Life behind the Berlin Wall, before the fall. Once there was DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik), otherwise known as East Germany. Verging on the ruins of the 2nd world war, in the fog of the socialist utopia, there was a widespread scene fighting against corporations and restrictions. Die neuen Bands, that was the manifesto, a number of small alternative bands facing the efforts of the post-punk (and even post-industrial) revolution. This was happening right after the English new wave or the Neue Deutsche Welle (the western counterpart). A musical resistance, a counterculture, spreading all over the country the clandestine way. An enduring dangerous strategy that brought to life many artistic figures, way ahead of their time. Such is the case of Frank Bretschneider (Stein im Brett, Kriminelle Tanzkapelle) still one oft he most prolific glitch producer (founder of the influential imprint Rastermusic), Ornament & Verbrechen the east-Berlin combo ran by brothers Ronald e Robert Lippok (To Rococo Rot) and Reinhard Lakomy a true innovator in the vein of Klaus Schulze. The ghost of an era, a social turmoil that eventually had an impact on our daily routine.

Inspired by a weird mixture between Aldous Huxley's visionary work and some biblical myths, Eyeless in Gaza, (formed in 1980) are one of the most original and creative bands emerging from the early 80's British post-punk scene. An intimate duo line up featuring Martyn Bates - vocals, guitar, organ, and Peter Becker - drums, bass, synth. "Caught in Flux" originally released in 1981 on Cherry Red and reissued here in its original format LP + 12" is their second album. The result of a one-take studio session with no overdubs. A perfectly balanced combination of various elements arising from post-punk, art rock, ambient music, and psychedelia. This was an important step towards a form of music where all these influences were organically integrated into a highly purified sound experience.

Formed in Sheffield in 1978 and originally known as just "The", Artery is a band that saw several changes in the line-up throughout the '80s. Supported by John Peel and often compared to Joy Division their music incorporates various fundamental elements of the British post-punk aesthetic. Originally released in 1982 on Red Flame records, "Oceans" was Artery's debut mini-LP including some absolute gems such as "into the Garden" and "Afterwards" infectious anthemic tracks of the post-punk era.

Genre:Rock / Indie
Born out of the ashes of Alternative TV, The Good Missionaries embodied Mark Perry's new and advanced Experimental-Post-Punk vision. Avoiding all kinds of average Rock cliches, Perry got more and more deeply into an uncompromised form of music. A totally new area where his solid Punk roots were confronted by a more free, radical approach to the sound material. During their lifetime The Good Missionaries toured and gigged with other distinctive, unconventional bands such as The Fall, The Pop Group, Crass, Scritti Politti... Recorded live on their 1979 tour, Fire from Heaven comes as tangible proof of the band's explosive energy on stage. An infectious mix of electric noise, raw grooves, space, and resolute Punk attitude. This brand new, digitally remastered edition comes as the first vinyl reissue since its 1979 original release. Don't miss it!!!

Originally conceived for a multi-media installation, the music contained in this album represents one of Lewis and Gilbert's earliest steps in their immediate post-WIRE period. With the band's break-up in February 1980, the duo began to take a more explorative approach through various projects (Dome, Kupol...). Clearly they needed something different and more open out. That's how they started to work on the Mzui multi-media installation, some sort of evolving work in progress that eventually took place at London's Waterloo Gallery in August 1981. Joined by artist Russell Mills, the ex-WIRE duo built an imaginary space where all sorts of sculptures, found objects, ambiance sounds and audience reactions were components of the same multiple experience. Some time afterward Cherry Red Records proposed a recording project based on the mixing of the resulting tapes. The whole Mzui album, originally released in 1982, is about the notion of sound as landscape, and the soundscape as a guide to an extended form of listening and a unique aural experience. Not a very different concept than Brian Eno's ambient experiments of the same period, but less lyrical and more dark-urban oriented. For too many years out of print, finally digitally remastered, here's the first vinyl reissue of this historical album. As for its 1981's first release, the record comes packaged in a six pages 12" foldable printed sheet with photos in a plain black sleeve, within a clear PVC cover. Ltd to 500 copies.

Record Store Day 2020 Release.

Searching for new languages beyond the bitter and nihilist dialect of punk, bands like Gaz Nevada, Litfiba, CCCP, Diaframma, Neon, and many others, began spreading their message all along the Italian peninsula during the early eighties and many of the members of these bands are now some of the best musicians/producers in the Italian independent music panorama (Giovanni Lindo Ferretti, Piero Pelù/Litfiba, Bisca, etc.). 16 tracks by 16 Italian underground bands from 1982-1984: bands who faded into oblivion before ever releasing anything of their own on vinyl. It should, however, be stated that if these sixteen bands had been found on an album, EP or single, they certainly would not have lowered the average quality of albums in that genre…not even in terms of sound quality, which has actually been improved upon here (considering that the original tapes had been lying around collecting dust for at least a quarter of a century) by careful restoration.

Influential post-punk act and electronic producers all teamed up with local legends depicting almost 20 years of a constant evolution. It is not simply the Italian way to rock’n’roll, hereby three generations of artists facing the banks of Arno river forged a memorable artistic season. Stalwart ok kosmische psychedelia Sensation’s Fix altogether with EBM forerunners Neon, astonishing etno-world travelers Zeit (the Italian answer to late Popol Vuh ?) and electro pioneer Alexander Robotnick , no wave heroes Rinf and rock in opposition alumni Bella Band (Cramps Records). 23 tracks split between two lps, a revelation of sort.

Matita Emostatica' is the re-issue of a sought after compilation connecting the most underrated outsider artists of the Milan scene, in the early eighties. The amazing artwork is the creation of influential designer and photographer Roberto Masotti, a very well known figure in the avantgarde and jazz realm (he made astonishing portraits for the likes of Anthony Braxton, Art Ensemble Of Chicago, Carla Bley, etc.)
The compilation was produced in 1981 by Al Aprile and released by Materiali Sonori. Among the 10 artists you can find future journalists, unstoppable record collectors, renowned photographers and influential underground persona ... just scroll down the album and read the names of Monofonic Orchestra, Angelo Vaggi, Baker Street Band, Al Aprile, Roberto Masotti and many others. The result was quite unbelievable, ranging from small cosmic opus to avantgarde symphonies and asymmetrical etno-world jams. In the end ‘Matita Emostatica’ was quite in line with the efforts coming from the rest of Europe and the other side of the ocean, so to speak the compilation wouldn’t be out of place in the Ralph or Crammed Discs catalogue. A postcard from a country that is no more.

Here you can find in detail, the complete versions of three tracks recorded live in Lubeck (D) during the 1986 European tour and previously issued on 7". Four songs from a series of acoustic sessions recorded in 1988 and previously issued on singles and compilations. A song from the Kina / Act 1990, split single, and finally the 1994 recordings featuring Marco Brunet on guitar and vocals. In the original 1996 liner notes, Kina wrote: All these recordings have been published on records that will never be reissued again. Hopefully you will be pleased to find them all together in this collection. Now, if we compare the first and last piece, we'll find a big difference in terms of sound and playing quality. It's still us though, luckily we grew up and we've changed too, and we're so proud and happy of our past and present. Always yours Sergio, Alberto, Gianpiero, Marco, Stefano and Lalli.

One year after the release of Kina's first album, Irreale Realtà, which was a good proof of the Italian Hardcore scene vitality and a confirmation that Kina was definitely one of the most original and creative bands on the European scene.Even though, 1986 was a transition year. Punk began to loose its energy and while many of the bands from the first wave were gone, Kina decided to work on their second album, and for this they chose a studio owned by a former Hippy' in Aosta. They entered the studio with very clear ideas. Velocity? yes! just a little bit less than before, Melody? yes, and in this case a little more than before! Solos? Sure! and wild too, Short songs? Of course, even if now they feel like trying something different as well. After one month of studio work, they finally got a concise and intense album. Some kind of raw and rusty thing coming from big and extremely loud amps. The new path seems to allow the band to explore new sound territories where a new kind of melodic lines mix up with past experiences and new genres, Metal included. It's a sad and dark sounding album including songs which would become classics in the band's repertoire. And what about the artwork? The front cover album has a very, very strong image! An airbrush retouched picture - by Salvatore Cosentino - of an angry homeless who almost seems coming out of the cover.

Naphta was born in 1978 but differently from the most of other bands from Bologna at that time, they came up with a very peculiar Jazz-Rock formula mixed up with elements from the almost "out of time" Progressive genre. The result was unsettling! Their music was mostly improvised with no apparent distinctions between rhythm section and soloists, in fact everybody in the group could have taken a solo at any time but in close relation with the others. All members in the group were classically trained musicians who were in full control of their actions, all except the singer Marco “Cigaro” Cigarini whose vocal work and his nonsense lyrics were the most far out aspect and possibly the most fascinating element in the mix. Such music was probably too demanding for the general audience's attitude of the time and the band disappeared not so long after the release of their excellent tape. If compared to the original cassette, the present LP reissue includes two extra tracks, “La femme Fatale” and “Tac”, a couple of unearthed pieces which complete the picture of one of the most unconventional creatures in the history of Italian underground music.

This is the definitive reissue of the long out of print first album from Italian experimental-rock band La 1919. Originally released in 1987 by ADN, the Italian Recommended Records branch, Ars srA was an early example of a long distance collaboration album as result of a virtuosic exchange of tapes between the Milan based duo and the legendary American guitarist Henry Kaiser and Canadian maverick sound artist John Oswald. The resulting music sounds like a perfect blend of '70s Art-Rock elements and '80s electronics. An eclectic mix of "Frith" oriented guitars, cold synthetic sounds and programmed drum machine beats. Some sort of sonic no-man's land where elements from the Post-Rock in Opposition aesthetic meet the experimental side of New Wave. The album includes a declared tribute to the Frith-Laswell-Maher seminal coalition, via a metronomic version of "Killing Time", the title track from Massacre's first album. The LP comes with updated graphics and contents including unpublished pictures and various memorabilia + CD with extra tracks. In few words: Highly recommended!

Milan, 1979, only two years had passed since the explosion of punk but it seemed like ten years had passed, 1977 had inexorably changed the destiny of a generation of musicians. Milan in those years felt a bit like Manchester, a city in black and white, with monuments grayed by smog, busy and still far from becoming the “Milan to drink” of the mid-80s. The music scene was totally disconnected from the rest of the Italian underground, the bands were born and imploded within a few months. The inputs that arrived thanks to the English weekly New Musical Express and some Italian fanzines were essential to know what happened across the channel almost in real time. The concerts at the 2001 Odyssey, a club where almost all the really important post-punk bands performed, were fundamental to understand and feel part of something that resembled a revolution, a movement that in those years produced little in terms of discography but that today, after almost forty years, we reveal the absolute uniqueness of the proposals of the protagonists of that Milanese season. Sharp guitars, primordial drum machines, synthesizers bought at a high price and 4 tracks cassette recorders were the tools used to affirm their belonging to a creative movement that developed simultaneously throughout Europe.

From the heart of the late '70s / early '80s British underground scene, an extraordinary album at the very edge between art-rock, and punk. The Work were a full electric band featuring Tim Hodkinson, his very first project after the seminal experience of Henry Cow, and three younger maverick figures from the London underground scene. Guitarist Bill Gilonis (The Lowest Note, News from Babel, The Hat Shoes), bassist Mick Hobbs (Officer, Half Japanese), and Drummer Rick Wilson (Family Fodder). The Work embodies the crucial step between two unrepeatable decades in music. An unprecedented mixture of rock complexity and punk attitude. Unapologetically raw and direct, Slow Crimes, The Work's first album originally released in 1982, stands as one of the most essential and uncompromising pieces of vinyl in the field of experimental rock. This is a special edition LP + CD + printed inner sleeve with unpublished pictures and various memorabilia. The CD contains the album + 3 extra tracks from The Work's first and only 7" including the anthemic "I hate America". Includes printed inner sleeve.

Windopen were a proudly underground band from Bologna. Active between the 70's and the 80's, they only recorded a cassette on Harpo's Music and a single for Cramps Records. At the exact edge between masterpiece and madness, here is the first ever vinyl reissue of their original cassette, released on 1979 plus two unreleased tracks and tracks from their single of 1980. A classic item from the golden era of Italian New Wave. A perfect mixture between deep Punk-R'n'R spirit, urban slang lyrics and pure nonsense. "Sei in banana dura" was a really big underground hit!

Release:2018 / EU – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
Long awaited re-issue for one of the most influential and controversial post-punk combos of the 'Granducato era'.
After more than three decades I Refuse It! are still quite a great thing. Rock’n’roll’s later reaching of higher peaks of brutality finally made acceptable what once was considered noise and chaos and now make them appear just a bit less subversive, but their impact is still strongly felt. So, collecting and publishing their complete output in one album is definitely an historical act. Differently from Cronache del videotopo, the CD published in 2005 by the glorious Wide Records, the present double LP includes also their great version of Atto di forza numero 10 from I Ragazzi del Sole, a real gem from the Sixties Italian beat repertoire. Even if the Internet seems to have saved from oblivion any obscure document of the international hardcore punk saga, all these songs together in vinyl represent the best celebration for a band who, back in the day, really tried to stay away from the safe track of the business when it was very complicated if not self-destructive to do so.
They were certainly a bit too far out for a large part of the aficionados of “classic punk” but deserved attention, at least for those who began to be tired of the old stereotypes. It’s no coincidence that reviewing the Permanent Scar/Sfregio permanente casette in the magazine Il Mucchio Selvaggio I described their style as “experimental hardcore” and “a sort of Meat Puppets oriented sound”.
Finally, between 1982 and 1983, Italian punk got its spot on the international map. In fact, even if there were already some Italian punk bands, it was not before the emergence of the hardcore movement that we could really start talking about a real Italian scene. Needless to add that this was not just a simple musical issue, back in the day, for many of us, hardcore punk was mainly an attitude and a way of life.
In Tuscany, the whole scene became known under the acronym of GDCH (Granducato Hardcore) and I Refuse It! (together with CCM, Wardogs, Putrid Fever, Traumatic, Juggernaut and others) became one of its most significant bands.
Because of their varied and multiple inspirations and tendency to experiment, it's hard to consider I Refuse It! as simply a hardcore band. This 2LP collection compiles their complete recorded output for the first time and is an essential piece of Italian punk history.

La Maison story is essentially an oral one, like for many bands in those years. Casual encounters, records found and exchanged, demos recorded at home, live club shows in a country that in those years was changing socially and culturally at the speed of light, and was molding itself at the rate of a fluid modernity. The tracks of this album, all recorded between 1980 and 1984, tell the story of a world where synthesizers and drum machines coexist and replace traditional rock instruments. Where homemade overdubs broaden the spectrum of sonic possibilities and the "cut and paste" of tapes is done, literally, by hand. A world in which the first infatuations for wave and industrial are contaminated with no prejudice by the rhythms and sounds of funk and disco. A milestone for those who want to understand the vibrant landscape of Italian music of the eighties, many times too hectic and elusive to be captured in real time. Twenty one tracks on CD and twelve on vinyl, most of them never published before, see the light of day more than thirty years after their creation.

Finally reissued on vinyl by Spittle, the seminal compilation of the post-punk undercurrents of northern Italy. Great Complotto is been an amazing story, one you would like to live yourself, even more than 30 years later. A typical story of suburban Italy, based in Pordenone, when creativity was on top and the shortage of technical resources didn’t keep the dream from coming true. That was the driving force of the often underestimated Italian punk scene.

What exactly happened in the Italian underground / post punk scene 30 years ago, is not entirely clear. Therefore, this collection of 13 incredible tunes helps tracking down the feeling and focuses on the blurry images of a period that was mixing influences from the UK/USA scenes with a more “national” approach to new music developments. The damage began in 1977 when a series of urban / suburban musical agitators, whether skilled or complete amateurs, decided to embrace instruments as weapons for a war against sonic stereotypes. Here’s the result: a multiform sonic attack that marks the history of a movement that may have remained local in most cases but whose echo reflected the amazing creativity of a generation.
