Led by Ester Mae Smith’ s unmistakeable voice, the Como Mama’ s have found their place at the gospel end of the Daptone table alongside a legend ar y stable of soulful musicians. However , as stirring as their music is, up to now , all of their recordings have been a capella. With this record they join for ces with the boys of the Menahan Street Band (billed pseudonymously here as The Radi ant Rhythm Band) to lay bare the funkier side of gospel music. “The rhyth ms we all play were already right there in their vocals,” explains dr ummer Homer Steinweiss, “so it felt natural to lay down the grooves behind them.” Thomas “T-N-T” Brenneck, the up-and-coming producer who brought us both Menahan Street Band and Charles Bradley, presided over the collaboration, which took place in the old Dunham Studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.

In 2005, Michael Reilly embarked on a journey down south with the intention to film a documentar y about local musicians. Through a series of unexpected yet fortunate events Reilly was led to Como Mississippi, and ultimately to the table of Angela Taylor – where she, her sister Della Daniels, and long time friend Ester Mae Smith performed an a cappella rendition of “Peace of Mind”. It was this moment that inspired Michael to return to Como with proper recording equipment, and much like what Alan Lomax had done decades before, document some of the most honest, soulful music to ever be tracked to tape. The first volume of recordings, 2008’s ComoNow featured the Como Mamas, as well as several other local groups delivering heart stopping a cappella renditions of songs they cherished. And though the Como Mama’s remained skeptical that anyone would want to hear them singing an entire record of acappella gospel, we at Daptone Records are proud to present Get an Understanding, 13 songs of unadulterated gospel greatness.

With their first two Daptone albums – Get an Understanding, and as featured singers on Como Now – The Como Mamas established themselves as three of the strongest voices in gospel music today. In December of 2015, they cemented that reputation by taking their first trip from their home in Como, MS up to Harlem, NY to crush the Apollo Theater as part of the Daptone Super Soul Revue. Taking full advantage of their presence in town, the Daptone crew brought Ester Mae Wilbourn, Della Daniels, and Angelia Taylor into the House of Soul the week after the show to join forces for the first time with the musicians and studio that has defined their label’s sound. Jimmy Hill, Thomas Brenneck, Homer Steinweiss, and Bosco Mann, all stalwarts of the Daptone stable, came together as “The Glorifiers Band,” to put down a churning musical foundation for these amazing singers. The results are some of the heaviest tracks that Daptone has cut to date. If you don’t like raw, soulful gospel music, you’re really gonna hate this one. Move Upstairs is a real mother!

The Como Mamas are Della Daniels, Ester Mae Wilbourne, and Angelia Taylor. A gospel trio from Como, Mississippi. Their first album, Get an Understanding, was an all a capella favorite among many gospel fans. In December of 2015, the Como Mamas flew up to New York to appear as par t of the Daptone Super Soul Revue which was playing three nights at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. Not wanting to miss the oppor tunity to record these amazing singers at the Daptone studio, we booked a recording session for a few days after the show. This time, though, they would be backed by The Glorifiers Band, consisting of top Daptone musicians Homer Steinweiss, Thomas Brenneck, Bosco Mann, and Jimmy Hill. The result is an album of raw soulful traditional gospellike you’ve never heard before. Angelia growls the lead on “Move Upstairs,” which shuffles down the line like a freight train. On the flip, Della “counts her blessings” over a grinding four minutes of gospel-funk. Amen, sisters.
