Half Purple / Half Black Vinyl! LA's Death Valley Girls have made a name for themselves by churning out a desert-blasted blend of rowdy proto-punk and primitive heavy metal steeped in cosmic idealism and third-eye consciousness. Their first new offering since tearing a hole in the sky with their 2018 album Darkness Rains comes in the form of a two-song seven-inch, "Breakthrough." The title track is a cover by Atomic Rooster, though the band discovered the track through a rendition by Nigerian outfit The Funkees. With its grimy guitar riffs, fire-and-brimstone organ, and combative chorus, it's as if the song was originally written with Death Valley Girls' brand of stark transcendental rock in mind. But it wasn't just the pulse and melody that drew the band to the song. "It spoke to me because of the lyrics about breaking free from an invisible prison_ we all have invisible or visible prisons we are trapped in," says vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Bonnie Bloomgarden. The song discovery coincided with the band's interest in Damien Echols of West Memphis 3 and his ability to endure his imprisonment by learning to astral project through meditation. The b-side is another cover - a ramped up version Daniel Johnston's loud-quiet-loud anthem "Rock 'N' Roll / EGA." It's a total rager, but it's also a bittersweet song for Death Valley Girls as they had the rare privilege to briefly serve as Johnston's backing band. Ultimately, the two songs have a deep and profound connection to Death Valley Girls, both in their spirit and in their aural alignment.

Parasite kicks off with the title track, a rowdy throwback to a younger, angrier
incarnation of the band. Crafted in the wake of the election and during a tumultuous
period in the band members' private lives, "Parasite" is pure catharsis. "During the
making of our last album, I didn't want to scream anymore, I just wanted to sing and
focus on melody. When we came to this recording, I just wanted to scream and
curse," says guitarist/vocalist Julia Kugel. If the EP is meant as a journey through the
various stages of the band's career, it certainly storms out of the gate with the same
kind of piss-and-vinegar of their eponymous debut. And while "Wipe Out" is another
rowdy venture, with bassist Meredith Franco taking over the lead vocal duties over a
steady barrage of pointed power-chords, it also showcases the rousing choruses that
elevated the trio from underground heroines to an internationally renowned garage
act. Despite the adverse times, The Coathangers' mastery of pop cannot be contained
forever, as is evident in the EP's single "Captain's Dead", with its sultry verses,
triumphant chorus, and a bombastic freak-out of noisy guitar. The journey through
The Coathangers' musical evolution leads to a revamped version of "Down Down" off
2016's Nosebleed Weekend LP and the smoky twang of "Drifter", in which
drummer/vocalist Stephanie Luke demonstrates her knack for solid Dusty Springfieldstyle
ballads.

Where L.A. Witch's self-titled album oozed with vibe and atmosphere, with the whole mix draped in reverb, sonically placing the band in some distant realm, broadcast across some unknown chasm of time, Play With Fire comes crashing out of the gate with a bold, brash, in-your-face rocker "Fire Starter." The authoritative opener is a deliberate mission statement. "Play With Fire is a suggestion to make things happen," says Sanchez. "Don't fear mistakes or the future. Take a chance. Say and do what you really feel, even if nobody agrees with your ideas. These are feelings that have stopped me in the past. I want to inspire others to be freethinkers even if it causes a little burn." And by that line of reasoning, "Fire Starter" becomes a call to action, an anthem against apathy. From there, the album segues into the similarly bodacious rocker "Motorcycle Boy"_a feisty love song inspired by classic cinema outlaws like Mickey Rourke, Marlon Brando, and Steve McQueen. At track three, we hear L.A. Witch expand into new territories as "Dark Horse" unfurls a mixture of dustbowl folk, psychedelic breakdowns, and fire-and-brimstone organ lines. And from there, the band only gets more adventurous. Play With Fire is a bold new journey that retains L.A. Witch's siren-song mystique, nostalgic spirit, and contemporary cool. Despite the stylistic breadth of the record, there is a unifying timbre across the album's nine tracks, as if the trio of young musicians is bound together as a collective of old souls tapping into the sounds of their previous youth.

Your phone, your TV, your computer - who (or what) is watching you? It's an oft-asked question in the digital age, and one that The Paranoyds echoed when it comes to the origins of their name. Part of a generation immersed in oversharing and ease of surveillance, The Paranoyds know better than anyone, it's scary out there. But the band's fearless pursuit of a good time won't stop them from crafting the kind of gritty, Southern California garage rock that refuses to hide.

The Paranoyds' debut release on Suicide Squeeze offers a taste of what The Paranoyds have been crafting. The Los Angeles four-piece of Laila Hashemi (keyboardist-vocals), Lexi Funston (guitars/vocals),Staz Lindes (bass/vocals) and David Ruiz (drums, vocals) share a mission to craft songs with the gritty spunk and dark playfulness of a cult-classic splatter film. "Hungry Sam" is a binge-worthy feast of chugging guitars and belly-rounded drums. B-side "Trade Our Sins" is a cautionary slowdance fit for the end of the night or the end of the world. Their self-described "sister vocal act" shares the snarling, over-it-but-totally-into-it vocals throughout their songs, moving from dirty surf-pop guitar jams to power-packed garage rock.

"That dichotomy between dark imagery and danceable, inventive rock has always
been a hallmark of Minus The Bear's sound" - Noisey Minus the Bear is a product of
the first two decades of this century. From their first show in 2001 to their
impending dissolution at the end of 2018, the Seattle band thrived on the musical
awakening in the era of the mp3, the internet, poptimism, and the crosspollinations
generated from an expanded consciousness of new music forms. With their final EP,
Fair Enough, Minus the Bear closes the book on their hybrid of art-rock, indie pop,
and warehouse party appeal. The opening track "Fair Enough" went through a
variety of permutations before the band found new meaning in its lyrical lament of
lost passions and finding "the exact moment we turned it off". The other songs of
Fair Enough are a continuation and culmination of Minus the Bear's diverse sounds.
The up-tempo drumbeats, lush electronics, and nimble guitar work that initially set
them apart are on full display during "Viaduct". "Dinosaur" has the groove of early
hits of "Fine + 2 PTS", but crafted with the understated Steely Dan-eque delivery of
their more current slow jams. The EP closes with a nod to their ongoing remix
collaborations, this time with a rave-up reinvention of "Invisible" by Sombear.

There's an enclave of the punk world where the music still sounds like an austere
distillation of America's forlorn dream. It's the sound of an old jukebox spinning a
Ronettes 45 through a broken speaker, the kid in the garage figuring out the 1-4-5
progression on guitar, the steady thump of the kick drum banging in 4/4 time
through a dilapidated PA. LA's SadGirl sound a lot those early American punks_the
miscreants that preceded the nihilists. Their songs sound more rooted in the wake
of Motor City soul, Enchantment Under The Sea prom ballads, and Pacific Northwest
surf rock than in the formula laid out by The Ramones, but there is still something in
their reverb-and-tremolo pop that feels like a reminder of America's decay.
On their new 7" for Suicide Squeeze Records, SadGirl not only harnesses a golden
oldies sound with "Breakfast for 2", they touch upon its traditions as well. "It's a
follow up to one of the first tracks I wrote for the project, `Breakfast Is Over'. It's
meant to be a sequel in line with rock n' roll and oldies tunes like "It's My Party" and
"Judy's Turn To Cry", or "Johnny B. Goode" and "Bye Bye Johnny," says
guitarist/vocalist Misha Lindes. The flipside features a cover of the surf classic "Jack
the Ripper" by Link Wray. "I'm a big fan," says Lindes, "but I'm also a huge fan of the
late Israeli neo-rockabilly / surf guitarist Charlie Megira, who passed away in
November 2016, and Charlie has an amazing version of "Jack the Ripper," says
Lindes. "So our version is really an homage to Charlie as much as it is to Link Wray."

Punk rock exploded on the international scene just as Spain was awakening from the end of Franco’s 35-year regime. And while new freedoms for an old country meant a blossoming of art and culture, the combination of geographical obstacles, a struggling economy and prejudices towards the countries of the Iberian Peninsula meant that the Spanish underground music scene operated with added urgency, it also operated in relative isolation. However, as anyone who’s dug into Spanish punk could tell you, the scene has an unparalleled vibrancy.

The Puritan Julianna Barwick Remix Brown & Black Splatter Vinyl Edition
7" | 2017 | US | Original (Suicide Squeeze)

Continuing her journey into uncharted waters, Julianna Barwick's remix of This Will Destroy You's serene composition The Puritan is an exercise in both refinement and intensification.

Taken from TWDY's viscerally cinematic full-length studio LP Another Language (out now on Suicide Squeeze), the Brooklyn-based songstress elicits an invisible structure from the track's warbling textures and oceanic vastness, distilling and reconstituting the band's reflective soundscape into a rarefied elemental form.

The resulting single is pristine and subtle; a fully immersive pairing of melodic piano with layers of decaying tape textures, anchored and paradoxically tethered to submersed bassline programming and distant, hyperborean 4/4 kick drum.

By once again shifting shapes and adding emphasis with the beats she does and doesn't drop, Barwick is able to forge a totally new path for both herself and instrumental-stalwarts This Will Destroy You.

A feat not easily accomplished on either count. Like so much of Barwick's work, The Puritan remix sounds as if it is both sinking, and, floating.

The Puritan 7" is limited to 1000 copies on brown and black splatter color vinyl and includes a download card.
