Darkness Rains Colored Vinyl Edition

Release:2018 / EU – Original
Genre:Rock / Indie
At the core of Death Valley Girls, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Bonnie Bloomgarden andguitarist Larry Schemel channel a modern spin on Funhouse's sonic exorcisms, ZZ Top'sdesert-blasted riffage, and Sabbath's occult menace. On their third album Darkness Rains,Death Valley Girls churn out the hypercharged scuzzy rock every generation yearns for,but there is a more subversive force percolating beneath the surface that imbues theband with an exhilarating cosmic energy. Album opener "More Dead" is a rousing wakeup call, with a hypnotic guitar riff and an intoxicating blown-out solo underscoringBloomgarden's proclamation that you're "more dead than alive." The pace builds with"(One Less Thing) Before I Die", a distillate of Detroit's proto-punk sound. At trackthree, Death Valley Girls hit their stride with "Disaster (Is What We're After)", a ragerthat takes the most boisterous moments off Exile On Main Street and injects it withZeppelin's devil's-note blues. Darkness Rains retains its intoxicating convocations acrossten tracks, climaxing with the hypnotic guitar drones and cult-like chants of "TV In JailOn Mars."

"That dichotomy between dark imagery and danceable, inventive rock has alwaysbeen a hallmark of Minus The Bear's sound" - Noisey Minus the Bear is a product ofthe first two decades of this century. From their first show in 2001 to theirimpending dissolution at the end of 2018, the Seattle band thrived on the musicalawakening in the era of the mp3, the internet, poptimism, and the crosspollinationsgenerated from an expanded consciousness of new music forms. With their final EP,Fair Enough, Minus the Bear closes the book on their hybrid of art-rock, indie pop,and warehouse party appeal. The opening track "Fair Enough" went through avariety of permutations before the band found new meaning in its lyrical lament oflost passions and finding "the exact moment we turned it off". The other songs ofFair Enough are a continuation and culmination of Minus the Bear's diverse sounds. The up-tempo drumbeats, lush electronics, and nimble guitar work that initially setthem apart are on full display during "Viaduct". "Dinosaur" has the groove of earlyhits of "Fine + 2 PTS", but crafted with the understated Steely Dan-eque delivery oftheir more current slow jams. The EP closes with a nod to their ongoing remixcollaborations, this time with a rave-up reinvention of "Invisible" by Sombear.

There's an enclave of the punk world where the music still sounds like an austeredistillation of America's forlorn dream. It's the sound of an old jukebox spinning aRonettes 45 through a broken speaker, the kid in the garage figuring out the 1-4-5progression on guitar, the steady thump of the kick drum banging in 4/4 timethrough a dilapidated PA. LA's SadGirl sound a lot those early American punks_themiscreants that preceded the nihilists. Their songs sound more rooted in the wakeof Motor City soul, Enchantment Under The Sea prom ballads, and Pacific Northwestsurf rock than in the formula laid out by The Ramones, but there is still something intheir reverb-and-tremolo pop that feels like a reminder of America's decay. On their new 7" for Suicide Squeeze Records, SadGirl not only harnesses a goldenoldies sound with "Breakfast for 2", they touch upon its traditions as well. "It's afollow up to one of the first tracks I wrote for the project, `Breakfast Is Over'. It'smeant to be a sequel in line with rock n' roll and oldies tunes like "It's My Party" and"Judy's Turn To Cry", or "Johnny B. Goode" and "Bye Bye Johnny," saysguitarist/vocalist Misha Lindes. The flipside features a cover of the surf classic "Jackthe Ripper" by Link Wray. "I'm a big fan," says Lindes, "but I'm also a huge fan of thelate Israeli neo-rockabilly / surf guitarist Charlie Megira, who passed away inNovember 2016, and Charlie has an amazing version of "Jack the Ripper," saysLindes. "So our version is really an homage to Charlie as much as it is to Link Wray."

In their thirteen years of existence, Atlanta's garage punks TheCoathangers have cranked out five full-lengths and over a dozensingles, splits, and EPs. And while every Coathangers record hascaptured their buoyant turbulence and jagged euphoria, there'salways some degree of magic that gets lost when bands go intothe studio. Whatever the source of that magic, The Coathangershave always wrangled a replication of that sweaty and sticky livefeeling, but the time had come to properly document it. LIVEcaptures the playful fervor of The Coathangers at their finest.Says guitarist/vocalist Julia Kugel, "it's like our anthology. ourentire career in 38 minutes," from the slow-burn pop of"Captain's Dead" off last year's Parasite EP to the rabblerousingrocker "Tonya Harding" off their self-titled debut. "Gettin' Madand Pumpin' Iron" sounds more unhinged here than when it firstappeared on Scramble in 2009. Favorites like "Adderall" soundincreasingly ragged and desperate as drummer Stephanie Lukebelts out the lyrics on an adrenaline rush. Recent songs likebassist Meredith Franco's Nosebleed Weekend highlight "BurnMe" feel injected with an urgency that pushes the post-punknumber into an unruly anthem. The magic of The Coathangerslives in LIVE.

Parasite kicks off with the title track, a rowdy throwback to a younger, angrierincarnation of the band. Crafted in the wake of the election and during a tumultuousperiod in the band members' private lives, "Parasite" is pure catharsis. "During themaking of our last album, I didn't want to scream anymore, I just wanted to sing andfocus on melody. When we came to this recording, I just wanted to scream andcurse," says guitarist/vocalist Julia Kugel. If the EP is meant as a journey through thevarious stages of the band's career, it certainly storms out of the gate with the samekind of piss-and-vinegar of their eponymous debut. And while "Wipe Out" is anotherrowdy venture, with bassist Meredith Franco taking over the lead vocal duties over asteady barrage of pointed power-chords, it also showcases the rousing choruses thatelevated the trio from underground heroines to an internationally renowned garageact. Despite the adverse times, The Coathangers' mastery of pop cannot be containedforever, as is evident in the EP's single "Captain's Dead", with its sultry verses, triumphant chorus, and a bombastic freak-out of noisy guitar. The journey throughThe Coathangers' musical evolution leads to a revamped version of "Down Down" off2016's Nosebleed Weekend LP and the smoky twang of "Drifter", in whichdrummer/vocalist Stephanie Luke demonstrates her knack for solid Dusty Springfieldstyleballads.

Continuing her journey into uncharted waters, Julianna Barwick's remix of This Will Destroy You's serene composition The Puritan is an exercise in both refinement and intensification.Taken from TWDY's viscerally cinematic full-length studio LP Another Language (out now on Suicide Squeeze), the Brooklyn-based songstress elicits an invisible structure from the track's warbling textures and oceanic vastness, distilling and reconstituting the band's reflective soundscape into a rarefied elemental form. The resulting single is pristine and subtle; a fully immersive pairing of melodic piano with layers of decaying tape textures, anchored and paradoxically tethered to submersed bassline programming and distant, hyperborean 4/4 kick drum.By once again shifting shapes and adding emphasis with the beats she does and doesn't drop, Barwick is able to forge a totally new path for both herself and instrumental-stalwarts This Will Destroy You.A feat not easily accomplished on either count. Like so much of Barwick's work, The Puritan remix sounds as if it is both sinking, and, floating. The Puritan 7" is limited to 1000 copies on brown and black splatter color vinyl and includes a download card.

Punk rock exploded on the international scene just as Spain was awakening from theend of Franco's 35-year regime. And while new freedoms for an old country meant ablossoming of art and culture, the combination of geographical obstacles, a strugglingeconomy, and prejudices towards the countries of the Iberian Peninsula meant that theSpanish underground music scene operated with added urgency, it also operated inrelative isolation. But as anyone that's dug into Spanish punk could tell you, the scenehas an unparalleled vibrancy. Suicide Squeeze Records is proud to spread the word onthis exciting community by way of a split 7" by two of Madrid's most ecstaticcontemporary garage rock bands-the fiery quartet Hinds and the psych-tinged scorchersLos Nastys. In a nod to Madrid's close-knit underground circuit, the longstandingmusical tradition of covers, and the band's mutual admiration, the split 7" features thetwo bands tackling each others' songs. Side A finds Hinds covering Los Nastys' pop gem"Holograma" while the flipside finds Los Nastys' doing a rave-up of Hinds' "CastigadasEn El Granero." The record is both an unabashed party and an exciting document of anoft-overlooked scene. The first pressing consists of 1000 copies on translucent bloodred vinyl and includes a download card.
