Release:2018 / US – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Michele Mercure is an American recording artist, soundtrack, and score composerresiding in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Mercure was part of a group of Americanmusicians in the 80s dabbling with new and cutting edge instrument technologies andself-distribution including Pauline Anna Strom, Lauri Paisley, and K. Leimer. "BesideHerself" is the next edition of RVNG Intl.'s ReRVNG archival series, presented incollaboration with Freedom To Spend, following the latter label's 2017 reissue ofMercure's 1986 album Eye Chant. The music collected on "Beside Herself" includesworks from Mercure's releases "Rogue and Mint" (1983), "A Cast of Shadows"(1984), "Dreams Without Dreamers" (1985), and "Dreamplay" (1990), circulatedthrough tape-trading networks assisted largely by insightful editorial in Eurock, aseminal music magazine covering progressive rock and electronic music scenes.Michele Mercure often dreams of music, and in her waking life, reclaims fragments ofthese fleeting, floating melodies in her compositions and sound art. Beside Herself,an anthology of Mercure's self-produced and distributed cassettes released between1983 and 1990, collects these dreamlike passages and lo-fi nocturnes, preserving thequalities of discovery and intimacy surrounding their genesis. Mercure's sound is aporous electronic art that overlaps ambient, abstract, and industrial sensibilities - itsspaciousness reveals an artist attuned cinematically rather than for radio play orpublic performance. She approached the latter theatrically, and rarely, disdainingmost live shows as too serious, and bringing her music to bare on her audiences inplayful, immersive contexts. On recordings, Mercure's night lit synth music evokesnon-confined environments, at once expressionistic and minimal and always aware ofits surroundings. · RIYL: Conrad Schnitzler, Pauline Anna Strom, Muslimgauze, Art ofNoise, Lena Platanos.

In broad string strokes, British cellist, composer, and producer Oliver Coates went fromstudying at the Royal Academy of Music to becoming an artist in residency at London'sSouthbank Centre to contributing to works from Radiohead. His in depth understandingof classical cello is met with his study and exploration of electronic experimental sound.Earlier on, Coates received the Royal Philharmonic Society Young Artist Award and hasbeen commissioned for string and electronic arrangements with visual artist LawrenceLek and composer Jonny Greenwood (on the scores for Paul Thomas Anderson's ThereWill Be Blood and Phantom Thread) and collaborated with musician Mica Levi on their2016 album Remain Calm. Coates' foray into electronic leanings on Upstepping, his other2016 release, have led to the more expansive architecture of his 2018 album, Shelley's onZenn-La, his first for RVNG Intl. Shelley's on Zenn-La is a cerebral dance record thatdoes much with liv e cello performance alongside synthesis. Coates made music mostlyin Renoise, composing complex drum sequences in numbers and pencil drawnwaveforms. Some of the compositions get into FM synthesis - "I like hearing how onetone is enriched by another tone modulating the first, resulting in gleaming sets of newharmonics," says Coates, "I started thinking about putting live cello playing into that chainof antagonism resulting in beauty."

Release:2018 / US – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
Colin Self's Siblings is a proposal for interdependence, critical joy, and an expansive sense of being. As the lyrics beam, "I used to live as an anomaly... no explanationbiologically," so siblings share hidden language, lore, and identity. On Siblings, ecstatic voices and sound knot to form new ideals of kinship, emerging as horizontal relationsfor multi-species flourishing. Colin Self challenges boundaries of perception with his art, music, and performances. Inspired by the work of Donna Haraway (Cyborg Manifesto, Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene), Siblings is the final segment of the six-part opera series entitled Elation. Informed by Self'sexploration of the ways of knowing, Siblings places a non-biological family at its center. The characters, bonded by curiosity and caring, generate ways of collectively comingtogether on a damaged planet. Self uses Siblings to define this familial experience through sound and its soundmakers.

Limited Edition for Record Store Day 2018Oliver Coates' new arrangement of Pulitzer Prize-winning US composer JohnLuther Adams' 2007 piece Canticles of the Sky appears for the first time inrecorded form as a limited vinyl edition from RVNG Intl. In March 2017,Coates conducted 32 cellists in the UK premiere of the composition, displaying its intimacies after deeply communing with the trajectories ofAdams' fictional suns and moons, the guiding characters and carriers of thepiece. This recorded interpretation, performed by Coates for multi-layeredsolo cello, takes Canticles of the Sky to wondrous, dizzying new heights, envisaging Adams' parallel dimension as an idealised construction. Marryingextra-musical studio techniques and meticulous arrangements to Coates'fascination with early electronic synthesis (especially the work of LaurieSpiegel), the result offers an ultra-sensory take on classical stringinstrumentation. "Making this recording was not only about creating the mostfinely tuned interpretation of the piece in terms of frequencies and dynamics, but was also a chance to do something I have always wanted to do; to makea study in colour," Coates says. "Inspired by paintings by Hilma af Klint andAgnes Martin, I had a chance to build an overall image using different playingtechniques and microphone combinations." Coates has released a handful ofsolo records under his own name, including the acclaimed 2016 albumUpstepping, and in 2017 Remain Calm, a collaboration with Mica Levi. As anartist and performer, he is frequently commissioned by world-renownedorchestras, choreographers and visual artists to compose or curate integralnew works.

The story of electronic music pioneer Kerry Leimer continues with a focus on his auteurist studio project Savant.Compiling the standalone album, 1983’s The Neo Realist (At Risk), with Savant’s debut 12? and a grip of compilation and unreleased tracks, Artificial Dance documents Leimer’s complete collaborative venture into the unpredictable realities of music, exploring the gulf between what is expected by its creators and what is eventually – and eternally – committed to tape.Savant was designed by Leimer to tap into entropic truths, asserting an uncaged counterpart to the loop-based minimalism he produced in isolation (recently surveyed on RVNG Intl.’s A Period of Review (1975-1983)). Aligning himself with the Cage-ean principles of chance operations and musical contingency, Savant was a band sans jam. Allegorically, a blindfolded collaboration whose happenstance source music Leimer would sample, loop and sculpt at will.Leimer was creatively autonomous to the point of being a persona absentia in Seattle’s 80s rock scene. Unconcerned by social status, Leimer enlisted musicians from experimental and post-punk groups in the area to come record as Savant at his home studio, Tactical. Among them were ambient composer Marc Barreca, John Foster (founder of Op Magazine – the experimental music publication), Jim and David Keller of the New Flamingos, and their bandmate Alex Petit. Others, like Roy Finch and Dennis Rea, came from a similar orbit.

A Period of Review (Original Recordings: 1975 – 1983) unearths unheard portions of K. Leimer’s vast archives and highlights the work of a self-taught visionary whose use of generative compositions ferried his music to infinite resonance. With its hypnotic, arcadian terraces and nearly narcotic glacial beauty, A Period of Review has a rightful place in the canon of pioneering ambient music.

Composer Tashi Wada has performed for years with his father Yoshi Wada-artist,composer, and early member of the Fluxus movement. However, they have rarelyappeared together in studio settings. Nue, the fourteenth entry in RVNG Intl.'sintergenerational FRKWYS series, finally brings Tashi and Yoshi, along with an eclecticgroup of close friends and extended family, together on tape. Nue draws on aspectsof Tashi's background for his widest vision to date-among them the minimalist bagpipemusic of Yoshi, who co-composed three of the tracks, the psychoacoustic andperceptual explorations of his mentor, composer James Tenney, and reimaginedforms of ancient and devotional music. The album, however, is not a tribute to thepast or a recapitulation of familiar sounds. Instead, Nue is an intertwining of peopleand ideas as a means of growing, of looking inward to move outward, and of lookingback to move forward. To achieve this growth, Tashi assembled a core group of fellow travelers, including Yoshi, composer Julia Holter, producer Cole MGN, andpercussionist Corey Fogel to give life to this multifaceted suite. As an experience,Nue subtly navigates the interactions, intimacy and spaciousness of this group. Thealbum's title itself is a nod to Tashi's abiding interest in duality and the unknown: nueis a mythological Japanese chimera with the face of a monkey, the legs of a tiger, and asnake for a tail, a composite form, at once disturbing and otherworldly. But, as thecomposer points out, nue is also French for naked-stripped of complexity, bare andexposed, but also raw and essential. From the doubling of tones-and the world ofharmonic nuances such an action produces-to the rich interplay between individualmusicians, all baring their own personalities and experiences through sharedperformance, Tashi's compositions allow space for these elements to join and grow. The multipartite creature that is an ensemble melds in the simplicity an d purity of themusic itself.

Over the ten, symmetrical pieces of FOR, Kate NV scores her native Moscow environmentwith just enough whimsy to gurgle through the cracks and grow psychotropic foliage. Eachsound assumes its own personality, moving through the album metropolis like miniature, malleable mutants viewed from NV's apartment window. Kate NV is a versatile artist thatmaneuvers instinctively in whatever musical environs she finds herself. NV's second soloalbum is an even more abstract endeavor than the hybrid pop of 2016's Binasu (Orange MilkRecords). Inspired by casual moments of ephemeral sound from within and beyond herapartment walls, the record has a clarity arrived altogether and from right under her nose,as if the music was not written by herself, but her chair. FOR inhabits a stage that PieroMilesi & Daniel Bacalov, Ann Southam, or Hiroshi Yoshimura may have written music forand dresses it with Viktor Pivovarov's psychedelic depictions of Moscow - contorting bodiesand flying pe ncils dance with subtle arpeggiations and anthropomorphic MIDI. Each piece isan alien arrangement of common elements that extend the everyday ritual into an eternallandscape of unconscious activity. Somewhere along that landscape, Kate awaits with applesfor hands and fish for feet.

With a melodic cluster dripping into a pool of dark water, UkabazUmorezU'sarrival ripples as an apex in Sugai Ken's continued construction of a deeplyresonant, enveloping sound world. Upon contact, UkabazUmorezU gently andgenerously unfurls across aural alleys and streets mundanely but mystically detailedwith recontextualized Japanese rituals and tradition. A lived experience oftraditional Japanese music's conversation with environment, and vice versa, formsthe melodic make-up and metaphysical philosophy conditioning UkabazUmorezU.Upon imagining a landscape, Sugai decomposes the image (and the images withinthe image) and replaces it with a sound representation - an artifactual terrain, tethered to but abstracted from the natural world. The eleven pieces which formUkabazUmorezU dovetail meaningfully with the invented album title, roughlytranslating to "slow and steady wins the race." Made up of recordings sourced andappropriated from the local perf orming arts of Kanagawa, Japan (where Sugailives), his daily surroundings, and Sugai's tool kit of electronic synthesis,UkabazUmorezU evokes tranquil patience while never settling into a single style orstill of sound for too long.

Gatefold double LP includes a high-quality digital download and lyrics zine. Helado Negro's Private Energy gets re-introduced to the public via Rvng Int'l.in expanded form, appearing on vinyl for the first time alongside a new CD edition. Supplemented with three brand new "versions," this iteration of Private Energy (Expanded) will continue the strong narrative of Helado Negro's spectral and transmissive 2016 opus.Exploring the expressivity within intense states of being, Latinx identity, and pluralistic sensibilities, Helado Negro's Private Energy (Expanded) is an engrossing statement achieved through lyrically personal and political avant pop music.Private Energy (Expanded) carves a deep groove through the electronic music landscape, challenging to best Brooklyn-based artist Roberto Carlos Lange's previous accomplishments under the Helado Negro moniker.Half a decade and half a dozen albums later since Helado Negro's 2009 debut album Awe Owe, Lange has cultivated an untraditional approach to songcraft that places his voice on an adventurous musical impulse without shying from familiar pop appreciation. The hymn of Private Energy (Expanded) initially sounded in 2014 while Lange absorbed accounts of the unjust death of Michael Brown and felt a sharpened sense of vulnerability and anger as a minority.Lange's creative drive veered toward toward catharsis - he sought to make music that would protect as a form of protest. The music of Private Energy (Expanded) was shaped to demarcate the artist's pride of being, preserving and persevering, and celebrating, as Lange puts it, "my brownness, my latinidad."

Issued respectively by John Fahey's Takoma record label in 1980 & Leon's Arbitor private press in 1982, Nommos & Visiting were the twin brainchildren of studio wizard Craig Leon. His production was pivotal in realizing the debut recordings by Ramones, Blondie, Richard Hell & Suicide. While those albums broke ground in new worlds of sound, Leon's own debut album was arguably, if not literally, more alien.
