A deconstruction of Ska, Rocksteady and Skinhead Reggae from the 50s, 60s and 70s. Rather a passionate deconstruction of a genre than compositions or remixes per se, this incantatory tribute favors abstraction using loops, distortion, compression, variations of speed and height, and effects (delay, reverb, chorus).

Sufferer
LP | 1970 | US | Reissue (Antarctica Starts Here)

Release:1970 / US – Reissue
Genre:Reggae / Dancehall
While Montego Bay natives Jackie Bernard, his brother Footy Bernard and cousin Lloyd Kerr recorded under various guises in the early ’60s, their collective arrival as The Kingstonians in 1967 marked a sea change not only in the vocal trio’s productivity and popularity, but also in the emerging Reggae sound. The Kingstonians made several chart-topping singles between 1968 and 1970, including the massive hit “Singer Man” whose success ultimately led to the release of their sole LP, Sufferer.

Originally issued on Trojan, Sufferer collects a dozen of The Kingstonians’ best-known songs. Produced by Derrick Harriott, these truly boss sounds would pack dancehalls on the island as well as become the soundtrack for working-class youth across ’70s Britain.

The title track remains a classic of the early Reggae era with impeccable arrangements, stuttering organ and soul-steeped lyrics. The Kingstonians’ shift away from Rocksteady modes is perhaps most apparent on the aforementioned “Singer Man”—an irresistible forward groove, prompting a deeper danceability that is rightly centered on real feeling.

Antarctica Starts Here presents the first-time domestic release of Sufferer. Reproducing the original sleeve design, this reissue is part of an archival series that focuses on Trojan’s essential ’60s and ’70s catalogue. Liner notes by Laurence Cane-Honeysett.

7 inch singles were instrumental to the development of the Jamaican music
industry, more affordable than full lengths for the consumer, they also
allowed the labels to turnaround what was being recorded into music played
from their booming sound systems as quickly as possible. In that spirit, Get
On Down will be reissuing some of the most crucial Jamaican sides on 45,
this time out with The Jamaicans most well-known cut “Ba Ba Boom.”
The Jamaicans first formed in 1967 as the Cool Shakes. By the time the year
was over, they’d updated their line up from a trio to a quartet, changed their
name to the Jamaicans and took “Ba Ba Boom” to first place in that year’s
Island Festival Song Contest. Soon after, the cut (backed by Tommy
McCook & The Supsersonics) was issued on the Treasure Isle imprint to
instant classic status. On the flip, it’s Twilight Zone, a reverb drenched
proto-dub instrumental version of the song.

Available January. TRS Returns with another pearl from the Ja-Man camp this time from Jah Children with their adaptation of “If I Could”. Recorded and voiced in 1978 and produced by Bunny & Manzie in Jamaica alongside the cream of the crop musicians at the time which made up the Ja-Man all-stars. This beautiful roots tune is a tribute to the 1970 version by Simon & Garfunkel's “El Cóndor Pasa (If I Could)” which originally an orchestral musical piece written in 1913 and based on traditional Andean folk music from Peru. It has been estimated that around the world more than 4000 versions of the melody have been produced, along with 300 sets of lyrics, but none as hard hitting as this Jamaican roots version.

Eek A Mouse (born Ripton Hylton), is one of earliest artists to be described as a “singjay. He adopted the stage name “Eek A Mouse” in 1979, taking the name of a racehorse he always bet on, and the name stuck. The Mouse needs to description really, with a slew of hits under his belt throughout the early 80’s, too many anthems to mention, his popularity began to wane slightly towards the mid 80s. He decided to target the USA with the established label RAS Records led by the iconic Doctor Dread. As a result Eek A Mouse started to appeal to a wider cross over audience and toured extensively even residing outside of Jamaica for some time. In 1987 the LP ‘Eek-A-Nomics’ was released and ‘Glamity’ was definitely one of the stand out tracks that didn’t stray too far from the Dancehall and was released also as a 7. Now reissued and under licence, ‘Glamity’ perfectly captures that time of the late 80s, and in his own description where Eek A Mouse was at, bere glam and fame, and certainly no complaints.

For the new year, your friends at Get On Down bring you a beautiful
package of roots reggae weirdness from the almighty Upsetter:
Lee “Scratch” Perry.
This 12” single features the song “Disco Devil,” recorded by the legendary
Jamaican mad genius with the group The Full Experience, as a version of
Max Romeo’s “Chase the Devil.” But don’t jump to conclusions based on
the song title – musically this is as far as you can get from
Saturday Night Fever.
Thick, reverb-drenched dub/roots reggae laced with Perry’s dusted vocals
and brilliant work behind the boards are on the menu throughout. This cut
is undeniably underrated in Perry’s catalog and fans will eat this up, since it
has always been hard to find on 7” and 12” for many years now.

"I've said it before, but dancehall and its influence on UK music has been a massive inspiration for me, going way back to hearing Chris Goldfinger on Radio 1 playing music that was like nothing else I'd heard before. I love that fundamental rhythmic pattern, and I love how within the same world you can have some tunes that are built around the sweetest melodies and harmonies, and others that are built around super-tuff minimal drums and crazy squeeks and bleeps.

When it came time to build another EP for Critical, I decided to link up with my good friend and long-time collaborator Rider Shafique, who has a much deeper knowledge of this music than me, and together create something that references both old and new dancehall, while still being playable in the kinds of sets I've become known for. There's no 'halftime' and no chopped-up jungle breaks here - we wanted to make something really focussed and even 'disciplined' - and hopefully we've succeeded.

Big shouts to the vocal collaborators - super hyped to work with Stush on a tune, Irah came through with the righteous fire, and Tiffanie Malvo absolutely bodied her beat - but ultimate biggups have to go to Rider. This wasn't a project where I made the beats and Rider voiced them - for pretty much every tune, we worked and reworked the riddims together. We're both stoked on the results, and it seems like people in the dance feel the same way."

He introduces today his new album The Untouchable, a really great collaboration with some of the best artists of the international reggae scene such as Tippa Irie, Rod Taylor, Sabrina Pallini, Da Real Storm, Dubiterian, Ilhame Paris, Kelli Love. Scientist’s The Untouchable album is a concept of reintroducing rhythms produced by Bunny Lee from the 70s and some rhythms produced by Scientist from the 80s by introducing some New School Artists alongside the Old School to preserve the Power of Dub Reggae Music. No matter where you are the music has the power to cross the borders to soothe your heart and soul and make you feel alive.

"Augustus Pablo (given name Horace Swaby) was born just outside of Kingston. “I am a Kingstonian,” he told the NME in 1986, “but my heart is for the hills.” This mystical connection to “the hills” is at the heart of Pablo's unique and immediately identifiable sound. By the late '60s, Swaby and his brother Dougie had founded a small sound system they called Rockers. The brothers spent a lot of time in record shops, including Aquarius, where owner Herman Chin-Loy heard Swaby experimenting on his melodica and was struck by the inspiration to record. The resulting tune was credited to Augustus Pablo, a name that Chin-Loy invented, as the story goes, to give an air of mystery to the release. Pablo recorded two more singles soon after with “Java” becoming a major hit and being voted Instrumental Song Of The Year by
Jamaica's Swing Magazine. This success led to the Randy's label moving to create a full-length album from Pablo. Recording in the Randy's studio upstairs from the record shop “we weren't watching the clock...we had the studio,” Clive Chin recalled. The band included a cast of the greatest reggae musicians of all time: future Wailer Tyrone Downie on keyboards, Aston “Family Man” Barrett, “Fully” Fullwood and Lloyd Parks on the bass, Carlton Barrett, “Santa” Davis and Lloyd “Tin Leg” Adams were on drums and Earl “Chinna” Smith played guitar. In addition to these future Hall of Famers, the mixing board was helmed by Errol Thompson. Thompson and Chin would together pioneer a tough, new reggae sound that, Chin referred to as “Rockers” after the Swaby brothers' Rockers Hi-Fi sound system. Augustus Pablo sadly passed away in 1999. “He was 46,” his obituary stated, “and lived in the hills outside Kingston,” where his heart belonged. His music has endured and continues to inspire. This Is Augustus Pablo is considered among the greatest collections of
Jamaican instrumental music and is an essential part of reggae history.
