Der Westen Ist Am Ende: The Complete Sessions
LP | 2016 | EU | Original (Spittle)

Release:2016 / EU – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
In the summer of 1986, Adrian Sherwood (On-U Sound) went to Florence, Italy for a different kind of vacation: to make a record with noise-funk band Rinf. The sweaty sessions stretched for weeks, resuming in London, to whip these loose tracks into shape. Lacerba released the final mixes on two 12" EPs that have been out of print for thirty years. For the first time, this album compiles the fully remastered complete sessions in a new package that cheekily references the testosterone-driven porn-obsessed lyrics, a beautiful three-color silkscreen + custom die-cut jacket. Play loud!

Release:1981 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Rock / Indie
Released on a 3-sided double-LPFollowing the breakup of Cambridge's avant-rock legends, Henry Cow, guitarist Fred Frith moved to NYC in 1979, and soon found himself deep in the heart of the city's robust post-punk and free-jazz scenes, performing with Bill Laswell and Fred Maher, from the group Material, as a power trio of sorts under the moniker of Massacre. The group quickly garnered a reputation around town, and around the world for that matter, as a heavy and heady band that experimented greatly with rhythm, time signatures, and tone. As Frith himself put it, "the group was a direct response to New York. It was a very aggressive group, kind of my reaction to the whole New York rock club scene." Massacre released one album, Killing Time, before disbanding for nearly 20 years. Their first wave as a group crashed fast and furiously and this one album, recorded in part live in Paris, and in part at Brooklyn's OAO Studio, is a perfect encapsulation of early 80s NYC. In addition to the original album, first released on Celluloid in 1981, this deluxe 3 sided 2LP includes 8 bonus tracks recorded live between 80 and 81 and The Stone in San Francisco, and Inroads and CBGB's in NYC. Avant-jazz-post-punk-noise of the highest order from several legends and one of the most important projects Frith and Laswell were ever involved in, reissued by Spittle.

Long awaited re-issue for one of the most influential and controversial post-punk combos of the 'Granducato era'.After more than three decades I Refuse It! are still quite a great thing. Rock’n’roll’s later reaching of higher peaks of brutality finally made acceptable what once was considered noise and chaos and now make them appear just a bit less subversive, but their impact is still strongly felt. So, collecting and publishing their complete output in one album is definitely an historical act. Differently from Cronache del videotopo, the CD published in 2005 by the glorious Wide Records, the present double LP includes also their great version of Atto di forza numero 10 from I Ragazzi del Sole, a real gem from the Sixties Italian beat repertoire. Even if the Internet seems to have saved from oblivion any obscure document of the international hardcore punk saga, all these songs together in vinyl represent the best celebration for a band who, back in the day, really tried to stay away from the safe track of the business when it was very complicated if not self-destructive to do so.They were certainly a bit too far out for a large part of the aficionados of “classic punk” but deserved attention, at least for those who began to be tired of the old stereotypes. It’s no coincidence that reviewing the Permanent Scar/Sfregio permanente casette in the magazine Il Mucchio Selvaggio I described their style as “experimental hardcore” and “a sort of Meat Puppets oriented sound”.Finally, between 1982 and 1983, Italian punk got its spot on the international map. In fact, even if there were already some Italian punk bands, it was not before the emergence of the hardcore movement that we could really start talking about a real Italian scene. Needless to add that this was not just a simple musical issue, back in the day, for many of us, hardcore punk was mainly an attitude and a way of life.In Tuscany, the whole scene became known under the acronym of GDCH (Granducato Hardcore) and I Refuse It! (together with CCM, Wardogs, Putrid Fever, Traumatic, Juggernaut and others) became one of its most significant bands.Because of their varied and multiple inspirations and tendency to experiment, it's hard to consider I Refuse It! as simply a hardcore band. This 2LP collection compiles their complete recorded output for the first time and is an essential piece of Italian punk history.

Neon was one of the most active bands in the 80s Italian new wave scene. The band was born first as a duo at the end of the 70's, a part of Florence's underground culture, they soon stood out for their Kraftwerk inspired synth sound, which made their style a unique 80s specimen, together with a new-romantic and post-punk thought similar to bands like Joy Division, Ultravox and Human League. In 1980, the band got off to an electronic start with the single "Information of death", and later, through several lineup changes, they managed to synthetize a mix of obsessive electro sounds, obscure atmospheres and original pop melodies which reached full form in later works likeMy Blues is You(1983),Dark Age(1984), andRed Light(1986). Those three classic 80s darkwave 12”s are to be reissued by Spittle in limited editions of 500 copies. Aside from the Ritualsalbum (also available from Spittle), these are the finest examples of work from one of the 80s Italian scene’s finest groups.

What exactly happened in the Italian underground / post punk scene 30 years ago, is not entirely clear. Therefore, this collection of 13 incredible tunes helps tracking down the feeling and focuses on the blurry images of a period that was mixing influences from the UK/USA scenes with a more “national” approach to new music developments. The damage began in 1977 when a series of urban / suburban musical agitators, whether skilled or complete amateurs, decided to embrace instruments as weapons for a war against sonic stereotypes. Here’s the result: a multiform sonic attack that marks the history of a movement that may have remained local in most cases but whose echo reflected the amazing creativity of a generation.

Collected here in a deluxe boxed-set for Record Store Day 2018 is four of the finest Spittle compilations of 1980s Italian post-punk, art-rock, and synth-wave. Milano New Wave: 1980-83 Redux, Samples Only, iV3SCR (The Great Complotto 2), and Body Section feature some of the heavy hitters of the era including Die Form, Frigidaire Tango, Rinf, and more as well as more obscure artists who may have only appeared ever on these comps.Milano New Wave: 1980-83 Redux: Twelve tracks that recount the salient steps of the brief but intense career of four Milanese bands from the post-punk of Other Side, to the oblique funk of State Of Art, to the Kraftwerk influences of La Maison, to the electro pop-wave of Jeunesse d'Ivoire. "Boris Karloff" features Kubrix and 2+2=5 playing with La Maison, forming the group known as Entourage L'Asino. These four bands illustrate the mood of an underground scene that burned out rapidly, mostly due to the indifference of the media and recording industry during those years.

Windopen were a proudly underground band from Bologna. Active between the 70's and the 80's, they only recorded a cassette on Harpo's Music and a single for Cramps Records. At the exact edge between masterpiece and madness, here is the first ever vinyl reissue of their original cassette, released on 1979 plus two unreleased tracks and tracks from their single of 1980. A classic item from the golden era of Italian New Wave. A perfect mixture between deep Punk-R'n'R spirit, urban slang lyrics and pure nonsense. "Sei in banana dura" was a really big underground hit!

Tribal Noise were formed in Bologna in 1983, the first nucleus was composed by Cesare Ferioli on drums, Federico Poggipollini on bass, Andrea D'Alessandro on guitar, Giuseppe Yu Guerra on keyboards and Giampiero Babbini on vocals. At the end of 1983, the line up slightly changed with the entry of Fabrizio "Felix" Frassineti in place of Andrea D'Alessandro. The group was noted for the lyrics in Italian, their goth and post-punk approach and a series of compositions akin to the mastery of Joy Division, The Cure, or Siouxsie & The Banshees. This anthology collects all of their works, the Ep C.A.S. records and a series of tracks that appeared on tape compilation and fanzines. Such a great discovery of the earliest Italian underground of the mid-eighties.

Available for the first time in a remastered edition (LP with CD included), it contains the anastatic reprint of flyers and documents that accompanied the original version. Originally published by Blu Bus – the label related to the band itself – the record is a truly classic in the vein of early Husker Du, fusing heartfelt melodies with a fast and furious approach.

Inascoltable is the first album from Bolognese group Skiantos, the band that added a completely different flavor to the rock underground with their delirious performances and over the top lyrics. Released through Oderso Rubini's Harpo's Bazaar label (later Italian Records) in 1977 on cassette format, the album was recorded in one night in November 1977 in a session that was almost improvised, and was later printed on LP in 1979. This reissue from the original master does full justice to the insanely creative playing of the band fronted by Freak Antoni, who were true forerunners of demented rock and virtuous artists capable of colorfully interpreting all the non-standard rock movements from the British and American underground. This record wouldn't be out of place in the Zappa discography, although the whole turned out a little bit more punk...

La Maison story is essentially an oral one, like for many bands in those years. Casual encounters, records found and exchanged, demos recorded at home, live club shows in a country that in those years was changing socially and culturally at the speed of light, and was molding itself at the rate of a fluid modernity. The tracks of this album, all recorded between 1980 and 1984, tell the story of a world where synthesizers and drum machines coexist and replace traditional rock instruments. Where homemade overdubs broaden the spectrum of sonic possibilities and the "cut and paste" of tapes is done, literally, by hand. A world in which the first infatuations for wave and industrial are contaminated with no prejudice by the rhythms and sounds of funk and disco. A milestone for those who want to understand the vibrant landscape of Italian music of the eighties, many times too hectic and elusive to be captured in real time. Twenty one tracks on CD and twelve on vinyl, most of them never published before, see the light of day more than thirty years after their creation.

After the break-up of her Milanese all-girl punk group, Kandeggina Gang, Giovanna Coletti (a.k.a. Jo Squillo) along with her boyfriend, Kaos Rock's bass player Gianni Muciaccia, recorded a solo album. 'Girl Senza Paura'('Girl With No Fear') was released in 1981 under the moniker of Jo Squillo And The Eletrix. The LP continued in the early punk attitude, but was more refined, faster, less raw and instinctive than the previous repertoire. Another classic piece of early '80s Italian punk-wave back in print on LP.

Finally reissued on vinyl by Spittle, the seminal compilation of the post-punk undercurrents of northern Italy. Great Complotto is been an amazing story, one you would like to live yourself, even more than 30 years later. A typical story of suburban Italy, based in Pordenone, when creativity was on top and the shortage of technical resources didn’t keep the dream from coming true. That was the driving force of the often underestimated Italian punk scene.
