Regis’ deadly slab of gothic hard-body machine funk returns, the blueprint for those shockout British Murder Boys excursions and generally one of the most influential Techno records of all time, here on a newly mastered 20th anniversary edition, once again ready to wallop. ‘Penetration’ practically defined this type of loopy, gnashing techno before a gradated phase shift into sleeker forms of minimalism came to pass during the following decade. It would be nearly 20 years before Regis issued his solo follow-up, ‘Hidden In This Is The Light That You Miss’, with time well spent on developing his roles in British Murder Boys and Sandwell District, among many other things, but ‘Penetration’ stands as a paradigm of Techno’s gothic-toned, gnashing wing in its purest, deadliest form. Bolstered by Simon Shreeve’s airy remaster, ‘Penetration’ kicks like a thoroughbred. From the stentorian, Latinate drum friction of ‘Get On Your Knees’ to the monotone drone tension of ‘Aftertaste of Guilt’ and ‘It’s A Man’s World’, or the stealth ratchet of ‘Thirst’, it’s not hard to hear hallmarks of Regis’ sound that would inform his run of seminal British Murder Boys productions with Surgeon a couple of years later. Yet cuts such as the shark-eyed drive ‘White Stains’ and the sleazy dark room afterthoughts of ‘Slave to the Inevitable’ distinguish the album as sole property of Regis in his prime, before taking on the mantle of UK industrial music’s renaissance man over the past decade. With 20 years hindsight, it remains a tough, adrenalised energy-rush for the ages - here sounding heavier than ever.

Wrapping up our 20th year in fine style EPM are delighted to reveal the release of 'Beyond the Reach of Time', the surprise 4th instalment of our Epm20 vinyl series from UK techno master, Regis. Karl O'Connor (aka Regis) has remained a maverick and iconic figure on the global techno stage, ever since his 'Montreal' EP burned his name across the world's dancefloors some 25 years ago. His unconventional and single-minded label, Downwards, often shrouded by mythology, has also helped to launch fellow protagonist Surgeon as one of techno's most revered DJ/producers.

Regis revisits his Blackest Ever Black-era recordings in entirely reworked and remastered versions of perhaps our favourite of all of his recordings, embracing space and subbass with influence from techstep D&B as much as dark ambient and gothic sound design styles. Properly massive, essential gear, highly recommended if yr looking for something to file alongside your T++ and British Murder Boys.

Regis revisits his releases for the dearly departed Blackest Ever Black with a ‘Tongue Box’ of remastered and restructured versions bearing the toned muscle and darkroom workshop atmospheres found in his 2020 debut album ‘Hidden In This Is The Light That Makes You’. The set sees Regis return to a point when his sound had fully shifted from brittle, loopy bangers to a more sensuous, serpentine style embracing space and subbass, in a vital new mutation of UK industrial body musicks.

Restructured versions of modern classics, the T++-like broken roller ‘Blood Witness’ from the ‘In A Syrian Tongue’ 12”, and the snarling post-punk techno swagger of ‘Blinding Horses’ lead to the NIN-like beat-less scape of ‘Blinding Horses (Stable By Mix)’ - exclusive to the set - while he performs back-alley dentistry on the gnashing 16th note arp fangs of ‘Manbait’ with lacerating effect, beside the haunted romantic chamber string sentiments of ‘The Solution’ which could almost come from some Derek Jarman soundtrack, and 2014’s ‘Masterside’ appears remastered to best show off both sides of its swooning and sinuous goth techno silhouette.

Finally, Regis lets his rhythmic noise opus out into the world, a bruising and hauntingly absorbing album - his first since 2001 - dispatched on his pivotal label; Downwards. On a masterful twenty-year followup to ‘Penetration’, Karl O’Connor yields a definitive solo LP that distills his passions for sonic brutalism and bastardised Chicago tracks with syncopated UK swagger and reverberating warehouse ballistics. Its lip-bitingly gripping effect is testament to a resounding reputation as one of Industrial music’s most influential producers, and sees the artist bring his own influences - from Test Department to Jeff Mills - into line with his potent palette of narcotised tones.
