The two songs included in this 7-inch, “Spooky” and “Hurt So Bad”, directly come Andrea Balducci debut album “Bloom” (Schema Records, 2012, SC 459): two evergreen standards modernized and rearranged in a smooth, refined groovy soul key; a voice ins pired by crooners such as Frank Sinatra, Jamie Cullum and Michael Bublé, over music played by an exceptional team of musicians. These are songs that speak to the heart.

A quite unknown artist, Edith Peters was active between the 50s and 70s, singing as a member of the Peters Sisters, and as an actress; after marrying her Italian agent in 1958, she moved to Italy where she starred in several movies, TV series and ads.In 1973 Sante Palumbo wrote and arranged a couple of songs for Edith Peters, perhaps with the aim of promoting her solo career. It was the same he released “Sway”, which was destined to become a cult LP.“This Is the Moment” was originally released as the B-side of “Lord Please Hear my Prayer”, a rare 45 published by Cipiti Records. On Cipiti she had already released her rendition of “Speak Softly, Love”, a theme from “The Godfather” soundtrack, though her career was at that time orientated more toward her activity as a TV and movie actress. And when the single was released, it was rapidly overshadowed by more important releases like “The Dark Side Of The Moon” by Pink Floyd. And it is a shame, since “This Is the Moment”, written by Tony Benn Feghaly (erroneously credited as ‘T. B. Feghall’ in the original release) and Sante Palumbo, is an amazing gospel-soul song. In only two minutes and a half The Sante Palumbo Orchestra accompanies Peters’ entrancing voice, delivering a groovy and intense interpretation – a richness that requires multiple listen to grasp all the nuances of this stunningly orchestrated piece. The original 1973 version of the song is here featured as a B-side, while Gerardo Frisina signs the A-side of this reissue with a rework of the track – doubling the length and adding his signature rhythm patterns.

Inspired by the music of Fela Kuti and his Africa 70 project feat. drummer Tony Allenl, “The Devil Made Me Do It” is pure downtempo afro beat in its original version; the first remix here included, the “Invisible Cosmic Echoes”, has a slower pace and is characterized - as the title suggests - by reverberations and space sound, while the “Invisible Astral Wave” is perfect for a DJ remix and has got a slightly accelerated pace, with an emphasis on the percussive / tribal element.

Considering the incredibly wide range of styles adopted by Piero Umiliani during his career, it will come as no surprise for you to know that he also produced disco. At that time in Italy disco had still an exotic appeal and was considered apt to accompany a genre of movies that was at once erotic and comic. “Discomusic” is some sort of a white version of a sound that is inherently black, a unique record within Umiliani‘s discography. The track “Discomania” became popular as the closing theme of 90° Minuto, a famous Italian football TV show.

The arrival of Marvin Parks on today’s musical scene is a perfect addition to the renaissance of the Afro-American Jazz Crooner panorama, deeply rooted in the Black Music tradition. Having his roots in Gospel and in the ’50s and ’60s jazz singers by the likes of Nat King Cole, Johnny Hartman and Joe Williams, Marvin Parks yet remains by all means an artist of today. In his debut Marvin shapes his light baritone colors within the sound of a well-established group of musicians under the direction and production of Nicola Conte, giving a different light to well-known standards and some originals.

A mind-melting opera. Some of the tracks here simply anticipate Techno and generally Electronic music of the early 70s. While Kraftwerk released “Ralph & Florian”, and about one year before the releasing of the milestone “Autobahn”, maestros Sandro Brugnolini and Giorgio Carnini were already experimenting the deep sounds of analogue synthesizer ARP 2600. The set provides some blending Funk tunes driven by Experimental Electronic music, all with a heavy dramatic feel: the result is an unbelievable, unique and explosive library music LP. “Beat Drammatico Underground Pop Elettronico” is the title that Brugnolini and Carnini adopted for this collection of several TV synchronization themes. What we had is stunning Drama Cop scores and dark Electronic moods, all surrounded by loads of fuzzy vibes and all that weird, Industrial, Futuristic Synth FX and so on…This reissue gives back a long forgotten and obscure session originally released on Fonit label in 1973.

Way ahead of their time, Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza were an experimental collective fully based on improvised music. It was the only European group exclusively made of composers, instead of simple performers. The Group tried to break the schemes by making use of new instruments and electronic effects, reinventing new timbres, using the voice in an unconventional way. They were also known for the presence of Ennio Morricone on trumpet who, at the same time (1966), was also working as a soundtrack composer for Sergio Leone’s western movies!Up until now all the works have been the fruit of a composer and that this «open» form was in reality still «closed» to a still greater opening. It was the presence in Rome of one of its principal members, the composer Larry Austin, that encouraged the formation of the IMPROVISATION GROUP OF THE NUOVA CONSONANZA, which is the only group in Europe formed exclusively of Composers. The members of this group intercalate the instruments into various formations, from a minimum of two instruments, to a total formation. The essential element of the group is a sense of good understanding, which is the base for finding a fertile field first for discussion and then for performance. This is the first time in the history of western music that more than one composer get together playing various instruments, where the result is no longer the result o f an individual effort but of a joint effort. For all this, it is clear that the GROUP makes an effort to surmount the limits of this system, and despite these limits, in some cases, gives glimpses of new horizons, of a new system, with the use of new instruments. The continual invention of timbres, and also the use of some electronic effects, for example the use of voices as impulse-phonemons, puts the group in a position of actuality, where contemporary composers of subjective vision have yet to arrive. All the pieces in this collection are absolutely «improvised» and are not the result of «editing». The most interesting thing is that the actual duration of the piece for the listener is the same as that taken for its production, that is an «effort» of few minutes. The art of improvisation is fascinating and this way of «composing together» results in an internal and external tension of great sensitivity, and I think that this is the only magic still possible in the music of to-day, no longer written, and completely deprived of all myth in front of that personage once called Author.

Cinematic funk-porn-grooves from Jay Richford & Gary Steven a.k.a. Stefano Torossi.A sweet groover from the Italian scene of the 70s – music that’s got a lush feel, but a funky one too – a greatmix of strings and electric instrumentation that rivals the best cop/crime work of the time – yet also has a nicesexy feel too! There’s almost a blaxploitation vibe to the record at times – and although some instrumentssolo at points, the real groove lies in the tight vamping of the orchestra – which hits all the right notes to reallysend the whole thing soaring – often with a nice use of tone and color too!

A deep mystery surrounds the movie “Nell’anno della Luna” (In the year of the Moon) and its soundtrack, which was released one year later. A beautiful work that lingers in between swing and melodies, in a fad that was popular a few decades earlier, complemented by some elements of novelty borrowed from beat and rock. The title track, “Alla brasiliana” and “Samba Querida” sound more traditional, while titles like “Afro Swing”, “Underground”, “Beatmania” (all featuring the vocal ensemble I 4+4, led by Nora Orlandi) represent a more adventurous side of this soundtrack.

“La Conquista di Luna” (The Moon’s Conquest, 1969) is composer Luciano Michelini’s masterpiece, one of the rarest and most sought Italian LP’s, an imaginary sci-fi soundtrack enriched by the presence of th e legendary singer Edda Dell’Orso on some tracks. Drawing its structure from classical and orchestral soundtracks, the album is tinged with prog elements ahead of their time, soft psychede lia and moments of sheer genius: more than 40 years after its first release, it still guarantees a jaw-dropping listening experience. There is only a tiny Wikipedia page about Luciano Michelini, and is written in German. A fact that should make us think on how he is still virtually unknown and unappreciated in Italy. After graduating from the conservatory, the pianist and composer started working as a teacher, while pursuing a more creative ca-reer as a composer. From 1964 to 1982 he also worked as a manager for RCA and left his mark primarily as the author of Italian film soundtracks. Among his best-known scores are worth mentioning “Il Decamerone nero”, “La polizia accusa: il servizio segreto uccide”, “La città gioca d’azzardo” and, above all, the beautiful “L’isola degli uomini pesce”, written for the eponymous sci-fi horror film by Sergio Martino. His true masterpiece, however, was composed in 1969 and is titled “La Conquista di Luna” (The Moon’s Conquest), one of the rarest and most sought Italian soundtracks, virtually impossible to get without spending a fortune. Michelini and his orchestra produced this imaginary sci-fi soundtrack enriched by the presence of the legendary singer Edda Dell’Orso on some tracks.Drawing its structure from classical and orchestral soundtracks, the album is tinged with prog elements ahead of their time, soft psychedelia and moments of sheer genius: more than 40 years after its first release, it still guarantees a jaw-dropping listening experience. It is almost impossible, for example, to listen to “Tycho” without thinking of the following decades of orchestral pop production and how a song like that could and should have exerted its influence. Yet another collaboration between Sandro Brugnolini and Stefano Torossi, who also worked together on the masterpiece “Feelings”. “Musica per commenti sonori” consists of twelve amazing tracks that will excite lovers of the wildest funk, producers in search of rare breaks, and those with a penchant for the psycho-beat atmospheres of the sixties. One of the rarest library music releases ever, that’s never been re-released in any form until now!“Musica per commenti sonori” is a cult series within the diverse world of Italian library music. In the late sixties and seventies, the small record label Costanza Records has published several releases precisely focusing on ‘background music’, including works of great composers such as Peppino De Luca, Roberto Pregadio, Franco Micalizzi, Vito Thomas, Giancarlo Thomas Puccio Roelens, Riccardo Luciani, and by the protagonists of this long-time due reissue: Sandro Brugnolini and Stefano Torossi. The two musicians, who had also worked together on the masterpiece “Feelings” (1974), have often collaborated and delivered some of the best Italian library music of all time. “Musica per commenti sonori” is certainly one of the most interesting. On the two equally split sides of this LP, the first for Torossi and the second for Brugnolini (but it seems that this partition was exclusively dictated by legal demands), there are twelve amazing tracks that will excite lovers of the wildest funk, producers in search of rare breaks, and those with a penchant for the psycho-beat atmospheres of the sixties.Among the most heated tracks featured on Torossi’s side, we can’t pass over the amazing “Sweet-Beat”, “Interrupted” (perhaps the best track of the album) and “Repetition” while “Polyphony”, “Motuproprio” and the closing track “Flyer” shine on Brugnolini’s. Virtually impossible to find, even at astonishing prices, this reissue puts back into the market one of the best examples of ‘The Italian Art of Library Music’: a genre worldwide envied and collected.

“Produzione”, originally released in 1973 on Piero Umiliani’s LP “Problemi d’oggi”, is an amazing mix of acoustic percussion and electronic experimentation, considered by some as the first example of techno / trance music ever recorded. This song, along with “Attività”, another excerpt from “Problemi d’oggi”, has been ‘reworked’ by Gerardo Frisina, who cleverly extends the original content by mixing it with contemporary electronic sensations. The result, packaged in an artwork inspired by the original 1973 release, are two tracks in which the ’70s avant-garde and today’s music blend with surprising ease.

Among all the aliases used by the great Piero Umiliani, M. Zalla is perhaps his richest and surprisingly multifarious. “Suspense” perfectly anticipates what you will hear in its seventeen songs: tension, gloomy atmospheres, mystery and, needless to say, suspense elements that convey anxiety and distress. Thanks to the clever use of Moog and keyboards, c ombined with magnificent orchestral arrangements, the tracks rapidly flow one after another in a cre scendo that leaves you breathless.Among all the aliases used by the great Piero Umiliani, M. Zalla is perhaps his most rich and surprisingly multifarious: mainly used to produce experimental records that had little commercial appeal, this ‘nom de plume’ (along with Moggi) is tied to memorable episodes of his career, releases such as “Problemi d’oggi” (literally “Today’s Problems”), “Mondo inquieto” (i.e. “An Unsettling World”), and also “Suspense”, now reissued by Schema Records. And if titles such as those mentioned above may somehow disguise the musical content (electronic music, by the way), “Suspense” perfectly anticipates what you will hear in its seventeen songs. A full-black front cover, the title written with yellow coloured typeface (it couldn’t be any different) for an album that promises tension, gloomy atmospheres, mystery and, needless to say, suspense elements that convey anxiety and distress. Thanks to the clever use of Moog and keyboards, combined with magnificent orchestral arrangements, the tracks rapidly flow one after another in a crescendo that leaves you breathless, to cite the title of one of the best tracks. And, speaking about the titles of the tracks, what better way to introduce this reissue to the public other than quoting “Suspense notturna”, “Paura sul fondo”, “Killer”, “Inquieto”, “Suspense angosciosa”, “Evasione notturna” and my favourite one, “Suspense atomica”. A treat for your ears, and another fundamental piece to reconstruct the story of a Master of Italian music. Lean back in your chair and turn off the light...

“The Folk Group” represents a peculiar work within Piero Umiliani’s seemingly endless career.Recorded for the Background Music series, it uncovers the Maestro’s passion for folk and ’60s/’70smusic. It’s especially characterized by the bizarre “Guitar Improvisation” and the incredible and funky“Underworld”, a gem that we recommend to any hip-hop producer!

The first chapter of Piero Scattini’s acclaimed movie trilogy, whose soundtracks were all entrusted into PieroUmiliani’s expert hands. The sumptuous orchestrations, the guests and the prestigious friends who tookpart in the recordings: Alessandro Alessandroni, Edda Dell’Orso, Franco D’Andrea, Gianni Basso, OscarValdambrini and Angelo Baroncini, thus explaining the excellence of the final result, lingering betweenorchestral and pop music. ‘Easy listening’, as they used to say, but of extraordinary quality.

Another excellent soundtrack by Piero Umiliani, maybe his famous one ever, this time composed for Luigi Scattini’s film “SVEZIA, INFERNO E PARADISO”(Sweden, Heaven and Hell), a so-called ‘mondo movie’ entirely shot in the scandinaviancountry which the title refers to. Umiliani’s music is able to emphasize the different moodsof the movie: at times dramatic, on other occasions ironic or peaceful.

This 45rpm single anticipates the new full-length album by Alex Puddu, a real specialist inthe field of groovy imaginary soundtracks with a strong ‘70s vibe. The title of this 7’’ is “TheBull”, and it’s the most representative track from the upcoming record “In the Eye of theCat”, which undoubtedly is one of Puddu’ s best and cohesive works to date.As Nils Markvardsen (editor of the film magazine eXtase and film festival curator) says inhis liner notes featured on the album, “The Bull” confronts you with some intense flute anda killer groove and here it’s easy to imagine a mob of armed gangsters robbing a bank inan Italian crime film/poliziottesco!As a B-side we have “Sequenza Erotica” (Erotic Sequence), an unreleased track that canonly be found on this 7’’, spreading that sexy cinematic feeling typical of Puddu’s production(see for example his “Golden Age of Danish Pornography” series). As for “In the Eye of the Cat”, Nils Markvardsen also defines it as a reference to the Italiangiallo film genre of the 1960s and 70s. These lurid murder mysteries/thrillers, featuringblack gloved killers lurking in the dark, gorgeous young ladies being chased and artistic displaysof blood and cruelty, usually had horrifying and imaginative film titles, in many caseswith the words; eye(s), black, blood, death, killer and the name of an animal of some sortthrown in the mix. [...] A nice homage to giallo maestro Dario Argento from fellow RomanAlex Puddu. The North African influence on the percussion can be found throughout the album; it hasthat groovy, vibrant 70s vibe. The varied selection of instruments (organ, flute, moog, bongos, cello, violin, drums, bass, acoustic and electric guitars etc.) blend flawlessly into eachother and make this

“Temi ritmici e dinamici” offers brighter, less psychedelic atmospheres, leaving room to beat sounds,to a swinging rhythm section, to the Hammond organ and even to moog and synthesizers. Despite alighter and an almost purely entertaining context, the album also allows for experimentation, as can beheard in the two songs that close both sides: “Esercizi Ginnici” and “Aspetti Grotteschi”.

Quarta Pagina (Poliziesco) is an unique obscure recording by The Braen's Machine Now available for all music library lovers." - Despite a long series of reissues and rediscoveries that are throwing the ultimate light on one of the most fascinating and enigmatic periods of Italian music history - that of sonifications - the project that goes by the name Braen's Machine continues to evade categorization, and positive information. If you are among the many who got their hands on the beautiful "Underground", republished by Schema a few months ago, you will already know of the involvement of, among others, Piero Umiliani, Alessandro Alessandroni - the name Braen seems to be his alias - and Oronzo (Rino) De Filippi, real name of the other credited author, the mysterious Gisleri. For this new chapter from Braen's Machine, the beautiful and hard to come by "Quarta Pagina (Poliziesco)", published apparently in 300 copies, there are few available pieces of information, pointing to an involvement of Giuliano Sorgini, hidden under the name of Raskovich, and author of five out of the eleven tracks on the release. The lack of reliable information and the enigmatic flavor surrounding the project Braen's Machine, as opposed to the ease with which the music allows us instant identification, are among the secrets that make their records unique. Unlike "Underground", "Quarta pagina" portrays with great skill some possible - who knows if they ever have been realized - crime scenes, with hard-boiled and dark atmospheres, alternating with the psych funk rides that have always characterized many of the projects related to the Italian cinematic genre. All this without excluding, however, avant-garde attitudes and atonal passages that makes "Quarta pagina (Poliziesco)" comparable to the best pages of the Gruppo d'Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza. The track titles, fascinating as usual, tell of "Fraud", "Shadowing", "Remorse", "Soliciting", and emphasize decisive moments as in the case of "The Victim", "On the Run" or "In Prison", while the indications that accompany the pieces will be a treat for fanatical collectors of sonifications. It's not that hard to imagine situations of "exotic full moon, preparation for a violent action, spiritualism, facing fear, sexual freedom, preparation for a revolt" while listening to these precious eleven tracks, which alternate between "slow and animated". And, believe it, you don't even need a dose of LSD (as per the advice of "The Den") in order to travel back to 1971, the year of the album's first release. A page 4 ("Quarta pagina") crime story perhaps, but a legacy of sound that largely deserves a nine-column headline on the front page ...

This debut album represents a great artistic challenge, an example of Schema's research and production work. The reaserch has identified a selection of songs capable to enhance the best qualities of his voice and involve him emotionally, a rich ensemble of tracks studied across several musical genres with the aim of showing off the interpretation. The resulting tracklist consists of a series of tracks wisely rearranged and modernized, enriched by the presence of two previously unreleased gems by Ermanno Principe, a well known singer, drummer and multi instrumentalist on the milanese scene.
