Roman Flügel - Anima EP
Roman Flügel
Anima EP
12" | 2021 | EU | Original (Running Back)

Release:2021 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
By now, Roman Flügel needs no introduction. Neither the man, nor the music. We will try to describe the latter anyway. Precursory to his new LP Eating Darkness, Anima emblazes the manifoldness and elegancy of his sound. Starting off with D.I.S.C.O., Flügel links the unredeemed promise and euphoria of last year’s Garden Party to the present (including a dub version for the right balance of happiness. As the man himself so eloquently put it: „I’ve tried to create a track that reflects the past from a slightly melancholic but still enthusiastic state of mind. The past 30 years of my life have been highly influenced by DJing, traveling and producing club music of many sorts. That life is at least temporarily on hold and it might not be the same after the pandemic. The music is also trying to reflect the colourfulness, happiness, beauty and drama that is part of nightlife. The track uses tiny bits and riffs from an endless pool of Disco tracks. The production sounds rather clean and synthetic, as if a Robot is the one who remembers everything that was. “ Consequently, working as an epilogue as well as the prologue to the aforementioned album, are Anima and Eating Darkness.

A chirp, a wine and a gurgle are the sounds that make the song of swallow. You won’t find any of them on here though. The third installment of this sampler series features well-rounded dance and prance material instead. Four artists, four hits. Berlin duo Cyrk pay tribute to their favorite Sunday parties with Italo Blade. Barely hidden by its name, it cuts right through any heart of stone with aural infatuation and elation. Portraying the best moment in someone’s life after a gig at the infamous Papaya Playa Project, Smallville records associate Snad, delivers a skippy and irresistible MPC jam that makes one want to whistle along. The baroque effect and element of Voon’s music is a given. The Italian duo made that clear with Rose in Japan and is able to repeat the trick with Brando. Like Rondo Veneziano at a rave, it’s larger than life and happily jumping over the inhibition gate of restraint. Finally, Lukas Lehmann takes the boiling pot off the stove. Juno Cuts A Caper is an ode to synthesizer number six of the renowned Roland series and a masterclass in simmering down. All in all: fun, fun, fun.-

Roman Flügel is a magician. This statement is far from being a hyperbole. Just put the needle down on any record – I mean any! – of his ( collaborations included) since the early nineties and see for yourself: none of them are without that special effect. The magic works instantly. And as the thing with magic goes: it’s challenging to explain it. But I guess that is what makes it magic. Eating Darkness is the title of his newest spell. Affected by the fundamental shock that any system got in 2020 – but not the result thereof – it is an album that could absorb it – as its name might suggest. Music and nightlife work hand in hand as escapism and as anchors or as the undercoat of social interactions. They enable people to deal with hardships as well as the burden and the joy of life. That is the starting point and hope of Eating Darkness: the outlook and invitation to enrich each and everyone’s existence. Bound to the single LP format and reminiscent of a time with format limitations, the nine tracks are testament to Flügel’s weakness for the art of pop music with the use of little and especially short motifs. Furthermore equipped with a clear instrumentation and without any camouflage, Eating Darkness corresponds to his idea of a virtual band. As it happens, the opener is called The Magic Briefcase. That sits not only well with my first sentence, but pretty much embodies the album and Roman Flügel’s apparatus in an alternative title: Crystal clear sounds and melodies bounce on and off the dance floor, living room and club are pulled together and transcendental moments take turns with the tangibility of reality. After all, that is how a real magician allures you.

Genre:Electronic / Dance
Reprise! One Swallow Doesn’t Make A Summer Part 2 is the follow up to a Various Artists sampler for a hypothetical mixtape (still hasn’t been made). This time, the international cast consists of (in order of appearance): Llewellyn, Fred Asquith, John Noseda and Lipelis X AC. The plot: Dance music in its broadest and loosest form and at its best without too many sub-genre flags. „Synergy Bar“ by Llewellyn is the starting point. An ode to a well-known place in Berlin, it was conceived there as well as floor-tested by DJ GJ and oozes that special Sunday sweat from every single pore. Fittingly, „Please Hold The Line“ by Yogtze follows next. Remixed by Fred Asquith purely because he thought he had too, it puts party make-up on the originals pretty face. Flip around for John Noseda’s power house trip „Spiral Galaxy“. Imagine a New Romantic cover band being mangled by an Acid House (the philosophy, not the 303) DJ. Last but not least, „Central Store“ by Lipelis X AC closes this chapter, with some bittersweet heartbreak rave in very slow motion. Cry, dance, cry some more, but don’t stop dancing!

We live in a dance music world that constantly cannibalizes itself. Since something that once was only a sound and a feeling, got named, re-named and categorized, it became easy to reference a time, a place or a movement in a record. But: if you wanna bake a great cake, you got to stick to the recipe. Alan Dixon’s La Danza EP follows that line very well.

Let’s go out! A suggestion that might sound like an absurdity in current times, but feels like the true promise of Bella Boo’s debut EP on Running Back. The Studio Barnhus affiliate refines and elevates her bright, genial and dissenting take on deep house into something greater than its parts. What was supposed to be an album with features and collaborations was turned into an introspective solo-practice by Covid-19 and subsequently into this rich 8-track-EP. A writer’s block and the pitfalls of the aforementioned deep house genre were overcome with the help of Axel Boman’s knowledge of football philosophy and a 140bpm tempo advice. So, everything fell in its right place.

Pianos, Pianos and more Pianos! Alan Dixon’s overdue return to Running Back evolves around the black and white keys. Starting out with the main mix of “Acid Drop", Dixon unites the groan of a TB 303 with the life-affirming principle of a piano breakdown. Would have sounded as good on the floors of Ibiza’s or Riccione’s roofless clubs of yesteryear, as it would in club basement’s of today (temporarily defunct) and did in Gerd Janson’s Bali Boiler Room. Please turn to the “Swimming Mix’. to lighten the load or for the mellow after-the-rave moments on inflatable mattresses. Complemented by “Poye Loco", the piano theme gets a down tempo treatment that is cut out of the same cloth as espadrilles or the tunes that DJ Harvey likes to describe as “adult dance music". Finally, “Rudy’s Spector” closes the gap between a Ryuichi Sakamoto soundtrack and a Style Council ballad (while Paul Weller is on a tea break). DJs and home listeners unite! Don’t forget: there is always a summer somewhere! Artwork by Gassius.

It’s no big secret: The elements of trance music have always played a vital part in the music of Prins Thomas. In fact, there are scholars who argue that these stylistic attributes were the ramp that shot his disco into space. But let’s not pour hot coffee onto the cold one. When the king they call Prins sent a loose bunch of tracks to Gerd Janson to get some sort of feedback, it was like an epiphany: the calling for the missing link between “Logic Trance” compilations of yesteryear and the honey for the strobe light bees of today has finally been answered. Naturally, it’s not all ice cannons and glow sticks, endorphins and euphoria. The private and poetic Prins stands just one step behind the sweaty one - in alphanumeric track list order. If there has ever been something like thinking-(wo)mans-trance, this is the album for it.

You cannot say Nu Groove without saying Burrell. The seminal New York House label that existed from 1988 until 1992 was at the helm of a sound that was as much traditional as it was transitional. Since the closure of the Paradise Garage in 1987 and before the „NYC House sound“ was well-defined and fenced, Nu Groove was a kaleidoscope and an amalgamation of everything that informed it until then: uptempo r&b, reggae, dub, disco, freestyle, techno, jazz, and the sound that was embossed by Larry Heard in Chicago that was so well picked up in the Big Apple, you name it. Ronald and Rheji Burrell provided its basis, first floor and roof. But that story has already been told by our dear friends from Rush Hour, including its most important chapters. But we are going to tell a new one. Rheji Burrell presents N.Y. House’N Authority & The Utopia Project. Twelve tracks split over two EPs on Running Back. Named „Out of Body Experience“ and „The ’V’EP“, it features all new music that feels like modern garments cut out of a classic cloth. Almost as if the Nu Groove would have never stopped. And that it is - at the risk of self-praise - all that old or new fans and also we could hope for. Two EPs full of deep-that-doesn’t rhyme-with-sleep house music, has simple, yet clever arrangements, features jazzy sounds, but snappy drums, merry melodies and glossy grooves. An overall joy to listen or dance to. The difference in both EPs is for the Burrell-die-hards and Nu-Groove-scientists to decide.

Roman Flügel’s debut on Running Back under his given name (Roman IV doesn’t count) is a wonderful confirmation of his outstanding position in the past, present and future of electronic music. Needless to mention all his merits (or monikers for that sake) and excessive in almost any style, „Garden Party“ highlights his competence in the dance hall and sees Flügel in a jovial mood. Presented by someone who knows the roots of it all, you can hear and envision traces of disco, stories of Manchester’s Hacienda, memories of the night life in Frankfurt as well as the reflections in and of US-American mirror balls. But simultaneously, the rich content here also shows the blossoms of the seed, if one avoids the danger of retromania. This is serious fun and as uplifting as a garden party should be. Or based loosely on the creator’s thoughts: if ABC’s blue-eyed soul stems from punk and new wave, Flügel’s „Look of Love“ is a direct result of more than 25 years of kick drums

Circulating as a digital dub plate for more than a year on selected USB-sticks, it’s finally available: Butch & C.Vogt’s remix-not-remix (i.e. cover version) of Andy Gibbs’ „Desire“. Cut, spliced and modernized, it’s the kind of tailor-made DJ pleasure that only comes along once in a while and needs its own record shop section: Blue-eyed R&B house. Made to please and evoking those unifying and uplifting dance-floor moments that are due to Andy Gibbs’ lyrics („we may be big or small or…“) and spot-on production work. Butch has been known to hit the bulls-eye (see „Dope“ or „Countach“ for further reference) and together with his studio partner C.Vogt, this is an especially inspired outcome. Enjoy a 45rpm cut, backed up by drum, dubs and vocal tools on the flip side. And always remember: we may be young or old or in between, but together we can learn to grow.

How do you go on after a feast like „The Division“ - especially if it included a main course like Neutron Dance? You don’t! And you don’t even have to try. But like with any great meal, one can do magic with the leftovers (see chop suey, stew or goulash for further reference). In any case, Krystal Klear doesn’t need to worry about that. Having cracked the DNA code of „dance music“ on his first EP for Running Back, this double-A-side-follow-up-single feels alive, floats upstream and fires on all cylinders. While Euphoric Dreams is the musical incarnation of an Alexander Shulgin formula (your spine gets tingled all the way including a wonderfully prolonged break down) or the scoring of the proverb that „at the bottom of patience one finds heaven“ and „happiness is just around the bend“.

Now, the aptly titled third album of Frankfurt’s prime export regarding all things melodic, teenaged and synthesized, intensifies, condenses and hones the sound, he has been developing for years: a topical take on classic dance and 80ies pop figures, disco music in a closet (Lauer is still in denial), singing arpeggios, android choirs, beautiful bass lines and sometimes the apparitional architecture of house music.

Johannes Volk (Exploration, Axis) delivers a debut EP for Running Back that is like a Swiss knife. Five tracks moving within the boundaries of techno music and many times well beyond those. The title track yields the way in an electric drill manner, before new wave techno, piano house and Italo tropes meets beaming electro and even a slick homage to the man referred to as the purple one. It’s hard to imagine all of that without Volk’s upbringing in the tropic of Frankfurt’s techno legacy. Owing as much to Detroit as to Depeche Mode, it is what it is and you hopefully still just can’t get enough of it.

Here we have him debuting on Running Back with four tracks. Traditional, yet refreshing, in equal parts quirky and easy to apply, they show and balance the mechanical genius, deepness and sense of humor, Johanz displayed from day one. “More Love!” is the archetypical electronic disco track that owes as much to Giorgio Moroder creativity as it does to the inventiveness of Japans engineers. “Kickin’ In” is a Patrick Cowley cover with its proceeds going to the San Francisco Aids Foundation. Finally, “Warped Minds” pays tribute to Cowley’s production methods and principals with a “More Cowbell Reprise” thrown in for good measure. Thee, we salute you!

Save for two tracks of the original release, albeit graced with another and previously unavailable mix of „Hemisphere“, all the glory of the future of the past is available again. Remastered, restored and reconfigured via the Running Back Double Copy series. If you need more proof, we want to redirect you to this quote from Discogs user guigui612 from 26. September 2019: „Super good EP. Very diverse, full of deepness and emotions“.

Running Back welcomes Blood Shanti! The Falasha Recordings main man and brother of UK’s living sound system legend Aba-Shanti delivers four breathtaking versions of Feater’s “Time Millionaire” (taken from the album ‚Socialo Blanco") in proper style. It might sound like an odd pairing, but it’s a match made in heaven. Blood Shanti makes it sound as if the song was written for him. Pressed on one 10″ in appropriate design and sleeve (watch out for the lion) it sounds as good as any slice of British reggae ever made (horns and piano included). While the “Main Mix” is everything that lovers rock should be, the three dub versions deconstruct and dismantle the composition more and more as they go along. A modern take with an old-fashioned style of loving.

Benny returns to Running Back with open arms after last year’s Younger Rebinds double EP. Featuring the 4 different flavours of Benny’s various guises, Tim’s Symphony has been a staple of Sven Väth’s & Dixon’s sets over the summer with a single dub plate being cut for Papa Sven after hearing the RB chief playing it. Of course, that means all the ingredients are present for dancefloor madness.

Assertiveness can be virtue. Hence, “Boss Moves” - Luca Lozano’s debut for Running Back - is aptly titled. Generously spread over two vinyl plates, Lozano investigates the hybrid sound that once was embodied by groups like Future Sound of London, labels like Guerilla and DJs such as Sasha or Dave Angel. Blessed with the production of skills of today, the eyes of a tailor and the chemoreceptors of a perfumer, the Klasse Wrecks and Grafiti Tapes man delivers nine tracks that do it all: tribal, trance, breakbeats, house, 303s, bleeps, rave, dubby deepness and pianos.

Being selfish, is one of the good things about running your own label. If you please, you can just try and re-release that certain record that you always wanted for yourself, but never could get your hand on it. Now, you can just edit it the way you always wanted it to be (oh, those fade-outs…) and press it up. This is one of these occasions. When Kalk (the collaborative project of Philippe Heinen and Joffrey Becker) was released on Julien Briffaz' label Brif in 1999, I just had started to DJ out at a Club in Darmstadt (the late Café Kesselhaus) and the restrained, yet punchy house tracks symbolized what I liked about deep house back then: a mellow alternative to the BPM hunt and rigid attitude in mainstream techno, while not losing itself in chin-stroking wisdom or pesky noodling. It seemed that there weren't too many around with the same desire. Otherwise "Akasha" wouldn't have remained a diamond in disguise and not what Morgan Geist so aptly named an "unclassic". By his definition, that is: an old by and large forgotten record that would have deserved to be hit. If you take discogs as an indicator, more and more people start to think so though. Here is your second chance to obtain a copy of the spirit of Kalk. Mildly edited and restored in the best human-possible way. Mind you, it's old house music from days of Yore. If you look for the production values of a Phil Collins, please go somewhere else. DJ GJ

In times where a compilation of 12-inch bangers passes as an album, Telephones "Vibe Telemetry” opts for a different approach. Without being a departure from his 12″s for Sex Tags Ufo, Full Pupp and yours truly or his brilliant remix work for José Padilla and Vangelis Katsoulis, the Norwegian producer from Bergen who calls Berlin his home, hones sound, skills and aesthetics on his debut long-player. "Vibe Telemetry” is inspired by the pure feeling of listening to house, disco and techno, prior to knowing what it actually was: ambiguous, euphoric, mystical and melancholic. Sonic and physical experiences, which names and origins were yet to be discovered.

Tensnake’s standard In The End (I Want You To Cry) release gets not one, but seven remixes. A nod to the good old remix double pack craze of the nineties, you will find them spread out over two plates. Ranging from a classic Tiger & Woods treatment to Prins Thomas quirkiness via Lone’s happiness, two versions by Shan, the timid DJ Oyster as well as Pete Herbert’s & Dicky Trisco’s respectful re-arrangement, this one has it all: disco, techno, jungle (alomost!), house, cheese & chocolate!
