Mass VI
LP | 2017 | US | Original (Neurot)

Release:2017 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
Contrasts have always been deep and at the very heart of Amenra, who have been uttering prayers and holding masses for eighteen years. Tormented darkness has always coexisted alongside luminous beauty, and thunderous impacts instantly follow frail, delicate subtleties. Songs that engulf everyone in the world suddenly feel whispered inside a solitary womb. Mass VI is here, and more than any other album in the band’s past, it highlights those contrasts. The eerie quiet of the first couple minutes of “Children Of The Eye” announces the coming storm, and the nine explosive, cathartic minutes that follow hold all the striking disparate emotions one expects from the band. This album is an emotional rollercoaster until its very last second, when “Diaken” abruptly ends at its very climax. Every band member is stretched to their physical limits throughout: Colin H. Vaneeckhout (vocals) puts in the performance of a lifetime, but he is inextricably intertwined to the guitar-work of Mathieu J. Vandekerckhove; Lennart Bossu expresses unimaginable weight, both physical and spiritual, as well as weaving melodies of the utmost delicacy; the rhythm section of Levy Seynaeve and Bjorn J. Lebon rumbles like a consuming thunderstorm or retreat to the shadows with flowing spontaneity. No love without pain. No life without death. No light without darkness. That is the conflict at the heart of the album and at the heart of what it means to be human, and this music wrenches that ambivalence out. It’s hard to think of a better person to capture this enormity than Billy Anderson. The legendary American producer was already the chosen one for Mass V, and between Neurosis’s Through Silver In Blood, Sleep’s Dopesmoker, and Eyehategod’s Dopesick, among many others, he’s been a decisive element in the building of many a true classic.

Tompkins Square's recent double-LP, Imaginational Anthem vol 8: The Private Press shed light on forgotten, impossibly rare guitar recordings spanning several decades. Tom Armstrong's The Sky Is An Empty Eye is the first of several reissues planned by Tompkins Square of full albums by artists featured on IA8. Armstrong's self-released LP from 1987 sports blissed out acoustic numbers like the one featured on IA8, along with some electric workouts and even a deep pysch vocal tune. Tom's main mode of distribution for the album was handing the LP to drunken patrons at a bar in Pinos Altos, NM. Now Tompkins Square makes it a bit easier to acquire.

Genre:Rock / Indie
Received a 7.4 rating from Pitchfork.Awaited for years by the large nationwide cult of Boggers in the know, Erin Birgy's second LP at the helm of the fog-shrouded ship they call Mega Bog is an instant and timeless classic. It's equal parts nostalgic and futuristic, mapping a new, jazz-literate and free form of songcraft onto the model of the traditional guitar-based band. It's poetry on roller skates, defying recognizable structures in favor of a stream-of-consciousness flow that guides Erin's lyrics around their many soft and uncertain turns. It's an inspiring example of a unique vision carried to it's most honest and vulnerable realization. Happy Together was assembled on tape amidst a lot of movement, including Erin's relocation from Seattle to New York. Like Joni Mitchell or Beefheart, Birgy has a seemingly magical ability to steer a diverse bunch of players into her own dream-world. And this album has a lot of players, many with big credentials we'll refrain from mentioning (except for Zach Burba and Will Murdoch from IJI, and James Krivchenia from Big Thief, who earn mentions for being particularly present). Considering its variety of personnel and its long gestation, Happy Together is a remarkably consistent and complete record that cuts the deepest when experienced from start to finish, as it arcs from the surreal bubblegum tempos of “Diznee” and “Marianne,” thru the extended dreamscapes of songs like “192014,” and out to the free-wheeling catharsis of “Blackout” and “Fwee.” Take the journey.

L'Uovo di Colombo is yet another classic example of Italian progressiveband in the early '70s abandoned by their record company following thecompletion of their first LP. Actually, the labels were two, Odeon andColumbia, and it is weird that from those two 'giants' wasn't born a newcommercial phenomenon. The musicians of the group were in fact all professionals, coming from (IFholks, Flea on the Honey) or later joining (Cherry Five, Dwight Logan,Royal Academy of Music, Samadhi) other bands, and the level ofpreparation and how you feel in the eight tracks album. The style is a rock,at times hard, with keyboards always in evidence (and subsequentreferences to Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, Le Orme, EL & P ...) and a solidrhythmic base.Long out of print in its LP, "The Egg of Columbus" is now available again onlabel VM, in a faithful reproduction of the original and coloured vinyl.

Genre:Rock / Indie
With a riff that packs more beef than a fraternity BBQ and drips raunch like a cat house bidet, Atlantic Thrills' second LP begins with a warning against the dangers of staying sober on a weeknight and the invitation to indulge in your favorite cardinal sin continues across 12 tracks steeped in the legacy of the perverted American rock'n roll underground. There isn't a touch of irony here; while Atlantic Thrills make music that could be umbrella-ed under the catch-all "garage rock", they do it with a confidence that never retreats into novelty. The gang chorus in "Hold it Down" hits like a romance begun in a bar fight. The fuzz-gospel sermon of "Bible in a Bowl" makes utter sense after a breakfast of bong hits and amphetamines. Guitar player Mike Dominguez's sci-fi surf guitar (you'll swear it's an organ) haunts "Almost Anything" and "On Your Own" like the ghost of Del Shannon. "Dan Don't Go" and "Blood Shot Eyes" let the band flex muscles of a different sort, with clean, nimble vocal and guitar harmonies. Recorded in a basement, of course, but there's nothing "lo-fi" about the Thrills sound. Songwriters Eric Aguiar and Dan Tanner, rounded out with Josh Towers on drums, have created a precise, streamlined juggernaut of an album that nods to the best of 1965 while still sounding firmly footed in 2015. Like a bump of cheap coke or a downtown peepshow, it's over too soon and leaves you needing more.

Formed in Swansea, Wales in 1979 from the ashes of local punk band The Noise, Venom are an unheralded UK classic. Initially taking influence from the first wave of '77 British punk like the Sex Pistols and Clash, it wasn't until after an enforced hiatus resulting from a spot of "football violence" that the band really came into it's own. Lumped in with the expanding Oi! scene, they recorded three self-funded sessions—which produced the songs on this record—but their only proper releases were contributions to two compilations: one track on the now impossible to find Swansea punk sampler Sex, Violence, & The Eternal Truth 7”, and one on Secret Records’ Back On The Streets 7”, the latter a result of Garry Bushell, the "Godfather of Oi”, being a fan. They never quite formed a following outside of their hometown, which is a shame, as the songs they left behind are as chaotic, catchy, and well-written as anything to come out of the the early '80s UK punk scene. As with most UK bands in the early '80s, violence became commonplace at their gigs causing the band to call it quits in the summer of 1982. Fortunately, with our friends at Punkhouse Records, we present the complete Venom output, packaged in only such a way as Radio Raheem does—with a custom LP jacket including a tipped-in booklet choked full of photos, flyers, and the usual bits and bobs.

Genre:Rock / Indie
Harry Pussy emerged out of the Florida swamps in 1993. Formed by Adris Hoyos and Bill Orcutt, the duo became legendary for their volatile live shows, which often devolved into violent clashes with audience members. Obliterating the lines between hardcore, noise and free jazz, the unclassifiable Harry Pussy were at once all of these things and none of them. Originally released on Siltbreeze, their self-titled debut album reveals an antagonistic and visceral approach to music: Hoyos’ self-taught, wild-style drums and shrouded screams tangling with Orcutt’s high-tension blues guitar. As David Keenan writes in the liner notes, “Harry Pussy played at such a heightened speed-of-thought climactic future-primitive peak that they outstripped technique so completely that people thought they couldn’t actually play at all.” From the opening blasts of “Youth Problem” to the spasmodic, electro-convulsive take on Kraftwerk’s “Showroom Dummies,” Harry Pussy is an absurd and devastating statement. Twenty-plus years later, rock ’n’ roll’s collective ears are still ringing. This long out-of-print vinyl release is recommended for fans of The Dead C, Royal Trux and Mars.

Genre:Rock / Indie
Screature’s second album Four Columns opens with shimmering guitar and incantation... and then it flies. Chris Orr’s atmospheric guitar is a cool companion to Liz Mahoney’s haunting vocals; Sarah Scherer’s keys swirl to Miranda Vera’s insistent beat; it’s all brought to now by Chris Woodhouse’s excellent production. Call it dark psychedelia or post-punk black, Screature’s Four Columns is a creeping zodiac of sound. Screature came to life in 2008, in a dark corner of Sacramento, California. They spent three years making music in secret, wintering to Rudimentary Peni and Chrome, summering to Music Machine and PiL. In 2011, they played their first show, with Death Grips. And then hit the stage with White Lung, Chain & the Gang, Wounded Lion, Milk Music, TV Ghost and others. 2013 saw their debut LP flash through the sky (now back in print on S-S Records). D. Yudt called it the “feel-bad record of the year.” It landed in Chelsea Wolfe’s Pitchfork year-end “Best Of.” As good as the self-titled Screature is, Four Columns is better. The songs “Down Boys,” “Half Past Midnight,” and “Lost Ones” are already live hits; on record they rule other worlds. From front to back, Four Columns intoxicates.

Long overdue vinyl reissue of the last album from Mugstar. Mugstar are an instrumental rock band from Liverpool, England influenced by krautrock, 'saucerful...' era Pink Floyd, Neu!, Sonic Youth and Oneida. They have released a number of 7" records including a recent split with Mudhoney and were one of the last bands to have recorded a 'Peel Session' for John Peel. Mugstar maintain a power and heaviness and extending their musical manoeuvres and textures into new territories, the mantra-like effect driven with restraint, atmospheric shifts and verges on enlightenment and dark uneasiness. Mugstar are a total sonic assault on the senses, live shows are filled with black and white images flashed over the stages they play. Mugstar are to release a soundtrack album to the film 'Ad Marginem' and have a number of other releases confirmed through the label mid-late 2011. Cut and pressed in Germany onto high quality Audiophile 150-gram vinyl in an edition of 1,000 copies.

The third studio album by Sonic Youth, originally released in May 1986 on SST Records, shows the first signs that the band was ready to transform their no wave past into a greater alternative rock sensibility. “EVOL … mark[s] the true departure point of Sonic Youth’s musical evolution,” says Pitchfork, who place the album in the #31 slot of their Top 100 Albums of The 1980s. “In measured increments, Thurston Moore and Lee Ranaldo … bring form to the formless, tune to the tuneless, and with the help of Steve Shelley’s drums…, [impose] melody and composition on their trademark dissonance.” Stereogum likewise praises the album as one that is “full of suspense…, the cornerstone [of] the Sonic Youth sound…, ground zero for the combination of chiming guitars and atonal skronk… [and] muggy delirium…. The virile ‘Tom Violence’ sounds less written than coaxed from a cauldron, the sort of song that fogs windows. The off-kilter [droning love song] ‘Starpower’ … is sung [by Kim Gordon] in a frosty [Nico-evoking] monotone. ‘In The Kingdom #19,’ featuring Mike Watt on bass and … vocals [by Ranaldo]…, is a harrowing story of a highway wreck over a suitably edgy instrumental backing punctuated by … live firecrackers into the vocal booth.” “EVOL slithers into the unconscious,” notes Popstache. “Once the [detuned melodies and haunting riffs and] final whispers of feedback [of ‘Expressway to Yr. Skull’] depart from the speakers…, the music [leaves] a faded footprint, forever reeling the listener back for another strange trip.”

Genre:Rock / Indie
Here it is at last! The long-rumored, sweat-soaked live album from the night Bill Davis (Dash Rip Rock) and Fred Le Blanc (Cowboy Mouth) dared Jello Biafra to join them during Jazzfest and sing all classic New Orleans soul, rhythm and blues, and (at Jello’s request) garage songs! Joining in were piano Wildman Pete “Wet Dawg” Gordon (Mojo Nixon), Pepper Keenan (Down, Corrosion of Conformity) and a wacky horn section from Egg Yolk Jubilee and Morning 40 Federation that even includes a sousaphone! You want loose? We got loose! You want crazy? That’s here, too. Walk on Jindal’s Splinters is one of the all-time great “you are there” high-energy live albums—audience participation galore, plenty of trademark Jello banter, and full-on soul / trash / frat / garage gumbo from eleven of New Orleans’ finest, just playing their asses off and having a good time doing it. The album also showcases a whole ’nother side of Jello Biafra: his deep, pre-punk roots known only to a handful of vinyl junkies and anyone lucky enough to catch his DJ gigs. For all those whose interest in Jello goes beyond the punk persona to Jello Biafra, the singer, this is for you. Maximum trash appeal! Southern roadhouse debauchery at its finest! Calls to mind those sing-along, clap-along frat-rock platters from The Premiers to The Kingsman to Geno Washington’s Hipsters, Flipsters… series, Swingin’ Medallions, or even Slade Alive! You can almost feel the grease and voodoo dripping from the walls!

2LP | 2004 | US | Reissue (Fat Wreck Chords)

Release:2004 / US – Reissue
Genre:Rock / Indie
Leftover Crack are a rare band in that they managed to master a genre of music and eventually completely redefine it. Born out of the ashes of ska/punk/crust legends Choking Victim, Leftover Crack elevated the level of expectation and popularity of the genre. Infusing elements of metal, hardcore, classical, and even some as yet undefined ingredients, LOC created a truly unique sound which they dubbed “squat-core”. Coupled with fiercely overt/controversial political and socio-economic messages and it became the recipe for some of the most volatile material the punk genre has seen in a long time. Originally released in 2004, their second album Fuck World Trade is viewed as LOC’s hallmark release. Built on the foundation of high-speed ska and thrash punk, Fuck World Trade saw the band take a freer approach both musically and lyrically, including longer songs, more varied details, and contributions from members of Anti-Flag, The Dwarves, And World/inferno Friendship Society. Of course, the band’s anti-racist, anti-sexist, anti-capitalist, and anarcho-communist message is on full display as well. Over 10 years after its release, Fuck World Trade still stands as genre defining album in both musical content and message. To mark the anniversary of the album Fat will be releasing a deluxe reissue. The reissue includes five previously unreleased bonus tracks (all originally from the Fuck World Trade session), enhanced artwork, and gatefold double-vinyl version.

Matana Roberts is one of the most acclaimed, socio-politically conscious and aesthetically intrepid avant-jazz practitioners of the 21st century. Following the critical accolades that the first two Coin Coin chapters have thus far received, the past year has been marked by further career-defining recognition for her body of iconoclastic work: Roberts was a recipient of both the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts and the Daisy Duke Impact Award in 2014. Roberts has long employed the phrase “panoramic sound quilting” to describe the process surrounding her Coin Coin work. The third chapter in her Coin Coin series finds Roberts implementing this metaphor most explicitly, constructing a sound art tapestry from field recordings, loop and effects pedals, and spoken word recitations, alongside her saxophone and singing voices. Coin Coin Chapter Three: river run thee could arguably be considered first and foremost a vocal work, and notwithstanding its experimental and esoteric structure, a deeply narrative work as well.

21 demos and home recordings of unreleased pop, folk and country songs from his vast catalog. While much critical and popular affection for Russell’s music has come about well after his untimely death from AIDS in 1992, many fellow artists believed in his genius and were drawn to collaborate with him during his lifetime. The legendary producer John Hammond (Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen) recorded Russell on several occasions; a number of these recordings will finally heard on Love Is Overtaking Me. So, too, will songs recorded with various incarnations of The Flying Hearts, a group formed by Russell and Brooks whose shifting lineup included, by turns, Jerry Harrison, Rhys Chatham, Jon Gibson, Peter Gordon and Peter Zummo as well as Larry Saltzman and David Van Tieghem. Several other Russell projects are represented on Love Is Overtaking Me, including The Sailboats, Turbo Sporty and Bright & Early.Compiled from over eight hours of material, three years in the making, Love Is Overtaking Me reaches back further to Russell’s first compositions from the early `70s and spans forward to his very last recordings, made at home in 1991. Chris Taylor of Grizzly Bear contributed mixing, restoration and editing to the album, whose tracks were selected by Audika’s Steve Knutson, Ernie Brooks and Russell’s companion, Tom Lee.

Received an 8.8 Best New Music rating from Pitchfork.Liz Harris wrote about the new album: Ruins was made in Aljezur, Portugal in 2011 on a residency set up by Galeria Zé dos Bois. I recorded everything there except the last song, which I did at mother's house in 2004. I?m still surprised by what I wound up with. It was the first time I?d sat still for a few years; processed a lot of political anger and emotional garbage. Recorded pretty simply, with a portable 4-track, Sony stereo mic and an upright piano. When I wasn?t recording songs I was hiking several miles to the beach. The path wound through the ruins of several old estates and a small village. The album is a document. A nod to that daily walk. Failed structures. Living in the remains of love. I left the songs the way they came (microwave beep from when power went out after a storm); I hope that the album bears some resemblance to the place that I was in.

Let's Dance Raw
LP | 2014 | US | Original (Other Music)

Release:2014 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
The album is the follow-up to Sakamoto’s solo debut, the otherworldly folk-pop masterpiece How to Live with a Phantom (2012, Other Music). While How to Live with a Phantom was the first many around the globe knew of Sakamoto, he has long been an icon in his homeland, having long fronted the psychedelic phenomenon Yura Yura Teikoku, a Tokyo-based band that emerged from Koenji’s legendary UFO Club scene and, across their 20-year trajectory, achieved mainstream success throughout the country. Following the group’s break-up in 2010, Sakamoto began working on How to Live with a Phantom, a boldstylistic departure that eschewed Yura Yura Teikokou’s psychedelic freak-outs for a much quieter and harder-to-define sound. From first glimpse of the cover of Let’s Dance Raw, it’s clear that once again, we are entering uncharted territory. The record’s sleeve, painted by Sakamoto, features the artist sitting upon a black throne, a steel guitar resting on his knee like a child being protected from the ominous mushroom cloud of smoke billowing behind him. A grinning skull has replaced Sakamoto’s face. This dichotomy of bright, innocent beauty and subtle perversity is the essence of Let’s Dance Raw, with Sakamoto moving even further from the tough underground power-trio psychedelic rock of his former band. He hinted at the new sound throughout his solo debut, and here the music is blown wide open, with the steel guitar as the unifying force throughout. Sakamoto purchased and learned how to play the instrument just prior to writing and recording Let’s Dance Raw, and it enriches the post-apocalyptic exotica on these ten songs, fusing together the bright and breezy shimmer of Hawaiian slack-key hula melodies, the dusty shuffle of southwestern desert blues, and the space-age bachelor-pad music of postwar suburban dreamers. The result is an album that revisits the soundtracks of musical escapism made popular in postwar American and Japanese cultures—and deftly updates them. It’s all anchored by deep, jazzy grooves straight out of a 1970s AM radio broadcast, and peppered with flourishes of Brazilian and Latin percussion throughout. Atop the music, Sakamoto sings of the human race’s downfall, the weight of the lyrics made contrastingly perverse via duets with robotic vocoder voices and helium-voiced cartoon chipmunks cooing in an unsettling fashion alongside him. While Sakamoto once again handles the bulk of the instrumental duties, faithful drummer and percussionist Yuta Suganuma also returns for this set, as well as bassist AYA, on loan from fellow Japanese psychedelic explorers OOIOO.

To coincide with the 20th anniversary of the original release, we are issuing kranky katalog #001 on vinyl for the first time since 1993, newly remastered and with new artwork. The debut album from LABRADFORD, as well as the premier kranky release, was originally issued in late 1993 to a surprising amount of acclaim as well as a fair bit of confusion. What was one to make of these beatless atmospheres cum pop songs that had little to do with contemporary "indierock" ™. The album was typically lumped into such newly minted sub-genres such as "lo-fi" and "post-rock" even though there was no connection to any such imagined scenes. Lo-fi? You can hear MARK NELSON breathe between vocal lines. Must be the lack of cymbals and hi-hat that accounts for that fallacy. Post-rock? Did that catch-all phrase for disparate musical groups and sounds even imply anything concrete or encompassing? Alas, just another label that quickly became meaningless. What is clearly evident upon listening to the album anew is that this is not a dated or stale work by any means. It could just as likely have been recorded in 2003, or 1983 for that matter, as in 1993. It does not contain any of the markers so typical of pop music that would place it in any time frame, no production touches or instrumental sounds that would identify it as being the product of a specific period. At the very least, Labradford created a timeless work, one that still challenges the listener today. More to the point, they created a masterwork.

Fuzz is Ty Segall (drums / vocals), Charlie Moothart (guitar / vocals) and Roland Cosio (bass). They're heavy rock lifers-three California-bred dudes who have been refining their riffs and getting weird together since high school (which wasn't that long ago, actually). Fuzz was formed a couple years ago as a collaboration between Segall and Moothart, but only recently did the pair have sufficient time to guide the band out of side-project limbo and into a recording studio. Since then, they have released two singles, "This Time I Got a Reason" (Trouble In Mind) and "Sleigh Ride" (In The Red). Around the time of the latter, Cosio joined on bass. They are not dabblers or dilettantes. Fuzz flipped through used bins, hard drives and record collections of the world, seeking out the finest weirdo cuts. The band's self-titled debut LP dives deep, drawing inspiration from the more esoteric reaches of heavy metal pre-history. There are Sabbath and Hendrix nods, obviously, but on "Sleigh Bells" you might also catch a whiff of UK progressive blues business like The Groundhogs, particularly when the song quits its 10/4-time intro and reboots into full-bore choogle. Maybe you'll even glimpse the ghost of Australian guitar legend / sharpie guru Lobby Lloyde sniffing around "Raise." The mood is not light. The songs project a state of perpetual paranoia and eroding mental health. And as it should be, you know? It's a record for the burners. Vinyl includes digital download coupon.

NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!! Night Coercion Into the Company of Witches is the first domestic release by France's mythic NATURAL SNOW BUILDINGS, a band revered in experimental music circles despite self-releasing most of their albums in ridiculously limited runs. The original Night Coercion... CD from 2008 was an edition of only 22 copies, so finally, the intense music that MEHDI AMEZIANE and SOLANGE GULARTE create on these tracks can be widely heard and appreciated. Fans of Popol Vuh raga drones, Flying Saucer Attack distorted bliss, The Dead C's intuitive chaos, and Islaja's oblique folk, take note. Natural Snow Buildings make melodic, orchestrated, droning compositions with layers of guitars, chants, woodwinds, percussive bells, distortion and delay. On Night Coercion Into the Company of Witches, they push to extremes, producing layers of stereophonic sound both nuanced and grandiose. This record is the ideal introduction to the band's sound, building harmonies upon noise upon harmonies, and providing a clear explanation as to why their albums (even the ones that aren't so limited) sell out so immediately upon release. For the Ba Da Bing release of Night Coercion Into the Company of Witches, there are two physical formats. Like the original version, the album is available as a three-CD set, this time at the low price of a single CD release. Additionally, the limited four-LP box set has a new mixing job, done by the band to fit the record's new vinyldom. LP includes a download.

Ad Marginem began life as a collaboration between filmmaker LIAM YATES and MUGSTAR, created outside a traditional framework whereby a filmscore is added to a completed film. Members of the band were equal partners in writing, directing, editing as well as acting; the on screen drama was shaped to complement the musical form. Ad Marginem is both tightly controlled and claustrophobic.; though is not without a supersonic, dark and dense explosiveness, echoing Slint and Pink Floyd. Visually, the stark black and white photography of the cover pays homage to classic world cinema. The entire project (interiors and exteriors) was filmed within a stone's throw of the coast and contrasts post-industrial urban landscapes with some of the most beautiful Merseyside locations: the Sefton coast of Liverpool Bay and Hilbre Island, where the Dee Estuary meets the Irish Sea. A tale of obsession and betrayal, it takes as a theme physical and social marginality: a cult on the margins of society, a man on the margins of the cult. In case you've not heard of them before, Mugstar are an instrumental rock band all the way from Liverpool, influenced by krautrock, Pink Floyd, Neu!, Sonic Youth and Oneida. Edition of 500 copies. UK import.

Like a stone eroded by years in the arroyo, Gun Outfit's enveloping "Westernexpanse" aesthetic of guitar levitations and honky-tonk hexes has become graduallysmoother over time. Their fifth LP ranks as their most brutally beautiful statementyet. Drawing from mythologies both classical and postmodern, Out of Range builds aworld in which Brueghel the Elder, St. Augustine, and the ancient goddess Cybeleride with John Ford, Samuel Beckett, and Wallace Stevens on a Orphic-Gnosticsuicide drive towards the hallucinatory vanishing points of the Southwestern desert, debating the denouement of the decaying American dream. "Dreamers wielding slideguitars. A tradition-warping band, with a punk aesthetic deep at the center anddouble-guitar desert-rock psychedelia at the surface." - The New York Times "it hasthe blue-sky sensibility of a soul-searching road trip. You want to get lost inside of it,to turn it up on a road trip that lasts for weeks." - Pitchfork RIYL Steve Gunn, TerryAllen, Promised Land Sound, Chance, Amps for Christ, Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth,Waylon Jennings, Lee Hazlewood, Blaze Foley, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, KurtVile.TRACKL

The best musical partners play as if there is a direct connection between their brains. Steve Gunn (guitars) and John Truscinski (drums, synths) possess that certain ESP / telepathy / majick. "Bay Head" is their third duo album and it presents a showcase for their audio alchemy. Gunns playing, while always truly exploratory and aimed for the stars, takes on a vast and expansive reach while anchored by the foil of Truscinskis textured and expressive backbeat. "Bay Head" further establishes Gunn and Truscinski's place on the ultimate shortlist of top shelf audio duos alongside Bull and Higgins, Eno and Fripp, Vega and Rev, and Coltrane and Ali.

Since their blown-out 2011 debut Hollandaze, Toronto trio Odonis Odonis hascontinued to push their sound further into the depths of post-apocalypticexperimentation. Following 2016's foreboding Post Plague, No Pop is the band'sstarker, more dance-floor-friendly fourth LP. Executed with precision, every soniccomponent of No Pop commands attention. Stripping down instrumentation to ahandful of synths and an electronic drum kit, the band worked quickly to write andrecord, bringing demos and improvised takes into the studio and completing therecording process over the course of three days. The result is a focused blend ofhard-hitting industrial, techno, and noise - but each track on No Pop is never justone of those elements. Pulsing rhythms lay the ground for textural soundscapesmasterfully woven together to create a palpable sense of doom that is thick andsatisfying. Taking its name from the anti-commercial No Pop movement, whichinfers that there "is no expira tion date on music nor is it limited by geographic orregional boundaries," No Pop is raw with emotion that's elevated by deftproduction. Each hypnotizing meditation captures an uncomfortably honestcynicism with a brush of humor, emphasized by sparse vocals that taunt thecurrent dystopia of technology, human emptiness and the mundane. No Pop is thesoundtrack of a sinking ship, and we're all happily aboard to go down with it.
