Special Edition 7-inch & Version from New York Is For Lovers!
Harken back to a glorious period in reggae, when lush, big room sounds and smooth, soulful vocals ruled from Jamaica to New York, across the pond in London and everywhere dances were held. Known as Lover's Rock, the style filled early '80s dancehalls and radio airwaves alike, a grown up sound that cherished love, explored heartbreak, and most importantly, updated and paid respect to the indomitable rhythms of Jamaican music that had previously laid the foundation decades prior. That transcendent period is at the heart of The Far East's latest recording, a true school ode to the sounds and vibes of reggae music in New York, what once was, and will always be.

Under the guidance of producer Channel Tubes in the studio since their inception, The Far East has built a formidable reputation around this still thriving New York scene. They've embraced many of the essential studio methodologies of the past, not so much as facsimile, but as an enhancement to their unique take on the genre. It's evident outside of the studio as well, as the group has entrenched themselves in the diverse stages of New York's music scene, adored by an audience both young and old, from Bushwick to The Bronx.

However, since then a combination of both scarcity and quality has transformed the single into one of the most sought-after records in the genre. Accompanied by a phenomenal dub version, this record easily deserves its space on record shelves across the world. With prices becoming ever exceedingly eye-watering and copies ever harder to find, Kalita come to the rescue, offering a loud and remastered 12" single for all.

Symarip began in the 1960s as The Bees, the UK’s first major 60's Reggae band then as The Pyramids, Symarip and Seven Letters. In 1971 they moved to Germany to perform Afro-rock music under the name Zubaba. Frank Pitter, Symarip's original drummer, recalls watching Keith Moon, The Who's drummer on TV around 1965/1966 and deciding " right then and there to become a drummer, to make a living as a musician”. The Bees included: Roy Ellis (Vocals, Trombone), Monty Neysmith (Hammond Organ & Keyboard), Frank Pitter (Drums), Micheal Thomas (Bass), Josh Roberts (Guitar), Roy Bug Knight (Saxophone), Johney Johnson (Trumpet), Carl Grifith (Tennor & Alto Sax). They all originated from the Jamaican community and quickly became the U.K. main supporting act for visiting Jamaican artists. They toured extensively across the UK, playing for Lauren Aitken, Prince Buster, Eddy Grant, Millie Small, Owen Gray, Jackie Edwards, Desmond Dekker, The Pioneers, The Ethiopians, The Maytals... to name a few. They signed with the label President under the name The Pyramids, with Eddy Grant writing and producing their first album and their first hit, Train Tour To Rainbow City in 1967. Despite their popularity, they got little support from their record label. This is then that Monty Neysmith came up with the idea of turning Pyramids into Symarip, hence allowing the band to sign with Trojan. Symarip recorded their first album under this name with Trojan in 1969. It featured among others "these Boots Are Made For Walking", “Skinhead Girl”, “Skinhead Jamboree” and “Skinhead Moonstomp”. "Moonstomp" was in fact a version of Derrick Morgan's 1969 "Moon Hop". Additionally, it featured a vocal introduction: "I want all you skinheads to get up on your feet/Put your braces together and your boots on your feet/And give me some of that old moonstomping" that was very similar to the Sam & Dave' "I Thank You” song introduction. Over the years “Skinhead Moonstomp” charted several times for Symarip and finally reached number 1 with The Specials in 1980. Although their songs were the first targeting the Skinhead audience, they have become mega anthems for the black and white communities in U.K. and around the world. And Symarip special brand of Reggae is also widely recognized to have greatly influenced the Two Tone bands of the early 80's. Today's Symarip songs are still incredibly popular. 50 years after their releases, the legend goes on!

Emotional Rescue and HMV Record Shop (Japan) team up to present six limited edition 7"s of Disco Reggae Lovers music. Featuring Sugar Minnott, Dambala, One Blood, 101 Band, Red Cloud and here to start, for the first time ever as a single, Ernest Ranglin's, cover of The Dramatics R&B classic, In The Rain. A defining guitarist and composer in the development of Jamaican music, Ranglin's career spanned mento to reggae, playing on the groundbreaking recording of My Boy Lollipop itself, before going on to work with the likes of the Skatalies, Jimmy Cliff and Bob Marley. Moving to Florida in 1982, he teamed up with Noel Williams to mix the bass heavy sound the producer was famous for with Ranglin's unique playing. Featuring a who's who of the Miami scene including Bobby Caldwell, Timmy Thomas, Betty Wright and Williams himself, In The Rain continued the link between R&B and reggae to sweet perfection. To accompany, for half this series, a modern producer offers their own remix. Here Nik Weston, DJ, promoter and owner of the respected Mukatsuku label, releasing afro, jazz dance and more and with a long standing association with Japan, presents here an instrumental dub - letting the groove roll and Ranglin's ubiquitous playing to shine.

Produced by Supermax-frontman Kurt Hauenstein. Originally released in 1987. We are proud to re-release this super rare 7” that proves, once and for all, that Austrians can excel at digi-dub. Timelessly tropical and beautifully bouncy, its vibe is quite different from the iconic Supermax productions. Here, Judy and Nicola’s sweet yet confident vocals replace the moustache-driven sotto voce singing that we love Supermax for. The result is oh-so-catchy and bound to be a hit.

Stix Records, a sub-label of Favorite Recordings, is back with some heavy dub cuts from label regular Mato. Starting his reggae production career in 2006, Thomas Blanchot aka Mato has released music through various projects on EDR Records, Big Singles or Makasound... In the meantime he developed a real trademark: taking over classics French, Hip-Hop, or Pop song, into roots reggae-dub new versions. Besides since 2010, Mato has built a solid reputation thanks to his hot remixes of Hip-Hop classics on Stix Records. Today, Mato is back with another target for his special skills as a tailor of reggae music, this time focusing on classic musical themes from R. Strauss’ "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and Herbie Hancock’s "Maiden Voyage ". It’s a great sensation to hear these melodies turned into superbly crafted Dub monsters. As Mato once said, "Play it loud and burn a chalice!"

When looking for classic soul cuts to revamp it was only a matter of time until Night Owls turned their attention to fellow Angeleno Shuggie Otis. This brand new 45 kicks off with a punch launching you straight into an irie dub infused version of Shuggie’s “Aht Uh Mi Hed” featuring Fishbone veteran John Arthur Bigham on lead vocals. Taking Otis’s lyrical poetry to new heights, Bigham delivers a performance that unearths the deep underbelly of the original while Night Owls fill a sonic landscape of whirling organs, skank guitar, heavy bass, and tingly dubbed out percussion to match. On Side-B we find a reggae-fied version of Gene Harris and The Three Sounds instrumental “Put On Train”which many from our generation know from The Beastie Boys’ “What Comes Around” from Paul’s Boutique. A slightly grittier and more upbeat take than the original, this Night Owls signature version is complete with its standout “moo maker” honk and New Orleans inspired elements lead by Roger Rivas on acoustic piano. This cut will hit hard on the dance floor and is surely one to leave a smile on your face.

Produced by Dan Ubick and Night Owls. Recorded and Mixed by Dan Ubick for DanUbe Productions at The Lions Den in Topanga, CA.

Stand High Records presents “Quicksand”, a brand new collaborative single between Stand High Patrol and British artists Joe Yorke & Eeyun Purkins. This groovy little rocksteady number comes on 7” vinyl.

The Dubadub Musketeers haven’t let the current situation get in the way of their will to explore new horizons. Riddims are flying out of the Donjon Studio left, right & centre. Indeed, the crew is constantly on the lookout for fresh talent and musical avenues. It’s through this process that Stand High Patrol decided to get in contact with Joe Yorke a few months ago, after becoming familiar with his incredible voice. Straight away they built a strong connection, both sharing the same kind of musical views. This collaboration quickly came to fruition. Starting as a simple dubplate test recording "Quicksand" became a proper 7 inch vinyl release.

This new single has been exquisitely mixed at Kerwax Studio, the riddim was built by Pupajim and the Dub version on the B side comes courtesy of Stand High Patrol’s official operator, Mac Gyver. Joe delivers lyrics about human kind, its flaws, its "weaknesses" and emotions, with an extraordinary vocal performance. They were written by Eeyun Purkins, his long-time musical partner and accomplice. This pen / voice duo regularly comes together to create musical gems and connoisseurs will once again get to fully appreciate the extent of their talent on “Quicksand”.

Emotional Rescue and HMV Record Shop (Japan) are delighted to present the first ever reissue of the 7" Mix of One Blood's classic Lovers Rock anthem Be Thankful, as part of their Disco Reggae Lovers series. While the King & City Records hit was reissued in its 12" form recently (erc104), this unearthed 7" Mix perfectly distills the bands take on the William DeVaughn soul all-time. At the forefront of the Lovers Rock movement, the 5 Robinson brothers that made up One Blood took their mix of Caribbean and South London heritage and crafted a uniquely black British sound, grown out of tensions, Sus law, Blues parties and sound system culture that acted as a counterpoint to the Rasta and Rocksteady styles around. In 7" form, their cover version is taught, tight and succinct, hitting the highs, but retaining the dub. It is backed with a special mix by Tokyo producer Slowly. Closely associated with the esteemed Flower Records, Masato Komatsu aka Slowly also acts as Creative Director for the rebirth of the HMV Shops in Japan, so it is fitting his respectful dub mix dives from vocal opening straight in to the bassbins of a deep dub, this is one for the heads and collectors.

Okayama’s Tsuyoshi Hamada, better known as Dayzero, launches the new decade’s next wave of ZamZam releases with two sides of 140 sound system wreckers we couldn’t be happier to unleash. Wicked releases on Sentry, Heavy Traffic, Vomitspit, and FKOF have set the stage for this 7” stormer. Deftly amalgamating influences from reggae, hip hop, and old school dubstep wobblers, Dayzero is a master of momentum and swagger, captured here in dubwise style & fashion. "Orbit Dub" is a cascade of dirty drums- smashing snares & rusty hats, deep-anchor sub and mid-range wub movement, all of it drenched in reverb, with a snippet of sound tape and siren looping in the distance for contrast. "Theory Dub" clears the air for a wary view of a dystopian world torn by war and environmental collapse. With an intro cut from lacerating hi hats and test tones, kick and bass double in a pounding minimalist trudge, stopping only to blare distorted horns over an empty, forgotten battlefield. These are rare tunes that manage to be both destructively heavy and intoxicatingly elated at the same time. Full points in the dance!!

Release:2019 / US – Original
Genre:Reggae / Dancehall
Originally released in the winter of 2012 as part of a self-released E.P., "Never Answer" b/w "Questions" has been remastered and lovingly pressed onto a 45rpm, 7" record - the way it should be! One of the first songs that found bassist Preet Patel in the proverbial driver's seat, the tune began as a instrumental demo with only a chorus melody and a strong UK lovers rock vibe. Once Preet played it for the rest of the group the tune quickly came to life with the addition of Dan Klein's sincere, soulful vocal melody that pays homage to a long-time personal hero of the Frightnrs, the legendary Sugar Minott. The lovers touch mixed with the gritty Brooklyn & Queens rocksteady approach the Frightnrs have become known for has evolved into something all their own...some might say Frightsteady. A truly hidden gem in the Frightnrs formidable catalog, that is sure to bring joy to any and all discerning selectors out there in the Daptone Universe.

Non-album single by the disco incarnation of the beloved Zamrock band. Occupying a no-man’s land between the Witch’s Zamrock and disco periods, “Freedom Fighter” is the missing link of the Witch story and has remained unreleased until now. Unlocking the mystery of how the Witch shifted shape at the beginning of the 1980s, the transition from the Prog sensibilities of their final rock offerings to the synth-licked beats that would characterise their boogie albums is documented here at 45rpm. The replica edition of the rare Wit3 7-inch is available in an edition of 300 with a trippy tribal outer sleeve and a numbered insert detailing the single’s remarkable story. Profits from the sale of this 7″ are going to Witch’s Stanford Tembo for medical treatment. “Many Zambian bands underwent interesting evolutionary trajectories over the course of the 1970s but nothing matches the radical leap undertaken by Witch from the bold and progressive Afro-rock of their Janet album in 1977 to their fully fledged boogie outing Movin’ On in 1980. These two incarnations of Zambia’s most cherished ensemble have been comprehensively documented over the last decade and have attracted distinct legions of Zamrock and disco acolytes. Unreleased until now, the non-album single “Freedom Fighter” (with it’s quirky reggae B-side) emerges as the missing link that unites the two Witch camps, finding the group in Zimbabwe as the new nation came into being and documenting a mercurial period with their sound in the process of shapeshifting. “ - Sharp Flat Records.

Continuing to push his sound into new realms through experimentation with different influences, Joaquin Cornejo returns to Earthly Measures with his first ever vinyl release. The ‘Las Frutas’ EP contains 6 genre-bending, tempo-shifting tracks that form to create a mesmerising blend of footwork, dub, Latin & African percussion. ‘Las Frutas’ explores a collaboration with both the Spanish singer Alex Serra and British DJ and trumpet player DJ Swordfish. It’s constructed by a warped and pitched down drum break that has been slowly surrounded by subby kicks, toms and dub chords that echo through tape delays, giving it a wonderfully spaced out atmosphere that provides the perfect backdrop for the soothing vocals and brass instruments. ‘Spatial Request’ sees a shift in tempo as Joaquin once again blends elements of Dub but this time with the driving Dominican rhythm Merengue. The result is a track that is very much fuel for the mind and body as the vibey atmosphere and percussive focus helps to keep the track moving with bouncy momentum. Effortlessly combining music from his home country with the Dub theme that has been apparent throughout, ‘Dub en 3’ is a percussion jam from Ecuadorian percussion duo Consulado del Ritmo, where African triplet rhythms crossover with strong dub techno stabs and a Dub MC sample echoes in and out creating a effective blend of tribal and dubby elements. ‘Eso’ sees the return of the percussive wizardry of Consulado del Ritmo but this time in collaboration with the Venezuelan singer Gotopo. A relentless amalgamation of 160bpm djembe grooves, solid 808 kick drums, deep and sultry vocals and synth stabs feed-backing on tape create a driving blend of African percussion and footwork with a subtle touch of dub techno. Perhaps the darkest track on the record, ‘Shadow’ is a collaboration with the English singer-songwriter Wabi Sabi aka Anna Bailey. Exploring a deep fusion of footwork, dubstep and dub techno alongside strong tape delay and Wabi Sabi’s hauntingly beautiful vocals, it glides experimentally through the shadows of the previous track. ‘Las Frutas’ Vapor Mix’ is a distant dreamy take on the original where the vocals ebb and flow throughout creating an otherworldly ambience. This piece is made up of elements from the other tracks, pitched down or up on tape and layered in a tempo-independent way, producing the perfect ambient ending to the journey.

Rooted in a dancehall style, "Pull Up Dat" is full of good vibes with Red Fox confidently leading the dance. Poirier brings a modern touch that relates to the 90's dancehall scene. Liam Bailey comes out swinging with "White Light," an instant-classic, dancefloor filler. The rough and tough drum break intro catches you from the first beat before the track gives way to an infectious and uplifting reggae-dis- co number. Liam's instantly recognizable voice showers his muse with praise over deep round bass lines and a four on the floor beat. The combination of Leon Michels' crushing production and Bailey's lyrics like "You love yourself, you're so exciting, like no one else"... is sure to make this a staple in dj sets around the globe. The B side "Cold & Clear" is a proper lighters in the air, slap the wall, top ranking tune. The track struts in the door with a natural and undeniable confidence. Liam weaves a heavy metacognitive story over the one drop drums, perfect basslines, and organ stabs that will have people stepping in rhythm. The lo-fi production weaves elements from the finest early rocksteady era with touches from the late 70s / early 80s digital era and takes the entire vibe into the present with unorthodox arrangements and vocal treatments. Bailey has a tune here that will hold up next to the classics in the dancehalls from the yards of Jamaica to the discotheques in his homeland of England.
