It’s not often that a record has a powerful political message and also works on the dancefloor, but Sol Power All-Stars' "We Push On" EP on Soul Clap Records does that work. Following an acclaimed remix of Underground System earlier this summer, The Washington DC based afro/latin/house super-group drop their first original music on the label, a 12” of summer slappers to move your spirit and your butt, complete with a powerful remix from Kaytronik (aka fellow DC/Baltimore area native Karizma). The EP features two original vocal compositions and two dub versions aimed directly at the dancefloor. First up Take Heed features the powerful vocals of Denise Henderson over an acid-infused afro house beat, and takes it to the top with an uplifting organ solo. Kaytronik’s Heed’N Dub loops the stabs and vocal into a tense, building workout for the dancers in the circle. The flip smooths out the beats, but keeps the message front and center with the vocals of Lenny Kurlou on It Ain’t Right. The horns and percussion lead on the original, while the Dubbed In DC Mix goes deep with the bassline and vocal loops. More From The Sol Power All-Stars- “Politics, social justice, and dance music go way back (think classics like Jay Williams “Sweat”, Aly-Us “Follow Me”, and Machine “There But for the Grace of God I Go”). That said, despite the recent wave of white nationalism, xenophobia, gross corruption, and outright hatred and lies spewing from our White House, we haven’t heard too many records that call out the bullshit, voice our disapproval, or demand change. As Americans of conscience, this national nightmare we've been living since 2016 has taxed our mental health as well as our optimism. And we're just a couple of decently privileged citizens who haven't been separated from our families as children and locked in cages. What's the point of making music in the face of that? Pierre Bennu of Exittheapple counsels artists to "say it with your work". And every resistance movement needs theme music. So We Push On.”

Owing their foundations to traditional afrobeat (and named after a Fela Kuti song), the Brooklyn-based, female-fronted band, Underground System, has built an international reputation around a seamlessly executed stage show, astonishing wherever they go, and compelling crowds to move with unbridled verve.

Robbing American “afrobeat” of its derivative formalism, Underground System continues to reinvent their brand of global dance music, remaining a force determined to recreate, redefine, and reconstruct.

In September 2018 the band released their debut LP What Are You on Soul Clap Records, the much-loved New York City imprint known for their coupling of party-ready DJ culture and shapeshifting live acts. Departing from the extended forms formally associated with Underground System’s live performances and stylistic roots. Hints of afrobeat, no wave, world, electronic, contemporary classical, disco, house, and genre-defying elements combine tightly to reflect a self-aware, edgy, and cohesive statement not currently being made by any other band.

Following up on “What Are You,” Underground System returns to Soul Clap Records with a remix package of their standout single “Just A Place.” Full of heavy hitters and dancefloor bombs, leading off is Germany’s king of the remix, Gerd Janson, who gives us a powerful 80’s influenced main mix and a stripped back drum tool. Up next, UK legend Greg Wilson joins forces with his son Che for a funky bassline driven jam. No strangers to SCR, Soul Clap meets Midnight Magic once again for a trippy, late night take on the track. Then we head to Washington DC for an Afro House workout by the Sol Power All-Stars, before finally bringing it back to Brooklyn with Underground System mastermind Peter Matson giving the original new life for the club.

DJ Support: Willie Graff, Leo Mas, Graeme Park, Jonny Rock, Fred Everything, Jacques Renault, Hot Chip, Radio Sonica Ibiza, Tensnake, Aroop Roy, Robert Owens, Psychemagik, Red Rack’em, Hot Chip, Bradley Zero, Gene Farris, Doorly, The Magician, Jimpster, Rocksteady disco, Horse Meat Disco, Jason Kendig, Franck Roger, Hot Toddy, Marcel Vogel, Ashley Beedle, The Revenge, Soul Clap, Midnight Riot, Quentin Harris, Francois K, Pontchartrain, Till Von Sein, Fabrizio Marmarella.

Nona Hendryx is the real deal; a true musical icon. As a singer, songwriter and performer she has continued to push the envelope since the world first took notice to her work alongside Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles in the 60’s. But it was when she broke off from the girl group in the late 70’s that she really established a voice and vibe of her own as a solo artist. Nona is the original freak. From her music to her fashion and attitude, she’s a ground breaker that has paved the way for what we know today as contemporary music.

We (Soul Clap) first connected with Nona Hendryx through our work with George Clinton, Sa’d “the Hourchild” Ali and Chuck “Da Fonk” Fishman. She wrote and sang the single “Shine” from our last album. That experience left us all wanting to collaborate more, so we teamed up with Morgan Wiley from Midnight Magic and all got in the studio to producing new EP for Soul Clap Records; four tracks of house, soul, jazz and of course THE FUNK.

“Ever since she first put pen to paper, Nona’s transformed rhythm into a salve for the soul, fighting chaos and discord with funk and spirit. Rhythm is the heartbeat of this EP, a pulse fueled by Nona’s partners in Soul Clap. She’s penned four new songs for “true believers,” for right now, for moments packed with possibility. Nona brings jazz maestro Jason Miles aboard to free the mind and raise the freak flag on “Funkin’ for the World” while groove master’s Selan and Nile Rodgers amplify the one-two punch of her words and rhymes on “Scream.” She propels love to blissful heights on “Ooo Ooo” and weaves it through the vibrations on”I Feel Joy (Feel the Spirit).” No matter where the needle drops, Nona puts the evolution in revolutions (per minute). Bask in the joyful spell she casts: “This is your time!” -Christian John Wikane

Fresh for 2019, Soul Clap returns with “Ready To Freak”, a disco infused tribute to New York City nightlife, featuring the legendary Kathy Brown on vocals. The release is the US based duo’s latest excursion on their eponymous Soul Clap Records since their collaboration with Funkadelic and features 4 special versions Ready To Freak any discerning dancefloor, boombox or Walkman.
The "Disco Mix" lives up to its name, edited and arranged with Morgan Wiley (Midnight Magic, Hercules & Love Affair, etc..) it takes the melodies and basslines of the original demo and loads them up with Wiley's keyboard wizardry over live drums. On the "Disco Dub", Soul Clap’s Eli aka Bamboozle and Wiley flip the groove with a Roland RX7 drum machine for that 80’s proto-house feel. Then on the flip-side, Soul Clap’s Charlie aka Lonely C pulls out all stops for a pumped up piece of floor shaking house music on his "Club Electronique". Finally, his "Dub Electronique" makes things oh-so-DJ-friendly with a bass driven drum work out that has already gotten massive reaction during Soul Clap's DJ sets!

Detroit's 'Disco au Courant' Pontchartrain brings his kind of Funk and Nu Disco to Soul Clap Records with The Citalmina EP. "Citalmina", a name of Aztec origin that means 'Shooting Star', perfectly describes Pontchartrain's title track which rolls along propelling the dance floor to a place of magic and mystery. DJ's are gonna love this one. Then things slow right down on "Where Do We Go Now", a balearic cut complete with moving synth arpeggiation, smooth pads and plenty of percussion. "Rio Magdalena" rounds out the body of music taking us into a totally different deep dance direction that feels both inspired by the past yet entirely futuristic. And as if the mark hadn't already been hit we're very proud to enlist the remix duties of Detroit keyboard/talkbox heavyweight Hazmat to give this track about the funkiest facelift we could have imagined; awash with synths, sound effects and a killer guitar solo at the end that will leave minds blown!
