Get Closer

Release:2017 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Here we are again! Courtesy of Valerie Dore. Numero due in the Super Sound Singles series on Running Back continues on the re-issue/update tip of inexpensive records. Big in the charts in 1985, the Italian queen of “romantic dance” made her second single “Get Closer” a clairvoyant poem about… errr… life and love: “when the world is running down - get closer"! Think stonewashed jeans, endless summers on Italian beaches, boats coming back to the shore. Remixed by fellow country men Tiger & Woods, “Get Closer” gets sandblasted into our modern times and the necessary treatment to be the peak- and night time hug fest, it’s always supposed to be. Add a run out tool by DJ Oyster and a gentle DJ-friendly edit by Gerd Janson of the original to the billboard. And always remember: changing your spell can save you.

Lonely Planet

Release:2016 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
The eye of the storm: welcome to Tornado Wallace’s debut album! The accumulation of about four years of work, with tracks written in Berlin and Melbourne, ‘Lonely Planet’ is nothing like you may have expected from the Australian expat. No stranger to fans and followers of ESP Institute, Beats in Space and Music From Memory’s sister Label Second Circle, Tornado Wallace’s strain of releases so far merged functionality with a musical playfulness that led him to find himself as one of the producer’s behind José Padilla’s International Feel album. Here, he leaves the needs of the dance floor behind in order to create a magical mystery tour de trance into his and our inner jungle. How about some references? New Age sounds meet new wave melodies, Grace Jones runs into the Dire Straits at Compass Point, while a Korg Mini Pops and a Roland CR78 make amends for Sly & Robbie’s absence, Michael Mann pictures Joseph Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’, Robert Rauschenberg tries his luck at naturalism and an imagined Wally Badarou echoes through all of it. Sandwiched between the title track and the yearning beauty of the album’s final point ‘Healing Feeling’, you get all of that as well as collaborations with and contributions of NO ZU, David Hischfelder and the voice of Sui Zhen on ‘Today’, who would easily make Anna Domino take her proverbial hat off. Tornado Wallace created an album that supersedes the requirements and expectations of a debut. Like a lost Island Records or a never released Made to Measure album, ‘Lonely Planet’ soundtracks notions and ideas that recall the nostalgic future in the past as much as it looks ahead.

Being selfish, is one of the good things about running your own label. If you please, you can just try and re-release that certain record that you always wanted for yourself, but never could get your hand on it. Now, you can just edit it the way you always wanted it to be (oh, those fade-outs…) and press it up. This is one of these occasions. When Kalk (the collaborative project of Philippe Heinen and Joffrey Becker) was released on Julien Briffaz' label Brif in 1999, I just had started to DJ out at a Club in Darmstadt (the late Café Kesselhaus) and the restrained, yet punchy house tracks symbolized what I liked about deep house back then: a mellow alternative to the BPM hunt and rigid attitude in mainstream techno, while not losing itself in chin-stroking wisdom or pesky noodling. It seemed that there weren't too many around with the same desire. Otherwise "Akasha" wouldn't have remained a diamond in disguise and not what Morgan Geist so aptly named an "unclassic". By his definition, that is: an old by and large forgotten record that would have deserved to be hit. If you take discogs as an indicator, more and more people start to think so though. Here is your second chance to obtain a copy of the spirit of Kalk. Mildly edited and restored in the best human-possible way. Mind you, it's old house music from days of Yore. If you look for the production values of a Phil Collins, please go somewhere else. DJ GJ

Younger Rebinds is a new project and imaginary band by the inimitable and unstoppable Benny Rodrigues. Maybe best-known for his Rod moniker and releases on Klockworks, Rodrigues embodies and keeps the candour, spirit and curiosity that made techno music stand out in its start-up years - and that's exactly what we have here. The "Retro 7 Ep" makes the most of the classic 707 drum machine, gnarly synths, ambient soundscapes, pianos and organs. Done in a way that is as much new wave, as it is electronic disco. Spread out over a double-pack with eight tracks (8!, get it?), the Younger Rebinds hit the sweet spot between vintage DJ Hell aesthetics, Sterac Electronics and Trevor Jackson's Metal Dance dogma, if its choir would be muted. Loud pressing and hypnotic artwork included. Please don't look at it for more than 5 minutes.

Running Back will mark its fifteenth anniversary with the release of its first label compilation, the Running Back Mastermix, in September. As befitting the celebration of a landmark year in the life of Gerd Janson’s widely adored imprint, Janson has invited one of house music’s original & greatest proponents of the Mastermix, NYC’s Tony Humphries, to curate and mix the CD & digital editions of the compilation, accompanied by an unmixed double-LP which features a handful of the compilations rare & exclusive cuts. The Mastermix is a timely reminder of what has made Running Back endure and remain at the top of many house music fans’ favourite label lists for over a decade. Beginning with Todd Terje’s blockbuster 'Ragysh’ and traversing tracks from across the label’s history, it includes contributions from long time label regulars alongside more recent additions and reminders of some of RB’s best reissues. Label mainstays Tiger & Woods, Matthew Styles, Redshape and Leon Vynehall all appear, alongside Mr G, Paul Woolford and recent breakthrough artists Shan, Jex and Roy Camanchero. Tiger & Woods’s 'Don’t Hesitate’ appears on vinyl for the first time, while the Dixon edit of Precious System’s anthem 'The Voice From Planet Love’ will be available on wax again after only appearing on a super limited 12″ run the first time around. The choice of Tony Humphries to mix the compilation is a significant one.

Say what you wanna say, but you have to give Strahil Velchev this: the man's a powerhouse. Recording and playing live under the KiNK alias, he went on to become one of finest purveyor's of funk in techno and house. What it is, by definition, ain't exactly clear. And that is the beauty of it. KiNK's music is unifying in the best possible way. Channeling the spirit and feeling of a time where it didn't really matter who the faces behind the music were, KiNK plays with the elements of genres and sub-genres as if the future of it all is still wide-open. At the same time it could be accused of retro-fetishism, as much as the Pope himself is infallible. The pure need to recreate moments, feelings and experience - rather than carbon copies of existing designs - was what started KiNK's production work. Hailing from Bulgaria, it was nearly impossible to get your hands on all the records and music that fed into a system of raves, clubs and record shops that seemed far away from Sofia, and financially it might as well have meant another galaxy. Wanting to DJ without having access to the tracks that spun the carousel meant that you had to create them yourselves. So, here we go with a private bootlegger gone public mastermind and one of the loudest voices in house, techno and beyond. From KiNK's early productions with Neville Watson to his smash-hit for Ovum, a cerebral album for Macro, tons of remixes & tracks and his mind-bending live act, Playground seems to take all that into a blender.

Fort Romeau’s second outing for Running Back is another exercise in dance floor synthesis. Starting where its predecessor “Saku” left us with the green shimmer of a Fairlight, “Emulators” - you might have guessed it - greets us with the grey realism of an E-MU II. Purchased first by none other than Stevie Wonder, immortalised in Ferris Bueller’s ode to absenteeism and the original loon sampler, there is nothing this machine cannot do for you - the same goes for Fort Romeau. His disco-informed, trance-induced tracks that usually end on a high note, are elevated by ambient soundscapes that end with a bang and sugarcoat your warm-up slots, while bird-heavy bonus beats that stand up on their own or help you out in the mix. Nice like a stick of liquo-rice.

Third time is a charm. The Analogue Acid Project by Todd Osborn and Tadd Mullinix resulted in two records in 2005 and 2006 that excelled at the fabrication of gritty acid jak tracks Now, Todd N Tadd alias TNT aka the dynamite duo finally returns. Their third outing and first one on Running Back, is a detonative reunion of old and new friends. With two previously unreleased beat tracks on one side plus carefully tailored reissues of Hotness (from the blue record) and Beat This House (from the red record), you get a box of dynamite sticks in various sizes for different situations. More than ten years later and still as explosive. Fire in the hole!

Remixes By Call Super + Fett BurgerRing, ring! Hot on the heels of the transcendental and mystical “Vibe Telemetry” long-player of the man like Telephones, we proudly present: Vibe Remixes. Some of you might notice the irony between the lines. A producer who goes by the name of Call Super is remixing an artist known as Telephones. But, we rather rivet you on his 8:59 long skippy dub journey that recalls (pun intended) an atmosphere that could be found in the space between Smith & Mighty, the LTJ Bukem of his youth, Italian house records, British Balearics and bass affine music (of whatever providence). A magical mystery. But we don’t hang up here. DJ Fett Burger is treating the other side and only he himself knows how he made what he did. 14:51 min of almost every style ever invented in the scope of house music. Designed for people blessed with an everlastingly short attention span and DJs on the lookout for a toilet break and a coffee break or whichever break, it leaves its listener speechless. And: it’s so much fun that once it’s over, you want to redial Fett Burger’s number immediately.

In times where a compilation of 12-inch bangers passes as an album, Telephones "Vibe Telemetry” opts for a different approach. Without being a departure from his 12″s for Sex Tags Ufo, Full Pupp and yours truly or his brilliant remix work for José Padilla and Vangelis Katsoulis, the Norwegian producer from Bergen who calls Berlin his home, hones sound, skills and aesthetics on his debut long-player. "Vibe Telemetry” is inspired by the pure feeling of listening to house, disco and techno, prior to knowing what it actually was: ambiguous, euphoric, mystical and melancholic. Sonic and physical experiences, which names and origins were yet to be discovered.

The inimitable LD Nero with his first outing for Running Back. Best-known for his merits on Trelik and a poetic sound which is distinctively his own, LD Nero immerses himself in a rare breed of deep house music that isn’t classicist, yet dateless, emotional but not kitschy, and most of all meditative without drowsiness. Devoid of any second thoughts, these are three tracks made for those wee hours in the morning that may never end.

Two years ago I played at Studio 9 in Vilnius, Lithuania. The following day I missed my flight home and ended up spending an extra day, which gave me a chance to explore the city with my friend Linus, who took me to the Contemporary Art Centre. It was there I spotted a book named ‘Rojus’, that Linus told me translated as ‘Paradise’. The word and striking cover of the book stuck in my mind. A few days after returning home, I turned on to a National Geographic documentary named ‘Designed To Dance’, explaining the courtship rituals of Birds Of Paradise. As I watched, i jokingly began drawing similarities between these birds’ attempts to captivate and impress the opposite sex with dance, and the way strangers try to attract one another in clubs and interact on the dance floor. This gave me the idea of creating a record of functional club music, sequenced as if it were a club night, from doors to closing, using samples of these Birds Of Paradise and their habitat. Thus, Rojus. Leon Vynehall 2016

Debut release from Brian Ring. Raised in Cork on a diet of US-American house music and disco oscillating between Sylvester and Glenn Underground, while sneaking into clubs underaged (see Sir Henry's for further reference), Ring was baptised by by David Mancuso and Theo Parrish in London (thank you Easyjet), while his record collection grew and grew. Living in Berlin now, an epiphany in some remote parts of Australia (it was 42 degrees!) resulted in him following his own path in making music. So, here we go: The “Movements EP” brings together Mike Dunn (sample has been cleared, folks), Timothy Leary and Tee Scott, puts disco roller skates on heavy-legged deep house and is most of all as much fun as it is sincere. All in a certain way that is personally his.
