Steven Soderbergh’s take on Stanislaw Lem’s influential sci-fi tome Solaris was incredibly polarizing at the time. Some didn’t want to see it simply because it starred heart-throb George Clooney in what is essentially a mostly solo role, some didn’t appreciate it in light of legendary Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky’s overtly spiritual take on the same book. Soderbergh says of Martinez's pivotal role and his score, "I relied on it not only to unify the film emotionally, but to import actual narra-tive information." Martinez himself describes it as "one of the few soundtracks of mine that I can still stand to listen to.

I also think it was a score that made the greatest contribution to the film for which it was written." Described by BBC Music as "A brooding slow, meditative work" and a musical journey that "leaves the listener floating free" by Soundtrack.net, "Solaris' is an evocative and highly seductive score that still fully resonates with the listener more than a decade after it was first released.

Those that did manage to take it in would have noticed on thing in particular though – composer Cliff Martinez‘s haunting and deeply influential soundtrack. Percussive, but anchored with a slow, deeply affecting synthesized bass line throughout, the soundtrack served as a nudge in the right direction for drone-lovers and ambient types, and still sounds fresh even now. It’s hardly surprising then that Portishead’s Geoff Barrow has had the good sense to make sure it finally gets pressed to wax through his Invada imprint.

Taking inspiration from the 1969 French adventure book of the same name, Papillon explores the sonic interzones between dream and nightmare. Through the use of augmented field recordings, Papillon uses the ‘exotic’ jungle as the starting point to develop a dense and evocative sound where ethnic recordings, impromptu synth jams, modular synthesis and foley art effects come together to create a quasi-mystical crackpot mix of esoteric visions, near death experiences, shamanism, fever deliriums and lucid dreaming.

Named after the road signs on the local bypass, the Derbyshire band combined elements of folk musics from across the United Kingdom. Beginning as an acoustic trio, and later adding a rhythm section and the vocals of Jayne Marsden, they began to expand their sound, taking in elements of progressive rock and combining catchy vocal tunes with virtuosic instrumentals, including a synthesizer. Their self-titled first album was recorded in 1982-83 in Dave Pegg's (Fairport Convention) Woodworm Studios. Will appeal to fans of Vashti Bunyan and Linda Perhacs.

French poet and chameleonic vocalist Brigitte Fontaine's career spans over four decades. Only a few years before her 1968 debut, Brigitte Fontaine Est...Folle, she moved to Paris to become an actress and took her prodigiously mature voice into the studio. Rich in the drama she brought to theater, Fontaine synthesized chanson and world music, which eventually won her international acclaim as a performer and collaborator with a variety of artists from around the world. On Est...Folle, Fontaine takes flight over conductor JEAN CLAUDE VANNIER's brilliant arrangements. Vannier is in fine form, using what would become his trademark stylings: lush strings, taut rhythms culled from across the globe and a healthy dose of whimsy. Fontaine is adventurous and multi-dimensional with sophisticated lyrics, poignant melodies and enthralling delivery. Such artful handling of meter and rhyme (or lack thereof) is rare in pop song. Far from the era's ye-ye phenomenon, but never fully removed from its traditions, Est...Folle is an essential link in French pop music, exuberantly pushing the genre into more conceptual and experimental sounds.

Phill Niblock has pushed the boundaries of sound and visual art for over 40 years. While dutifully producing experimental films and curating multi-media loft performances in New York’s 1960s avant-garde circles, Niblock developed a composition technique informed by American minimalists such as Tony Conrad and La Monte Young. His music consists of long instrumental tones, closely pitched together to create beat patterns and multi-tracked into dense layers.

Nothin to Look At Just a Record, originally released on esteemed 20th century / jazz label India Navigation in 1982, is Niblock’s recording debut and often cited as his masterpiece. “A Trombone Piece,” the first of two side-long tracks, was recorded by Richard Lainhart and Richard Kelly (both music innovators in their own right) at SUNY Albany in the mid-’70s. Breathing pauses from instrumentalist James Fulkerson’s trombone were spliced out to unravel the drones spatially, rather than according to metered rhythm. The overall effect is mesmerizing and beautifully envelops the listener with each tonal subtlety.

To celebrate Niblock’s 80th birthday, Superior Viaduct is honored to present the first-time vinyl reissue of Nothin to Look At Just a Record, a high-water mark in 20th century music and listed as #5 on Alan Licht’s Minimal Top Ten.

During his 5 years with The Ramones, Richie performed over 500 shows around the world, wrote a handful of the band’s best loved songs, including the hit “Somebody Put Something In My Drink”, and stepped up to the mic for vocal duties on “(You) Can’t Say Anything Nice”.

In 2011 he spoke about his close friendship with Joey Ramone, while showing his support during the presentation of an honorary “Lifetime Achievement” Grammy Award.

On October 8th, Richie will once again take to the drum kit for the release of his first solo album, ENTITLED. He’s joined by an all-star band that includes Tommy Bolan (Warlock), Clare Misstake (Antiproduct), and Ben “Wah” Reagan (The Feederz). Fresh off Australian and South American tours, Richie and company will embark on an extensive US and European tour in support of this release.

Sarah Neufeld is a violinist and composer based in Montréal, Canada. “Some Say” is a recently discovered song from the archive of Arthur Russell. The track was produced and mixed by Arthur in 1985 for a solo project of Steven Hall’s that was originally intended for release on Rough Trade Records. Legendary disco producer Bob Blank recorded and engineered the project at his Connecticut-based studio. “Some Say” features Arthur’s classic cello basslines, cracking boom bap drums and Steven’s floating vocals and synth pads. In true Arthur fashion, the song abrubtly stutters, slinks and lurches halfway through for Steven to complete his Buddhist pop mantra.

The B-side features an extended rework of “Some Say” by Pocketknife using Arthur’s BOSS Dr. Rhythm DR-55 drum machine.

Amidst countless eras, labels, and line up shifts, founding member/singer, Dwid Hellion continues to carry the band forward, forming his own label, the "Holy Terror Empire", and becoming as iconic within the extreme music underworld as David Koresh, Jim Jones, and Pol Pot are to population control. This is the third record in the "Vol.2" batch of formerly cassette-only reissues from this legendary lo-fi band, which continues to be highly influential as evident by the critical claim from the first three record from the band, rereleased in spring of 2011.

This is one of the many CLEANERS FROM VENUS formerly cassette only releases. "Songs for a Fallow Land" was released in 1985.

One of Newell's chief problems at this time, apart from constant money shortages, was finding musical collaborators who shared his own skewed pop vision.

The absolute opposite of a musical perfectionist, the founder Cleaner believed that great pop was to be had by doing things quickly, in slapdash fashion and by "fumbling around in the dark in search of happy accidents".

You know how record nerds are. They’ll gladly tell you that a dawdling Moldovian choir of 70 year old grandmothers is the next brick in your psychfunksplosion journey. But Shahram Shabpareh is the real thing. Colorful arrangements of blurting horns, evil bass grooves, cheesy organs & thick strata of overlapping percussion instruments going off like microwave popcorn.

As the leader of an Iranian 60s garage band, the Rebels, and later a 70s solo singer, Shabpareh was never happy just tossing a few moves from Abba in front of whatever was on the local charts already. He wrote & recorded hard rock & funky piano riffs that were built bulldozer tough & would’ve stuck out in an American trailer park or a London pub just as easily as they did in Tehran. Not that he wasn’t afraid to put someone else’s idea to good use, as he certainly makes superb use of the Kinks’ chords from ‘You Really Got Me’. It’s more that Shahram’s rock cojones have caused him to make blistering music again & again over the years, with little regard for where it comes from.

Here’s a well-deserved compilation of his best tracks, with insert/booklet with liner notes, and 180gr vinyl.
