Higher Planes Drifter EP
12" | 2016 | EU | Original (Invisible Inc.)

Release:2016 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Invisible Inc's latest limited 12” brings cosmic adventurer Secret Circuit into the fold. Secret Circuit is the project of musician and visual artist Eddie Ruscha (Laughing Light Of Plenty, Blasé, Thriftcoteque, amongst others) whose solo and collaborative activities have issued forth an inordinate number of stellar releases on labels such as Emotional Response, Beats In Space, Internasjonal Spesial, ESP Institute, Exist Dance and Rush Hour's 'No Label'. With Higher Planes Drifter Secret Circuit has excelled himself yet again. From the outset the bar is set pure and high and we're transported to far flung reaches where only Secret Circuit can take us: expanding upwards and outwards to bathe in the synthesized waves of a warm cosmic ocean. Gothic Rainbow, as the title might suggest, starts off dark and brooding like a bio-mechanical John Carpenter, and slowly evolves into what is quite possibly the most uplifting, blissful piece of music we've heard in a good while. With innumerable synths, a deeper-than-deep bass and a soaring guitar Ruscha manages to blend a perfect sound that's as emotionally warm (and emotive) as it is refreshing. Cold electronic music this is not! Rattlesnake Jelly and Rhythmatic Generator push further out. With touches of “kosmische', experimental lo-fi, some serious synth workouts and tripped up beats the music truly defies categorising as there's nothing else quite like it. Imagine, if you will, swarms of hallucinating microbes at a mass pagan ritual set on the surface of an old drum machine's circuit board and you'll be close. The closing track, Memory Melt, is a thing of pure, lilting beauty. Transcendant, laidback and dubbed out, its piano, guitars, bass and space echo combine in a swirling whirlpool of colorful sound that early morning ravers on the beaches of Ibiza have only dreamed about in what is known as the vertical time shell pod: a phenomenon that appears on certain beaches once every 3 years.

The optimistic chug of “Moon Steppin’” sets the tone and tempo for VOW’s 4th offering by freak Angeleno, Secret Circuit. Side B: “A Love Exotic”, is a decadent disco jam from a strange planet, replete with alien voices and elegant bass hums. B2’s “Code Breaker” raps together samba sensibilities with eastern guitars on a bed of creamy pads to carry you thru the night and then morning.

Collecting Eddie Ruscha's cassette recordings over two compilation albums has been one of the highlights of the label, so it seemed right to hand over the choice tracks to a set of his contemporaries from the City of Angels. First up is rising star Suzanne Kraft. The alias of Diego Herrara, very much a young man to watch. With releases for Running Back, Young Adults and Noise In My Head, as well as possibly EP of the year already as Dude Energy, while holding down being a member of The Pharoahs (ESP Institute / Not Not Fun) and not forgetting, one half of Blase with Mr Ruscha himself, he's a busy man so getting this remix took some effort! However, it was all worth it, as Diego takes the crazy afro-stylings of Afrobotics and pulls it towards the danceflor, adding percussion and sirens, forging the originals vibes in to a ethno-beat club jam that is all about that heads down moment. Next up is the quirksum individuality of The Samps. The project of one of LAs fiest, but hidden musicians, Cole M.G.N. Working with Nite Jewel, Ariel Pink and Puro Instinct is cool enough, but his solo Samps project is another level, with a mind-altering exploration of funk warped electronics. Sure enough then, his take on Shockers is just that, a mash of beats, bass and sample cut ups. This is pyschedelic dance music for the mind. Flipping things completely is LA's Mr Funk himself, Tom Noble. Taking the laid back grooves of Underdogs, Tom does his trademark good time, party vibes with a killer boogie style remix. Letting the groove do the work, keys and a good deal of wiggle just led it all ride home. Finally then is something Emotional Response is all about, highlighting producers the label is fans of, but letting them explore alternate spheres. While Cameron Stallones' Sun Araw project has become one of the names in modern psychedelic experimentation, little is known of the alter-ego Aristrocrat P. Child. With just one cassette of warped disco edits to his name, here he closes the EP with exactly that, a re-edit of cut up irreverance, twisted and looped to distraction - an ethereal experimental and modern musical genius...just like Mr Ruscha.

Dating from tape recordings made between 1996 - 2012, Cosmic Vibrations follows the Tropical Psychedelics (ERS003) album for the label, this time digging deeper in to the mind of Secret Circuit than the more dance flor inspired sounds heard on last years album Tactile Galactics album for Beats In Space. Again we glimpse a melting pot of pyschedelia, techno, balearic and ambient to create an electronic gem, but all done with a wry smile and jesters wink rather than today's penchant of moody seriousness. Life on the US West Coast shines from the album, from opener Out West to She Got Love, sunshine music that couldn't be made anywhere else. It's not all hippy-happy vibes though with Minimal Vibrations and the dub of Straightline taking things in to deeper and instropective territory. However, all things resonate in Eddie's analogue meets kitchen sink synthesis. Layer after layer flats across the album to create a smile-inducing whole. Journeying from the folk guitar of Somnambulation to the minimilism of Glass Skeletons, before bidding a fond farewell in the apt, Bells. This second and fial collection of early cassette works is not an end, but a blessing.

When Juno Plus spoke to Emotional Response boss Stuart Leath recently, he talked excitedly about his latest time intensive project - trawling through boxes of old cassette recordings from L.A multi-instrumentalist Eddie "Secret Circuit" Ruscha to compile a follow-up to 2012's brilliant Tropical Psychedelics compilation. Predictably, the resulting collection is nothing short of brilliant. Typically eccentric, melodious, atmospheric and bristling with interesting ideas, Cosmic Vibrations delves deeper into Ruscha's archives and comes up with gold. Highlights are naturally plentiful, but keep an eye out for the psychedelic ambience of "Electric Brain", the analogue electronic explorations of "Nova Laser", and "Shockers", an acid-flecked chunk of chiming Balearic deep house with exotic, Arabic touches.

Fresh from 12"s on Beats In Space, Emotional Response, and Internasjonal we have this 4 track EP on Lectric Sands. 2 originals plus 2 remixes from the "Zoovoxian dunes of Lectric Sands" (club and dub mixes). Lectric Club mix heads in a disco/dancefloor direction. Original Rub adds guitar from Cole MGN (Ariel Pink, Night Jewel). Lectric Dub strips down to its bass and drums for an echoplex workout, and the Balearic exotica of Head Shrunking (Pleasing Dub) lets us all down easy.

The excellent Beats In Space label continues to impress with each release. Following up Lauer's monster Mascat Ring Down release, Eddie Rushcha's celebrated Secret Circuit project steps up once again, bringing us 'Afterlife'. A typically freeform analogue synth workout with fx drenched vocals and that unmistakeable Secret Circuit vibe. Who better to handle the remix than the Ukraine's very own analogue ambassador, Vakula? His treatment is a textbook Vakula production, warm, expertly evolving, raw machine funk . Wrapping things up we have a dub version, in the truest sense of the word, an utterly spaced out and remade rub down. Typically superb artwork and shrinkwrapped sleeve packaging as you've come to expect!

With recent releases for Internasjonal and Tim Sweeney's Beats In Space Records, Los Angeles based producer Secret Circuit (otherwise known as Eddie Ruscha) has had a breakthrough year with his brittle synth jams, taking inspiration from Balearic disco and minimal wave alike. However, he's been a prolific producer since 1996, and this record on Emotional Response, entitled Tropical Psychedelics, collects productions from Rusha up until 2010 that have previously only seen the light of day on cassette releases. Described by the label as a "Balearic-Tropical-Afro-Psychedelic whirl", the album packs a rich palette of analogue textures into its ten tracks, from the Afro dub of "Afrobotics", through the hazy, beatless combination of piano and analogue synth on "Psouvenirs" to the psychedelic tropicalia of "Foggy Twilights".
