Early in 2014, Copenhagen’s Kenneth Bager asked electronic wizard and remix entrepreneur Ruf Dug if he would make an album for his acclaimed Balearic imprint Music For Dreams. That summer, Ruf Dug headed off to spend three months on the island of Guadeloupe in the French Caribbean. Seizing the opportunity to live out his own Compass Point fantasy, he put together a portable studio that would fit into a suitcase - two half-rack synthesizers, a couple of effects units, his laptop and a 4-track cassette recorder. He set up the studio in the spare bedroom in a rented villa and spent the next 12 weeks watching the sun set and making the album. All tracks were written and recorded in Guadeloupe, with Nev Cottee beaming in vocals and guitar parts for a couple of the tracks direct from the heart of Mancunia, hooking into the powerful and long-standing musical relationship between Manchester and that most famous of sunset islands - Ibiza. This is music not only for sunsets, but also for late-night smuggling adventures; for tropical storms and rum-soaked afternoons; for pirates, playboys and people like you and me.The end result hopefully transports you to an island in the sun: neither Guadeloupe nor Ibiza particularly, but rather that island of the imagination, one we all escape to from time to time, no matter where we find ourselves. Welcome to ‘Island’ - the nine track debut album by Ruf Dug on Copenhagen’s Music For Dreams.

That cyberpunk chameleon of styles, Manchester’s pride and dancefloor master Ruf Dug is back on wax on Copenhagen’s Music For Dreams. Following up the first 12” of remixes that came out last year, we once again re-visit the island life of monsieur Ruffy and his debut full length album “Island” (recorded during a sojourn on Guadeloupe). First up we have Italians on the mix. Hi-jacking Ruffy’s tribute to Wally Badarou, Leo Mas and Fabrice opt to do their own thing: which is churning out a bouncing house belter of their own that bears little resemblance to the original lo-fi synth reverie.Closer to the original then, is fellow Mancunian Andi Hanley’s take on the same track. Adding sparse percussion and and a simple but effective drum beat, this take seems to simply be an uncovered second half of the original, where it finally takes off for the dancefloor.“Mangrove Dub” is reworked by fresh-on-the-scene Aussie producer Tropical Hi-Fi who creates a brilliant version full of moist ambient textures and reverb-heavy dub treatments. At last but definitely not least, Seahawks turns the whimsical hippie folk ballad “Le Rayon Vert” into a more intense and neatly dressed affair, focusing on the instrumental parts and lifting aside vocalist Nev Cotte’s contribution to the original. Still with a mindful of tropical dreams and the ocean shore close at hand, but in a more introvert Vini Reilly kind of way.Essential package.

Ruf Dug’s debut album ‘Island’ was released to much acclaim in 2015 on Kenneth Bager’s Music For Dreams imprint. It sold out its first promo run within weeks and scored top spots in many ‘Best Of Year’ reviews. Now for 2016, Ruffy has picked some of his favourite artists to rework his tracks and this is the result. Ruf Dug says... "When Kenneth asked me to make the album he always had the plan that we would get some remixes done of the tracks. From an early point in the album I was thinking about who I'd love to remix the tracks, and this represents the first part of some serious wish fulfillment!“PEAKING LIGHTS' music I adore; I had the luck to play with Aaron a while ago and we got on very well. It was a total thrill when he agreed to do the remix. I made 'Speedboat' in part as a tribute to (i.e. ripoff of!) the PL sound so there is some very nice symmetry to the remix.“AL BREADWINNER is an incredible Dub producer from Stockport, not far from my house at all. He has an enviable all-analog hardware studio and is constantly producing dubs. He was the very first person on my list to do remixes - 'Rasta Beach' is the most Reggae-ish track on there and to hear it after it's been through his rig is really something.“2814 have emerged this year - a duo who I still haven't met in real life, they transformed the Vaporwave landscape earlier year with their debut album, showcasing incredible compositional tunes. Here they have taken 'Tendacayou' from the hilltop spa and dropped it firmly in a dark cyber dystopia, and it sounds all the better for it.“K-BAG is the man who makes it all happen, the man with the master plan. He sent me a mail and asked for the parts to Dominica a while back. He's taken Dominica and turned it into the ultimate sunset soundtrack... from Cafe Del Mar to the Louisiana museum, this is one to send out over the waves when the sky is turning orange...”Limited vinyl - don’t sleep!
