Dark Buddha Rising unveil their seventh album, Mathreyata on Friday the 13th of November 2020 via Svart Records. Mathreyata album artwork, and teaser trailer for first single “Sunyaga” revealed. Video by Dehn Sora. Finnish “dark underlords of psychedelic drone” Dark Buddha Rising return with their heaviest and darkest record yet. V. Ajomo from Dark Buddha Rising states “Mathreyata follows the visions that were received from Inversum’s implosion and is the accession of what we invoked with the II EP. Before completing the great circle, all cycles must be dissolved. In the end we are standing at the edge of the abyss with all our previous work as weights, impatient to dive in. We recorded the basis of the album just before the Waste of Space Orchestra project began and mostly because of that, it took a few years to get it finished. Finally the material that we have performed live for several years can be experienced as a recorded album.” Dark Buddha Rising’s abyssic and meditative sonic-void has been opening up over the last 10 years to swallow more and more devotees in their wake. Since their inception in 2007, with their first four albums being highly-coveted, sold-out private pressings, to subsequent Svart Records reissues, to their burgeoning fifth album Dakhmandal, Dark Buddha Rising have been shining like a black diamond for those that go mining for the real thing. Embraced into Neurosis’ Neurot Records fraternity, with 2015’s critically acclaimed sixth album Inversum, Tampere-based psychonauts, Dark Buddha Rising have captivated the collective consciousness of the heavy underground and achieved cult-legend status. 2019’s climactic and highly praised Waste Of Space Orchestra collaboration with local kindred spirits Oranssi Pazuzu at Roadburn Festival, put Dark Buddha Rising’s Wastement home studio: “the asylum of eternal feedback,” firmly on the International music world map and into the hearts of the pitch-black psych-rock underworld. Gathering a throng of newly devoted adherents who worship at the altar of their churning vortex, Dark Buddha Rising’s live shows are a transformative experience that are religiously revered by audiences across Europe, with Invisible Oranges calling their performance “brain melting.” Metal Hammer describe Dark Buddha Rising’s music as “a shamanic voice chanting before a tumultuous void, soon all encompassed by a yawning riff chasm, contorted by keys, chants, rants and abyssal atmospherics,” and to put words into what Dark Buddha Rising does to the listening audience is to describe the band surrendering fully to the intuition and primal instincts as altered states of mind. Prepare your mind and body for an initiation into the dark arts of Mathreyata on Friday the 13th of November 2020. Dark Buddha Rising have channeled a work for dark spirits and those who seek to travel beyond the unknown.

Release:1974 / EU – Reissue
Genre:Rock / Indie
Limited repress of 500 copies on red vinyl. Triple fold jacket with booklet. Finland´s Wigwam definitely belongs to the honorable circle of the pioneers of early progressive rock. Considered by many as Wigwam’s most ambitious work, Being was originally released in 1974. The album was partially remixed and remastered in 2001, and this latter version is considered superior by the group’s mastermind behind the album concept, Jukka Gustavson. When Svart began planning the Being reissue, we were faced with the problem of whether to base the vinyl on the original version or the 2001 version, both somewhat different from each other. Eventually we decided to expand the album to a double vinyl, with the 1st LP being as close to the 1974 version as possible, and the 2nd LP presenting the 2001 edition on vinyl for the first time. The original vinyl release featured two booklets, one in English and the other in Finnish. Our version has the contents of both + unreleased photos + a new interview with Jukka Gustavson in one massive booklet.

Rippikoulu’s Musta seremonia is both an international cult item and an integral part of the history of Svart Records as well – a reissue of the original 1993 tape was one of the earliest Svart releases back in 2010. Back then, this album was considered as one of the best kept secrets in the Finnish underground metal scene. Four years and one quickly sold out reissue later Rippikoulu’s greatness is no longer a secret, and we are happy to bring Musta seremonia back on the market. Rippikoulu began their musical endeavours back in the late eighties, and like so many of their contemporaries, evolved from primitive punk noise to death metal. However, while many bands played death metal with groovy riffing and overall headbanging attitude, Rippikoulu’s choice of style was darker. Their downtuned metal is bleak and nearly unbearably heavy in its execution, dark and soul-searching in its themes, intertwining faster bursts of chaos with slow, doomy passages. Rippikoulu released the Musta Seremonia demo album on tape in 1993 and then disappeared. They never gained much popularity in their time, but their legacy has steadily grown in time. The album has been carefully remastered from the original DAT master tape, cleaned up and amplified.

Black vinyl. Limited edition of 500 copies. Svart Mondo series presents the first official reissue of this seminal South American jazz album.
Living in New York, the Italian trumpeter, Enrico Rava, was one of the world’s leading free jazz musicians of the 1970’s avant-garde. Rava’s visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1975 brought about an album : Aga Taura Confab – El Convidado. The idea was to record the guest trumpeter with four of the very best Argentinian musicians: pianist Fernando Gelbard, bassist Adalberto Cevasco, drummer Néstor Astarita and percussionist Juan “Chango” Farías Gómez (who is better known simply as Chango Farías). This album, called El Convidado, is a re-release of that legendary LP, for all purposes lost after its original release in 1975/76. It is a restored version of the original album with until now unpublished recording session photos by photographer Gianni Mestichelli. El Convidado was originally produced by the late and legendary Nano Herrera. The set is eclectic and beautiful, with rare trumpet-piano duets, musicians that had played with many of the greats such as Lionel Hampton, Ella Fitzgerald, Herb Geller and Lalo Schifrin, Fender Rhodes pianos, African influenced rhythmic figures and a climax of free improv build-ups. It is a record which is equally dynamic as it is melodic and poignant.

Limited double vinyl edition, 500 copies on silver splatter wax. The rare French metal cult album from 1984 finally reissued and bundled together with ten tracks taken from demo tapes. With extensive liner notes by Olivier ‘Zoltar’ Badin. One of mid-80’s heavy-metal characteristics was how it didn’t bother mincing with words. Kreator had an album called Pleasure To Kill, Iron Maiden were celebrating killers and a certain number of the beast, Metallica introduction letter to the world was bluntly titled Kill’em All, Destruction was called, well, Destruction and were promising us an ‘infernal overkill’ or, worst, a ‘bestial invasion from hell’ etc. Plain, simple, direct, in one word: Metal. And in a way, you could use that one single word to describe ADX debut. From its title Exécution (that doesn’t require much translation does it?) to its striking artwork or, of course, its galloping music, it turned overnight the rest of the other wise vibrant French heavy metal scene into old farts stuck in the past.

On “Sweven”, Morbus Chron carved out their very own territory of unorthodox death metal, far beyond their raw and simple initial style, adding many uncanny acoustic parts to create a nightmare world of utter horror. Together with producer Fred Estby (ex- Dismember), the band found a warm, yet haunting sound to go with their vision. The resulting soundscapes spread out like a wasteland of death and terror, sending chills down the hardest of spines. Guitar and drum patterns flow in various directions, building cathedrals of darkness in which tormented vocals echo in agony.

The EP ‘A Saunter through the Shroud’, was a revelation upon its release in July 2012, displaying tremendous progression from previous efforts. Instead of playing it safe, sticking to traditional death metal patterns, Morbus Chron had started to transcend the genre to incorporate elements of progressive rock as well as black metal. With patterns oozing of Voivod, Atheist and Darkthrone, as well as Death and Autopsy, Morbus Chron was on their way to something majestic. Possessing unrelenting integrity, the band shunned all trends to go further into the unknown with “Sweven”. Smell the coffin with these two pioneering recordings, available in one lush package for the first time! Morbus Chron’s idiosyncratic legacy has never sounded or looked finer.

Genre:Rock / Indie
Blackened Blues with Doom and Punk influences, Black Totem’s Deathrock is overflowing with superstition, vice and horror. Up to no good since 2008, Black Totem are notorious road-dogs of the Finnish underground, cutting their teeth and scraping their raw knuckles in a slew of live shows through the years. The band has shown promise since the early days releasing two EP’s and a self-titled debut album, which won an award for Best Rock Album at the Turku Music Awards in 2016. With their new album “Shapeshifting,” Black Totem are downright lycanthropic, breaking out of their enigmatic origins and taking on a much more unadulterated form. Their catchy, raucous Blues songs, with wild, untamed backing vocals and horror-soundtrack keys, give a distinctly Finnish lizard-disco hysteria to their fortified sound, coming across like a blood-bath in a moonshine distillery. Howling at the moon, with lungs of bile, Danzig/Misfits/Samhain influences are fleshed out with the Doom-laden riff-war of Celtic Frost, Venom and Darkthrone. Together with the catchier urban song-craft of the Black Keys, this cauldron of Black Totem’s magic formula makes “Shapeshifting” a familiar, yet heavily enjoyable natural genre-clash of their own.

Svart Records is proud to present The Limit. Punk & Doom originators go straight to the soul of heavy rock on their new album Caveman Logic to be released via Svart Records on the 9th of April 2021.

More than a super-group, The Limit goes over the edge, to deliver real-deal, soulful Rock and Roll. Consisting of members of legendary Punk instigators The Stooges, the founders of Doom Rock Pentagram, legendary NYC Punk originators Testors and infamous Portugese metal band Dawnrider, The Limit break out from the foundations of heavy rock and defy all expectations, to show a new generation what doom and punk really means. On the new album Caveman Logic, Bobby Liebling, singer and main-man of Pentagram, one of the originators of early Doom Rock and an inspiration for generations of Heavy Rock fans, on vocals, gives the performance of his career, singing like his life depended on it. Sonny Vincent, enigmatic legend of the early NYC Max’s Kansas City, Cbgb Punk scene with his band Testors, having been on the road and recording with members of The Velvet Underground, lays down the guitar driven songs, his writing bearing all the hallmarks of ground-breaking Rock history in it’s filthy DNA. Phenomenal bass playing from Jimmy Recca, ex- The Stooges, and Ron Asheton’s New Order, gives The Limit the intense and world-class, speaker-destroying bottom end. Joined by Hugo Conim on Guitar and João Pedro Ventura on Drums from Portuguese band Dawnrider, The Limit fuses star-dust pedigree with an organic incendiary chemistry that’s instantly raw and real. A dream come true to those that know their Doom/Punk history, The Limit brings the past right up to date on Caveman Logic, with an essential, burning passion at the heart of their songs. Seldom has a collaboration of well known stars in music sounded so vigorous and frenzied as The Limit’s caveman-like roar. The Limit is an astoundingly fresh and hot-blooded shot to the veins that Heavy Rock needs in this day and age. Conjured forth by stone-age pioneers, Caveman Logic goes to the heart of impassioned Heavy Rock and Punk, to deliver the basic and vital elements often missing in so much of today’s music. If you want primitive and straight to the soul primal rock, fresh from the grave and exhumed for a new unwitting future, look no further than Caveman Logic. This is it. This is as far as it goes. The Limit!

Genre:Rock / Indie
Black vinyl, limited to 500 copies, heavy tip-on jacket. Pekka Laine is leading a double life. There is his daytime persona, a longstanding journalist and maker of award-winning documentary series for radio and television. Then there is the other side to him that comes out at night: the guitar player and DIY-composer. As a driving force of The Hypnomen, a band with a cult following, Laine has explored the world of instrumental music since the 1990s. In his intrepid journeys from primitive noise art to the spheres of soulful psychedelia, he has now reached one important milestone. As a result of a series of unpredictable twists and turns, Pekka Laine’s first solo album was born. The making of the album has been a highly personal journey. It is a declaration of his undying love of the enchanted instrument that is the electric guitar and the cosmic echoes that tie together the primal 1960s space sounds, psychedelia, dub music and weird film soundtracks to form one futuristic continuum. What started as an innocent and unexpected email in last March has turned into a process mentored by Esa Pulliainen, the fearless leader of the legendary band Agents. From his seat behind the mixing console, the guitar legend captured the sound waves and created the right mood. Multi-instrumentalist and producer Toni Liimatta, a serious alchemist in the world of instrumental music, added his invaluable expertise and experience. The spirit during the sessions where Laine’s compositions were transformed from dreamy ideas into reality was free and almost childlike in zeal. No holds were barred and nothing could stop the stream of influences, associations and sounds ricocheting off the studio walls. Joe Meek, electronic space sounds, Spaghetti Westerns, experimental tape music, London, California, Moscow, Jane Birkin, library music, Björn Olsson, Link Wray, early hip hop, the Wrecking Crew, folk, Roy Anderson’s films – there was no end in sight when the party started raving about all things inspiring. The music, however, is authentic. It came straight from the composer’s own head and heart.

For those progressive music fans lucky enough to know, the 1972/73 album debut from Finnish music legend Pekka Pohjola – Pihkasilmä kaarnakorva – remains a masterpiece of 20th Century music history.

At the time of the album’s recording, Pekka Pohjola was heralded for his bass playing in Wigwam – Finland’s most influential rock band that also included British-born singer-songwriter legend Jim Pembroke, late great drumming ace Ronnie Österberg and keyboard prodigy Jukka Gustavson. As the bass player in Wigwam and a most excellent keyboard player in his own right, Pohjola was refining his compositional might back in 1972.

At just over 33 minutes, Pihkasilmä kaarnakorva features five prodigious, complex works of instrumental rock wonder, abundant with intricate melodies and graceful musicianship. The album spotlights some of Finland’s best instrumentalists from the era – Jukka Gustavson (keyboards), the late, great Pekka Pöyry (soprano sax, flute), Risto Pensola (clarinet) and Reino Laine (drums). Pohjola’s incredible bass playing proves why the late, great Frank Zappa wanted Pekka to come to the U.S. and tour with his band, although till this day, the absolute focal point of the album is the great action-packed music. Listening again, now 48 years after it was recorded at Finnvox studios in Helsinki, Pihkasilmä kaarnakorva serves as an illuminating prologue to a musician who, by the mid ‘70s was ready to change the way a lot people would be listening to music in the advancing years.

Gatefold jacket, black vinyl. Limited re-edition of 500 copies. The label in England most associated with the 1970’s progressive rock sound was Virgin Records, headed up by then aspiring entertainment mogul Richard Branson. Trendsetting ‘70s albums from Mike Oldfield, Robert Wyatt, Gong, Hatfield & The North, Tangerine Dream and more solidified Virgin’s reputation as 20th Century music pacesetters. In 1975, Virgin pulled one of their coolest moves to date, securing U.K. releases for two Finnish progressive music classics – Nuclear Nightclub from Wigwam and B The Magpie from Pekka Pohjola. The ace up Branson’s sleeve during Virgin’s early years was guitarist Mike Oldfield – the early folk-rocker turned symphonic- rock icon who took the music world by storm with Tubular Bells. That album’s ominous guitar figure, featured in The Exorcist soundtrack, gave Mike tons of recognition, yet in the aftermath of major success there was a less than ecstatic reception for his next album, Hergest Ridge. Virgin, keenly aware of Oldfield’s musical progression, primed the guitar wiz for his next big move by making him co-producer of a new Virgin Records release from Finnish symphonic rock great Pekka Pohjola. Pohjola’s follow up album to B The Magpie, (a/k/a Harakka Bialoipokku), Mathematician’s Air Display was easily among the finest instrumental albums to date from the original Virgin Records label. Mathematician’s Air Display clocks in at just under 35 minutes, yet within it’s grooves are so many superbly crafted musical ideas. Supplying bass, grand piano and synthesizers, Pekka wrote and arranged some wondrous melodies for the album and Mike Oldfield’s guitar playing was some of his best of the ‘70s. Also partaking in this once in a lifetime Pohjola & Oldfield collaboration was Gong drummer Pierre Moerlen and long time Pohjola cohorts from Made In Sweden – Georg Wadenius (guitar) and Wlodek Gulkowski (synths). Additional drumming is supplied by the great Vesa Aaltonen and topping off the proceedings are ethereal backing vocals from Mike’s sister, Sally Oldfield. The dynamic guitar-driven title track, ”Mathematician’s Air Display”, remains a definite highlight as does the soaring 16 minute symphonic rock suite entitled ”The Consequences Of Head Bending”. Reflecting back 45 years after it’s initial release, Mathematician’s Air Display still sounds amazing and remains a masterpiece from the golden age of ‘70s progressive rock.

The ultimate edition on vinyl! Housed in a heavy-duty slipcase, the package features a replica of Into Darkness LP with original cover layout, the demo Eternal Frost making its vinyl debut plus a thick magazine with Winter memorabilia. This version is on black vinyl and limited to 500 copies. Perpetually out of print, much sought after and universally worshipped amongst those in the know, Winter’s Into Darkness was a game-changing classic. Formed in New York circa 1988, Winter played slow, deep and hard nuclear doom with a crust punk rawness, that came across like Hellhammer jamming with Amebix. Their penchant for mammoth sized and funeral-paced, wasteland droning has become a touchstone reference for bands across the whole spectrum of underground metal. Their pre-internet infamy led to Winter demos being tape- traded in hallowed adoration by fans and bands alike, gaining notable fans such as Fenriz from Darkthrone. Deserving of their special place in the pantheon of one-off classic albums, the Swans-like noise and down-tuned Earth-like riffs of Into Darkness went on to spawn countless doom and sludge bands, being an influence for an entire doomed generation. The Winter come-back show at Roadburn Festival in 2011 was massively anticipated and held a captivated audience. Packing out one of The Netherlands largest stages, that particular Winter show, after many years in obscurity is a rare event that is still highly regarded today. The band is a rare jewel amongst collectors, and audiences alike. Svart Records is proud to re-release Into Darkness once more, having only been reissued once in a limited edition during this millennium, putting the album back in print for a new generation of listeners. This reprint notably also features the legendary demo which was only reissued on a mini-cd in 1995, now finally on vinyl.

“With Polysomn we emphasize psychedelic chaos. Each song creates their own reality, filled with surreal visions and ethereal soundscapes. “an Bat None” introduces the heavier side of the album. Its purpose is to be a wall of sonic bliss.” Formed in 2009 by four inner-space travellers from western Finland, Kairon; Irse! is a rare bird, near-impossible to classify. The Wire describes their music as a “viperous cocktail of space rock, Greg Lake-era King Crimson and free jazz”, and ever since their debut album, Ujubasajuba set Bandcamp buzzing in 2014, their records have been hidden classics of modern psych-rock for those in the know. It was their sophomore release, Ruination, in 2017 that established Kairon; Irse!’s place in the canon of Finnish genre-bending freakout fusion, bringing them widespread critical acclaim and a multitude of wild-eyed devotees to their astral-magic live-shows. Prog Magazine referred to their “propulsive storm of psych rock hiss’n’fizz”, and Kairon; Irse!’s carefully crafted song structures came to the fore on Ruination, flexing a newly-forged pop sensibility for reshaping past influences into a futuristic tour de force of consciousness expansion. The Guardian found their music “as invigorating as a dip in a Finnish lake”, with “a sense of the visionary and sublime”, featuring Kairon; Irse! as New Band Of The Week . Following a European tour in 2017, Kairon; Irse! set sails for a performance at Roadburn Festival 2018, securing their name in the heart of the underground as rising stars of psychedelic post-rock. As the new decade unfolds, Kairon; Irse! prepare to pour down their multicoloured dreams thru your cerebral cortex on their highly anticipated new 3rd album,Polysomn. A treasure-trove of glitching, elated sounds, that takes psychedelia into a new dimension, Polysomn brings to mind the melodic lightning of bands like Dungen, the chainsawing alternative guitar fuzz of My Bloody Valentine, the sparkle and dreamscape of Slowdive, and the technological envelope-pushing of Radiohead’s outsider works.

Stunning quality, rare live performance recordings of krautrock pioneers Guru Guru, from one of their earliest ever live concerts on Sunday October the 25th 1970. Three long slabs of prime classic psychedelic prog, two from the ‘UFO’ album and one off ‘Hinten’, show the band at their apex, defining a sound that had never been heard before. Sourced from tapes recorded directly from the sound desk at the show, the recording quality is phenomenal for something of this vintage era. The original line-up of Mani Neumeier – drums & vocals, Ax Genrich – guitar and Uli Trepte – bass & vocals, are present and on full power.
Guru Guru stood for space, psychedelic experience and electric magic. It stood for energy, imagination and freedom. Turn on, tune in, take off!

Limited Edition of 200. "This is a dialogue between man and machine," say K-X-P, continuing the lineage set out by Kraftwerk all those years ago. Yet a nostalgic pursuit of such past explorations this is not, IV is an album that is emblematic of K-X-P's ever-ceasing desire to move forward and explore new worlds, hurtling forward into new realms of minimal techno, icy synths and brooding atmospheres. K-X-P which revolves around two main collaborators - Timo Kaukolampi and Tomi Leppänen - have now been playing together for over a decade, resulting in one of Finland's most consistent yet ever-evolving alternative artists. As with most K-X-P records, there's a strong thematic approach and concept at its core. For anyone that has seen the band will know, their live shows are a potent and unforgettable force. So this record was made from the energy and approach of one.

On “Skeleton Elevator”, a hair-tingling, spine-popping, ribcage-rattling slab of twisted tundra boogie, Finland’s Cosmo Jones Beat Machine have their bony fingers on the global pulse of underground rock’n’roll, invoking the spirits of Beefheart, the Fall and Funkadelic.

Cosmo Jones Beat Machine have a history that spans over two decades and starts in the woods and the wild in eastern Finland. Over the years the band have lived through five album releases, countless lineup changes and furious live appearances around Scandinavia and Europe that have brought the band a minor cult following. Skeleton Elevator is their sixth album altogether and the first in six years.

The six years spent in cultivating the album now at hand have further tempered the band’s trademark sound, which is comprised of primitive but captivating rhythms and a terrifying racket. The vocalist Pharaoh Pirttikangas’ trademark raspy delivery, which has deepened over the years, weaves stories dug up from the Mississippi Delta in the pale moonlight and distilled through an eastern Finnish swamp. The new album’s Beefheartian clatter is at times spiced with influences from unexpected directions such as disco (Minimal Brain Dysfunction Generation) and Funkadelic-style space funk (Transformed). The band recorded the bulk of the album during a 24-hour session without sleep, which only adds to the record’s pleasantly unpolished, frantic edge.

Hexvessel and Svart Records celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Hexvessel’s debut album Dawnbearer with a set of reissues, including CD, double vinyl plus an exclusive vinyl box set with a bonus LP containing demos and early versions of tracks on the album. “Dawnbearer is a very important album for us, being our first album but also the first original album release for Svart Records. It’s also a very special record for our fans, and one that’s particularly close to my heart, in a world of its own when compared to the other records we have made. Considering that it’s been out of print now for some time, I’m delighted to be able to oversee a reissue of this album, together with original demos and out-takes, and liner notes showing the making of this album which carries the initial DNA of Hexvessel’s musical and spiritual journey”, says band leader Mat McNerney, “We haven’t touched a thing on the original layout, but added some bonus material for the limited edition, should you wish to own a luxury edition of this, our now classic debut.” Hexvessel band was founded by English singer/songwriter Mat McNerney (Beastmilk, Grave Pleasures, Carpenter Brut etc) after he moved to Finland in 2009. Their style of music has been referred to as “forest folk” or as Noisey/Vice puts it: “Weaving English folk, lilting Americana, and mushroom-induced psychedelia”. Their debut album ‘Dawnbearer’ was released worldwide in 2011 on Svart Records and is considered to be an influential classic record of the modern Occult Rock revival. Highly popular with Hexvessel fans and unique in their catalogue, featuring guitars by Andrew McIvor (Code), violin work of Daniel Pioro (who works on Paul Thomas Anderson’s soundtracks with Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead), the early production work of Jaime Gomez Arellano (Ghost, Paradise Lost), and guest vocals from Carl Michael Eide (Virus, Ved Buens Ende, Aura Noir).

The Savonian occult rock behemoth Jess and The Ancient Ones have emerged with a new album! Their brand of heavy guitar and organ-led swagger has progressed from the twin guitar metal blast of yesteryear to Jess and The Ancient Ones’ very own take on soulful late sixties garage psychedelia. Titled Vertigo, the new record is set for release on Svart Records on May 21st this year with a foreboding sound of lysergic doom.

What began on the previous record, ‘The Horse & Other Weird Tales’ is taken further and deeper, towards a conclusion on Vertigo. Songwriter and guitarist Thomas Corpse comments, “To me this album sounds like a dark horse – a brother to the previous album. There’s a strange ominous feeling that hovers upon the entire album, maybe it’s the feeling of nostalgia that’s arising from the lyrics.”

Wrapped in a crude tornado-adorned old school sleeve, the album’s eight tracks bubble in a boiling cauldron of vintage pop culture influence and occult-tinged paranoia. Ranging from the softly fiery opening track ‘Burning of The Velvet Fires’ to the almost heavy metal -ish nihilistic banger ‘Born To Kill’, Vertigo is a spiraling journey of heavy Finnish psych rock at its finest.

Smiles are contagious, so in these troubled times Throat urge you to smile less Throat’s third album, ”Smile Less” carries a significantly darker tone compared to the band’s previous output albeit the light at the end of the tunnel has always been dim. While the foundation of Throat’s sound remains in 90s noise rock, ”Smile Less” pushes its way through all boundaries, starting off with cold post-punk vibes and ending in a wall of harsh noise. The space between those moments is stuffed with noisy rock music offering the listener the odd chance for groovy booty shake before throwing a curve ball with some industrial sound experiments. The first impression may not be as jarring as on their earlier recordings, but ”Smile Less” is still a demanding listen as Throat have never been poster boys for entertainment value. Just like ”Bareback” (2018), the band’s second album and first one for Svart Records, ”Smile Less” was recorded at Tonehaven Recording Studio with Tom Brooke, mixed by Andrew Schneider (Unsane, Cult of Luna, Cave In) and mastered by Carl Saff (Big Business, KEN Mode, Young Widows). Artwork was designed by Canadian artist Paul Van Trigt. Since ”Bareback”, Throat has toured the U.S., played a handful of shows in Finland, celebrated their 10 year anniversary with a double-CD compilation, recruited a new drummer in their ranks and also released an industrial/noise remix version of ”Bareback”.

Back in print! Gatefold LP, black vinyl.

Gatefold sleeve, limited lime colored vinyl. La Morte Viene Dallo Spazio (Death Comes From Space)’s name is taken from a late 50s Italian sci-fi b-movie, and this ensemble’s cinematic odyssey of sound is like Argento, Fulci and Bava taking acid with Magma and Jodorowsky. A solid departure from anything you will be listening to right now, La Morte Viene Dallo Spazio’s free-form journeys leave you in unknown astral territory and bake your brain. Composed of an open gathering of players, the Italian quintet combines flavours of Middle Eastern scales, droning theremin and guitars. Their flute-player’s frantic, progressive and abstract elements tear open the cosmic gates like Jethro Tull in a Giallo nightmare. The first album, ‘Sky Over Giza’, released in 2018, was a synth laden soundscape full of ancient mysticism and alien apparitions which gained them a rabid following in their home country of Italy and beyond. La Morte Viene Dallo Spazio’s second album on Svart Records; ‘Trivial Visions’, is a wholly unique experience. An enthralling listen in a confluence of sound and ritual atmospheres that craft a both vibrant and hypnotic effect with nods to black metal and extreme ends of the sound spectrum. This vivid, dreamy and cosmic material will transfer the listener to vast sonic dimensions where one could easily lose the way back to reality. Is this Jazz, Stoner-Rock, Psych-Rock or Progressive Rock? This is La Morte Dallo Spazio and they’re in a universe of their own. Start receiving your deathly visions when the new album drops via Svart Records on the 26th of March 2021.

Tasavallan Presidentti were, together with Wigwam, the pioneers of the Finnish progressive rock movement. Svart Records have an ongoing archive project with the band, the first fruit of which was the Live in Lambertland record in 2019, now sold out. Next in the series is the live compilation Changing Times and Movements, to be released in April 2021. Whereas Live in Lambertland was a full live set with the band’s latter day vocalist Eero Raittinen, the forthcoming double album is a documentary of Tasavallan Presidentti’s early years with the English-born vocalist Frank Robson at the helm. The record consists of three live recordings from 1970 and 1971. The earliest shows date from the first ever Ruisrock festival in Turku, Finland 1970 and the Skeppsholmen Festival in Stockholm, Sweden the same summer. The album finishes with a live appearance at the Poppop Festival in Lappeenranta, Finland in 1971. These previously unheard archival finds present a showcase of the formidable presence that Tasavallan Presidentti had on stage in the early days in their career. Changing Times and Movements includes, in addition to live renditions of material from the band’s first two studio albums, six tracks the band never recorded. Whirlwind Nightmare, The Old Woman and Gigolo were eventually recorded by the Finnish rock singer Kirka in the Finnish language, but this is the first time they’re presented as Tasavallan Presidentti originals, in English. Going Back was a Frank Robson song which was abandoned when Robson left the band. Impressions of India ended up on Jukka Tolonen’s first solo album, and Ain’t Ya Coming Home is a Blodwyn Pig cover which the band often played live around the time.

Limited repress of 500 copies on blue vinyl.

Dear Friend, This record that you are holding in your hand is a proper product of the Spirit. In 1967 Great Spirits dropped by my house for coffee and ordered: “You must set Everybody’s Character’s into music”. I immediately left, with a notebook in hand, to interview all people in the world, but the Spirits bolted my door shut so that I could not exit and announced with ghastly laughter: “We meant the Horoscope! You are to humbly attempt to interpret all 12 signs as well as you can”. This I did… Matti “Rag” Paananen” Horoscope is an Occult Jazz masterpiece from 1973, never before reissued on vinyl. In 1967, Matti “Rag” Paananen decided to compose his own vision of the Western astrological signs. Each one has its own composition on the 12-song theme album that was originally released in 1973. For the compositions he studied every astrological sign and made his own interpretation of how it would sound as music. Although the compositions were already made in 1967, they weren’t recorded until late 1972. The idea to make the record came from Seppo “Paroni” Paakkunainen who produced Horoscope with Ilpo “Ilja” Saastamoinen. Both of them also play on the album and contributed an intro and outro for the album (Space In, Space Out). All the songs were composed according to different characteristics of the signs. The subject is there in plain sight and Paananen pictures how it would sound as music. This approach gives the songs a very visual and yet individual nature, but at the same time the compositions and the arrangements are aesthetically coherent. This is what makes Horoscope so special and an album you need to sit down for. The album is very much in line with what was done in the 1970s Finnish music scene with its jazz and prog rock touches, but there really is no album like this. It sounds like a soundtrack to a bizarre, imaginary silent film from the 1970s in which different animals meet in a hazy jazz bar.

Long out of print and difficult to obtain on any format, with the reissues even becoming sought-after gems, Svart have now repressed this definitive edition of Warning’s demos on vinyl. This fully authorised edition includes a selection of vintage photos, all lyrics plus liner notes by Patrick Walker and Stu Springthorpe, as well as a foreword by Peter Vicar.

Seldom a dry eye in the house, when they play these songs live, there is an authenticity and genuine melancholy to this record which has rarely, if ever, been equaled. Patrick Walker from Warning says: “I’m relieved and happy to finally see the first official vinyl re-release of Watching from a Distance. Eternal Tears of Sorrow’s long career kicked off with the more thrash metalish debut album in 1997, but it was on the 1998 follow-up Vilda Mánnu (“Wild Moon” in the Sami language of indigenous Lapplandish people) that the band really carved their own niche amid the crowded metal scene. Hailing from Finnish Lappland, Etos are best known for well-crafted, fierce but melancholic melodic death metal with symphonic overtones, of which this album, their Spinefarm Records debut, is a prime example.

Svart Mondo presents an official reissue limited to 500. Highly sought-after gem of Argentinian prog/psych, Cuero’s second album Crecimiento (1974) is a turning point for the band. Latin jazz-rock style in the vein of Carlos Santana, with abundant instrumental themes of Afro roots, mixed with diverse percussion styles and arrangements, gives you an idea of the outlandish territory the band traverses. A Prog and Jazz Fusion oddity of the finest calibre, reminiscent of records like Zappa’s Waka/Wazoo with some free jazz touches and the occasional jazz flute thrown in for good measure. Heavy bass grooves (“Viéndome a trasluz” “Pisando el suelo”), with a few brief percussion interludes (“Forrado de cueros”) to mix it up a bit, makes Crecimiento an enthralling listen. Resurrected by Svart with booklet and liner notes, so that a future generation can appreciate this piece of Argentinian music history without paying the high prices that the rare original vinyl now fetches.

Svart Mondo presents a limited edition of 500 copies on black vinyl. Highly influential debut album of raunchy and energetic psychedelic early garage punk by Finnish legend Virtanen, originally released on the infamous Love Records label in 1974 and now presented as a first ever vinyl reissue. With a reputation of having wild stage shows, Virtanen’s Hal-00 was touted as the first Finnish punk rock album not only for the raw music but also for the band’s scruffy, outsider image. If Virtanen’s music needs classification, it is a brand of early garage rock, with proto-punk influences, inspired by Bowie, The Who, T-Rex and The Kinks. Ahead of their time in sound and style, Virtanen’s showmanship was unseen for a rock group at the time in Finland, and Hal-00 is nothing short of a timeless classic. Revitalised for a new era, with photo and lyric booklet with extensive liner notes.

No one album could ever capture the claustrophobia-to-catharsis of an Eyehategod show, but this compilation of live tracks and demos comes as close as it gets. Giving you an idea of Eyehategod’s uncompromising, single minded purity of expression and exertion of raw nerve, “10 Year Of Abuse” is a monumental document all the way from the demo era to their later, legendary relentless live tour set. Many other bands have tried unsuccessfully to emulate Eyehategod and have never quite captured their dynamic. Formed in 1988 in New Orleans they have become one of the most well known bands to emerge from the Nola metal scene. Eyehategod note bands like Melvins, The Obsessed, Discharge, Black Flag, Black Sabbath and Saint Vitus as major influences, but are often mentioned in the same breath as any of these legendary bands. Drawing comparisons to Grindcore, Crust Punk and Sludge Metal, their heavy bluesy, detuned rock and roll has been a lynchpin for the misanthropic and disenfranchised. Eyehategod has released five studio albums to date with a sixth in the works and have toured all over the world in a career spanning over thirty years. Though the band has never released a live album, we are left with “10 Years” as the only official witnessing document to decades of decimating live sonic abuse. Released on May 29, 2001, “10 Years” spans seven live tracks from their European tour in 2000, a live radio show from August 1994 and four songs from an early 1990 demo. The result is a feedback-laced window into that wonderful, brutal Eyehategod “sound”, that addictive, lower-than-low note that nestles somewhere in the pit of your burning, alcohol-soaked, nauseated stomach. The booklet alone is a delight for anyone who worships at the altar of Eyehategod’s oppressively heavy, crushing riffs. With personal liner-notes, that set the scene and describe the unique vibe of the band’s sound and live show, including old flyers and posters from concerts and photos of the different line-ups from 1990 until today, the package is an immersive insight into one of the paramount heavy Sludge bands of our time. A vision of pain and neglect, they’ve done thousands of shows, never predictable in their tension and ultimately, release. Glory in their downtuned vision of depravity and despair, for the End Times aren’t coming, they’re here and they’ve always been here. Revel in the power of Nines, in the power that is Eyehategod. Licensed from Century Media and released in a limited edition of 600 on black vinyl, and 400 on green splatter vinyl. Expertly remastered by Jaime Gomez Arellano (Paradise Lost, Cathedral, Ghost).

Svart Records is proud to present the original soundtrack to the supernatural thriller series Requiem! Debuted by BBC One in the UK and Netflix globally, psychological horror series Requiem became an instant hit, not least because of it’s haunting, spine-tingling score. Conjured by award-winning composers Dominik Scherrer (The Missing, Ripper Street & Marple), and Natasha Khan of Bat For Lashes, Requiem is an eerie landscape of sharp, scraping cello, soothing harps and tense string sections. From the urban uncanny to folk horror, there is a distinct atmosphere in the fresh collaborative dynamic between the British-Swiss decorated grandmaster of unique television series soundtracks Scherrer, and the rising enigma of alt-pop, twice Mercury Music Prize-nominated singer/songwriter Khan. Of their alchemical and otherworldly creative chemistry, composer Dominik Scherrer recalls: “Natasha Khan and I spent some weeks in my studio in Brick Lane, coming up with themes and recording outlandish vocals and terrifying sounds. There is a cheeky element to the show, as well as a genuinely scary one. Together with a pastoral spookiness of the cello and strings themes started to give Requiem its own unique atmosphere. We experimented with deviant playing techniques and unconventional recording approaches, to complete a moody air of retro horror and pastoral spook.” Available for the first time on CD and LP, this highly celebrated “spooksome” score harkens back to the 1970s lo-fi soundtracks from BBC’s Radiophonic Workshop or 1970s horror soundtracks. Winning an Ivor Novello award for the “Best TV Soundtrack” in 2019, Requiem is a one of a kind treasure, now rightfully preserved and beautifully presented on lush vinyl and CD format by Svart Records. “Requiem promises much, not least in way of sound. Nominally just another spooksome BBC tingler – old castle in Wales, birds flying into windows, locked room, pagan symbols, creepy locals – it is rendered a whole cut above by not having the heroine’s every move into peril foreshadowed by dissonant eek-eek string” (The Guardian)

First pressing of 500 copies on icy blue vinyl. Where Old World superstition meets the cold, gray reality of life in the former Soviet Bloc, there is “Romanian ice metal”. Conceived in rural Transylvania by a heavy metal enthusiast named Vladislav Bârladeanu, Persekutor follow in the great tradition of early rock-based black metal masters like Venom, Celtic Frost and Bathory, channeled through the vicious, unflinching efficiency of Ac/dc. The band’s first widely available recording was a seven-inch single entitled Power Frost, released in 2013 on now-defunct Magic Bullet Records. A pair of cassette demos followed—2014’s Arctic Cross and 2015’s Ice Wars—both released in severely limited quantities. On a visit to Los Angeles in 2015, Vlad was introduced to Lightning Swords Of Death guitarist Inverted Chris Velez, and the duo collaborated on a cover of Celtic Frost’s Procreation (Of The Wicked) for Morbid Tales! A Tribute To Celtic Frost, released later that year by Corpse Flower Records. In 2018, Vlad moved to Hollywood and recruited members of prominent underground musical entities to fulfill his purpose. Velez was retained on guitar, along with Saviours / Ides Of Gemini drummer Scott Batiste and Deth Crux / Ides Of Gemini bassist Adam Murray. The newly minted band made their American live debut in Los Angeles in September of that year, opening for Brazilian black-thrashers Power From Hell. The show ended in a stabbing and massive police presence. Two months later, Persekutor played the pre-party for Decibel magazine’s inaugural Los Angeles Metal & Beer Fest, alongside Armored Saint, Night Demon and Uada. The band’s next show was at a strip club in Hollywood, where the dancers—driven to a frenzy by the band’s animal magnetism—joined them onstage for maximum visual stimulation. In 2019, Persekutor entered Veracuda Studios in El Sereno to record their first proper full-length. The sessions were helmed by engineer extraordinaire Phil Vera, who also happens to be the guitarist for powerviolence legends Crom and Despise You—not to mention noted ale enthusiasts Trappist. The result is Permanent Winter, nine songs inspired by Carpathian survivalist tales, Transylvanian booze fighters and the ever-present threat of freezing to death. It is the uncompromising spirit of Eastern European black metal mainlined into the collapsed vein of greasy rock n’ roll. Consider yourself warned.

Enter the Temple of Wounds, unleashed from the clandestine Canadians Blight. Rising out of obscurity to share their violent, radical, and illuminating vision, Blight’s nine song new album is a 52-minute exercise in galvanizing, and relentless Black Metal. Temple of Wounds will find a home within the ashen hearts of listeners of luminaries such as Behemoth, Marduk, and Rotting Christ, while also embracing the contemporary, underground zeal of bands such as Bölzer, Cobalt, Light of the Morning Star, and Kriegsmachine.
Yet the sound that Blight shapes out of chaos and calamity is uniquely their own: grand choirs and fiery chants pepper the band’s powerful and dynamic approach to Black Metal, where claustrophobic, menacing riffs threaten to suffocate, percussive elements merge violence with technological prowess, and vocals are delivered with a cathartic intensity.
Formed in 2008 in Montreal, Blight released several highly sought-after tapes into the underground during their early years. It was only after a brief hiatus, from 2010 to 2011, that frontman Gabriel McCaughry (ex- Unquintessence, Ion Dissonance, Vatican, Anathema Publishing Ltd.) made a pact with current-members Pascal Pelletier, Cedric Deschamps, and Rob Lapalme (ex- Insect & Ontôs On) to solidify what stands as today’s manifestation of Blight.
The band were discovered by the sub-arctic worshippers of blackest vinyl at Svart Records and after a short and fruitful period of communication, the parchments were inked and a covenant was made to release Blight’s new album Temple of Wounds on the 5th of June, 2020. Blight’s lyrical themes explore deep facets of inner alchemical transmutation, which lends their music substantial literary weight. Temple of Wounds is allied with a higher intelligence, creating a state-of-the-art sound-war of Black Metal that is at once fresh and familiar, primitive, and epic in scope.
