Planet Love 2: Early Transmissions 1990-95
2LP | 2022 | EU | Original (Safe Trip)
26,99 €*
Release:2022 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Following the success of the first Planet Love compilation, Safe Trip has delved even deeper into the roots and formative years of trance music. The result is a vivid snapshot of heady, trance-inducing music released between 1990 and ’95.

Like its predecessor, Planet Love 2 does not deliver a straightforward chronological run-down of influential ‘proto-trance’ cuts and key early anthems. Instead, it casts its’ net far wider for inspiration, joining the dots between trance-inducing tracks in a disparate mixture of interconnected styles.

Before trance became rigidly defined in the late 1990s, the term was more loosely used as a descriptor, with the tag variously being attached to tracks that combined elements of techno, ambient, breakbeat, deep house, electronica, progressive house, acid, tribal and new beat. What unified these disparate musical strands was an emphasis on groove, melody, atmosphere and – more often than not – psychedelic intent.

You’ll find all this and more amongst the 12 colourful and emotive tracks from around the world that make up Planet Love 2. The hard-to-pigeonhole, early ‘90s New York rave scene is represented by the immersive ambient of Lazer Worshippers’ ‘Free Flight’, Revelation’s trippy gem ‘First Power (Domination Dub)’ and the delay-laden drums, held-note new wave chords and psychedelic electronics of ‘Time Warp’ by Moodswings.

The UK’s rarely discussed role in the development of early trance – often via tracks that touched on ambient techno and progressive house – is represented by the Obsession Project’s prototype melodic trance obscurity ‘Untitled Part 3’, the Arc’s fast-then-slow rework of The Moody Boyz ‘The Pygmy Song (Nocturnal Version)’ and ‘X O Surf’ from The Deep, a breakbeat-driven workout that defies easy categorization.

Naturally, the popularity of early trance in Europe is reflected in the track listing, too. Check the formative progressive trance of French producer Innertales’ ‘Odysee’, two tracks from Italy (T.E.W’s ‘Doubt Int’ and Alien Signal’s melodic ‘Deep Sky Delights’), and a trio of often overlooked cuts by German artists (early Svan Vath number ‘L’Esperanza’, the Jam El Mar co-produced ‘We Come in Piece (Desert Mix)’ by Dance 2 Trance, and ‘A Source’, the opening track from Tobias Beldermann’s first EP as Redeye.

Offering a deeper and more diverse definition of early trance than volume one and packed to the rafters with sought-after and overlooked gems, Planet Love 2 is a fitting follow-up to Safe Trip’s first collection of formative trance treats.

Alandazu EP
12" | 2022 | EU | Original (Livity Sound)
15,99 €*
Release:2022 / EU – Original
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Continuing the theme of community collaboration sparked by Hodge and Simo Cell’s recent 12”, Livity Sound presents the first joint works by Azu Tiwaline and Al Wootton. While they come from distinct settings (Azu in the Tunisian desert, Al in London’s urban sprawl), their music shares a similar affinity for intricate percussion and dub-informed space. The four tracks on Livity052 deal in a variety of rhythms and tempos, veering from the propulsive intensity of ‘Blue Dub’ to the sparse, skipping 2-step framework of ‘Light Transmission’. Azu and Al’s refined, detailed approach blurs the lines between electronic sound design and earthy sonics, resulting in dynamic drum tracks loaded with weighty atmospherics and unrelenting tension. Livity Sound is a label set up by Peverelist in 2011 as a vehicle for a raw and exploratory strain of UK techno, rooted in the heritage of UK dance music and sound system culture. It has since become one of the UK's foremost protagonists for cutting edge underground electronic music.

MAX Cooper announces new album Unspoken Words, released 25th March on Mesh. Today he shares lead single "Everything" and its accompanying video. "Everything" is an excitable expression of freedom and joy, an explosion of colour referencing classic synth sounds from Max Cooper’s formative years and the golden era of idealism in music and popular culture of the '80 and '90s. “I love feeling that anything is possible. It feels like I’m bursting and need to find some expression," says Cooper. "The synths seemed to carry the hope of everything I could imagine, condensed into the simple chord progression, improvised pads and layers of distortion. It was a lot of fun to work with, and spending time in that creative mindset generated lots of ideas which could be shot down later under less manic conditions.” As an audio-visual artist, Cooper often goes to the medium of video to enhance his music and the ideas and stories which inspire and inform his work. "Everything" is one of 13 short films combined into Unspoken Words and the metanarrative which will be released as a film on Blu-ray to accompany the album on 25th March. Cooper developed the visual story for ‘Everything’ with long term collaborator Nick Cobby and photographer Andrey Prokhorov, who has a huge library of imagery from around the world. About Unspoken Words “I’ve always struggled with words. "Trying to communicate anything meaningful about my internal state, in any way which seems to do it justice, has always been beyond me. "But music bypasses language. It is my means of expression, which is why I make a lot of it - I’m compelled to create.” - Max Cooper, January 2022 Unspoken Words is Max Cooper’s most revealing work to date, leading the listener through experiences of escapism and connection with personal stories of reflection, acceptance, grappling, idealism and rejection. The raw expression of Cooper’s own mental state illuminates the universal experience of being human. Unspoken Words offers common ground, a unifying space for anyone who faces internal discordance and feels the need for greater connection and greater expression. Speaking about the process of writing Unspoken Words, Max continued: “I find existing inside my mind to be a sometimes beautiful, sometimes intense, sometimes abrasive, messy, baffling, relentless experience, and I’ve tried to put as much of that feeling and form as I could into the album.” The deftly mixed audio is accompanied by a visual story which unfolds through 13 short films by a range of visual artists commissioned and directed by Max Cooper, and mixed in Dolby Atmos surround sound. Unspoken Words will be released on Mesh on 25th March on Blu-Ray + CD, vinyl and digital.

While still keeping true to his Detroit Hi-Tech Machine Funk roots with Electro anthems like 'The Making Of Ultraman' and 'Beta Capsule'. Remastered and re-issued for the first time since its original release. Essential!!!

Techno demon D.Dan kicks off 2020 with big dystopian energy. Raw grooves, slippery psychedelia, and slammin’ low end. Following a series of adored releases from D.Dan, ‘Mutant Future’ EP is a dynamic release that pulls you in hard then spins you out. Warped machine paranoia, ‘Switchblade (Descendant Mix)’ is an unforgiving opener, while Frantic ‘Mutant Future’ is a steely trip through D.Dan’s dystopian time tunnel - an absolute weapon! ‘Burnout’ is a high octane, electro punisher for the true techno lovers. On the flip, ‘Escape The Echo Chamber’ is a fun affair - distorted keys to spiral out to - big tip for the wee hours! ‘Take It Easy’ nods to UK sounds and kickin 4/4 beat. Closing track, ‘Sun Over I-5 South’ is stripped back dynamic, techy groover, perfect for the twilight zone spinners with a CPH sound.

Nite Fleit steers a course through electro, breaks, techno and acid to deliver a debut LP made up of two distinct halves, exploring contrasting emotional states and new sonic territories.

Shifting between styles, emotions and eras with ease and hiding surprises around every corner, Nite Fleit owes her rapid rise as a DJ and producer to an ability to keep dancers perpetually on their toes. Coming up through Sydney’s underground club scene, the Australia-born, London-based artist started producing as recently as 2016, making her production debut for Steel City Dance Discs in 2018. Since then she has appeared on labels across the globe including Return to Disorder, Planet Euphorique, Unknown To The Unknown, International Chrome, Acid Avengers and her own imprint, Atomic Alert.

‘Day Fleit / Nite Fleit’ is an LP with no front or back cover - depending on the listener’s intended destination the album’s two discs can be listened to in either order. ‘Overload’ wastes little time in setting the tone for ‘Day Fleit’. Densely layered, soaring arpeggiated acid lines twist and dance around Nite Fleit’s spoken lyrics, inspired by Delia Derbyshire and Barry Bermange’s iconic 1964 ‘The Dreams’ sound collage. On ‘Like I Used To Be’ warm, dreamy chords are decorated with sparkling synth melodies and vocals from Nite Fleit’s friend and fellow producer Mesmé. From the triumphant EBM textures of ‘The Flower Dance’, which features a theatric monologue by Partiboi69 reciting an Alan Watts speech, to the video-game pop melodies of ‘Dark End of the Street’ and ‘Morning Song’, on ‘Day Fleit’ Nite Fleit infuses her sound with a new buoyance and musicality.

On the flip, those rich colourful harmonies make way for the imposing, mechanical rave energy on punishing percussive techno and electro cuts like ‘Double Digits’ and ‘Nah’. Nite Fleit’s graceful acid lines turn feverish and frenzied on ‘Airs & Graces’ and ‘Paranoid Energy’ - a pair of break-heavy, mutant club tracks fine-tuned for dark and manic basement raves. ‘Bold Poke’ provides a moment of brooding, melodic respite, before ‘Serious Effect’ a cinematic closing electro workout. Across these 12-tracks, taken from a vast pool of demos sketched out over the last two years, Nite Fleit provides a sonic snapshot of swinging emotions and dancefloor yearnings, delivered with uncompromising energy, melody and contrast.

Esteemed proponent of outré dancefloor manoeuvres, Superconscious Records co-founder Fantastic Man makes his Kalahari debut proper.
Having shown up for rework duties on a couple of occasions, we find the mutable oddball at his most trippy and esoteric. In fact, OYSTER42 is the handiwork of a producer who has his formula of balmy, lysergic dance music down to an exact science.

‘Alltogethernow’ gets on a swaggering cosmic tip, all sub-loaded and celestial as levitational arpeggios and funked-up groove dovetail to mesmeric effect. ‘Alpha’, on the other hand, takes a vision quest through enchanted jungle terrain. Initiating with a hypnotic ritual chant, it’s tunnelling and murkily psychedelic; occulted dancefloor rapture tailor-made for the wormhole interior.
As if it were some artefact from a distant ‘90s utopia, Bioxy’ recalls a time when warehouse parties littered the Melbourne landscape. Where its predecessor evokes ceremony and ritual, this is an anachronistic, dilated flashback to simpler times. FM kicks it languid and life-affirming on the closing number. Radiant synth lines flutter with a gentle headiness as ‘Trojan Force’ takes us full circle with a reprise of the rainforest FX.

Hi-lo, the techno alter-ego of Oliver Heldens debuts on Drumcode with a full-force two-tracker ‘Hypnos’. Unbeknown to many, the Dutch future house star has been cultivating a love of techno separate from his mainstage persona. As Hi-lo, he’s remixed Nina Kraviz’s ‘Skyscrapers’ and released on Octopus and Filth on Acid, the latter consisting of collaborations with Reinier Zonneveld, T78 and Will Clarke. Over the last 12 months, Hi-lo has become the sixth highest selling Techno artist on Beatport, as well as cemented his place as a top streaming act in the genre. In recent times Heldens has become a regular supporter of Drumcode’s catalogue via his Heldeep Radio show and DJ sets. Likewise, he’s been on the radar of Adam Beyer since 2019 when the Drumcode boss played his monster cut ‘Poseidon’, which encouraged the young artist to begin sending him demos. His Drumcode debut ‘Hypnos’ is effective and infectious in equal doses. The title track is led by a catchy bass groove that espouses plenty of personality and is a handy tool for building energy throughout the night. ‘Hera’ is a straight-edged euphoric gem, driven by an uplifting key riff throughout.

From ‘Soopertrack’ to ‘Dark Side of the Room’, every raver worth their salt has had an Extrawelt dancefloor moment, their soaring chords touching hearts and hips in equal doses. Taking their intuitive approach to musical production to its next evolutionary phase, the ‘Automatik Akrobatik EP’ sees them in free-flow form, gifting us with a triumvirate of superb studio jams that encapsulate everything that’s special about their music. ‘Alpha & Oma’ is uplifting and throbbing, the kind of visceral techno gem that would make even the most hardened punter a little weapy. ‘Email auf Klinke’ is punchy and minimal, a solid roller to contrast its predecessor. The title track has the sonic arc of an epic film score, building from a languid pace to a widescreen glistening wall of sound, inspiring and bad ass in equal doses. “These tracks are basically “one take” jams with very few edits afterwards. The computer was mostly acting as a tape recorder while the arrange took place on the desk and machines. We feel that those tracks that happen in a nice flow and without overthinking them too much often appear to deliver their energy in a more raw and direct way but simultaneously also become rather homogenous instead of taking unnecessary deflections.” - Extrawelt

Andy Stott - We Stay Together Clear Vinyl Edition
Andy Stott
We Stay Together Clear Vinyl Edition
2LP | 2011 | UK | Reissue (Modern Love)
32,99 €*
Release:2011 / UK – Reissue
Genre:Electronic / Dance
Andy Stott’s ultra-classic bout of screwed, knackered House is a shapeshifting, hardy perennial whose crushing traction and atmospheric grip has only deepened in the decade (+1) since it was first issued, as part of a now notorious one-two in 2011 beside ‘Passed Me By’. Out of print for almost a decade, it’s now finally available again in a new edition that’s still sounding unlike pretty much anything else we’ve heard in the intervening years. ’We Stay Together’ was a proper watershed moment for Andy Stott in the nascent phase of an inspirational stylistic arc. While he’d spent the previous six years constructing everything from warehouse-shuddering deep house and dub techno to bare-boned dubstep, the arrival of a new decade paid witness to Stott turning inward, collapsing what he’d learnt from late night sessions with the Modern Love crew into a radical new sound that was arguably without precedent in its field. The simple move of screwing the tempo to circa 100bpm would, in turn, open out his sound, prising room between the rhythms which he coloured with a palette of particularly bruised, processed outside-the-box textures gleaned from an array of guitar pedals and endlessly churned samples. There were, of course, parallels in DJ Screw’s codeine-infused treatments of classic rap and soul, and their influence on the contemporaneous “witch house” style, but few, if any, were doing it within a techno and club music context that hewed so close to the darker, gristlier underbelly and animus of Manchester’s warehouse heritage. This style of viscous, cranky chug proved fertile ground that would be explored in-depth over the next decade - you can hear traces of it on everything from Overmono’s sludge to Low’s acclaimed ‘Double Negative’ - and trust when we say it’s the source of it all. But, still, nothing twats quite as smart or heavy as ‘We Stay Together’. From an opening that uncannily echoes the rinsed-out empty warehouse scenes in the closing stages of ‘Fioriucci Made Me Hardcore’, the serotonin-depleted ’Submission’ triggers a side-chained momentum that helplessly drags users thru the gnarly mire of ‘Posers’ to the zombied lurch of ‘Bad Wires’ and its title tune’s ket-legged strut. He pushes the aesthetics to asphyxiating degrees on ‘Cherry Eye’, but not without a glimmer of hope in its underwater choral motifs that always buoys his best bits from utter doom, before ‘Cracked’ stresses the metallic tang of his textures with a bloodlust and vital, systolic throb whose effect has only been galvanised with age.

Rove Ranger delivers the second release on the new Vision Ekstase label featuring four fast-paced techno cuts entitled 'vision II - Convolution'. A regular at the Vision Ekstase parties at Stuttgart's Lehmann Club, Rove Ranger now joins the imprint following his debut on Android Muziq released earlier this year. 'vision II - Convolution' succeeds David Lohlein's enthralling opener on the imprint that continues to pick up traction amongst some of techno's most revered names including the likes of Ben Sims, Efdemin, Randomer, Luke Slater, Amelie Lens and many more. The simple yet effective opener, 'Secrets We Kept' features a catchy melody combined with a heavy kick drum and scattered Hi-hats before 'Dish You' turns tables with heavy percussions and ghetto vocals, perfectly suited for peak-time purposes. While the A-Side is influenced by present techno styles, the B-Side taps into the nostalgic realms of the genre. The highly energetic 'Endless' introduces relentless highs, driving oscillations and catchy yet groovy rave synths until 'Unstable Current' closes the EP with catchy string pads in combination with a sparkling acid line and revolving modulations.

But Soundworks is also the soundtrack for those areas that turn party-goers into altered silhouettes, captured between strobe light flashes. All-in-all, what we have here is a return to form for Skudge, with a capital S.

Peggy Gou’s Gudu Records steps into 2022 with Brain De Palma’s second EP for the label, Purple Brain.

Although this is only his second release under the Brain De Palma name, Alexei Versino has been honing his sound for the best part of a decade, both solo (as Panama Keys) and as one half of the duo Stump Valley, previously releasing on labels like Dekmantel, Soul Clap and Off Minor. Born in Ukraine but settling as a child in Turin, he’s currently based in Berlin and makes up a key part of the Gudu stable.

Coming straight out the gate with an instantly impactful bassline, opening track ‘IQarus’ sets the tone for the rest of Purple Brain: bold melodies and basslines shot in high-definition, full of detail and idiosyncrasies. As with his last EP for Gudu, cinema is a key reference for Brain de Palma: ‘IQarus’ is a reference to his directorial namesake’s first film, while later in the EP, ‘(O.W.D.) Once Were Dancers’ nods to the 1994 drama Once Were Warriors, “dedicated to all the ravers, DJs, aficionados who had to go through the lockdowns … a shout out to people who keep on fighting for the underground culture!”

Elsewhere on the EP, ‘Purple Brain’ pairs an unforgettable arpeggio with stargazing stabs and a marching cowbell beat, while the Netherlands’ Deniro takes ‘IQarus’ into the depths of the night with a cosmic remix that grabs hold of a groove and refuses to let go.

”Vollsma is a metaphor for the world I end up in when I lucid dream.” - Velv.93

To understand electronic musics’ convention and its rules, is an aspiration many producers pursue. Persistence is a coherent theme in regards to making music. Attaining a musical identity is no easy feat, as it is fatiguing enough to create musical efforts. To create something of worth.
Effort usually comes with the aim of rushing through it with the least possible resistance. In order to explore the depths in his sound, Velv.93 goes in another direction: lucid dreaming.

Velv.93 dedicated a phase of solitude to transcend into the sound of the album, which can be seen as a journal of Velv.93’s reflections. Defining a singular sound through an altered state is the foundation for what is ’Vollsma’.

This is a portrait of a period that was characterized by reflections of his inner self and isolation, something that can also be traced to the titles in the album. The experimental rhythms accord lightweight notes. Sceneries of synthesized sound and organic character. Sounds as small notations and detail, pull the listening experience further. Sometimes with a soothing immersive effect made for the calm mind.

Let the album guide you through a personal journey. ’Vollsma’ is a place where psychological experimentations and resulting thrilling dimensions are clear foundations.

We wanted Turbo’s 218th release to be special, so we’re proud to announce that we’ve harpooned and skinned one of our white whales, Gesloten Cirkel. Label boss Tiga pursued several leads, most of which went nowhere (the artist's real name is not, as it turns out, "Jesse Circle”), before cornering the elusive Russian in Berlin, where he promptly befriended the shit out of him. With killer releases on legendary Dutch electro/acid imprint Murdercapital, Gesloten Cirkel’s banger credentials are unimpeachable. For his Turbo debut, he flooded our modest Metaverse offices with over 60 demos. If you guessed that the tracks on Detoon represent all the very best of that material, you just might have what it takes to run a label of your own one day. But you’d also be wrong, because there’s a second Turbo EP on the horizon. Never forget: with Turbo, you’re always here to learn.

Blazing newcomer Henri Bergmann makes her full EP debut on Watergate Records with the captivating ‘Mind Control’ EP. Building a buzz via impressive releases on her label Automatik, the Londoner has picked up support from everyone from Dixon, Solomun and Maceo Plex. Indeed, mention the Dodi Palese Remix remix of her track ‘Protection’ to any clued-up melodic house fan and you’re likely to be met with a blissed-out response, so beloved was the cut, which also ended up in Tale of Clubs’ top 10 for 2021. Her maiden voyage on the Oberbaumbrücke home label is a tour de force of chugging house that encompasses new wave, electro and progressive elements, with a strong cast of collaborators and remixes along the way. Pushing herself creatively during the lockdown, this EP is the first time we’ve heard Henri utilise her voice on her own productions, and the resulting work is a treat. The title track is a team-up with Biesmans who brings his distinct retro sound signature to the track, while Henri’s vox elevates it to another level. ‘Our Time Has Come’ is a punchy dancefloor gem propelled by her own vocals and a classy psychedelic synth line. ‘We Just Keep On Going’ brings bags of robotic soul to the table, as Henri’s husband Wennink takes to the vocoder, alongside a mystical lead melody. Stephan Jolk returns to the label following his excellent ‘Freedom’ EP in April, re-working ‘Mind Control’ into a muscular weapon. Meanwhile Echonomist, who is notable for his appearance on WhoMadeWho’s Watergate 26 compilation, also takes his hand to the title track, re-fashioning it into a tough bass-driven electro cut that’s beautiful and brain-scrambling in equal doses.

After recent resurrection from the early 90s on labels Mirror Zone, Animals on Psychedelics and Klasse Wrecks, Memphis returns with the Essences EP brought to you from timezones past and present. Staring at the eye peering from the centre of Side A you’ll find yourself aboard an Obsidian Submarine roaming through an alien world’s vast oceans battered by clanking synths, drenched by foaming acid and awash in tense pads. Coming ashore the buzzing tribal rhythms and floating ambience of Essences provide an immersive hyper-real landscape to consider the fundamentals of where we’ve been and what we’ve seen. Moving over to Side B, where the eye seems to have melted into a distant nebula, On Stranger Tides conjures a liana-covered lost temple built from ancient rock kickdrums and bone-dry hihats permeated with stuttering chants and a plaintive call into the night. Finally we head back to 1994 to rediscover an old prog house gem dug up from the Beneath a Different Sun EP, omitted due to time constraints from the Mirror Zone 2018 re-release, and now given a chance to breathe again. Thanks to Jeremy Hegge for his beautiful field recordings and Snoozy of Rat Face Records for all his sonic guidance.

Renowned German artist Jonathan Kaspar will make an eagerly-awaited return to Kompakt next month via his Umfang EP, with the four-track offering acting as his first full-length solo release on the label since March 2021. “My third Kompakt EP feels particularly special as it is the first time I’m releasing on my home label with dancefloors being open again. The result is four different tracks producing four different vibes, each of which transport my pandemic desires into today’s world.” - Jonathan Kaspar.

The title track leads the way, taking the form of a retro-leaning cut that features whirring synth stabs throughout. Kupfer comes next, a track packed full of emotive chords and a delicate underlying bassline, before Am Raster leads us to the dancefloor and beyond courtesy of minimal-laced kick patterns. Gemach, Gemach Herr Rabe ends proceedings on an incandescent note, as symphonic keys combine with intermittent crow samples to form a slice of wholesome, nature-inspired musical bliss.

Hailing from Bonn, Germany, Jonathan Kaspar is an integral part of the scene in Cologne. He is a resident at the city’s renowned Gewölbe club and also one of the current main figures at the legendary Kompakt label. His discography boasts releases on some of contemporary dance music’s most esteemed labels, including Innervisions, Cocoon Recordings and Crosstown Rebels to name a few, whilst performances at Watergate (Berlin), Ndsm (Amsterdam) and Extrema Festival (Hasselt) have brought his sound to global audiences. The Umfang EP proves exactly why he has become one of Germany’s most exciting prospects in recent times and with a highlight year ahead, the future certainly shines bright for Jonathan.

For more than twelve years, Morphology have been re-writing the rules of electronics. Michael Diekmann and Matti Turunen have melted electro, IDM and techno into their own unique sound. To celebrate their achievements, FireScope has sifted through the impressive discography of this Finnish pairing to bring long out of print tracks back to life. Twelve 2 brings together a decade’s worth of music released between 2009 and 2019, a dozen works that traverse genres and labels like Abstract Forms, AC Records, Analogical Force, Central Processing Unit, Cultivated Electronics, diametric., Inner Space Records and Vortex Traks. Spliced beats and bulging bass lines introduce the album with "Karma Flies.” Rhythmic patterns are condensed and stretched in “Inversion Layer” and “Amphidiscosa”, the latter’s aquatic undercurrents melting an organic touch with the coldness of the machine. Darker tones lurk, the long shadows cast by “Convince the Computer” spread to other tracks like “Nucleosynthesis.” Yet, despite these more sombre shades, pieces with a human element punctuate the album. The frenetic pace of “Fluid Dynamics,” with its playful melody, throbs with the pulse of a city while the ebbs and flows of the watery “Active Optics” explore an ever morphing and shifting sound. An imagined future is never far away in Morphology’s machinations. These other places are given sound in the frigid grooves of “Sentinel,” the primal beauty of “New Horizons” and the stark structures of “Landforms.” Not only does this double LP gather rare tracks never heard together before, but also each piece has been lovingly remastered to breath new life into these wonderful works. Twelve 1 celebrates the music of Morphology in all its glory, two masters of modern electronic music who continue to re-define and re-design genres.

Two years on from his critically acclaimed album ‘Straight Lines & Sharp Corners’, Wehbba returns for a brilliant three-tracker ‘Dynamo’. The Barcelona-based, Brazilian-born artist is as creative as they come, mining studio inspiration from across the gamut – whether it be everyday life, his meditation practise, or the dancefloor. Everything is fair game for Wehbba. Everything but formula, of course. ‘Dynamo’ continues this legacy. The title track delivers with bags of galloping energy, as organic tones and a wicked acid mid-section make it pop, while vocal samples from Marlon Brando sit in the background. ‘Ataraxia’ is dramatic and celestial in equal doses, intended to represent the “stoic term for enlightenment or equanimity, which is my main focus since becoming a Vipassana practitioner a few years ago,” Wehbba explains. The track represents the journey from darkness to light over the last two years and is the artist’s own personal “we’re back” anthem. ‘Strange Dreamz’ was inspired by a famous meme, Wehbba using the vocal samples to deft effect, creating a fun and funky techno weapon made for big moments. The EP follows his standout contribution to the E-Dancer Re:Generate compilation with ‘Velocity Funk’. The artist has also been making waves with his hardware-only ‘Wehbba’s Live Station’ show, which explores the spontaneous effects of recreating old and new compositions in a live environment. Highlights so far include Awakenings and Barcelona’s iconic Brunch in the Park event.

Red Axes make a triumphant return to Phantasy with a further trio of expertly-crafted leftfield club tracks. Having produced several of the label’s best-loved club moments such as ‘Sipoor’ and ‘Sound Test’, the Israeli duo easily surpass their charismatic reputation across ‘Some Lights’.

‘Some Lights’ stomps forward to reveal the footprints of a rave giant, yet, even Red Axes at their most anthemic unfold the unexpected. Bleary-eyed chords stretch wistfully into the far-distance, as a male voice compounds the mood; “Sunrise”. Suddenly, the Axes pull the rug and reveal the howling club wolf hidden behind the sheep’s dress code, plunging dancers into a heavy trip of vintage rave chords and EBM-drum play.

The more psychedelically inclined will meanwhile find plenty to embrace in the wide, kaleidoscopic canyons of ‘Skulls’, a deeper-still groove machine that conjures up images of untamed sonic plains, Morricone-esque chords unexpectedly synthesised with psychobilin. Finally, ‘Professor Grasstov’ finds the duo loosening up into more playful form still, dragging the good name of this notable academic on a loose, breaks'y trip full of baggy energy (and complete with audible liquid experiments).

Late last year, Canadian producer Priori returned with his second album ‘Your Own Power’ to great acclaim. Released via his Naff imprint, the album showcased a more contemplative style to his productions and featured one collaborative track with label partner Ex-Terrestrial. The story continues as Priori enlists a heavyweight line-up of artists to rework some of the album’s standout tracks.

Slated to drop on the 18th March, ‘Your Own Power Remixes’ features new editions from Donato Dozzy, Aurora Halal, DJ Python, and Bambounou alongside a Priori VIP - each bringing their own flair and style to the record.

Priori is an alias of Francis Latreille who first put out solo releases on Greek label Echovolt and Canadian imprint ASL Singles Club. Known to be an avid collaborator, Latreille is involved in a number of projects including Jump Source, M.S.L., Housemates, New World Science, ANF and more. Forest Drive West makes a welcome return to Echocord this February with the ‘Recursion’ EP, featuring one solo cut and two collaborations with DB1 and Localhost. London’s Forest Drive West has been steadily releasing his left of centre take on techno over the past five years on the likes of Livity Sound, Hidden Hawaii, Delsin, Ad93 fka Whities and of course Echocord where here returns here following the ‘Parallel Space’ EP back in 2019.

Leading the release is the murky, tense atmospherics of ‘100m’, produced alongside regular collaborator DB1 the eight minute composition journeys through unfurling, expansive pads, subtly nuanced bass warbles and gritty off-kilter percussion.

Next up, Forest Drive West joins forces with Localhost for title-cut ‘Recursion’, embracing a 4/4 approach rhythmically this time and bringing hazy, ethereal pads, earth shattering subs and circling stab sequences into the limelight. Forest Drive West’s solo cut ‘Anchor’ then rounds out the release, taking things deeper into dub territory via tumbling percussive echoes, billowing chords and heavy doses of low-end drive.

Catharsis is Sven Väth's first solo album in almost 20 years, and the 50th album to be released on his incomparable label, Cocoon Recordings. Produced alongside Gregor Tresher, it arrives on 25 February 2022 and is a musical autobiography that charts Svens most extraordinary life in techno.

Without the West German-born Väth, techno would look, sound and feel very different. Since falling in love with electronic music and DJing in 1981, his dedication to the art has never faltered. He plays every party as if it were his last. His broad smile has connected with millions of people around the world. His colourful and curious character has imbued techno with a personality it was often lacking. His selections remain hugely unpredictable, despite the fact that he has been playing around the world for more than 40 years. To remain not only relevant but innovative after so long is a testament to Sven's ability to connect through music on a deeper level.

Technically, of course, he is a DJ who can play for thirty hours and not miss a beat. His track selections seem almost divine, and his aura is certainly otherworldly. But more than that, he is a ringleader who is able to mix the artful side of techno with the playful side of partying. Most famously he has done this for more than 20 years at his iconic Cocoon parties in Ibiza. They single-handedly introduced techno to the White Isle and have been its beating heart ever since. Under his charge, strict style guidelines and exaggerated pigeonholing no longer apply. Instead, he has perfected the art of playing far and wide while always remaining true to his own musical identity.

In the studio, Sven has always been just as unique. He has worked under several aliases but always brought a fresh perspective. Whether securing chart hits as part of OFF in the eighties, serving up brutalist techno and trance-tinged sounds in the nineties or crafting major label albums in the 2000s, his music has remained utterly forward-looking. That legacy continues with Catharsis as Sven teams up with highly respected producer Gregor Tresher for his latest long-form offering. Tresher has long been part of the Cocoon family and is a revered artist in his own right, when the two got together in the studio it was clear they had an instant connection and there would only be one person fit to co-author this LP.

It is a record inspired by Sven's interest in the physical and spiritual processes that take place when we dance. "They are realms into which we immerse ourselves to experience our own mysticism and ecstasy," he muses. "Dancing is a conversation between body and soul and it spiritually connects us with each other." Because of the pandemic, that is of course a feeling that we all missed out on for so long. "No dancing, no paradise!" says Sven. "My imagination for this record was fueled by the many cultural experiences and encounters I have had in my life. They gave me the strength to find a way, the way to myself." And that way to himself is through music, through purifying dancing rituals and the exchange of spiritual energies that are generated in the club.

The thirteen-track album explores all facets of Sven's sound. It opens with the stomping drums but sleek synths of 'What I Used To Play' and unfolds through deep and dirty rhythms like 'The Worm', subtly euphoric highs on 'The Inner Voice' and the bubbly tribalism of the title track. There is the impassioned call-to-arms that is 'Feiern', peak-time melodic workout 'Mystic Voices' and soothing electronic lullabies like 'Being In Love'. The second half of the album takes in many more twists and turns such as the exotic strings and driving drums of 'Butoh', the paranoid techno minimalism of 'nyx' and expansive synthscapes of ambient gem 'The Cranes Of Gangtey Valley' before things play out though rugged beats and emotive chords on 'We Are', which is named after the idea that we are what we think. "With our thoughts, we make the world.? says Sven.

Then comes the moody reflection of 'Silvi's Dream', which was written in French for Sven's girlfriend. Last but not least we have the immersive dream that is 'Panta Rhei', which completes a trio of electronica tunes on the album. Ambient music has been an integral part on almost every album Sven has written because it can bring a certain emotional deepness, a quality that Sven always has been looking for.

'Catharsis' is an adventurous album that captures the good times, the sad times and, most importantly, the times of hope.

Ilario Alicante returns with a 3 tracker 'Rave Soul'. For the past few years Ilario Alicante has enjoyed something of an unintentional Ibiza kinship with Adam Beyer. When the Swede played his special annual sets on the Amnesia Terrace for Cocoon, for three years out of four, the Italian has been right there playing alongside him, ensuring his talents were on the radar of the Drumcode chief. Ilario made his first appearance on the label in 2016 with the stirring 'Temporary' featuring on A-Sides Vol.4, following with the 'Awakened' EP and 'Figures & Echoes'. Now 'Rave Soul' deepens his contribution to the label with pulsating beats and effective melodic interlude to fantastic effect.

Dominik Eulberg, of Traumschallplatten, Cocoon and Kompakt notoriety, presents the next installment of the Hertzblut Recordings EP series in the form of ‘Backslash’. The two track release instantly conveys Eulberg’s unique living organism aesthetic, a more than welcome offering for fans who have felt his amount of original output slow down over recent years. ‘Backslash’ opens with ‘Opel Tantra’, a delectable example of a living, breathing techno orchestra in full effect. Here, a classic kick drum meets rejoicing, iridescent strings that sing and swell in the fore until a funky bass riff takes the entire score straight into dance floor territory. B-side ‘Noch Ein Bass im Ärmel’ sees plucked strings and key stabs pick out an alluring groove, as distant chimes twinkle evoking the enchanted forest ever-present in Eulberg’s thoughts. Just as you’re on the cusp of entering a dream like state, Eulberg reminds us all of his four-to-the-floor techno credentials, dropping a dark and rumbling bass line and driving percussions into the mix.

For the upcoming release on KNTXT, label boss Charlotte de Witte announces a dual EP release. “The Selected EP and Pressure EP, to me, are the perfect reflection of the music I have been playing over the years.” says Charlotte de Witte. “On the Selected EP people will find the straightforward Techno sound with the Acid twist, that I love to bring to the floor when I’m touring.” “It’s counterpart, the Pressure Ep, is an extension of the mixes that I assemble for my BBC Residency. A more ambient approach, that’s rougher around the edges.” “Both releases can be seen as an ode to the techno I love and cherish.” concludes de Witte. On the subject of the dual release Charlotte says “For me this duality is essential to explore my interests both as a producer and DJ. Therefore it also made sense to me to release them simultaneously, as we also combine our label releases with events and our weekly radio show.”

Do you know what time it is? It’s debut o’clock. Emitting his first material for Pampa, it’s &ME - craftsman of all things deep and sturdy, at the same time connoisseur of emotive touch and virtuoso of sure instincts, one of the scene’s central characters for a good amount of years now and one of the main figures of Berlin’s Keinemusik-crew. The man has been hitting the bulls eye of public perception several times in the past, meeting everything it takes to get a crowd going with an intent on the detail when it comes to his arrangements and sound. These new two cuts seem nothing less than the essence of his abilities. There is “In Your Eyes", the name lending A side to this EP, showcasing a rather pensive mood. It’s just a few bars for the compound of kickdrum, tuned hi-hat tambourine and shimmering background noise until the first chords of an improvised piano-piece are tenderly laid upon the beat. Add a synth-motive coming back and forth and you’ll have the main ingredients to this - in every sense of the word - floor-moving tune.
