Oliver Coates - Skins N Slime
Oliver Coates
Skins N Slime
LP | 2020 | US | Original (Rvng Int'l)
23,99 €*
Release:2020 / US – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Oliver Coates makes a new album for Rvng Intl. incorporating ambient, psych, and drone metal techniques with repeating melodic hooks. skins n slimes is inspired by the voids and cuts of Gordon Matta Clark, the musical numerology of Hanne Darboven, and the ambient compositions of Enno Velthuys, and it expands on the modulated cello and synth palette of Remain Calm, his 2016 record with Mica Levi. The music incorporates a new live "slime" method of performance, improvisation and composition which is a chain of cello, heavy distortion, chorus and two loopers automating different layers of counterpoint. The smeared organum harmony is spread across two octaves and two 5th transpositions and is structured like a live action painting. The majority of the tracks on the album are single take live performances. One of Oliver's most important collaborators from 2019, Malibu, returns on the final track in a spoken word and auto-tuned singing capacity. The tender aspects of pure strings in some tracks reflect a fragile state of mind and an unwillingness to do anything.

Room For The Moon

Release:2020 / US – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Kate NV is the project of Russia-born recording artist, songwriter, and producer Kate Shilonosova. Best known in her hometown of Moscow as the lead singer and founder of the post-punk garage band Glintshake, Kate NV is also a performer in the experimental Moscow Scratch Orchestra and releases music under an alternate alias, NV. "Room for the Moon" is Kate NV's third album and second for RVNG Intl. "Room for the Moon" was inspired by memories of 70s/80s Russian and Japanese pop music and movies. The album finds Kate NV singing in Russian, French, and English. She collaborated with musicians Jenya Gorbunov (bass guitar), Vladimir Luchanskiy (saxophone), Quinn Oulton (bass guitar, saxophone), Nami Sato (Japanese Narration), and Marco Passarani (marimba). "Music knows what she wants," says Kate NV. On "Room for the Moon", the lyrical follow up to the buoyant minimalism of 2018's "FOR", NV follows this muse in fluid expression, harmonizing her lunar lullabies with a starry compositional choreography. NV says, "I always let music express herself without pressure, and with or without voice."
Pauline Anna Strom - Trans-Millenia Music
Pauline Anna Strom
Trans-Millenia Music
2LP | 2020 | US | Original (Rvng Int'l)
25,99 €*
Release:2020 / US – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Otherworldly and anomalous, hushed and hallucinatory, Pauline Anna Strom's unique style of inner space music reaches across time to futures and pasts far from our own. Trans-Millenia Music compiles eighty minutes of Strom's most evocative work, composed and recorded between 1982 and 1988, for the first authorized overview of the enigmatic Bay Area composer. Pauline Anna Strom introduced her music to the world in 1982 with Trans-Millenia Consort, a collection of transportive synthesizer music providing listeners a vessel to break beyond temporal limits into a world of pulsing, mercurial tonalities and charged, embryonic waveforms. Strom's solicitation into the unknown continued through a half dozen more stellar releases during the decade, which, despite their singularity and mastery, slipped into the more obscure annals of want lists and bootleg editions. Though Strom's work developed during the dawn of San Francisco's influential new age and ambient scenes, her music remains non-programmatic, an adventurous tangent diverting from the era's ideological tropes. The artist's own path to creative maturation was atypical. Raised by her Catholic family in Louisiana and Kentucky, she was tragically deprived of sight due to complications from a premature birth. This impairment would sensitize her to listenable worlds with great acuity and creative engagement, the loss becoming a formative aspect of Strom's spiritualist take on the power of music. Recalling her youth, Strom says she was "a loner and heretic." Seeking solace and solidarity, she moved to the mecca of California's counter culture with her husband, a G.I., who was assigned duty in the Bay Area during the decline of the Vietnam War. Having dabbled with piano as a teen, Pauline's passion for music reignited when synthesizers became central to the serene scene of San Fran FM radio in the mid-70s. Inspired by the electronic music of the instrument's early ambassadors (Klaus Schulze, Brian Eno, Tangerine Dream), Strom purchased a Tascam 4-track recorder and a small array of synths (Yamaha DX7, TX816, CS-10) to navigate her own universe of space music.

Lucrecia Dalt is a Colombian recording artist, songwriter, and producer. After studying civil engineering in Colombia, Dalt worked at a geo-technical company for two years and has since lived in Barcelona and Berlin, where she currently resides. She has released six solo albums and has collaborated with musicians Aaron Dilloway, Jan Jelinek, and Gudrun Gut, to name a few. No era sólida is Dalt's seventh solo record, and her second on Rvng Intl., following the release of 2018's Anticlines. No era sólida is an introspective venture into visceral sonic terrain, as Dalt sets out to capture the moment when one becomes pure sound. The album observes a transition in Dalt herself through the emergence of an alternate ego / state of self named Lia. Each song identifies a different state experienced by Lia, opening with Disuelta (`dissolved') and transforming through pieces such as Seca (`to be dry'), Ser boca (`to be mouth'), Espesa (`thick'). Lia's poetic reflections on the panspermia echo her origins, having come from some other ether. As a lifeform seeded through sound, the very essence of Lia is embodied in the exploratory instincts of her creator Lucrecia Dalt, an artist whose innate sonar system traces the far reaches of musical experimentation.

Angel Tears in Sunlight is Pauline Anna Strom's first album in over thirty years; an assemblage of music that refracts the expansiveness, and minutiae, of imagined realms while embracing the kaleidoscopic echoes of our distant epochs. The capacity to collapse time might elucidate the enigma of Pauline Anna Strom. A mystic force in music, emerging during the dawn of new age as the Trans-Millenia Consort, the pioneering synthesist channelled primordial energies into future-facing sound through a series of full-length releases between 1982 and 1988. Little was known about her, except by a constellation of devoted followers who saw a unique legacy forming amidst the (mostly male) synthesist canon of the time. Following the 2017 release of Trans-Millenia Music, an anthology revitalizing the most evocative parts of Strom's catalog, the Bay Area visionary sensed the universe telling her to return to music. As with her work in the 80s, Angel Tears in Sunlight was composed and recorded in the same San Francisco apartment where Strom has lived for almost four decades in synthesis with her machines and "dinosaurs." Populated by a compact array of modern instruments that streamline the sound of her analog past and her beloved iguanas, Little Soulstice and Ms Huff, the terrarium of her home forms an intimate yet limitless ecosystem that defies the constraints of the outside world. Within this sanctuary, Strom becomes lost in time, drawing on the ancient energies of her inner visions. Her hardware forms the crux of translating these ideas into sound. "It's the only way this stuff can be pulled out of myself, the universe, Little Soulstice, an ammonite_," Strom notes. "It couldn't be done without this machinery, because there's no other way to draw and capture these frequencies into sonic interpretation." Strom's process of recording transient live-takes enriches the mystery of her work. She renders the machinery a composer itself, a cohabitation with a living other. "Many musicians wouldn't go that far because of ego," Strom muses. "The equipment has to become part of you and your creativity. That's how I think it all comes together." Music-making becomes a harmonic language of intuition with an instrument, where Strom cultivates sound for a harvest that defies season. Shaped by circadian contours, Angel Tears in Sunlight is a celestial observatory of earthborn phonic mosaics. Strom uncovers a symbiosis between hardware frequencies and apparitions of nature in the record's arena of organic tones, emulating the melodic pulses of primeval terrain. The album transcends both shadow and light, falling to hushed stretches of sound as if not to awaken antediluvian animals, before soaring through the treetops where ancient skies peer over reptilian traffic and unsparing rains.

Genre:Electronic / Dance
Composer Tashi Wada has performed for years with his father Yoshi Wada-artist,
composer, and early member of the Fluxus movement. However, they have rarely
appeared together in studio settings. Nue, the fourteenth entry in RVNG Intl.'s
intergenerational FRKWYS series, finally brings Tashi and Yoshi, along with an eclectic
group of close friends and extended family, together on tape. Nue draws on aspects
of Tashi's background for his widest vision to date-among them the minimalist bagpipe
music of Yoshi, who co-composed three of the tracks, the psychoacoustic and
perceptual explorations of his mentor, composer James Tenney, and reimagined
forms of ancient and devotional music. The album, however, is not a tribute to the
past or a recapitulation of familiar sounds. Instead, Nue is an intertwining of people
and ideas as a means of growing, of looking inward to move outward, and of looking
back to move forward. To achieve this growth, Tashi assembled a core group of fell
ow travelers, including Yoshi, composer Julia Holter, producer Cole MGN, and
percussionist Corey Fogel to give life to this multifaceted suite. As an experience,
Nue subtly navigates the interactions, intimacy and spaciousness of this group. The
album's title itself is a nod to Tashi's abiding interest in duality and the unknown: nue
is a mythological Japanese chimera with the face of a monkey, the legs of a tiger, and a
snake for a tail, a composite form, at once disturbing and otherworldly. But, as the
composer points out, nue is also French for naked-stripped of complexity, bare and
exposed, but also raw and essential. From the doubling of tones-and the world of
harmonic nuances such an action produces-to the rich interplay between individual
musicians, all baring their own personalities and experiences through shared
performance, Tashi's compositions allow space for these elements to join and grow.
The multipartite creature that is an ensemble melds in the simplicity an d purity of the
music itself.

Gatefold double LP includes a high-quality digital download and lyrics zine. Helado Negro's Private Energy gets re-introduced to the public via Rvng Int'l.

in expanded form, appearing on vinyl for the first time alongside a new CD edition. Supplemented with three brand new "versions," this iteration of Private Energy (Expanded) will continue the strong narrative of Helado Negro's spectral and transmissive 2016 opus.

Exploring the expressivity within intense states of being, Latinx identity, and pluralistic sensibilities, Helado Negro's Private Energy (Expanded) is an engrossing statement achieved through lyrically personal and political avant pop music.

Private Energy (Expanded) carves a deep groove through the electronic music landscape, challenging to best Brooklyn-based artist Roberto Carlos Lange's previous accomplishments under the Helado Negro moniker.

Half a decade and half a dozen albums later since Helado Negro's 2009 debut album Awe Owe, Lange has cultivated an untraditional approach to songcraft that places his voice on an adventurous musical impulse without shying from familiar pop appreciation.

The hymn of Private Energy (Expanded) initially sounded in 2014 while Lange absorbed accounts of the unjust death of Michael Brown and felt a sharpened sense of vulnerability and anger as a minority.

Lange's creative drive veered toward toward catharsis - he sought to make music that would protect as a form of protest.

The music of Private Energy (Expanded) was shaped to demarcate the artist's pride of being, preserving and persevering, and celebrating, as Lange puts it, "my brownness, my latinidad."

Emily A Sprague's deeply rooted insight and clear-eyed foresight is harbored once again in the newly carved space of Hill, Flower, Fog. "Hill, Flower, Fog is a place and a poem," says Emily, "a personal letter and vision for myself, outlining priorities that I aspire to incorporate during my time on earth: family, sustainability, patience, and growth." Seeking language and dream between the stasis and shift of this year's blur, Emily found nourishment in transformed daily practices, a process of retrieving the important things from the fog of past routines. Channeling deeply into the here and now fostered a far-reaching connectedness, a lifeline from the everyday to the cosmic. If Water Memory / Mount Vision, Emily's first forays into formless music, read as earth-bound passages, HFF scatters more ineffable references across its pages. The maximal stretch of the universe, and germanely, its minimal density, are explored through compositions that search and embrace the infinitude and human condition mirrored, fragmented, and felt in both. On HFF, Emily invites meditation on perception and sensation in a six part spectra. "Moon View" and "Star Gazing" are cosmic commitments to look up, while "Horizon" and "Mirror" describe abstract views relating to the position of self and its projection outwards. "Woven" and "Rain" represent more textural and tactile impressions, elemental immersions in our earth's perfectly imperfect patterns. Each piece varies subtly, yet remains soundly familial.

Colin Self's Siblings is a proposal for interdependence, critical joy, and an expansive sense of being. As the lyrics beam, "I used to live as an anomaly... no explanation
biologically," so siblings share hidden language, lore, and identity. On Siblings, ecstatic voices and sound knot to form new ideals of kinship, emerging as horizontal relations
for multi-species flourishing. Colin Self challenges boundaries of perception with his art, music, and performances. Inspired by the work of Donna Haraway (Cyborg Manifesto, Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene), Siblings is the final segment of the six-part opera series entitled Elation. Informed by Self's
exploration of the ways of knowing, Siblings places a non-biological family at its center. The characters, bonded by curiosity and caring, generate ways of collectively coming
together on a damaged planet. Self uses Siblings to define this familial experience through sound and its soundmakers.

Limited Edition for Record Store Day 2018

Oliver Coates' new arrangement of Pulitzer Prize-winning US composer John
Luther Adams' 2007 piece Canticles of the Sky appears for the first time in
recorded form as a limited vinyl edition from RVNG Intl. In March 2017,
Coates conducted 32 cellists in the UK premiere of the composition,
displaying its intimacies after deeply communing with the trajectories of
Adams' fictional suns and moons, the guiding characters and carriers of the
piece. This recorded interpretation, performed by Coates for multi-layered
solo cello, takes Canticles of the Sky to wondrous, dizzying new heights,
envisaging Adams' parallel dimension as an idealised construction. Marrying
extra-musical studio techniques and meticulous arrangements to Coates'
fascination with early electronic synthesis (especially the work of Laurie
Spiegel), the result offers an ultra-sensory take on classical string
instrumentation. "Making this recording was not only about creating the most
finely tuned interpretation of the piece in terms of frequencies and dynamics,
but was also a chance to do something I have always wanted to do; to make
a study in colour," Coates says. "Inspired by paintings by Hilma af Klint and
Agnes Martin, I had a chance to build an overall image using different playing
techniques and microphone combinations." Coates has released a handful of
solo records under his own name, including the acclaimed 2016 album
Upstepping, and in 2017 Remain Calm, a collaboration with Mica Levi. As an
artist and performer, he is frequently commissioned by world-renowned
orchestras, choreographers and visual artists to compose or curate integral
new works.

With a melodic cluster dripping into a pool of dark water, UkabazUmorezU's
arrival ripples as an apex in Sugai Ken's continued construction of a deeply
resonant, enveloping sound world. Upon contact, UkabazUmorezU gently and
generously unfurls across aural alleys and streets mundanely but mystically detailed
with recontextualized Japanese rituals and tradition. A lived experience of
traditional Japanese music's conversation with environment, and vice versa, forms
the melodic make-up and metaphysical philosophy conditioning UkabazUmorezU.
Upon imagining a landscape, Sugai decomposes the image (and the images within
the image) and replaces it with a sound representation - an artifactual terrain,
tethered to but abstracted from the natural world. The eleven pieces which form
UkabazUmorezU dovetail meaningfully with the invented album title, roughly
translating to "slow and steady wins the race." Made up of recordings sourced and
appropriated from the local perf orming arts of Kanagawa, Japan (where Sugai
lives), his daily surroundings, and Sugai's tool kit of electronic synthesis,
UkabazUmorezU evokes tranquil patience while never settling into a single style or
still of sound for too long.
