After a string of well received releases on the likes of 22a and Alexander Nut's Hotep, Henry Wu steps forth with his most bold statement to date with ‘Good Morning Peckham' on the Rhythm Section International Imprint.

Arguably one of the most hotly-tipped producers in the UK right now, Wu's broken compositions and deep jazzy keys have earned him plaudits from scene veterans as well as peers, all keen to see what Henry will do next.

With a refreshing take on rhythm and a virtuosic musicality born out of years of recording and touring as a session player, Henry Wu represents a brightly shining light in the already glowing London community.

Equally adept on the keyboard as he is on the MPC, on Good Morning Peckham, we are also given a further insight into the mind of Wu as he takes to the mic - toasting along to the soon-to-be-classic ‘ Croydon Depot' and spitting on the intro to the broken beat inspired ‘Neezy'.

A South East Londoner born and bred, Henry's debut on Rhythm Section has been a long time coming and it seems that it was worth the wait as Henry presents 6 tracks of white hot intention.

Henry Wu is a name that we're going to hear a lot more of in the future….

Good morning Peckham!

Bradley Zero celebrates five years of his Rhythm Section International imprint with 12” compilation SHOUTS Vol. 1 & 2. Vol. 1 represents the more club ready side of the label whilst Vol. 2 explores more mellow territories.

A go-to label for the connoisseurs Rhythm Section INTL is a UK staple. The raison d’être has always been to unearth and nurture new talent, not just via the catalogue but through the now established network of radio shows, concerts and club nights Rhythm Section has become known for. Bradley met Duke Hugh in Amsterdam, when he handed him a green USB stick after a show. He played the promos in the empty club and the first track immediately grabbed his attention - he knew it was something special. When he remembered the hook to Green Leaf the next morning he signed the release almost instantly. Each song has its own essence, there is absolutely no filler and the entire double pack sits together as a perfect whole. Flirting with aspects of broken beat, Jazz, hip hop and dreamy electronica - Duke Hugh winds together a most idiosyncratic release equally at home on the peak time dancefloor as it would be for a long road trip. Canvas is a big statement from an artist who's here to stay.

Sprung up from his much-fêted clubnight of the same name, Bradley Zero has enlisted fellow Peckham local Al Dobson Jr to inaugurate Rhythm Section International with this: Rye Lane Volume 1, an 11 track mini-LP stuffed to the rafters with summery goodness. The importance of location on Rye Lane Volume 1 appears both tantamount and inconsequential: many of the titles on offer dot specific points of reference on the map (Peru, Grenada, Cameroon, Columbia, Peckham's Rye Lane), but Dobson Jr does his best to melt these heterogeneous influences down into something definably his own.

Elliptical funkiness and nimble calypso grooves bob and weave through the melodic, soft-tone jazz stylings, all underpinned by a steady bump. This melange of warm styles mirrors the Peckham streets upon which it was cooked up, teaming with raw energy but quietly confident enough not to shout too loud about it. Tempos shift up and down at will as Dobson Jr shuffles through his strong pack at speed, maxing out the replay value.

With it being almost impossible to define the sound of Rhythm Section in one record, Rye Lane Volume 1 perfectly fits the role of inaugural release by the way in which the album encapsulates the sum of Rhythm Section’s influences into one coherent blend of experimental, percussive led jams. This selection of tracks, carefully curated from over 200 never released works, is a concise statement from the Peckham based label as it confidently steps out from it’s humble suburban origins into the international arena.

From the backwaters of New Orleans, Hiatt dB bursts forth with ‘Palimpsest’, a remarkable debut on Rhythm Section International, marking the label’s first recruit from the US of A. Having grown up in San Antonio feeling the absence of ‘club culture’, instead finding dive bars and live music venues in its place, Hiatt sourced creative inspiration elsewhere and evolved a love for the region that was born out of its vivid history. “I’m proud and grateful to be making music in the American Gulf South - a part of the world that has brought so many people, ideas, and sounds together by way of both tragedy and triumph alike.” After a move to New Orleans in 2015 with the intention to widen the scope of his musical output, newly exposed influences from the Mediterranean to West Africa, Brazil through to the Caribbean motivated him to begin making dance music and performing as a percussionist and DJ. The Mystery Zone club nights commenced not long after, followed by the label and a mission statement of facilitating his community and exporting their work to the global discourse. As such, Hiatt has been instrumental in nurturing his burgeoning local scene. He enthuses, “there is a sound developing here among artists making dance music with these unique and varied influences, and I’m excited to share our take on club culture.” Simmering ‘Sun Spell’ explodes in glorious technicolour as we meet lead track - an orgy of uplifting piano stabs, hyper-speed second line rhythms and spiralling bass. This frenetic, joyful opener - road tested and verified extensively by Rhythm Section head Bradley Zero - has ‘peak Time’ written all over it. New Orleans is a drum city and true to his home Hiatt doesn’t let up on the rhythmic assault with second track ‘Palimpsest’. An intricate snare rudiment leads us to a demented bassline which sears a hole through the percussion as it builds to a dizzying crescendo, only to release the pressure teasingly, time and time again. Hiatt dB is an artist who wears his city’s influence proudly, and as we flip the record over we see these local ingredients incorporated once again but this time resulting in a distinctly more ethereal energy. The sizzling stylings of ‘6 O’clock Rock’ have ‘Big Easy’ written all over them, perfectly complimented by a cameo from the mellow canary himself, just to make sure the vibes is right... To round off this exceptionally strong debut EP, the closing track takes a turn towards the deeper side of the New Orleans sound. Effortless, hypnotic and masterfully understated, sit back and bask in the euphoric, sparkling breaks of ‘Everyday Break’. It’s the warm afterglow you need as the journey of the record comes to its triumphant conclusion.

“I was raised off tapes by Skibba
Learnt the streets off Skinner
Where the walls are thin and the grey cloud thick Tick tock, another day’s lost
As I drown in smog..."
Peckham MC & DJ Pinty is set to release his debut EP ‘City Limits’ this March on Rhythm Section International. Following the recent release of his debut single ‘Tropical Bleu’ , a laid-back broken-beat roller produced by friend and collaborator King Krule under his DJ JD SPORTS alias, Pinty has quickly become the talk of the town.
As the new voice of South London, Pinty’s witty wordplay and effervescent club sound take influence from the introspective poetry of The Streets, the downbeat moods of King Krule and the jazz tinged house tones of production partner Maxwell Owin. Since his self-released 2015 mixtape, the ten-track spectacle ‘Midnight Moods’, he has also begun to make waves with his distinctly individual live performances, playing in Paris with hip-hop star Rejjie Snow, in New York with RATKING, and locally for the likes of Boiler Room and Just Jam. Features on Glenn Astro and Jamie Isaac tracks along with gracing the Autumn issue of the Peckham Peculiar round off a noteworthy rise to prominence.
Lead single ‘Tropical Bleu’ boasted the hallmarks of Marshall’s late-night production coupled with Pinty’s unique MC-led approach to the dancefloor.
Now ‘Nightcrawler’ presents a simmering nocturnal dance cut, charged with glowing bursts of deep house, candid lyrics and aself-directed video portraying a woozy tale of London’s underbelly.
Flitting between hip hop, house, UKG, and darker electronic sounds, Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section International makes perfect sense for Pinty’s debut release, which takes its title from a prolific early 2000’s South London graffiti legend. With deeply personal lyricism and wry humour, ‘City Limits’ adds colour to a mostly grey city. Music and creativity was a core part of Pinty’s youth, his dad was a poet and older brother an MC during the golden age of garage and jungle. Fast forward to 2019 and he’s part of a dynamic collective of producers, singers, musicians and rappers, as well as hosting radio shows on influential stations Reprezent and Balamii.

On a collision course with earth from the furthest reaches of the universe, The Colours That Rise
announce their debut album “Grey Doubt’ on the inimitable Rhythm Section International. Comprised of producer duo Simeon Jones and Nathanael Williams, The Colours That Rise have previously turned heads with 2017’s “2020” EP released on Breaker Breaker (the label credited with breaking Ross From Friends).
Returning with their most accomplished offering to date, “Grey Doubt” features acclaimed guests such as Yazmin Lacey, Yussef Dayes and Andrew Ashong, each respectively complementing the incredible musicianship on display here, capturing the true zeitgeist of present day UK. Combining live instrumentation and analogue synths, intricate, intertwining textures and melodies run deep throughout this beautifully crafted afrofuturist voyage, exploring the darkest recesses of the galaxy, through weatherbeaten and asteroid damaged synth waves and broken drum patterns reverberating out into the vastness of space.
Pre-announcement single ‘Home Time’ has picked up steam with support across BBC 6 Music and 1Xtra through the likes of Benji B, Tom Ravenscroft, Jamz Supernova and Mary Anne Hobbs, who awarded it as her ‘Near Future’ track. The duo are also set for a live performance at Rhythm Section’s showcase at SXSW 2020.

With their third album 'Fluid Motion', Melbourne's 30/70 are set to soar into higher territory as the face of Australia's newest wave of soul-influenced brilliance. From the swirling opening pads of "Brunswick Hustle" all the way through to the sax-laden shimmer of "Flowers" at its close, 'Fluid Motion' is an instant classic, effortlessly shifting between neo-soul and languid, astralfacing jazz textures and authentic vignettes of UK club music history.
It's a formula that those already caught in 30/70's celestial web are fully aware of; first defined on the local heat of their 2015 debut 'Cold Radish Coma' and majestically expanded upon with their critically acclaimed 2017 release 'Elevate' on Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section INTL (mixed by Hiatus Kaiyote's Paul Bender). 'Elevate' did exactly that - elevating both the scope of the band's sound as well as their standing in the local and international community.
Since the last record was released, the music has brought the band on world tours and to the attention of the wider public and key tastemakers alike. Strongly supported by the likes of Gilles Peterson, Tom Ravenscroft, Jamie Cullum, Matthew Halsall and Bradley Zero, the UK has become something of a second home for 30/70.

Rhythm Section look to Poland once more for two of the most uplifting tracks of the year. Earth Trax (known for his productions as The Phantom & one half of Ptaki) and newcomer Newborn Junior pull two absolute classics out of the bag here that do what they say on the tin. Both Sax Track and Flute Track centre around ecstatic MIDI melodies on (you guessed it) Saxophone and Flute! Falling somewhere between the late night deep house excursions of Ron Trent (circa Morning Factory era) and more recent retro-leaning breakbeat driven output from the Pender Street Steppers et al, the Sax & Flute EP is a masterclass in sustain-release. Born out of a chance encounter in 2012 that led to a lasting friendship, Rhythm Section Int’l & producer, DJ, label boss, radio host, and record store owner Ruf Dug join forces to present ‘The Committee’. Sitting somewhere between fictional band and studio collaboration, the record is the first fully in-house production for Rhythm Section, recorded start to finish at their own South East London studio and featuring vocals from label founder Bradley Zero and label mate FYI Chris’s Chris Watson.
Right from the studio’s initial creation, Ruf Dug felt inspired by the space’s unique musical identity, jumping at the opportunity to create a collaborative record there over a two week studio residency. And between his DJ residencies at Pikes, Gottwood and NTS radio the Manchester-via-Ibiza computer game freak and renowned vinyl digger found the time to meld his wide range of influences. Having been a key driving force behind Be With’s Holy Grail reissue of Bô’vel's - Check 4 U , Ruffy has more than earned his stripes as a boss level Street Soul collector, pre-empting the resurgent interest in the genre, which began in the mid 80s and is still a popular sound in Manchester today. This new release draws parallels between the DIY attitude of Street Soul labels like TSR, Intrigue, Jam Today & Elite and the modus operandi of the RS studio.
A wholly synergetic work, the project’s title “The Committee” reflects the collaborative nature of this release, as Ruf Dug states: “Authorship is a strange concept at the best of times but this genuinely is a group effort and I very much enjoyed feeling like just one piece of a larger entity - the complete opposite to my usual production experience of being all alone in my room for days at a time.” The EP also features additional production from Rhythm Section’s own Mali Baden-Powell, who DJ’s and produces as Z Lovecraft and comes from a background in Street Soul music, his father was also in legendary UK acid jazz collective D'Influence. In addition, the record features a dynamic range of vocalists: sultry deliveries from Natalie Wildgoose and Sienna Mustafa, a rap from her sister Nadina, and the vocal debuts of FYI Chris’s Chris Watson and Bradley Zero. “I had been joking with Bradley that he needed to be on the record somehow and he did appear, playing an egg shaker at one point, but his singing wasn't in the least bit planned… I got back from lunch, and the next thing you know he just starts singing...So I dragged him reluctantly down the corridor [to the studio] and that's it- now he's a pop star!”
Also playfully melding digidub, soul, chicago house and acid jazz, the release not only marks a new chapter in the development of the Rhythm Section sound, but also catalogues a crucial turning Point in Ruf Dug’s musical development. Still oozing with the cheeky DIY approach that won his own label, RUF KUTZ an army of fans, this latest Collab steps things up and opens a whole new realm of possibilities for one of Manchester’s favourite sons.

After a debut outing on International Black last year with his best friend Mallard, LT graduates onto Rhythm Section INTL with a stunning debut solo effort: FOREST FLOOR.
Aged just 20 years old, Lewis Taylor aka LT is another prodigal talent from the north of England, whose association with Rhythm Section goes back to his school days. A fan of the label from an early age, Lewis regularly made pilgrimages to the pool hall as soon as he was old enough to do so. It was these visits with his old school friend Mallard (who had recently moved down to London from Derbyshire to study music) which proved to be a formative influence, prompting him to try his hand at production...It turned out he was quite the natural, with his second ever effort as an 18 year old making it onto this very EP.
Sitting somewhere between electro, house and techno with a healthy dose of breaks - LT constructs complex arrangements with as much of a nod to the retro summer of love stylings of Lone as to the new age bounce of the Pender Street Steppers. The piano house stabs of ‘Untitled (Chesney)’ reverberate around chopped breaks and screaming samples, anchored down by bouncy organ bass and FM lead synth which really begs the question: ‘How did LT develop such a rich lexicon of club culture references in such a short time?’ We’d be tempted to believe it was just pure luck, if this mastery of rave aesthetics wasn’t repeated throughout the EP...
Mesosphere fizzes with arpeggiated energy before giving way to a magnificent yet subtle drop that will serve festival main stages as well as it will back room clubs. Before the EP is over, LT has one more trick up his sleeve in Forest Floor - the titular track which is the musical equivalent of watching the sun rise through a misty glade after a night spent alone in the wilderness. With this gentle touch, LT proves he’s more than another kid on Ableton making bangers - he has breadth, incredible musicality and a rare ability to transcript sceneries into sounds. Finishing with ‘North Circular’ possibly a reference to the free Parties on the London Orbital or merely just a coincidence… you decide.
We couldn’t be happier to welcome LT onto the RS INTL roster in what feels like a fulfilment of destiny. It’s such a great honour to have nurtured and now introduce the next generation via the Rhythm Section platform.
