Vitality is defined as the power to live or grow, and perseverance pertains to the qualities of moving forward when an obstacle stands in your way. The music of soul man Sonny Knight brims with these essential life traits because he exudes them. Along with his 7-piece powerhouse band, The Lakers, the 68 year-old retired truck driver has created a sound that extends much deeper than throwback soul. After the band’s 2014 debut album, “I’m Still Here”, came to fruition quicker than anyone expected, Sonny Knight and The Laker’s released a live double album the following year. Since then they’ve been crisscrossing the globe bringing their hard-hitting sound to theaters, performing arts centers, festivals, and night clubs. Now, the band’s sophomore studio set, “Sooner Or Later”, explores themes of overcoming adversity, love found, love lost, and societal observation. By focusing less on so-called groove makers and more on the songwriting process, Knight and company harnessed the power of the different genres that came together to shape what we have come to know as soul music over the last 50+ years. Gospel, country, and blues were all melded into a record that takes you on a journey through life’s questions and emotions via nine originals and a cover of Lonnie Mack’s “Why.” Knight’s vast array of life experiences inform a worldview that give him a unique perspective on the song writing, expressive, and storytelling process. While he was enamored with gospel music during his youth, which eventually led him to recording his first single in 1965, he soon found himself exploring other opportunities. From a deployment in Vietnam to a job as a long haul trucker, that it hasn’t been a linear path has made him a more attuned performer. Combining this hard-earned experience with a vivacious band whose members are half his age, the songs and performances captured on “Sooner Or Later” are a perfect blending of observation, promise, and energy.

For almost 45 years a complete album of Vic Pitts & The Cheaters tapes has been forgotten, waiting to be released until now. In the late 1960s, Vic Pitts & The Cheaters were one of Milwaukee’s top R&B bands. They had their own TV show, played some of the city’s biggest clubs, and backed up big name acts. Between 1969 and 1970 they recorded over a dozen songs with producer Andre Williams at Chess’ Ter-Mar Studio. The results show why they were such a popular live act; some tracks reveal their roots as James Brown fanatics, others relate the happening sounds of Sly & The Family Stone and Chicago’s first record.

Throughout the sixties, Mickey Murray made a name for himself as a hard working entertainer viewed by many as a cross between James Brown and Otis Redding. He held a regular gig with Dyke and The Blazers on Broadway in NYC, toured with Wilson Pickett and The Staple Singers, and also performed sporadically with the queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. All of his hard work finally paid off (though not financially) when he recorded his first single, “Shout Bamalama” in late 1967. It sold a million copies! In 1969 Murray was signed to King Records. The label was preparing for the inevitable loss of James Brown. Since they obviously couldn’t afford to sign another act of Brown’s caliber, they decided to develop their own. Mickey was groomed by the label to become their next superstar act. He recorded People Are Together and they prepared to release it in 1970 on their Federal Records imprint. They chose the title track as the lead single. The response from most of the black DJs they relied on for support was that they wouldn’t play the song. Most of them feared that the song was far too racially provocative for a developing artist. In fact, many black DJs said they were concerned they’d lose their job if they played the track. It didn’t take long at all for King to abandon the release. According to Murray, the record may have never actually been formally released in stores.

Cheat And Start A Fight
LP | 2017 | US | Original (Secret Stash)

Release:2017 / US – Original
Genre:Organic Grooves
Recorded in 2015 by the 12-piece instrumental band, the album is heavily inspired by the sounds of West African popular and spiritual music from long ago. In 2013, Secret Stash Records released Black Market Brass’s debut single to critical acclaim. The bible of all things funky, Wax Poetics, declared the record to be “Heavy Nigerian Madness.” Flea Market Funk raved: “This is some authentic music right here people, recorded in the United States. Inspired by the likes of The Funkees, The Black President, and Moussa Doumbia as much as James Brown and The Meters, this Twin Cities dozen (and sometimes more) is shoveling out their musical path with their unique sounds.” The entire pressing quickly sold out as Secret Stash shipped copies around the world. Two years later, after almost non-stop gigging and rehearsing, Black Market Brass finally tracked their debut album.Cut live in one room over three days, the recordings jump out of the speakers with an energy reminiscent of their celebrated live shows. The album’s title, “Cheat and Start a Fight”, and some of the songs on it are heavily influenced by Yoruba Bátà music, as taught to their conga player by Chief Muraina Oyelami in Iragbjiji, Nigeria. From start to finish, “Cheat And Start A Fight” is laden with endless polyrhythms driven by intricate percussion, intertwined guitar parts, and rock-solid bass and drums. Atop that complex backdrop, the members of the 4-piece horn section, anchored by copious amounts of baritone sax, revel in their ability to effortlessly float back and forth between almost militaristic precision and ultra-loose, sometimes free-jazz inspired playing. The result is a strange sort of booty-shaking party music with a dark, heavy, almost post-apocalyptic undertone. It’s Afrobeat with heavy doses of psychedelic textures and feelings.

Little did Wanda Davis know when she cut her version of "Save Me" for a single on Project Soul Records in 1971, that her first (and unfortunately only) release would go on to become one of the most sought-after records in the history of American Soul, fetching well over $1000 from collectors worldwide. Now, 40+ years later, Wanda returns to wax with the spooky "Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" (a 100+ year old murder ballad made famous by Leadbelly). Backed by the always rock steady grooves of the Secret Stash house band (aka, The Lakers), it's immediately clear Ms. Davis' vocals haven't lost any of their power in the ensuing decades--if anything, she's upped the soulful sultry quotient tenfold!

Secret Stash Organic Grooves

Secret Stash Records is an American record label from Minneapolis, Minnesota, specialized in reissues, rarities and particular, founded by Eric Foss und Cory Wong in 2009. When Secret Stash Records was founded, Eric Foss and Cory Wong were quite a few years working in the music industry but always afflicted with an uneasy feeling to deal with music and artists they don´t really care about. The passion was missing. Even when the two founded their first joint record label Innovative Multimedia and fabricated music on request for Wal-Mart or Borders Book Store, it was always just business. Only with Secret Stash Records Foss and Wong found their salvation. Secret Stash differs from other on reissues specialized labels that not primarily their own taste directs the releasing policy, but that the label intense seeks contact with their audience. Wishes from the ranks of their supporters are taken and tried to fulfill. The only condition: the music has to be based on a groove. This way on the one hand re-releases of George Danquah, Mickey Murray or the Tabou Combo appeared, on the other Hand compilations to Soviet Funk, to believed lost R&B grooves from Minneapolis and Saint Paul or black rhythms from Peru.
