black Ark studio to rid it of demons.Sounding as fresh as ever, The Lost Future is an authentic dub experience with a story as special as the music itself.

Jamaicanchanter Isha Bel is given a belly-battering bass blend by Aquarius. The A side closes with acontinuation of the Rasta theme. General Jah Mikey, channelling Burning Spear for his ownItes Green and Gold, rides a deft digital riff by bald-head New Zealand-based super-producerNaram. Danny T and Tradesman build an industrial-strength base for anti-violence lament UpDeh: a rare vocal outing from Iration Steppas' Mark Iration. Then it's time for Poland'sDreadsquad to ease the pressure with swinging onedrop vibraphone instrumental Space. JAmeets "Glasgae" for Feel Good, an uplifting collab between Jamaican singer Skari and Scottishproducer Escape Roots. Earl Sixteen, wraps his pipes around Joy Division's Love Will Tear UsApart, helmed hauntingly by Capitol 1212. Scotch Bonnet's own Thomas Stalawa getseveryone marching to a beat inspired by Steely and Clevie's Dem Bow, as dangerous Spanishemcee Ponchita Peligros demands all in attendance Run the Calypso. The album ends with arequest from un-categorisable Israeli collective Trillion featuring General G that pufferschoose wisely - via anti-cigarette missive No Nicotine

While Montego Bay natives Jackie Bernard, his brother Footy Bernard and cousin Lloyd Kerr recorded under various guises in the early ’60s, their collective arrival as The Kingstonians in 1967 marked a sea change not only in the vocal trio’s productivity and popularity, but also in the emerging Reggae sound. The Kingstonians made several chart-topping singles between 1968 and 1970, including the massive hit “Singer Man” whose success ultimately led to the release of their sole LP, Sufferer. Originally issued on Trojan, Sufferer collects a dozen of The Kingstonians’ best-known songs. Produced by Derrick Harriott, these truly boss sounds would pack dancehalls on the island as well as become the soundtrack for working-class youth across ’70s Britain. The title track remains a classic of the early Reggae era with impeccable arrangements, stuttering organ and soul-steeped lyrics. The Kingstonians’ shift away from Rocksteady modes is perhaps most apparent on the aforementioned “Singer Man”—an irresistible forward groove, prompting a deeper danceability that is rightly centered on real feeling. Antarctica Starts Here presents the first-time domestic release of Sufferer. Reproducing the original sleeve design, this reissue is part of an archival series that focuses on Trojan’s essential ’60s and ’70s catalogue. Liner notes by Laurence Cane-Honeysett.

Lowell Dunbar and Robert Shakespeare are the renowned Jamaican rhythm section that has worked with a range of international stars, including Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Joan Armatrading, Garland Jeffries and countless others. They first came to know each other in the early 1970s, when both were based in rival bands playing in clubs on Kingston’s Red Hills Road and started working together at Channel One studio in the mid-1970s, when Sly was musical arranger for the Revolutionaries house band and Robbie the main bassist for Bunny Lee’s Aggrovators. After a stint of international touring in Peter Tosh’s Word, Sound and Power band, which exposed them to the tastes and markets of overseas audiences, the pair joined forces more concertedly with their Taxi label, producing hits with Gregory Isaacs, Dennis Brown, Sugar Minott and the Wailing Souls. At the same time, as the driving force behind the Compass Point All Stars, they brought Grace Jones to prominence worldwide and made Gwen Guthrie a star through reggaefied disco, and then brought Black Uhuru into the top spot in the wake of Bob Marley’s passing. Then, when Jamaican music went digital with the “Sleng Teng” craze of the mid-1980s, Sly and Robbie made the shift in that direction too, becoming among the most prominent producers as the 80s gave way to the 90s. Dubs For Tubs: A Tribute To King Tubby is a digital dub salute to the King issued shortly after his terrible murder; it is mostly comprised of synthesizer re-cuts of classic Jamaican rhythms, with “Dub For Joy” being a tough re-working of the Heptones’ “Love Me Girl” and “Dub To Make You Move And Groove” a take on their “Party Time”; Dennis Brown’s “Here I Come” is here mutated to “Dub For Roots People” and his “Here I Come” anthem shifted into the spongy “Dub For All Seasons.” An intriguing offshoot of “Sleng Teng” is among the other highlights.

Jamaican trio Israel Vibration are one of Reggae's great vocal groups from the 1970s roots era. The trio re-formed in 1988, signed to the RAS label and set to work on a new album known as 'Strength Of My Life'. Produced by Doctor Dread and backed by the mighty force of the Roots Radics, the I-Vibes returned to form and found a new strength and power. The Radics perfectly complement their songs, laying down bass driven rhythms to create a masterful backdrop over which the harmonies conjure up a wide spectrum of moods. Featuring on this Limited 12" release is the crucial and perhaps more relevant to our current climate 'Middle East' plus 'Greedy Dog' with guest musician Augustus Pablo on melodica duties. Under licence and for the very first time ever with their Dub counterparts this release is one for the fans!

"Having remained continuously active since 1971, theYoruba Singers are the longest-running musical groupin Guyana. Emerging from a music scene mostlydominated by slick, commercial entertainment, theYoruba Singers brought a new dimension to Guyanapopular music, cooking up a potent stew of afrocentricvibes, steeped in a committed invocation of thecountry’s African heritage. The Yoruba Singers released several recordingsduring their imperial period in the nineteen seventiesand eighties, but what is broadly regarded as thegroup’s magnum opus is the 1981 album Fighting forSurvival. The album sums up the group’s first decadeof operation, serving up a heavy mix of calypso, jazzyfunk, reggae and afrobeat. Initially released on theshort-lived Interculture label and later reissued on aGuyana-only compact disk, the album has long beenmore talked about than actually heard. But thanksto Cultures of Soul a new edition is now availablein wide release, and with it comes the opportunityto experience some of the deepest grooves theCaribbean has to offer!"

The vocal was recorded in a dodgy motel room in Los Angeles using a Coca Cola bottle as a mic stand and mixed at the back of a tobacco shop in Melbourne. No bells, whistles nor bullshit - just raw digital dancehall.
